MILESTONE IN KNOCKOUT FINAL
PHOTO: TONY BRUNT
PHOTOGRAPHY
When any player
reaches the 100-
game mark for a
club, it’s a feat in
itself. But when
Sumner Wave
captain Tom
Ziolo runs onto
the field against
New Brighton
on Saturday, the
implications of
the Metro Premier
elimination
final are likely
to overshadow
his major
milestone. Jaime
Cunningham
Boat shed’s $150k price
tag too much for bidders
• By Heidi Slade
A DUVAUCHELLE boatshed has
failed to sell at auction after the
bidding stopped at $150,000.
The boatshed’s owners wanted
more, and are open to offers
until the next sale strategy is
determined.
The boatshed, located next
to 11 others on Onawe Flat
Rd, is well-lined and has basic
bench and storage areas. Water
is collected via the roof – but
the shed has no bathroom or
bedroom. The current owners
bought the property in 2008 and
now live in Auckland. They had
not been to the boatshed in 10
years so decided to sell it.
Youths identified after smash and grab
• By Daniel Alvey
POLICE HAVE identified
“four youths of interest”
involved in a smash and
grab on a convenience
store.
It is the first major
development in the investigation
since the youths
smashed their way into
the Wakefield Ave Sumner
MetroMart on May 13,
stealing mostly vaping
products.
Three youths had been
caught on the store’s CCTV
using a hammer to smash
the glass storefront, with a
fourth waiting in a car out
the front of the shop.
Police would not say
yesterday whether the
youths had been spoken to,
or if any charges had been
laid.
During the early days of
the investigation, the shop’s
owner and Retail NZ chief
executive Greg Hanford
Davidson resigns
as community
board chair
• By Heidi Slade
TE PĀTAKA o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board members are set to vote in
a new chair.
Reuben Davidson will step
down as the board’s
leader at a meeting on
Monday and a new
chair will be elected.
Davidson will stay
on as a board member
but would resign before
the general election on
October 14 when he
will stand for Labour in
the Christchurch East
electorate.
Davidson said
yesterday he has
still not decided on
a date to resign. His
departure will trigger a byelection.
He has previously said he plans
to resign close to the general
election to minimise the cost to
ratepayers of the by-election.
City council electoral officer Jo
Daly told Bay Harbour News the
Reuben Davidson
by-election to fill the Lyttelton
Subdivision seat would cost about
$35,000.
Davidson said he will continue
to represent the Lyttelton
Subdivision until he resigns.
“I’m still really committed
to serving that
community.”
Community board
member Tyrone Fields
is ineligible for the
chair role because he
is the Banks Peninsula
Ward city councillor.
The new board chair
will be either deputy
chair Nigel Harrison,
board member for the
Akaroa Subdivision,
Cathy Lum-Webb,
member for the
Lyttelton Subdivision, Howard
Needham member for the Mt
Herbert Subdivision, Luana
Swindells also a member for the
Mt Herbert Subdivision, Lyn
Leslie board member for the
Wairewa Subdivision, or Asif
Hussain, board member for the
Akaroa Subdivision.
It is the second boatshed in the
LYTTELTON
Clothes drying too close
fire at a Lyttelton house
about 6.30pm on Friday.
The blaze was extinguished by
the owner of the house before
firefighters had arrived. No
one was injured and there was
no structural damage to the
property.
– but they were “not going to
own it” for $150,000.
Another auction date has not
been set, but the owners remain
open to offers.
Mangels said the boatshed
would be a “valuable tack-on”
for a buyer who already has an
existing holiday home on Banks
Vibrant arts festival lights up town
• By Heidi Slade
THE LYTTELTON Arts Festival
is in full swing, with many acts
yet to come before the grand
finale on Sunday night.
“Epic”, “amazing” and “stunning”
are some of the superlatives
being thrown around about
the festival, which is in its second
year.
