A BLIND man with a passion
for running will compete
in November’s New York
Marathon.
Blair McConnell, 58, was
born with retinitis pigmentosa.
The genetic eye disease causes
cells in the retina to break down
slowly over time, resulting in
progressive vision loss.
McConnell, of Prebbleton,
will travel to The Big Apple for
the world’s largest marathon
as one of seven athletes with
Achilles International
New Zealand.
Achilles aims to provide
people with disabilities the
opportunity to participate
in mainstream athletics, and
matches them with volunteer
guides.
McConnell started running
about four years ago after being
an “armchair sportsperson” for
most of his life.

fix for
deadly
intersection

be made to an intersection which
has seen two deadly crashes.
District council infrastructure
and property group manager

work will include cutting back the
overhanging trees at the Longstaffs
and Trices Rds intersection,
Prebbleton, to improve visibility.

over the last 20 years. Another five
reported crashes, including one last
Tuesday, resulted in
no injuries.

Popular hotel’s licence up in air
after authorities oppose renewal

liquor licence or have restrictions
placed on its operation.

medical officer of health
are opposing the renewal of The
Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln’s
licence.
A date for a
potential hearing
is expected to
be determined

and make
submissions.

Club operates The Famous
Grouse through its company

club has about 500 members and
promotes itself as ‘the club in a
pub’.

In recent years, the hotel has
courted Lincoln University
student events for business. But
with that revenue source comes
the potential issues involving
young people and alcohol.
Townsend said the opposition
to the licence renewal was a
surprise.
“We were very surprised to
hear at the very last minute the
police put an application to
oppose the renewal,” Townsend
said.
Townsend wouldn’t specifically
say what the issues were for
the opposition but pointed to
students.
“Particularly what happens at
times with students and sometimes
situations develop before
we can do anything about it,
despite security and staff surveillance,”
he said.
Townsend thought it was
unlikely the hotel would lose its
licence, rather it was more likely
to have extra conditions added to
the licence.
It is possible there may not be a
hearing if The Famous Grouse’s
lawyers, police, the medical
officer of health and the district
council licensing officer come to
a resolution.
Asked by the Selwyn Times
if there was a contingency plan
for the Lincoln Club if the hotel
loses its licence, Townsend said:
“I’m sure it’s not going to get to
that point. We’re not too concerned
about it.”
The Lincoln Club does not
have a separate licence from
Famous Grouse 2009 Ltd to
operate, he said.
Sergeant David Robertson,
from the alcohol harm
prevention unit, declined to
specify why police opposed the
renewal.
“The police position takes into
account a number of factors,
including the potential for
alcohol harm to arise from the
premises,” Robertson said.
“As the matter is yet to be
scheduled for a public hearing
police do not seek to make further
comment at this time.”
District council chief licensing
inspector Malcolm Johnston
would not comment on the
matter, but said it could be
resolved without a licence
suspension.

was not aware of any safety
issues at the intersection. But she
said drivers not stopping at stop
signs was a “common” cause of
crashes in the district.
“When you are in a

difficult when you are moving
at an angle to judge distance,”
Lloyd said.
“You have to come to a stop
and have a good look – that’s
why it’s a stop sign.”
Joyce was also concerned
about the speed limits in the
area.

Late reverend gets his own asteroid

A LATE West Melton man’s
dedication to astronomy has
forever been remembered by an
asteroid named after him.
Reverend Ian Crumpton, who
died age 82 in December last
year, is a former president of
the Canterbury Astronomical
Society and helped establish
a New Zealand network of
cameras that help NASA map
meteor showers.
The asteroid numbered 32150
has been named Crumpton in
his honour.
Asteroids are sometimes called
minor planets. They are left over
from the formation of the solar
system 4.6 billion years ago. They
range in size from less than 1km
to more than 1000km.
Crumpton has a diameter
of about 10km. It is located in
the main asteroid belt, which
is between the orbits of Mars
and Jupiter, and contains a large
number of asteroids.
Wife Tricia Crumpton said her
husband would have been surprised
at the news of the asteroid
naming, formally announced by
the International Astronomical
Union.
“He just quietly got on with his
astronomy, it was quite a passion
for him. The thing I think that
was a bit sad is he wasn’t here to
appreciate it.”
HONOUR: Canterbury Astronomical Society former president Reverend Ian Crumpton has
had an asteroid named after him.
Ian had been a Presbyterian
minister, who served in Dunedin,
Gisborne and Christchurch.
While serving at a parish in
Spreydon he had built his own
observatory out of paper mache
on a wooden frame behind the
manse. Then at West Melton,
where they had moved about 30
years ago due to the area’s stunning
night skies, he built another
observatory in his backyard with
a slide-off roof.
What he liked about astronomy
was how amateurs could make
a difference to the worldwide
body of knowledge by what they
observed in the night skies.
“If you have that enthusiasm,
the sky is the limit,” Tricia said.
Ian was crucial in establishing
and operating the Cameras for
All-sky Meteor Surveillance
(CAMS) New Zealand for the
NASA Ames Research Centre.

