Rangi’s world record bid
PRACTICE RUN: Year 13 students (from left) Emma Comerford, Nina Cantos, Bex Skinner and year 12 students Meg
Edwards and Beth Heywood in training before they try to set a record for the most water carried over 1km by a group.
RANGI RURU Girls’ School
students will attempt to set
a new world record during
the World Vision 40 Hour
Challenge.
About 700 students will try
to break the Guinness World
Record for “the most water
carried over 1km by a group of
people” tomorrow.
The challenge is New
Zealand’s biggest youth
fundraising event. This year
the focus is on bringing
life-changing clean water to
children who desperately need
it, such as those in Malawi,
where every day, 11 kids under
the age of five die from diseases
related to dirty water. The
students will gather on the field
at lunch-time to under take
the challenge, dressed in their
house colours. •Turn to page 7
Big drop
in graffiti
across
the city
THE AMOUNT of graffiti being
removed from structures across
the city has dropped significantly.
From March to May, city
council contractors removed
15,000m 2 of graffiti, compared to
the same period last year when
21,000m 2 had to be cleaned off.
City council graffiti team
leader Kerryn Findlater said the
reduction may
be due to several
factors, including
a collaborative
approach to
preventing graffiti,
the increasing
presence of street
art in the city and
a new volunteering
programme.
“We have introduced the idea of
micro-volunteering, which gives
those who are reporting a chance
to be rewarded each month.
“It was developed after we
noticed that more than 60 per
cent of all graffiti reports came in
via our existing network of 150
volunteers; we wanted to increase
that activity and involve more of
our citizens.”
Findlater said by joining the
friend of the graffiti programme,
people become “micro-volunteers”
and can get monthly insights and
previews of new street art and go
into a draw to win a supermarket
voucher.
Cricketers get behind New World
initiative to support young players
CRICKET heavyweights Todd
Astle and Amy Satterthwaite
dropped into New World
Northwood to promote the
store’s initiative to get more
school children into cricket.
Astle, a former Black Cap,
and Satterthwaite, a former
NZ White Fern and recently
appointed Member of the New
Zealand Order of Merit for
services to cricket, were in store
last week.
The initiative was dreamt
up by New World Northwood
owner operator Greg Boock and
Kookaburra Sport Territory
Manager – South Island Blair
Franklin.
With the support of
Christchurch New Worlds,
Canterbury Cricket and
the Foodstuffs South Island
Community Trust, they have
helped raise thousands of dollars
to donate cricket gear to schools
across Christchurch.
Almost $14,000 was raised
to provide every New World
in Christchurch with 52 sets of
cricket gear to donate to local
primary schools.
As part of Foodstuffs South
Island’s commitment to be Here
for New Zealand, New World
stores have made a commitment
to support communities to
thrive, and to give back.
Coming from a sporting
family, Boock makes it a priority
to support local sports clubs in
his community, including rugby,
cricket and football. His uncle
Stephen Boock is a former New
Zealand cricketer and his other
uncle is sports journalist Richard
Boock.
“We really get behind our local
schools and scouts clubs and the
like,” Boock said.
“Sport has always been a big
part of our family, and it’s great
to be able to encourage the next
generation of Christchurch
kids to get involved, have fun
and potentially go on to do big
things.”
Franklin said it was a fantastic
initiative, and thanked New
World for helping to set it up.
fan Zara Brokenshire, New
World Ilam owner operator
Marc Brokenshire, Black Cap
Todd Astle and Canterbury
Cricket Club chief executive
Jeremy Curwin.
“We now have more children
playing cricket in these schools
than ever before, and I know
Canterbury cricket is looking to
build on this initiative to further
promote the sport in schools,”
he said.
New World Ilam owner
operator Marc Brokenshire took
his daughter Zara along to the
event on Thursday last week.
All of Brokenshire’s daughters
play cricket and he described
Zara as the most “cricketobsessed”
so it was a great
opportunity for her to be
there and get some one-on-one
time with some cricketing
legends.
Sail-ebrating big milestone
at 125yo model yacht club
One of world’s oldest
model yacht clubs
celebrates its 125th
anniversary this
weekend. Nick Tolerton
reports
THE CHRISTCHURCH Model
Yacht Club, part of the Hagley
Park scene for 125 years, has
battled plenty of obstacles to stay
afloat.
