‘You miss all the
shots you don’t take’
WHEN THREE friends found
out they’d been awarded the
same full-fee scholarship to
study at university, they called
everyone they knew to share the
news.
Now they’re heading back
to their old school to tell other
students why they should apply
for Canterbury University Te
Kakau a Māui scholarships.
Caoimhe Hungerford, Leonie
Jansen van Rensburg and
Izzy Froom, all 18, went from
Haeata Community Campus to
study at UC.
Moving from a familiar
school to the busy Ilam campus
has been a big step, but they’ve
had support from each other
and from the Te Kakau a Māui
scholarship programme, which
UC created to boost equity and
mark its 150th anniversary year.
The trio have been close
friends for the past three years
and were thrilled to find out last
year their scholarship applications
had been successful.
Froom, now studying towards
a Bachelor of Teaching and
Learning (primary) was the
first to get the news, texting her
friends: “Girls, it’s happened!
Check your emails.”
Hungerford, who is a firstyear
Bachelor of Digital Screen
with Honours student, said
they’d been worried that one of
them might miss out, so it was
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS: Canterbury University students Caoimhe Hungerford
(left), Leonie Jansen van Rensburg and Izzy Froom are returning to Haeata
Community Campus to spread the word about UC’s Te Kakau a Māui scholarships.
fantastic to discover they’d all
been accepted.
The scholarship has meant
she only has two part-time jobs,
including teaching dance to
children – without the scholarship,
she would have needed to
work more.
“My mum is on her own as a
solo parent. Having the scholarship
means it’s much less stress
on my family,” Hungerford said.
“I really enjoy making and
editing videos, but I’m not sure
yet specifically what I want to
do when I finish my degree.”
Froom, Jansen van Rensburg
and Hungerford are excited
about returning to Haeata this
week, on a UC-organised visit
to talk to senior students and
encourage them to apply.
“It’s cool because we can
show people that there are other
opportunities out there,”
Hungerford said.
“I want to let them know
that it’s like that saying: ‘You
miss all the shots that you don’t
take’.”
Jansen van Rensburg , a
keen netball player who is
studying towards a Bachelor
of Sport Coaching, said
students considering applying
shouldn’t be put off by doubts
about their academic ability
(although University Entrance
is required). •Turn to page 3
Big drop
in graffiti
across
the city
THE AMOUNT of graffiti being
removed from structures across
the city has dropped significantly.
From March to May, city
council contractors removed
15,000m 2 of graffiti, compared to
the same period last year when
21,000m 2 had to be cleaned off.
City council graffiti team
leader Kerryn Findlater said the
reduction may
be due to several
factors, including
a collaborative
approach to
preventing graffiti,
the increasing
presence of street
art in the city and
a new volunteering
programme.
“We have introduced the idea of
micro-volunteering, which gives
those who are reporting a chance
to be rewarded each month.
“It was developed after we
noticed that more than 60 per
cent of all graffiti reports came in
via our existing network of 150
volunteers; we wanted to increase
that activity and involve more of
our citizens.”
Findlater said by joining the
friend of the graffiti programme,
people become “micro-volunteers”
and can get monthly insights and
previews of new street art and go
into a draw to win a supermarket
voucher.
Going graffiti free
a community effort
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
•From page 1
“We not only want to
encourage people to help keep
our city graffiti-free, but we also
want to thank them. Without
people taking notice and taking
action we would not be able to be
as effective or as efficient. It truly
is a team effort,” Findlater said.
The graffiti team has also
completed recent beautification
projects as part of its ‘What’s
Cool About Your School’
initiative.
Findlater said the project offers
the chance for schools to ‘adopt’
a cabinet and showcase their
schools with a mural on it to
increase pride and ownership in
their community.
They have also begun working
with Restorative Justice Services
on some community art and
mentoring projects.
“We have already had a couple
of inquiries from parents who
want their young people to have
other avenues to explore other
than tagging.
“We are always open to new
ideas so if you want to have chat
about creating a mural, removing
graffiti, project ideas or to attend
an event, please contact the
team. Together, we can make a
difference.”
Scholarship a step towards ‘dream job’
•From page 1
“If people think they’re not
smart enough or not doing well
enough at school, just make sure
you apply because it’s not about
that. You’ll lose nothing by going
for it.”
