is set to transform the Avon 

Heathcote Estuary edge. 

The new landscaping plan 

released last week features a 

3m-wide walking and cycling 

track from South New Brighton 

Park to the end of Southshore 

spit, native 

planting, a 

nature play area, 

and new ramps 

and jetties. 

The plan aims 

to complement 

the programme 

to reduce coastal 

erosion and David 

flooding in Little 

Southshore and South New 

Brighton. 

Said city council red zone 

manager David Little: “It’s taken 

us longer than we’d like to get 

to this point, but we now have 

a landscape plan we’d like to 

share with the community to 

get feedback on some of the 

things we’ve proposed.” 

The city council hopes to start 

some work by March next year, 

but most of it was not planned 

until 2025. 

Rock walls and cobble 

beaches will also help to prevent 

erosion.

Pūkeko Centre officially opens 

AFTER YEARS of planning, 

the multi-use hall at the Pūkeko 

Centre in Parklands has been 

officially opened. 

Last Thursday, Mayor Phil 

Mauger, together with kaumātua 

Brian Heemi, cut the ribbon. 

Pūkeko Centre committee 

member Andrew Weastell said 

the sports hall was “already 

popular with recreational 

groups and sports groups 

wanting additional space and 

well utilised by nearby Parkview 

Primary School for assemblies 

and events”. 

Andrew noted the project 

was delivered “on time and on 

budget”, thanks to a dedicated 

team and generous funders, 

including funding from the 

city council to get the hall over 

the line after Coastal Ward 

councillor Celeste Donovan 

backed it. 

Donovan said impetus for the 

project came from the Parklands 

Bowls and Parklands Rugby 

Club, which, rendered homeless 

by earthquake damage, joined 

forces to explore building a 

shared clubroom. 

The Pūkeko Centre now 

provides clubrooms for the 

two founding partner clubs, in 

addition to a range of indoor 

and outdoor spaces for other 

community and sports groups. 

Further sponsorship will be 

required to realise the full vision

saltmarsh, sea meadow, sea grass, 

as well as at-risk coastal bird 

population, while in South New 

Brighton Park middens (archaeological 

sites) have been identified 

close to the estuary edge. 

“We’re at a place now where this 

has all been worked through and 

we’ve mitigated risk to local flora 

and fauna. We’re also retaining as 

many significant trees and bushes 

as possible,” he said.

Spreadsheet of rugby results 

turns into major project

has led to a treasure 

trove of sporting 

history at Shirley 

Boys’ High School.

WHEN CARLOS Colville 

made his debut for Shirley Boys’ 

High’s 1st XV in the opening 

match of the season against 

John McGlashan College, he 

unknowingly made history for 

the school. 

Shortly after the match in 

April, teacher Michael Skinner 

discovered Colville was the 

1000th player to take the field for 

SBHS’s 1st XV. 

Skinner started his research 

after the trip to Oamaru to play 

John McGlashan when current 

coaches Kris Vine and Thomas 

Houghton asked about the 

history of the team. Skinner, 

a teacher at SBHS since 2002, 

admitted he didn’t know much 

about it to start with. 

“I coached the 1st XV years 

ago, and help out now and then,” 

he said. 

“But I didn’t know much of the 

history myself, so I started a bit 

of research not only to educate 

the boys but tell our history to 

our community.” 

What started as a spreadsheet 

of results turned into a bigger 

project for Skinner, who counted 

up the total number of the 

school’s 1st XV players and 

found that Colville had became 

the 1000th in the team’s first 

game of the season. 

“It was a bit of a shame we 

missed that opportunity, but 

we celebrated that at the start of 

the Miles Toyota Premiership 

season,” he said. 

Even the school’s 17 staff 

members who played for the 1st 

XV were wanting to know their 

player numbers, Skinner added. 

The historical project has 

now gotten larger than Skinner 

initially thought, with a mini

featuring a number of old boys 

such as current Crusaders Tom 

Christie (below) and Brodie 

McAlister, Black Ferns assistant 

coach Tony Christie, and former 

All Black Ryan Crotty. 

