Cashmere comes up
trumps in the mud
• By Jaime Cunningham
A DEFENSIVE battle in
mudbath conditions at
Cashmere High saw the school’s
combined 1st XV record their
first win of the season in the
Miles Toyota Championship.
Cashmere High and Whānau
Tahi’s combined team managed
to hold onto a narrow lead
in the dying minutes of the
game against Roncalli College
(Timaru) on Saturday, winning
their closest match of the season
13-10.
Cashmere will be looking to
continue momentum with a
second win against Horomaka
combined this weekend – a local
derby between the two newest
sides to the competition.
Both Cashmere and Horomaka
have been struggling in
the first four games of the new
10-team competition, losing by
more than 30 points consistently.
Cashmere coach and director
of rugby Michael Jones said the
season has been very “challenging”
for his side.
“The first month of the
competition has been a big
learning curve for the boys,
but they have continued to be
hungry to get better individually
and as a team,” he said.
Crime
planned
• By Heidi Slade
A HEATHCOTE Valley resident
wants to start another community
patrol to curb the suburb’s rising
crime rate.
About 50 residents turned out
at a meeting with police, Fire
and Emergency New Zealand,
Neighbourhood Support and the
Christchurch South Community
Patrol last week to discuss concerns
around safety and security.
It was organised
after Jason
Marsden took
his concerns
about crime to
the Heathcote
Valley Residents
Association.
Marsden said
he also raised
the idea of a
community
watch to patrol Heathcote Valley.
“For me, personally, the
(Christchurch South Community
Patrol) have got a massive area to
cover,” he said.
The patrol area ranges from the
Halswell Quarry to Ferrymead.
“People [at the meeting] were
interested in what to do to keep
their community safe.”
Marsden moved to the area
last year from the Faringdon
subdivision in Rolleston, where
he was involved in a community
watch group. • Turn to page 3
Push to reduce crime
• From page 1
He said the watch was started
after building equipment
was stolen from a site in the
subdivision. The developer
sponsored the group and it was
then able to buy vests, torches,
radios, signage for their vehicles
and lights.
“The crime went down. It’s a
deterrent for criminals to move
on and shop somewhere else,”
Marsden said.
Watch members would call
police when they saw a crime
being committed or something
suspicious. Marsden said the
watch would also take notes or
record what was happening if
they could.
“Basically, you see something
said.
To get the community watch
up and running, it would need
sponsorship to pay for equipment.
The group would aim to form
a “very good” relationship with
police.
Marsden said the Rolleston
watch had cell phone numbers
for police so watch members
didn’t always have to call 111.
“They (police) responded
to our urgent calls within 15
minutes.”
But Sergeant Anna Partridge
encouraged residents to join the
established community patrol
instead.
“We would encourage people
community
meeting, to
collectively
tackle crime
in their area.
to utilise (the) community patrol,”
she said.
Partridge said patrol volunteers
are trained and log on
when they start a shift so police
know where they are.
She said if people joined the
existing community patrol it
would have a more effective
presence in the area.
But Marsden said the community
watch would only operate
in the Heathcote Valley area,
while community patrol members
cover the wider Christchurch
South area.
“The community watch,
for me, is a way of helping
out. It’s not spread out, you’ve
got less ground to cover,” he
said.
Much-anticipated
clash expected
• From page 1
However, it was Cashmere’s
resilience which won them the
game, after they led 10-5 at
halftime.
“We were defending our line
for probably 20 minutes when
they were attacking in the second
half,” Jones, who is also the
school’s sports director, said.
Last year, the Miles Toyota
Championship consisted of the
top 14 first XV schools in the
South Island. Canterbury Rugby
cut four teams from the premier
grade, and renamed it the Miles
Toyota Premiership. The championship
became a competition for
both first and second XVs.
Jones is expecting a close
match against Horomaka combined.
Horomaka, coached by former
Crusader Robbie Fruean, has
also been struggling for wins in
their first season of school rugby.
Said Jones: “They’re in the
same boat as us, so it will hopefully
be a close game.”
Unlike Cashmere, Horomaka
are yet to record a win in their
first five matches, but lost 10-3 to
Roncalli College in their opening
game.
Volunteer work pays off
IT’S THE QUIET moments
in the afterglow of a hard day’s
work that volunteer Mick
Ingram enjoys the most.
“Sitting on the bank of the
Ōpāwaho Heathcote, watching
the birds come and go and
finding rare plants as the health
of the river returns – that’s the
highlight for me,” he said.
It’s National Volunteer Week
– Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu and
the focus is on honouring the
collective energies and respect
of volunteers around New
Zealand.
Volunteers contribute
about 598,000 hours a year in
Christchurch and on Banks
Peninsula, giving their time to
make the district a better place
to be.
Ingram has been working
with the city council for the last
eight years.
Over that time he has worked
tirelessly restoring Kennaway
River Reserve along the right
bank of the Heathcote near its
Woolston loop.
“This has involved removing
boxthorn, gorse and broom,
then re-vegetating the riparian
zones and surrounding area
with suitable native plants,”
Ingram said.
He can also be found
working on a lizard sanctuary
in conjunction with North
Canterbury Forest & Bird
and the city council to create
a habitat for native skinks.
“I work with a small group
of regular volunteers on
Kennaway River Reserve, there
are between three and eight of
us,” he said.
“Plus a local business and
local adventure therapy have
helped out with half days.”