Issues with water weed,
competition from Canada geese,
and especially the February 22,
2011, earthquake, which drained
Lake Victoria like bathwater
going down a plughole, are
among the difficulties the club
has overcome.
However, at 125 the club will
have much to celebrate at its
jubilee on Saturday. With nearly
100 sailors, the membership
is the highest it has ever been
since a group of enthusiasts
established the club during a
meeting at Warner’s Hotel on
June 17, 1898.
It is the second oldest model
yacht club in the world, after
a London club in Kensington
Gardens, founded in 1876.
It’s a small miracle, though,
that the Christchurch club
got on its feet again after the
earthquake. The big shake
ruptured an unknown tile
drain under the lake bed, the
water disappeared, and the lake
became a wilderness of mud,
puddles, weed, and rubbish.
Mayor Phil Mauger gets the
credit for putting it on its feet
again – and can probably be sure
of votes from club members. The
contracting firm he had at the
time was engaged to re-establish
the lake, which had to be reexcavated,
lined with bentonite
clay half a metre thick, topped
with a coating of ground glass,
and to repair the wells which
supplied its water.
Before the quake, the club’s
big issue for many decades had
been weed, which sometimes
grew so thickly it made the lake
JUST CHAMPION: Graham Parratt, a former national trailer
yacht champion, has been the skipper to beat at Lake
Victoria for several years. PHOTOS: RODNEY FORD
unusable. The weed returned
after the quake, along with some
algae in mid-summer, but in
about 2015 the lake stabilised
and it no longer even requires
spraying for weed.
As for the Canada geese
(and ducks and ducklings), the
yachties have to compromise and
share the lake. A flock of geese
taking off when winds are light
literally takes the wind out of
their sails.
The biggest change in the
club’s history came in the 1960s
with the introduction of radiocontrolled
yachts, allowing the
operator to steer the yacht and
adjust the mainsail and jib,
which are on the same winch.
Previously skippers used vane
steering, which meant frantic
sprints around the lake to reset
the sails and vane when the yacht
reached the opposite shore.
Many of the club’s members
have been among Canterbury’s
top yachties in a variety of
‘proper’ sailing classes.
The late Graham Mander, a
Canterbury sailing great and
winner of more than a dozen
New Zealand titles in classes
including the P class, R class, X
class, and trailer yachts, adapted
with ease to the challenge of the
radio-controlled boats and was
the top competitor for many
years.
More recently the No 1
competitor has been Graham
Parratt, winner of multiple
national trailer yacht titles.
Other past or present club
members who have been
prominent in sailing and won
many Canterbury, South Island,
or national titles include Brent
Cowan (trailer yachts), Bob
Auton (trailer yachts), Laurie
Wales (Z class, Javelins, and
FDs), Dayele Hobson (OK
dinghies), Glen Church (NZ
Moths and trailer yachts),
Pete Bradley (Javelins), Keith
May (Javelins), Hugh Hobden
(International Moths), Noel
Vincent (Shearwaters and OKs),
Stan Price (Sunbursts), Bruce
Lang (keelers), and Tony Beasley
(Lasers and Noelexs).
Graham Luxon, the father
of National Party leader
Chris Luxon, well-known
photographer Euan Sarginson,
and Steve Mander, son of
Olympic sailing champion Peter
Mander, are also members.
While the club has many
ancient mariners, women
have also made an impact.
Sue Bowie was the first female
member as a 13-year-old in the
1970s and finished third in a
national junior championship.
Thysje Arthur has had a long
involvement, and the question
of who cooked dinner that night
was resolved on race days when
SUCCESS STORY: Some of
the J class skippers line up.
The class was developed at
the Christchurch club and
is now raced around the
world.
• The Christchurch Model
Yacht Club anniversary
celebration will be at
Lake Victoria on Saturday,
• Races – 1.30pm.
• Visitors can try out
sailing a radio-controlled
yacht all day
she and husband Tom crossed
tacks.
Anzan Zhang, who raced
big boats in China, spotted the
model yachts while walking in
Hagley Park, was offered the
chance to sail one, and is now a
keen member.
