Following the laws set out by 

a country’s government is a 

fundamental part of running 

a business. Fall foul of the law 

and you can be in big trouble, 

plus it’s not great marketing for your 

business. 

Our market, perhaps more than any 

other business sector, must constantly 

keep its fingers on the pulse of the latest 

changes in law. Gun industry laws are 

ever changing, making it difficult to stay 

on top of them all. This is particularly 

true for companies that export to many 

different countries – each with their 

own laws that have to be accepted. 

Retailers also battle with law change 

on a regular basis and smaller shops, 

with less staff, have a hard task on their 

hands to keep up, especially when trying 

to stay on top of all the other tasks 

needed to run a successful business. 

Let’s look at the USA as an example; 

each State has its own rules and 

regulations. In 2022 there were a lot of 

changes across a lot of US States. 

For instance, in the State of 

California, five Bills were passed which 

included restrictions on marketing 

firearms and stricter licensing 

procedures. 

Colorado brought in a strange Bill, 

prohibiting open carry near to polling 

locations, while Deleware introduced 

a package of measures to regulate 

high-capacity magazines and stiffer 

background checks. Over in New Jersey 

several Bills were signed, which included 

the regulation of handgun ammo sales 

and legislation allowing the State’s 

Attorney General to sue members of the 

firearm industry for violations stemming 

from the sale or marketing of firearms. 

More Bills were signed in Washington, 

Vermont, Rhode Island and Oregon, 

amongst others. 

This shows the scale of changes and 

certainly makes it difficult for retailers 

and manufacturers to keep on top but, 

crucially, plan for the future in terms of 

products to bring to market and to stock 

on retail shelves. Organisations such 

as the NSSF do a great job in helping 

businesses deal with the ever-changing 

landscape, so it always pays to become 

a member of your local shooting trade 

associations.

322 PER CENT SINCE 2008 

The total economic impact of 

the firearm and ammunition 

industry in the United States 

increased to $80.73 billion in 

2022 from $19.1 billion in 2008, a 322 

percent increase, while the total number 

of full-time equivalent jobs rose to over 

393,696 from approximately 166,000, 

a 136 percent increase in that same 

period, according to a report released by 

the NSSF, The Firearm Industry Trade 

Association. 

On a year-over-year basis, the 

industry’s economic impact rose to 

$80.73 billion in 2022 from $70.52 

billion in 2021. Total jobs increased 

by over 17,877 in the same period, to 

396,696 from 375,819. The firearm 

industry has broader impacts throughout 

the economy. It supports and generates 

business for firms seemingly unrelated 

to firearms, at a time when every job in 

America counts. These are real people, 

with real jobs, working in industries as 

varied as banking, retail, accounting, 

metalworking and printing among others. 

The firearm and ammunition industry 

paid over $7.48 billion in business 

taxes, including property, income and 

sales-based levies. An additional $1.15 

billion was paid in federal excise taxes, 

which directly contributes to wildlife 

conservation. 

“Our industry’s economic input is 

undeniably contributing to every state 

and every community. This milestone 

achievement of over $80 billion in 

economic impact proves that the 

American firearm and ammunition 

industry is strong,” said Joe Bartozzi, 

NSSF President and CEO. “Ours is an

Associates’ 2022 “Hunting & Shooting

International Lynx Conference in Slovenia 

The silent comeback of the lynx 

– how hunters support lynx 

conservation in Europe 

For 50 years, hunters in 

Slovenia have supported the 

recovery and conservation 

of the Eurasian lynx. On 2 

March 1973, hunters and 

foresters brought the first 

lynx back to Slovenian forests. 

The reintroduction of lynx to 

Slovenia is still considered one 

of the most successful efforts 

in the world to return lynx to 

the wild, and dedicated and 

passionate hunters were key 

partner to make this possible. 

The experience, advice and, last 

but not least, the courage of the 

generation that took the fate of 

the lynx in Slovenia into their 

own hands, were a source of 

encouragement and guidance in 

the design and implementation 

of the LIFE Lynx project that 

started in 2017. 

LIFE Lynx 

LIFE Lynx project’s primary 

objective is rescuing the 

Dinaric-SE Alpine lynx 

population from extinction 

and to preserve it in the long 

term. Before the start of the 

project, the population was 

small, isolated, and extremely 

inbred. It urgently needed 

reinforcement by introducing 

additional, healthy animals 

from another population. The 

project reinforces the Dinaric- 

SE Alpine population with 

lynx from the viable source 

population in the Carpathians, 

while maintaining high public 

support. 

The team is collaborating 

across all EU countries 

sharing this population to 

develop and implement a 

systematic approach to ensure 

long-term viability of the 

reinforced population. The 

project is a good example of 

joint efforts towards long term 

lynx conservation between 

hunters, Hunters Association 

of Slovenia, foresters from 

Slovenia Forest Service and 

scientists from University of 

Ljubljana. Hunters are key 

partners in monitoring the lynx 

populations and are standing 

strong against illegal killing. 

