At Home & Leisure, we are always impressed and delighted with
the new and renovated homes we have the pleasure and privilege of
profiling. In this issue we feature four new builds and a renovation
project, each one reflecting the personal style of the owners, who
were all thrilled with the results.
We talk to experts in the kitchen and bathroom design sectors,
who fill us in on the latest trends in design and materials being
used in these important areas of the home, and an interior design
specialist guides us through the some of the new developments in
home décor and how they can be personalised to suit any style or
budget.
Wallpapers are enjoying a resurgence, and we find out from Resene

Prestons Road, Christchurch has
seen the development of two subdivisions
over recent years – Prestons
and Prestons Park, both offering quality
residential properties in an attractive
and convenient location.
And such is their satisfaction with the
area, that Grant and Jackie Kitson and
their two daughters have moved from
one to the other.
Grant explains: “We were living
in Prestons for several years, but we
wanted a bigger place. Also, things had
changed in the building industry over
those years, with new products and new
technologies coming on to the market,
so we wanted to take advantage of that
with a new build.
“There was also the idea of having
a dual input into the design between
Jackie and I. When we moved into
Prestons we had just got together.
“So, we started looking at sections in
Prestons Park. We needed a larger one
and there was high demand for sections
in there. We were particular about the
size and the outlook and there were
only two left of this size.”

The Kitsons’ previous property looked
over a lake, while the new one overlooks
the reserve that forms a boundary
between the site and the neighbouring
retirement village. So, with the size and
the outlook meeting their requirements,
they purchased the section.
“Then we got in touch with an
architect to come up with a design we
liked,” Grant says.
“It’s a funny-shaped section, and we
wanted the house to have two wings, to
be north-west facing, and we wanted a
pool.”

Finding the right construction
company wasn’t an issue for the couple.
As general manager of Golden Homes
Canterbury, Grant says they were
obviously the builders of choice.
“We got an architect to draw up a
sketch and Golden Homes worked
with him on the various concepts,
and between them they designed the
house.”
The custom-designed, pavilion-style
home features high ceilings throughout,
which Grant and Jackie are particularly
thrilled with, and it is divided into
two wings. One wing, on the righthand
side of the front entranceway,
accommodates the home’s four double
bedrooms, the master with ensuite
bathroom and a large walk-in wardrobe,
and a family bathroom. One of the
other bedrooms also has a walk-in
wardrobe.
Twin vanities with elevated basins
and twin mirrors feature in the ensuite
bathroom, which also has a double, fully
tiled shower and tiled floors and walls,
while the family bathroom has a freestanding
bath, a single-basin vanity and
a shower.
The other wing includes the openplan
kitchen/dining/living area as well
as a separate TV room, an office space,
and a small powder room off the living
area. There is a separate laundry, and
triple garaging with internal access. The
garage also has an attic space, which, as
Grant says, “keeps the clutter out of the
garage”.
Both the master bedroom and the
TV room overlook the pool, with the
outdoor living space to be completed
with a Kwila deck installed outside the
living area, and tiles to be laid around
the pool. The driveway has been laid in
exposed decorative concrete.
The open, spacious feel of the home
is accentuated not just by the high
ceilings, but also by the large, almost
floor-to-ceiling windows in the master
bedroom, and in the living area, with
the restful reserve outlook from another
window facing the kitchen and dining
area being a further important and
pleasing element.

The galley-style kitchen area with its sleek white

It’s practical too, with plenty of drawer space,
while the separate butler’s pantry offers additional
storage.
In addition to the unique design of the
home, the other striking aspect is the décor.
Jackie worked with Mooi Design to achieve an
outstanding interior, with stunning wallpapers
from Malcolm Fabrics and stylish light fittings
creating a luxurious ambience.
The home’s exterior walls are clad in Rockcote,
painted white, and the roof is a Hiland tray roof
in a wider than normal profile.
“We chose Rockcote because you can have it in
any colour you want,” Grant says.
The Kitson family enjoy the Prestons Road area
for its nearby restaurants and supermarket, and
there are also schools close by. Between the two
Prestons Rd subdivisions, Golden Homes have
built 200-plus homes, Grant says, and thousands
of homes across Canterbury over the last 27 years.
“We are a group housing company, and we build
everything from first homes to architecturally
designed homes, from 120sqm to 450sqm homes.
All our project managers are Licensed Building
Practitioners, so our clients can have confidence
in the quality of our workmanship.”
The Kitson family moved into their new home
in May and are thrilled with how it turned out.