A wide variety of classes
have been sailed at the club, but
there is special affection for the
J class, which is now raced in
other centres and even at some
overseas clubs. Designed by Dave
Heanly based on the lines of the
famous America’s Cup yacht,
Ranger, it has a long sweeping
keel that enables it to glide
through the weed which fouled
yachts with deeper keels. Very
handily, it also fits fully rigged in
the back of a car.
So far, at least, 365 J class have
been built, fibreglass hulls from
the same mould, and one club
member, Graeme Raxworthy,
has built or restored more than
40 J class.
At one time in the 1960s,
participant numbers at the club
dropped to only six or seven
boats, and the club looked set
to go the same way as penny
farthing cycle racing which used
to be held around Lake Victoria
when it was just a swamp. How
things have changed – now
the club, which runs races on
Wednesdays and Saturdays,
looks set to flourish for many
years yet – a unique sports
institution in the heart of the
city.
World record on
bucket list
•From page 1
The students will each have a container
of their choice, which they will fill up
with water from the school pool, before
they walk around the designated 1km
course, doing everything they can not to
spill the water.
After completing the 1km distance by
about 2.15pm, they will pour their water
into six 1000-litre drums labelled with
the school’s different clan names.
The students aim to raise $8000 for
World Vision in addition to setting the
world record.
“Our hope with this record is to step
into the shoes of the people in Malawi,
who must carry 20 litres water each day
over 6km to bring fresh water to their
home,” said Rangi Ruru service council
spokesperson Molly Brown.
“We are using this as a fundraising
opportunity for students to do a
collective 40 Hour Challenge and to
raise awareness within the school of
the difference they can make to an
individual’s life through donating to the
40 Hour Challenge.
“We understand that we could never
compare this challenge to the everyday
lives of people collecting fresh water
in Malawi, but we hope that challenge
will install empathy in our students and
motivation to gain sponsorship towards
this cause,” Brown said.
Going graffiti free
a team effort
•From page 1
“We not only want to encourage people
to help keep our city graffiti-free, but we
also want to thank them. Without people
taking notice and taking action we
would not be able to be as effective or
as efficient. It truly is a team effort,”
Findlater said.
The graffiti team has also completed
recent beautification projects as part
of its ‘What’s Cool About Your School’
initiative.
Findlater said the project offers the
chance for schools to ‘adopt’ a cabinet and
showcase their schools with a mural on it
packed of proud parent moments. Two
sons graduation within days of each
other, one in Palmerston North and one
in Houston. Many air miles racked up in
five days. You can’t imagine when your
boys are at school that someday they
step off the podium holding a cherished
degree, a decorated piece of paper, that
has taken years of grind, passion and self
motivation to achieve. Makes you feel
super proud for sure, but also reminded
me that they are adult men, ready to set
out and conquer the world with passion,
integrity, hope and kindness.
Our two sons played tennis, nationally
and internationally all through school,
starting at age five. They both won many
age group National competitions and
both represented NZL in Junior Davis
Cup. Early on, Steve and I knew they
would start their university education
in the United States (despite living
across from Canterbury University),
gaining a tennis scholarship to a school
of their choice. Connor started at
the University of California Berkeley,
doing an undergraduate degree in
Sciences. Dylan went to the University of
Minnesota in Minneapolis and pursued
an undergraduate degree in finance and
supply chain management. Both sons
finished their degrees in different places.
Connor graduated first with a Batchelor
of Veterinarian Science from Massey
University. We couldn’t be prouder
or happier than a son has chosen a
career that has given Steve and I so
much purpose, enjoyment and exciting
challenges. Connor has chosen the
path of Internship, gaining a sought
after place at VSA Surgical Specialists
in Auckland, as his first job. This is a
perfect fit for Connor who has a thirst for
learning and knowledge and may want
to pursue the surgical specialist route.
Eventually oneway his home will be
McMaster & Heap though.
Dylan graduated with a Batchelor of
Arts, majoring in Economics, from
Rice University in Houston. Another
choked up moment when “ Dylan
Oliver McMaster Heap “ was called out
amongst the 800 students graduating.
Rice is a top 15 American College,
so gaining a degree from Rice and
playing on the tennis team is a huge
achievement, requiring perseverance,
full commitment and great work ethic.
Dylan is now moving to Elon University
in North Carolina to do a Masters in
Business Analytics and finish his final
year playing tennis. The world awaits
Dylan.
