There’s never a good time of year to start to have trouble with your boiler –
Christmas probably has to be the worse.
That was when Sarah Scholey found the Meadowhead property she shares
with her partner had no hot water, thanks to its failing 13-year-old boiler.
Sarah had some cover for the appliance but found her problem was not on
the priority list for repairs during the busiest period of the year. Frustrated, she
cancelled and decided to give 1st Call Gas a try after flicking through the
pages of Dronfield Eye’s sister publication, Active8, and reading testimonials
from highly satisfied customers in the area.
An engineer from 1st Call Gas began by fitting a diverter valve in an attempt
to extend the existing boiler’s life but this was not successful, and so it was
decided a new Ideal boiler was the only solution.
The team were able to go out a few days later to Meadowhead to do the
installation - a straightforward replacement in the same cupboard - and Sarah
was shown how to operate the easy to use thermostat. Everything was done
and dusted within a single day.
Sarah had enquired about a replacement for one of the home’s radiators
before the new boiler was fitted but was advised to wait to see how it would
perform once the job was done - and it’s now heating up perfectly!
Sarah said: “It’s wonderful to be able to
have a hot shower again and not have to
go to my sister’s!

Coun Susan Burkitt and her consort, husband Keith, were
on duty at the re-arranged Dronfield 10k and Fun Run
T
HE new Mayor of Dronfield, Coun Susan Burkitt, has
described the role as a “privilege and an honour”.
Coun Burkitt grew up in Greenhill and made her home in
Dronfield in 1977.
She has had a varied working life, including running local
businesses, and spent over a decade as a volunteer at both
Ashgate Hospice and the charity’s Dronfield shop.
She is married to Keith, well known in the area as a
saxophonist, who becomes consort. Coun Burkitt has two
children, a stepson, and four grandchildren.
She first stood for election to Dronfield Town Council in 2019 as
Conservative candidate for Dronfield North.
She said: “I was supposed to be a candidate on paper only but,
when I won, I thought about it and decided that if people had
gone out and put a cross against my name, then perhaps I could
give something back.
“I like helping people and that’s what I’ve tried to do as a
councillor. I think people are important and if I can help, I do my
best to do so.”
Coun Burkitt was re-elected on 5th May, this time standing in
the Coal Aston ward where she and Keith now live.
Coun Burkitt said she is greatly looking forward to her new role,
although the appointment hasn’t quite sunk in yet!
“It is a privilege and an honour that my colleagues nominated
me to represent Dronfield.
“My children can’t believe it and say who would have thought
when we were growing up that mum would go on to become
Mayor of Dronfield,” she added.

WOULD like to start my
first column for Dronfield
Eye by introducing myself.
I have lived in Dronfield for
the past 45 years, am
married and have raised
children Angela, David and
Gavin here.
For the past year, I have been
Deputy Mayor, representing Dronfield on a number of
occasions including during the Queen Elizabeth II’s historic
Platinum Jubilee celebrations last summer and, sadly, the
passing of our Queen only a few months later.
This year I had the honour of being elected Town Mayor and
during my term of office I am looking forward to meeting as
many residents, both adults and children, as I possibly can.
My first duty was to attend the Dronfield 10k and Fun Run
held on the 21st May. As you may remember, this had been
originally scheduled for March but was cancelled due to snow.
What a difference two months makes. This time we had a
glorious sunny day, which was good for all who attended but
maybe not so much for some runners, especially the firefighter
who ran the race in full kit.
I had the privilege of starting both races and then handing
out medals to the participants as they finished their respective
races, together with our new Deputy Mayor, Coun Pam Jones.
I also presented individual awards to the winners of all the
different categories.
The event was wonderfully organised and congratulations
need to be given to all those involved for their hard work. I met
and spoke to many lovely people but I cannot let it pass
without saying a big thank you to the Venture Scouts who
looked after us throughout the morning.
I look forward to keeping you all updated on future events.

Two into one
A
PROPERTY at Greenhill is the latest to benefit from a
beautiful new bathroom courtesy of the experts at H2O
Bathroom Solutions.
Customer David Waller, who shares the home with his wife,
wanted the existing bathroom and separate toilet combined into
one convenient, modern space.
However, the couple wanted to
engage the services of a
company which would manage
the entire project and make the
transformation as easy and
seamless as possible.
H2O Bathroom Solutions fitted
the bill and had the added
advantage of having a fantastic
local showroom – on
Chesterfield Road, at
Woodseats.
Once the clients were happy
with the design and had chosen
their products, the fitters moved
in to knock down the dividing
wall, and strip out the old
fixtures and fittings.
Everything was taken away to
make way for the new
bathroom, which includes a
walk-in shower complete with
handy seat for convenience
and a grab handle for added
safety.
The bulk of the project was
finished in time for the
Christmas holiday and the
transformation took just ten
days from start to finish.
David said: “The new bathroom is nice and much bigger. Before, we had
pipework running around the walls, now it’s under the floor so things
look far superior and are easier to clean.”
“We’re very satisfied with the finished job - H2O have been very good
indeed,” added David.

Keyboard ‘cowards’ criticised
Anti-social media posts have seen ‘baseless
slurs and viscious slander’ directed at
local councillors. Mike Firth reports
A
FORMER councillor who lost his seat at May’s local
elections has slammed anonymous people who make
false and prejudicial online accusations about Dronfield
Town Council and its members.
Martin Hanrahan said that being a member of the local authority
since 2019, he had found people with many relevant skills,
talents, expertise, wisdom, judgement and a genuine affection for
Dronfield, with a willingness to work for the best interests of the
residents.
However, he told May’s Town Council meeting that Dronfield
unfortunately also has “a very small minority of ill-informed -
maybe wilfully ill-informed - craven cowards who hide behind a
curtain of anonymity.”
He said: “We have people who parade their vitriol hatred on
social media with vile slurs and invective false accusations. And,
through the prism of their prejudice, they see good things being
done and choose to label them as the opposite.
“Everybody here is out in the open, but some people choose to
make their comments hiding behind a keyboard.
“The people I’ve come to know are honest, open, decent, fair,
trustworthy and principled. The dignified, noble and brave
manner in which those who were so grievously maligned by
baseless slurs and viscious slander, and the way they conducted
themselves, was laudable and commendable
“There is no place for such appalling hate. It’s not the CIA, it’s
not the FSB, it’s not Putin invading Ukraine. It’s properties, parks,
events - it’s community.
“Such hatred should be discouraged by all. The tone must be
set in this forum where individuals should be afforded respect
and civility.”
Martin’s comments were applauded by Town Council members.
HREE runners crossed the
Dronfield 10k finish line to
raise more than £2,000 for the
Fragile X Society.
Dronfield couple James and Sheridan
Woodward’s three-year-old son, Jude,
was diagnosed with the condition in
February 2022.
Fragile X syndrome is a genetic
condition affecting around one in
4,000 males and one in 6,000 females.
It can cause a wide range of learning
difficulties, as well as social, language,
attentional, emotional and behavioural
problems. FXS as it is known, is the
most common inherited cause of
learning disability.
James’ brother-in-law Louis Hands
and best friend, Dave Rodgers, were
pleased to be able to boost the
charity’s funds by taking on the
Dronfield run, as well as raising
awareness of the condition.
James’ mum, Ann Elsdon, said: “The

