Jon is our wizard of the web – he helped create our
He’ll make sure our digital content is seen by key
industry personnel across the globe.
Following the laws set out by
a country’s government is a
fundamental part of running
a business. Fall foul of the law
and you can be in big trouble,
plus it’s not great marketing for your
business.
Our market, perhaps more than any
other business sector, must constantly
keep its fingers on the pulse of the latest
changes in law. Gun industry laws are
ever changing, making it difficult to stay
on top of them all. This is particularly
true for companies that export to many
different countries – each with their
own laws that have to be accepted.
Retailers also battle with law change
on a regular basis and smaller shops,
with less staff, have a hard task on their
hands to keep up, especially when trying
to stay on top of all the other tasks
needed to run a successful business.
Let’s look at the USA as an example;
each State has its own rules and
regulations. In 2022 there were a lot of
changes across a lot of US States.
For instance, in the State of
California, five Bills were passed which
included restrictions on marketing
firearms and stricter licensing
procedures.
Colorado brought in a strange Bill,
prohibiting open carry near to polling
locations, while Deleware introduced
a package of measures to regulate
high-capacity magazines and stiffer
background checks. Over in New Jersey
several Bills were signed, which included
the regulation of handgun ammo sales
and legislation allowing the State’s
Attorney General to sue members of the
firearm industry for violations stemming
from the sale or marketing of firearms.
More Bills were signed in Washington,
Vermont, Rhode Island and Oregon,
amongst others.
This shows the scale of changes and
certainly makes it difficult for retailers
and manufacturers to keep on top but,
crucially, plan for the future in terms of
products to bring to market and to stock
on retail shelves. Organisations such
as the NSSF do a great job in helping
businesses deal with the ever-changing
landscape, so it always pays to become
a member of your local shooting trade
associations.
Have a great trading month.
FIREARM INDUSTRY
ECONOMIC IMPACT RISES
322 PER CENT SINCE 2008
The total economic impact of
the firearm and ammunition
industry in the United States
increased to $80.73 billion in
2022 from $19.1 billion in 2008, a 322
percent increase, while the total number
of full-time equivalent jobs rose to over
393,696 from approximately 166,000,
a 136 percent increase in that same
period, according to a report released by
the NSSF, The Firearm Industry Trade
Association.
On a year-over-year basis, the
industry’s economic impact rose to
$80.73 billion in 2022 from $70.52
billion in 2021. Total jobs increased
by over 17,877 in the same period, to
396,696 from 375,819. The firearm
industry has broader impacts throughout
the economy. It supports and generates
business for firms seemingly unrelated
to firearms, at a time when every job in
America counts. These are real people,
with real jobs, working in industries as
varied as banking, retail, accounting,
metalworking and printing among others.
The firearm and ammunition industry
paid over $7.48 billion in business
taxes, including property, income and
sales-based levies. An additional $1.15
billion was paid in federal excise taxes,
which directly contributes to wildlife
conservation.
“Our industry’s economic input is
undeniably contributing to every state
and every community. This milestone
achievement of over $80 billion in
economic impact proves that the
American firearm and ammunition
industry is strong,” said Joe Bartozzi,
NSSF President and CEO. “Ours is an
industry that is consistently growing
Federal Recognised as Most Frequently Purchased
Shotshell Ammunition Brand in Southwick Report
Federal Ammunition leads the category
of most frequently purchased shotgun
ammunition according to the Southwick
Associates’ 2022 “Hunting & Shooting
Participation and Equipment Purchases
Consumer Tracking Study.” Southwick’s
yearly survey compiled the feedback
of over 9,000 hunters and recreational
shooters.
“The fact that Federal shotshell
ammunition leads the category for
most shotgun ammo purchased is a
testament to the demanding work
everyone at Federal puts into creating
these products,” said Dan Compton,
Product Director for Federal Shotshell
Ammunition. “This year’s survey showed
the highest percentage of all shotshell
ammo purchased was Federal. This is
truly a team effort, and our company
couldn’t be prouder.”
Federal has expanded its shotshell
line up in the past several years, adding
a competition target line up in High
Over All, along with sub-gauge
extensions for Top Gun, Black
Cloud and a new Bismuth
offering featuring HEVI-
Bismuth. New HEVI-Bismuth
shot is 22 per cent denser than
steel, delivering more lethal
energy downrange. Launched
by the FLITECONTROL
FLEX wad, bismuth pellets
pattern consistently, and their
metallic properties make them
safe in both modern and classic
shotguns.
“We want to continue to
have Federal Ammunition be
a company that fills all of your shotgun
ammunition needs,” said Compton. “For
those that enjoy cold mornings in the
duck blind, to busting clays, and for
home defence, Federal Ammunition’s
quality and trusted performance is there
to meet those needs. With Federal’s
wide range of product choices, shotgun
hunters and shooters can easily find a
product to fit their needs.”
Ferkinghoff welcomes special guests to IWA stand
At the recent IWA
OutdoorClassics
in Nuremberg,
Germany Ferkinghoff
International
welcomed U.S.
Consul General
Timothy Liston
and Bavarian State
Secretary Roland
Weigert, MdL.
As a representative
and importer of
well-known US
brands, Ferkinghoff
International
attracted special
attention in the
political environment.
On the one hand, through
the visit of the Bavarian State
Secretary Roland Weigert,
MdL (Bavarian State Ministry
for Economic Affairs,
Regional Development and
Energy), whose responsibilities
also include foreign trade
promotion. The intention
of the economic policy of
his house is to strengthen
Bavarian companies so that
they can successfully assert
themselves in national and
international competition.
With his visit to Ferkinghoff
as an example of a longstanding
successful mediumsized
company with its
connections to international
markets, he underlined these
intentions and spoke with the
Managing Directors, Andrea
and Achim Ferkinghoff. They
discussed the challenges of the
industry and the handling of
these issues in entrepreneurial
activities. Weigert himself is
an enthusiastic hunter and
took the opportunity to inform
himself of the new Ferkinghoff
products.
With a view to the
European market and the
close cooperation with US
companies, Ferkinghoff
International, on the other
hand, has been in contact with
the US Consulate in Munich
for quite some time. Also, in
Ferkinghoff ’s anniversary year,
U.S. Consul General Timothy
Liston visited the company’s
booth and its U.S. producers.
In conversation
with management
Andrea and Achim
Ferkinghoff, he
underscored the high
level of interest in
import companies
serving markets in
close cooperation
with U.S. partners,
learned about the
associated challenges
in organizational
and formal processes,
and exchanged
views with the
representative of the
brands represented at
the booth.
In addition to his many
political commitments and
efforts to maintain good
transatlantic relations, the
Consul General has another
passion - sports. So, he
also knows the famous US
marksman Jerry Miculek, who
was available for autographs at
Ferkinghoff ’s booth and did
not miss the opportunity to
get a personal dedication.
International Lynx Conference in Slovenia
The silent comeback of the lynx
– how hunters support lynx
conservation in Europe
For 50 years, hunters in
Slovenia have supported the
recovery and conservation
of the Eurasian lynx. On 2
March 1973, hunters and
foresters brought the first
lynx back to Slovenian forests.
The reintroduction of lynx to
Slovenia is still considered one
of the most successful efforts
in the world to return lynx to
the wild, and dedicated and
passionate hunters were key
partner to make this possible.
The experience, advice and, last
but not least, the courage of the
generation that took the fate of
the lynx in Slovenia into their
own hands, were a source of
encouragement and guidance in
the design and implementation
of the LIFE Lynx project that
started in 2017.
LIFE Lynx
LIFE Lynx project’s primary
objective is rescuing the
Dinaric-SE Alpine lynx
population from extinction
and to preserve it in the long
term. Before the start of the
project, the population was
small, isolated, and extremely
inbred. It urgently needed
reinforcement by introducing
additional, healthy animals
from another population. The
project reinforces the Dinaric-
SE Alpine population with
lynx from the viable source
population in the Carpathians,
while maintaining high public
support.
The team is collaborating
across all EU countries
sharing this population to
develop and implement a
systematic approach to ensure
long-term viability of the
reinforced population. The
project is a good example of
joint efforts towards long term
lynx conservation between
hunters, Hunters Association
of Slovenia, foresters from
Slovenia Forest Service and
scientists from University of
Ljubljana. Hunters are key
partners in monitoring the lynx
populations and are standing
strong against illegal killing.
Last year for instance, the
Hunters Association of Slovenia
organized a three-day training
for prevention and successful
persecution of illegal killing of
wild animals for police officers.
The conference: international
exchange between hunters and
researchers
Learning from different
projects, sharing knowledge
and expanding the network
of relevant interest groups
were the main goals of this
conference. By listening to
experts from Austria, Croatia,
Germany, Italy, Slovenia and
Switzerland, participants could
learn from reintroduction
projects in Europe. In total,
FACE members from 10
different countries joined the
conference and contributed
with their experience.
Fruitful discussions about
monitoring, stakeholder
involvement and legal
enforcement were promoted
during and after the conference.
Plenty of business cards were
exchanged and FACE members
and researchers actively
planned future meetings to
further support stakeholder
involvement which will
benefit lynx conservation and
management in Europe.