“What I’m trying to do is to 

make a 20 minute presentation 

of the history with images and 

clips of them,” he said. 

“It’s something for next year 

and the future.” 

Although it’s still in the 

works, Skinner has interviewed 

several former players so far, and 

believes their memories will be 

integral to the school’s rugby 

culture. 

“I talked to James Daniels, 

who was part of the 1972 team 

and is a presenter for Newstalk 

ZB.” 

“I tried not to laugh at some of 

his memories on camera because 

they were so entertaining,” he 

said. 

Skinner has also interviewed 

Steve Crotty, known as being the 

father of All Black Ryan, but is 

an old boy himself who coached 

alongside Skinner in the mid 

2000s. 

“He got a bit of a tear to his 

eye going back to the memory 

of coaching his sons Ryan and 

Luke,” Skinner said. 

“It was obviously a real proud 

moment with his wife and 

daughter on the sidelines.” 

The geography teacher 

hopes to add to his project 

with scanned photo 

archives scattered around 

the school’s new Travis Rd site 

to educate students’ on their 

local history. 

Meanwhile, Shirley’s 1st XV 

continued their 2023 Miles 

Toyota Premiership campaign 

by hosting defending champions 

Nelson College at SBHS 

yesterday. 

Some of Michael Skinner’s 

research into the past years of 

SBHS rugby: 

The inaugural Shirley 1st XV 

team played 10 games against St 

Bede’s College, Christ’s College, 

Christchurch Boys’ High, Papanui 

High and Cashmere High in 1959 

just two years after the school was 

founded. 

It was noted in the school magazine 

that the “team had a good year 

despite the greater age and weight 

of opposing teams” – as Shirley did 

not having any 7th formers (year 

13s) until 1961. The 1960 1st XV 

was captained by Peter Drewery 

(SBHS 1st XV #1) and coached by 

John Mullins. 

Eight years later, Shirley won 

their first secondary schools 1st XV 

Championship in 1968- captained 

by Howard Anderson (#94). 

In 1972, Shirley took out the title 

as the top Christchurch school rugby 

team for the second time. This 

team featured Steve Scott (#172) at 

second five-eight, who gained the 

honour of being Shirley’s first All 

Black representative. 

Craig Green (#251) was a member 

of the 1976-78 teams. He later 

became the school’s second All 

Black representative - a winger for 

the 1987 rugby world cup winning 

team, playing the final in front of 

over 48,000 people. 

The first golden era of Shirley 

rugby is considered be from 1986 

to 1989. The 1986 season saw the 

team placed fourth while they 

placed second in both 1987 and 

1988. In 1989, Shirley gained the 

Canterbury Rugby 1st XV title 

for the third time in the school’s 

history. 

Former Crusaders Graeme Jack 

(#407) and Matt Sexton (#403) 

played through the 1986-1988 

seasons, while Gary Stead (#423) 

also featured in the 1988 and 1989 

teams. Gary later gained recognition 

as a Black Cap opening batsman 

and head coach.

We’ve received Government funding for a range of 

projects, including intersection safety upgrades, 

pedestrian improvements, upgrading 

bus stops, and better cycle connections.

What we propose and need your feedback on 

Way safer for Linwood 

Safer cycling 

We’re planning a new cycle lane on Smith 

Street so people can cycle safely to Te 

Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool and Te Waka 

Unua School on Ferry Road. 

We’re also making it safer for students to 

bike to Te Aratai College with a new cycle 

link along Aldwins Road and Ensors Road. 

Bus stop and shelter 

improvements 

We’re making it way easier to take the 

bus by upgrading several stops with new 

shelters, relocating and installing new 

bus stops throughout Linwood. 

Safer intersections 

We know that 55% of serious crashes 

happen at intersections. Slowing traffic 

down using features such as safe speed 

platforms reduces both the number and 

severity of crashes. It also means drivers 

can stop in time if they need to. 