Not my usual patient case study article
but I wanted to share a little of my
family. I have been writing articles for 24
years now. When we bought McMaster
& Heap Vets in 1999, Connor was two
years old, Dylan and Isaac not born yet.
Our boys have grown up with parents
devoted to helping people and their
pets and the business is a part of who
they all are. They are all very proud of
the work Steve and I do - you never
know, they all may play a part in the
MMH family business oneway.
Apprenticeship Boost
offers a different path
has won a local government excellence award. PHOTO: NEWSLINE
Fire detection network
wins digital award
A CUTTING-EDGE project has won
the Datacom Award for Digital Local
Government.
Smart Christchurch was presented
the award at the LGFA Taituarā Local
Government Excellence Awards on
Thursday evening for a trial of an early
fire detection sensor network in Bottle
Lake Forest.
The technology was also highly commended
in the overall supreme award
category.
The fire detection network reduces the
risk of a fire in the popular recreational
spot, using artificial intelligence and
Internet of Things technology to monitor
conditions within the park.
City council manager of Smart
Christchurch Michael Healy said he was
thrilled the self-powered sensors received
the award.
“It’s fantastic to see the project gain this
recognition, as it helps to protect a special
part of Christchurch city.
“The technology will help protect the
forest, neighbouring properties, the
environment and wildlife of the Waitākiri
Bottle Lake Forest Park.”
MP Dan Rosewarne left high school early
to begin an automotive apprenticeship. He
knows first-hand the benefits that studying a
trade can have on young people as they enter
the workforce.
Like the 57,000 apprentices who have already
been supported by Apprenticeship Boost,
including well over 4,000 right here in
Canterbury, I know what it’s like to choose
the non-traditional pathway of vocational
education.
As someone who struggled in high school,
I vividly recall being told by my high school
careers counsellor to “just get a trade”, as
though it was a second-tier option. As it turns
out, following her advice and beginning an
automotive apprenticeship was the best thing
I could’ve done. The kinaesthetic learning style
clicked with me and helped me to boost my
work ethic, build my confidence, and eventually,
it led me to my 23 year-long career in the New
Zealand Defence Force. The vocational pathway
is one I’ve advocated for ever since.
When the pandemic arrived, this Government
saw the importance of investing in tradespeople
and those who employ them. Apprenticeship
Boost is a payment of $500 per month, per
apprentice, made direct to employers. The
payment covers the first two years of an
apprentice’s training and helps businesses to
take on new apprentices who can earn while
training towards their qualification. Currently,
more than 18,000 employers are registered with
the program.
Since the Apprenticeship Boost launched in
August of 2020, this Government has supported
more than 57,000 apprentices to stay in work
while training toward their qualification.
The Initiative has enabled the number of
young apprentices to increase by 45%, Māori
apprentices by 71%, Pacific apprentices by 97%
and women in apprenticeships by a remarkable
112%.
Apprenticeship Boost ties into the wider goal of
Budget 2023: delivering support for today and
building for tomorrow. Over the next several
decades, we will inevitably see further damage
to our roads and buildings as severe climaterelated
weather events become more frequent.
This, coupled with a growing population and
the infrastructure requirements that come with
it, mean tradespeople are more vital to our
country than ever before.
My message to young people is that if you want
to be a mechanic or a sparkie or a drainlayer, go
for it! Our country needs them, and university
is not the only path to success. I’m proud of this
Government’s record on supporting vocational
training and the work we continue to do to back
apprentices and their employers.
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
regions by arrangement.
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
Mercedes EQE breathtakingly quick
• By Bob Nettleton
IN THE last three years
Mercedes Benz has amped up its
quest to become a luxury electric
vehicle game changer, with its
efforts being spearheaded by the
EQ range.
Among them is the futuristically
styled and breathtakingly
quick EQE AMG, one of the
hottest-ever Mercedes Benz sedans
priced at a cool $220,000.
Just months after the launch of
the large luxury EQS, the EQE is
the next model series to be based
on architecture Mercedes Benz
developed specifically for its
electric models.
Riding on a slightly shorter
wheelbase than the EQS, with
shorter overhangs and more
recessed flanks, the EQE remains
a substantial high-end luxury
sedan. Interior space exceeds
the comparable ICE (Internal
Combustion Engine) Mercedes-
Benz E-Class, including interior
length (+ 80mm) and front
shoulder room (+ 27mm). The
EQE comfortably accommodates
up to five people even on longer
www.drivesouth.co.nz
journeys.