Although the light grey-blue on the door and trims in this
living room can’t be seen within the wallpaper design,
it works beautifully. Team Resene Wallpaper Collection

Resene Gothic or focus in on the small touches of deep
green tone with Resene Midnight Moss. Bringing in a dark
paint colour will bring a cocoon-like feel to the space, which

“Choose wallpaper first, paint second,” says Resene
colour consultant Amy Watkins.
“There might be only one wallpaper you fall in love with,
but there are thousands of paint options.”
To that end, you may be wondering which colour in
a patterned wallpaper to focus on when matching a
paint colour – the most dominant colour in the print,
the background colour or the colour the eye naturally
gravitates to?
“This depends on the level of detail within the pattern
as to which part of the wallpaper you pull the paint colour
from,” Amy says.
“For this reason, I always recommend choosing a
wallpaper before finalising the paint colour. If it’s a highly
detailed wallpaper, then I recommend pulling the paint
colour out from the main background colour. If it’s a
wallpaper with a large print or pattern, then you can pull a
colour from the detail to inspire your Resene paint colour.”
For a plainer wallpaper, seek out its accent hues that
match the paint. This will bring out the interest in the
wallpaper and add personality to the room. It can be
more challenging with a plainer wallpaper to select a
complementary paint colour, but it’ll be there; simply place
the wallpaper swatch in a room and glance at it over a few
days until the accent colour becomes apparent.

If your budget or space doesn’t allow for using a jungle-icious wallpaper design
such as Resene Wallpaper Collection 91310 on your entire wall, consider applying

Of course, a paint colour that contrasts strongly with
your chosen wallpaper brings the greatest level of drama.
You can enhance the spacing by drawing out a stronger
colour in the pattern.
A common mistake people make when pairing
wallpaper with paint is not testing out the potential
paint colour on a large scale. It’s best to paint out a large
colour swatch of the paint colour on the wall or use a
Resene A4 drawdown paint swatch to test it.
“It’s important when pairing a paint colour with
wallpaper you look at it in a larger size to get a true
understanding of how the colour will look en masse. If
you make your final decision from a small colour swatch,
you will likely get the wrong depth and hue of the colour
you are after.”

wanted a new home that was unique to them.
A local building company has made their
vision a reality – and the neighbourhood is
ideal, too.

The flourishing township of Darfield,
35kms west of Christchurch, has been
home for Laine and Ashley Barker
for the last 18 years, so when it came
to building a new home for their
retirement, they were keen to stay there,
for the relaxed lifestyle, as well as for
business and family reasons.
While Ashley commutes to
Christchurch where he manages a paint
business, for the last six years Laine
has run a successful accommodation
business in Darfield.
“We had an old house, which we
demolished,” she explains. “Then we
purchased three former retirement villas
and brought them from Christchurch to
place on the site, initially for family then,
when they moved out, for a holiday
accommodation business and it has gone
well.”
The timing was right for planning a
retirement home, too, with the town’s
recently developed sub-division,
Newbrook, being in an ideal location,
and ticking the right boxes for the
couple.
“We bought the section in 2021. It’s a
nice sub-division with quality houses,”
Ashley says, “and we have family living
here too, so the grandchildren are close
by.”
The garage is long enough
to accommodate two of the
couple's classic cars, plus there is
parking space beside it.