which needs all the help it can get to
raise money for research and help for
children diagnosed with the condition.
“Jude is non-verbal. Although he has
not hit any of his milestones on time,
he is slowly but surely showing a
gradual improvement day by day.
“He has now learnt to walk and can
feed himself with a spoon or fork. His
determination is empowering, and we
are beyond proud of him. His smile
lights up the room, he is always happy
and makes everyone laugh.
“Jude attends Hilltop Tots three days
a week and has a special educational
needs co-ordinator who dedicates her
time to encouraging him in all aspects
of nursery.”

Jack’s big day out raises £7,000
A
CHARITY fun day held by
the family of a baby who
had life-saving surgery for two
holes in his heart raised more
than £7,000.
Jack Ford was eight weeks old
when it was discovered he had
the congenital heart problem. He
underwent seven hours of openheart
surgery at Leeds Children’s
Hospital and will now, with
monitoring, be able to lead a full life.
While Jack was in hospital, his
parents Natalie and John, of
Dunston, Chesterfield, who also
have a daughter, Olivia, were
able to stay in accommodation
provided by Children’s Heart
Surgery Fund.
To say thank you, the couple and
Jack’s grandparents Deborah, a
nurse, and Richard Dixon, of
Dronfield, hosted a fund-raising
day at Hill Top Club in aid of the
fund.
More than 200 people went along
to lend their support as Jack turned
one.
There was musical entertainment
and a visit from Dronfield firefighters,
together with a cake stall, kids’ facepainting,
a raffle and auction and
much more.
Deborah said: “It was a fantastic
day and we raised more than we
ever imagined, with £7,080.
“It was wonderful to have had all
the support and everyone was so
generous.
“As I said to people on the day, without a heart we wouldn’t
have been there and without their hearts it wouldn’t have
happened.

First aid training
A
MEDICAL emergency prompted support of the
CSALS charity’s 999 Appeal.
John Tompkins, owner of The Devonshire Arms at Middle
Handley, explained why the incident motivated him to support
CSALS.
“Fortunately, there was someone on hand who was able to
help and the person involved received the help they needed,”
said John.
“The incident made me aware of the need for more people
with first aid skills so I contacted CSALS and arranged for a
training session to be delivered as part of their 999 Appeal.
“The training my staff received was professionally delivered
and provided them with the skills to save a life. I would urge
more business owners to ensure their staff receive similar
training because you never know when you might be called on
to save someone’s life.”
Debra Johnson, CSALS’ community facilitator, thanked John
for the support he provided, adding: “The medical emergency
at The Devonshire Arms just goes to show that you never know
where or when you may find yourself in a life or death situation.

Twinners pedal
to Germany
D
RONFIELD Town Twinners Neil Oxley, Rob Barron and
group chairman David Goater are pictured at the Peel
Monument on High Street before embarking on a cycle ride
to our German twin town, Sindelfingen.
Their first overnight stop was in Gainsborough, then it was onto
the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam.
Much of the rest of their journey followed the Rhein, arriving in
Sindelfingen over a week later in readiness for the town’s
summer Strassenfest.

The Community Outreach Worker Service can assist families
and individuals by making sure that they are receiving all the
benefits, grants, and funding that they are entitled to, and help

Dronfield’s
Team Rector
P
ARISHONERS have welcomed the new Rector
for local churches and his wife, who both grew
up in Dronfield.
Dronfield Parish Church was filled with almost 250
people for the Institution of Lee Townend as Team Rector
for the five Church of England churches in Dronfield,
Holmesfield and Unstone.
Lee and wife Liz married in Dronfield Parish Church and
lived here with their children, Jo and Megan, prior to Lee’s
ordination. Until recently, Lee was Archdeacon of Carlisle.
The position of Rector is a Crown appointment, which
means it has to be approved by the Lord Chancellor’s
office on behalf of King Charles III.
As well as heading up the team, Lee will have specific
responsibility for Dronfield Parish Church. The Institution
was led by the Bishop of Derby, The Right Rev Libby Lane,
Archdeacon of East Derbyshire, Venerable Karen Hamblin,
and Area Dean of NE Derbyshire, Rev Daniel Cooke.
The service – described as a “very happy occasion”- was
also attended by local MP Lee Rowley, other local
dignitaries, and members of Scouting, Guiding and the Air
Training Corps.
The Parish Church Choir led the music, some of which
had been especially requested by Lee and Liz, as they
have held special significance during his ministry. They
included hymns, anthems and worship songs from around
1600 to the present day.

HE Rotary Club of Dronfield held a speaker event
in Dronfield Civic Centre Hall.
Key Stage 2 pupils from Gorseybrigg Primary and St
Andrews CofE Primary had the opportunity to speak in
public with an audience of mixed ages and interests.
Although the format of the evening was a competition, the
main objective of the event was to give children the
opportunity to showcase their oral and vocal skills.
Rob Barron from the club said pupils contributed with a
high standard and performed with confidence. While
Gorseybrigg Primary won, “the standard from both teams
gave a result with very close marking.”
The audience was also entertained by local musician Ben
Lunn. The Rotary Club of Dronfield expressed its gratitude
for the time and effort given over to the event by staff,
children and audience members.
Tina’s new challenge
A
DRONFIELD breast cancer survivor is
embarking on a charity hike this
summer following the success of another
walking challenge.
Tina Gillatt, who works for Banner Plant Ltd,
completed 10,000 steps a day throughout
March of this year to raise £1,600 for Cancer
Research UK.
On July 8th, she and partner Shaun O’Rourke
are taking part in the 20-mile Pink Ribbon Walk
at Chatsworth in aid of Breast Cancer Now.
Tina said: “Myself and my mum were
diagnosed with breast cancer last year and after
receiving surgery and radiotherapy we feel like
the lucky ones to survive this disease.