the cameras, which are at
areas including West Melton,
Ashburton and Tekapo, to the
research centre. The data is used
to derive the geometrical orbit
of each recorded meteor in the

“Asteroids are numbered 1 to
about 50,000 roughly in order of
their discovery. The first named
Ceres was discovered in the year
1801.”

THE NUMBER of potholes
repaired by the district council
has almost doubled in two years.
A district council spokesman
said there were 7001 in the 2022-
2023 year, compared to 3823 in
2020-2021.
The increase was due to the
2021 and 2022 winter floods, followed
by prolonged wet weather
and exacerbated by increasing
vehicle weights, higher traffic
volumes and road aging.
The higher numbers followed
a steady improvement in the
number of potholes repaired,
from 5486 in 2017-2018 until
2020-2021.
“Two years of floods and a
third year of prolonged wet
weather has had a significant
impact on the network beyond
regular wear and tear,” the
spokesman said.
Further works were planned
for the coming year to support
contractors, who had been working
hard to address the issue.

“Weather permitting, we will
be aiming to achieve the maximum
spend in this area during
this financial year, which should
help reduce the occurrence of
potholes on our network and
also reduce spend in that area.”
In addition the district council
would be looking to allocate
more budget to fixing potholes
in future in the next Long-Term
Plan budget round.

A MOTORCYCLIST felt lucky
to be alive after sliding under
a truck on a wet and slippery
road.
The Templeton man, who did
not want to be named, said both
lanes of a more than 50m stretch
of Shands Rd had an oily surface
when the accident happened on
a rainy day, about 2pm on July 8.
He was concerned a lack of
maintenance on the road could
be to blame.
“It was like black ice, you
couldn’t see it,” he said.
The motorcyclist was travelling
towards Rolleston at less
than 50km/h and approaching
the Trents Rd intersection when
he braked after seeing the truck
some distance in front of him
“snaking” across the road. It was
in an 80km/h speed limit area
with a temporary 60km/h sign.
“Suddenly I was on the side,
my bike had fallen underneath
me, I hit the ground,” he said.
“I went under the wheels of
the truck, the wheels didn’t hit
me, I went between them.”
He stood up and picked his
bike off the road, limping due to
bruising his ankle. It was then

for motorcyclist
was – it felt “like an ice-skating
rink” under his feet.
A district council roading
contractor attended the scene
after being contacted by police,
and spread soil on the road.
However, this quickly dissipated
in the wet conditions.
The motorcyclist said he directed
traffic at the scene, trying
to alert other motorists of the
slippery section of road. Other
vehicles were also sliding on the
road.
The man received a response
from the district council to his
concerns about the condition
of the road through Selwyn MP
Nicola Grigg.
A district council spokesperson
told Grigg the oily surface
on the road on that particular
day had been due to a spill.
“It is also important to note
that it was raining heavily at
the time of the accident and
had been raining all day,” the
spokesperson said.
The stretch of road was due
for maintenance this week to
help remediate a surface texture
issue in the short term. Planning
on long-term surface treatment
for this section of road was also
under way.

‘My eyes don’t work, but I still see’