Last year for instance, the 

Hunters Association of Slovenia 

organized a three-day training 

for prevention and successful 

persecution of illegal killing of 

wild animals for police officers. 

The conference: international 

exchange between hunters and 

researchers 

Learning from different 

projects, sharing knowledge 

and expanding the network 

of relevant interest groups 

were the main goals of this 

conference. By listening to 

experts from Austria, Croatia, 

Germany, Italy, Slovenia and 

Switzerland, participants could 

learn from reintroduction 

projects in Europe. In total, 

FACE members from 10 

different countries joined the 

conference and contributed 

with their experience. 

Fruitful discussions about 

monitoring, stakeholder 

involvement and legal 

enforcement were promoted 

during and after the conference. 

Plenty of business cards were 

exchanged and FACE members 

and researchers actively 

planned future meetings to 

further support stakeholder 

involvement which will 

benefit lynx conservation and 

management in Europe. 

Signing a networking 

agreement of exchange of 

information on lynx presence 

With new translocations of 

lynxes within the LIFE Lynx 

project, we can assume the 

spread of the lynx population 

to Austria. For the long-term 

conservation of this lynx 

population, it is important that 

a transboundary exchange of 

information on lynx presence, 

movement, abundance, and 

good practices from the LIFE 

Lynx project is regularly 

communicated. Therefore, a 

networking agreement was 

signed by the president of the 

Styrian Hunting Association, 

the president of Hunters 

Association of Slovenia and the 

director of the Slovenia Forest 

Service. 

The signing of this document 

represents a good example of 

multi-institutional collaboration 

and cross-border coordination 

of joint lynx conservation 

actions.

the New York Police Department

the New York Police Department 

(NYPD) 9mm duty and training handgun 

ammunition contract for Speer 124-grain 

Gold Dot. The duty handgun contract 

with the largest law enforcement agency 

in the United States will supply this 

agency for up to five years with an 

expected quantity of several million 

rounds.

have signed a framework agreement for a

Sako factory in Riihimäki. 

The agreement was signed by Major 

General Jari Mikkonen, Director of 

the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics 

Command on behalf of the Finnish 

Minister of Defence, by Brigadier 

General Jonas Lotsne, Director of Land 

Systems at the Swedish Defence Materiel 

Administration (FMV) and, on behalf of 

Sako Ltd, by Raimo Karjalainen, CEO and 

Member of the Board and Dott. Franco 

Gussalli Beretta, Chairman of the Board. 

“We very much appreciate the agreement 

and thank the Swedish and Finnish 

Defence Forces for the good cooperation 

with Sako Ltd. and the trust they have 

placed in us. With this agreement, Sako 

Ltd. will return to being a manufacturer of 

semi-automatic and automatic weapons,”

its first serial procurement of assault rifles 

and personal protective weapons through 

the framework agreement. The number of

million (€78million).

NORTH CAROLINA’S 

LEGISLATURE HAS 

OPPORTUNITY TO 

RIGHT A WRONG

North Carolina’s 

General Assembly 

is at a decision 

point. It can vote 

to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s 

veto of a bill to repeal a Jim 

Crow-era law requiring a 

permit-to-purchase a pistol. 

Or it can allow the governor’s 

appeasement of special interest 

gun control groups to keep 

a law, rooted in racism, in 

place. This law was designed 

to deprive North Carolinians 

of their Second Amendment 

rights, especially African 

Americans. 

Gov. Cooper vetoed North 

Carolina’s Senate Bill 41. 

That’s legislation that would 

repeal the state’s outdated 

requirement for citizens to 

obtain a pistol purchase permit 

from their local sheriff before 

they could legally purchase 

a handgun from a federally 

licensed firearm retailer. Given 

the advances in technology and 

the background check process, 

a permit-to-purchase a pistol 

is redundant and unnecessary. 

The FBI’s National Instant 

Criminal Background Check 

System (NICS) provides an 

almost instant and up-to-date 

background check for firearm 

retailers on those customers 

wishing to purchase a firearm. 

The NICS system is used 

across the country to verify 

that firearms sold at retail are 

only transferred to those in 

good standing with the law. 

Century-old discriminatory 

law 

North Carolina’s permit-topurchase 

law is 104 years old, 

enacted in 1919. The law 

requires county sheriffs to 

approve permits for handgun 

buyers to obtain and undergo 

a background check. It also 

requires sheriffs to evaluate a 

“good moral character.” 

That subjective requirement is 

problematic 

“(The law) was actually 

facilitated for the denial 

of handguns to African 

Americans,” said state Sen. 

Jim Perry, one of the bill’s 

sponsors. 

He explained that when the 

laws were enacted in 1919, 

in order to obtain a handgun 

permit, a sheriff would 

have to declare a person as 

of “good moral character,” 

according to The Daily Tar 

Heel. 

