HELP GET SANTA PARADE

CHRISTMAS IS still about
six months away – but the New
Brighton Project is already
moving at full tilt to ensure
its annual street parade goes
ahead.
Co-ordinators Emily Te
Aho and Martha Baxendell
have budgeted about $10,500
for the New Brighton Seaside
Christmas Parade on December
9. More than $8000 of that
will go towards traffic management
costs, Te Aho said.
The parade received a
$7000 grant from the Waitai
Coastal-Burwood-Linwood
Community Board but
another $2500 is still needed
to put the event on. Te Aho
said traffic management is
an “important part of the
parade” but was also where
most of the money goes.
The project must pay a
contractor to manage the road
closures on parade day and
has applied to the city council
to make the temporary
closures.

the people’s choice award at the
2023 Hospitality NZ Awards for
Excellence.
“The people’s choice awards is
the second biggest award given
out, and this the award we really
wanted,” said the club’s general
manager Jimmy Summerfield.

started organising the parade 12
years ago.
Te Aho and Baxendell have
managed the rising costs by
keeping other expenses down
but the parade is now facing its
“biggest shortfall”. The not-forprofit
organisation is hoping the
community will step in to help
cover the remaining costs.
Baxendell says the problem
lies with the funding model for
the parade. The cost of putting it
on has gone up but the funding
has stayed the same. Baxendell
said each year the project applies
for different city council grants
because there is no funding set

STUCK IN: More than 100 volunteers helped plant native trees at Engelfield Reserve over
the weekend.

NORTHWOOD has become
greener, with 2000 native trees
planted.
The trees were planted at
Engelfield Reserve on Sunday as
a collaboration between Green
Gear, Trees for Canterbury and
Styx Living Laboratory Trust.
Trees for Canterbury manager
Steve Bush said the event had
a great turn out, with plenty of
people helping.
“The day was awesome, we had
more than 100 people attend the
planting with a great compliment
of volunteers from Treetech
there,” he said.
Bush said the weather was
cold, but the sun was shining and
families got stuck in.
“It was great to see a lot of
families out on the day. The
children not only planted but
gathered all the used plant pots
and crates the trees came in so
that they could all be reused.”
He said they managed to get
1500 of the 2000 trees planted
on the day, with staff from Styx
Living Laboratory Trust heading
back on Monday morning to
plant the last 500.

Lucy learned of climate
change at age 10 and was so
appalled she decided to do
something about it.
Beginning by making
small, everyday changes
such as what she ate and
how she travelled, her passion
grew into contributing
to the development of climate
change curriculum for schools.
“It’s time to thank those selfless
acts through this recognition,”
said Sandeman.

New pyjamas for kids in need

CHOLMONDELEY
Children’s Centre has received
a donation of more than 200
pairs of brand-new winter
pyjamas and multiple pairs of
slippers, for a second year in
a row.
The Governors Bay charity
has been operating for 98
years and provides temporary
emergency and respite care for
children in need.
Donated by
the Kindness
Collective
Foundation,
the pyjamas
and slippers

costs,” Cholmondeley practice
manager Lisa Hurry said.
“We are an organisation
that’s 80 per cent funded by
the community.”
Hurry said the donation
was part of a Kindness
Collective initiative, which
runs annually.
The collective is a
nationwide charity that
provides children and their
families with the items they
need, like pyjamas and
slippers.
“Every year they have a
pyjama drive,” Hurry
said.
DONATION: Thanks to the Kindness Collective Foundation, 200 pairs of brand-new
winter pyjamas have been donated to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre. ​
Community groups donate
the pyjamas to the collective,
which then distributes
them.
Over the past three years,
the collective has distributed
more than 25,000 pairs of
warm winter pyjamas to
children in need.
Hurry said a portion of the
pyjamas and slippers would
stay at Cholmondeley for
children when they come for
temporary stays.
The remainder would go
back with children to their
families, for them to keep.
“When children come
and stay with us, we provide
everything they need to stay,”
Hurry said.
“A lot of these children
might not have pyjamas.”
Hurry said Cholmondeley
currently supports about 350
children and their families,
and over 30,000 children
have come through the
centre during its 98 years of
operation.
“A lot of people have a
story or a connection to
Cholmondeley,” she said.
“And we can’t do it without
the community.”
The centre thrives off
initiatives like its annual
Giving Day, when donors
match all donations made to
the centre.
This year, the Giving Day
raised more than $50,000
with its donors Christchurch
Casino, United Fisheries and
Oakridge Homes.

