Sick and tired of crime
Residents set
up hub for
monitoring
• By Heidi Slade
RESIDENTS IN some of
Christchurch’s most upmarket
suburbs have launched a plan
to use a decommissioned police
station as a crime monitoring hub.
The plan is to use the former
Sumner Police Station, from which
they would cover suburbs from
Ferrymead to Scarborough.
The initiative is the brainchild of
a group of residents who say they
are concerned about the lack of
police presence in the areas.
The group is calling themselves
the Bays Community Policing Hub
and would answer phone calls,
file reports to police and support
people who are victims of crime,
like burglaries.
The police station is currently
used by the Sumner Community
and Residents Association and
Hub.
“We are supportive of
community coming together to
address local issues and appreciate
concern about theft in Sumner,”
said Sumner Community
Residents’ Association and Hub
community engagement adviser
Charlie Hudson (right).
“We are a very empowered
community and believe that
staying connected, knowing
your neighbours, supporting
each other and being sensible
about keeping your property and
belongings secured is an effective
first step to address the problem,”
she said.
Hudson said while is it
located in the decommissioned
police station, the building is
still part of the police property
portfolio.
Promise
to solve
issue of
cruise ship
passengers
filling buses
ENVIRONMENT Canterbury
has committed to reducing the
impact of cruise ships on its bus
services, which are struggling to
keep up with demand.
More than 70 cruise ships have
visited Lyttelton Port over the
past 12 months,
with the next
season due to start
in November.
ECan chair
Peter Scott said
it needs to find a
balance between
giving ratepayers Peter Scott
the services they
need and accommodating the
passengers.
“When cruise ships come in,
they overwhelm those services,
which means that ratepayers
can’t get to their destinations
across a number of things –
medical appointments, school
appointments.”
ECan estimated it would
cost an additional $1 million to
accommodate passengers and
keep regular services operating
next season.
study.
The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in
the nutrition and health of older women.
Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain
muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with
poor nutrition in older adults.
We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate
in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health
effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep.
We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink
twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet
(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11
hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in
supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs
involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs).
If you are a woman aged 60 to 80 years and can drink milk, we would
love to hear from you.
CRIME: CCTV footage shows the offenders attempting
to break into the cigarette cabinets of FreshChoice
Lyttelton.
Supermarket hit
in crime spree
FRESHCHOICE IN Lyttelton
was one of seven business
targeted by ram-raiders during
a crime spree across greater
Christchurch at the weekend.
The incident was captured
on CCTV cameras inside the
store, showing four people
breaching the shop’s entrance
with a car and running into
the store in an attempt to steal
cigarettes.
It appeared the thieves were
intending to loot cigarettes from
a locked cabinet. They were
unsuccessful in their attempts
and instead left the shop with
considerable damage.
The supermarket’s owner,
Rob De Thier, said the offenders
threw bottles of wine onto the
ground out of frustration for
not getting the cigarettes.
“It’s a sad indictment on
society,” he said.
“I might put a couple of
bollards up, but again it’s sad I
have to look at doing that.”
Movement on cruise
ship bus dilemma
COMMUNITY HUB: The Sumner Community Residents
Association is based out of the old Sumner Police Station.
Plans are afoot to use it for crime monitoring.
Residents take
action on crime
• From page 1
Any group monitoring
antisocial activity on the site
would need to have the support
of police, Hudson said.
Bay Community Policing Hub
members are staying under the
radar, refusing to be identified
until they advance their plans.
The group had its first meeting
last Tuesday night.
They intend to have volunteers
at the police station, answering
calls from concerned residents,
filing police reports and providing
support.
“We want to be low key and observing,
and passing information
on (to police),” a spokesperson for
the group said.
“It’s well known that the
police are overworked and that
is why the residents are concerned.”
The initiative comes after
residents in other parts of the
city held meetings over concerns
about crime and police responses
and presence.
More than 50 Heathcote Valley
residents met with police, Fire
and Emergency New Zealand,
Neighbourhood Support and
the City to Sumner Community
Patrol over their concerns about
crime.