“That’s too much arbitrary 

power for anyone to have,” 

Perry said. 

That subjective 

requirement is also 

Constitutionally specious. 

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 

Bruen decision struck down 

New York’s concealed carry 

permitting law that relied 

on authorities evaluating 

character. Gov. Cooper 

relied on the state’s ability 

to evaluate character when 

he vetoed the legislation 

repealing the state’s pistol 

permitting requirements. 

The governor’s statement 

claimed that sheriffs need to 

be able “refuse a permit based 

on signs of mental illness, 

domestic abuse incidents that 

might not be captured in a 

national database, or other

indicators that a person could 

be a danger to themselves or 

others.” 

FBI NICS 

That’s a red herring. There 

are systems in place for 

that. Those adjudicated 

as mentally defective by a 

court are listed as prohibited 

individuals by FBI NICS. 

The same applies to 

domestic abusers. Keeping 

the permitting scheme in 

place actually makes North 

Carolina less safe because 

the permits are active for five 

years. That means someone 

who receives a permit and 

later subsequently commits a 

crime that would make them 

prohibited from purchasing 

a firearm would still have 

the permit. The FBI NICS 

checks that buyer each and 

every time a purchase is 

attempted. 

N.C. Sheriffs want change 

North Carolina’s Sheriffs 

Association Executive Vice 

President and General 

Counsel Eddie Caldwell told 

media in 2021 that advances 

made by the FBI NICS 

caused them to support 

repealing the antiquated 

permit-to-purchase system. 

“Now that those 

records are uploaded, the 

[National Instant Criminal 

Background] check and the 

pistol permit are duplicative,” 

he said. 

Senate Bill 41 would 

do more to protect North 

Carolina communities. 

The legislation would 

require state agencies to 

educate the public about 

the importance of the safe 

storage of firearms and to 

facilitate the distribution 

of gun locks. That is an 

initiative the firearm industry 

supports. NSSF’s Project 

ChildSafe® has distributed 

over 40 million free firearm 

safety kits, including locking 

devices in partnership with 

15,000 law enforcement 

agencies in all 50 states and 

five U.S. territories. 

The state’s Department 

of Public Safety would 

be required to publish 

information on safe firearm 

storage methods and how 

to obtain storage devices, 

efforts supported by the 

firearm industry. That 

education would also include 

suicide prevention education, 

another initiative supported 

by NSSF. The firearm 

industry partnered with the 

American Foundation for 

Suicide Prevention (AFSP) 

to provide educational 

materials to firearm retailers 

and ranges to have a “brave 

conversation” and prevent 

suicides.

by overriding Gov. Cooper’s

OUTDOORCLASSICS

Ceska zbrojovka (CZ) showed off its latest develops at the recent IWA OutdoorClassics 

exhibition – a cross-section of firearms from its current portfolio were presented, which 

included several new and exciting products. 

CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 


CZ 

The main product on display, which dominated the 

graphics at the CZ stand, was the new CZ TS 2 Orange 

sport special. Chambered in 9 × 19 and 40 S&W, the CZ 

TS 2 is primarily designed for competing in the IPSC 

Standard division. The fundamental difference between 

this new model and other existing models in the CZ TS 2 series, as 

well as all other pistols from CZ, is its heavy polished bull barrel. 

This new barrel contributes to higher accuracy, smoother handling 

when shooting, maximum accuracy when firing fast, repetitive 

shots and an increased service life. The CZ TS 2 Orange had an 

extremely impressive debut at the 2022 IPSC Handgun World 

Shoot, where Kahlil Adrian Viray, a Filipino member of the CZ 

Shooting Team, used this model to win three gold medals in the 

Standard division – Overall category, Junior category and as a 

member of the Filipino men’s team. 

Fresh rimfire release 

A welcomed addition to the long gun segment in 2023 is the 

CZ 457 Varmint Synthetic rimfire rifle, whose creation was a result 

of customer demand. It combines the main advantages of two 

existing models in this successful series – the CZ 457 Varmint and 

the CZ 457 Synthetic – resulting in a very accurate 22 LR or 17 

HMR calibre firearm with increased resistance to adverse weather 

conditions. It’s a great choice for sport shooting and hunting at 

medium to longer distances. 

New Scorpion announcement 

In 2023, the 22 LR calibre CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 and CZ 

Scorpion Evo 3 S1 Carbine models will be added to the CZ 

portfolio. These two new additions to the internationally popular 

family of semi-automatic firearms in the pistol calibre category 

retain all of the main benefits found in the CZ Scorpion Evo 

3 series, plus the added advantages of minimal recoil, partially 

reduced weight and virtually zero bore wear. With these firearms in 

hand, experienced shooters can fully concentrate on achieving the 

most accurate shots possible, while beginners can more easily and 

quickly learn how to properly handle them. 

In addition to the cross-section of CZ firearms presented at 

IWA OutdoorClassics 2023, a selection of revolvers and pistols 

from CZ’s new sister brand Colt were also on display. 