Organiser Skye Broger said
ticket sales were over the thousand
mark and she was looking
forward to the remaining acts.
The festival began on Friday
with a dance party/parade,
followed by acts like Mantra over
the weekend, which was a mix
of puppets and contemporary
dance.
Talent show, Stars in Their
Eyes, where contestants embody
iconic musicians, was “a concert
for all the old favourites”. Acts
performed as Olivia Newton-John,
Blondie, and Billie Joe
Armstrong from Green Day.
But the eclectic selection of entertainment
is not over until its
final act, Going Bush, on Sunday
night.
The Kate Bush tribute will see
singer Charlotte Crone and her
band take on Bush’s well-known
songs, like Wuthering Heights, in
a mixed-media production.
Broberg said she is also excited
to see Von Leon’s Candyland
performance, typically a part
cabaret, part storytelling play for
adults.
Brogerg said Leon will also
take on a kids’ performance,
telling a story of the Matariki
stars being stolen.
“There’s a legacy in Lyttelton of
these Candyland shows that Von
Leon has been putting on for a
decade now,” she said.
“It’s almost like a play, but it’s
also a variety show, but he also
does live music.”
Building a life in Lyttelton after
Oleksandr Stoliarov fled Russian-occupied
Kherson in southern Ukraine last year. Now
he is settling into a new life with his son.
Dylan Smits reports
A UKRAINIAN university
teacher who lived through
the Russian occupation of his
city has found a new home in
Lyttelton.
Oleksandr Stoliarov (right), a
69-year-old university teacher,
was going about his normal life
until Russian troops occupied
the city of Kherson.
With a pre-war population of
280,000, the port city’s capture
was a significant victory for
Russia.
Stoliarov now lives with his
son Max Stoliarov in Lyttelton.
Stoliarov said his life in Kherson
before the occupation “was very
good”.
“But when the war started,
living in Kherson became
impossible.”
Cut off from supply chains,
food and medicine shortages
became the norm in the city.
“People were really struggling
to find specialist medicine. There
were long queues everywhere,”
Stoliarov said.
Before the troops rolled in, he
had seen and heard the rumours
Russia was planning to invade
Kherson but did not truly believe
them. The Russians faced
little military resistance in the
city after the Ukrainian forces
retreated to more defendable
territory. They had occupied it
a week after the war started on
March 1 last
year.
The
Russians
immediately
took control of
the media and
internet, Stoliarov
said.
“Russia started
to suppress
all the information
sources
and provide
only their
point of view
on everything.
“So if you
wanted to get
the real news,
you had to be
a bit sneaky.”
The night
the Russian
convoys entered PHOTOS: DYLAN SMITS
the city, a group of civilians
armed with molotov cocktails
tried to ambush them.
Stoliarov said the locals waited
behind some trees in a park.
They aimed to take the soldiers
by surprise in the dark and burn
their vehicles.
But the Russians could see
them through their night-vision.
“They just killed them all in
that park, without people even
having a chance to do
anything.
There
was 18
people
there.
They
didn’t
allow
anyone
to take
bodies.
They
had to
lie there
for
weeks.
They
use it as
a sign of
threatening
others
of what
will
happen if you resist,” Stoliarov
said.
Yet the people of Kherson did
resist, he said.
The Russian presence within
the city was light for the first two
months of the occupation.
Stoliarov said his daily routine
at the university continued,
while the Russian soldiers
mainly stuck to the outskirts of
the city.
Pro-Ukrainian activists seized
the opportunity and organised
peaceful street protests against
the occupation. Stoliarov
watched the protests online
through street cameras.
A small contingent of Russian
soldiers stood in the main
square as protestors shouted
pro-Ukrainian slogans.
Stoliarov said after the Ukrainian
revolution in 2014 – which
culminated in the ousting of
elected President Viktor Yanukovych
and the pro-Russian
government – Ukrainians “chose
the European way”.
He said the people of Kherson
do not want to join Russia.