“Sadly, my grandma wasn't so lucky and passed away from breast

Dolphins make a splash
C
ONGRATULATONS to these Dronfield Dolphins lads who
have raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK, Marie
Curie and The Swimathon Foundation.
Captained by 18-year old Matthew Wilson, a student at Chesterfield
College, the team swam a 5k relay (1.25k each) to support the annual
Swimathon event.
Colleagues were James Facer-Hampsey (16) who attends Sheffield
College, Joseph Diacon (15) a pupil at Silverdale School and Charlie
Hughes (15) from Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School. They all swim for
Dronfield Dolphins and sadly all know people who have been affected
by cancer.

NTHUSIASTS at Dronfield Vintage Dance love their sessions
at Dronfield Contact Club - and they also delight in raising
money for good causes.
Their recent charity dance realised £660 which has been donated to
support the work of Weston Park Cancer Charity.
The group’s next charity dance at the Snape Hill Lane venue will be on
Saturday, September 2nd, with Dronfield’s own Lady Lindy. Details from

Celebration time for the victorious Dronfield RUFC Colts team
Colts are three counties champions

RONFIELD Rugby Club is celebrating the success of its
Colts team in the NLD Colts Cup.
The team, made up of U17s and U18s, put on some impressive
performances as they overcame stiff opposition through the
group and knockout stages. They then showed their strength
and skill in defeating a talented Newark team 28-14 in the final
at the Lady Bay home of RFU Championship side,
Nottingham.
The result completes a journey through the age groups at
Dronfield Rugby Club for the team, with many of the players
starting out playing tag-rugby at the club and then progressing
through the Mini and Junior section of the club.
Team manager and coach Paul Hutchings said: “As a coaching

to crackdown on illegal drivers and
tackle the public's top road safety
concerns.
Since 2021, the Commissioner has
funded a raft of road safety initiatives to
reduce casualties and fatalities and
boost the force’s capacity to investigate
and prosecute dangerous drivers.
The results of these efforts were
discussed at the last Commissioner's Performance Scrutiny
Meeting. These meetings, attended by the Chief Constable and
senior officers, provide a platform for the Commissioner to
scrutinise progress against her Police and Crime Plan priorities
and identify areas where she expects to see further
improvements.
Among many successes highlighted was Operation Sparta, a
safety scheme funded by the Commissioner in May, 2022, to
target the fatal four offences - speeding, using a mobile phone,
not wearing a seatbelt and drink/drug driving.
The scheme provides speed enforcement at sites where
communities have raised concerns and uses intelligence to
target offenders. This will now continue throughout 2023.

The Commissioner has also enabled
additional speed enforcement by the
Roads Policing Unit through her budget.
This has seen ongoing speed
enforcement activity delivered at 40
sites every month. The initiative is one
of the force's most successful to date,
helping to improve road safety and
directly address public concerns around
speeding.
The number of speeding offences
detected increased significantly in 2021
(56,765 offences) and 2022 (54,649 offences) compared with
2018 (38,684 offences).
Said the Commissioner: “Too many people die or are seriously
injured on our roads. The delivery of tough enforcement and
education remain key priorities for me, and I have invested
substantial extra funding to deliver these.
“The projects I have supported protect all road users,
including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. They have also
increased the capacity of Roads Policing Unit to capture
evidence and prosecute motorists who put the public at risk.
“We know that road safety is the responsibility of many
partners, not just the police. I will continue to work closely with
all key stakeholders to maximise the safety of all road users.”

Out goes the bathtub;
in comes a walk-in shower
MEADOWHEAD couple, John and Kath, say it’s a pleasure to walk into their
newly-refurbished bathroom.
The pair have lived in their property for 45 years and in that time there have
been various modifications, but essentially the bathroom has been the same.
Now retired, John and Kath were keen to replace their bathtub with a walk-in
shower so, after reading other people’s glowing testimonials in this magazine,
John called into the A61 Bathrooms premises at Chesterfield Road, Woodseats,
to see what owner Craig Leighton could do.
Very shortly afterwards, Craig visited the Owens to chat through requirements,
and then provide a quote.
John said: “I think it’s the first time in my life that I just said ‘let’s go for it’

URING the year 2022-23 we have remained
focused on running the Town Council efficiently
and providing residents with value for money.
We have provided a well-balanced and carefully
managed budget with healthy reserves. We have kept
council tax low over the years, with a small increase this
year to reflect the rise in costs seen by the council and we
will continue to deliver the things that matter most to
residents.
The new council year got off to a busy start in May, with
Coun Lilian Deighton being elected Mayor and a motion
being passed at the council meeting to reiterate the Town
Council’s concerns over fracking within proximity to
residential buildings in response to Derbyshire and Derby
Minerals Local Plan (Winter 2021 to 2022 Consultation).
June started with celebrations for the HM Queen
Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, with the lighting of the Beacon
in Sindelfingen Park, bunting on the High Street and a
competition held at the annual Dronfield Gala.
July saw the continued emergence of the two wildflower
gardens in Sindelfingen Park and a further two at Hilltop,
for which we have received many compliments from our
residents.
Following the celebrations earlier in the year, September
saw the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The Town
Council opened a Book of Condolence in the Civic Hall,
held a Proclamation Service to announce the new King, laid
flowers in the Library Gardens and participated in the
National Moment of Reflection - sharing in the nation’s grief
at this time.
In October, the council agreed to apply for UK SPF
funding to refurbish Sindelfingen Park and we were
successful in securing £150,000.
The month also saw 165 poppies attached to lamp-posts
around the town and new LED lighting was also installed in
the car park behind Coal Aston Village Hall.
November saw the basketball court at Sindelfingen Park
being resurfaced and the installation of five new bus
shelters, to help improve accessibility at each of those
stops.
During December, 20 new trees were planted in
Sindelfingen Park, following some tree work earlier in the
year, which had required several trees to be felled.
February saw work start on the refurbishment of
Sindelfingen Park.
Following heavy snowfall in March, our outside services
team undertook work to several trees which had been
damaged by the snow and refilled every grit bin within the
town.
Two speed indicator devices were installed at the start of
March initially being located on Eckington Road in Coal
Aston and Carr Lane in Dronfield Woodhouse. These were
then relocated to Bowshaw and Gosforth Drive at the start
of May.
Following weeks of wet weather, the refurbished
Sindelfingen Park re-opened on 16th April and it has been
popular with residents since.
The Town Council-organised Dronfield Gala
Extreme Wheels also began running weekly sessions at
Sindelfingen Park from Easter to the October half-term
holidays. Sessions are also running at Coal Aston.
Throughout the year, the Town Council was pleased to
have organised so many popular community events, which
bring people together.
In the summer the annual Dronfield Gala was another
success with many people enjoying the activities on offer
during a sunny June day.
During September, the Civic Service was held in the Civic