Meeting the team 

Apart from the firearms themselves, visitors who came to the CZ 

stand could also meet and speak with CZ Product Managers and 

CZ Presenters. And as an added bonus, visitors were treated to 

three special guests who were also at the stand – three current 

world champions from the recent 2022 IPSC Handgun World 

Shoot in Thailand and members of the CZ Shooting Team: Eric 

Grauffel (9-time World Champion), Ljubisa Momcilovic and 

Kahlil Adrian Viray (3-time World Champion). These phenomenal 

shooters were happy to speak with visitors, answer their questions 

and give autographs to their fans. 

The CZ stand also featured an interactive area where visitors 

could use their imagination to “build” a firearm in accordance 

with their wants and needs using the CZ Configurator. In fact, 

customers can configure their own dream firearm in the exact same 

way in a total of seven countries: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, 

France, Germany, Poland and the USA. Since 1st March, the CZ 

Configurator now offers the CZ Bren 2 Ms semi-automatic rifle as 

one of the models that can be configured online. 

Press Conference 

On the first day of IWA OutdoorClassics 2023, CZ held a press 

conference for professional journalists, which was opened by CZ 

Sales Director Petr Pistelak. Afterwards, Eric Grauffel introduced 

the new CZ TS 2 ORANGE sport special, spoke about the main 

benefits of the CZ Shadow 2 Orange pistol, with which he won 

his ninth world championship title at the 2022 IPSC Handgun 

World Shoot, talked about the ongoing cooperation between 

CZ and the IPSC, and shared a few updates about the new, and 

already successful, EG-CZ Academy – a new multifunctional 

sport shooting facility in France that’s a joint project between Eric 

and CZ. Product Manager Ondrej Supka then introduced new 

models in the long gun portfolio, which consisted of new calibres 

for models in the CZ 600 centrefire rifle series and the new CZ 

457 Varmint Synthetic rimfire rifle. He was followed by Product 

Manager Jakub Mahdal, who gave a presentation about the new 

22 LR calibre CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 and CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 

Carbine models. The conference was then closed by Jan Gibek, 

Head of CZ Cyber Sales, who presented the CZ Configurator.

The CZ stand received a lot of attention during the four-day 

exhibition and was constantly filled with visitors from the 

professional public. We’re extremely happy that such interest was 

shown in our stand and greatly appreciate the opportunity we were 

given to meet our customers and supporters in person.

Pirosport, the Dutch-based long-range rifle specialist, has a new addition to its 

range – the Hyperion Tac Adjustable Scope Mount. Gun Trade World spoke with 

owner, Pim De Waard to find out more. 

All of Pirosports’ creations are 

heavily field-tested before being 

released and the Hyperion Tac 

Adjustable Scope Mount is no 

different. 

“I’d like to thank the professional testers 

for taking the time out to trial the Hyperion 

Tac Adjustable Scope Mount to discover 

if i t is capable of suiting their professional 

needs,” says Pim de Waard, Owner, 

Pirosport. 

“I have already taken the liberty to change 

the levers for screws with heavy recoil 

and professional use in mind,” says Pim. 

“The aforementioned screws can also be 

loosened/tightened with the supplied hex 

key.” 

The mount has a minimum of 40 MOA 

and a maximum of 200 MOA pre-set 

installed. Should your customers’ want to 

alter this to their own preference, they can 

do so. For smaller calibres the levers can be 

re-installed, however Pim advises that, for 

heavy use, the current set up is best. 

Also available is a mounting bracket as 

well as (modular) rails so extra accessories 

can be added to suit each shooter’s personal 

preference. 

Furthermore, a new version called the 

Hyperion THD (Tactical Heavy Duty) is 

being produced as we speak. 

“The THD version is almost the same 

but uses accessible bolts to ensure a 

tight(er) grip on the mount base and thus 

maintaining a zero or added elevation,” says 

Pim. 

“This modification was done with 

heavy recoil and heavy duty use in mind 

despite the fact that the system was able to 

maintain a zero on an M82A1 Barret in .50 

BMG. 

“Should you have an interest in my scope 

mount design I would of course be willing 

to supply you one for further evaluation and 

testing. I am quite convinced it would suit 

your needs better than the current version. 

Nonetheless the supplied version should 

also be able to give you an idea about its 

capabilities and (added) options.” 

The Hyperion TAC and the newer model 

Hyperion THD have an adjustment range 

from 0 to 210 MOA or 60 Milradians.

the key models within the range, here, Pim 

describes the significant characteristics of 

the rifle. 

“On top of the innovative bolt design, I 

took the below matters into consideration 

and came up with following…” 

Tolerances 

A lot of time and effort is taken into 

chambering Ascalon barrels. In fact, with 

the larger calibres a collaboration with my 

favourite South African bullet magician 

(Alliwyn Oberholster) is often the case. 