When it came to selecting a design for the house, the
couple approached West Melton-based building company
Absolute Homes, which had already built several houses in
the Newbrook sub-division.
“It’s a smaller, local building company and we like to
support local businesses,” Laine says.
The couple had a meeting with owner Chris Cawthray,
and after looking through several concept designs, they
started with a rough concept that appealed to them. The
brief was for a three-bedroom home with open-plan living
that was simple in design, while at the same time offering
something unique.
“We didn’t want the cookie-cutter type of design, we
wanted something that stood out,” Ashley explains. “We
also wanted it to be on one level for easy access.”
Throughout the process from design to construction they
had a clear picture of what they wanted and Chris and
project manager James Bowden were more than happy to
accommodate them.
“The communication we had with them was fantastic. We
had exactly in our head every final detail and it came out
exactly as we wanted,” Ashley says.
“These are genuine people who want to do their best for
you. If there was ever a problem, they’d say ‘we’ll make
it right.’ And they stuck to the fixed price contract, too.
If we were to build again, we would definitely build with
Absolute Homes.”
From the exterior design to the interior décor, this
property is all about clean lines and cool simplicity.
Designed to suit the site, the house sits lengthwise, facing
north-west, and is laid out in thirds: in front, the double
garage, which is longer than usual to accommodate two of
the classic cars the couple collects, the open-plan kitchen
and living area in the middle, and the three bedrooms and
family bathroom at the other end. The master bedroom
includes an ensuite bathroom.
The exterior cladding of the home is a combination of
white Resene Rockcote and contrasting Axon board panels
tinted to look like timber, while the mono-pitch roof is
made from a single sheet of five-ribbed Colorsteel.
Extending from the roof, a canopy provides shelter and
shade for outdoor living and entertaining and the plan is
to have a deck installed right across the outside area, which
will define it, Ashley says.
Inside, in the living space, stacked glass doors, almost the
width of the room, open to the outside creating indooroutdoor
flow, while the master bedroom also has wide glass
doors opening to the outside.

Retro-style bar stools
add a mid-century vibe
to the breakfast bar.
Minimalist style and practicality are the
keynotes of the kitchen space, with its island
breakfast bar, stone benchtops, and a white tile
splash-back.
As a collector of classic American cars from
the 1950s and ‘60s, an era he has an affinity
with, Ashley wanted to incorporate relevant
features into the decor, with the stools at the
breakfast bar being reminiscent of a midcentury
American diner.
A retro-style lamp in the living space
continues the theme, while the ‘island kauri’
divider separating the entrance area from the
living space adds visual interest and provides
privacy.
The butler’s pantry is perhaps Laine’s
favourite feature, as it allows her to keep small
appliances and other kitchen paraphernalia
out of sight, and both the Barkers enjoy the
plentiful storage around the house.
Three double bedrooms – the master with
walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom, and a
family bathroom featuring a stand-alone bath
complete the home. Both bathrooms feature
crisp, white fittings, and beautiful tiles on the

What are the latest trends in bathroom design?
Bathroom renovation trends in 2023 are moving
toward consolidation and neutral colour palletes.
For showers, we typically install wall ‘niches’. Freestanding
bathtubs, wall-hung vanities and simple
tiled backsplashes are also strongly featured now.
We are consolidating toilet rooms and small, pokey
bathrooms by removing toilet walls, closing off the
toilet door and utilising the resulting square room to
maximise the space and get more use out of it.
What materials are being used for today's
bathrooms?
For vanities and shelving we are using natural wood,
tiles are the most common flooring we install and
tiled shower walls are very popular, too. Frameless
glass showers are far and away the most selected by
our clients, being 90 per cent of what we install.

When it comes to colour, are neutrals the
way to go, or can brighter colours work in
these smaller spaces?
Neutrals are definitely the way to go. We
provide colour swatches in the light grey to
white colour palettes. The rest of the room
always comes together when the wall and
ceiling colours don't overpower the materials
throughout the room.
What about wallpapers?
We don’t encourage using wallpaper in main
bathrooms or ensuites. We do, however, use
wallpaper in toilet rooms that don’t have
steam from showers or bathtubs, which can
affect wallpaper.

What are the latest
developments in taps and
shower fittings?
Taps and shower fittings
change every few years but
truthfully, there isn't a whole lot
of difference in taps from this
year versus three to five years
ago. One noticeable trend in
bathrooms and ensuites is the use
of black tapware and shower rails.
We are curious to see if this will
be a trend that is specific to this
period in time and become dated
in the next five to 10 years. That
is yet to be seen but could be a
possibility.

