AN ELDERLY woman who was missing for
eight weeks before she was found dead in bush
near the Bridle Path likely died “within a day or
so”, a coroner’s report reveals.
Shirley Warrington, 85, went missing on the
evening of July 10, 2021, after going for a drive
with her husband, Wallace Warrington.
Despite a large-scale search, she was not
found until September 6. Her husband died two
days before she was found.
Club celebrates in fine style
THE LYTTELTON CLUB’S 150th Jubilee weekend
saw several hundred people take part in the
celebrations.
Club governing team member Steve Gallop said
the three-day-long event was “really good”.
The festivities began on Friday with a welcome
ceremony at the club, followed by live music and a
full buffet dinner.
Saturday featured a car show and poker run tour
to other Christchurch clubs, which Gallop said was
a highlight.
Sunday saw a Bubbles and Brunch event, and a
closing ceremony with hot drinks and cake.
“It was a big weekend for the club,” Gallop said.
CHARLOTTE Crone and
her band hope to transport
audiences back in time with
their tribute to musician Kate
Bush, as part of the Lyttelton
Arts Festival.
The festival begins on Friday
and runs for nine days, with
Crone and her band closing the
event with the tribute.
“I love (Kate Bush’s) songwriting,
it’s so unique,” Crone said.
“She’s quite a polarizing artist
. . . The people that love her
really love her.”
Kate Bush is an English
singer-songwriter who rose to
fame with songs like Wuthering
Heights, her debut single in
1978.
Singing since she was in high
school, Crone is excited about
the performance but says she
feels the pressure of being the
festival’s closing act.
“I’m really excited about it.
“Hopefully it’s like stepping
back in time.”
While keeping the performance
authentic, Crone and the
band will incorporate audiovisual
aspects of Bush’s music
videos.
“It’s got so much tech involved,”
Crone said.
The band is made up of
Hamish Oliver (keys/synth),
Doug Brush (drums), Mike
Fudakowski (bass and vocals),
Elena Berg (vocals) and guest
Tamara Smith (flute).
They will play some of Bush’s
Heights, Running Up That Hill
and Babushka.
The festival combines comedy,
drama, music and the arts and
showcases what Lyttelton has
to offer by featuring locals and
their crafts.
The Whakaraupo Carving
Centre ran a workshop at last
year’s festival on understanding
the ideas, designs, creation and
presentation process of whakairo
customary practices, and will
be running it again this year.
“(It will be about) all of the
things we have to think about
while we’re carving,” said manager
Damian Mackie.
Other entertainment includes
a 12-hour movie marathon,
workshops and cabaret.
Lyttelton Arts Factory chair
Joe Bennett said the festival is
“very Lyttelton”.
“It’s all done from here. Lyttelton
is a very creative little place,”
he said.
“We deliberately kept prices
low so people can afford to
come.”
The festival ran for the first
time last year with a two-day
event.
“We were just sort of dipping
our toe in the water last year,”
but this year is ‘bigger is better’,”
Bennett said.
“Our patronage will be 50
to 60 per cent people coming
through the tunnel, I expect.”
In Brief
END OF ERA FOR JETTIES
Three historical jetties in
Lyttelton Harbour are being
dismantled. Built between
1875 and 1881, the jetties have
been unused since 1994 and
are uneconomical to repair.
Lyttelton Port Company chief
infrastructure officer Mike
Simmers said it was sad to see
the jetties go. “The jetties have
seen an incredible amount of
history take place, with their
construction part of the early
growth of the port,” Simmers
said. Construction to remove the
jetties will begin on July 10.
BOARD CHANGES FOR
PORT COMPANY
The city council has approved a
new chair and two new directors
for the Lyttelton Port Company’s
as chair and Dr Nicki Craugord
and Julian Hughes as independent
directors. Bragg is a chartered
accountant with governance and
commercial experience and has
been an acting interim director for
LPC since the end of April.
‘Death most likely resulted
from exposure to the cold’
•From page 1
On July 10, they went for a
drive and were seen by police in
Rolleston at 7.20pm when their
driving came to the attention of
another motorist. About 8.30pm
their vehicle was seen on a traffic
camera travelling on Tunnel Rd,
Ferrymead.