• From page 1
But Scott said he did not want
to place the entire burden of that
cost on ratepayers.
ECan hosted a meeting to discuss
the impact of cruise ships
on public transport services on
Monday.
Scott met with Waka Kotahi,
local MPs, Lyttelton Port
Company, the city council and
the Cruise Association, who
all agreed to come up with a
solution.
“We agreed that there is an
urgency to move on this prior
to the next season, and that the
community will be involved
in the process to develop some
solutions,” Scott said.
“There’s no absolute hard
decisions come out yet, but
we’re really confident that after
we’ve had the community board
meeting we’ll be on the right
path.”
Community consultation was
expected to take place in the
next three to four weeks.
“Time pressure is there. I
mean everyone is keen to try
and move it forward.”
He confirmed discussions over
a cruise ship levy were not on
the table at Monday’s meeting,
they wanted to find solutions.
Cruise ship visitors contribute
about $34m a year to the local
economy.
New Zealand Cruise Association
chief executive Jacqui Lloyd
said the industry welcomed the
collaborative approach.
“The cruise industry is pleased
to be included in the discussion
and collaboration to ensure
that all visitors are seen as good
guests, are respectful of the
local community and that the
presence of passengers adds
to the vibrancy of the city,”
Zephyr releases its debut single
• By Briar Allen
A RISING young rock band is
set to release its debut single on
Friday.
Former and current students
from Christchurch Boys’ High,
Christchurch Girls’ High and
Avonside Girls’ High Schools
make up the band Zephyr.
(She Ain’t Got No) Shame is the
band’s first single since forming
in 2022. It follows their success at
last year’s Rockquest, where they
were third in the national final.
They also opened the Selwyn
Sounds music festival in March.
There, they performed to
about 5000 people and shared
the stage with renowned New
Zealand musicians Sir Dave
Dobbyn, Stellar, Mi-Sex and Gin
Wigmore.
Guitarist Reuben Anderson,
17, bassist Scarlett Robson, 17,
and drummer Mya Cawood, 18,
have been friends since they were
13.
Vocalist Cleo Cavell, 17, joined
the band after being approached
by Robson to be their singer.
Anderson said it is quite
exciting to be releasing their
debut song.
“It has been a big process but
very happy it’s happening,” he
said.
He said it has taken awhile
because they have been learning
ROCKERS: Lead singer
March. Zephyr releases its
debut single on Friday.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
about the process and what goes
on behind the scenes of recording
a song.
“We want to thank Chris
van de Geer from the band
Stellar* for helping us with the
distribution and everyone at
Big Pop Records and Regan
Barker for helping us with the
recording.”
Cavell said the biggest obstacle
was deciding on the cover art for
the single.
“When you have four people
with all different visions and
styles it can take a while to agree
on something,” she said.
Originally the band was called
The Jhets but they changed the
name as people kept thinking
they were like Bennie and the
Jets.
“We didn’t like the association
and we didn’t like how it wasn’t
original, so from the beginning
of this year we have been Zephyr,
which Mya came up with and we
all liked,” she said.
The single follows the story
of a young female waltzing her
way through life in a groupie
fashion with attacking guitar
riffs, a pounding bass, powerful
drumming and a stunning vocal
range.
With three of the musicians
still at school, Anderson and
Cavell said they hope to continue
the band for a while.
“The goal is to write as much
music as we can and get it
recorded and released,” he said.
• (She Ain’t Got No)
Shame will be available on
Spotify, iTunes and Apple
Music and can be presaved
on their Facebook
and Instagram pages, or
you can catch the band
live at The Bower in the
beer garden from 1pm on
Government’s Covid-19 recovery
package.
“It’s been a hell of an
opportunity, we’re really lucky I
reckon,” he said.
“The park rangers have got
a lot of work that needs doing
and being able to have five field
crew put the hours in and get
stuff done on the ground has
helped free them up to work
on other projects that they
wouldn’t normally have the
time for, which increases the
conservation gain from the
wider team.”