Obviously Ascalon’s are not designed to only 

shoot Peregrines, but I often pick Alliwyn’s 

brain to decide on tolerances, throat angles 

and land/groove dimensions. Not to mention 

twist rates and bullet weights. The bolt also 

runs tightly in its action, but not too tight. 

Too often I have seen shooters having to 

end their game due to a stuck bolt. However, 

the placement of where the trigger engages 

the firing pin is placed halfway of the bolt 

whereas conventional bolt actions engage the 

firing pin at the rear. This ensures the bolt 

to stay level and thus not slightly diagonal 

(as with conventional actions) when the 

firing pin engages the trigger. Furthermore, 

the Ascalon bolt is equipped with a floating 

and replaceable bolt head. This too ensures 

proper cartridge alignment, but also gives 

the option of using more than one calibre. 

The Ascalon XL can use cartridges from 

.308 to .408 and the soon available Ascalon 

XXL is even capable of firing cartridges up 

to .50 BMG. 

Rigidity 

Okay, so that huge chunk of metal between 

the barrel and the action is not just there 

because I had some spare metal in my 

workshop. It is in fact the heart of the 

Ascalon and ensures the rigidity of the 

entire system. Yes, it also acts as a recoil 

lug, a way to easily swap barrels and a 

safety measure, but more importantly it 

enables the Ascalon to hold extremely 

thick, 40-inch-long barrels in place with no 

trouble at all and thus creating a very rigid 

but also heavy system. 

The stock 

The design of the Ascalon is actually more 

or less “stockless”. On top of the action 

(and connected to the barrel block) is 

a rail to hold (and elevate) scopes and 

underneath is only a sort of housing for 

the trigger mechanism and something to 

attach your grip to. Both also help direct 

the recoil through the two rods (mounted 

above and underneath the action) towards 

the shoulder piece and eventually the 

shoulder. However, without revealing too 

many secrets this is also done in such a 

manner that heavy calibres are a lot easier 

on the shooters shoulder. Finally, it is 

designed in such a way that the shooter is 

able to comfortably lie behind it for long 

periods of time. 

The trigger 

I intentionally chose to use Rem 700 

style triggers since these have the largest 

aftermarket possibilities. However, Ascalon 

rifles are standard equipped with Bix’n 

Andy triggers from Austria. Simply one of 

the best triggers on the market. By the way, 

these triggers are without a safety. As can 

be seen Ascalon rifles only know a safety

upwards is by far the safest way to secure a 

rifle since it is impossible for it to go off in

Lock time 

A short as possible lock time is achieved 

by a strong firing pin spring, a light body, 

a short travel and the fact that the trigger 

engages the trigger half-way on the bolt 

eliminating the need for long springs and 

strikers. 

The brake 

All Ascalon’s are equipped with in-house 

designed brakes that do what they are 

supposed to. They reduce recoil to what 

we believe is the utmost minimum. My 

still intact shoulder and eyebrow can

CUtting tools oF the tRADe 

Knives come in many forms, shapes, and 

sizes. Folding knives with, or without 

various locking mechanisms, all numbers 

of blades and integrated tools, fixed-blade 

knives in all sizes, numerous blade shapes, 

blade materials… make for a very crowded 

product offering indeed. The type of knife 

that makes for a useful addition to your 

toolkit as a boxcutter, will not make for an 

ideal butchering knife. General use knives, 

multi-tools, hunting and fishing knives, gun

FiXeD AnD FolDing 

Fixed-blade knives are the most traditional 

of all knives. Naturally longer than most 

folding types with their blades always 

exposed, they must be carried in a sheath, 

being larger, heavier and less convenient 

to carry than most folding knives. Since 

they are made in one piece with the tang 

running right through the handle, they 

are however a lot stronger than folding 

knives. Evidently with their greater 

strength and size, these fixed-blade knives 

can tackle much heavier-duty tasks than 

folding knives. This makes them essential 

for heavy-duty tasks up to and including 

dispatching and butchering large game 

animals, cutting firewood... 

With a blade hinged between the 

grips, folding knives are safe to carry, 

relatively compact, light and suited for 

a variety of general-purpose tasks. In 

their simplest form folding knives do not 

feature a locking mechanism, limiting 

their versatility. With knives featuring a 

locking mechanism however, you can lock 

the blade securely in place when opened 

to prevent closure of the blade on the 

user’s fingers and allow tackling more 

demanding tasks than folders without 

a locking mechanism can safely handle. 

What’s more, many contemporary knife 

designs now feature opening devices to 

enable users to open their folding knives 

with just one hand, adding to yet more 

versatile, safe, and efficient use. 

Contrary to what is commonly said, 

less is not always more. Especially not 

when talking about folding knives. These 

come in all sorts of flavours, from singleto 

multi-blade while not forgetting 

intricate types such as Swiss army knives 

and multi-tools. Obviously single-blade 

knives are best liked for their simplicity 

and compact size, although most lack the 

ability to tackle multiple purposes. Multiblade 

knives tend to have two or more 

similarly sized blades, each with a specific 

task in mind. For example, a knife with a 

plain edged blade for all-purpose work, a 

serrated edge for slicing and a sawblade 

for working through wood and bone. 