Signing a networking
agreement of exchange of
information on lynx presence
With new translocations of
lynxes within the LIFE Lynx
project, we can assume the
spread of the lynx population
to Austria. For the long-term
conservation of this lynx
population, it is important that
a transboundary exchange of
information on lynx presence,
movement, abundance, and
good practices from the LIFE
Lynx project is regularly
communicated. Therefore, a
networking agreement was
signed by the president of the
Styrian Hunting Association,
the president of Hunters
Association of Slovenia and the
director of the Slovenia Forest
Service.
The signing of this document
represents a good example of
multi-institutional collaboration
and cross-border coordination
of joint lynx conservation
actions.
Streamlight introduces Vulcan Clutch rechargeable lantern
US-based flashlight
experts, Streamlight,
has introduced the
Vulcan Clutch®, a
rechargeable multifunction
lantern that
delivers 1,700 lumens
and features a swivel
neck and a 340-degree
rotating head. The
new light also includes
a versatile clamping
handle, enabling first
responders to attach
it virtually anywhere
to provide light in
multiple directions.
“With its highpower
LEDs, the
Vulcan Clutch provides
firefighters and first
responders with the
bright light they
require in emergencies,
plus it converts from
a handheld lantern
to a multi-function
light that clamps
virtually anywhere
to accommodate
situations where both
hands are needed,” said
Michael F. Dineen,
Streamlight’s Chief
Revenue Officer.
“This two-in-one
light with its clampon
functionality is
designed to assist
firefighters in a
variety of emergency
situations, but it
also serves as a work
light in industrial
environments and a
portable scene light for
roadside assistance. It
clamps onto guardrails,
buckets, the back of
trucks and even serves
as a roadside warning
beacon with its flash
mode functionality.”
The Vulcan Clutch
has a swivel neck
and rotating head
with hinges at the
top to provide multidirectional
lighting.
With the head stowed,
the light provides a
20-degree downcast
beam for footpath
lighting. The flash
mode easily marks
entrances and exits
or draws attention to
hazards when activated.
Its rubberised,
cushion-grip clamping
handle enables users to
attach the lantern to
virtually any surface,
including ladders,
doors, windows, motor
vehicles, and other
structures.
The new lantern uses
three white high-power
LEDs for extreme
brightness. Three
deep-dish parabolic
reflectors produce a
tight spot beam with
optimum peripheral
illumination to aid
in navigation, while
two ultra-bright blue
LEDs illuminate the
lantern’s taillights.
On high, it delivers
1,700 lumens and
67,500 candelas over
520 metres; on low it
offers 380 lumens and
15,000 candelas over
a 245-metre beam
distance. Run times
are 6.5 hours on high,
18 hours on low and
25 hours in signalling
flash mode.
Powered by a
rechargeable 7.4V
5.2Ahr lithium-ion
battery, the Vulcan
Clutch fully charges
in 5 hours. Its quick
install charge rack fits
the same footprint as
other lanterns in the
Litebox®, Vulcan® and
Vulcan® 180 series.
The lantern’s housing
is fabricated from
high-impact, super
tough nylon offering
exceptional durability,
and its rotating head
is constructed from
high-grade aluminium,
encased in super
tough nylon. The light
features an unbreakable
polycarbonate lens
with a scratch-resistant
coating and a sealed
gasket. It measures
23.85cm long, 11.68cm
wide and 16.26cm
high, and weighs
only 1288g with the
included battery.
The Vulcan Clutch
is IPX7-rated for
waterproof operation
to one metre for 30
minutes. It also is
impact-resistant tested
to two metres.
features a pressure-formed lead core that
is bonded to an extremely uniform jacket
a single atom at a time that virtually
eliminates separation on impact for
more retained weight and consistent
penetration depths. The Gold Dot
hollow-point design expands consistently
through a full range of barriers. Reliable
ignition and cycling are delivered thanks
to sealed primers and nickel-plated brass.
“The use of Gold Dot technology
in this contract ammunition ensures
the highest performance threshold and
absolute confidence in performance,”
continued Price. “We are extremely
pleased with this prestigious contract
award. It validates the high level of
trust that our national law enforcement
agencies have with our extremely reliable
and innovative ammunition.”
“We very much appreciate the agreement
and thank the Swedish and Finnish
Defence Forces for the good cooperation
with Sako Ltd. and the trust they have
placed in us. With this agreement, Sako
Ltd. will return to being a manufacturer of
semi-automatic and automatic weapons,”
says Raimo Karjalainen, CEO and Member
of the Board of Sako Ltd.
In the first phase, Finland will acquire
assault rifles and personal protective
weapons for field tests.
“The framework agreement between
the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics
Command, the Swedish Defence Materiel
Administration and Sako Ltd for the
procurement of firearms is a continuation
of decades of cooperation between the
Defence Forces and Sako Ltd. The future
range of firearms is being prepared to
gradually replace the Defence Forces’
current assault rifles, self-loading sniper
rifles and heavy sniper rifles. The Defence
Forces are preparing to phase out the
current weapon systems in stages, which
will ensure a controlled and cost-effective
phase-out of the current system,” says
Major General Jari Mikkonen, Director
of the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics
Command.
At the same occasion, Sweden made
its first serial procurement of assault rifles
and personal protective weapons through
the framework agreement. The number of
weapons being purchased by Sweden is
considerable. The first agreement will cover
firearms worth approximately SEK875
million (€78million).
“The signed agreement will have a
significant impact on the growth of Sako’s
business and on the defence and security
of supply of both countries. Sako Ltd’s
products ensure that both the Finnish and
Swedish Defence Forces will have state-ofthe-art
products to ensure the security of
their countries. The agreement will have a
major impact in the long term and will have
a significant impact on employment at Sako.
Already at this stage, the project involves
several dozen professionals who have shown
excellent commitment and dedication to the
project. In addition to new jobs, the project
will also have a significant impact on new
investments and Sako’s subcontractors. We
are very grateful to Beretta Holding, the
owner of the company, which has placed
its trust in our company and created the
conditions for Sako to participate in the
realisation of this contract,” continues
Raimo Karjalainen, CEO and Member of
the Board of Sako Ltd.
The Swedish Defence Materiel
Administration ‘s procurement at this stage
covers 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 calibre assault
rifles, 7.62x51 calibre sniper rifles and the
.338 Lapua Magnum (8.6mm).
“The agreement will affect virtually all
Swedish Defence Forces personnel, who
will in the long term have access to new
modern weapons. We are now taking a
big step towards replacing virtually all the
weapons in our armed forces and that is
very gratifying,” says Jonas Lotsne, Director
of Land Systems at the Swedish Defence
Materiel Administration FMV.
Aimpoint awarded British Armed Forces contract
Aimpoint, the leading
manufacturer and innovator
of red dot sighting technology,
has been awarded a seven-year
framework contract within the
Support Weapons Enhanced
Sighting Systems (SWESS)
programme for the British
Armed Forces, via its exclusive
UK distributor Edgar Brothers.
Aimpoint will supply both
the FCS13-RE Fire Control
System with the TH-60
thermal clip-on for SWESS-
Heavy Mature Project and the
CompM4 sight combined with
ballistic adjustable mounts and
3X Magnifiers for SWESS-
Light Battlesight Project.
The FCS13-RE is a direct
view, Dynamic Universal
Reflex Sight, which utilises an
integrated laser range finder
and ballistic computer to give
the Operator an aiming point
corrected for range, type of
munition, terrain angle, and
environmental conditions. In
addition to the 84mm Carl
Gustaf, the system can be
utilised on other crew-served
weapons including 40mm high
velocity grenade launchers, and
12.7mm (.50 calibre) heavy
machine guns. The FCS13-
RE provides a very high
probability of first-shot hit on
both stationary and moving
targets at extended ranges and
utilises a very intuitive User
control interface. The system
can be enhanced with modular
drop compensation at various
distances and combines the
benefits of a rugged red dot
sight with magnification
for engagements at longer
distances.
The selection of the Aimpoint
sighting solutions followed
extensive tests and evaluations
conducted by the UK MOD.
All optics will be supplied
through Aimpoint’s exclusive
UK distributor, Edgar Brothers,
to the British Armed Forces.
“We at Aimpoint are
extremely proud to be awarded
these contracts by the UK
MOD,” says Erik Jeppsson,
Marketing Director, Aimpoint
“The addition of these
systems to the British troops
will greatly increase their
lethality on the battlefield and
the ability to place first round
hits with any heavy support
weapon will be a game changer,”
says Magnus Andersson,
Director FCS, Aimpoint.
NORTH CAROLINA’S
LEGISLATURE HAS
OPPORTUNITY TO
RIGHT A WRONG
By Larry Keane, SVP for Government & Public Affairs, Assistant Secretary and General Counsel, NSSF.
North Carolina’s
General Assembly
is at a decision
point. It can vote
to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s
veto of a bill to repeal a Jim
Crow-era law requiring a
permit-to-purchase a pistol.
Or it can allow the governor’s
appeasement of special interest
gun control groups to keep
a law, rooted in racism, in
place. This law was designed
to deprive North Carolinians
of their Second Amendment
rights, especially African
Americans.