Services were held in the Manor Gardens to mourn the monarch’s passing and to proclaim King Charles III
Hall in co-ordination with Dronfield Churches Together.
In November, in partnership with local groups and
organisations, the Town Council organised a service and
event on Remembrance Sunday, which included a wellattended
parade.
Christmas Trees and lights were installed around the town
in December and the popular Christmas Lights Switch-on
and much-loved Christmas Fest attracted many local
residents, who enjoyed fairground rides, food and drink
stalls.

There has also been a change of staff throughout the year
and we have seen the departure of our long serving Outside
Services Manager.
We continue to see what a caring, helpful and resilient
community Dronfield is and I must thank all the local
community groups who have continued to help and support
their members and community throughout the year.
Finally, I would like to thank all councillors who have
served selflessly over the past four years. Unfortunately, we
have lost a number of very dedicated and hard working
councillors, namely Coun William Jones, Coun Martin
Hanrahan and Coun Richard Spooner who did not get reelected.
I would like to welcome and congratulate those that have
recently been elected. I would also like to thank all council
staff, for their continued hard work and commitment to our
town.
Looking ahead, Dronfield Town Council will work hard
again this year to help Dronfield continue moving forwards,
bringing together community groups, local businesses and
residents and maintaining Dronfield as a great place to live
and work.

Town Council
Coronation tree planting

N Saturday, 6th May, Dronfield Town Councillors
planted an oak tree in Jubilee Park, in
celebration and commemoration of the coronation of
Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
The event was made even more special by featuring the
spade which had been used to plant the tree in the
Library Gardens in Dronfield in 1953 for the coronation of HM
Dronfield in Bloom

ESIDENTS may have noticed that hanging
baskets have started to appear on lamp-posts
around the town with flower boxes also being added
to the Civic Hall and at Cliffe Park.
In addition to this, around 7,500 bedding plants, will be
planted in flower beds around the town over the next few
weeks by the Town Council’s outside services team.
The bedding plants and hanging baskets are sourced locally
and consist of Busy Lizzie, Begonia, Geranium, Petunia,
French and American Marigolds, Zinnia and Gazania.
The flower beds and hanging baskets add a vibrant mix of
colour throughout the town during the summer months and
always receive positive feedback from residents.
Takeaway plan decision
T
HE Town Council has received the appeal decision
by the Secretary of State against a refusal to grant
planning permission by NE Derbyshire District for a
change of use to hot food takeaway at 1 Chesterfield
Road.
The property, in Dronfield’s conservation area, was
previously used for many years by St John Ambulance for
headquarters and training.
The original application was considered unacceptable for
several reasons including being too close to residential
properties which could be affected by odours and noise,
directly affected by parking restrictions including the
Queen Elizabeth II, 70 years previously.
The tree planting was attended by several members of the
public, as well as councillors.
It is hoped the tree will continue to grow over the coming
years and can be enjoyed by local residents for many years
to come.
Coun Lilian Deighton, who was Mayor at the time, planted
the tree on behalf of the Town Council.

Dronfield Neighbourhood Plan and NE Derbyshire District

Caretaker role
D
RONFIELD Town Council is looking to recruit a
new caretaker, who will help support the current
team with events in the Civic Hall and at Cliffe Park.
Having seen an increase in bookings again following the
pandemic, the position of caretaker is a vital role within the
council, ensuring venues are maintained and ready for use by
hirers.
The Civic Hall hosts a variety of different organisations and
events, and the caretakers are the main point of contact
during bookings - interacting with members of the public on a
regular basis.
Cliffe Park also hosts sporting bookings, as well as room hire
within Gosforth Lodge.

A
DAYTIME club which supports adults with learning
disabilities is now up and running at Coal Aston.
The charity Just Good Friends Club has launched the fourth of its
social hubs at Coal Aston Village Hall.
It currently runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from
10am-3pm, with the view to being Monday to Friday when numbers
become sustainable.
Hub leader, Yvonne Layland, said those who attend will enjoy a
range of activities such as crafts, quizzes, music and outings along
with learning transferable life skills through activities like cooking
and gardening.
She said: “It’s a wonderful venue and surrounded by lots of
beautiful places to visit.”
The charity has been running for over 27 years with social hubs in
three other locations across the county, as well as a number of
evening clubs, a monthly nightclub, day trips and weekends away.
The aim is to provide a safe environment to members, offering
them both a voice and a choice, while increasing opportunities to
socialise and build friendships within a club which is affordable.
The cost, £40 per day, may be funded through direct payments or
via social services or can be self-funded. Members bring their own
lunch and are encouraged to be involved in its preparation.
Well-dressed villages
NLY found in Derbyshire and the Peak District, well
O dressing is an ancient tradition with mystery
surrounding its exact origins.
Dressings are works of art hand-created by pressing natural
materials such as petals and seeds into clay.
Volunteers will once again be hard at work in local towns and
villages to keep the custom alive, usually raising money for good
causes.
Dronfield Woodhouse’s floral artwork is on display from 14th to
20th July on the green on the south side of Carr Lane, about
200m from its junction with Holmesfield Road.
Coal Aston’s well dressing will be blessed at lunchtime on 1st
July, the same day as the village gala, and stays in situ for a
week at the junction of Eckington Road and Drury Lane.
Holymoorside’s well dressings are made in the open on site, so
are available to view 24 hours a day, from when volunteers start
making them, from Saturday 19th August to Wednesday 23rd
August, from 10am-6pm. With a blessing at 7pm on Thursday
24th August, the artworks, lit at night, are available to view at any
time from Friday, 25th August, to Sunday, 10th September.
The well dressings can be found at the bottom of Cotton Mill Hill.
Spital Hill Cemetery’s well dressing will be on display from 9th-
17th September at 19 Hady Hill, Chesterfield.
The tradition of well dressing in Barlow dates back to 1615
when the local well continued to give water freely in spite of a
drought.
This year’s displays are from August 16th-20th with a dedication
in the evening, on August 16th, at St Lawrence’s Church.
All three floral masterpieces are sited on the main B6051
through the village: The Old Pump well dressing opposite the
junction of Wilkin Hill, near St Lawrence's Church; Valley Rise
well dressing in Commonside, at the junction of Valley Rise, and
also outside the Village Hall.
People can join in the making of the Bolsover Old Town Hall
well dressing, on Cotton Street, on 1st July, 10.30am-3pm, at the
Bolsover Artisan and Craft Market and the artwork will then
remain in place until 8th July.
Wingerworth has four well dressings – three at the Old
Sheepwash on Hillhouses Lane and one at Stubbing. A
dedication will be held on 5th August, at 10.30am, at the Old
Sheepwash site. They will stay on display until the 13th.