When you like having more in your pocket 

than just a sharp blade, Swiss army knives 


and multitools might be just the ticket. 

These knives come in many shapes and 

sizes with a variety of tools within easy 

grasp day in, day out. Although multiblade 

and multi-tool pocketknives can 

be really handy, not to mention cool, 

they are also a lot bulkier and heavier 

to carry around than a single-blade 

knife. It’s up to you to decide what 

matters most. 

opening AnD loCking 

An aspect worth considering when 

choosing a folding knife is the opening 

mechanism. Since the inception of 

folding knives, our hands have been 

the foremost means of opening a knife. 

Either with two hands, featuring a 

nail nick in the blade, or with one 

hand using a thumb stud on or hole 

in the blade. The assisted-opening 

mechanism is relatively new. This 

type features an internal mechanism 

opening the knife once a certain 

amount of pressure is applied to the 

blade with one hand. Switchblades 

meanwhile automatically open the 

knife with the push of a button or the 

flick of a switch. Be sure to research 

your local legislation on knives since 

some countries have restrictions 

or even ban some of these opening 

mechanisms. 

Apart from some basic designs, most 

folding knives feature one of a variety 

of locking mechanisms to ensure the 

opened blade does not incidentally 

snap back on to your fingers when 

in use. Without being exhaustive, 

let’s look at the locking mechanism 

commonly found on folders. The first 

locking mechanism is the ‘ring lock’. 

Operating this is easy. You turn a ring 

wrapped around the pivot of the knife 

to a position where a break in the 

ring allows the knife to be opened. 

Once the blade is out, you turn the 

ring again, so that the space through 

which the blade was folded out is 

blocked. The ‘back lock’ mechanism 

is partially visible on top of the knife. 

The folding knife locks when a locking 

arm, which sits along the handle spine, 

is moulded with a hook that fits into a 

notch on the back of the blade behind 

the pivot. The ‘liner lock’ secures the 

blade though a tensioned metal liner 

inside the handle. As with a ‘back 

lock’ opening the blade activates the 

lock. A ‘frame lock’ meanwhile is very 

similar to a ‘liner lock’. The locking 

part however is a section of the handle 

frame on the side of the knife.

Knife blades come with a 

variety of edges: plain, partially, 

or fully serrated. For allround 

use, a straight edge is 

preferable for push cutting (as 

in peeling a pear), skinning, 

carving, and chopping. It is 

also far easier to sharpen a 

plain edge than to sharpen a 

serrated edge. When specific 

tasks such as cutting fibrous 

materials such as rope, netting 

or slicing bread (which are all 

pull cuts actually) come into 

play, a serrated edge is your 

better bet. The best of both 

worlds is available as well. 

Partially serrated edges with 

a combination of both a plain 

and a serrated edge is also 

possible. Always keep in mind, 

however, that a serrated edge 

however is significantly harder 

to sharpen than a plain edge so 

ask yourself if you really need a 

(partly) serrated edge on your 

blade.

debated as there is no such 

thing as the perfect blade 

steel. Which is why opinions 

tend to differ. Most knife 

blades are made of carbon 

steel or stainless steel. As the

Bezoar Ibex 

The bezoar ibex, which weighs 

around 60kg (130lb) is known 

particularly for the size of its horns; 

it possess the world’s longest horns 

in relation to body weight, and can 

exceed 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) high, those 

in the south and east desert ranges 

are typically smaller by 30 percent. 

Females are slightly smaller and 

their horns tend to grow to 0.2 m 

(7.9 in). Males have a dark brown 

summer coat, while the females have 

a more reddish-gold, and both sexes 

shift to a gray-colored coat in winter. 

Both sexes also have a tuft of hair 

extending from the chin. The ibexes 

have a black stripe from the spine 

that extends over the shoulder, limbs, 

and neck. This stripe darkens in the 

mating season. 

Named “Geyik” by Anatolian 

local’s, lives in the steep hills, 

particularly locations covered with 

forests and short bushes, beginning 

from the sea level at Aegean and up 

to an altitude of 3000 metres in East 

Turkey. It is known as one of, if not 

the greatest ibex species on earth. 

High trophy ranks and world record 

ibex always came from Turkey. The 

Turkish government has provided a 

great increase in the population with 

a close protection program to the 

ibex habitat. An Ibex weights about 

50-85kg.

Most of the hunting 

in Turkey takes 

place in areas that 

are mountainous 

and remote, and 

the hunting can 

be challenging. 