Gov. Cooper vetoed North
Carolina’s Senate Bill 41.
That’s legislation that would
repeal the state’s outdated
requirement for citizens to
obtain a pistol purchase permit
from their local sheriff before
they could legally purchase
a handgun from a federally
licensed firearm retailer. Given
the advances in technology and
the background check process,
a permit-to-purchase a pistol
is redundant and unnecessary.
The FBI’s National Instant
Criminal Background Check
System (NICS) provides an
almost instant and up-to-date
background check for firearm
retailers on those customers
wishing to purchase a firearm.
The NICS system is used
across the country to verify
that firearms sold at retail are
only transferred to those in
good standing with the law.
Century-old discriminatory
law
North Carolina’s permit-topurchase
law is 104 years old,
enacted in 1919. The law
requires county sheriffs to
approve permits for handgun
buyers to obtain and undergo
a background check. It also
requires sheriffs to evaluate a
“good moral character.”
That subjective requirement is
problematic
“(The law) was actually
facilitated for the denial
of handguns to African
Americans,” said state Sen.
Jim Perry, one of the bill’s
sponsors.
He explained that when the
laws were enacted in 1919,
in order to obtain a handgun
permit, a sheriff would
have to declare a person as
of “good moral character,”
according to The Daily Tar
Heel.
“That’s too much arbitrary
power for anyone to have,”
Perry said.
That subjective
requirement is also
Constitutionally specious.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s
Bruen decision struck down
New York’s concealed carry
permitting law that relied
on authorities evaluating
character. Gov. Cooper
relied on the state’s ability
to evaluate character when
he vetoed the legislation
repealing the state’s pistol
permitting requirements.
The governor’s statement
claimed that sheriffs need to
be able “refuse a permit based
on signs of mental illness,
domestic abuse incidents that
might not be captured in a
national database, or other
26 www.guntradeworld.com

nssf
indicators that a person could
be a danger to themselves or
others.”
FBI NICS
That’s a red herring. There
are systems in place for
that. Those adjudicated
as mentally defective by a
court are listed as prohibited
individuals by FBI NICS.
The same applies to
domestic abusers. Keeping
the permitting scheme in
place actually makes North
Carolina less safe because
the permits are active for five
years. That means someone
who receives a permit and
later subsequently commits a
crime that would make them
prohibited from purchasing
a firearm would still have
the permit. The FBI NICS
checks that buyer each and
every time a purchase is
attempted.
N.C. Sheriffs want change
North Carolina’s Sheriffs
Association Executive Vice
President and General
Counsel Eddie Caldwell told
media in 2021 that advances
made by the FBI NICS
caused them to support
repealing the antiquated
permit-to-purchase system.
“Now that those
records are uploaded, the
[National Instant Criminal
Background] check and the
pistol permit are duplicative,”
he said.
Senate Bill 41 would
do more to protect North
Carolina communities.
The legislation would
require state agencies to
educate the public about
the importance of the safe
storage of firearms and to
facilitate the distribution
of gun locks. That is an
initiative the firearm industry
supports. NSSF’s Project
ChildSafe® has distributed
over 40 million free firearm
safety kits, including locking
devices in partnership with
15,000 law enforcement
agencies in all 50 states and
five U.S. territories.
The state’s Department
of Public Safety would
be required to publish
information on safe firearm
storage methods and how
to obtain storage devices,
efforts supported by the
firearm industry. That
education would also include
suicide prevention education,
another initiative supported
by NSSF. The firearm
industry partnered with the
American Foundation for
Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
to provide educational
materials to firearm retailers
and ranges to have a “brave
conversation” and prevent
suicides.
North Carolina’s legislature
can show the governor what
true gun safety looks like
by overriding Gov. Cooper’s
veto of Senate Bill 41. These
are Real Solutions® This
legislation protects Second
Amendment rights and
improves the state’s efforts to
keep communities safe.
GAMO UNVEILS
FEATURE-PACKED
VIPER PRO
Spanish air rifle expert, Gamo, has brought a fresh
product to market in the shape of the Viper Pro 10X
GEN3 – a ten-shot, auto-loading break barrel with speed
and power at its heart. Gun Trade World discovers more
about this exciting new release.
GAMO
speed and
power,” is how the excited
Gamo team describe the
key selling points of the
“Unprecedented
company’s new air rifle.
“Unparalleled performance,” was another
description used when the Gun Trade World
team sat down with the Gamo staff at the recent
IWA OutdoorClassics show in Germany.
Gamo has a rich history in the manufacturing
of air rifles, it’s first came to market in 1961 and
since then the company has grown to become
the largest airgun manufacturer in Europe. Since
the company began exporting in 1963 shooters
in over 50 countries enjoy using Gamo’s range of
products.
Offering smoother operation and improved
accuracy for an unprecedented shooting
experience, the Viper Pro 10X GEN3i includes
the patent-pending 10X GEN3i Technology
with Gamo’s revolutionary new horizontal
inertial fed magazine integration, making it
lighter, more compact, and low profile. The
magazine indexes using the inertial force from
the recoil of the air rifle – creating a smoother
and more precise breech-loading process. This
air rifle features a new stock that combines
a traditional hunting stock design with the
automotive grade glass filled nylon materials.
Forearm, grip, and cheek piece are non-slip
texturised.
Key Technologies
Whisper Maxxim
The Whisper Maxxim features two noise
dampening chambers, offering a quieter
performance as well as an improved muzzle
break design. The new muzzle break helps
reduce the recoil and is also integrated with the
bull barrel. This new technology results in a
lightweight, fluted, polymer/steel rifled barrel,
integrating one of the latest sound-suppression
technologies from Gamo. The Whisper Maxxim
takes less space than the Whisper, keeping a
better weight balance while making the air rifle
quieter.
IGT MACH 1
Based off the ground-breaking IGT platform,
the IGT MACH 1 replaces the standard spring
power plant with an Inert Gas Cylinder, but the
IGT MACH 1’s monster 33-millimeter cylinder
delivers more velocity and terminal penetration.
The pneumatic cylinder rockets pellets up to
1420 Feet Per Second (fps) in .177 calibre (with
PBA Platinum Ammo), and promotes smooth
and consistent cocking efforts with constant
power delivered to any pellet you shoot. If you
want: More Precision, Less Vibration and True
Knock Down Power. Make sure your next Gamo
has the IGT MACH 1 inside.
CAT
The revolutionary C.A.T. (Custom Action
Trigger) enables Gamo air rifle owners to
independently adjust the 1st and 2nd stages of
their trigger to tailor the trigger pull and crispness
to their personal preference. Simply loosen the
1st stage adjustment screw and the trigger travel
increases. If a shorter travel length is desired just
tighten the same screw to decrease the 1st Stage
travel length. The 2nd Stage Adjustment is made
just as easily – unscrew the adjustment setting to
increase the 2nd Stage travel length or decrease it
by screwing in the same adjustment point.
RRR
Gamo, pioneering the latest air gun technology,
delivers the ground-breaking Triple R (Recoil
Reducing Rail). The RRR was developed to
subdue the taxing stresses placed on your scope
from the intense recoil of air guns and highpowered
rifles. The Recoil Reducing Rail uses
patent pending two-piece aluminium construction
separated by dual polymer struts to absorb the
shockwaves generated by the recoil. Once the
scope is mounted to the Recoil Reducing Rail,
the recoil stresses to its internal components are
reduced by almost 100 per cent. Hunters demand:
OUTDOORCLASSICS
2023
Ceska zbrojovka (CZ) showed off its latest develops at the recent IWA OutdoorClassics
exhibition – a cross-section of firearms from its current portfolio were presented, which
included several new and exciting products.
CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1
30 WWW.GUNTRADEWORLD.COM

CZ
The main product on display, which dominated the
graphics at the CZ stand, was the new CZ TS 2 Orange
sport special. Chambered in 9 × 19 and 40 S&W, the CZ
TS 2 is primarily designed for competing in the IPSC
Standard division. The fundamental difference between
this new model and other existing models in the CZ TS 2 series, as
well as all other pistols from CZ, is its heavy polished bull barrel.
This new barrel contributes to higher accuracy, smoother handling
when shooting, maximum accuracy when firing fast, repetitive
shots and an increased service life. The CZ TS 2 Orange had an
extremely impressive debut at the 2022 IPSC Handgun World
Shoot, where Kahlil Adrian Viray, a Filipino member of the CZ
Shooting Team, used this model to win three gold medals in the
Standard division – Overall category, Junior category and as a
member of the Filipino men’s team.
Fresh rimfire release
A welcomed addition to the long gun segment in 2023 is the
CZ 457 Varmint Synthetic rimfire rifle, whose creation was a result
of customer demand. It combines the main advantages of two
existing models in this successful series – the CZ 457 Varmint and
the CZ 457 Synthetic – resulting in a very accurate 22 LR or 17
HMR calibre firearm with increased resistance to adverse weather
conditions. It’s a great choice for sport shooting and hunting at
medium to longer distances.