It can be hard work. Ingram
said he’s spent “many, many
hours” at the end of a spade or
planting seedlings – but it is
worth it.
“The re-vegetation has
created areas where public can
access and follow a river-side
trail. During the lockdowns
many family bubbles were able
to walk and enjoy these special
urban ecological areas, and
they are continuing to do so! It
is great to see.”
But Ingram said he can’t do it
all alone.
“There are two other key
volunteers that have assisted
to make things happen at
the Kennaway River Reserve
and they are Bruce Stanton
and Ian McClymont. And, of
course, various (city council)
community and park rangers.
“It takes a team effort to get
things done.”
Would he recommend others
spend some time volunteering?
“Yes, because this has helped
better the city by rebuilding
communities in earthquake
recovery. It creates a sense of
contributing to the area you
live in.”
Way safer cycling
We’re making it easier and safer
for people to cycle.
We’ve received Government funding to improve
cycling connections to link neighbourhoods,
schools, work, shops and existing cycle routes.
We’re also improving pedestrian safety
with a raised pedestrian crossing and
signalised crossings.
Here’s some of what’s proposed
RI
Barrington
We’re proposing a route along Simeon
Street to improve connections to the
Little River Link cycleway that runs
alongside the Southern Motorway,
Quarryman’s Trail and Barrington
Shopping Centre.
Aidanfield
We’re proposing a sealed shared path
through Nash Reserve to connect
the Little River Link cycleway to Date
Crescent, via the Southern Motorway
Heathcote River underpass.
We’re also proposing to improve
cycling connections around Ngā Puna
Wai by creating a sealed shared path
that connects to Wigram Road and
the Little River Link cycleway via the
Hayton Road underpass.

Westmorland
We’re proposing a dedicated
cycleway along both sides of
Cashmere Road, between Oderings
and Hoon Hay Road. From Oderings
to Penruddock Rise, we are
investigating installing a shared
path cycleway.
To improve pedestrian safety,
we propose to install pedestrian
crossings with safe speed platforms
at the intersections of Cashmere
Road and Penruddock Rise, and
Cashmere Road and Opihi Street.
Safe speed platforms help to lower
speed at the approach to the
intersection so drivers can stop in
time if they need to.
We’re also proposing a pedestrian
crossing with a safe speed platform
outside Oderings Garden Centre.
Plan to transform estuary edge
A $12.5 million redevelopment
coastal erosion and flooding
in Southshore and South New
Brighton.
Said city council red zone
manager David Little: “It’s taken
us longer than we’d like to get
to this point, but we now have
SUCCESS DURING the past
eight months could see Lyttelton
Port Company’s predator control
programme expand to cover two
more sites – if it can get some
help from the public.
The programme has been
running 40 traps across the
company’s Port Saddle and
Battery Point sites.
Environmental advisor
Charlotte Jones said it could
expand over Gollans Bay Quarry
and LPC’s land near Sumner Rd.
She said the programme uses a
variety of different traps.
a landscape plan we’d like to
share with the community to get
feedback on some of the things
we’ve proposed.”
The city council hopes to start
some work by March next year,
but most of it was not planned
until 2025.
Rock walls and cobble beaches
will also help to prevent erosion.
“It will mean the project is
not only an important piece of
infrastructure for the community,
but also an attractive area for
residents and visitors to enjoy,”
Little said.
“The project has experienced a
series of delays due to consenting
challenges. Ecological mapping of
Community help with predator control sought
Charlotte
Jones
“We’ve seen
quite interesting
results,” said
Jones.
She said 15
possums had been
trapped, mainly
at the Port Saddle
site.
“The primary
impact of possums around
Lyttelton Harbour is the damage
they do to vegetation. Across
New Zealand, they eat around
21,000 tonnes of vegetation every
night,” she said.
“In addition to browsing,
possums are known to predate
Southshore identified areas where
the design encroached upon
existing saltmarsh, sea meadow,
sea grass, as well as at-risk coastal
bird population, while in South
New Brighton Park middens
(archaeological sites) have been
identified close to the estuary
edge.
“We’re at a place now where this
has all been worked through and
we’ve mitigated risk to local flora
and fauna. We’re also retaining as
many significant trees and bushes
as possible,” he said.
•To view the plan and
on birds and nests when the
opportunity arises, which could
impact the establishment of
native bird populations around
the harbour.”
A “surprising” number of
weasels have also been found,
between January and May.
“We have caught three weasels
since the trapping started.
Whilst this does not sound like
many, weasels are only found in
low densities in New Zealand
habitats and are the rarest of the
three mustelid species we have in
New Zealand.”
Jones said weasels are
“notorious predators” and
predate on prey much larger
than themselves.
“They predate on native birds
and lizards, impacting the ability
for populations to establish
around the harbour.
“Given there are lizard and
gecko populations on LPC land,
it is important that weasels
and the other mustelids are
controlled,” she said.
Jones said it would be hard to
predict how many more weasels
the programme might find, but
she is interested to see if seasonal
changes effect the trend.
But, to expand the
programme, LPC would need
the community’s help.
“The community involvement
would be at the Port Saddle
site as it is publicly accessible
and would involve volunteers
checking, clearing and rebaiting
traps.
“We are hoping to get this
under way in the next couple of
months,” Jones said.
By the community doing what
it can at more accessible sites like
Port Saddle, the LPC team could
shift focus to less accessible
areas.
“It’s important. There’s so
much work in this space being
done,” Jones said.