(Mat Austin from Christchurch),
who came to my place week after
week and took me out running.
In the early days, it was run a bit,
walk a bit, run a bit, walk a lot,
until we finally got up to a 5km
run.”
Guides run alongside their
vision-impaired jogger, who they
lead with the help of a tether.
Within three months of taking
up his new sport, McConnell
entered the Round the Bays half
marathon in Wellington, and
completed it. He went on
to compete in several more
half marathons.
The New York Marathon is
on November 5. At 42km, it will
be McConnell’s first-ever full
marathon.
McConnell said his main
guide, Noel Whiteside from
Christchurch, was unable to
make the trip, allowing fellow
guide, Anton McLean from
Christchurch, to step in.
“I’m looking forward to
achieving a full marathon
and seeing parts of New York
that you could only see if you
were running it. But more
importantly, the opportunity
to let others know that they can
do what they want to, they are
only limited by their self beliefs,”
he said.
McConnell said while he could
not see the world around him
while running, he could see images
of that world as his guide
would describe things as they
ran. These images were vivid,
as he could remember what the
world looked like from before he
lost his sight.
“My eyes don’t work, but I still
see,” McConnell said.
McConnell said as a child he
“could see enough to fake it”, and
played rugby while at school.
It was not until his early 20s he
needed a white cane or guide dog
to get around. Today, he still has
some light perception, in that he
can tell daytime from nighttime.
He is looking forward to being
in New York.
“Central Park will be unreal,
just because it is so iconic. Passing
the Madison Avenue Bridge,
passing the Empire State Building,
I’m sure somebody is going
to tell me when we do that,”
McConnell said.
“Part of it is also the crowd, the
New York Marathon is I believe
the biggest marathon in the
world, normally they have two
million spectators, the number
of people just on the sideline
supporting you, it’s hard to
imagine actually.”
McConnell is a dad of three
teenagers and works for MYOB
in Christchurch selling business
software. He has a guide dog
named Oakley.
While Oakley accompanies
McConnell as he heads into
the office, the 10-year-old black
labrador stays home when his
master goes running.
“If I’m late for his dinner,
he stands at the door in
anticipation, waiting for me to
get home.”

of Photography exhibition to
showcase local talent.

O’Carroll, from Lincoln, have
organised the exhibition.
“For some of the exhibitors, it’s
their first time having their work
shown in public, while for others
the exhibition presents an opportunity
to connect with a wider
audience,” O’Carroll said.
The exhibition comprises 64
photographs selected by the
judging panel. The photographs
are from 23 different photographers,
the majority from Selwyn,
with many photos having a
Selwyn theme.
Alongside the main exhibition,
there are photographs chosen
based on the Matariki stars.
O’Carroll said the photos had to
be based on the meaning of one
of the stars.
There will also be a variety of
talks and workshops offered in
conjunction with the exhibition.

• pain in the stomach that may sometimes occur unrelated to meals or

what we could, or should do to improve
the environment and protect it for future
generations? Me too.
Unfortunately, the environment isn’t
in the condition it should be. This is due
to decisions of the past, which were well
intentioned but lacked the science and
technology that we have now, which we
can’t ignore.
Now’s not the time to point fingers,
instead we need to work together – and
fast – to turn the tide of environmental
degradation in some parts of our region to
protect our water, land and air, and to
improve biodiversity.
Canterbury Regional Council
(Environment Canterbury) is responsible
for enforcing the rules that dictate
how Cantabrians use and enjoy the
environment.
Over the next 18 months we will be
working to write and update a number of
long-term and strategic plans to reflect
the directions set by Government, meet
the expectations of mana whenua and
the wider community, and to respond to
climate change.
The changes we make to these plans will
have an impact and will give us a better
chance at safeguarding the environment
for the future. We’ve got a lot of ground
to cover – and we can only do it well with
your help.

The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in
the nutrition and health of older women.
Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain
muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with
poor nutrition in older adults.
We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate
in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health
effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep.
We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink
twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet
(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11
hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in
supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs
involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs).

400-plus goals to
help beat cancer
A ROLLESTON ice hockey player has
scored more than 400 goals for a good
cause.
Ashton Whittle, 8, has so far raised $453
for the Canterbury West Coast Cancer
Society to help fund free services for
people with cancer.
Ashton took part in the society’s Shoot
for the Moon challenge to score 384 goals
and raise $384. Why 384? Because the
moon is about 384,000km away from the
Earth.
The goals were counted during his
Saturday games for The Spiders at the
Alpine Ice Rink in Waltham, at his weekly
practices, in his practice goal at home, and
on his air hockey table.
“Mum found out about the challenge and
asked me if I’d like to do it,” Ashton said.
“I thought that would be fun because I
like shooting goals in ice hockey.”
Ashton’s mum Anna Wilson also plays
ice hockey. She said apart from Ashton’s
great-aunt having had cancer as a teenager,
their family has not been directly affected
by the disease.
“It’s good to try and do something for
other people,” Wilson said.
Ashton started ice skating when he was
only two and has played ice hockey since
he was four.