New Scorpion announcement
In 2023, the 22 LR calibre CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 and CZ
Scorpion Evo 3 S1 Carbine models will be added to the CZ
portfolio. These two new additions to the internationally popular
family of semi-automatic firearms in the pistol calibre category
retain all of the main benefits found in the CZ Scorpion Evo
3 series, plus the added advantages of minimal recoil, partially
reduced weight and virtually zero bore wear. With these firearms in
hand, experienced shooters can fully concentrate on achieving the
most accurate shots possible, while beginners can more easily and
quickly learn how to properly handle them.
In addition to the cross-section of CZ firearms presented at
IWA OutdoorClassics 2023, a selection of revolvers and pistols
from CZ’s new sister brand Colt were also on display.
Meeting the team
Apart from the firearms themselves, visitors who came to the CZ
stand could also meet and speak with CZ Product Managers and
CZ Presenters. And as an added bonus, visitors were treated to
three special guests who were also at the stand – three current
world champions from the recent 2022 IPSC Handgun World
Shoot in Thailand and members of the CZ Shooting Team: Eric
Grauffel (9-time World Champion), Ljubisa Momcilovic and
Kahlil Adrian Viray (3-time World Champion). These phenomenal
shooters were happy to speak with visitors, answer their questions
and give autographs to their fans.
The CZ stand also featured an interactive area where visitors
could use their imagination to “build” a firearm in accordance
with their wants and needs using the CZ Configurator. In fact,
customers can configure their own dream firearm in the exact same
way in a total of seven countries: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria,
France, Germany, Poland and the USA. Since 1st March, the CZ
Configurator now offers the CZ Bren 2 Ms semi-automatic rifle as
one of the models that can be configured online.
Press Conference
On the first day of IWA OutdoorClassics 2023, CZ held a press
conference for professional journalists, which was opened by CZ
Sales Director Petr Pistelak. Afterwards, Eric Grauffel introduced
the new CZ TS 2 ORANGE sport special, spoke about the main
benefits of the CZ Shadow 2 Orange pistol, with which he won
his ninth world championship title at the 2022 IPSC Handgun
World Shoot, talked about the ongoing cooperation between
CZ and the IPSC, and shared a few updates about the new, and
already successful, EG-CZ Academy – a new multifunctional
sport shooting facility in France that’s a joint project between Eric
and CZ. Product Manager Ondrej Supka then introduced new
models in the long gun portfolio, which consisted of new calibres
for models in the CZ 600 centrefire rifle series and the new CZ
457 Varmint Synthetic rimfire rifle. He was followed by Product
Manager Jakub Mahdal, who gave a presentation about the new
22 LR calibre CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 and CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1
Carbine models. The conference was then closed by Jan Gibek,
Head of CZ Cyber Sales, who presented the CZ Configurator.
See you next year!
The CZ stand received a lot of attention during the four-day
exhibition and was constantly filled with visitors from the
professional public. We’re extremely happy that such interest was
shown in our stand and greatly appreciate the opportunity we were
given to meet our customers and supporters in person.
CZ is already looking forward to the upcoming 50th edition of
IWA OutdoorClassics, which will take place at the Nuremberg
Exhibition Centre from 29th February to 3rd March 2024.
Lumineq aims to
stand out
Lumineq, the Finnish transparent display company, offers manufacturers a high-performance
display to allow their scopes to jump out from the crowd, as Gun Trade World discovers.
Although founded
in 2021, the
infrastructure
and experts
behind Lumineq
Oy have a strong history
in display technology.
Lumineq transparent
displays are based on Thin
Film Electroluminescent
Display technology, which
has been known for decades.
The development and
manufacturing of TFEL
displays started in the 1980s
by Lohja Oy in Espoo,
Finland, under the Finlux
brand. The business was
sold to Planar systems in
1992 and then to Beneq in
2012. Beneq continued to
develop TFEL technology
under the Lumineq brand
and introduced a transparent
variant of the technology.
In 2021, the group company
considered it necessary to
establish Lumineq Oy as an
independent company, under
its parent company, Beneq
Group Oy, to solely focus on
its transparent display business,
strengthen its own brand, and
serve its customers better. In
the October of 2021 Petri
Schroderus was appointed
President of Lumineq and it
was announced that Beneq
Group Oy will have full
ownership of the subsidiary,
providing services and financial
support.
“The new arrangement will
clarify structure, improve
business focus and enhance
leadership,” said Jukka
Nieminen, CEO of Beneq
Group.
“Beneq will continue its
accelerated global growth in
semiconductor ALD and other
advanced ALD applications,
while Lumineq continues to
focus on opportunities within
the automotive and optical
segments, supplying the most
transparent displays in the
world,” Nieminen said.
Fast-forward to 2023 and
the company is quickly gaining
traction with scope and night
vision device customers. Its 75
members of staff are working
hard to grow the brand globally
and produce recticle displays
for the growing scope and
night vision scope markets.
“We already have leading
scope and night vision device
customers who believe in
our technology and worked
closely with us for their
product development,” says
Jere Manninen, Head of Sales,
Lumineq.
Key technology
The Lumineq display
technology stands out from
the crowd in a number of ways.
Firstly, the company provides
a simplified solution – its
emissive transparent display
technology can be placed
directly to the line of sight,
meaning no projection system
is needed.
The optical quality is
excellent, with over 90 per cent
of transmission and for devices
with high magnification or
scopes with first focal plane
reticles, the graphic content
can go down to 4µm details.
When it comes to durability
the inorganic and solid-state
structure makes it immune
to environmental factors
like humidity, temperature,
shock, and vibration. The
displays also work in all
lighting conditions, with a
wide adjustable brightness
range from daytime to low
light at night and even image
intensification.
Low power consumption
and their fully customisable
nature make the Lumineq
displays an exciting
proposition for scope
manufacturers.
Full customised
Most customers prefer to use
customised displays as they
want to differentiate their
design from the competition.
“We do have a standard
mass production-ready reticle
display ELT119S-RETICLE
that is popular for evaluation,
prototyping and even as a
base for a customised display,”
says Ying Xiong, Head of
Marketing, Lumineq Oy. “It
offers a good combination
of glass etched reticle and
self-emitting display reticle,
ensuring that the reticle works
at any conditions.”
Looking for growth
Right now Lumineq works
with companies in the US,
Europe, India, Japan, South
Korea and China and is
particulary excited about
its reticle displays for FFP
riflescopes because it’s the only
technology in the market right
now to support complex reticle
designs for FFP riflescopes.
Despite being a new
company Lumineq would like
to become a market leader
in offering dynamic reticle
solutions for riflescopes,
rangefinders, and night vision
devices.
“We provide a competitive
technology to empower those
manufacturers to provide
line-of-sight dynamic reticles
without sacrificing the optical
quality or reliability of the
scopes,’ says Ying.
“There are a handful of
scope manufacturers in the
process of evaluating our
technology and prototyping.
We have great confidence that
many will go further to mass
production within five years.
“Most of our products are
exported outside of Finland.
We see a great potential
growth in all markets,
including US, Europe and
Asia,” concludes Ying.
Hyperion Tac
Adjustable Scope
Mount
PIROSPORT
MOUNTS LOOKING
FOR STRONG SALES
Pirosport, the Dutch-based long-range rifle specialist, has a new addition to its
range – the Hyperion Tac Adjustable Scope Mount. Gun Trade World spoke with
owner, Pim De Waard to find out more.
All of Pirosports’ creations are
heavily field-tested before being
released and the Hyperion Tac
Adjustable Scope Mount is no
different.
“I’d like to thank the professional testers
for taking the time out to trial the Hyperion
Tac Adjustable Scope Mount to discover
if i t is capable of suiting their professional
needs,” says Pim de Waard, Owner,
Pirosport.
“I have already taken the liberty to change
the levers for screws with heavy recoil
and professional use in mind,” says Pim.
“The aforementioned screws can also be
loosened/tightened with the supplied hex
key.”
The mount has a minimum of 40 MOA
and a maximum of 200 MOA pre-set
installed. Should your customers’ want to
alter this to their own preference, they can
do so. For smaller calibres the levers can be
re-installed, however Pim advises that, for
heavy use, the current set up is best.
Also available is a mounting bracket as
well as (modular) rails so extra accessories
can be added to suit each shooter’s personal
preference.
Furthermore, a new version called the
Hyperion THD (Tactical Heavy Duty) is
being produced as we speak.
“The THD version is almost the same
but uses accessible bolts to ensure a
tight(er) grip on the mount base and thus
maintaining a zero or added elevation,” says
Pim.
“This modification was done with
heavy recoil and heavy duty use in mind
despite the fact that the system was able to
maintain a zero on an M82A1 Barret in .50
BMG.
“Should you have an interest in my scope
mount design I would of course be willing
to supply you one for further evaluation and
testing. I am quite convinced it would suit
your needs better than the current version.
Nonetheless the supplied version should
also be able to give you an idea about its
capabilities and (added) options.”
The Hyperion TAC and the newer model
Hyperion THD have an adjustment range
from 0 to 210 MOA or 60 Milradians.
Dutch Long Arms
As well as Prisport, Pim also runs a separate
brand called Dutch Long Arms, specialising
in long range rifles. The Ascalon is one of
PIROSPORT
the key models within the range, here, Pim
describes the significant characteristics of
the rifle.