Are wet bathrooms popular, or do people
prefer a separate shower?
Separate showers are more popular with
renovated bathrooms as wet rooms require
building consents. We prefer tiled shower
trays to offer the full floor tile look without
the need to obtain a building consent.
We are currently doing a modified wet
room for a handicapped client and we love
helping people purpose-build bathrooms
that help better their lives.
How can the bathroom design and decor
complement the rest of the home?
Aside from a bathroom's functionality,
the aesthetic look of the bathroom can
complement the rest of the house by
integrating the same flooring into the
entryway and additional ensuite or toilet.
In a lot of homes we renovate, the separate
toilet room is often a feature room with
accent lighting, wallpaper, wall treatment
with panelling and in-wall toilets.

St Martins couple Leigh Bougen and
Darrell Olsen and their three children
had been living in their home for some
13 years when it came time to make a
decision about upgrading. As Darrell
explains it: “We had three choices – to
leave it as it was, to do it up to sell or to
invest more money and do it up for us
to stay in. When we realised how much
it would cost to do a full renovation, we
decided to do that and stay.”
The key areas the couple wanted
to focus on for renovation were
the kitchen, the laundry, the family
bathroom and the ensuite bathroom, so
they needed to find a building company
that would work with them to achieve
what they wanted.
“We went to the Home Show, and
we met the people from Build Right
Homes,” Leigh says.
“They were super-friendly and
approachable. That first impression is all
it takes.”
While the couple obtained quotes
from other building companies as well,
they went with Build Right Homes,
not only because they had a positive
experience with them at the show, but
also because the family was able to stay
in their home while the work was being
done.
“The other companies wanted us to
move out while they did the work, and
that would have meant paying rent
somewhere,” Darrell says.
Work started in May last year, with
kitchen enlargement being an important
part of the project for the family.
“The kids were getting older, and it was
getting a bit crowded in there,” Darrell
says.

In order to make the kitchen space more suited to
their changing needs, the size of the adjacent laundry
room was reduced.
“That was originally a mud room, then as our
laundry it was bigger than necessary,” Leigh says.
“It was about three times bigger – a massive waste of
space,” Darrell adds.
Now as a smaller but fully functional room, it
provides plenty of bench and cupboard space, along
with a nifty hideaway laundry basket. A tiled splashback
adds both style and practicality.
The additional space created in the kitchen, made
room for a large cupboard/working area, with spacesaving
doors that slide completely out of the way
when opened.
“This has given us much more freedom to work
around each other,” Darrell explains. “It’s not so
constricted.”
A bench that previously stood parallel to the
adjacent dining area has been replaced with a central
island bench that houses the sink and dishwasher, as
well as providing a casual dining option.

The other original bench under the window has been
upgraded and now includes the stove top with extractor
fan and extra storage and workspace, with the same smart,
white tile splash-back as in the laundry.
The kitchen design was created by Bates Joinery, who
were “amazing to work with”, Leigh says, and overall, the
style is one of fresh, practical minimalism.
At the suggestion of Build Right Homes, the doorway
between the hall and the kitchen was widened, adding to
the sense of space in the kitchen, and as Darrell says, “The
two things together – it just works.”
The bathroom renovation process involved enlarging
the main bathroom and reducing the size of the existing
ensuite, with Build Right offering design suggestions
for the main bathroom. The outdated shub was removed
and a bath installed, along with a large 1.2m x 1.2m tiled
shower cabinet, while the floor and bath surround were
also tiled.
A new shower was installed in the ensuite and both
bathrooms had new vanities fitted. In fact, the two spaces
mirror each other in terms of style and fittings, and Leigh
and Darrrell are thrilled with the results.

An existing small separate toilet room has also been
upgraded with tiles and the addition of a small hand basin.
The whole project was completed just before Christmas
last year. As Darrell explains, “It took longer than expected
because of Covid issues and also a shortage of supplies.”
And while it was quite a stressful time for the family
living with the renovations going on, they are delighted
with the outcome.
“Build Right were fantastic to work with,” Darrell
says. “There was never a problem, and they were all very
respectful. We were happy with all the sub-contractors.”