Alongside him are Matt,
Mackenzie, Hannah and
Georgia, who are all in
their 20s.
For 23-year-old Mackenzie
the variety of her job is a draw
card. Along with pest plant
and animal control there’s also
planting, maintenance and
habitat restoration on the Port
Hills and Banks Peninsula.
Hannah was a summer
seasonal ranger at Bottle Lake
Forest Park before starting with
Jobs for Nature in February last
year.
She sees a future for herself in
some sort of conservation field
work.
“Everything I’ve been doing is
quite new so I’m still learning all
the different areas,” she said.
Matt was also on a seasonal
summer contract before starting
and welcomed the longer-term
position.
He enjoys wildlife and has
since had opportunities with
city council ecologists to do
skink monitoring and bird
counts around Te Waihora Lake
Ellesmere.
“Long-term I want to work
with wildlife in New Zealand.
My wife is from Zimbabwe so
eventually we might end up
going there and I’d like to carry
on doing conservation work,”
Matt said.
City council head of regional
parks Kay Holder said the
Jobs for Nature staff had been
invaluable.
“The scheme has provided the
opportunity for 10 more staff to
work in Christchurch parks and
natural environments across the
city,” Holder said.
“Not only has this
seen a great increase in
plant and animal pest
control, planting and
maintenance, it has also
given training and learning
opportunities to people who
will now be better placed to
continue this important work.”
Award a surprise after
six years with St John
AKAROA HATO Hone St John
volunteer Rick Menzies does
everything from providing
medical treatment at the scene to
organising patients’ transport to
hospital.
After six years with
the organisation, he was
recognised with an award from
Volunteering Canterbury –
which he says was a shock.
“Receiving the award was
unexpected, but it’s nice that
volunteers are recognised for
what they contribute to their
communities,” Menzies said.
He began volunteering at
Akaroa HHSJ when he was
nearing retirement and looking
to take on a new challenge after
farming for most of his life.
“I didn’t really see myself doing
something like golf three days
a week, so I decided I should do
something worthwhile.”
For some of his six years as
a HHSJ volunteer, he was also
working on his family farm at
Menzies Bay north of Akaroa.
But Menzies and wife Gay
recently passed on the farm to
one of their sons, so he said he
now spends most of his spare
time offering seasoned advice.
“Like most people, I have done
a lot of different things in my life,
but nothing has given the instant
job satisfaction that being an
ambulance officer has given me,”
he said.
“There is something satisfying
about providing comfort and
help to someone, no matter how
little, when they are often at the
lowest moment of their life.”
While Menzies said he
couldn’t disclose particular
incidents he had been involved
in over his time as a volunteer,
he said there was never a dull
moment.
“Most of the job involves
responding to medical
emergencies. That can involve
providing medical treatment at
the scene of an accident, helping
make someone comfortable after
they’ve had a medical problem
or stabilising a patient and
organising transport to hospital,”
he said.
HHSJ group operations
manager Brendan McInnes said
Akaroa HHSJ is looking for
more ambulance officers to crew
the first response unit.
“Ambulance volunteers
are vital to rural and remote
Community input critical
DO YOU FIND yourself thinking about
what we could, or should do to improve
the environment and protect it for future
generations? Me too.
Unfortunately, the environment isn’t
in the condition it should be. This is due
to decisions of the past, which were well
intentioned but lacked the science and
technology that we have now, which we
can’t ignore.
Now’s not the time to point fingers,
instead we need to work together – and
fast – to turn the tide of environmental
degradation in some parts of our region to
protect our water, land and air, and to
improve biodiversity.
Canterbury Regional Council
(Environment Canterbury) is responsible
for enforcing the rules that dictate
how Cantabrians use and enjoy the
environment.
Over the next 18 months we will be
working to write and update a number of
long-term and strategic plans to reflect
the directions set by Government, meet
the expectations of mana whenua and
the wider community, and to respond to
climate change.
The changes we make to these plans will
have an impact and will give us a better
chance at safeguarding the environment
for the future. We’ve got a lot of ground
to cover – and we can only do it well with
your help.