“On top of the innovative bolt design, I
took the below matters into consideration
and came up with following…”
Tolerances
A lot of time and effort is taken into
chambering Ascalon barrels. In fact, with
the larger calibres a collaboration with my
favourite South African bullet magician
(Alliwyn Oberholster) is often the case.
Obviously Ascalon’s are not designed to only
shoot Peregrines, but I often pick Alliwyn’s
brain to decide on tolerances, throat angles
and land/groove dimensions. Not to mention
twist rates and bullet weights. The bolt also
runs tightly in its action, but not too tight.
Too often I have seen shooters having to
end their game due to a stuck bolt. However,
the placement of where the trigger engages
the firing pin is placed halfway of the bolt
whereas conventional bolt actions engage the
firing pin at the rear. This ensures the bolt
to stay level and thus not slightly diagonal
(as with conventional actions) when the
firing pin engages the trigger. Furthermore,
the Ascalon bolt is equipped with a floating
and replaceable bolt head. This too ensures
proper cartridge alignment, but also gives
the option of using more than one calibre.
The Ascalon XL can use cartridges from
.308 to .408 and the soon available Ascalon
XXL is even capable of firing cartridges up
to .50 BMG.
Rigidity
Okay, so that huge chunk of metal between
the barrel and the action is not just there
because I had some spare metal in my
workshop. It is in fact the heart of the
Ascalon and ensures the rigidity of the
entire system. Yes, it also acts as a recoil
lug, a way to easily swap barrels and a
safety measure, but more importantly it
enables the Ascalon to hold extremely
thick, 40-inch-long barrels in place with no
trouble at all and thus creating a very rigid
but also heavy system.
The stock
The design of the Ascalon is actually more
or less “stockless”. On top of the action
(and connected to the barrel block) is
a rail to hold (and elevate) scopes and
underneath is only a sort of housing for
the trigger mechanism and something to
attach your grip to. Both also help direct
the recoil through the two rods (mounted
above and underneath the action) towards
the shoulder piece and eventually the
shoulder. However, without revealing too
many secrets this is also done in such a
manner that heavy calibres are a lot easier
on the shooters shoulder. Finally, it is
designed in such a way that the shooter is
able to comfortably lie behind it for long
periods of time.
The trigger
I intentionally chose to use Rem 700
style triggers since these have the largest
aftermarket possibilities. However, Ascalon
rifles are standard equipped with Bix’n
Andy triggers from Austria. Simply one of
the best triggers on the market. By the way,
these triggers are without a safety. As can
be seen Ascalon rifles only know a safety
to be engaged by moving the Bolt upward.
We all know only to load a round in a
safe direction and keeping the bolt handle
upwards is by far the safest way to secure a
rifle since it is impossible for it to go off in
that condition.
Lock time
A short as possible lock time is achieved
by a strong firing pin spring, a light body,
a short travel and the fact that the trigger
engages the trigger half-way on the bolt
eliminating the need for long springs and
strikers.
The brake
All Ascalon’s are equipped with in-house
designed brakes that do what they are
supposed to. They reduce recoil to what
we believe is the utmost minimum. My
still intact shoulder and eyebrow can
testify that we managed to make them
work.
GREAT GEAR
KNIVES FOR LAW
ENFORCEMENT
As a law enforcement officer, having the right tools is crucial to your performance on duty,
as well as your personal safety. One of the most important tools to have on your duty belt
is a knife – a good knife can help you in a variety of situations, from cutting seat belts to
defending yourself in close-quarters combat. Here, we take a closer look at knives for law
enforcement and provide insights on what to look for when choosing a knife.
TYPES OF KNIVES
There are many different types of knives
available for law enforcement officers.
Some of the most common types are
folders, fixed blades, and multi-tools.
Folding knives are one of the most popular
types of knives for law enforcement.
They are easy to carry and can be opened
quickly with one hand. Folding knives
come in a variety of blade shapes and sizes,
so you can choose one that fits your needs.
Fixed blade knives are another popular
option for law enforcement officers. They
are more durable than folding knives and
can be used for heavier tasks. However,
they are also larger and more difficult
to carry. Multi-tool knives are knives
that also have other tools, such as pliers,
screwdrivers, and saws. These knives can
be very useful for law enforcement officers
who need to perform a variety of tasks.
BLADE SHAPE, MATERIAL AND LENGTH
The material that a knife blade is made
of is an important factor to consider
when choosing a knife. Some of the
most common materials include stainless
steel, carbon steel, titanium, and ceramic.
Stainless steel is a popular material for
knife blades because it is durable and
resists corrosion. However, it can be more
difficult to sharpen than other materials.
Carbon steel is a strong and durable
material that is easy to sharpen. However,
it can be prone to rust and corrosion.
Titanium is a lightweight and strong
material that is resistant to corrosion.
However, it can be more expensive than
other materials. Ceramic blades are very
sharp and lightweight. However, they are
also brittle and can be prone to breaking.
The shape of a knife blade can also be
an important factor to consider. Drop
point blades have a curved edge that
drops down towards the point of the
knife. This shape is good for generalpurpose
tasks. Tanto blades have a
straight edge and a sharp point. This
36 www.guntradeworld.com

shape is good for piercing and can
also be used for self-defence. Clip
point blades have a straight edge that
curves up towards the point of the
knife. This shape is good for slicing
and can also be used for detail work.
The length of a knife blade is also
an important factor to consider when
choosing a knife for law enforcement.
Blade lengths between 2.5 and 3.5
inches are ideal for general-purpose
tasks. Blade lengths between 3.5 and
4.5 inches are ideal for heavier tasks,
such as cutting through seatbelts.
Blade lengths over 4.5 inches should
only be used in situations where a
longer blade is necessary, such as
search and rescue operations.
HANDLE MATERIAL
The material that a knife handle is
made of can affect its durability and
grip. Some common handle materials
are G10, aluminium, micarta and
carbon-fibre. G10 is a lightweight
and durable material that provides a
good grip even when wet. Aluminium
is a lightweight and strong material
that is also corrosion resistant.
Micarta is a durable and lightweight
material that provides a good grip
even when wet. Carbon-fibre is a
lightweight and strong material that
is also corrosion resistant.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS
Before purchasing a knife for law
enforcement, it’s important to be
aware of the legal considerations in
your area. Some countries or regions
for example have laws regulating the
type of knives or the blade length
of knives that can be carried by law
enforcement officers. So, make sure
to check your department’s knife
policy before purchasing one for duty.
Always use a knife in a way that is
consistent with your department’s
policies and procedures.
TRAINING
Knife training is an important part of
law enforcement training, especially
for those who carry a knife on their
duty belt. Proper training can help
officers use their knives safely and
effectively in a variety of situations,
from cutting through seatbelts during
a vehicle rescue to defending against
an armed assailant. Before officers
can use a knife effectively, they
must first master basic knife skills.
This includes learning how to safely
deploy and retract the blade, how to
hold and grip the knife, and how to
use the blade to make different types
of cuts. What’s more, a knife can
be a valuable tool for self-defence,
but officers must know how to
use it properly in these situations.
Defensive tactics training can help
officers learn how to effectively use
a knife in close quarters combat
situations, including how to disarm
an assailant. Like all aspects of law
enforcement training, knife training
should be scenario-based. Officers
should be exposed to a variety of
situations in which a knife may be
necessary, such as vehicle rescues,
building searches, and defensive
situations. Proper maintenance and
care of a knife is essential to ensuring
Choosing the right knife for
law enforcement can be a
difficult decision.
that it is always ready for use.
Officers should be trained on how to
clean, sharpen, and store their knives,
as well as how to identify when a
knife is no longer safe to use. Overall,
knife training is an important
component of law enforcement
training, and officers who carry a
knife should receive thorough and
ongoing training to ensure that they
can use this tool safely and effectively
in a variety of situations.
CONCLUSION
Choosing the right knife for law
enforcement can be a difficult
decision, but by considering factors
such as blade material, blade shape,
handle material, blade length, legal
considerations, and training, you
can make an informed decision that
will help keep you safe on duty.
Remember to always use your knife in
a safe and responsible manner. With
the right knife and training, you can
be confident in your ability to handle
any situation that comes your way. GTW
THe RiGHT knives FOR YOU
trusted companions, always at the ready. Knives are one of those everyday essential
tools you never leave home without. And when you do leave home without, you’ll
always encounter a chore where you would have needed one, or at least wanted one by
your side. from those compact by design and safe to carry, to full-size fixed blades and
cuing tools, having a cuing tool around makes life a lot easier, whether it is around
the house, at work or out and about. therefore, it makes perfect sense for every shooting
and hunting shop to offer an elaborate range of knives and sharpeners.
CUtting tools oF the tRADe
Knives come in many forms, shapes, and
sizes. Folding knives with, or without
various locking mechanisms, all numbers
of blades and integrated tools, fixed-blade
knives in all sizes, numerous blade shapes,
blade materials… make for a very crowded
product offering indeed. The type of knife
that makes for a useful addition to your
toolkit as a boxcutter, will not make for an
ideal butchering knife. General use knives,
multi-tools, hunting and fishing knives, gun
tools, tactical knives, all are categories with
very specific properties.