At some point, Shirley left
the car and at about 10.20pm
the vehicle was seen on a traffic
camera travelling on Bridle
Path Rd in Ferrymead with one
occupant. The car was then seen
on multiple cameras with just
one occupant between 1.50am
and 2.20am on July 11.
The report said the temperature
was “sub-zero” the night of July
10 to 11. About 10.30am on July
11, Wallace told his daughter he
did not know where his wife was
and police spoke to him.
He was unable to recall the
circumstances of her leaving
the car, and where she did so.
A large-scale search and rescue
operation then began.
More than 40 people and
several police dogs combed
Ferrymead, the surrounding
areas, bush tracks and waterways
for her.
On September 6, Shirley was
found about 15m from the Bridle
Path track in Heathcote. She
was down a bank in an area of
“reasonably dense bush”.
A forensic pathologist did an
autopsy on Shirley the following
day. The pathologist believed she
died from probable hypothermia
in a person with cardiovascular
disease, lung disease, and
dementia. She had no identifiable
injuries.
The pathologist concluded she
was likely to have died “within
a day or so” of being reported
missing.
“Based on the autopsy
findings and the circumstances
surrounding the death, as
currently understood, death most
likely resulted from exposure
to the cold with her underlying
health problems hastening death
under the stress of environmental
exposure. Given the lack of
identifiable injuries, she is
unlikely to have fallen off the
cliff,” the pathologist said.
The police investigation found
there was nothing suspicious
about Shirley’s death.
Her family made a complaint
to the Independent Police
Conduct Authority relating to
the search and rescue effort. The
IPCA advised the coroner that
police had spoken with Shirley’s
son to discuss his concerns and
to explain the actions they took
in response to her going missing.
The son had acknowledged the
explanation and had the officer’s
contact details for any further
questions in the future, the
report said.
The IPCA believed it was an
“appropriate response” to the
complaint, and no further action
was taken. Reviews were also
carried out on the missing person
investigation and the search and
rescue operation.
McKenzie said no concerns
had been raised in the coronial
jurisdiction by Shirley’s family
and there was nothing suspicious
or “relevantly concerning” about
the circumstances in which she
left the car.
“I am satisfied that opening an
inquiry would not yield evidence
disclosing the more specific
circumstances leading up to Mrs
Warrington’s death. This is due
to Mr Warrington being unable
to recall the circumstances in
which Mrs Warrington left the
vehicle and where she did so [Mr
Warrington cannot now be asked
for any further information, if
he were able to provide it]; the
search and rescue operation
which examined this to the
extent it could in real time; the
extensive traffic camera analysis;
and there being no witnesses
apart from Mr Warrington to
Mrs Warrington leaving the car.”
‘Traumatic’ wait for mum to be found
• By Sam Sherwood
SHIRLEY Warrington’s
daughter Karen Colville
visits the area where she was
found every Mother’s Day and
birthday, leaving flowers by a
tree.
She said the eight-week wait
for her body to be found was
“traumatic”. She said a group of
family members were parked
in a car park a short distance
from where Shirley would
later be found, a day after her
disappearance.
“[They] were trying to figure
out where to go next and she
was right there, but we had no
indication, all we got told was
Ferrymead . . . so, of course,
you search everywhere around
Ferrymead. “It was like oh, my
gosh, we were so close but yet so
far and it was no one’s fault.”
She felt a sense of relief the
morning she got the call from
police to say Shirley had been
found, having
read about
families still
searching for
loved ones more
than 10 years
on.
Colville said
Karen
Colville
she had thought
over various
explanations for
what had happened.
“At the time when she went
missing, I would say to the police
how about we look out at
rivers, you hear of people they
might’ve got picked up and
dumped, that was the first thing
in my mind.
“[She may have been] hiding
in a house, someone had taken
her in and with her dementia she
wouldn’t know what to say, they
wouldn’t get anything out of her,
she could’ve been anywhere,
could’ve been washed up on a
beach.”
Colville had hoped to get a
more definite time of how long
Shirley was missing before she
died.
