Order of Orange-Nassau.
Van Schaijik, who owns
Aikmans Bar & Eatery and
Brigittes in Merivale, was
awarded the Dutch order
of chivalry by the recently
appointed Netherlands
ambassador to New Zealand at
a King’s Day party.
The celebration at Brigittes
was organised by Van Schaijik
to celebrate the birthday of
Dutch King Willem-Alexander.
But Van Schaijik had no
idea he was getting the award
until it was announced at the
event by ambassador Ard van
der Vorst.
“When all my family, the
ambassador and Mayor Phil
Mauger turned up I thought
they were just being sociable,”
said Van Schaijik.
“I was pretty chuffed to get it,”

chlorine
CHLORINE WILL be introduced
to water supplies in the city’s
north-west on June 12.
It comes after Government
water regulator, Taumata Arowai,
declined the city council’s first
application for an exemption from
chlorination.
Chlorine will be added to the
water in Belfast, Northwood,
Casebrook, Harewood,
Bishopdale, Burnside, Ilam,
Avonhead, Redwood, Russley,
Broomfield, Upper Riccarton,
Fendalton, Styx and Northcote
to comply with the rules and
standards for community
supplies.
City council acting head of
three waters Brent Smith said:
“Any taste and odour issues
should reduce after a week or two,
and we’ll be doing what we can to
keep the chlorine dose to a minimum
during that time.
“If you are concerned about the
taste, you can keep drinking water
in a jug in the fridge. The chlorine
taste will dissipate naturally over a
few hours.”
Chlorine is being introduced to
areas which have previously been
unchlorinated.
“We know this will be
disappointing for residents who’ve
previously enjoyed unchlorinated
water.”

to the development of a hybrid model, offering expanded
outreach services and a personalised service for who have

model for its Mobile Library
service.
“Over recent years the Mobile
Library has seen a decline in
patronage,” said city council
head of libraries and information
Carolyn Robertson.
“Our staff have engaged closely
with our Mobile Library users
and we think a hybrid model is
the best way forward to ensure
all customers can continue to
have free and equitable access to
library services.
“We’re determined to do
everything we can to make
sure customers who may be
housebound, have limited
physical access or face other
barriers will continue to enjoy
a high-quality, personalised
library service.”
The hybrid model will offer
expanded outreach services and
a personalised service for those
who have difficulty travelling.
Targeted engagement
conducted with 110 current
Mobile Library customers
showed one third (32 per cent)

visited another library regularly
or sometimes; one third visited
another library when the mobile
service was off the road due to
Covid-19 restrictions and 34 per
cent did not visit other libraries
at all.
Two thirds of customers (64
per cent) indicated they would
visit a different library if the
mobile service stopped.

model would set up a range of

Family history revealed by book entry
When a hand-written
entry in a prescription
book dating back to
1901 caught the eye of
Amy Goodbehere while
holidaying in Oamaru,
she couldn’t quite
believe it
THERE, WRITTEN in black ink
over 120 years ago, was the name
of her great, great, grand-aunt,
Emily Mary Goodbehere.
“It was a complete shock,” said
Goodbehere, who works as visitor
services co-ordinator for Te
Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard
House in Ilam.
A recent visit to the historic
dispensary in the old grainstore
building in Oamaru opened up a
world of understanding about her
aunt, which has since inspired a
personal and professional journey
of discovery.
“My research into Emily’s
story really began when I was
exploring the dispensary and just
happened to look down and see
my ancestor’s name in the book,”
she said.
“I saw that on February 24,
1901, Emily was prescribed what
looks like acid nitro murdie and
pepsin, though it’s hard to be
completely sure given the cursive
writing. The prescription was
most likely for a heart condition.”

an extensive knowledge of
the Goodbehere family tree,
confirmed it was indeed Emily
Mary who passed away at the
Wellington Hospital a few
months later at the age of 51.
Emily had sailed from England
out to New Zealand and settled
in Feilding with her parents and
siblings in 1880. The family was
integral to the setting up of the
new town with Emily’s father,
Samuel, serving as mayor on
three occasions.
“Emily never married and ran
a private school in Feilding. The
only photo I have of her is with
her students in 1894, the year
after suffrage was granted. It
appears that all of the students
at her school were girls with the
exception of the two little boys
in the front row who were her
nephews,” said Goodbehere.
“Emily was very involved in
her faith, the Church of England,
performing as organist and
teaching Sunday school. She also
helped to further the interest of
the Wesleyan and Presbyterian
churches as well, and on her
father’s passing was appointed
government meteorologist for the
district.”
It was what Goodbehere
discovered next, however, that
really got her intrigued.
“I was excited to find out
that Emily served as treasurer
and secretary for the Feilding
branch of the Women’s Christian
Temperance Union from 1896;
positions that she fulfilled
with ‘much christian zeal and
energy’ according to an obituary
published after her death,” she
said.

in The White Ribbon – the
first New Zealand newspaper
written by women for women –
acknowledged that ‘the Feilding
branch could ill spare such a
spirit’.”
Leading suffragist Kate
Sheppard, who was instrumental
in ensuring the legislation that
granted New Zealand women
the vote was passed in September
1893, was a founding member
of the Women’s Christian
Temperance Union, becoming its
national superintendant
of franchise and legislation
in 1887.
It was in this role that Kate
Sheppard organised the petitions
and the campaign to secure the
vote for women in New Zealand.
Her house – now cared for by
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere
Taonga – was the nerve centre of
the campaign.
“The connection raises the
question in my mind whether
Emily and Kate Sheppard
ever corresponded. It seems
like it could be a possibility,”
Goodbehere said.
Already, one of the mysteries
around Emily appears to have
been solved.
“I always suspected my
ancestors had signed the 1893
Kate Sheppard
women’s suffrage petition,
however I wasn’t able to find any
of their names on the digitised
version,” said Goodbehere.
“I did eventually come across
the transcript of the 1892 petition
on the NZ History website and
found Emily Mary Goodbehere’s
name there, signed in Feilding.
I suspect that the Feilding area
petition sheets of the 1893 edition
were on a roll that went directly
to Parliament and have sadly
since been lost.”
Goodbehere is relishing
what she sees as a close family
connection to her current place
of work at Te Whare Waiutuutu
Kate Sheppard House.
“I couldn’t be prouder and look
forward to more suprises as I dive
deeper into my family history,”
she said.