The Dronfield Arts Festival is the fifth to be
organised in the town. This year’s event has
moved to the summer to take full advantage of
its numerous outdoor performance spots. It
promises entertainment and fun for all ages

RONFIELD Arts Festival is back between 7th and 9th
July with dozens of performers, exhibitions and

activities, as well as food and drink.
Organisers have announced a packed programme across the
weekend in Dronfield Hall Barn, Manor Gardens and Civic Centre.
Much of the entertainment is free with people encouraged to
drop in, however there are also ticketed events.
Kicking off the festival on the Friday night is Music Night at the
Barn. The show features Barnsdale Hood, a three-piece band
playing traditional instrumental music, together with
acoustic/electric folk-rock duo Cellar Thieves and McShane and
Shaw, who perform music and
comedy featuring tight
harmonies, witty ad-libs and
virtuoso musicianship.
Also on stage is Phil Doleman
whose big voice, stomping foot,
and driving rhythms on both
ukuleles and banjos take you
back to the juke joints of the
20s.
On Saturday, 8th July, circus
creative Rae Rae is to present
an introduction to the
challenges and skills of hooping.
Anyone can do it, but you need
the correct hoop. Rae Rae will
show participants – both kids and
adults - the best techniques, and get you hooping in no-time!
Saturday showcases young performers from Rhythmix Dance
Studio, Miniver Academy and DanceDaze and features Dronfield
Baptist Ukulele Group, Banned Blues, a two-hand blues band,
and local band Sons of Rodger.
Completing the daytime line-up is The Larks Quartet - female
acapella singers.
That evening, Greentop Circus is coming to town for an
extravaganza of circus and cabaret to blow your socks off!
Greentop Circus - Cabaret Night features Zoot (Tim Byrom) - a
highly skilled circus performer with an energetic and entertaining
show that’s packed with preposterous and precarious tricks.
Also on the bill is comedy juggler Matt Tiffany famous for his
vast repertoire of tricks, his act displaying a curated compendium
of the greatest feats from the last 200 years of juggling.
Meanwhile, Lee Partridge is an actor and circus artist from the
Midlands, who performs cyr wheel, a relatively new art form in
circus. Lee uses a huge spinning metal hoop to manipulate space

and perform daring feats of acrobatics and balance.
The line-up is completed by Emily Rose and Nikki Taggart,
aerial hoop duo, hula-hoop, fire dancing, stilts and circus theatre
specialists.
Sunday 9th July’s offering is equally busy, beginning with a
Belarobics demonstration and workshop. Belarobics combines
the fitness moves of belly dance with inspiring choreography and
uplifting music.
Children of Dance Dronfield will demonstrate how traditional
English folk dancing is done before giving audiences a chance to
join in.
There is also an opportunity to try your hand at circus skills
courtesy of Circus Avago. Try tightrope, juggling, unicycling, rolabola,
diabolo, clowning, tumbling and loads more in this actionpacked
event for all ages.
Musical entertainment is from the following: Ava Bateman – a
young singer-songwriter who fuses together genres of Latin, pop,
acoustic and alternative to create a unique modern sound;
Sheffield U3A Ukulele Group; The Abbey Session Folk Group;
The Two Guitar Guys; and two
young local bands The Magenta
Apricots Band and Ben and the
Kickbacks.
Other attractions on Sunday are
Okami Jiu Jitsu, who will be
demonstrating traditional
Japanese jiu jitsu and selfdefence
techniques and A&C’s
Panorama Players who present
a short but sweet tale from their
‘crankie’ theatre.
Closing the Festival this year will
be Dronfield choir Ladies Voices
who stage a spectacular show at
Dronfield Civic Hall on Sunday
and introduce the new Young
Ladies Voices group, plus Dronfield Parish Young Voices.
Throughout the festival weekend, Sheffield Print Makers will be
in the Courtyard room at the Barn.
And after last year’s success, Dronfield Arts Festival is delighted
to be hosting the Open Arts Exhibition once again.
More than 30 experienced artists from Dronfield and district
have submitted their original artwork for selection and exhibition
over the festival weekend.
The exhibition will take place in the Barn Gallery and all artists’
work will be for sale. Artists and stewards will be on hand to meet
visitors and answer any questions throughout the show.
Entries for the Barn’s Children’s Art Exhibition will also be on
display over the weekend.
Donations to help with the cost of staging the festival are
appreciated. The Barn would also be pleased to hear from
anyone who would like to volunteer over the weekend.