Just 20 minutes from central Christchurch, TSG was,
until relatively recently, a flat, barren piece of land that
had been a pony paddock for the owners’ daughters.
Around 2009, while enjoying a glass of wine at a
neighbour’s one evening, Peter Joyce, a now retired
professor of psychiatry and lifelong avid cricket and rugby
man, decided he would start planting natives and see
where things led. His wife, Annabel Menzies-Joyce, a cast
glass artist with a diploma in landscape architecture and a
deeply ingrained love of the land, insisted that before he
got carried away, he needed a plan.
For Peter, that plan was to plant what should be there –
indeed what would have been there 1000 years ago – and
what could be still be there in another 1000 years’ time: a
podocarp forest comprising kahikatea, totara, matai, and
other native trees.
Since autumn 2010, the couple has planted more than
8000 native trees and shrubs, including rare or threatened
plants native to Canterbury, at the same time building up
an impressive permanent collection of sculptures.

This once overgrazed one-hectare plot is now a thriving
sanctuary attracting native birds, ecologists, art lovers, and
property owners with aspirations to regenerate their own
land. TSG is recognised as a Te Ara Kākāriki green dot: a
project to identify and establish a corridor of native plantings
and build community awareness around biodiversity.
In addition to enhancing native biodiversity, their mission
is to support contemporary sculpture practice, which they do
through annual exhibitions showcasing work for sale by some
of New Zealand’s foremost sculptors and emerging artists.
They have just celebrated their 10th anniversary and
published a beautiful book full of inspiring images
recounting TSG’s origins and providing engaging and
accessible detail around native biodiversity, making it an
attractive handbook for anyone thinking about native
planting.

Curator Melissa Reimer says the sculptures selected for the annual exhibition and the collection
are as diverse as the landscape they inhabit. From figurative works in bronze to abstract works in
steel, the sculptures celebrate universal themes around our impact on the planet and use of natural
resources, especially water; human-animal relationships; the transitory nature of life; and our sense
of place.
The garden is open by appointment throughout the year with many people choosing to visit both
in spring, when the native clematis flowers, and in autumn for the annual exhibition, which draws
more than 2000 visitors over the first three weekends in March. Whenever you choose to visit you
will be in the company of friendly fantails and, if you are lucky, you will spot the kotare – the sacred
kingfisher too.

A stylish new home on Richmond Hill
offers outstanding sea views, outdoor
action and the all-important energy
efficiency the owners were looking for.

It wasn’t far to move from their
previous home on Richmond Hill to
their brand-new property – just about
50 metres, which was lucky, because for
owners John and Marjorie this hillside
area of Christchurch, with its stunning
views over Sumner Bay, was where they
wanted to stay.
The opportunities to have an active
lifestyle – walking, cycling, running –
were also why the couple enjoyed living
there. Although, as they explain, initially
they were not keen on the new site itself.
“The site had never been built on,”
John says, “but when the owner decided
to sell, we weren’t interested in buying
it.”
However, after some friendly to and
fro with a neighbour as to who would
buy the section, John and Marjorie
made the decision, and purchased it in
2012.
The following year, they had plans
drawn up by an architectural design
company for a home to be built on the
site, but it would be some time before
work could start. The couple’s former
property had been damaged in the
Christchurch earthquakes, and after
insurance issues over a retaining wall
dragged on for several years, they were
finally paid out and sold it ‘as is where
is’.