FiXeD AnD FolDing
Fixed-blade knives are the most traditional
of all knives. Naturally longer than most
folding types with their blades always
exposed, they must be carried in a sheath,
being larger, heavier and less convenient
to carry than most folding knives. Since
they are made in one piece with the tang
running right through the handle, they
are however a lot stronger than folding
knives. Evidently with their greater
strength and size, these fixed-blade knives
can tackle much heavier-duty tasks than
folding knives. This makes them essential
for heavy-duty tasks up to and including
dispatching and butchering large game
animals, cutting firewood...
With a blade hinged between the
grips, folding knives are safe to carry,
relatively compact, light and suited for
a variety of general-purpose tasks. In
their simplest form folding knives do not
feature a locking mechanism, limiting
their versatility. With knives featuring a
locking mechanism however, you can lock
the blade securely in place when opened
to prevent closure of the blade on the
user’s fingers and allow tackling more
demanding tasks than folders without
a locking mechanism can safely handle.
What’s more, many contemporary knife
designs now feature opening devices to
enable users to open their folding knives
with just one hand, adding to yet more
versatile, safe, and efficient use.
Contrary to what is commonly said,
less is not always more. Especially not
when talking about folding knives. These
come in all sorts of flavours, from singleto
multi-blade while not forgetting
intricate types such as Swiss army knives
and multi-tools. Obviously single-blade
knives are best liked for their simplicity
and compact size, although most lack the
ability to tackle multiple purposes. Multiblade
knives tend to have two or more
similarly sized blades, each with a specific
task in mind. For example, a knife with a
plain edged blade for all-purpose work, a
serrated edge for slicing and a sawblade
for working through wood and bone.
When you like having more in your pocket
than just a sharp blade, Swiss army knives
38 www.guntradeworld.com

and multitools might be just the ticket.
These knives come in many shapes and
sizes with a variety of tools within easy
grasp day in, day out. Although multiblade
and multi-tool pocketknives can
be really handy, not to mention cool,
they are also a lot bulkier and heavier
to carry around than a single-blade
knife. It’s up to you to decide what
matters most.
opening AnD loCking
An aspect worth considering when
choosing a folding knife is the opening
mechanism. Since the inception of
folding knives, our hands have been
the foremost means of opening a knife.
Either with two hands, featuring a
nail nick in the blade, or with one
hand using a thumb stud on or hole
in the blade. The assisted-opening
mechanism is relatively new. This
type features an internal mechanism
opening the knife once a certain
amount of pressure is applied to the
blade with one hand. Switchblades
meanwhile automatically open the
knife with the push of a button or the
flick of a switch. Be sure to research
your local legislation on knives since
some countries have restrictions
or even ban some of these opening
mechanisms.
Apart from some basic designs, most
folding knives feature one of a variety
of locking mechanisms to ensure the
opened blade does not incidentally
snap back on to your fingers when
in use. Without being exhaustive,
let’s look at the locking mechanism
commonly found on folders. The first
locking mechanism is the ‘ring lock’.
Operating this is easy. You turn a ring
wrapped around the pivot of the knife
to a position where a break in the
ring allows the knife to be opened.
Once the blade is out, you turn the
ring again, so that the space through
which the blade was folded out is
blocked. The ‘back lock’ mechanism
is partially visible on top of the knife.
The folding knife locks when a locking
arm, which sits along the handle spine,
is moulded with a hook that fits into a
notch on the back of the blade behind
the pivot. The ‘liner lock’ secures the
blade though a tensioned metal liner
inside the handle. As with a ‘back
lock’ opening the blade activates the
lock. A ‘frame lock’ meanwhile is very
similar to a ‘liner lock’. The locking
part however is a section of the handle
frame on the side of the knife.
on BlADes
As with the number of blades, the
same goes for blade length. Although a
big knife with an awe-inspiring
eight-inch blade might seem
impressive, just maybe a
compact folder with a small
two-inch blade to put on your
keychain might do more for
you in your daily life. Knives
with medium sized blades of
up to five inches are ideal allround
companions. Compact
enough to still be handy
compared to bigger blades yet
big enough to handle a wider
variety of chores than a really
small blade. Do not forget
to check local laws about the
blade length that is allowed.
Knife blades come with a
variety of edges: plain, partially,
or fully serrated. For allround
use, a straight edge is
preferable for push cutting (as
in peeling a pear), skinning,
carving, and chopping. It is
also far easier to sharpen a
plain edge than to sharpen a
serrated edge. When specific
tasks such as cutting fibrous
materials such as rope, netting
or slicing bread (which are all
pull cuts actually) come into
play, a serrated edge is your
better bet. The best of both
worlds is available as well.
Partially serrated edges with
a combination of both a plain
and a serrated edge is also
possible. Always keep in mind,
however, that a serrated edge
however is significantly harder
to sharpen than a plain edge so
ask yourself if you really need a
(partly) serrated edge on your
blade.
In the knife world blade
materials are always hotly
debated as there is no such
thing as the perfect blade
steel. Which is why opinions
tend to differ. Most knife
blades are made of carbon
steel or stainless steel. As the
name implies, stainless steel is
corrosion resistant, much more
than carbon steel that is prone
to rust when it’s not well cared
for. However, stainless steel is
less tough than carbon steel and
more difficult to sharpen. When
looking at robustness, ease of
use and sharpness, carbon steel
wins hands down. Keep in mind
though, that when you are not
of the caring type, stainless steel
might be the better option for
you.
GET SOME
From traditionalist hunters
to farmers, law-enforcement
professionals, bushcrafters,
campers or black-clad
doomsday preppers, there is a
knife out there made just for
you. Knives are generally much
more than just cutting tools.
These blades are purposeful
and to be used day in, day
out. What a perfect knife for
someone looks like, depends
on their daily jobs to be done.
A paramedic might require
a completely different knife
design than a soldier, an office
manager, hunter, or logistics
worker. The best knife for
one person might be nearly
useless for the next. People’s
lives, as well as needs, are
probably very different so
they require different things
from the tools we carry. Luckily
one doesn’t have to be a
collector to own and use several
knives. The beauty of knives is
they have a natural attraction
but still don’t cost the world.
It’s quite normal for someone
to carry around a folding pocket
knife all day, have a multi-tool
in the car and a larger fixedblade
hunting knife ready to
hang on your belt when the big
outdoors calls. It’s up to the
retailer to stock up the right
blades for the region they are in,
regularly introduce new models
and, most of all, show them to
the customers, let them ‘play’
with them. Knives are ideal
products to make people want
to buy. GTW
You only need to walk the aisles of SHOT Show or IWA OutdoorClassics
to understand that the transcontinental country of Turkey is one of the
global firearms industry’s major players. Gun Trade World investigates
the key characteristics of the country to explore if Turkey could
represent your next business opportunity.
S
Turkey, officially the
Republic of Türkiye, is a
transcontinental country
located mainly on the
Anatolian Peninsula in
Western Asia, with a small
portion on the Balkan
Peninsula in Southeast
Europe. It borders the Black
Sea to the north; Georgia
to the northeast; Armenia,
Azerbaijan, and Iran to the
east; Iraq to the southeast;
Syria and the Mediterranean
Sea to the south; the
Aegean Sea to the west;
and Greece and Bulgaria
to the northwest. Cyprus is
off the south coast. Most
of the country’s citizens are
ethnic Turks, while Kurds are
the largest ethnic minority.
Ankara is Turkey’s capital and
second-largest city; Istanbul
is its largest city and main
fiscal hub.
Turkey’s amazing ecology
and habitat variety has
produced considerable species
diversity. Anatolia is the
home of many plants that
have been cultivated for food
since the advent of farming,
and the wild descendants
of many plants that now
provide staples for people
still flourish in Turkey. The
diversity of Turkey’s fauna
is even greater than that
of its flora. The number of
animal species in the whole
of Europe is around 60,000,
while in Turkey there are
over 80,000 (over 100,000
counting the subspecies).
The Northern Anatolian
conifer and deciduous forests
is an ecoregion which covers
most of the Pontic Mountains
in northern Turkey, while
the Caucasus mixed forests
extend across the eastern
end of the range. The
region is home to Eurasian
wildlife such as the Eurasian
HUNTING IN TURKEY
Hunts in Turkey take place
in the heart of some of
the world’s most stunning
scenery, including rockstrewn
mountains and
striking coastal regions.
There are also a wide range
Stronger than anticipated private consumption drove
rapid growth of 7.5 percent y-o-y in the first half of
2022, as rising inflation expectations fuelled purchases
of durables despite inflation eroding real incomes.
Merchandise export growth and tourism revenues
remained robust, supported by a weaker currency and
resilient external demand. Labour market recovery
continued into 2022.
After expanding 11 percent in 2021, the economy is
expected to grow 4.7 percent in 2022 and 2.7 percent
in 2023. Economic activity is expected to weaken in
the second half of 2022, as macroeconomic volatility
intensifies, inflation erodes the purchasing power of
households that can no longer frontload consumption,
and external demand weakens.
Despite labour market and economic recovery in
2021, the poverty rate is projected to remain above
pre-2019 levels due to persistently high inflation that
affects the lowest-income households the most as
they spend a higher share of income on items like
food that face higher than average inflation.