“In your mind, you think:
‘How long did she lie there
trying to call out for help?’ That’s
always been in my mind – was it
the first night, did the frost get
her? The worst part is every time
I look out to the Port Hills, it’s
that thought because you always
look out there when you’re
looking for her, it’s just one of
those things.”
Colville would visit the couple
every week. She knew her
mother had dementia, but she
was not going to split the couple
up to put her in a dementia
home.
“That wasn’t the right thing to
do, they were happy. They’d been
married 10 years and you could
still talk to her. I always made
them laugh.”
She thanked the police for
their work and said the report
gave her some closure.
Head On - An All Black’s memoir of rugby, dementia, and the
hidden cost of success by Carl Hayman, With Dylan Cleaver
Carl Hayman, All Black #1000, once the most highly prized player in world rugby
and a giant of the game in every sense - someone who was always respected,
even feared. But at the end of seventeen years as a professional rugby player,
the last eight played with the sole aim of setting up his family’s future, Hayman’s
life began to unravel in nightmarish fashion. Head On is about the pressures on
the modern athlete, where physical performance and commerce collide, and
players become victims of their own success. Exploited then left out in the cold,
Hayman is now left counting the hidden cost of the achievements that would
have exceeded any young rugby player’s wildest dreams. As a relatively young
man, still in his early 40s, Hayman contends with brain degeneration he should
only be seeing at the end of his life, not in his prime. This book is also about how
all of us can better understand how the decisions we make can have unintended
consequences, and how we can better serve our young sporting talent.
Wavewalker: Breaking Free
by Suzanne Heywood
‘A jaw-dropping and thrilling real-life adventure on the high seas for a girl who
just craved normality and finally found her way back to it’ SARAH BROWN
Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on
a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a
decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with
little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and
no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children.
Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education
and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing, a survival story
of a child deprived of safety, friendships, schooling and occasionally drinking
water… At seventeen Suzanne earned an interview at Oxford University and
Under The Weather - A Future Forecast for New Zealand
by James Renwick
The must-read book on what New Zealand’s changing climate means for our
everyday lives.
A warmer world will change more than just our weather patterns. It will change
the look of the land around us, what grows and lives on it - including us.
In this must-read book, Professor James Renwick untangles how we know
what the future holds and why it matters to our everyday lives. He looks at New
Zealand’s increasingly frequent natural disasters, warming and acidifying waters,
the creep of rising sea levels, and the ways that the changing weather will affect
our agriculture, lifestyle, food security and economy.
Under the Weather is a picture of a planet in danger, a reality-check on what that
means for this country, and a reminder that the shape of our future is up to us.
A landmark literary event, it went on to win the James Wattie Book of the Year
story of a father and son set within a three-day tangihanga.
Those who love Pounamu, Pounamu will immediately recognise that already
nascent themes that have continued to preoccupy him over a lifetime of writing.
The project will see three new
pedestrian crossings put in, new
kerb build-outs and an increase
in parking spaces.
“We want everyone to feel
safe on our streets, particularly
around schools and local
centres,” city council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said.
“One of our key focuses is
on making sure that we have
A new mid-block pedestrian
crossing will be placed on
London St, between Canterbury
and Oxford Sts, and two new
pedestrian crossings will be put
at the Canterbury/London Sts
intersection.
“We want to improve safety
for all road-users and allow
everyone to confidently make
journeys to school and around
the community,” Wright said.
“These upgrades will
prioritise people walking and
crossing the street, reduce
crossing distances and increase
accessibility.”
The road markings
will be changed and
the existing parking
restrictions outside Lyttelton
School will be extended,
resulting in two additional
parking spaces.
“The upgrade will
encourage people to walk
contaminating
harbour water
WATER TESTING in Lyttelton
Harbour, Akaroa and the
surrounding bays has revealed
humans, birds and dogs are among
the sources of contamination.
Environment Canterbury under
took the testing to determine what
faecal pollution is entering the water
after rainfall.
ECan surface water science manager
Dr Elaine Moriarty said the
city council is now leading an investigation
into how the contaminants
are entering waterways in the area.
“The investigation is complex as
every public and private connection
poses a potential contamination
source, so investigations will take
some time,” Moriarty said.
Water contaminated by human or
animal faecal matter may contain
viruses, bacteria and protozoa,
which can cause gastrointestinal,
respiratory and skin infections.