Keeping safe when
driving on an icy road
WINTER HAS arrived in Aotearoa and
along with chilly weather and earlier
nights, challenging driving conditions are
unfortunately part of the package. It is
important to plan ahead, stay alert, slow
down, and drop back.
One of the main scenarios to prepare
for if you are driving during the winter
months is ice on the road. Ice can be
particularly hazardous in sheltered areas
of the road where it might not thaw during
the day, or after a flurry of snow when it
may be thicker. You may not even be able
to see it on the road.
If it has been snowing where you live,
along the route you are planning to drive,
or at your destination and you can’t avoid
travelling, go slow on the roads.
Other things you can do to increase
your safety on icy days include:
• Increasing your following distance
behind other vehicles so you have more
time to brake or react to other road
users.
• Avoiding braking suddenly or
accelerating rapidly.
• Giving your brake pedal a few gentle
taps rather than one hard push to avoid
skidding.
• Remembering to carry snow chains
and putting them on your vehicle when
necessary.
• Checking the weather before you drive.
If it is looking particularly bad, avoid
driving if possible.
It is important to make sure the tyres
on your vehicle are appropriately inflated,

CONDITIONS: Driving during winter,

you quickly.

Koru Games set to be biggest yet
REGISTRATION for the Koru
Games primary schools’ sports
tournament has gone live, with
record numbers anticipated
for the September three-day
event.
The games is in its ninth year,
with several changes planned.
Organiser the Selwyn Sports
Trust is hoping to break the
500-team entry mark for the first
time and build on the atmosphere
at each of the four sport
hubs.
Said sports trust general
manager Doug McSweeney: “We
are very excited about getting
registrations live as we have been
working on planning the games
for several months.
“We’ve introduced a new
registration and draws system
this year on the Sporty platform,
which many schools are familiar
with, and this will allow them to
see an overview of all the sports
they have entered.”
Last year 74 schools from
across the South Island entered
just over 400 teams across 16
sports. With the addition of
wheelchair basketball and cross
country, a tweak to the venue
hubs, and a new draws system,
the capacity has increased to
more than 500 teams. Just
over 300 teams have already
registered.
“Traditional sports are very

popular like netball, hockey,
volleyball, touch, football,
basketball and tennis. However,
some new and emerging sports
are really growing in popularity

to enter teams and grow
participation,” said McSweeney.
“The four hubs – two based
in Lincoln, one in Prebbleton
and one in Rolleston – are an
important element in the success
of the games. The atmosphere
created by the teams and
spectators is always so positive
and energetic.”
The games was started by the
sports trust in 2014 with a focus
on participation and enjoyment
for year 7 and 8 pupils.
Said McSweeney: “We
acknowledge that competition
is important, but we also place
focus on playing within the spirit
and enjoyment of the game.
“This year we are introducing
a new award called the John F
Reid Memorial Award, which
will acknowledge the team who
demonstrates the true spirit of
the games.”
Reid was instrumental in the
formation of the games, and the
vision behind the sports trust
family.
Said McSweeney: “There are
so many people from the Selwyn
region, and wider Canterbury
community, that give their time
to ensure this event is run to
the highest standard, and we
simply couldn’t do it without
them. We are so thankful for
their contribution year after
year”.

Selwyn Awards People’s
Choice voting open
The countdown to one of the most exciting nights on Selwyn’s social calendar is on.
The Selwyn Awards 2023, presented by IPORT Business Park, is held every second
year and recognises the outstanding work and achievements of businesses,
community organisations and individuals across the district. Voting for the People’s
Choice Award is currently open until 23 July.
A record breaking 148 nominations were received for this year’s awards, across
10 different categories. Entries range from dedicated volunteers helping protect
and promote the local environment or heritage of Selwyn, through to inspirational
businesses which are diverse and inclusive, and young people doing amazing
things. All award nominees are also eligible for the People’s Choice Award and
people can vote for one nominee per category.
The Awards Gala will be held at the Selwyn Sports Centre on 5 August and will be
hosted by one of Aotearoa’s favourite television personalities, Hilary Barry.
People’s Choice Award votes can be cast on the Selwyn Awards website,
selwynawards.co.nz.
Stay safe at Kidman Street and Rolleston
Drive intersection
Drivers are being urged to take care to keep yourself and others safe when turning at
the Rolleston Drive, Kidman Drive intersection.
New centre line markings have been installed along the right turning bay on Rolleston
Drive following a series of close calls and reported incidents with drivers turning from
Kidman Street crossing the centre line to access the outside turning lane at the traffic
signals with SH1.
These markings have been installed to discourage drivers from cutting through the
turning bay, risking head-on crashes.
Motorists are also being encouraged to take care and work together to keep everyone
safe and the intersection flowing.
To do this, please:
• Do not cross the yellow line along the edge of the right turning bay.
• Do not drive through the turning bay to get to the traffic signals.
• The turning bay is for vehicles to wait to turn right into Kidman Street.
• The painted median is for larger queued vehicles to wait in to turn right into
Kidman Street
• If you’re in a queue, please do not block the intersection — leave space for
turning traffic.
• Where possible, vehicles should look to fill both lanes at the traffic signals evenly.
• Larger vehicles, please leave enough room to negotiate the lefthand turn out of
Kidman Street