By that time the situation with the original design
company had changed, so they needed to find a builder
that would construct the house to the original plan.
“We were drawn to Whitehouse Builders because
they specialised in energy-efficient homes,” says John.
Work started in January 2020 with the foundations
being put in place, a task that proved quite complex on
the steep site. As John explains, Whitehouse Builders
had to excavate to find the hard rock, which they then
drilled into for half a metre so the foundations could be
anchored to the hard rock.
“There were different levels they had to go down into
and there were different types of rock as well, so it was
time-consuming. During this time there were a lot of
big trucks coming and going, but from the start, and
right throughout the construction, the workers were all
very efficient and well organised. They worked hard –
they had a very good work ethic.
“In terms of the design, lots of things were revealed
during the construction that needed adjusting, and the
builders explained it all to us. They were very helpful,
and living so close, we could visit the site and discuss
things with them,” the couple says.
Designed to maximise the sea views, the threebedroom,
three-bathroom home, with additional study
and workshop, sits elegantly on its hillside site, offering
John and Marjorie not only the splendour of the views,
but a comfortable living environment all year round,
too.
“This is achieved in several ways,” says John. “To start
with, the outside walls of the house are enclosed by
two membranes, an inner and outer, which controls
humidity and prevents mould and mildew from
forming. It’s a German product, and I felt this was
definitely the way to go.”
In addition, a ducted system provides heating and
cooling throughout the home, while the large windows
in the living space are double-glazed and have argon
gas insulation. Adjustable blinds installed within the
argon space control solar heating, while avoiding
the need for cleaning the blind slats. The remaining
windows in the home are all triple-glazed.

Both levels of the home have a 140mm-thick
wooden frame filled with earthwool insulation
and are clad with Hebel panels. Also, the upper
level has a Hebel panel floor.
“It doesn’t quite meet the air leakage criteria
for a ‘passive’ house because of the very large
doors and windows,” John points out, “but it is
highly energy efficient.”
The house is built on two levels. The upper
level is accessed through the front entrance
and through the garage and internal stairs. The
front entrance leads into a hallway from where
a doorway opens into the light, airy, openplan
kitchen/living space. Here, the smart
black-and-white decor is enlivened with pops
of yellow, with artworks and large pot plants
providing striking focal points.
In the living area, extensive book shelving,
which the couple designed, accommodates
their book collection, with doors covering the
TV when not in use.
Large doors open from the dining area
onto a terrace, offering plenty of space for
outdoor living and entertaining, while the
glass balustrade ensures the sea views are not
obstructed.
One bedroom and a bathroom are also on
this upper level, with the other two bedrooms
and bathrooms and the study being on the
lower level.
In the kitchen/dining area, engineered oak
flooring creates a natural ambience, with wool
carpet used elsewhere in the home. Tiled walls
in one of the bathrooms feature a striking wave
pattern, which the owners find very appealing.
White walls in most of the rooms provide
a neutral backdrop for the many artworks
John and Marjorie have collected, while in the
downstairs bedrooms colour has been used to
partly moderate glare – one painted in soft
aqua, the other in a pale olive green.
While there is still landscaping to be done,
a special feature of the outdoor area is the
swimmable spa. Located below the terrace, it
offers the remarkable sea views users can enjoy
while relaxing in the warm spa water.
The house was completed in August 2022
and John and Marjorie are thrilled with how
it turned out and with the workmanship and
professionalism of Whitehouse Builders. It has
everything they wanted for their retirement
lifestyle, and with the proximity to Sumner
Village as a bonus, they wouldn’t want to live
anywhere else.

What are the latest trends for new and
renovated kitchens?
Visual elements such as curves, texture,

embedded in kitchen design trends for 2023.
Functional elements cementing their place

What is the key feature of a kitchen that

Is there a dominant colour coming through or
are people making their own choices?
The majority of clients are still very much led by
what is on trend. 2023 kitchen trends are leaning
towards lighter and brighter spaces through the
use of earthy neutrals, with injections of natural
timber finishes and calming pastel hues.
Are there any recent developments in cabinetry
materials and styles?
Mixed materials and textural elements are
continuing to gain traction in the kitchen design
world. We are seeing a huge increase in fluted,
grooved, and slatted cabinetry elements. Whether
it be the resurgence of fluted glass, the addition
of sophisticated scalloped cabinet fronts or the
evolution of the timeless slatted detail, kitchen
designers are continually developing new ways to
incorporate these elements into new kitchens.
What about bench tops?
With a large focus on eco, non-toxic surfaces
dominating the industry at present, clients are
becoming more considered about the materials
they are investing in. Raw, organic, and marbled
bench top finishes seem to be the front runners in
terms of colour palette.

