radio DJs are gearing up for
a 40-hour broadcast like no other.
From 8pm tomorrow until
11am on Sunday students at the
school, including (above) David

Black, will be stepping up to the
mic for a marathon broadcast
as part of the World Vision 40
Hour Challenge.
The challenge is New
Zealand’s biggest youth
fundraising event.
This year the focus is
on bringing life-changing
clean water to children who
desperately need it, such as
those in Malawi where, every
day, 11 kids under five die from
diseases related to dirty water.

in graffiti
across
the city
THE AMOUNT of graffiti being
removed from structures across
the city has dropped significantly.
From March to May, city
council contractors removed
15,000m 2 of graffiti, compared to
the same period last year when
21,000m 2 had to be cleaned off.
City council graffiti team
leader Kerryn Findlater said the
reduction may
be due to several
factors, including
a collaborative
approach to
preventing graffiti,
the increasing
presence of street
art in the city and
a new volunteering
programme.
“We have introduced the idea of
micro-volunteering, which gives
those who are reporting a chance
to be rewarded each month.
“It was developed after we
noticed that more than 60 per
cent of all graffiti reports came in
via our existing network of 150
volunteers; we wanted to increase
that activity and involve more of
our citizens.”
Findlater said by joining the
friend of the graffiti programme,
people become “micro-volunteers”
and can get monthly insights and
previews of new street art and go
into a draw to win a supermarket
voucher.

Young actors gear up
to shine in Oliver!
RICCARTON HIGH School will
be drawing back the curtains on
its theatre production of Oliver!
next Wednesday.
The school has working on the
production since late last year.
Show director Charlie Grubb
said more than 100 people are
involved, with rehearsals running
up to five times a week.
He described Oliver! as “a
classical musical, ultimately about
kindness”.
Oliver! follows the journey
of Oliver Twist, an orphaned
boy in 19th-century London,
as he navigates a world of
pickpockets, thieves, and
unexpected friendships,
ultimately discovering the power
of resilience, love, and hope in the
face of adversity.
The lead role of Oliver is played
by Year 9 student Albie Moore,
with the supporting roles of
Nancy played by Manisha Munro,
Fagin by Ted Eason, and Bill Sikes
by Jay Poole.

School hall on June 21-14
at 7pm, with a matinee on

Script, film
and edit – all
in 40 hours
STUDENTS FROM Riccarton
High School will take part in a
40-hour filmmaking competition
on the weekend, to raise funds
for the World Vision 40 Hour
Challenge.
Around 16 teams of four-tofive
students will script, film
and edit films, which they will
challenge themselves to complete
during the 40-hour period.
The challenge will kick off at
8pm tomorrow and run until
noon on Sunday.
The students have been
inspired by ‘48Hours’, New
Zealand’s largest filmmaking
competition.
The World Vision 40 Hour
Challenge is New Zealand’s
biggest youth fundraising event.
This year its focus is bringing

“We are wholeheartedly
committed to supporting
the World Vision 40 Hour
Challenge as it enables students
to require new media skills while

“We’re hoping for New Zealand
teenage students to learn some
new media skills, and how to
problem-solve any issues that
they come across while filming,
as good problem-solving skills are
extremely important,” she said.
“This going to be an awesome
experience, especially for aspiring
film-makers. Time management
is going to be key.”
Globally, millions of children
are affected because they don’t
have safe water to drink. One-infive
children worldwide do not
have enough clean water to get
through the day and many have
no option but to walk for hours
each day to find clean water
sources.
World Vision’s goal is to
bring clean water to everyone,
everywhere it works – in more
than 100 countries around the
world – by 2030.

Model yacht club sail-ebration
One of world’s oldest
model yacht clubs
celebrates its 125th
anniversary this
weekend. Nick Tolerton
reports
THE CHRISTCHURCH Model
Yacht Club, part of the Hagley
Park scene for 125 years, has
battled plenty of obstacles to stay
afloat.
Issues with water weed,
competition from Canada geese,
and especially the February 22,
2011, earthquake, which drained
Lake Victoria like bathwater
going down a plughole, are
among the difficulties the club
has overcome.
However, at 125 the club will
have much to celebrate at its
jubilee on Saturday. With nearly
100 sailors, the membership
is the highest it has ever been
since a group of enthusiasts
established the club during a
meeting at Warner’s Hotel on
June 17, 1898.
It is the second oldest model
yacht club in the world, after
a London club in Kensington
Gardens, founded in 1876.
It’s a small miracle, though,
that the Christchurch club
got on its feet again after the
earthquake. The big shake
ruptured an unknown tile
drain under the lake bed, the

champion, has been the skipper to beat at Lake Victoria
for several years.