Have your say on the Draft Spatial Plan
Selwyn residents are encouraged to share their thoughts in the consultation for
Greater Christchurch’s Draft Spatial Plan, which closes soon.
The draft plan provides a blueprint for how future population and business
growth will be accommodated in the Greater Christchurch area over the next
several decades.
It has been developed by the Whakawhanake Kāinga Komiti (Urban Growth
Partnership for Greater
Christchurch), following strong
community input during the
Huihui Mai — let’s come together
engagement earlier this year.
More than 7,000 responses to the
Huihui Mai survey were received
with 20% of those coming from
Selwyn residents.
The survey provided clear signals
on ways Greater Christchurch
could grow to meet the needs of
current and future generations and
address challenges of population
growth, housing affordability and
climate change. People are now
being asked if the plan is on the
right track.
The Draft Spatial Plan can be viewed, and submissions can be made online at
greaterchristchurch.org.nz before 23 July.
Reminder to register your dog
Don’t forget to register your dog this month!
During the month of July, all dogs aged three months
and over that live in Selwyn must be registered with the
Council to avoid having to pay the full registration fee or
any penalties. This includes working dogs.
People can register their dog online, make a direct
internet transfer, or visit a Council service centre. For
more information, visit selwyn.govt.nz/dogregistration.
People can also use the Dogs Online service through
the Council’s website to add a new dog, remove a dog
or update their personal details.
Dog registration fees help to pay for a range of Council
services and facilities available for your four-legged
friends, including dog safety education programmes
and microchipping clinics, reuniting lost or wandering
dogs with their human friends or finding them a new

Blakes Road is closed to southbound traffic (travelling away from Christchurch)
9am–4pm daily between Tancreds Road and Robinsons Road for maintenance.
Maintenance is being done on the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge with night works
on Thursday (20 July). The bridge will be closed for up to one hour at a time from
8pm–6am, reopening to let traffic through on the hour every hour. This work is
weather dependent. Updates will be post on the Council Facebook page if this is
delayed. Malvern Hills Road is closed from Waianiwaniwa Road
to Auchenflower Road for tree removal. Birchs Road is oneway
from Tancreds Road to Robinsons Road for maintenance.
Stop/Go controls are in place for drainage improvements on Bellam Road at the
Robinsons Road intersection. Reduced speed limits are in place for maintenance
on Ahuriri Road from SH75 to Park Hill Road; Bellam Road from Cross Road to

WAIHORA AND Southbridge
will have equal motivation to go
one better than last year in their
semi-final on Saturday.
The second and third-placed
sides will face off for a place in
the Coleman Shield final, while
unbeaten Prebbleton will host
shield-holders Darfield in the
other semi.
Waihora and Southbridge
failed to make the final last
season, losing to Prebbleton and
Darfield respectively in the semifinals.
But Prebbleton claimed top
spot last week with their second
win over Waihora in a 27-13 topof-the-table
clash.
Prebbleton ran out to a 14-0
lead early in the first half, with
Waihora playing catch-up for
much of the game. Although the
Magpies dominated possession
and territory for large periods,
they were unable to execute
when it mattered.
Waihora head coach Ross
Soper believes his team have
what it takes to make the final
after an agonising 28-27 defeat
to Prebbleton in last year’s semifinal.
“We would have preferred
to finish at the top, but we’re
just grateful we’re in the finals.
Prebbleton can beat us a couple
times throughout the season but
hopefully we can meet them in
the final for another shot.”
Waihora have the opportunity
to play their last three games at
Rhodes Park, with the club hosting
the Ellesmere finals day next
weekend.
But it will be a big task to beat
in-form Southbridge who have
compiled a mammoth 255 points
in their last five games.
Said Soper: “A big focus is limiting
Southbridge this week.
“Defence is all attitude. It’s
just about making sure we are
switched on and execute. If
there’s no performance this
week, there’s none next week.”
Darfield snuck into the playoffs
in spite of their 67-35 loss to
Southbridge at the weekend,
largely due to Lincoln-Rolleston’s
surprise 22-12 win over West
Melton.