Jansen van Rensburg said the
scholarship recognises potential
to make a difference and lead
change and she and her friends
were involved in leadership roles,
mentoring, and working in their
communities during high school.
“We’re all pretty wellrounded.”
Hungerford said she likes the
open-minded approach of the
scholarship.
“I think it focuses not so much
on what you have done, but
what you would do with this
opportunity.”
Te Kakau a Māui scholars
– 164 students this year – are
offered career advice, one-to-one
mentoring from a UC graduate,
and help from UC student
success coach Angus Howat.
Froom, who aims to become
a primary school teacher, said
it’s great the scholars have
dedicated access to Howat who
always makes time and offers
encouragement.
“You can just say, ‘Hey, can
we catch up?’ It’s pretty cool
that you have that backup and
someone there to chat to.”
She has always wanted to
work with children and teaching
is her dream job. She said the
scholarship has helped her
settle into university and make
friends because Te Kakau a Māui
scholars are placed into social
hubs called homebases.
UC acting executive dean of
education Professor Misty Sato
said the scholarships can change
lives.
“The programme is unique
because we are offering
mentoring, support and careercoaching
to our successful
scholars, in addition to covering
tuition fees for a degree.”
It is also innovative, she said,
because it’s encouraging a
wider group of students to see
university as a pathway towards
their goals.
“We’re looking beyond
traditional academic performance
to find students with a more
holistic range of skills. We’re
inviting applications from young
people around the South Island
who want to make a difference,
and we want to empower them to
achieve their goals.”
Model yacht club sail-ebrating
One of world’s oldest
model yacht clubs
celebrates its 125th
anniversary this
weekend. Nick Tolerton
reports
THE CHRISTCHURCH Model
Yacht Club, part of the Hagley
Park scene for 125 years, has
battled plenty of obstacles to stay
afloat.
Issues with water weed,
competition from Canada geese,
and especially the February 22,
2011, earthquake, which drained
Lake Victoria like bathwater
going down a plughole, are
among the difficulties the club
has overcome.
However, at 125 the club will
have much to celebrate at its
jubilee on Saturday. With nearly
100 sailors, the membership
is the highest it has ever been
since a group of enthusiasts
established the club during a
meeting at Warner’s Hotel on
June 17, 1898.
It is the second oldest model
yacht club in the world, after
a London club in Kensington
Gardens, founded in 1876.
It’s a small miracle, though,
that the Christchurch club
got on its feet again after the
earthquake. The big shake
ruptured an unknown tile
drain under the lake bed, the
CHAMPION: Graham Parratt, a former national trailer yacht
champion, has been the skipper to beat at Lake Victoria
for several years.
PHOTOS: RODNEY FORD
water disappeared, and the lake
became a wilderness of mud,
puddles, weed, and rubbish.
Mayor Phil Mauger gets the
credit for putting it on its feet
again – and can probably be sure
of votes from club members. The
contracting firm he had at the
time was engaged to re-establish
the lake, which had to be reexcavated,
lined with bentonite
clay half a metre thick, topped
with a coating of ground glass,
and to repair the wells which
supplied its water.
Before the quake, the club’s
big issue for many decades had
been weed, which sometimes
grew so thickly it made the lake
unusable.
The weed returned after the
quake, along with some algae
in mid-summer, but in about
2015 the lake stabilised and it no
longer even requires spraying for
weed.
As for the Canada geese
(and ducks and ducklings), the
yachties have to compromise and
share the lake. A flock of geese
taking off when winds are light
literally takes the wind out of
their sails.
The biggest change in the
club’s history came in the 1960s
with the introduction of radiocontrolled
yachts, allowing the
operator to steer the yacht and
adjust the mainsail and jib,
which are on the same winch.
Previously skippers used vane
steering, which meant frantic
sprints around the lake to reset
the sails and vane when the yacht
reached the opposite shore.
Many of the club’s members
have been among Canterbury’s
top yachties in a variety of
‘proper’ sailing classes.
The late Graham Mander, a
Canterbury sailing great and
winner of more than a dozen
New Zealand titles in classes
including the P class, R class, X
class, and trailer yachts, adapted
with ease to the challenge of the
radio-controlled boats and was
Thursday June 15 2023 5
big milestone
SUCCESS STORY: Some of the J class skippers line up. The class was
developed at the Christchurch club and is now raced around the world.