We need the community to help us write
Feeling bloated
or have a sore stomach?
The Soothe Study is recruiting now.
We are looking for people with functional dyspepsia (indigestion) to
participate in a research study investigating the digestive health effects
of consuming mānuka honey.
Symptoms of functional dyspepsia include:
• pain or burning in the stomach, bloating, excessive belching (burping)
or nausea after meals
• an early feeling of fullness when eating
• pain in the stomach that may sometimes occur unrelated to meals or
may be relieved by eating.
After a two-week lead-in period, we will provide you with mānuka honey
or a honey-like product to eat before breakfast and dinner every day for
six-weeks. Two weeks later we will again ask you about your functional
dyspepsia symptoms.
The time commitment for this study will be about 10 hours and you will
attend six clinic visits in total. You will receive up to $220 in supermarket
vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs associated with
participating in this study (e.g., parking and/or travel costs).
If you experience symptoms of functional dyspepsia, and are aged
18 to 70 years we would love to hear from you.
way forward represents all Cantabrians.
We have developed a survey which
I encourage you to seek out and
complete. We’re asking you to share your
experiences and opinions on some of
the different environmental challenges
we face in Canterbury/Waitaha. What
is important to you, and what are your
aspirations for the region’s future?
The survey isn’t a once-only
opportunity; later this year, we will reflect
back on what we have heard and test
some potential solutions with the wider
community, and anyone who has taken
part in this initial survey.
Everyone has the right to enjoy the
environment, and in turn, everyone has a
responsibility to protect it. I hope you
will take time to help us develop some
solutions.
STRONG: No. 8 Conner van Turnhout shakes off Sydenham defence in the
Wave’s 43-21 win in Saturday’s plate semi-final.
PHOTOS: B KING
Can the Wave
make it five from
five at home?
• By Jaime Cunningham
THE SUMNER Wave will look to make
it five from five at St Leonards Square this
season when they take on Burnside in the
Metro Premier plate final for their last
game of the year.
The Wave host the playoff for seventh in
Sumner following a commanding 43-21
win over Sydenham that saw the team
continue their season into another week.
For the first time in several games, the
Wave shot to an early lead against Sydenham
– up 12-0 for a large period of the
first half.
Last year’s Metro Premier champions
fought hard and closed in to 19-14 at the
halftime break. However, the Wave were
able to slowly build on their lead throughout
the 80 minutes, cementing the win
with 14 unanswered points in five minutes
late in the second half.
Despite missing out on the trophy
semi-finals due to a heartbreaking 25-21
loss to New Brighton two weeks ago,
Sumner can still finish one better than
last year by winning the plate in their final
game of the season.
Last year, the Wave lost the plate final to
University 59-39 after a run of form at the
end of the season.
The team have an impeccable record at
St Leonards this year, winning all four of
their home games so far, although they
were allocated just three in the round-robin
stages due to game management issues
last season.
A win against Burnside would see the
Wave complete a perfect season at home
with five wins.
Sumner last played Burnside in the last
round-robin match on July 1, where the
Wave came out on top 30-13.
Burnside advanced to the plate final
with a surprise 29-19 win over eighthplaced
Shirley last week.
Sumner will also celebrate international
day at St Leonards on Saturday,
acknowledging the nations which the
players, coaches and supporters hail from.
The Port of Lyttelton’s
historic jetties
Wednesday July 19 2023 Bay Harbour News
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 11
ON JUNE 20, the Lyttelton
Port Company announced their
decision to dismantle three of
the inner harbour’s historic
wharves – jetties 4, 5 and 6.
These late 19th century structures,
which have been witness
to so much maritime activity
over more than a century, have
not been accessible to the public
since the mid 1990s.
The port company says 66kms
of timber will be removed,
including the piles which will be
extracted by a crane on a barge
(currently visible in place beside
No. 6 jetty). When possible, the
timber will be recycled by being
gifted to iwi, local councils and
community groups, with necessary
environmental controls in
place in regard to the infestation
of Mediterranean fanworm,
found in the piles in 2022.