Avoiding plastic – rural
households leading the way

We’re mid-way into plastic-free July,
a campaign that began in Australia in
2011 and now inspires 100+ million
participants in 190 countries. It
advocates for the end of single-use
plastics. With great synchronicity, from
1 July single-use plastic produce bags
were banned from NZ supermarkets, in
a move expected to remove 150 million
bags from circulation every year.
Why am I telling you these things?
Well, because you may not have noticed
– and that’s a good thing.
Rural households are better placed
than most to avoid single-use plastic.
After all we’re not typically buying
take-out food and drinks each day on
the way to the office. We can’t just pop
by the supermarket for small amounts
of groceries when it’s so far away. Fastfood
delivery?! Forget it! We’re probably
already buying in bulk, and relying on
large storage and fridge/freezers. And,
crucially, growing our own.
These are all smart habits. Townies
got a reminder of them too, during
lockdown.
Being intentional about how you shop,
and how often, leads to great unexpected
savings – not only in money, petrol, and
the amount of packaging to deal with,
but also savings in time.
For example, for years bulkfood
stores encouraged people to BYO
containers, and usually give discounts
for this. Supermarkets used to site
hygiene concerns, but now embrace the
approach. The time-saving reward for
people shopping like this is that you get
home and there’s no double-handling
because of packaging – straight from the
car onto the shelf. Bonus!
A sobering exercise is to monitor
your rubbish and recycling bins for a
month. How can you avoid getting the
things you’re putting in there? If there’s
some items that you just can’t source
in another way, use consumer power
– email the manufacturer and retailer
about their packaging.
You could also check out the plasticfree
July website, an excellent source
of resources, with categories of tips
for work, school, events, business,
community and local government, as
well as how to get started at home.
One category that’s not there, is rural
households. That’s because we’re already
one step ahead.

Simple tips for lawn
mower maintenance
During the colder months you won’t need to
use your lawn mower as often. If you are mowing
your lawns remember to set the blade at a higher
level as the ground will be softer.
Some basic steps for winter lawn mower
maintenance ensures you get not only many years
of service from your lawn mower can reduce
maintenance costs during its life.
Before winter, give the mower a good clean.
With the gas tank empty, turn the mower on its
side. Remove any debris that may be wrapped
around the blade or caked up on the underside
of the mower deck. Spray the underside of the
mower deck hard with a garden hose to loosen
dirt and dried-on grass. Scrub with a soft brush
and soapy water, then rinse.
Clean or replace the air filter once or twice a
year, especially before winter. Replace paper filters
when they look dirty (keep a few on hand) and
see your local mower shop for supplies. Always
ensure you have the right filter for your brand
and make of mower. Plastic foam filters should
be removed and washed with warm, soapy water
and air dry thoroughly. Then work about two
tablespoons of clean mower oil evenly across the
filter to lightly coat it.
After you’ve used the mower for the last time
empty the fuel tank by letting the engine run until
it’s out of fuel. Leave the fuel tank empty until
spring. With the fuel tank empty, remove the oil
fill cap (if applicable) and turn the mower over to
drain the engine oil into a suitable container for
recycling.
You can replace the spark plug before you put
your mower away for the winter. Disconnect
the spark plug wire, then remove the existing
spark plug with a spark plug socket. To ensure
you purchase the right replacement plug, write
down the code on your existing plug.
Keep the blade sharp. Winter is a good
time to remove blades and give them a
sharpen and to also ensure nuts and
bolts that attach the blades are not
showing signs of being worn.

To grow tasty herbs, treat ‘em mean
To grow the best herbs,
water and feed them
less, writes James
Wong
WHEN IT comes to growing
your own, it’s hard to find
a better bang for your buck
than with herbs. Not only are
they gram-for-gram the most
expensive crops in the fruit and
vege aisle, but in most cases they
are also hands down the easiest
to grow. And, for a range of
solid, scientific reasons, they will
have measurably stronger flavour
than almost anything you can
buy in the supermarket. So here
are a botanist’s simple tricks to
grow herbs for truly unbuyable
flavour.
To know how to improve the
levels of flavour compounds in
herbs, you first have to understand
why on earth the plants
are spending time and energy
producing these in the first place,
and the answer may surprise
you. They are chemical weapons.
Unlike animals, plants can’t
run or hide from environmental
threats, so they have developed a
different evolutionary strategy in
the form of chemical shielding.
These compounds can cause