People should avoid eating shellfish
from the harbour after heavy
rainfall and remove the gut and
liver of fish before cooking.
Noisy vessels not welcome
at port from June next year
Charitable Trust
DRIVER EDUCATION
• By Heidi Slade
NOISY VESSELS will not be
let into Lyttelton from this
time next year due to new
noise specification.
The Lyttelton Port
Company and 12 other
New Zealand ports have
committed to the ship noise
specification.
Container vessels entering
the port after June 1 must
provide a certified noise
measurement protocol,
which would include a noise
label score or confirmation a
reactive silencer is fitted.
The higher the noise label
score, the quieter the ship.
A minimum score of zero is
needed for the vessel to be let
into the port.
LPC has determined a
score less than zero is likely
to generate community noise
concerns. If presenting
a negative score, the
owner of the vessel
would be notified and
given up to six months
to address the issue.
If the noise label
score does not change,
the vessel would not be
allowed in.
Phil de Joux
LPC chief corporate
affairs officer Phil
de Joux said the
initiative was “a leap
forward”.
“Ports have been
working together for
a number of years to
reduce noisy ships in
ports,” de Joux said.
So far this year,
LPC has received
36 noise-related
complaints.
Lyttelton
Community
Association chair
Ken Maynard
said the new
specifications
seemed like a good
solution.
“The port company
Ken
Maynard
is actually trying much
harder in recent years.
They do take some
notice of what the locals
say about noise issues,”
Maynard said.
He said the noise
mainly bothers
residents at night but
was optimistic the
regulations would help.
New principal encourages pupils to
make the most of every opportunity
• By Heidi Slade
TE RAEKURA Redcliffs
School’s new principal Nick
Leith is setting an example
for pupils by giving the role “a
crack”.
When asked what his No. 1
message to pupils was, Leith
said: “You get a lot of opportunities
in life at school. Always look
for the reason that you should
take them, not the reasons that
you shouldn’t.
“Don’t be afraid to give something
a crack, and I suppose
that’s what I’m doing right now.”
Leith took over the role in May
after Rose McInerney, who had
been at the school for 22 years,
resigned.
McInerney played an instrumental
role in the fight to keep
Redcliffs School open and then
oversaw the design and build
of a new site, which the school
moved to in 2020.
“It’s a really high-functioning
school I’ve come into, which is a
real luxury as a new principal,”
Leith said.
“You bring a fresh set of eyes.
“But it is really important to
honour that hard work too.”
Leith came to Redcliffs after
being deputy principal at Casebrook
Intermediate, where he
had taught for 12 years.
“What led me here was it’s a
really exciting opportunity for a
new principal, in the sense that
it’s a wonderful space to learn, a
great community to work in and
work for, and it was a really wellrun
school.
“It’s a great place to go to work
every day, you get a sunrise on
the way to work and a sunset on
the way home. That’s not a bad
deal,” he said.
Leith has taken time to get
to know the pupils and their
families.
“The highlights are the kids,
obviously,” he said.
The pupils wrote Leith letters
about themselves, what they
liked about school and what they
thought could make the school a
better place.
“I’ve learned through reading
those and talking to them – if
they have brothers or sisters here,
and Tawhai
where they like to play. They all
have ideas about what a perfect
school is.”
Leith said the letters told him
younger pupils enjoyed special
days and events, and older pupils
liked spaces to do work independently.
Road patrol has also started
again, which Leith said presents
a good leadership opportunity
for Year 6 pupils.
“Road patrol is a big thing in
our community because it wasn’t
happening,” he said.
“That’s been a good way to
show the community we can
solve any sort of problem.
“It’s great to be a leader in your
school when you’re not the oldest.
And they enjoy a cup of Milo
after a tough shift.
“That’s what kids remember
about school. You remember all
the learning you did, sort of, but
you definitely remember all the
different stuff.”
Leith said he couldn’t recall
the exact moment he knew he
wanted to be a teacher, but knew
he loved people.
“To be honest, I think I
must’ve been told by enough
people that you’re really good
with kids, you’d be a good teacher.
I’m one of those people that
loves learning about stuff and
working with people.