It brings sharp styling and attitude,
along with a level of standard
equipment and refinement to
what is regarded as an all-electric
alternative to the legendary
Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan.
A three-model range is offered
here and put its best foot
forward with the entry level
and attractively priced $132,100
EQE. After more power and
technology? That is offered in
abundance in the $145,000n 350
version featuring Mercedes Benz
4MATIC AWD system. Then
there’s the X-factor $200k plus
AMG 53 4MATIC. All EQE’s are
covered by a five-year unlimited
kilometre warranty and 10 years
or up to 250,000km, whatever
comes first.
The EQE 53 4MATIC+ dual
electric motors generate an epic
460 kW of power and a staggering
950 Nm of torque. Their
combined might hurtles the car
0 to 100 km/h in a mind bending
3.5 seconds – all with a handy
maximum real world all-electric
driving range of 500km. This is
around 90km less electric range
Incorporating
best motorbuys
than the other two versions.
The fit and finish of the generously
proportioned passenger
compartment is outstanding,
along with a driving position
that’s close to perfection. Both
front seats are heated and electrically
adjustable, while a panoramic
sliding sunroof lighten
ups your world and senses at the
touch of a button.
On board is the latest generation
of the MBUX multimedia
system, including MBUX
Navigation. A large centrally
mounted LED screen includes a
fingerprint scanner to activate
driver profiles. It’s hard not to
be impressed by the quality
surround sound system, smartphone
integration for Apple and
Android devices.
A smart Driving Assistance
Package includes Active Distance
Assist, Active Brake Assist
with cross-traffic function, Active
Lane Change Assist, Active
Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane,
all making for one highly active
vehicle.
AIRMATIC air suspension
and all round poise. Rear-axle
steering shortens the turning circle
during cornering and parking,
and delivers better steering
response. Comfort for a serious
high performance sedan is excellent,
and free of the sometimes
abrasive low-speed ride associated
with this type of model.
Handling is right out of the
top draw thanks to a superbly
designed, engineered and tuned
suspension providing prodigious
levels of grip. In fact I felt at
times the test vehicle was ‘super
glued’ to the road surface. With
the lithium-ion battery forming
part of the vehicles floor you
have the ideal low centre of gravity.
This further improves what’s
an already incredibly well balanced
and agile full size luxury
sedan.
RAY WHITE PAPANUI
Downsizing, Not just for Retirees
Is it time to embrace simplicity and enhance your lifestyle?
In a world that often celebrates
bigger and grander, there’s a growing
movement of Christchurch and New
Zealand homeowners who are finding
joy and fulfilment in downsizing their
properties. Whether you’re an emptynester,
a retiree, a single, couple or
simply seeking a more minimalist
lifestyle, downsizing can offer a myriad
of benefits. From reducing your
environmental footprint to freeing up
financial resources, the decision to
downsize can be both liberating and
life-changing.
Let’s explore the advantages
of downsizing:
Embracing Simplicity:
Downsizing your home allows you
to simplify your life by decluttering
and focusing on what truly matters.
A smaller living space encourages
you to evaluate your belongings and
prioritise the essentials. Letting go of
excess possessions not only creates
a more organised and peaceful
environment but also frees up time
and mental energy. By downsizing, you
can create a space that feels lighter,
cosier, and easier to maintain.
Financial Freedom:
One of the most significant
advantages of downsizing is the
potential for substantial cost savings.
Smaller homes typically come with
lower mortgage payments and
reduced utility bills. By downsizing,
you may be able to unlock equity in
your current home and use it to fund
your retirement, travel, or pursue your
passions. Furthermore, downsizing
often leads to a decrease in
maintenance and repair costs, leaving
you with more disposable income to
enjoy life’s experiences.
Enhancing Your Lifestyle:
Downsizing offers the opportunity
to reassess your priorities and align
your living space with your current
lifestyle. A smaller home can mean
less time spent on cleaning and
maintenance, allowing you to focus on
activities you truly enjoy. It may also
provide proximity to amenities such
as parks, restaurants, and cultural
attractions, enabling you to lead a
more vibrant and connected life within
your community. Downsizing can
encourage you to adopt a more active
and engaged lifestyle, as you have
fewer responsibilities tied to a larger
property.