Prior to European settlement,
the waterfront was utilised by
Whakaraupō Māori as a base for
fishing and trading at Ōhinehou
Lyttelton, near the entrance to
today’s road tunnel, and also
near the site of the old post
office.
The bay which would become
the Port of Lyttelton had shallow
water to a depth of only about
8m at low tide and a gently sloping
sandy shore on its eastern
flanks, with rocky bluffs to the
west. The seabed was loess; a
fine wind-deposited silt, which
made for huge challenges when
colonial infrastructure began to
be constructed, as it turned to a
cloying mud when worked.
Once Lyttelton had been
officially designated a port on
August 30, 1849, preparations for
the arrival of the Canterbury Association’s
fleet of ‘Pilgrim’ ships
bound for the carefully planned
settlement of the region began in
earnest.
Under the watchful eye of
the Canterbury Association’s
chief surveyor Captain Joseph
Thomas, the loads of Tasmanian
hardwood were imported and
the first jetty was constructed by
Messrs John Grubb, and Robert
and Magnus Allan.
While the jetty was being built,
others worked on levelling the
foreshore, the construction of
a seawall, the roadway named
Norwich Quay (after the Anglican
Bishopric of Norwich) along
with a customs house, agent’s
office, immigration barracks
and a fine house for Canterbury
Association agent and leader
Robert Godley.
That first jetty, known as
Thomas’s or ‘the Government
Jetty,’ was soon extended with
screw piles, the installation of
which highlighted the peculiarities
of the seabed in as much as
the liquified silt ‘swallowed’ most
of the rock that was thrown at it.
Port development continued
apace through the rest of the
century. The construction of
‘Peacock’s Wharf’ in 1857 was
The Ocean Steamer wharf at Lyttelton under
construction. The paddle steamer tug Lyttelton’ at
a privately funded enterprise by
John Jenkins Peacock; this was
the first commercial jetty near
the location of today’s No. 7
Jetty (also known as the ‘Ocean
Steamer wharf’ through the 20th
century).
The massive engineering
achievement of the construction
of the rail tunnel through the
hill to Heathcote provided
much spoil for the reclamation
nowadays occupied by oil tanks.
A damaging tsunami caused by
an earthquake in Peru in 1868
convinced the powers that be
of the need for breakwaters to
protect the inner harbour; the
eastern mole, completed in 1876
with railway lines, goods shed
and lighthouse, became known
as Gladstone Pier.
With the establishment of the
Lyttelton Harbour Board in 1877,
facilities continued to be built
and improved, including jetties
4, 5 and 6, constructed between
1875-1881.
Another essential element of
port infrastructure, the graving
dock was opened in 1883 to
much fanfare. Over ensuing
years the inner harbour jetties
saw the arrival and departure
of countless vessels powered by
both sail and steam.
The museum’s online collection
holds numerous images of
a forest of masts and funnels at
these jetties – vessels servicing
the frozen meat and wool trade,
royal visitors, troop and hospital
ships, Antarctic exploration vessels,
naval craft including those
that served Operation Deep
Freeze in the 1950s and 60s, tugs,
ferries, steamers and pleasure
boats. Neighbouring No. 2 Jetty
hosted the movements of the
interisland ferry service for 80
years until ceasing of operations
in 1976.
The development of Cashin
Quay from 1957-1964 and the
opening of the Container Terminal
in 1976 saw cargo movement
shift away from the inner harbour
jetties.
Jetties 4, 5 and 6 had their
decking replaced in 1978,
however from the early 1990s
they had fallen into such a state
of disrepair they were deemed
unsafe and public access was no
longer permitted.
Locals of a certain generation
tell stories of their exploits on
and around those jetties, including
the museum’s own founder,
Baden Norris, who wrote of
searching for ‘treasure’ around
the jetty piles as a boy.
To date, Lyttelton Port
Company has not announced
any plans for operational
activities in the vicinity once
the ‘broken teeth’ in the inner
harbour’s smile have been
removed.