water disappeared, and the lake
became a wilderness of mud,
puddles, weed, and rubbish.
Mayor Phil Mauger gets the
credit for putting it on its feet
again – and can probably be sure
of votes from club members. The
contracting firm he had at the
time was engaged to re-establish
the lake, which had to be reexcavated,
lined with bentonite
clay half a metre thick, topped
with a coating of ground glass,
and to repair the wells which
supplied its water.
Before the quake, the club’s
big issue for many decades had
been weed, which sometimes
grew so thickly it made the lake
unusable.
The weed returned after the
quake, along with some algae
in mid-summer, but in about
2015 the lake stabilised and it no
longer even requires spraying for
weed.
As for the Canada geese
(and ducks and ducklings), the
yachties have to compromise and
share the lake. A flock of geese
taking off when winds are light
literally takes the wind out of
their sails.
The biggest change in the
club’s history came in the 1960s
with the introduction of radiocontrolled
yachts, allowing the
operator to steer the yacht and
adjust the mainsail and jib,
which are on the same winch.
Previously skippers used vane
steering, which meant frantic
sprints around the lake to reset
the sails and vane when the yacht
reached the opposite shore.
Many of the club’s members
have been among Canterbury’s
top yachties in a variety of
‘proper’ sailing classes.
The late Graham Mander, a
Canterbury sailing great and
winner of more than a dozen
New Zealand titles in classes
including the P class, R class, X
class, and trailer yachts, adapted
with ease to the challenge of the
radio-controlled boats and was
the top competitor for many
years.

A WEEK OF
SUCCESS &
GRADUATIONS

‘Unique sports
institution in the
heart of the city’
Steve and I recently had a week jammed
packed of proud parent moments. Two
sons graduation within days of each
other, one in Palmerston North and one
in Houston. Many air miles racked up in
five days. You can’t imagine when your
boys are at school that someday they
step off the podium holding a cherished
degree, a decorated piece of paper, that
has taken years of grind, passion and self
motivation to achieve. Makes you feel
super proud for sure, but also reminded
me that they are adult men, ready to set
out and conquer the world with passion,
integrity, hope and kindness.
Our two sons played tennis, nationally
and internationally all through school,
starting at age five. They both won many
age group National competitions and
both represented NZL in Junior Davis
Cup. Early on, Steve and I knew they
would start their university education
in the United States (despite living
across from Canterbury University),
gaining a tennis scholarship to a school
of their choice. Connor started at
the University of California Berkeley,
doing an undergraduate degree in
Sciences. Dylan went to the University of
Minnesota in Minneapolis and pursued
an undergraduate degree in finance and
supply chain management. Both sons
finished their degrees in different places.
Connor graduated first with a Batchelor
of Veterinarian Science from Massey
University. We couldn’t be prouder
or happier than a son has chosen a
career that has given Steve and I so
much purpose, enjoyment and exciting
Connor graduating in Veterinary Science.
Dylan graduating from Rice in Houston
challenges. Connor has chosen the
path of Internship, gaining a sought
after place at VSA Surgical Specialists
in Auckland, as his first job. This is a
perfect fit for Connor who has a thirst for
learning and knowledge and may want
to pursue the surgical specialist route.
Eventually oneway his home will be
McMaster & Heap though.
Dylan graduated with a Batchelor of
Arts, majoring in Economics, from
Rice University in Houston. Another
choked up moment when “ Dylan
Oliver McMaster Heap “ was called out
amongst the 800 students graduating.
Rice is a top 15 American College,
so gaining a degree from Rice and
playing on the tennis team is a huge
achievement, requiring perseverance,
full commitment and great work ethic.
Dylan is now moving to Elon University
in North Carolina to do a Masters in
Business Analytics and finish his final
year playing tennis. The world awaits
Dylan.
Not my usual patient case study article
but I wanted to share a little of my
family. I have been writing articles for 24
years now. When we bought McMaster
& Heap Vets in 1999, Connor was two
years old, Dylan and Isaac not born yet.
Our boys have grown up with parents
devoted to helping people and their
pets and the business is a part of who
they all are. They are all very proud of
the work Steve and I do - you never
know, they all may play a part in the
MMH family business oneway.

women have also made
an impact. Sue Bowie was
the first female member
as a 13-year-old in the
1970s and finished third
in a national junior
championship. Thysje

involvement, and the
question of who cooked
dinner that night was
resolved on race days
when she and husband
Tom crossed tacks.