Environmental Consciousness:
In an era where sustainability is
paramount, downsizing your home can
be a significant step toward reducing
your ecological impact. Smaller homes
require fewer resources to build and
maintain, resulting in lower energy
consumption and reduced waste
generation. Additionally, downsizing
often leads to a more efficient use
of space, promoting thoughtful
consumption and minimizing excessive
material accumulation. By embracing
a smaller footprint, you contribute
to the preservation of our planet for
future generations.
Emotional Well-being:
The decision to downsize can have
profound effects on your emotional
well-being. Letting go of unnecessary
possessions and the burdens of
maintaining a larger home can create
a sense of freedom and clarity.
Smaller spaces can foster closer
connections with loved ones, as they
naturally encourage more intimate
gatherings and quality time together.
Furthermore, downsizing offers an
opportunity for personal reinvention,
as you can curate a living environment
that reflects your current aspirations
and values.
Downsizing your home is more than a
simple act of reducing your floor area
—it’s a transformative lifestyle choice
that can enrich your life in numerous
ways. Embracing simplicity, gaining
financial freedom, enhancing your
lifestyle, supporting environmental
Family fun at Willowbank
We are so lucky to have such an amazing asset on our doorsteps in
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. It’s a place that features regularly on my
family’s activity list, particularly in the school holidays, so it was fun
to take my parents and children along for the day recently for three
generations of Sunday family fun. It’s incredible to be able to walk
through so many of New Zealand’s native plant species, viewing native
animals from kunekune pigs to kiwis, so close to home. It is well worth a
visit for locals as well as tourists, to remind us how fortunate we are to
have such a special environment.
Honouring our veterans
Each year it is a privilege to be invited to speak at our local Anzac Day
services across the electorate. It’s important for me to lay a wreath and
pay my respects to all those men and women who sacrificed so much
for the peace and freedom we all enjoy today. Anzac Day is a time for us
to reflect on the effects of a war which touched the lives of every New
Zealand family. I could not imagine what it must have been like for the
parents from this area farewelling their children as they left for war. We
will remember them.
Investing in our Future
We are living longer into our retirement, and we therefore need to
future-proof our housing options so it was good to host National’s
seniors spokesperson Ian McKelvie in the electorate recently. We had a
great discussion with CEO of Ryman Healthcare NZ when we visited the
new Rymans development site at Northwood. What is so impressive is
the level of hospital care facilities that are being incorporated into these
big retirement villages, at no cost to the Government of the day. It’s a
huge investment in our senior citizens and I feel confident that places
like the new Rymans will be a real asset to their neighbourhoods.
State-of-the-art shopping opens
Inspiring Women
As the northern area of Christchurch evolves and expands to
accommodate more families and residential growth, I was pleased to
officially open the new Belfast Countdown. Christchurch’s first ever
Green Star rated supermarket, it’s an exciting addition for the growing
community. A state-of-the-art shopping experience, along with the
separate warehouse for picking and packing online grocery orders,
the design has a focus on environmental sustainability. It’s good to see
Countdown investing in this area - I am sure the new supermarket has
added value for the residents in the area as well as providing jobs for
local families for many years to come.
It was exciting to see so many people at my Inspiring Women event,
where National’s deputy leader Nicola Willis and local fashion and
business guru Bridget Hope shared their journeys to the top. Both
Nicola and Bridget have successfully navigated raising a young family
while being leaders in their respective areas and it was inspiring to hear
them share their stories. The event was very well attended and it was
a lovely opportunity to celebrate all our inspiring women from around
Canterbury. I look forward to hosting more of my colleagues in the
electorate over the coming months ahead.
National’s commitment to
mental health
I was proud to announce National’s $20 million Mental Health
Innovation fund in Parliament with Christopher Luxon in April. This is an
acknowledgement that Wellington doesn’t always know best – we want
to support all those innovative community organisations already doing
great work across New Zealand, like Mike King’s Gumboot Friday. As the
cost-of-living crisis continues, there is growing concern among mental
health professionals that things are only going to get worse as financial
pressures build on Kiwi families. That’s why National has committed,
with this fund, to delivering faster access to mental health services by
boosting community providers and NGOs.
