to Nancy Ave and Mahars Rd 

during school hours.

A PLAN TO remove the airport 

terminal stop from a bus route 

which travels through the north 

and western suburbs has been 

scuttled.

Residents Association have won 

their bid to make sure the No 

125 Halswell & Westlake to 

Redwood bus continues to stop 

at the Christchurch Airport 

terminal. 

The change was proposed by 

ECan in April last year because 

of a lack of available space at 

the terminal stop before the 

Covid-19 pandemic hit. An 

ECan spokesperson said it is not

stopping at the airport terminal 

as it did before the pandemic. 

“Since there is currently 

available capacity at the airport 

bus stop, route 125 will continue 

to stop at the 

airport. This 

is based on 

up-to-date

using the

spokesperson 

said when tourism returns 

to the same level as before 

Covid-19, capacity will become 

an issue, but ECan will address 

this as required and the 125 bus

“According to data from recent 

months, an average of around 

1000 people per day use route 

125 on weekdays, with the total 

number of passengers for the 

full month of June 2023 being 

27,138.” 

The bus travels through 

Halswell, Westlake to Redwood 

and stops at the Hub Hornby, 

Russley, Christchurch Airport, 

Bishopdale Village Mall, and 

Northlands. 

Moore said keeping the 

airport stop means passengers 

have retained access to the 

airport for $2 or less. 

“I was quite perplexed when 

hearing the reason for the move 

while I was looking at a mostly 

empty bus terminal. I thought 

it was totally silly to go near the 

airport but not to it.” 

Moore said he has caught the 

bus many times. The airport 

terminal stop was usually empty 

and the bus would only stop at 

the airport for about 30 seconds 

before moving on, he said. 

“I was told the bus terminal 

area was at capacity and 

couldn’t handle any additional 

routes, but it looked empty 

most times when I was there, so 

hence my confusion as to why 

this stop would be removed.” 

He credited Swiggs for his 

hard work. 

“Many are not aware that 

this bus route to the airport 

is available to them, so now 

hopefully it will get used more 

now that people are being made 

aware,” Moore said.

upgraded and 20 car parks 

removed to accommodate the 

intersection safety improvements 

and allow buses to enter and exit 

the existing bus stops safely. 

Cotter said the zebra crossing 

upgrades are needed as the 

existing crossings are not safe 

enough for pedestrians. 

“It is important to upgrade 

them as it is safer for people and 

it will be much better for them. 

We are also improving the access 

to bus stops to make it easier for 

people.” 

Cotter said the condition of 

Innes Rd has deteriorated. 

“We have had people come 

to us and complain about the 

vibrations from cars on the road 

shaking their houses. 

“The improvements may have 

some pain along the way but we 

just to be focused on the prize at 

the end of it all.” 

Feedback on the proposed 

plans closed yesterday and 

Cotter said it will now be 

presented to the Waipapa 

Papanui-Innes-Central 

Community Board. 

“Work on the roads should 

begin later this year and into 

early 2024.”

A BUSY WEEK 

away from the clinic 

Steve, Connor and myself recently 

attended the NZL Veterinary Conference 

in the Capital. My very first vet 

conference, attending with my son. Was 

a fabulous 3 days reconnecting and 

sharing ideas with colleagues, learning 

new medical treatments and more 

about diseases, visiting the trade stands 

and formulating our “wish lists”, and 

spending time with Connor. 

Steve tested Pomeranians through to 

Great Danes, checking for diseases such 

as: 

• Distichiasis - an extra row of eyelashes 

that are directed towards the cornea 

(window of the eye) 

• Cataracts - cloudiness of the lens which 

is normally like a clear marble in the 

middle of the eye 

GOVERNMENT FUNDED: The Jobs for Nature scheme has provided $1.19 

billion in Government funding over four years.

making a difference 

I attended lectures on heart disease in 

cats and dogs, airway disease ( BOAS) 

in the Brachycephalic dog breeds, 

anaesthetic regimes for cardiac and 

respiratory patients, nutrition in heart 

disease and the coughing dog. I actually 

love being back in lecture theatre, 

soaking up new knowledge, new 

medications and what’s new in research. 

In veterinary medicine you can never 

know enough, and I realised early on 

that to get the most of my job and help 

as many patients as I can, I was going to 

have to keep up the study and constantly 

keep improving and bettering myself. 

Which is what I have done for 33 years. 

It’s the degree that just keeps on giving. 

Steve also recently held an “eye testing” 

day in Auckland, organised and run 

by the Auckland Poodle Club. It was a 

jammed packed, fun day, with 104 dogs 

in attendance to have their eyes checked 

by Steve for inherited diseases. Steve 

started at 8am, finishing at 4pm with 

only a 10 minute break. I joined as Steve’s 

secretary, uploading patient details and 

making sure the microchip numbers 

matched the dogs. 

• Retinal Dysplasia - the retina is the 

“nerve” at the back of the eye that 

collects all the visual information. Retinal 

dysplasia with when the retina is not 

formed properly when the puppy is an 

embryo being formed 

• Progressive retinal atrophy - a disease 

where the retina starts to “die away” 

when the dog is an adult. It is a little bit 

like macular degeneration is people. 