T’S the big one! Fun-packed Dronfield Gala is one of
the best free attractions for miles around and this
summer’s event takes place on Sunday, 25th June, in
Cliffe Park from noon until 5pm.
This Gala promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a
mixture of old favourites and new additions.
The Aviary will be swooping
in, with their beautiful birds of
prey. Fairground rides return
by popular demand and new,
exciting activities this year
include mini pony rides and the
Mega Slide.
This year will also see the
addition of scrumptious cream
teas served in Gosforth Lodge.
The Town Council takes pride
in Dronfield Gala being an event
for the local population to come
together, with community groups
taking centre stage with their
performances.
This year, look out for Miniver
Academy, Ladies Voices and
Sheffield Concert Band kicking off
the celebrations at noon.
The music tent will showcase performances from local bands
and artists.
There will be more food and drink outlets than ever this year,

Some of Barlow’s most beautiful gardens will be welcoming
visitors when the village’s popular Open Gardens event returns.
Sixteen plots are taking part in the event on Sunday, 2nd July,
from 10am-4pm, from rolling country acres, cottage gardens, pots
of botanicals, wildlife-friendly spaces and community allotments.
For regular attendees, there are four new gardens to explore
this year. Also new for 2023 is a children’s treasure hunt where
youngsters have to seek out painted pebbles in each of the
gardens to receive a prize. The pebbles are being painted by
children at Barlow School.
Organisers say all the gardens offer a unique and personal
experience to visitors and it’s thanks to the generosity of garden
owners, volunteers, and visitors that thousands of pounds have
been raised over the years.
Monies go to St Lawrence’s Church; last year’s proceeds were
spent on roof repairs and interior redecoration.
Teas and home-made cakes will be served at the church during
the Open Gardens event as in previous years.
Tickets are available in advance from Hackney House and on
the day from car parks and the church.
Norton History Group hosts a presentation by Fiona Milne on
Birley Spa Bath House and Spa on Wednesday 5th July, from 2-

on Sunday, 16th July, where you can learn how to reduce your
single use plastic and have a fun family day out with craft
workshops, kids’ entertainment, food, drink, and live

The Plastic Free Festival will be what it says on the tin… with no
single use plastics given out during the event so take your own

Grab your buckets and spades as the seaside returns to
Sheffield's Peace Gardens this summer.
Sheffield by the Seaside will include a whole host of family fun

HE Pomegrante Theatre’s renovations have given
Chesterfield Operatic Society an opportunity to take
their musicals to new local venues and their forthcoming
production of Little Shop of Horrors will be performed at
Dronfield Civic Hall.
Little Shop of Horrors has made audiences scream with
laughter since 1982. In this gleefully gruesome musical, Seymour,
a meek florist's assistant, stumbles upon a strange plant which
he affectionately names ‘Audrey II’ after his secret love - it’s a
plant which starts to
grow, sing and
develop a thirst for
human blood!

Medieval fun in Chesterfield
Chesterfield’s popular Medieval Fun Day is returning to
entertain the crowds on Tuesday, 25th July, from 10am-4pm, in
Chesterfield town centre.
The Market Place will be full of stalls selling a range of goods as
well as fun and games for children in the same location. Head to
the medieval encampment in the grounds of the Crooked Spire to
see knights in battle or look out for the medieval-themed
entertainment, including Epico the Dragon, a jester plus a Tudor
musician, across the town centre.
Junction Arts has announced the launch of its first Chesterfield
Children’s Festival, a free weekend of fun for families that will
include music, theatre, storytelling, dance, and art workshops.
The two-day event, funded by Arts Council England, will celebrate
the joy of childhood, imagination, and play and takes place in
Queen’s Park on 29th and 30th July, from 10am-4pm daily.
Entertainment announced so far includes a silent disco tour, an
interactive game zone, a comedy club, a circus, story time yoga, tiedye
workshops, face-painting and a brass band that plays Disney
tunes!
Music and live theatre will also take place in and around the town
centre during the festival weekend.
Lowedges Community Festival at Greenhill Park is huge and
it’s back for another year with free entry.
The event takes place from noon to 4pm on Sunday, 14th
August, and includes a funfair, stalls, a massive classic car and

Social Club, this years Rockin’ Roots charity music event will be

Local Market - a
quarterly market
showcasing the very
best products and
produce that the area
has to offer.
Stallholders sell all
kinds of tempting wares
from three locations –
the Church Hall, The Village Hall and The Angel, all located on or
off the main road.
You can buy a range of crafts and tasty food from around the
area, including pies, cakes, breads, meats, wines, beer, cider and
spirits, art, clothing, bags and accessories, plants and more.
The vibrant market was started five years ago and has grown
over the years. As a charity, it raises money for good causes in
Holmesfield.
Monies raised to date have helped organisations including a
toddler group and the local youth club, and have been used to
provide a defibrillator and wildflowers for the village.
Organisers say people who attend enjoy the mix of stalls, the
relaxed atmosphere and the fact stallholders are rotated so there
is always something different to catch the eye.
This summer’s market takes place from 10am-2pm, on Saturday
8th July, with more markets to follow later in the year on Saturday
14th October and Saturday 2nd December.

Coal Aston village inns offer the
warmest of welcomes - bar none!
N
O news is good news at The Cross Daggers and The Royal Oak where
customers enjoy the same warm welcome, smart surroundings and
quality drinks as they have done for year after year.
At both pubs, landlord Anthony Hutchinson does his utmost to retain the friendly
atmosphere which has served the village well for generations.
Since taking on The Daggers from his mum Christine and stepfather Derek 23
years ago, Anthony has been keen to respect the pub’s proud traditions and it is
exactly the same story at The Royal Oak. Both inns are right at the heart of village
life, but are also welcoming to visitors to Coal Aston.
“Normality has returned following the pandemic - and everyone is delighted,” said
Anthony. “Both pubs are doing well and are busy and it’s because they are lovely,
happy places to be.”
While each pub has its own character, both are traditional inns where people from
all age ranges can come together.
There are nods to the past at both venues, particulary The Daggers where there
are many village artefacts and old photographs on the walls. There are other
touches that make the place unique, including an array of banknotes from all over
the world which are affixed to the ceiling.
Down the road at The Royal Oak - still known to many as ‘The Pond’ because a
small pond was once right outside - a fluttering of butterflies adorns the pub and
customers can enjoy taking up the challenge of the historic ‘ring a bull’ game.
Anthony and his staff pride themselves on their pubs’ high standards, quality and
cleanliness. At The Daggers, there is a glass window set into the floor by the bar
which allows customers to see the immaculately kept cellar.
The pubs don’t serve food, so the focus is on extremely well-stocked bars.
Traditional, hand-pulled ales are at the heart of the offering and although these are
regularly changing, Tetleys is a mainstay as both places were once owned by the old
Yorkshire brewery.
A blonde beer, such as Farmers from Bradfield or Neepsend Blonde, is also always
on offer, together with a dark ale, Guinness and a selection of refreshing UK and
continental lagers, plus ciders which are hugely popular at this time of year.
There are dozens of different whiskies to choose from too, a large selection of gins
and also many wines.
Highlights each week are the regular quiz nights. General knowledge is the topic at
both pubs every Monday evening, then Thurday night sees a fun music quiz night at
The Royal Oak.
The village’s sports fans enjoy getting together to watch the big football matches,
Test Match cricket and tennis from Wimbledon on TV at The Daggers.