Numerous herbs,
such as rosemary,
mint, thyme, sage,
oregano, parsley,
coriander and
chives, can be
grown all year
round.
Chives are a staple
garden herb, which add a
fresh onion and/or garlic
flavour to salads, sandwiches
and cooking.
Two main varieties are
available – common chives
and garlic chives. Both
their leaves to be so strongtasting
as to repel herbivores,
possess powerful antimicrobial
effects to fight off fungal and
bacterial infections, and even act
as a chemical shield to combat
the damage from UV radiation.
In fact, when it comes to much
of plant-based medicine, it is
this very defence system that we
are hardy and happily grow
throughout the year.
Common chives grow
to about 30cm and have
a purple flower through
the summer months.
The mild onionlike
flavour makes
it a popular herb for
all-year-round use.
Garlic chives are
taller than the other
varieties of chives and grow
to 40cm.
Also a hardy perennial,
these chives have white
flowers all summer. The
leaves of these chives have a
sweet garlic flavour.
Plants can be purchased
from garden centres all
are hijacking and deploying in
our own bodies. As humans, we
evolved a universal appreciation
for the flavour and scent of these
compounds because, despite
being often produced by plants
as toxins, they can confer health
benefits when small amounts are
used.
The ingenious thing is that
year round.
You can grow chives from
seed but it is very slow and not
recommended if you want quick
results.
Plant in free draining soils in
full sun to get maximum growth
and flavour.

and do add a sweeter
they are grown under the slight
stress of a suboptimal environment.
In a home setting, this
basically means being lazier, and
watering and feeding far less.
Happy days.
Another factor that determines
the level of these compounds
is UV intensity. The more solar
radiation these plants are under,
the more protective compounds
they will make to shield their
cells from damage. This means
you should treat them to the
warmest and sunniest spot your
plot has to offer. As window glass
can filter pretty much all UVB
light, simply planting them on
an outside windowsill rather
than an inside one can make an
astonishing flavour difference.
Finally, growing them in the
ground – or at a pinch in a soilbased
potting mix – rather than
in pots, will provide them with a
wider profile of minerals, many
of which are essential building
blocks for flavour compounds.
This means you don’t have to
splash out on fancy pots or
high-nutrient potting compost.
It really is a case of ‘‘treat them
mean to keep them keen’’ if you

transmission does a fine job and
is an understated contributor to

On thing that strikes you
when stepping into the passenger
compartment is just how small
it is. There’s a reason why this
hatch is called a Mini? If you are
used to driving a larger vehicle
it takes a while to adjust. It’s a
comfortable two-seater with
enough room for a couple of
smaller types to shoehorn their
way into the back seat and park
up for short trips. Being in this
confined space, especially if you
are even slightly claustrophobic,
wouldn’t be pleasant.
The cabin is modern and tips
its hat to some of the traditional
Mini switchgear, but brings it
into the 2lst century. All round
visibility is good for a relatively
low-slung car, although it can
make entering and leaving the
vehicle a challenge, if you aren’t
as lithe and nimble these days.
You’ll need to travel light and
pack clever, as the rear hatch is
tiny. Depositing a decent size soft
overnight bag consumes most of
the available luggage real estate.
This one of the more lavishly
equipped cars in its class and so
it should be with its hefty $70k
plus asking price. From whatever
angle you look at it this is a
seriously large sum of money for
such a petite car.
Mini attempts to take some
of the sting out of the price with
an exhaustive list of standard
features. These include 17-inch
alloy wheels (pretty big boots
for a small car), Adaptive LED
Headlights, an exclusive Mini
Electric interior, leather sport
seats with the driver and front
passenger seats heated, head-up
and digital dash and head-up
displays. Things are rounded out
on a musical note with a great
sounding Harmon Kardon Hi-Fi
Sound System.
The Mini E may be among the
tiniest cars on the market but
its big on safety with a rear-view
camera, while Parking Assistant
takes the guess work out of
edging the vehicle in and out of
the tightest parks. This and its
compact dimensions make it

Police say the 25-year-old
from Burnham recorded 1026

A DARFIELD farmer has
spoken of watching a man leap into
the flooded Hawkins River to try and
save himself after a helicopter winch
rescue operation failed.
Rod May had taken his tractor to
the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and
reach the middle-aged man who had
been clinging to the branches of a tree
in the rising waters on Sunday night.
The man had driven into the
flooded river, escaped from his car
and ca led emergency services from
his ce lphone which he managed to
keep with him.
Ultimately, a second helicopter
winch operation plucked the man
to safety after he was swept downstream.
It was a happy ending to the
ordeal which had lasted more than
three hours. The rescue was among
several in Canterbury on Sunday in
flooded rivers.
May said he and his family had just
had dinner when a neighbour alerted
them. Arriving about 8.50pm, he saw
the floodwaters were too high for the
tractor, however, he used its lights for
i luminating the site where the man

four times by youth believes a
family group conference was a
waste of time.
The meeting involved one
of the teens, a 13-year-old,
his family, Oranga Tamariki,
police and four other victims,
including another dairy
owner.
Facilitated by Oranga
Tamariki, youth justice family
group conferences are
intended to help youth take
responsibility and leave them
with a plan for the future.
While the victims could
speak a the meeting, Sangeet
Mehta said the decision had
already been made as to what
would happen with the youth.