Total shock for influencer: Pageant
Miss New Zealand
began in 1962 and has
featured household
names like Lorraine
Downes who won it in
1983 and went on to
win Miss Universe. Now
Christchurch 22-year-old
Georgia Waddington
has been crowned Miss
NZ. Reporter Briar Allen
catches up with her
SOCIAL MEDIA influencer
and content creator Georgia
Waddington had never competed
in a pageant before entering Miss
New Zealand.
“I was hesitant to start with as
I had never done anything like
this before,” she said.
She heard about it after she
was tagged in a social media post
looking for contestants.
“I spoke to the director of the
pageant, and we had a long talk
where I asked so many questions.
Then I said ‘okay, I’ll do it’.”
Waddington said it was a shock
to win the title.
“It was the most amazing
feeling. A complete shock. As
someone who is more reserved
until I am comfortable, this
taught me confidence and it
pushed me out of my comfort
zone. This journey has been
amazing,” she said.
Waddington also won awards
for Top Model, Social Media
which was held in Auckland.
The former Rangi Ruru
CHARITY QUEEN: Waddington (left) with I am Hope founder
Mike King at her charity event.
Waddington said organising
her charity event – a fundraiser
evening for I am Hope – was a
challenge.
“I was trying to keep the cost
as low as possible, so I managed
to secure sponsorship for most
things and after much persistence
I got Mike King to fly down and
attend the event. It was a lot of
work and effort to raise that
amount, but it was worth it.”
Waddington raised more than
$6000, while collectively the
participants raised more than
$29,000.
During the pageant, Waddington
said she focused on her
reason for entering, which was to
best support and represent New
Zealand, but also to use her platform
to help advocate for others.
“The pageant itself goes way
beyond beauty; it is empowering
beauty with a purpose. It helps
build a platform to be able to
help support others (and) build
personal development and I have
made lifelong friends from this. It
took dedication, persistence and
determination.”
Waddington said her friends
and family were supportive, as
were her followers online.
Along with the title she
received a beauty package, a photography
and coaching package,
a professional media kit and
portfolio, and a weekend getaway
for two in a hotel.
She will now represent
New Zealand at the Miss
International 2023 pageant in
Japan in October, where she
will wear a custom-made New
Zealand national costume and
gown. Waddington’s flights and
accommodation are paid for.
“It is an awesome opportunity,
I am currently working hard to
do New Zealand proud. There is
a lot of work being done behind
the scenes,” she said.
Some of the work for Miss International
includes achieving a UN
Sustainable Development Goal;
Waddington has chosen to focus
on good health and well-being.
“I am working on an eBook
that will focus on morning routines,
meditation, writing down
your goals and living a healthy
lifestyle.”
She said anyone who has
questions about the pageant is
welcome to reach out and have a
chat.
Tiguan R ready for road or racetrack
ONE OF MY friends has a
Skoda Octavia RS. It suits him
perfectly, he likes the space in
the rear and at the other end,
he enjoys the power from that
fabulous turbocharged 2-litre
engine.
But as age is catching up on
him he, like us all, is finding getting
in and out of a low wagon/
sedan not the easiest when his
hips complain.
He asked me recently what
would be a suitable replacement
in terms of a sport utility vehicle.
I immediately told him that the
Kodiaq RS would provide him
with all the performance he
enjoys now along with the Skoda
familiarity.
I also told him about Volkswagen’s
Tiguan R, an SUV that
shares much the same driveline
but with a bit more turbo boost
delivering higher power outputs.
And given the $1000 price difference
new is marginal between
Kodiaq RS and Tiguan R, I think
my friend might be tempted
with the latter.
The Tiguan R is rated at 235kW
and 400Nm, much the same as
the Golf R I evaluated recently.
The Tiguan also gets all the trick
gear that makes the R (Race)
series so desirable – four-wheeldrive,
adaptive dampers and
torque vectoring control. The
latter doesn’t just distribute drive
between the front and rear axles,
but also between the left and right
rear wheels using a multi-plate
clutch coupling system. This can
direct up to 100 per cent of the
possible torque to the wheel on
the outside of the bend, reducing
the radius and minimising any
onset of understeer.