Fish Kiev
A tasty fish dish the family
will enjoy on a chilly
winter’s night. Or delight
your guests with a Fish
Kiev entrée at your next
dinner party.
Ingredients
8 thin fish fillets - e.g. sole
250gm tomatoes
2 tbsp chopped parsley
1 ½ cups dried breadcrumbs
250gm butter
1 leek
125gm mushrooms
2 eggs salt & pepper
Flour for coating
Instructions
• Skin fish fillets if necessary.
• Prepare filling by melting 60gm butter in a frypan, add peeled and
finely chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, and finely sliced leek.
• Sauté for 3 minutes until vegetables are just tender, season with salt
and pepper and cool.
• Beat remaining butter until soft and creamy, add vegetable mixture
and parsley and mix well.
• Spread the mixture onto each fish fillet. Roll up firmly and trim
edge with a sharp knife.
• Coat each roll in flour, then beaten egg, breadcrumbs and egg
again, breadcrumbs again.
• Wrap each kiev separately in foil or cling wrap and refrigerate to
set butter and coating.
• Fry in deep oil until golden.
Serves 8 for an entrée or 4 for a main course.

What are the latest trends and features in home interior
design - colours, textures, accessories?
Neutral palettes and earthy tones such as ox blood and
terracotta red, rust and caramel are on trend now, also
tactile fabric weaves, mosaic and terrazzo. Metals are still
strong, especially bronze and brass. Resin is largely being
explored to create interesting furniture pieces and accessories.
Monochromatic rooms where the trim and ceilings match
the walls are a strong feature coming through, too. And
where glass is being used, it’s in tinted shades of bronze and
champagne.
How can these trends be individualised to suit personal
taste and lifestyle?
Much like the fashion industry where the garments we see
on the runway don't always transition in their entirety to
street wear, these high-fashion trends can be individualised
to suit personal taste and style by introducing the elements
as accessories into your existing decor.

What do you consider to be the most
important aspect when designing a
home's decor?
For me, it’s that the elements
specifically reflect the client’s
personality and lifestyle and the
outcome is a space in which the
person feels most at ease and wants to
share with friends and family.
Taking budget into consideration,
what compromises can be made to
keep costs down but still achieve the
desired result?
Alternative material choices such
as the development of laminates
including faux wood products,
namely the timberland finishes
for prime panels have come a long
way, and while we always strive for
honesty in materials, with build costs

Go for plumbing fixtures that have good warranties -
especially if you are opting for coloured metals. Check the
warranty not just on the mechanism but also on the finish.
What changes can be made to existing decor to bring it up

A fitting
first home
They had a design in mind, so finding it in a house
and land package from a local builder worked out
perfectly for a young couple in Prebbleton.

The home is divided into two separate
wings with the living space on one side
and bedrooms and bathrooms on the
other.
When Amy and Gavin Jones decided
to buy their first home, the original
plan was to find a section and have
a new home built on it. But, as Amy
explains, they struggled to find land
anywhere, so the alternative was to go
for a house and land package.
“We started looking at house and land
packages on TradeMe, and we really
liked the look of one of the Freedom
Built designs. We had talked about
what type of design we would like
and this one was pretty much what we
wanted, so we approached them.
“They were really lovely to deal with.
We had a lot of questions and we sent
them many emails, which they always
answered quickly.
“We also liked the fact that they were
a local company. They build a lot of
houses in the Selwyn district so it was
good to have a local builder that knew
the area. The whole process went very
smoothly – they were very on to it.”
Amy says at the time there was a
shortage of building supplies, with
many people experiencing long waiting
times, but for them, there were no such
issues.
“We were super surprised that there
were no delays, and that really stood
out for us. We were having cedar
cladding and no one could get it, but
Freedom Built had already ordered it so
we didn’t have to wait.”