“It’s a tiring job, but it’s not a
job that makes you tired because
it’s bad. There’s a lot of stuff
out there about the challenge
of teaching but actually, you’re
working with people and if you
enjoy working with people that’s
your fundamental reason for
doing it.”
UNSTOPPABLE: Openside flanker Mitch Cox charges into open space in the Wave’s ‘battle of the beaches’ clash. Right – Sumner fullback Terrence
Graham makes a desperate dive for the tryline.
BATTLE OF THE BEACHES
Epic comeback win for the Wave
• By Jaime Cunningham
THE SCRIPT couldn’t have been
better written for the Sumner
Wave’s epic 12-10 comeback win
against New Brighton in the
annual ‘battle of the beaches’
clash on Saturday.
Securing one of eight playoff
spots is now simple for Sumner –
beat Burnside in the last regular
season game on the weekend and
the team have determined their
own destiny.
The Wave were down 7-0 for
majority of the Fulton Shield
match following a first-half try to
New Brighton, who had the star
power of former All Black Ryan
Crotty at centre. A successful
penalty kick then extended New
Brighton’s lead to 10-0 in the
second half.
However, it was a gritty
Sumner side who turned
attacking momentum into points
when it mattered most.
Captain Tom Ziolo managed
to put the Wave on the score
board late in the second half,
before left wing Frankie
Read dotted down with five
minutes to go.
Fullback Terrence Graham
had previously missed his first
conversion attempt, but was able
to calmly slot the second from
a similar spot to take the Falton
Shield. New Brighton had won
the shield last year, 35-17.
It was a fitting win for Sumner,
who celebrated their club day on
Saturday – as well as life member
Scott Robertson’s seventh title as
Crusaders head coach later that
night.
Sumner sit seventh on the
standings with 29 points
following the clash. A win in the
Wave’s last round-robin match
against Burnside would see the
team secure a playoffs spot – a
complete turnaround from last
season’s struggle.
Last year, Sumner only
managed to win one game in
the regular season – against this
week’s opponents, 26-19. This
year, a win against Burnside has
much more riding on it.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
HMS Achilles an object of curiosity
LARGE CROWDS began to
gather at the port of Ōhinehou
Lyttelton on Sunday, November
15, 1936, arriving by motor
vehicle and electric train, with
extra passenger services having
been added to cope with the
expected influx of sightseers.
The object of the crowd’s
curiosity was the latest addition
to the New Zealand Division of
the Royal Navy, the light cruiser
HMS Achilles.
Built by Cammell Laird
at Birkenhead in the United
Kingdom, she was laid down
on June 11, 1931, launched
on September 1, 1932, and
commissioned into the British
Royal Navy on October 10, 1933.
A Leander-class light cruiser,
she displaced 7390 metric tons,
was 169.3m long, with a 17m
beam and a 5.8m draught, and
carried a full complement of 680
crew.
Six Yarrow boilers feeding four
Parsons geared steam turbines
driving four shafts produced
73,280 shaft horsepower
(54,640kW) for a top speed
of 32.5 knots (60 km/h) and a
range of 5730 nautical miles
(10,610km) at a cruising
speed of 13 knots (24 km/h).
The Achilles main armament
consisted of eight 6-inch (152
mm) guns in four twin turrets
fore and aft. This formidable
array was complemented by four
4-inch (102 mm) coastal defence
and heavy anti-aircraft guns, 12
Vickers machine guns, and eight
torpedo tubes.
HMS Achilles was the first
British warship to carry the
catapult-launched Supermarine
Walrus amphibious plane,
later also fitted to the
Royal Australian Navy’s
flagship HMAS Canberra.
Newly designed and built at
Supermarine’s Southampton
UK facility, the walrus was
unique for its time with an allmetal
fuselage, and was used in
reconnaissance, rescue and antisubmarine
duties. Aside from
the walrus, the Achilles would
later make use of a novel radio
controlled aerial drone, the
DH.82 Queen Bee.
After serving with the
British Home Fleet for two
years, in November 1935
HMS Achilles was assigned to
the Royal Navy’s New Zealand
Division.