Race mode is activated by a
steering wheel-mounted button;
once pushed, the entire driveline
goes into a manic state, it is excitable
and eager to blast through
any given highway. It also imparts
angry sound, the engine and
exhaust spit and bark in unison,
it’s infectious and could be a trap
because, like its stablemates, the
R series is biased toward exhilaration
on any given journey, a
constant watch on the speedometer
is recommended.
In terms of power outputs, take
note of where the specific points
of delivery are – 5600 to 6500rpm
and 2000 to 5600rpm for torque,
that is a constant supply of energy
which means you don’t have to
hammer the engine hard to make
it work freely, the flow of power
is constant and forceful at any
given point. Drive is through a
direct shift gearbox. Effectively
it is a manual, but there are only
two pedals in the car – brake
and accelerator. Gear changes
are automated unless the driver
takes control through a sequential
DISGUISED: The Volkswagen Tiguan R also represents
versatile family wagon transport.
VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN R: Uprated engine from Volkswagen Golf GTi.
shifting system from the main
gearshift lever itself or through
paddles.
Such are the speed of the
changes, the transition of power
isn’t affected. Under load the engine
surges with an uninterrupted
power delivery, it is forceful and
ratio changes are ushered in without
notice – bar the dash panel
indication.
Against the clock the Tiguan R
will scorch to 100km/h in 5.2sec
and will make a highway overtake
(80-120km/h) in 4sec. These are
fast times and ones that are very
rewarding when circumstances
allow.
If fuel usage comes into the
equation, I simply can’t work
out how the engine delivers so
much delight yet comes in with
a claimed 9.7-litre per 100km/h
combined cycle average. At
100km/h the engine is turning
over leisurely at 1800rpm,
returning a 6l/100km figure.
When I returned the vehicle back
to the dealership it was showing
10l/100km which was pretty impressive
because I did enjoy the
turbocharged thrust on several
occasions.
That’s not saying it can’t be
driven sedately at city speeds, in
fact the opposite applies, it is gentle
and delicate in close confines
and is comfortable on the suburb
to city commute.
• Price – Volkswagen
Tiguan R, $80,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4514mm; width, 1859mm;
height, 1668mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
1984cc, 235kW, 400Nm,
seven-speed direct shift
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 5.2sec
• Fuel usage – 9.7l/100km
But it’s on the open road that
the Tiguan R really struts its stuff,
powering out of a corner doesn’t
force any wayward cornering
motion, of course there are
those electronic and mechanical
systems working to correct any
physical force off-line; however,
theTiguan R doesn’t rely on these
devices it has poise and grip
provided by clever suspension
elements and, of course, the
transfer of power to each corner.
As much as I enjoyed the
force of power blasting from
corner to corner, you can only
do that if you have confidence
in the brakes. The massive
four-disc system has substantial
retardation.
The test car was riding on 19in
wheels fitted with Hankook low
profile tyres, which along with the
4Motion driveline, vast amounts
of grip can barely be tested. It
must be said as well the Tiguan R
doesn’t handle like a traditional
SUV, it has poise and balance
which is quite unusual for a
vehicle well over 1.6m tall.
The Tiguan R also satisfies as
an all-round family wagon, it has
speed which stuns the senses but
it also is a complete package in
terms of practicality. Those on
board are treated to a decent ride
and plenty of space that you can
spread around in, that’s the ethos
of SUVs and the Tiguan R is no
exception.
What the Tiguan R represents
well is the word sport in sport
utility vehicle, it’s a sensational
package and one that gives you
a relatively good bang for your
buck. At $80,990 ($85,990 high
grade) it’s not too wayward in
terms of pricing. However, you
can guarantee the Government
will come knocking for a few
extra dollars as part of its Clean
Car Programme fee.
Nevertheless, it’s a car for those
who need space for the family
yet want the performance of Golf
R but in a bigger package, and
want it to be docile enough for
the myriad of tasks that SUVs
are presented with on a daily
basis. Not withstanding it’s height
makes it a breeze to get in and
out of.