What the young couple particularly liked about
the design they chose was the open-plan style,
and that the house itself was split into two wings.
As Amy describes it: “The lounge, kitchen and
dining areas are on one side, and then you go across
the entranceway in the middle to the other side,
which has the three double bedrooms. The way it is
designed means you can shut off the bedrooms to
keep them quiet.”
The three bedrooms feature full-length windows
and built-in wardrobes, while the ensuite in the
master bedroom is appointed with a double tiled
shower. There is also a family bathroom, which
includes a bath.
“That was a big tick for us,” Amy says.
A highlight of the kitchen is the engineered
stone benchtop, while the crisp white walls and
ceiling, offset by warm timber-toned accents, keeps
the decor fresh and simple, with white repeated
throughout the home, including in the bathroom
fittings.

The open-plan kitchen/
dining/living area was
something that appealed
to the new owners when
choosing the design.
“The chance to have a walk-in pantry also
ticked a big box for me,” Amy adds.
The floor-to-ceiling window in the
entranceway “makes quite a statement”, and
this is complemented by three more large
windows along the entranceway, all of which
create a light, airy environment. There is also
a window under the TV.
“It’s quite a cool use of windows, and it
makes the place feel bigger than it is,” Amy
says.
The living area and the master bedroom
feature sliding stacker doors opening to
exposed aggregate patios, creating the allimportant
indoor-outdoor flow on both sides
of the house. The couple have added a deck
linking the two patios, which extends their
outdoor living space. They also wanted to
have an area outside that was big enough for
children to play, but not too big for them to
manage, which has been achieved with lowcare
plantings complemented by slate fencing.
With its cedar and plaster exterior, the
property presents as both contemporary and
timeless. Located in the Previlles sub-division
in Prebbleton, it is ideal for a young family,
and since they moved in at the end of 2021
it has proved the perfect first home for Amy
and Gavin and their infant son Harry.

Selecting the right size heating system is crucial to ensure
optimal performance and energy efficiency, the Clyne &
Bennie spokesperson advises. A system that is too small
may struggle to adequately heat your space, while one that
is too large may consume unnecessary energy and lead to
inefficiencies.
For home owners and renovators not just wanting a clean
form of home heating, but also the cosy ambience a fire
offers, there are a wide range of pellet burners and wood
burners on the market.
For wood burners, it is important to ensure you are burning
appropriate fuels, ECan advises. Dry firewood, sourced from
a reputable wood merchant, is the most appropriate fuel for
use in wood burners. Dry wood has a lower moisture content
than wet wood and when burned it produces less smoke

vital that homeowners do all they can to protect their homes

Ray van Hamelsveld of Christchurch Security Services Ltd
says the important initial step is to have full home insurance.
Along with that, the first line of defence is a security alarm
system. He recommends installing any mainstream security
alarm system, for example the Bosch system, to protect your
home. Alarms can be monitored via an app on your cell
phone or by professional monitoring, and you will need an
internet to connect to their alarm.
“Cost-wise, the average cost for a three-sensor alarm system
installed would be about $977.50,” Ray says.

This would include alarm panel, keypad, ire sensors,
external siren, internal siren, 7.0 amp back-up battery,
cable and labour – all inclusive of GST.
“Deadlocks on front and back doors, and window locks
are also a big help,” he says.
Another valuable security tool is security lighting,
which Ray says is important both for personal safety and
as a deterrent against burglars. Camera systems are also
useful for capturing any unlawful activity around your
property.
Ray also advises getting to know your neighbours, who
can keep an eye out if you are away from the home, but
he stresses, only if they are trustworthy.
If the unfortunate happens and you do experience
a burglary, having your name and address etched on
valuable items or marking them with an invisible marker
pen will enable them to be traced.

Locked gates and secure fencing will also help to protect
your property from intruders, Ray advises. It is also
important to keep trees and shrubs pruned so there is a
clear view out to the street.
Vehicles being stolen or broken into is also becoming
a headache for residents around the city, so Ray advises
security alarms for vehicles or immobilisers are a must,
and don’t leave vehicles out on the street or even up the
driveway as they can get broken into.
If vehicles do need to be parked in the driveway, having
cameras pointing at the driveway covering the vehicles can
help identify anyone interfering with them.