“Russia has just been ripped
back to Soviet times in all
aspects of their lives.”
Their protests continued until
May last year when the Russians
tightened their grip on the city.
escaping war-ravaged Ukraine
“They harshly resolved one
of the protests using guns and
grenades,” Stoliarov said.
The Russians started arresting
political activists, police officers
and anyone who had worked for
the government.
“Their destinies are unknown.
Many of them are still missing.”
The Russians introduced
an 8pm to 6am curfew and
constructed posts throughout
Kherson which were manned by
soldiers.
Stoliarov hoped the Ukrainian
troops would retake the city
quickly. But as the months
dragged on, he decided to come
to New Zealand.
He left in September. By then
the conditions in the city had
worsened significantly since the
crackdown.
“They took control over
all aspects of city life. Most
of the city services had been
paralysed.”
The occupying authorities
closed banks and ATMs and
forced people to pay for goods in
Russian rubles.
Stoliarov said this was a big
factor in his decision to leave.
“You couldn’t get Ukrainian
currency and people didn’t want
to use rubles. So basically you’re
in a situation of limbo where
there are rubles but no one is
using them.”
By the time Stoliarov left
Kherson, there was only one
civilian crossing point left on the
southern frontline.
He travelled more than 200km
to reach the border crossing
and waited in the queue for four
days.
“All those people staying in
the queue, it was scorching hot.
When people crossed into the
grey zone, they basically left the
column of civilian cars to go
through then Russians just shell
them,” Stoliarov said.
After the ordeal, he crossed
Stoliarov’s son applied
for a visa which grants
New Zealand residents’
Ukrainian family members a
two-year stay.
Ukrainian troops eventually
liberated Kherson in November.
Stoliarov said it was a “happy
moment, but quickly it became
very sore because the situation
deteriorated dramatically”.
He said Russian shelling made
it “nearly impossible for people
to stay”in the city.
Stoliarov believes the Russians
PHOTO: GETTY
are punishing Kherson because
the city opposed occupation.
“The Russians, when they
came into Kherson, they
expected huge support. But what
they saw in fact was the whole
population was against them.”
Stoliarov said Christchurch is
a “perfect city” a he can now lead
a “peaceful life”.
But the after-effects of war
remain. Stoliarov said when he
hears “loud noises
coming from the port, when
a container is dropped or fire
sirens go off, it always triggers
feelings of shelling or airstrikes”.
He is “still exploring the
city, trying to walk in different
directions each time and see new
places”.
He has been taking english
classes and said his teacher is
seeing improvement.
He said one of the biggest
surprises in New Zealand is
seeing people wear shorts during
winter.
Stoliarov is not sure when or if
he will return to Ukraine.
He said the situation remains
too unpredictable to at the
moment.
Wavewalker: Breaking Free
by Suzanne Heywood
‘A jaw-dropping and thrilling real-life adventure on the high
seas for a girl who just craved normality and finally found her
way back to it’ SARAH BROWN
Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents
and brother on a three-year voyage around the world. What
followed turned instead into a decade-long way of life, through
storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with little formal schooling. No one
else knew where they were most of the time and no state showed any interest
in what was happening to the children.
Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education
and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing, a survival story
of a child deprived of safety, friendships, schooling and occasionally drinking
water… At seventeen Suzanne earned an interview at Oxford University and
returned to the UK.
Wavewalker is the incredible true story of how the adventure of a lifetime
became one child’s worst nightmare – and how her determination to educate
herself enabled her to escape.
Head On - An All Black’s memoir of
rugby, dementia, and the hidden
cost of success by Carl Hayman, with Dylan
Cleaver
Carl Hayman, All Black #1000, once the most highly prized player in world
rugby and a giant of the game in every sense - someone who was always
respected, even feared. But at the end of seventeen years as a professional
rugby player, the last eight played with the sole aim of setting up his family’s
future, Hayman’s life began to unravel in nightmarish fashion. Head On is
about the pressures on the modern athlete, where physical performance and
commerce collide, and players become victims of their own success.