- promises to be the busiest day of the
year at The Royal Oak.
Open from 12 noon, visitors to the Gala and well
dressing will be made welcome throughout the
day, then in the evening live entertainment will be
provided by keyboard-playing landlord Anthony’s
own band - Beverlina & The Sugar Tax. Anthony
will be joined by colleagues Beverlina, Alan and
Ian in performing hit sounds from the 1960s, 70s
and 80s.
Before that, The Daggers is to host a special
evening too. Friday, June 30th, will see tasty
Mangiamo Italian street food served to customers
from 4pm.
Anthony has always played a key role in the
local community and was recently re-elected to
serve on Dronfield Town Council as an
independent member.
He said: “I was grateful so many people turned
out to vote for me and I would like to thank
everyone for their support.”

called in to enjoy a free trial dance class
W
HEN Sally Wragg began dancing at the age of two,
training at the famed Constance Grant Dance
Centre in Sheffield, little could her family have known that
she was taking the first steps on what would go on to be a
lifetime’s career.
Dronfield’s Sally has now been dancing for 44 years and has 30
years of teaching experience.
She successfully auditioned for professional dance jobs on
cruise ships but turned down those opportunities, realising that
that teaching was her main calling.
“I knew from a young age that I not only wanted to teach, but
wanted my own school,” she explained. “In November, 2011, my
dream came true when I opened my own dance school, starting
from scratch. I had three classes a week, which very quickly grew
and by April, 2013, I moved into my current studio premises, with
two rooms running at the same time, five days a week.”
To meet demand from young and old alike, Sally now employs
three trusted and talented members of staff. She now mainly
coaches teacher training, as well as teaching her adult classes.
“What makes DDTA unique is I also include 'Be Activated', as
well as running workshops. We are the first dance school in
Derbyshire and Yorkshire to include this amazing energyincreasing
technique that not only improves your body’s
performance, but it also reduces the risk of injury.”
Hundreds of local people took their first dancing steps at a
young age with Sally and her team, boosting confidence, having
fun and the freedom to express themselves.
Said Sally: “Learning to dance has many benefits, so much more
than people realise. It gives children and teens the confidence to
not only work as a team but independently too. It teaches
commitment, accountability and to communicate effectively with
others. It develops both body awareness and positive
mindfulness and encourages adaptability, resilience and to the
opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone - which is where
the true magic happens.”
Small group class sizes allow DDTA to give every child the
quality attention they deserve in a fun, safe and nurturing
environment. The Theatre Dance Class includes Ballet, Tap and

friendships.
But Sally gets as much enjoyment out of encouraging adults to
step out too. Adult classes are for people who want to learn to

danced as a child and would love to start again.
Said Sally: “It’s never too late to learn to dance. No lycra, no
judgement, just great fun! You can forget the pressures of daily
life and put a spring back into your step.”

“I started with a beginners’ class in Tap. This was the first time I had attended any dance
classes, the only dance I have done before is in a nightclub after a few cheeky drinks.
“When I arrived I was made to feel very welcome and relaxed. As this was the first week of the
class, it was great to start at the same level as the other ladies attending. We began with putting
together a few steps and, once mastered, we then added more steps and progressed until we
had a short routine which was danced to ‘Blame It On The Boogie’. The class was great for
some exercise and was also a lot of fun.
“We then went into a second class - Jazz. This was also a beginners’ class but the other ladies
were four weeks in, so I had to learn fast and get up to speed with the group.
“Again, everyone made me feel very welcome and at ease. Sally started the class with a recap
of the previous weeks and took us through the routine that the rest of the class had previously
learnt. I was surprised that with this been my first ever Jazz class I actually picked up it up fairly
quickly and really enjoyed the class.
“As the class went on and we added more steps to the routine, there may have been a few
wrong steps by myself, but Sally was great and went back over the moves to help me. This
routine was danced to One Night Only from the show Dream Girls.
“Both classes were fabulous and no matter what is going on in the outside world, once you
begin your class all is forgotten and the fun begins.”

Keep safe keeping fit in the sun
W
HETHER you are committed to a strenuous exercise
regime or you just enjoy a walk in the countryside,
with forecasts suggesting unprecedented heatwaves this
summer, make sure you are prepared for keeping fit in
sweltering temperatures.
For people who love workouts, the dangers of exercising in the
sun are often underestimated.
Your heart will be asked to work harder when you are working
out in the heat. This means you would need to expect a slower
running pace than before.
The experts say the pace you usually set will slow down by six
to ten seconds per km, for every five degrees increase in
temperature.
Though the heat effects will differ based on individuals, running
slower ensures your body will function more healthily under the
sun.
Many people tend to neglect the importance of applying
external methods to stay cool and healthy during workouts,
however, they could be very effective at protecting your body.
A cooling face spray can be used to cool the body. Products
such as an ice towel or cooling pads can also help your body
keep from overheating, which could lead to heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.
Exposing yourself to the sun during workouts may impose
dangers. Therefore take care of your skin health by applying a
sun cream with a sun protection factor over 30. If you are going
out for a swim in the heat, water resistant sun creams may be a
better choice for you.
It is important to know your body and pick the most suitable
exercising type when the temperature rises.
If you don’t want to miss exercising outdoors, switch running and
hiking to swimming or yoga. Reduce the tensity and duration of
your normal exercises too. Short sessions usually work better in
hot summer, putting less stress on your body than long, cardio
workouts.
If you still feel the need to exercise in the sun when it’s hot,
either do it earlier in the morning before sunrise or try it later in
the afternoon or after sunset. Avoid doing intense exercises
between 10am-4pm outside as it’s usually when the sun is at its
hottest.
You should always make sure to wear the most comfortable
clothes, no matter if they are tank tops or tight gym clothes.
Avoid clothes that might restrict your movement or trap your
body.
When there is a heatwave, you may find light-coloured and
loose-fitting clothes more comfortable as they allow air to flow
over and your sweat evaporates.
Hydration is really vital to our body no matter what time of
the year, but it’s even more important during summer
weather.
While many of us know the importance of drinking water after
an exercise to restore any fluid levels you've lost, you should
start drinking one or two hours before your workout too. This
reduces your risk of becoming dehydrated faster and prepares
your heart and body for your physical activity.
Eating water-rich food alaso helps with your body's hydration
level, such as watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, strawberries,
tomato or an ice lolly.
If you notice heat exhaustion symptoms such as dizziness,
nausea and weakness, or other heat-related illnesses, pause
immediately. It is unsafe to push against your limits, especially
during a heatwave.