DOING BUSINESS WITH... TURKEY
Bezoar Ibex
The bezoar ibex, which weighs
around 60kg (130lb) is known
particularly for the size of its horns;
it possess the world’s longest horns
in relation to body weight, and can
exceed 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) high, those
in the south and east desert ranges
are typically smaller by 30 percent.
Females are slightly smaller and
their horns tend to grow to 0.2 m
(7.9 in). Males have a dark brown
summer coat, while the females have
a more reddish-gold, and both sexes
shift to a gray-colored coat in winter.
Both sexes also have a tuft of hair
extending from the chin. The ibexes
have a black stripe from the spine
that extends over the shoulder, limbs,
and neck. This stripe darkens in the
mating season.
Named “Geyik” by Anatolian
local’s, lives in the steep hills,
particularly locations covered with
forests and short bushes, beginning
from the sea level at Aegean and up
to an altitude of 3000 metres in East
Turkey. It is known as one of, if not
the greatest ibex species on earth.
High trophy ranks and world record
ibex always came from Turkey. The
Turkish government has provided a
great increase in the population with
a close protection program to the
ibex habitat. An Ibex weights about
50-85kg.
Hunting season: August to March.
of species to hunt, including
the Bezoar ibex, red stag,
chamois, roe deer, wild boar,
and Konya sheep.
Turkey is well known for
its architectural marvels,
first-rate shopping, and its
rich history as the meeting
point of Asia and Europe. But
this charming country offers
wonderful hunting
as well. Its wildlife
is well managed, and
the country has an
advanced tourism
foundation that
includes a number
of knowledgeable
hunting outfitters.
Most of the hunting
in Turkey takes
place in areas that
are mountainous
and remote, and
the hunting can
be challenging.
Depending on the
area, hunters may
stay in cabins, lodges, or local
hotels. The most sought-after
species in Turkey is the bezoar
ibex. This species inhabits
Iran, Armenia, and Turkey;
with Turkey holding the
largest populations. Bezoar
ibex are among the most
striking of all ibex species
and have horns that can
reach 55 inches, although 45
inches is more typical. Other
species to hunt in Turkey
include the Anatolian red stag
(found exclusively in Turkey),
Anatolian chamois, hybrid
ibex, roe deer, and wild boar.
There are also a few special
permits available each year for
Konya sheep, a beautiful wild
sheep found only in Turkey’s
Bozdag Mountains.
There are many wild boar
in Turkey, mainly because
the Muslim religion forbids
the eating of pork. Therefore,
male wild boar can grow very
large, up to 300kg with access
to rich feeding opportunities
all year round. Male wild boar
may live up to 15 years of age
and can grow lengthy tusks
up to 30cm. Wild boar can
exist in mountainous regions,
where there is extensive
forest and bush. The wild
boar are mainly nocturnal,
although they can be found
feeding in early morning or
late afternoon depending on
the region and season. The
rutting season starts around
November and lasts about
one month until December.
Only during this season do
the big boars join the herds
of sows and young. Mature
males generally live alone
and form a zone of their own.
The best time to hunt the
largest timeworn boars is from
February to October.
GUN LAW
Gun ownership is subject to
strict laws in Turkey, where
extensive background checks
are carried out by police before
people can acquire a license
to own and carry a firearm.
Licenses are divided into two
categories – carrying and
ownership – and violations are
Anatolian Gazelle
The Anatolian gazelle, which lives
amongst Turkey’s southern cities
of Şanlıurfa, is distinguished by its
delicate figure, thin legs and big
eyes. It prefers to live on terrain
that is not rough, where the land
is sandy, hilly with sparse woods
and is not fond of valley bases
and river sides. It stays in groups.
When the weather gets too hot
in the afternoon, it lays on shady
parts of the hills, rocks and trees.
It weighs around 15 to 25kg.
It runs at high speed, without
the leaping, bounding gait seen in
other gazelle species. Throughout
much of their range, goitered
gazelles migrate seasonally.
Herds cover 10–30 km per day in
the winter, with these distances
being reduced to about 1–3 km in
summer.
Hunting Season: September -
December.
TURKEY
Anatolian Chamois
The chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) or Alpine
chamois is a species of goat-antelope native
to mountains in Europe, from west to east,
including the Alps, the Dinarides, the Tatra and the
Carpathian Mountains, the Balkan Mountains, the
Rila–Rhodope massif, Pindus, the north-eastern
mountains of Turkey, and the Caucasus. The
chamois has also been introduced to the South
Island of New Zealand.
Chamois lives on the rocky and uncovered
areas above the border line of forests and in in
summer can also spread in to the deep, bushy, and
wooded valleys. In winter it lives in steep valley
forest. It weighs about 35 to 50kg. It’s light brown
fur in summer turns darker, almost black in winter.
The hunt is generally done during the mating
period by stalking. This hunt requires a good body
fitness.
Hunting Season: August - January.
Gun licenses are currently
assigned to eligible persons
for five years in Turkey, and a
one-time fee of 7,606 Turkish
Liras is required as part of the
application.
A recent amendment to
Turkey’s firearms regulations
expanded eligibility for
personal armament in the
country, allowing for more
public servants to buy
firearms.
Those who, for various
reasons, wish to carry weapons
in their homes or workplaces,
or who are required to
carry weapons, are needed
to obtain a firearms license
in accordance with the law
Firearms and Knives and
Other Tools No. 6136. All
kinds of firearms, pistols, fully
automatic weapons, or fluted
shotguns are subject to license
in terms of both possession
and transportation.
The application for a
gun license is made to
the governorships in each
Turkish province and to the
gendarmerie directorate in the
settlements in the gendarmerie
regions. According to the
relevant Turkish laws and
regulations, applicants have
to be over the age of 21.
Although there are different
requirements for carrying and
possession licenses, known as
types of gun licenses, these
licenses provide different
rights to individuals.
BUSiNeSS
The license to carry a gun
allows the license holder to
carry his/her registered gun. In
this case, it is possible to carry
the weapon with the person or
to keep it in their vehicle. Since
the license to carry a weapon
will also permit the licensing
of the bullets of the relevant
weapon, it will be possible to
carry an appropriate number
of bullets in the weapon or
with it. Carrying high-volume
bullets is only possible with
the permission of the Turkish
governor. According to the
types of weapons licenses, the
number of bullets that can be
possessed during the year is
determined.
What Are the Documents
Required for a Gun License in
Turkey?
• Original and copy of identity
card Passport
• Photo taken in the last six
months
• Residence Permit
• Transcript of Criminal
Records
• A document to be obtained
from the tax office stating that
there is no tax debt exceeding a
certain amount, provided that
it has been received within the
last 15 days as of the date of
application,
• Health committee report to
be obtained from state hospitals
is requested.
In addition to these
documents, other important
documents are also required in
applications for a gun carrying
license. It is obligatory to
purchase weapons within one
year as of the date of obtaining
the license and to operate the
license within 60 days at the
latest as of the date of receipt.
The gun license renewal process
must be carried out every five
years.
What Are the Weapons
Requiring Licenses in Turkey?
According to Turkish law,
Regulation No. 2735 on
Firearms and Knives and Other
Tools defines the types of
weapons that require a license.
Firearms that require a license
according to the relevant
regulation are:
• Pistol
• Fully Automatic Weapons
• Fluted shotgun
Although different types
of licenses are required in
practice for different types of
weapons, the application for
gun licenses for all firearms
will include similar stages. If
the conditions for obtaining a
weapon license specified in the
relevant regulation are met, an
application for a weapon license
can be made.
THE
FAUSTI
RANGE
The Caledon over-and-under
could be described as the admission
into Fausti’s range of shotguns and
certainly a top-seller within the
Italian company’s selection.
Here, Gun Trade World previews
the feature-packed shotgun.
48 WWW.GUNTRADEWORLD.COM

FAUSTI
Fausti Arms, founded in 1948, has grown and
evolved constantly, relying on the experience and
traditions that are at the core of its business. The
Italian company follows and applies the values
and passion that has animated and influenced all
important choices in the Fausti family since day one.
Now, the company can boost a complete selection
of shotguns, in many different styles, meaning your
customers will always have a Fausti shotgun that suits
their needs.
Within the company’s Core line of over-and-under
shotguns comes the Caledon- the ideal choice for those
looking for reliability and careful construction combined
with understated elegance.
Caledon – the perfect choice
The chrome-finished receiver featured on the Caledon
presents a clear but soft contrast between the smooth
section and the laser-engraved portion, with traditional
acanthus leaf motifs conveying light and shade. This is
enriched on the chest by a golden partridge in flight,
standing out in gold, with the Fausti logo looking
fantastic within the deep black of the watch and on the
key, giving a refined appearance. Sculpted and engraved
breasts form a nice contrast with the reeds that welcome
the top tang which also features pleasant detailing.
The silver of the receiver marries with the flames of
the woods, made of walnut, and subjected to a wood laser
grain treatment for an aesthetic result worthy of higherpriced
shotguns.
The Caledon is available in five gauges, from 12
to .410, with a dedicated action frame up to 28, a
solution that guarantees greater elegance, better ballistic
performance, and superior ease of use due to its low
weight and excellent balance.