Allspice and courgette
fritters
These fritters are a winner for
lunch or dinner. Courgettes,
carrots or grated pumpkin
work well in them. If you like a
little hit of chilli, sprinkle some
flakes.
Makes 12
Ingredients
3 courgettes, grated
½ tsp salt
2 cloves garlic
2 Tbsp grated onion
3 eggs
¾ cup self-rising flour
1 tsp ground allspice
½ tsp ground cumin
¼ cup chopped dill
Pepper, to taste
Oil, to fry
½ cup Greek yoghurt
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 Tbsp chopped dill
1 Tbsp lemon juice
Directions
Place the grated courgettes
into a clean tea towel. Massage
through the salt and let them sit

for 10 minutes. Squeeze out any
excess water.
Place the garlic, onion, eggs,
flour, allspice, cumin, dill and
courgettes in a large bowl,
stirring well to combine. Add a
little ground pepper.
Heat a little oil in a frying pan.
Add large tablespoons of the
mixture to the pan, cooking 2 or
3 at a time for 4-5 minutes.
Turn for a further 4-5 minutes
until light and bouncy to the
touch.
Continue with the remaining
mixture.
For the dip, combine the
yoghurt, garlic, dill and lemon
juice in a bowl.
Serve the fritters warm with a
dollop of dip and garnish with a
sprig of dill.

Spiced peach and
chocolate cake
Serves 8
Ingredients
120g butter
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cloves
1½ cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
100g grated chocolate
420g tin peaches, drained
Lightly whipped cream to serve
Directions
Preheat the oven to 170degC.
Line a 20×20cm tin with baking
paper.
Cream the butter and sugar
until light and fluffy. Add the
eggs one at a time, beating
through, along with the vanilla.
Fold in the cinnamon,
nutmeg, cloves, flour and
baking powder, then the grated
chocolate. Spread the batter
into the cake tin. Arrange the
drained peaches on top. Place
into the centre of the oven for
45-50 minutes until light and
spongy to touch.
Cool in the tin, then serve
with whipped cream.

With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.

output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the

Skoda SUV packs powerful punch
THERE OFTEN comes a point
in time when you know the
mode of transport isn’t fit for
purpose.
That happened to my wife and
I just recently as our old sedan
made way for a sport utility vehicle.
The latter providing us with
the entry and egress comfort we
need as our hips give way to old
age, notwithstanding modern
engines are far more fuel efficient
than our car that was designed
over 20 years ago.
Of course, being the petrolhead
I am, I would have liked to
have purchased something with
a bit more punch from under the
bonnet, but in terms of cost I had
to be realistic about that.
Had funds been available, we
may well have purchased a Skoda
Kodiaq – the RS version. It has
all of the comfort ingredients we
were looking for in an SUV, but
under the bonnet sits the 2-litre
turbocharged engine that has
found its way through a raft of
Skoda, Seat, Cupra and Volkswagen
product, notably the VW
Golf GTi.
The Kodaiq RS has 180kW and
370Nm under the bonnet and it
entices with free-revving nature
and solid turbo boost.
Skoda’s marketing slogan
is ‘simply clever,’ and over the
years I’ve mentioned many times
the little niceties that make the
brand stand out from others. In
the Kodiaq RS it was the plastic
wheel trims that sit inside the actual
alloy wheel itself, which can
be removed to give the vehicle a
completely different look. It’s the
first time I’ve seen that arrangement
and, yes, it is clever.
Those features don’t come at
a huge cost; sure, at $79,990 the
range-topping RS will stretch
some buyers’ budgets, but the entire
Kodiaq range is there to lure
buyers who want quality product
at an affordable price. The entry
level model lists at $48,990, while
those in the medium grades sit
in the $60,000 bracket.
Of course, all models have the
benefit of space, that is the way
it is with the modern SUV, and
the Kodiaq RS is no exception,
there’s even seven seats, although
the two rear seats that fold up
out of the cargo section are really
just for children or those very
slight of build.
It’s important to have balance
underneath when you have
healthy power outputs up front. In
terms of performance it will accelerate
to 100km/h from a standstill
in 6.6sec and will make a highway
overtake in 4.6sec (80-120km/h).
Drive is distributed through
a direct shift gearbox with
seven distinct ratios, by the sheer
nature of its design it is a quickchanging
gearbox that doesn’t
put any unnecessary load on the
engine. Not only is the engine a
real dynamo, it is also one of the
most pleasing in today’s market,
thrilling with its potential and
sound, the automatic downshift
blip reminiscent of a race car on
track.
All that it offers doesn’t come
at the cost of massive fuel usage,
Skoda rates the Kodiaq RS with
an 8.3-litre per 100km/h combined
cycle average.
The Kodiaq RS stands up to
be counted with its honesty and
driveability, it has that fun factor
and serious capability both onroad
and off, although undulating
off-road excursions would
be the best bet. It’s not a serious
cross-country model, but it will
take the family into the high
country lakes for that summer
fishing trip and/or the winter ski
field access road with much ease.