Depending on the 

area, hunters may 

stay in cabins, lodges, or local 

hotels. The most sought-after 

species in Turkey is the bezoar 

ibex. This species inhabits 

Iran, Armenia, and Turkey; 

with Turkey holding the 

largest populations. Bezoar 

ibex are among the most 

striking of all ibex species 

and have horns that can 

reach 55 inches, although 45 

inches is more typical. Other 

species to hunt in Turkey 

include the Anatolian red stag 

(found exclusively in Turkey), 

Anatolian chamois, hybrid 

ibex, roe deer, and wild boar. 

There are also a few special 

permits available each year for 

Konya sheep, a beautiful wild 

sheep found only in Turkey’s 

Bozdag Mountains. 

There are many wild boar 

in Turkey, mainly because 

the Muslim religion forbids 

the eating of pork. Therefore, 

male wild boar can grow very 

large, up to 300kg with access 

to rich feeding opportunities 

all year round. Male wild boar 

may live up to 15 years of age 

and can grow lengthy tusks 

up to 30cm. Wild boar can 

exist in mountainous regions, 

where there is extensive 

forest and bush. The wild 

boar are mainly nocturnal, 

although they can be found 

feeding in early morning or 

late afternoon depending on 

the region and season. The 

rutting season starts around 

November and lasts about 

one month until December. 

Only during this season do 

the big boars join the herds 

of sows and young. Mature 

males generally live alone 

and form a zone of their own. 

The best time to hunt the 

largest timeworn boars is from 

February to October. 

GUN LAW 

Gun ownership is subject to 

strict laws in Turkey, where 

extensive background checks 

are carried out by police before 

people can acquire a license 

to own and carry a firearm.

Anatolian Gazelle 

The Anatolian gazelle, which lives 

amongst Turkey’s southern cities 

of Şanlıurfa, is distinguished by its 

delicate figure, thin legs and big 

eyes. It prefers to live on terrain 

that is not rough, where the land 

is sandy, hilly with sparse woods 

and is not fond of valley bases 

and river sides. It stays in groups. 

When the weather gets too hot 

in the afternoon, it lays on shady 

parts of the hills, rocks and trees. 

It weighs around 15 to 25kg. 

It runs at high speed, without 

the leaping, bounding gait seen in 

other gazelle species. Throughout 

much of their range, goitered 

gazelles migrate seasonally. 

Herds cover 10–30 km per day in 

the winter, with these distances 

being reduced to about 1–3 km in 

summer.

TURKEY 

Anatolian Chamois 

The chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) or Alpine 

chamois is a species of goat-antelope native 

to mountains in Europe, from west to east, 

including the Alps, the Dinarides, the Tatra and the 

Carpathian Mountains, the Balkan Mountains, the 

Rila–Rhodope massif, Pindus, the north-eastern 

mountains of Turkey, and the Caucasus. The 

chamois has also been introduced to the South 

Island of New Zealand. 

Chamois lives on the rocky and uncovered 

areas above the border line of forests and in in 

summer can also spread in to the deep, bushy, and 

wooded valleys. In winter it lives in steep valley 

forest. It weighs about 35 to 50kg. It’s light brown 

fur in summer turns darker, almost black in winter. 

The hunt is generally done during the mating 

period by stalking. This hunt requires a good body 

fitness.

to obtain a firearms license 

in accordance with the law

kinds of firearms, pistols, fully 

automatic weapons, or fluted 

shotguns are subject to license 

in terms of both possession 

and transportation. 

The application for a 

gun license is made to 

the governorships in each 

Turkish province and to the 

gendarmerie directorate in the 

settlements in the gendarmerie 

regions. According to the 

relevant Turkish laws and 

regulations, applicants have 

to be over the age of 21. 

Although there are different 

requirements for carrying and 

possession licenses, known as 

types of gun licenses, these 

licenses provide different 

rights to individuals. 


BUSiNeSS 

The license to carry a gun 

allows the license holder to 

carry his/her registered gun. In 

this case, it is possible to carry 

the weapon with the person or 

to keep it in their vehicle. Since 

the license to carry a weapon 

will also permit the licensing 

of the bullets of the relevant 

weapon, it will be possible to 

carry an appropriate number 

of bullets in the weapon or 

with it. Carrying high-volume 

bullets is only possible with 

the permission of the Turkish 

governor. According to the 

types of weapons licenses, the 

number of bullets that can be 

possessed during the year is 

determined. 

What Are the Documents 

Required for a Gun License in 

Turkey? 

• Original and copy of identity

• Photo taken in the last six

• Transcript of Criminal

• A document to be obtained 

from the tax office stating that 

there is no tax debt exceeding a 

certain amount, provided that

documents, other important 

documents are also required in 

applications for a gun carrying 

license. It is obligatory to 

purchase weapons within one 

year as of the date of obtaining 

the license and to operate the 

license within 60 days at the 

latest as of the date of receipt. 

The gun license renewal process 

must be carried out every five 

years. 

What Are the Weapons 

Requiring Licenses in Turkey? 

According to Turkish law, 

Regulation No. 2735 on 

Firearms and Knives and Other 

Tools defines the types of 

weapons that require a license. 