Graham Luxon, the
father of National Party
leader Chris Luxon, wellknown
photographer
Euan Sarginson, and
Steve Mander, son of
Olympic sailing champion
Peter Mander, are also
members.
While the club has
many ancient mariners,
women have also made
an impact. Sue Bowie was
the first female member
as a 13-year-old in the
1970s and finished third
in a national junior
championship. Thysje
Arthur has had a long
involvement, and the
question of who cooked
dinner that night was
resolved on race days
when she and husband
Tom crossed tacks.
Anzan Zhang, who
raced big boats in China,
spotted the model yachts
while walking in Hagley
Park, was offered the
chance to sail one, and is
now a keen member.
A wide variety of classes
have been sailed at the
club, but there is special
affection for the J class,
which is now raced in
other centres and even
at some overseas clubs.
Designed by Dave Heanly
based on the lines of the
famous America’s Cup
yacht, Ranger, it has a long
sweeping keel that enables
it to glide through the
weed which fouled yachts
with deeper keels. Very
handily, it also fits fully
rigged in the back of a car.
So far, at least, 365 J
class have been built,
fibreglass hulls from the
same mould, and one
club member, Graeme
Raxworthy, has built or
restored more than 40 J
class.
At one time in the 1960s,
participant numbers at the
club dropped to only six or
seven boats, and the club
looked set to go the same
way as penny farthing
cycle racing which used
to be held around Lake
Victoria when it was just
a swamp. How things
have changed – now the
club, which runs races
on Wednesdays and
Saturdays, looks set to
flourish for many years
yet – a unique sports
institution in the heart of
the city.
A WEEK OF
SUCCESS &
GRADUATIONS
Steve and I recently had a week jammed
packed of proud parent moments. Two
sons graduation within days of each
other, one in Palmerston North and one
in Houston. Many air miles racked up in
five days. You can’t imagine when your
boys are at school that someday they
step off the podium holding a cherished
degree, a decorated piece of paper, that
has taken years of grind, passion and self
motivation to achieve. Makes you feel
super proud for sure, but also reminded
me that they are adult men, ready to set
out and conquer the world with passion,
integrity, hope and kindness.
Our two sons played tennis, nationally
and internationally all through school,
starting at age five. They both won many
age group National competitions and
both represented NZL in Junior Davis
Cup. Early on, Steve and I knew they
would start their university education
in the United States (despite living
across from Canterbury University),
gaining a tennis scholarship to a school
of their choice. Connor started at
the University of California Berkeley,
doing an undergraduate degree in
Sciences. Dylan went to the University of
Minnesota in Minneapolis and pursued
an undergraduate degree in finance and
supply chain management. Both sons
finished their degrees in different places.
Connor graduated first with a Batchelor
of Veterinarian Science from Massey
University. We couldn’t be prouder
or happier than a son has chosen a
career that has given Steve and I so
much purpose, enjoyment and exciting
Connor graduating in Veterinary Science.
challenges. Connor has chosen the
path of Internship, gaining a sought
after place at VSA Surgical Specialists
in Auckland, as his first job. This is a
perfect fit for Connor who has a thirst for
learning and knowledge and may want
to pursue the surgical specialist route.
Eventually oneway his home will be
McMaster & Heap though.
Dylan graduated with a Batchelor of
Arts, majoring in Economics, from
Rice University in Houston. Another
choked up moment when “ Dylan
Oliver McMaster Heap “ was called out
amongst the 800 students graduating.
Rice is a top 15 American College,
so gaining a degree from Rice and
playing on the tennis team is a huge
achievement, requiring perseverance,
full commitment and great work ethic.
Business Analytics and finish his final
year playing tennis. The world awaits
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
• We offer a free measure and quote in the
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
complimentary appraisal of your underfloor
ground moisture barrier needs.
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
Mercedes EQE breathtakingly quick
• By Bob Nettleton
IN THE last three years
Mercedes Benz has amped up its
quest to become a luxury electric
vehicle game changer, with its
efforts being spearheaded by the
EQ range.
Among them is the futuristically
styled and breathtakingly
quick EQE AMG, one of the
hottest-ever Mercedes Benz sedans
priced at a cool $220,000.