Exploited then left out in the cold, Hayman is now left counting the hidden
cost of the achievements that would have exceeded any young rugby player’s
wildest dreams. As a relatively young man, still in his early 40s, Hayman
contends with brain degeneration he should only be seeing at the end of
his life, not in his prime. This book is also about how all of us can better
understand how the decisions we make can have unintended consequences,
and how we can better serve our young sporting talent.
The domain in Takamatua
LITTLE AKALOA Reserve
The decision, made by
Old foes meet in elimination final
• By Jaime Cunningham
THE DREAM run for the
Sumner Wave could continue
when they meet New Brighton in
the Metro Premier elimination
final.
It will be just the second time
Sumner have made the play-offs
when they head to Rawhiti Domain
(3pm) in another ‘battle of
the beaches’ clash.
The must-win game will also
be Sumner captain’s Tom Ziolo’s
100th division 1 match for the
team.
Sumner made an epic comeback
to beat New Brighton 12-10
two weeks ago on home turf St
Leonards Square and win the
Falton Shield.
The shield will not be at stake
in Saturday’s match. Sumner
made the elimination final after
a clinical 30-13 victory over
Burnside in the final round robin
game last weekend.
This season has been a
complete turnaround from last
season when the Wave managed
one win in the regular season.
Coach Gareth D’almeida said
he was “really happy” with the
finish to the game after a slow
start.
“It’s been a bit of a trend where
we start a bit slow and then come
back strong,” he said.
“It’s something we’re working
on. But the team has been getting
better each week.”
New Brighton come off a 36-0
win over Shirley last week, and
secured the DCL Shield.
Although the nailbiting win
over New Brighton is still fresh
in the Sumner’s minds, D’almeida
said the Wave were prepared
to come up against any of the 11
teams in the playoffs.
“I think New Brighton will be
a good challenge.”
“We wouldn’t have minded
who we got as the focus was
always getting to the second
round,” he said.
Ziolo who is the halfback but
can fit in almost anywhere in
the backline, has played his way
through Sumner’s senior teams
UNSTOPPABLE: First-five
George Worboys manages
an offload before hitting
the ground.
since leaving St Bede’s College in
2015.
Said D’almeida: “He’s a quintessential
club man.
“To play 100 games for one
club is rare now, and to be doing
it in a big match and as captain
says a lot.
“He’s just a talented player who
can slot in anywhere.”
While Sumner managed to
win the Falton Shield at St Leonards
Square two weeks ago, the
clash will be on New Brighton’s
turf this time around.
“The game is going to be
huge,” D’almeida said.
“Getting our local support
down there will be massive.”
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
The elegant Empire – quenching
LONDON ST has long been
an integral commercial hub of
Ōhinehou Lyttelton, extending to
the Norwich Quay thoroughfare
via the arteries of Canterbury
and Oxford Sts.
A dominant feature of the
streetscape from the first years
of the colonial town were the
successive establishments on
Townsite 31, 9-11 London St.
The first European structure
on the site was “Mr Fairhurst’s
Assembly Rooms” of 1865, also
briefly known as “The Billiard
Room” and “The Shades” (wine
vault and lounge).
Utilised for a variety of entertainment
and civic purposes,
including choral and theatrical
performances, fundraising events
and electoral meetings, such
salutary activities were curtailed
when the building became a
victim of the 1870 Great Fire,
along with most of the rest of the
central town block.
Post fire, in 1871, a two-storey
wooden hotel named the Empire
was built. Its construction
was marred by disagreements
between the Lyttelton Borough
Council surveyor and owner
Joseph Dransfield’s own surveyor
regarding the necessary depth
(18 or 14 inches) and materials
(mortar versus clay) of the foundations.