as effective or as efficient.
It truly is a team effort,”
Findlater said.
The graffiti team has
also completed recent
beautification projects
as part of its ‘What’s
Cool About Your School’
initiative.
Findlater said the
project offers the chance
for schools to ‘adopt’ a
cabinet and showcase
their schools with a mural
on it to increase pride
and ownership in their

spotted the model yachts
while walking in Hagley
Park, was offered the
chance to sail one, and is
now a keen member.
A wide variety of classes
have been sailed at the
club, but there is special
affection for the J class,
which is now raced in
other centres and even
at some overseas clubs.
Designed by Dave Heanly
based on the lines of the
famous America’s Cup
yacht, Ranger, it has a long
sweeping keel that enables
it to glide through the
weed which fouled yachts
with deeper keels. Very
handily, it also fits fully
rigged in the back of a car.
So far, at least, 365 J
class have been built,
community.
They have also begun
working with Restorative
Justice Services on some
community art and
mentoring projects.
“We have already had a
couple of inquiries from
parents who want their
young people to have other
fibreglass hulls from the
same mould, and one
club member, Graeme
Raxworthy, has built or
restored more than 40 J
class.
At one time in the
1960s, participant
numbers at the club
dropped to only six or
seven boats, and the club
looked set to go the same
way as penny farthing
cycle racing which used
to be held around Lake
Victoria when it was just a
swamp.
How things have
changed – now the
club, which runs races
on Wednesdays and
Saturdays, looks set to
flourish for many years
yet – a unique sports
institution in the heart of
the city.

Great baking delights without gluten
A need
to make
sure her
daughter,
diagnosed
with
coeliac
disease,
did not miss out on the
joys of eating led Cherie
Lyden to delve into the
world of gluten-free
cooking and baking.
When she began to investigate
what gluten-free baking was
available, Lyden was shocked to
find gluten-free products were
hard to find and lacking in taste.
Gluten-free recipes were also hitand-miss.
“So I experimented, tested and
trialled various options until I
had developed food that I was
happy with and proud to have
cooked.”
This led to the opening of the
Wholegreen Bakery in Sydney,
and spreading the word around
the gluten-free community.
In her book, Lyden includes a
chapter on her kitchen essentials
and the flour blends she uses to
bake and cook with. She makes
up her own mix of brown rice
flour, potato starch, cornflour
and xanthan gum, which she
finds to be more consistent for
baking than shop-bought blends.
“I like to use brown rice flour
here as it’s more wholesome and
results in moister baked products
than white rice flour.”
The book is divided into sweet,
savoury and bread chapters.
Lemon and coconut cake
Serves 8
Ingredients
⅔ cup (80g) coconut flour
1 cup (100g) almond meal
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
6 eggs, at room temperature
1⅓ cups (295g) caster
(superfine) sugar
1⅓ cups (330ml) sunflower oil
1 tsp vanilla paste
Zest and juice of 2 lemons,
plus juice of 1 extra lemon for
brushing
Toasted coconut flakes
Lemon glaze:
2 cups (250g) gluten-free icing
(confectioners’) sugar, sifted
¼ cup (60ml) lemon juice
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon,
plus extra strands of zest to
decorate
Directions
Preheat the oven to 170 de gC
(150 deg C fan-forced) with the
oven rack positioned in the middle
of the oven.
Grease a 20cm round springform
cake tin and line the base
and sides with baking paper.
Sift the coconut flour, almond
meal, baking powder and cinnamon
into a bowl and whisk
together thoroughly.
Using a stand mixer with the
whisk attachment, or in a large
bowl with a hand mixer, whisk
the eggs and sugar together on
high speed until pale and fluffy.
Slowly add the oil and vanilla
and continue to whisk for 30
seconds more.
Using the paddle attachment
on low speed, add the sifted dry
ingredients and fold in until
everything is mixed together
thoroughly, then add the zest
and juice of two lemons and mix
well.
Pour the batter into the prepared
tin and smooth the top
with the back of a spoon.
Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, rotating
roughly halfway through
for even cooking, until the cake
is dark golden, a skewer inserted
into the centre of the loaf comes
out clean, or the cake springs
back when you press down gently
on the top with two fingers.
Remove the cake from the
oven and brush the top with
lemon juice. Leave to cool completely
in the tin before releasing
the spring, removing the sides
and peeling away any baking
paper as necessary. Remove the
cake tin base by sliding the cake
on to a serving plate.
Make the lemon glaze by mixing
the icing sugar, lemon juice
and lemon zest together in a
bowl until smooth.
Pour the icing over the top of
the cake then use a flat-bladed
spatula to quickly smooth the
glaze out so it gently tips over the
sides to create a drip effect.
Decorate with toasted coconut
flakes and a little lemon zest. If
you want the icing to set (which
makes it easier to slice), place the
cake in the fridge for 10 minutes
before slicing.

Mercedes Benz has amped up its
quest to become a luxury electric
vehicle game changer, with its
efforts being spearheaded by the
EQ range.
Among them is the futuristically
styled and breathtakingly
quick EQE AMG, one of the
hottest-ever Mercedes Benz sedans
priced at a cool $220,000.
Just months after the launch of
the large luxury EQS, the EQE is
the next model series to be based