• Glaucoma - is an increase in pressure 

within the eye caused by a blockage of 

the internal drainage angle. This is nearly 

always a nasty painful disease in dogs. 

THE JOBS for Nature scheme has 

provided $1.19 billion in Government 

funding over four years to with an 

aim to bring people into nature-based 

employment and support skills training. 

Mitch Thorn is one of a team of five 

young people employed through the 

scheme by the city council as part of the 

Government’s Covid-19 recovery 

package. 

“It’s been a hell of an opportunity, we’re 

really lucky I reckon,” Mitch said. 

“The park rangers have got a lot of work 

that needs doing and being able to have 

five field crew put the hours in and get 

stuff done on the ground has helped free 

them up to work on other projects that 

they wouldn’t normally have the time for, 

which increases the conservation gain 

from the wider team.” 

Alongside him are Matt, Mackenzie, 

Hannah and Georgia, who are all in their 

twenties. 

For 23-year-old, Mackenzie the variety 

of her job is a draw card. Along with pest 

plant control and animal control there’s 

also planting, maintenance and habitat 

restoration on the Port Hills and Banks 

Peninsula. 

Hannah was a summer seasonal ranger 

at Bottle Lake Forest Park before starting 

with Jobs for Nature in February last year. 

She sees a future for herself in some sort 

of conservation field work. 

“Everything I’ve been doing is quite new 

so I’m still learning all the different areas,” 

she said. 

Matt was also on a seasonal summer 

contract before starting and welcomed the 

longer-term position. 

He enjoys wildlife and has since had 

opportunities with city council ecologists 

to do skink monitoring and bird counts 

around Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere. 

“Long-term I want to work with 

wildlife in New Zealand. My wife is from 

Zimbabwe so eventually we might end up 

going there and I’d like to carry on doing 

conservation work,” Matt said. 

City council head of regional parks Kay 

Holder said the Jobs for Nature staff had 

been invaluable. 

“The scheme has provided the 

opportunity for 10 more staff to work 

in Christchurch parks and natural 

environments across the city. Not only 

has this seen a great increase in plant 

and animal pest control, planting and 

maintenance, it has also given training 

and learning opportunities to people who 

will now be better placed to continue this 

important work,” Holder said. 

Steve has organised more clinics around 

the country to eye test breeding dogs. 

It’s very important for the specific breeds 

and breeders that hereditary conditions 

are identified are not passed on to future 

generations.

Unbeatable St Andrew’s team 

dominate junior championships

THE NEXT generation of St 

Andrew’s College netballers 

showcased their talent at the 

South Island secondary schools 

junior championships. 

The school claimed the year 9 

title and finished second in the 

year 10 grade. The year 9 side 

went one better than last year, 

winning the grade for the first 

time since 2018 at Hagley Park 

last week. 

St Andrew’s comfortably beat 

St Hilda’s Collegiate School 44- 

20 to win the tournament. 

Coach Jo Andrew said they are 

a new team but have developed 

strong connections across the 

court quickly. 

“Their ability to score a high 

volume of goals were remarkable 

for such young players,” she said. 

The team’s average of more 

than 40 goals a game and 

accuracy of over 80 per cent was 

largely due to Tactix shooter 

Vika Koloto helping the team 

throughout the season. 

“She is a great role model 

for the shooters and they have 

benefitted from her advice and 

support,” said Andrew, who is 

a former Canterbury Flames 

player. 

St Andrew’s went through the 

three-day tournament unbeaten 

and a dream run saw them win 

all their playoff games by more 

than 10 goals. 

Andrew said the team 

executed their game plans and 

showed steady improvements. 

“They are a group of girls who 

love playing netball together.” 

The school’s year 10 side 

suffered a heartbreaking 30-21 

loss to Dunedin’s Columba 

College in their final. A majority 

of the team were part of the 

St Andrew’s side who lost to 

Columba in the year 9 final last 

year. 

St Margaret’s College and 

Christchurch Girls’ High battled 

it out in the year 10 third place 

playoff, with St Margaret’s 

coming out on top 25-15. Villa 

Maria took fifth place over 

Marlborough Girls’ College.

High managed to hold off a

ST ANDREW’S College rugby 

coach Gabe Casey has been 

named in Canada’s 32-man 

squad to tour Tonga next 

month. 

The squad for the two-test 

series was announced last week. 

Casey, who is still 

uncapped, was named 

in the side to tour 

Brazil last year but did 

not take the field. 

The 23-year-old 

became involved 

with coaching at St 

Andrew’s College 

earlier this year. 

He made his debut 

for the Sumner Wave 

in the Metro Premier 

competition this season. He 

has previously played for the 

Toronto Arrows in North 

America’s Major League Rugby 

competition. 