It appears the council
lacked the authority to stop the
project, although their concerns
were recorded for indemnity
against any failure or accident.
The 1873 photograph clearly
shows one post fire concession
to safety – a brick fire wall is
evident on the eastern side
of the building, intended to
stop conflagration across
neighbouring sites.
Visible in the roadway just
beyond the Empire’s verandah,
(ubiquitous of this era), is one of
a number of public wells around
critical issue.
W Kiddey opened Lyttelton’s
first “dive” bar beneath the
hotel in 1872; however, the
Empire retained its more widely
used name through numerous
ownership and licensee changes
for the rest of its lifespan.
For nearly 30 years from
1885 -1914, the Crown Brewery
Company held ownership, leasing
the building to a succession
of licensees, their distinctive
branding on proud display.
In 1914, requirements by the
Lyttelton Licensing Committee
for structural alterations to be
made prior to licence renewal
may have been behind the
decision taken to rebuild.
After auctioning of chattels,
and demolition, a much grander
two-storey hotel in the then
popular Renaissance style
was built of brick and stone.
Attractive arched ground floor
windows contrasted with those
on the second storey, which
were edged with quoins and
moulded hoods. With substantial
chimneys, a balustraded roof
cornice and similar detailing
below the first floor windows,
the whole created a significant
architectural statement on
London St.
Our 1920s image looking
westward along the street
shows the dominance of the
Empire in a town well served
by drinking establishments;
it is second in stature only to
the Art Deco towers of the
Harbour Light Theatre.
Collett’s Chemist and
Pitcaithly Butchers are its
immediate neighbours; the
bulk of the Empire is mirrored
by that of the War Memorial
in its unlikely (and short-lived)
location in the centre of the
intersection of London and
Oxford Sts.
The mid-century photograph
is of a tractor towing a
load of timber on London St,
with the Empire’s windows
dressed in rows of neatly
laundered net curtains. The
signage suggests on a hot day,
Crown Sparkling Ale was still
the thirst quencher of choice.
Ensuing years saw a continuing
succession of owners and
licensees.
In 2006, a comprehensive
refurbishment was
undertaken. In addition to
providing accommodation
and a popular public bar,
a “general store” fronting
the street sold, amongst
other necessities, famously
enormous ice creams. It
appeared these were especially
popular with Russian seamen,
often seen strolling the main
drag of a winter afternoon
consuming the huge frozen
treats.
The September 4, 2010
earthquake badly damaged the
Empire’s stone facade; it was
solidly braced with a view to
repair, but the more damaging
February 22, 2011 earthquake
necessitated a controlled
demolition of the building.
To date, the site of the
long-serving waterhole is
on the market alongside
neighbouring Collett’s
Corner site. While it awaits
redevelopment it plays host
every Saturday to the Craft
and Treasure market.
Hybrid with luxury and speed
ADDRESSING fluctuating fuel
prices is a battle many households
are facing at present. That has
prompted many buyers to look
at alternative means of propulsion
– the take-up of electric vehicles is
staggering, it’s a market that
is going from strength to strength.
Although it’s not all that
straightforward, supply issues are
playing a part and there are many
buyers who, like me, don’t want to
fully give up fossil fuel and don’t
want to rely solely on sourcing
electricity as a way of travel.
That’s where hybrids come in,
and in-particular plug-in hybrids,
those that can be charged from
home or a designated charge
port and have the benefit of a
petrol engine in the background
so that you can travel in pure EV
mode for some distance and have
traditional four-cylinder power for
longer trips.
There are an ever-increasing
number of plug-in EVs landing in
our market, most of them sport
utility vehicles, and that is what
the market is also demanding.
However, if it’s a sedan you are
after and want to explore the
luxury market, then Mercedes-
Benz may have the car for you –
the C 350 e – it is a plug-in hybrid
with a 2-litre petrol engine. What’s
more, it is built with the true
Mercedes-Benz logic of comfort,
luxury and performance.