The box lock action is accompanied by a selective
single trigger with clear and fast clicks.
Four Locks System
As found on other Fausti over-and-under shotguns, the
Caledon also boasts components machined from the
solid and exclusive Four Locks system: four lugs that
work together to create an unbreakable lock. Such a
lock allows you to fire thousands of shots without any
problems, even with the most potent ammunition, and
improve accuracy. Indeed, it opposes the forces that
would tend to move the barrels along the vertical and
horizontal axes of the receiver at the moment of firing.
To this end, a second pair of lugs inside the receiver’s
sides support the usual one carved into the monobloc of
the barrels, ensuring even, lateral closure and a perfect
mechanical seal. These shotguns guarantee higher
reliability and durability, even when subjected to intense
and prolonged use when competition shooting or on
duck or driven hunts.
The wide range of choice in barrel size and
interchangeable chokes allows the user to have the
shotgun that best meets their needs.
The Fausti team says that “The look, handling and
quality of the Caledon make it the best choice of
shotgun in its class.”
A very consolidated and strong team have formed and
matured over the years at Fausti and they are ready and
capable to successfully face the constant changes within
the market place and in the needs of dealers across the
globe.
“It is only through teamwork and strategic use of
individual strengths and talents that Fausti can achieve
a high level of efficiency in every company department,
from the machine shop to the finishing department,
where manual work is flawlessly performed by a group of
artisans,” says Fausti.
While Fausti is understandably deeply rooted in the
traditions and values of its past, the company is also
constantly striving for innovation. Fausti is in the perfect
place to produce a wide range of shotguns that combine
substance and beauty and meet the needs and desires
of the most demanding and discerning hunters and
shooters.
Over-and-under Shotguns
Despite its more sportive and modern image, an
over-and-under shotgun is still a very elegant and
fine firearm. Fast to mount, well balanced, safe in the
shooter’s hands and steady on the second shot, an overand-under
shotgun moves as the shooter moves and fully
empowers his/her rapid shots either chasing wild game
or hitting that last target. Thanks to the quality of the
engineering and materials as well as the employment of
the patented Four Locks mechanism, Fausti over-andunder
shotguns are second to none when it comes to
light weight, balance, reliability, and durability. Fausti
says that the attention to detail and the level of manual
finishing helps tell them apart from any other gun on
the market today, as well as the elegant lines and the
unobtrusive, but visible presence of the company logo on
the trigger guard and the top lever.
The Core Range
Every Fausti over-and-under shotgun in the Core
line features an action proportioned to the gauge and
caliber, the exclusive Four Locks system and components
machined from solid blocks of materials, as well as
uncompromised manufacturing standards, high barrel
performance and fast and crisp triggers. The emphasis
put on the intrinsic quality of the guns in this line
does not take anything away from its looks: from oilpolished
stocks to coin-finished or case-coloured actions
embellished by strongly evocative laser engraving.
When you go for a Fausti over and under shotgun, you
go for much more than ‘just’ a gun.
MOSSBERG
Mossberg wins two
NRA Publications
Golden Bullseye awards
O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., a leading American firearms manufacturer, was recognised with
two National Rifle Association (NRA) Publications Golden Bullseye Awards, presented during
the recent NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl
autoloading shotgun was awarded
Shotgun of the Year by American
Hunter and the Mossberg 940 Pro
Tactical autoloading shotgun was
recognised as the Long Gun of the Year
by NRA Women.
Winners of the NRA Golden Bullseye
Awards are selected by a committee
consisting of editors, graphic designers
and veteran NRA Publications staff,
representing more than a century of
collective experience in the shooting and
hunting industry. For consideration of
a Golden Bullseye Award, the product
must be recently introduced and available
to consumers; evaluated by an NRA
staff member or regular contributor to
the magazine; exceeded the evaluator’s
expectations; be innovative in design and
function; and styled in a manner befitting
the shooting and hunting industry. This
year’s awards celebrated 21 years of
recognition for the best new products in
the shooting sports.
The Mossberg 940 Pro autoloading
shotgun platform is based on a cleanerrunning
and redesigned gas-operating
system that features corrosion-resistant
internal parts and finishes. Other key
design features include an enlarged and
bevelled loading port, elongated, pinchfree
elevator and bright orange anodized
follower configured for ease of loading.
Externally, 940 Pro shotguns have an
adjustable length-of-pull stock and for
added customisation, shims for drop at
comb and cast adjustments. The forend
features a slim profile; and both stock
and forend feature Mossberg’s signature
aggressive texturing for a secure grip.
Available models include competition,
waterfowl, turkey, field, and tactical; and
select models feature optic-cut receivers
for direct mounting of microdot sights.
Accepting the awards was Richard
Kirk, Mossberg’s Senior Director of
Marketing, “What a tremendous honour;
and on behalf of everyone at Mossberg,
I would like to express our appreciation
to the NRA Publications staff, and
specifically to NRA Woman and
American Hunter for recognition of our
940 Pro shotgun,” remarked Kirk.
Streamlight
Color-Rite ® : A light for
every situation
Streamlight’s brand new Color-Rite Technology ® allows professional users to see the subtle
details in colour, crucial in many specialised scenarios. Here, Gun Trade World looks deeper
into the technology.
IT'S TIME FOR A
Color-Rite Technology is based on
the Color Rendering Index (CRI)
– a scale from 0-100 that indicates
how a light source reflects colour
variations as they appear to the human
eye. The higher the CRI, the more
vibrant the colours appear. On the scale,
lights that measure 90+ are considered
“high” CRI lights and are critical for
tasks requiring the most accurate colour
discrimination. A perfect 100 would
enable us to see colours as they appear
in natural sunlight. Colour temperature
is also an important measurement when
it comes to Color-Rite Technology.
Colour temperature is expressed in
Kelvin (K) units, which measure the
temperature and colour produced by
LEDs. The Kelvin scale goes from warm
(yellow tone) to cool (blue tone). Most
LEDs used in Streamlight’s Color-Rite
products are rated 3,000K to 4,000K,
which is considered a warm, white
colour.
Why Streamlight’s Color-Rite
Technology?
Flashlights equipped with Streamlight’s
proprietary Color-Rite Technology
allow users to see the colour spectrum
as they would in natural light. While
a standard high-lumen LED light
produces an ultra-bright white beam
that is needed in many applications, it
prevents seeing subtle colour differences
in, for example, auto body paint colours
or electrical wiring. In contrast, a high
CRI light provides a softer, warmer
beam to prevent colour “washout,”
allowing the user to see specific colours
or imperfections and subtle details,
regardless of the task.
Streamlight Color-Rite: Lights for
Every Situation
Streamlight offers a family of Color-Rite
lights for situations that require detailed
inspections or colour differentiation. For
markets as diverse as law enforcement,
military, and even outdoor recreation, the
company has developed high CRI lights
with Color-Rite Technology for a wide
variety of tasks that require exacting
attention to detail. From examining
forensic evidence to tracking in lowlight
conditions, count on Streamlight’s
Color-Rite products to help get the job
done efficiently and safely.
The Streamlight family of Color-Rite
products include the following:
Dualie® 3AA Color-Rite®: Intrinsically
safe, multi-function, dual beam
flashlight with a cool white LED
and a 90 CRI LED (4,000K) with
Streamlight’s Color-Rite Technology.
Stinger Switchblade®: Five lights in
one: a droplight, hands-free light, UV
light, bright white light, and a warm
white (4,000K) high CRI light with
Streamlight’s Color-Rite Technology.
Strion Switchblade®: A more compact
version of the Stinger Switchblade
with the same great features and
a warm white (4,000K) high CRI
light with Streamlight’s Color-Rite
Technology.
FlipMate®: Compact work light with
cool white LEDs and 90 CRI LEDs
(4,000K) with Streamlight’s Color-Rite
Technology - each with high and low
modes.
Syclone®: Ultra-compact work light
with a cool white LED and a 90 CRI
LED (4,000K) with Streamlight’s
Color-Rite Technology.
Stinger® Color-Rite®: Rechargeable,
warm white 90 CRI LED (3,000K)
with Streamlight’s Color-Rite
Technology.
Color-Rite application for law
enforcement/military
• Improve tracking in low-light
conditions. High CRI lights like the
Stinger Color-Rite help border patrol
and other law enforcement agencies
reveal subtle details of tracks and other
markings that white LEDs with their
bright “hot spots” can miss.
• Detect trace evidence. Forensic teams
can more clearly spot fingerprints,
fibres, and other trace evidence on glass
and other slick surfaces with high CRI
lights such as the Stinger Color-Rite.
• Enhance visualisation. High CRI
lights can help cut through murky lake
or ocean water, thick smoke or fog, and
even heavy dust when pursuing vehicles
in rough terrain.
Color-Rite application for outdoor
recreation
• Identify blood trails. State-of-the-art
blood trailing technology in high CRI
lights, such as the Stinger Color-Rite,
reduces certain colours in the spectrum
to better amplify blood trails.
• Visualise in low-light conditions.
Hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts
use high CRI lights like the Dualie
3AA Color-Rite to better see obstacles
when navigating trails at night and
under other low-light conditions.