To make it safer for everyone, we plan 

to upgrade the two busy intersections 

of Aldwins/Ensors/Ferry and Aldwins/ 

Buckleys/Linwood. These safety 

improvements include the installation 

of safe speed platforms to slow people 

down as they enter an intersection. If 

someone makes a mistake, the likelihood 

or severity of a crash is reduced. 

Safer crossings and 

pedestrian improvements 

To make it safer to get to Te Pou Toetoe: 

Linwood Pool, a new raised pedestrian 

crossing and traffic calming will be 

installed on Smith Street. 

We’re also proposing pedestrian 

improvements at several locations in 

Linwood. Features include pedestrian 

refuge islands, enhancing existing 

pedestrian crossings and traffic calming 

such as speed humps 

and narrowing 

the road at 

intersections. 

Way safer cycling for Richmond 

We’re making it easier and safer for people to cycle in Richmond. We’ve developed 

a route that will connect cyclists from the north to the south of Richmond. 

Way safer intersections for Bromley 

We’re proposing to make several Bromley intersections and roads safer. Safety 

improvements we’re proposing include narrowing intersections, safe speed 

platforms, traffic calming and pedestrian safety. 

Other safety 

improvements 

We’re also making it safer around 

schools and neighbourhood streets 

by lowering the speed. These planned 

changes were consulted on in 2022 

and the Council will make a decision 

on these in July 2023.

New look on life after Outward Bound 

LAST MONTH, Josh Rae laced 

up his boots and ventured to 

Anakiwa in the Marlborough 

Sounds to attend an Outward 

Bound Youth Activate course, 

an eight-day adapted course 

for young people with physical 

disabilities. 

The Mairehau resident is an 

active teenager who lives with 

cerebral palsy. He said being on 

the course and away from the 

stresses of everyday life in the 

city gave him the opportunity for 

self-reflection. 

“It was the perfect place to find 

your inner peace – it was serene, 

calm and quiet. I took time for 

myself and as a result, now have 

a different outlook on life,” Josh 

said. 

“Nowhere else but Outward 

Bound can you get that 

experience – you can’t do it at 

home. I loved being outdoors, 

away from commitments, school 

and tech.” 

Outward Bound has offered 

adapted courses for the past four 

decades. Over the past few years, 

the adapted course programme 

has expanded to include the 

Activate course for people aged 

18+ years, the Youth Activate 

course for 16–18 year-olds and 

the Activate Leaps and Bounds 

for 13-15 year-olds, who attend 

with a parent or caregiver. 

“We believe that there is more 

in everyone,” says Outward 

Bound diversity and inclusion 

partner Leonie King. 

“By helping people understand 

their full potential we can help 

make our communities and the 

world a better place. 

“The feedback from our 

activate courses is phenomenal. 

“We see participants of all 

ages and abilities growing in 

confidence in their physical 

capabilities and growing their 

resilience and interpersonal

Bound provided physical 

and mental growth, with 

challenges including a tree 

canopy traverse. 

“Outward Bound is as much 

an inward journey as an outward 

journey.” 

While Josh is a keen kayaker 

and footballer and many of the 

physical aspects of the course 

were doable for him, he found 

traversing the tree canopy on 

ropes challenging, overcoming 

his fears with the help of 

encouraging from his instructor. 

The Papanui High student 

also made some personal 

discoveries over the eight days he 

was away. 

“I was really proud of myself 

doing things that challenged me 

physically, but I also discovered 

that I am a better leader than I 

ever thought I was. 

“Usually I hang back when 

I’m in a group situation, but 

during the course when I was 

told to lead, I did it and was 

good. The skills I learned will 

help with my role in the school 

leadership team and also with 

the volunteering I do for St John 

Youth.” 

King said Josh’s huria watch 

(group) were “amazing young 

people” who came together from 

all corners of the country to form 

a tight-knit watch. 

“They departed Outward 

Bound standing taller, feeling 

prouder and armed with new, 

strong friendships. From when 

they arrived to when they left, 

they showed a strengthened 

belief that nothing can stop them 

from doing anything they set 

their minds to.”

recommend anyone to go to 

Outward Bound. It was different 

to what I expected, but in a 

good way.”