Firearms that require a license 

according to the relevant 

regulation are:

Although different types 

of licenses are required in 

practice for different types of 

weapons, the application for 

gun licenses for all firearms 

will include similar stages. If

The General Directorate of 

Security are the civilian police 

force and a service branch 

of the Turkish Ministry of 

Interior accountable for law 

enforcement in Turkey. The 

police force is responsible for 

law enforcement in cities and 

some special locations, such as 

airports or border checkpoints, 

which are responsible for 

passport control. The police are 

often helped by the customs 

office. Traffic Police ensure the 

safety of transportation and 

also work with registration of

Ballistol launches dry 

universal wipes 

Universal Wipes in the new dispenser box from German oil care specialists, Ballistol, can be 

used to care for and clean just about anything. The dispenser box can be filled with almost 

any liquid Ballistol product. 

At the recent IWA 

OutdoorClassics exhibition, 

Ballistol launched its Universal 

Wipes - Dry into the global 

marketplace. These wipes are stored in 

a reusable dispenser box. They can be 

soaked with liquid Ballistol products as 

desired. Whether used in conjunction 

with hand disinfectant, universal oil or 

cleaning fluid, Universal Wipes - Dry 

can be used to clean and care for any 

surface. 

If the can is filled with the everpopular 

Universal Oil, for example, 

the wipes are wonderfully suitable for 

gun care as well as for stainless steel 

surfaces, wooden shafts, dog paws or 

leather care. When mixed with Ballistol 

hand disinfectant, not only can hands 

be disinfected, but also surfaces. The 

perfect allrounder is obtained, for 

example, when the universal and plastic 

cleaner is added. This combination 

cleans, among other things, car surfaces, 

plastic parts, seat covers, furniture 

surfaces or garden furniture. 

The new dry wipes from Ballistol 

are highly absorbent, lint-free, soft 

and at the same time tear and puncture 

resistant. They are made of 90 percent 

viscose, which simultaneously absorbs 

dirt and releases liquid during cleaning. 

There are 130 wipes on a roll. The 

wipes measure 20 x 19 centimetres.

are available in well-stocked specialist 

and retail stores as well as online.

Golden Bullseye awards

by NRA Women. 

Winners of the NRA Golden Bullseye 

Awards are selected by a committee 

consisting of editors, graphic designers 

and veteran NRA Publications staff, 

representing more than a century of 

collective experience in the shooting and 

hunting industry. For consideration of 

a Golden Bullseye Award, the product 

must be recently introduced and available 

to consumers; evaluated by an NRA 

staff member or regular contributor to 

the magazine; exceeded the evaluator’s 

expectations; be innovative in design and 

function; and styled in a manner befitting 

the shooting and hunting industry. This 

year’s awards celebrated 21 years of 

recognition for the best new products in 

the shooting sports. 

The Mossberg 940 Pro autoloading 

shotgun platform is based on a cleanerrunning 

and redesigned gas-operating 

system that features corrosion-resistant 

internal parts and finishes. Other key 

design features include an enlarged and 

bevelled loading port, elongated, pinchfree 

elevator and bright orange anodized 

follower configured for ease of loading. 

Externally, 940 Pro shotguns have an 

adjustable length-of-pull stock and for 

added customisation, shims for drop at 

comb and cast adjustments. The forend 

features a slim profile; and both stock 

and forend feature Mossberg’s signature 

aggressive texturing for a secure grip.

Color-Rite Technology is based on 

the Color Rendering Index (CRI) 

– a scale from 0-100 that indicates 

how a light source reflects colour 

variations as they appear to the human 

eye. The higher the CRI, the more 

vibrant the colours appear. On the scale, 

lights that measure 90+ are considered 

“high” CRI lights and are critical for 

tasks requiring the most accurate colour 

discrimination. A perfect 100 would 

enable us to see colours as they appear 

in natural sunlight. Colour temperature 

is also an important measurement when 

it comes to Color-Rite Technology. 

Colour temperature is expressed in 

Kelvin (K) units, which measure the 

temperature and colour produced by 

LEDs. The Kelvin scale goes from warm 

(yellow tone) to cool (blue tone). Most 

LEDs used in Streamlight’s Color-Rite 

products are rated 3,000K to 4,000K, 

which is considered a warm, white 

colour. 

Why Streamlight’s Color-Rite 

Technology? 

Flashlights equipped with Streamlight’s 

proprietary Color-Rite Technology 

allow users to see the colour spectrum 

as they would in natural light. While 

a standard high-lumen LED light 

produces an ultra-bright white beam 

that is needed in many applications, it 

prevents seeing subtle colour differences 

in, for example, auto body paint colours 

or electrical wiring. In contrast, a high 

CRI light provides a softer, warmer 

beam to prevent colour “washout,” 

allowing the user to see specific colours 

or imperfections and subtle details, 

regardless of the task.