Even though it joins the
C-Class series, it lands here in
one specification only that lists at
$111,200. It’s around $6000 and
$23,000 more expensive than its
non-hybrid counterparts, but it
will give you fuel usage benefits
and will travel up to 100km on
purely electric.
According to Mercedes-
Benz the C 350 e will provide a
combined cycle fuel usage average
of 1.5-litre per 100km. That is, of
course, at best possible usage –
the readouts were listing around
7l/100km during my testing time,
which in real-world terms is about
as good as you can expect on a
commute or highway run. At
100km/h the engine sips fuel at
the rate of 5l/100km.
Under the bonnet sits a 2-litre
turbocharged engine. This is
much the same unit that is fitted
to the C 200 and C 300, although
the power outputs are down
significantly to the latter at 150kW
against 190kw and 320Nm against
400Nm. However, when you have
another 95kW and 440Nm from
the electric motor it’s as strong
under the bonnet as it needs to
be. On the subject of figures and
performance, Mercedes-Benz also
claims a 6.1sec to accelerate from a
standstill to 100km/h.
Cleverly, power is directed
ECONOMIC: The Mercedes-Benz C 350 e has an average
combined cycle fuel usage of 1.5-litre per 100km.
MERCEDES-BENZ: The C 350 e may be more expensive than its non-hybrid counterparts
but will travel up to 100km purely on electricity.
through a fairly traditional ninespeed
automatic transmission.
Such are the number of ratios
drive is seamless and smooth, well
the entire driving experience is
smooth, but the point I’m trying to
make as well is that the C 350 e is
little different to drive than any of
its C-Class stablemates.
I took the evaluation car on a
long highway journey, the scenic
route (SH 72) is one of
my favourites and it was
perfect the day I drove to South
Canterbury. Even though the
roads were wet at times, it felt
well attached to the road and
comfortable for a long period at
the wheel.
The C 350 e is stunningly quiet
and civilised and it has impeccable
handling manners. Riding on high
quality 18in Bridgestone Turanza
rubber there is a solid footprint on
the road surface that translates to
a very pointy feel at the steering
wheel. Turn-in is precise and
any body movement over the
suspension can be discounted, at
just 1.4m tall gravitational forces
aren’t high.
All C-Class models in New
• Price – Mercedes-Benz
C 350 e, $111,200
• Dimensions – Length,
4574mm; width, 1876mm;
height, 1664mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
1991cc, 150kW
(+95kW), 320Nm
(+440Nm), nine-speed
automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/
h, 6.1sec
• Fuel usage – 1.5l/100km
Zealand drive through the rear
wheels, and the C 350 e is no
exception. The energy coming
through the gearbox is harnessed
well by the suspension and
independent axle set-up, there’s
never a point where you think rear
end breakaway would develop,
the engineering refinement
contains all of that, along with
the sophisticated electronic safety
components.
The evaluation car was showing
an almost 800km distance to
empty (petrol) when I picked it up.
After 450km I took it back to the
dealership still showing 500km to
empty. That’s just an example of
how thrifty the C 350 e is on
the highway and associated
commute.
If you want to keep the batteries
charged I’m pleased to report
that both a fast charge cable (type
2) and a domestic supply cable
are included; the latter has good
length at 8m, perfect for my
unique charging situation at home
and, as a comparison, it’s twice the
length of that which I was using
recently in the BYD Atto 3.
Mercedes-Benz is launching
head-first into the realm of electric
vehicle transport, it was just a few
weeks ago that I drove the fully
electric EQS, both have impressed
me simply through quality and the
commitment to provide a natural
driving experience, one that you
would find in any new model
from the marque.
Personally, I’d have the
hybrid first, the turbocharged
four-cylinder engine that goes
through much Mercedes-Benz
product is simply a delight, the
benefit hybrid technology brings
in terms of fuel savings is just a
bonus.