While RN warships were
traditionally crewed by British
sailors, the formation of the New
Zealand Royal Naval Volunteer
Reserves in 1926 had led to a
growing cadre of New Zealand
born seamen serving with his
Majesty’s naval forces.
A decade later, when Achilles
was recommissioned into the
New Zealand Division on March
31, 1936, a majority of her crew
were proudly New Zealand born
and bred.
As the modern flagship of a
naval service that was well on
its way to becoming the New
Zealand navy, it’s no wonder
she drew ‘huge crowds’ on
her inaugural cruise around
the country. After calling in
at Wellington, she embarked
for her second port of call at
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour,
arriving on November 13, 1936.
The welcome activities began
early with a complement of crew
from Achilles marching in good
order to St Saviour’s Church
in West Lyttelton to attend a
service led by Reverend Malden.
By 1.45pm, the crowd on the
wharf had grown so large the
gangways were opened early to
accommodate the 7500 people
who patiently waited their turn
to inspect ‘their’ cruiser through
to 6pm.
The following morning, 170
ratings, including the Royal
Marines’ band and seven officers,
marched through the streets of
Ōtautahi Christchurch from the
railway station, up Manchester
St to Cathedral Square, where
the salute was taken by Mayor
Beanland. Following this, the
crew were treated to morning tea
at Christ’s College.
The Achilles left Lyttelton
port on November 17, calling
at Akaroa and Dunedin before
sailing up the West Coast and
finally arriving at Auckland on
December 3, 1936.
Just three years later she would
HMS Achilles at Lyttelton wharf, c. 1936-38, Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum ref. 6744.1
join HMS Exeter and Ajax in
a deadly engagement with the
Kriegsmarine heavy cruiser Graf
Spee. The first naval engagement
of World War 2, the famous
Battle of the River Plate,
would lead to the loss of four
of Achilles seamen on December
13, 1939, followed by the selfdestruction
of the Nazi warship
in the harbour of Montevideo.
On October 1, 1941,
the Royal Navy ended its
long association with the
British Crown’s Australasian
Dominions when the Royal
New Zealand Navy was decreed,
and the HMNZS Achilles was
recommissioned once again.
This famous New Zealand
cruiser would go on to see
action in the Pacific war at
Guadalcanal in 1942-43 and
at Okinawa, Japan, in 1945. At
war’s end, Achilles returned to
Royal Navy service in the UK
in September 1946, having only
been on loan to the RNZN,
and was then sold on to the
Indian Navy where she was
commissioned as INS Delhi in
July 1948.
After a further 30 years of
service, she was scrapped in
Te Aratai College:
Matariki 2023
Celebrating what has always been with us, what is now and what is yet to come.
Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori! Wishing us all a
happy Māori New Year!
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula.
Fakaalofa atu. Namaste and Kumusta. Greetings to
everyone at Te Aratai College and our wider Te Aratai
community.
One of the many joys of being in Aotearoa-New Zealand
in 2023 is the continuing movement of our wonderful
country’s development towards being truly Aotearoa-New
Zealand, a bi-cultural nation embracing the diversity of
multi-cultural communities. And not just being in A-NZ but
specifically being part of our Te Aratai College community.
What is Matariki? (Te Wananga o Aotearoa)
The appearance of Matariki in the morning sky in midwinter
marks the Māori New Year, or Te Mātahi o te
Tau. Matariki is the star cluster that is most commonly
known as Pleiades or M45. The arrival of Matariki is a
sign for people to gather, to honour the dead, celebrate
the present and plan for the future. From this comes the
phrase ‘Matariki hunga nui’ - the many people of Matariki.
For early Māori, astronomy was interwoven into all facets
of life. Meticulous observations of the movements of the
stars and planets, the changing position of the sun, the
phases of the moon and the appearance of anomalies
such as comets and meteors were recorded and handed
down from generation to generation as part of Māori oral
tradition. This knowledge was connected to seasonal
activities such as planting and harvesting, the flowering
of plants, the spawning of fish and the natural cycles of
the environment. This astronomical knowledge sits at the
heart of our many regional ecological calendar systems
that guided Māori from season to season.