Just months after the launch of
the large luxury EQS, the EQE is
the next model series to be based
on architecture Mercedes Benz
developed specifically for its
electric models.
Riding on a slightly shorter
wheelbase than the EQS, with
shorter overhangs and more
recessed flanks, the EQE remains
a substantial high-end luxury
sedan. Interior space exceeds
the comparable ICE (Internal
Combustion Engine) Mercedes-
Benz E-Class, including interior
length (+ 80mm) and front
shoulder room (+ 27mm). The
EQE comfortably accommodates
up to five people even on longer
journeys.
It brings sharp styling and attitude,
along with a level of standard
equipment and refinement to
what is regarded as an all-electric
alternative to the legendary
Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan.
A three-model range is offered
here and put its best foot
forward with the entry level
and attractively priced $132,100
EQE. After more power and
technology? That is offered in
abundance in the $145,000n 350
version featuring Mercedes Benz
4MATIC AWD system. Then
there’s the X-factor $200k plus
AMG 53 4MATIC. All EQE’s are
covered by a five-year unlimited
kilometre warranty and 10 years
or up to 250,000km, whatever
comes first.
The EQE 53 4MATIC+ dual
electric motors generate an epic
460 kW of power and a staggering
950 Nm of torque. Their
combined might hurtles the car
0 to 100 km/h in a mind bending
3.5 seconds – all with a handy
maximum real world all-electric
driving range of 500km. This is
around 90km less electric range
than the other two versions.
The fit and finish of the generously
proportioned passenger
compartment is outstanding,
along with a driving position
that’s close to perfection. Both
front seats are heated and electrically
adjustable, while a panoramic
sliding sunroof lighten
ups your world and senses at the
touch of a button.
On board is the latest generation
of the MBUX multimedia
system, including MBUX
Navigation. A large centrally
mounted LED screen includes a
fingerprint scanner to activate
driver profiles. It’s hard not to
be impressed by the quality
surround sound system, smartphone
integration for Apple and
Android devices.
A smart Driving Assistance
Package includes Active Distance
Assist, Active Brake Assist
with cross-traffic function, Active
Lane Change Assist, Active
Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane,
all making for one highly active
vehicle.
AIRMATIC air suspension
enhanced the test vehicles ride
and all round poise. Rear-axle
steering shortens the turning circle
during cornering and parking,
and delivers better steering
response. Comfort for a serious
high performance sedan is excellent,
and free of the sometimes
abrasive low-speed ride associated
with this type of model.
Handling is right out of the
top draw thanks to a superbly
designed, engineered and tuned
suspension providing prodigious
levels of grip. In fact I felt at
times the test vehicle was ‘super
glued’ to the road surface. With
the lithium-ion battery forming
part of the vehicles floor you
have the ideal low centre of gravity.
This further improves what’s
an already incredibly well balanced
and agile full size luxury
sedan.
KHUZWANE HOLDER
027 634 2643 | khuzwane@homechch.co.nz
What made you want to jump into real estate?
From my previous roles I really enjoy being a
trusted source of information and support for
people as they go about their purchase decisions,
and what better industry to do that in than Real
Estate
Winter is here, do you have a favourite winter
activity or place to visit?
The whole Otago region is beautiful this time of
year as is the West Coast but I'm most happy
anywhere I can enjoy a nice walk during the day
and a roaring fireplace at night.
What was most memorable when you purchased
your first home?
That feeling of getting the keys and knowing that
I was taking my first steps on a path to enjoy a life
I had only imagined for a long time.
What is your favourite Eatery in Christchurch/
Banks Peninsula?
Portershed Cafe and Grater Goods Restaurant
are my top two and of course my local Little
River Cafe!
If you had to choose an alternative career path,
what would it be?
Supercar test driver :D
Who do you idolise and why?
NBA Superstar Lebron James, his whole life story
and professional career till now I think will be
looked back on in history as one of the greatest
examples of sporting and general life
achievement.
You're left alone on a resort island, you can
take one book, one movie and one album,
what are you taking?
Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari , James Camerons
Avatar and Fat Freddys Drop - Based on a True
Story
And finally, what is your greatest achievement
to date?
Not sure about a specific achievement but Im
proud that I challenge myself to try new things
and get out of my comfort zone as much as
possible and for me that is an achievement I can