Town’s run in the sun

HERE was a double celebration in
the sunshine for Dronfield
Running Club members in the town’s
2023 10k race.
Postponed from March because of bad
weather, the warm conditions certainly
suited DRC’s Tom Shaw (No 68) who
won the men’s race in a time of 33m
17s, while colleague Becky Hansen
(No 134) was the first female home in
38m 44s.
The fun run was dominated by the
Diadon family from Whirlow in Sheffield,
Matthew being the first boy to cross the
line and sister Maddie was the race’s
fastest girl.
Not content with the warm conditions,
one runner completed the course in his
bare feet and another finished the 10k
route around the Gosforth Valley and
Dronfield Woodhouse in his complete

House’s anti-witch markings
A
SERIES of unusual markings on the
fireplace at Revolution House, Old
Whittington, have been confirmed as
protection marks designed to ward off
witches.
The apotropaic markings (commonly referred to
as anti-witch marks) depict a double ‘V’ which is a
reference to the Virgin Mary Protector of Life and
Family. Markings like this were usually placed
near openings or windows with the intention of
keeping witches and evil spirits out.
The unusual markings were spotted by one of
the museum team who photographed them and
sent the images to Prof Ronald Hutton, who
identified them.
A professor at the University of Bristol and
leading authority on folklore, he said: “These are
convincing examples of apotropaic markings. The
interlocked VVs are absolutely standard. The
others are harder to make out but could
correspond to more than one other known type of
mark in the repertoire.”

Is this the
Year of the
Dandelion?
A yellow peril which is the scourge of
gardeners... or a colourful friend with
herbal qualities? Prof Ian Rotherham
studies the humble Dandelion
F
OR just a few glorious weeks, the common Dandelion
provides one of nature’s spectacles that often, we
simply overlook.
This is the beauty of the commonplace and particularly when
they mix with common Daisies and Cuckoo Flower (or Lady’s
Smock), they are stunning.
The common name of ‘Dandelion’ comes from the French ‘Dent
de Lion’ or the lion teeth deriving from the jagged-edged leaves.
Taraxacum officinale, to give it the scientific name, is really a
group or complex of a great many ‘micro-species’, but these are
only of interest to specialist botanists who enjoy ‘splitting’ rather
than ‘lumping’ their plants. Sad and lonely perhaps, but then
somebody has to do it, and there are more than 200 microspecies
to work with.
The common names provide me with more fun though, with
Jack-piss-the-bed, Pissy Beds, Pittley Beds, Peasant’s Clock, Wetthe-Bed,
Tiddle Beds, Dog’s Posy, Old Man’s Clock, Swine’s
Snout, and others. Many names refer to the diuretic herbal
qualities of the plant if eaten.
As children, we were instructed to use the white sap of the
Dandelion flower stalks to cure warts (told to my parents by a
travelling gypsy herbalist). Although sadly, it didn’t work!
Overlooked and under-valued, the Dandelion has produced
dramatic shows this spring and I wonder, if this is the ‘Year of the
Dandelion’? In Sheffield's Gleadless Valley, and elsewhere, there
have been three weeks or so of
splendid (free) wildflower displays.
The humble Dandelion is perhaps
most people's idea of a 'weed'.
Nevertheless, viewed subjectively, a
weed is merely a plant in the wrong
place.
After the end of the flowering
around early to mid-May, the plant
fulfils its ‘weedy’ promise with its
reproductive strategy that is to
produce as many seeds as possible.
Furthermore, these propagules have
the other characteristic of weeds in
that they disperse freely, in this case
via the wind, across the wider
landscape including your garden.
I am sure that this is where the horticulturalists amongst you will
cringe because the Dandelion is the scourge of gardeners across
our region.
Soon the air will be full of tiny parachute seeds blowing here
and there across the countryside in both urban and urban-fringe
areas. Mostly they come to grief, but undoubtedly enough will
survive to wreak havoc in lawns and borders everywhere.
A few years back, I did a quick head count of flowers and
seedheads and followed this with a ‘back of a fag packet’
calculation. I reckoned a field about 100m x 100m full of
Dandelion flowers probably produces up to 25 million seeds
each week during the flowering period. Well, they can afford for a
few to go AWOL.
Other wildflowers and native grasses also benefit from less
intensive mowing regimes, with roadsides and associated
greenspaces becoming havens for
pollinators like bumblebees and early
butterflies.

Buttercup, the common Daisy, Ox-
Eye Daisy, Speedwell and the pretty
Lady's Smock follow close behind.
Because these displays all come
freely and commonly, we often fail to
value them or, worse still, to even
notice them.
Despite herbal side-effects noted
above, both leaves and flowers are
widely used in cooking to produce
Dandelion pasta, pickled Dandelions,
Dandelion and mozzarella pie, and
more. Apparently, Dandelion leaves lightly fried with the common
Rat’s-tail Plantain is a delicious treat, but I’m not convinced.

composting plea
P
RODUCING your own compost is easy, can save you
money and help the environment - that’s the message
from Derbyshire County Council.
With a home compost bin, you can use what you would
normally throw away - raw fruit and vegetable peelings, teabags,
garden waste, paper and cardboard - to make your own
compost.
Around 30% of the waste in your bin could be composted and
saved from landfill.
Even if you have a green waste collection in your area, you can
still compost at home. Keep the best materials for your own
home compost bin and put things like grass cuttings and woody
hedge clippings into your green waste collection bin.
The council provides a scheme with Get Composting where you
can order discounted compost bins and accessories.
Green waste can be taken to the authority’s household waste
recycling centres for free.
You can also pick up bags of peat-free compost made from
garden waste for £3 per bag.
Stocks of the compost are good at the recycling centres but in
case of high demand residents are advised not to make a special
journey.
The recycling centres are open from 8.30am-6pm daily.

HESE two photographs don’t turn the clock
back all that many years but the event they
capture probably wouldn’t happen today.
It was around 1992 that an escapologist –
unidentified - visited the former Gosforth School.
Pupils watched his presentation prior to him
being suspended from a crane jib 100ft off the
ground!
As can be seen, an ambulance was on hand in
case proceedings went wrong.