Casey, who hails from Ottawa 

and studied at the University of 

Victoria in Ontario, started in 

all but one of Sumner’s round 

robin matches at centre or on 

the right wing.

at 3pm on Saturday. They failed

Sweetness at start and finish of the day 

Nigel Slater turns to 

brilliantly colourful 

rhubarb and chard for 

two dishes that look as 

good as they taste 

Roast rhubarb with 

porridge and oat crumble 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

800g rhubarb stalks 

2 medium oranges 

2 heaped Tbsp caster sugar 

6 juniper berries 

For the oat crumble: 

75g plain flour 

75g butter 

A good pinch of sea salt 

50g caster sugar 

55g rolled oats 

For the porridge: 

400ml water 

100g pinhead oatmeal 

Salt to taste 

Directions 

Trim any dry ends from the 

rhubarb and discard, then cut 

each stalk into pieces roughly 

5cm long. Pack the rhubarb into 

a non-reactive baking dish. Preheat 

the oven to 200 deg C. 

Cut the oranges in half and 

squeeze their juice into a bowl. 

Stir in the sugar then press the 

juniper berries with a heavy 

weight to crack them open, and 

add to the orange juice. Pour 

the juice and berries over the 

rhubarb and bake for about 30 

minutes until soft. 

Make the crumble: Put 

the flour and butter in a food 

processor and process to coarse 

crumbs, then stir in the salt, 

sugar and oats. Drop in 1 Tbsp 

of water and shake the bowl 

backward and forwards until the 

mixture forms crumbs. Tip on 

to a baking sheet and slide into 

the oven, it can go in at the same 

time as the rhubarb. Bake until 

pale gold (about 20 minutes), 

then remove and set aside. 

Remove the rhubarb from the 

oven while you make the porridge. 

Bring the water to the boil, 

rain in the oatmeal and stir for 

3 or 4 minutes while it thickens. 

Stir in a pinch of salt and divide 

between 4 small bowls. Put some 

of the rhubarb in each bowl, then 

spoon over the rhubarb juice. 

Scatter some of the crumble over 

each dish of fruit and porridge. 

Sweet, hot chard 

I have had this as a side dish 

for chargrilled mackerel and 

with tempura-style fried broccoli, 

but it is also good on top of 

steamed rice. 

Serves 2 as a side dish 

Ingredients 

For the dressing: 

2 garlic cloves 

1 stalk of lemongrass 

2 hot red chillies 

A small (40g) piece of ginger 

2 Tbsp vegetable oil 

1 Tbsp light soy sauce 

1 Tbsp lime juice 

1 Tbsp fish sauce 

3 Tbsp runny honey 

400g chard stalks 

3 Tbsp groundnut oil 

Directions 

Peel and crush the garlic to a 

paste with a pinch of salt, then 

scrape into an empty screw-top 

jar. Peel away the outer leaves 

of the lemongrass, then roughly 

chop the tender shoot within. 

Put the chopped lemongrass into 

an electric spice mill or coffee 

grinder and process to a dry 

paste, then add it to the garlic. 

Roughly chop the chillies and 

add to the garlic and lemongrass. 

Peel the ginger, then grate to a 

paste and add to the jar. Add 

the vegetable oil, soy sauce, lime 

juice and fish sauce, then spoon 

in the honey, tighten the lid and 

shake to combine to a thin, syrupy 

dressing. 

Cut the chard stalks into short 

pieces, roughly 10cm in length. 

Warm the groundnut oil in a 

large, shallow pan over a moderate 

heat, then add the chard 

stalks and cover with a lid. Let 

the chard cook for 10 minutes, 

turning the stalks over occasionally 

until they are tender. 

Pour the dressing into the pan 

and toss the chard stalks in it. 

Let the dressing bubble for 4-5 

minutes until it coats the stalks, 

then transfer to a serving dish.

Sustainable and sporty with a lot of space 

MERCEDES-BENZ continues 

its push to offer a broader range 

of electric models by adding an 

EV version of its compact but 

enormously practical EQB SUV. 

The EQB follows in the 

footsteps of the smaller EQA 

SUV, which alphabetically is a 

logical evolution. Since its launch 

in 2021, it’s become a popular 

choice for those keen to commit 

to a more sustainable lowemission 

vehicle, with premium

Powering the EQB is an 

electric drivetrain developed by

instantly, no engine revs 

required. It makes most internal 

combustion engines seem a 

tad like yesterday’s technology, 

which they probably will be 

in about five years. The EQB 

delivers exceptional performance 

across the board and does it 

with ease, and is brilliantly 

supported by two outstanding 

electric motors and a one speed 

automatic. 

The fit and finish of the passenger 

compartment is excellent. 

A large and spacious interior 

ensures plenty of room for everyone. 

The EQB 350 adds more significant 

features. Among them

head restraints and micro fibre 

inserts with red stitching. A 

multi-function sports steering 

wheel wrapped in Nappa leather 

adds a touch of class. 

A Driver Assistance Package 

features a comprehensive suite

in the Mercedes-EQ passenger 

vehicle line-up, the EQB has 

acoustic ambient protection to 

reduce the risk to pedestrians 

and cyclists by the vehicle’s 

silent drivetrain. It sounds an 

audible warning at speeds below 

20km/h, plus a reversing tone. 

Handling is as good as you 

will find in a luxury compact 

SUV with deep reserves of real 

world grip. This isn’t a bona fide 

off-road battler; the vehicle’s 

modest ground clearance limits 

excursions in rougher terrain.

weighted steering with its