I use the marker of Matariki to recognise both the
progress brought about through the steadfast endeavours
and struggles of previous generations and the journey
still ahead with all the determination and wisdom that will
be needed for this. However, as a school teacher and
principal, I have immense faith in the present generation
- your children - who inspire me with faith and hope for
the future of our nation. They will shine as, life-long, they
continually build on our school uara, our school values:
Manaakitanga: the process of showing respect,
generosity and care for others
Whanaungatanga: a relationship through shared
experiences and working together which provides
people with a sense of belonging
Rangatiratanga: self-determination and selfmanagement
Tūrangawaewae: where one has the right to stand
What promise our students, your children hold, growing
the seeds of all the good things that they will do over their
coming decades of this 21st century.
Akakoa he iti, he pounamu.
It may be small but it is still pounamu, it is still precious.
Ngā mihi nui – best wishes
Richard Edmundson
Tumuaki-Principal
Aside from the learning that occurs in our different
Learning Areas around our kura, Te Aratai College
also commemorated Matariki with two events on
Thursday. The first was our “Celebration of Learning”
held in Tāhuhu (Y7 and Y8 Learning Area). This was
an opportunity for whānau to visit and ākonga to
share their amazing Matariki installations with their
chosen whetū.
In the evening we hosted our Hui ā-Whānau, which
coincided with Matariki this year. This gave whānau
the opportunity to come together and enjoy games,
goal setting, and culminating with a delicious spread
of BBQ, Parāoa Parai-fry bread, steamed pudding
and ice cream. The main focus of our Hui ā-Whānau
was a chance for whānau and ākonga to reflect on
their learning progress and set goals for the following
year. In a similar way that constellations have guided
us in the past, Matariki is an opportunity for reflection
that can help us plan ahead.
New AED at Te Raekura Redcliffs School
THE SUMNER Ferrymead
Foundation provided Te Raekura
Redcliffs School with the funds
to purchase an automated
external defibrillator – or an
AED as they are commonly
known – after former principal
Rose McInerney heard how a
grandparent at another school
had a cardiac arrest when
dropping off their grandchild
She then contacted the foundation
to see if it could assist in
the purchase of an AED for the
school.
An AED is a portable medical
device used when a person
is suffering a cardiac arrest.
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of
the leading causes of death in
New Zealand and is caused by
an electrical problem – unlike a
heart attack, which is caused by a
blood circulation problem.
The device analyses the heart’s
rhythm and, when required,
delivers an electric shock to help
re-establish an effective rhythm;
this can increase someone’s
survival chances by up to 44 per
cent. They are intended for use
by the general public as the device
tells you exactly what to do.
Principal Nick Leith said they
chose an AED that can be used
on both children and adults at a
flick of a switch.
“We have sited it on the main
building where it’s clearly visible,
whether you enter the school
from the Main Rd entrance
LIFESAVING: Te Raekura Redcliffs School principal Nick Leith and Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation trustee John Christensen with the new AED, located at the school.
or from Beachville Rd. We’d
encourage all residents to
familiarise themselves with its
location, just in case they need to
use it one day.”
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
trustee John Christensen
said this was the second AED
unit the foundation has funded.
“We are all about locals helping
locals, and this is a perfect
example of how we can add value
to our community.
“Like an insurance policy,
you hope it won’t be needed,
but if the need arises it’s good
to know it’s there. Given more
than 2000 New Zealanders are
treated for sudden cardiac arrest
in the community, the risk is
real. There are several apps you
can put on your phone that list
the locations of AEDs closest to
you – it is something we should
all consider doing now rather
than waiting for the emergency
to arise,” he said.
HOW TO USE AN AED
1. Ring 111 and tell
the operator you need
the code to open
the AED unit at your
location
For example, Te
Raekura Redcliffs School,
or quote the number
of the AED (273 in this
case).
Someone should
remain with the patient
and perform CPR
while the AED is being
retrieved.
2. Open the cabinet
and remove both the
AED and the pouch
Take it to the patient
ASAP as minutes count.
3. Open the AED, push
the ON button
It will talk you through
each step of the process
clearly and simply.
The 111 operator will
remain on the phone
until the ambulance
arrives.
Return the AED unit
to the cabinet when no
longer required.
Get out of the cold
and into art this winter.