Pies: A Kiwi tradition re-imagined

ultimate collection of
pastry treats for every
Kiwi household – and
shares some of her
family’s favourite recipes
PIE TIME:
Wendy Morgan’s
new cookbook
includes
delicious apricot
and rosemary
pies.
While Morgan includes a
chapter on making different
kinds of pastry for pies, she
does say ready-made pastry is a
good convenient product and if
it means someone gets to make
a pie from the book they would
otherwise be too time poor to do
then “I say go for it”.
Flaky pastry 1
225g butter, room temperature
firm
300g high-grade white flour
Pinch salt
185ml cold water
Directions
Rub 30g of butter into the
flour and salt by hand, or use an
electric mixer.
Add the cold water and bring
together to form a soft dough.
Wrap the dough in cling film
or baking paper and rest in the
fridge for 10 minutes, then roll
out to a 40 x 20cm rectangle.
Break the remaining butter
into small pieces and dot it over
two-thirds of the rectangle. Fold
the plain third of the pastry
over to the centre. Then fold the
buttered third over to make a
square. Give the pastry a quarter
turn on the bench.
Gently roll the pastry out.
Start by pushing down with
the rolling pin. Roll out to 50 x
16cm then repeat the same fold
sequence as before.
Wrap the pastry in cling film
or baking paper and rest in the
fridge for 20 minutes.
Repeat the rolling out and
folding sequence five more times,
resting the pastry in the fridge
each time.
Apricot and rosemary
pies
Makes 12 in a muffin tin
Ingredients
250g dried apricots
½ cup white sugar
2 cups boiling water
3 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
1 quantity flaky pastry
1 egg
Demerara sugar
To serve:
Vanilla ice cream
Directions
Put the apricots and sugar into
a glass or stainless-steel bowl
and pour the boiling water over
them. Cover with cling film and
leave overnight.
The next day, preheat the oven
to 170 deg C fan bake.
Pour the apricots and juice
into a ceramic dish, cover with
aluminium foil and bake for 1.5
hours, stirring every half hour.
Add the lemon juice for the last
half hour and the chopped fresh
rosemary for the last 10 minutes.
Leave the mixture to cool.
Turn the oven up to 210 deg C
fan bake.
Cut two-thirds from the
pastry block. On a lightly floured
bench, roll to 3mm thick and,
using a 10cm round cutter, cut 12
rounds. Place these bases into the
muffin tin. Fill each base with 1
tablespoon of apricot mixture:
there should be just enough mix
for the 12 pies. Roll the last third
of pastry out until large enough
to cut twelve 6cm rounds. Place
these on top of the pies.
Whisk the egg and egg-wash
the top of the pies. Cut some
airholes in the pastry with the tip
of a sharp knife. Sprinkle the top
of the pies with demerara sugar.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until
dark golden and puffy. Cool on
a rack if not eating them straight
away. Serve with vanilla ice
cream.

existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well

gain new skills and confidence, meet new
people, keep mentally active or follow
a particular passion. There are a wide
range of courses available and the rewards
from getting together with a group of
likeminded people to learn something

We are offering a range of Photography
Courses this term all taught by John
Foster who is a full-time professional
photographer/educator. On a Monday
night we have a Beginners Photography
Course designed for DSLR, Mirrorless and
Compact Cameras. This course will give
you an insight into how the camera works
and will cover basic camera controls and
handling. For those students who are
wanting to further their skills we have a
Beyond Beginners Course on a Tuesday
night starting rom 25 July. This course is
suitable for experienced amateurs wanting
to expand their knowledge. We are also
offering a Night Photography Course
which will cover equipment, techniques,
how to focus at night, using flash at night
and much more.

still offering our traditional Cooking

Art Show
The CWEA is excited to invite you
to this week-long ART SHOW. The art
on display at 59 Gloucester Street will
represent a variety of styles, subject matter

enjoy the show. Open 10am to 4pm daily
from Friday 14 July until Thursday 20 July,

From a garage art collective whose
practice has been honed by WEA study
with Linda Hart and Nina Cook, Jeanne,
Mike and Kaye were the catalyst for this
collaborative Art Show at WEA. For
some participants this show marks the
courageous step to show their work
beyond family and friends for the first
time. For others it is another opportunity
to show work alongside fellow students
and their tutors. Most of the work will
be for sale and those who seek to acquire
an original work of art should definitely
schedule a visit in the early stages of the
show (with collection to be arranged after
the show concludes).

We would like to introduce our newest
tutor, Rebecca Dent, along with her
engaging course, “Nutrition for Health &
Wellbeing.”
Over eight weeks, learners will gain an
understanding of nutrients in different
foods, how to make balanced meals and
use their new knowledge to plan personal
nutrition changes. Participants will
learn about a variety of topics, including
macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein,
and fat), micronutrients (vitamins and
minerals), hydration, metabolism, national
nutrition guidelines, meal planning,
supplements, deciphering nutrition
labels, debunking nutrition myths and
misinformation, body image, media
influence, intuitive eating, health at every
size, nutrition psychology, and goal setting.
You’ll also explore the relationship
between nutrition and multiple facets of
health, including physical, psychological,
social, cultural, and environmental aspects.
Additionally, special nutrition
circumstances such as allergies, plant-based
diets, and basic exercise nutrition will be
covered.
With her diverse background, Rebecca
has plenty of experience as a Peer tutor for
the Ara Human Nutrition students, teacher
aide, is currently on the Circotica Circus
School committee as their Health and
Safety committee member and has worked
in outdoor education.
Rebecca is equipped with a Bachelor of
Applied Science in Human Nutrition from
Ara Institute of Canterbury and possesses
an in-depth understanding of how nutrition
profoundly impacts overall wellbeing.