A BAR patron who won $1200
on the pokies may have been
targeted by thieves moments after
she co lected the money.
A group of men who were in
the bar a the same time are the
focus of police inquiries. It is
believed they watched her being
paid, and then quickly swooped.
The incident happened at The
Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln
two weeks ago.
After she was paid out a the
bar, the men who had been
si ting nearby went over and
congratulated her. While she was
distracted the money disappeared
from her handbag. She only
realised it was gone after she left
the hotel.
Police have taken CCTV
security camera footage from the
hotel which shows the men going
over to the woman and mobbing
her in a congratulatory way. The
footage also captures a hand from
one of the men going towards the

Building a warm, energy
efficient healthy home
Six essentials to think about when you are building a new home
1. Site position A home built with a
northerly aspect to make use of the sun
and protected from prevailing winds will
be warmer and more efficient. If possible
check your building site at different times
of the day to see where and how the sun
hits the property as well as looking out for
any low lying areas.
2. Sun According to energywise.
govt.nz, the sun sends 500 Watts of heat
through each square metre of unshaded
window on sunny winter days. That’s a
tremendous opportunity to harness the
sun’s energy for your home. Adding solar
panels to your roof is another form of
utilising the sun to convert into power
for your home. Choosing a house plan
that is designed to make use of the sun’s
energy will help reduce your power bills
and create a warmer, healthier home
throughout the year.
3. Size & Shape Size, they say, is
everything. However, you can have a
bigger home that is both warm and
healthy. The shape of your home will also
help determine its ability to retain heat and
its energy efficiency. Complex designs will
require more planning and creativity when
it comes to heating. Things to consider
are the internal wall and ceiling height;
number, size and placement of windows;
as well as the shape and flow of rooms.
Also, think about the areas you plan to
use. Generally, the smaller and simpler
the shape of the house, the easier it will
be to heat and therefore be more energy
efficient.
4. Heat Retention This requires
not only good design but also making
good use of the available energy efficient
building products available on the market.
Ways to improve heat retention include a
high level of insulation in walls, ceilings
and flooring – above the required building
code, double glazing with insulated
framing, minimalising plumbing and
electrical services in external wall cavities
and creating airtightness for external
doors.
5. Thermal mass This is a form of
passive heating. Thermal mass is a solid
material such as concrete, which absorbs
the sun’s energy during the day and then
releases that energy in the form of heat
when temperatures drop. Use tiles in front
of doors and floor-to-ceiling windows to
help harness additional heat.
6. Heating Along with an excellent
northerly aspect and appropriate
insulation, the planning and installation
of an energy efficient heating system is
essential – this could be a combination
of heat pump and log/pellet/gas fire or a
central heating system. Consider the size
of your home and the day-to-day use of
the rooms. Look for products that have an
energy star ratings.

Your family’s health is important
during winter as damp cold houses
can have a huge effect particularly for
the very young, elderly and those who
are ill. Make sure your home is warm,
ideally between 18 and 21 degrees.
Reducing the draughts in your home
will help as they are a major way that
buildings can lose heat by up to 25
per cent. Close the curtains when the
sun goes down and trim any trees that
prevent the sun getting into your home.
Keeping your home dry is also very
important. The average family home
can produce around 12 litres of water
a day. A portable dehumidifier can
remove moisture and ideally should be
placed in the coldest part of your home.
Reducing the amount of moisture
helps with people who are allergic
and prevents mould, moisture, and
condensation on the windows. In-home
ventilation systems replace the damp
air inside your homes with dry, filtered
air controlling condensation and excess
moisture.
There is plenty of information online
about the different brands and sizes.
Try not to dry clothes indoors as this
creates moisture in the air. Drying
them outside is not only free from the
cost of electricity but sunlight kills
bacteria, making your clothes healthier
for you and your family. If it is raining
use a shed or garage as an alternative.
If you use a clothes dryer, make sure
your clothes are properly spun first and
either vent it outside or leave windows
open.
To reduce moisture caused by steam,
always open a window when you are
showering and when you are cooking
on the stove top. Use pot lids to reduce
the amount of steam escaping. Keep
doors to bedrooms closed at these
times as steam can make beds damp.
Finally insulation can make a huge
difference to keeping your house
warm and save on heating costs. The
Government has subsidies available,
including the EnergyWise Home
Grants, to help with ceiling and floor
insulation, draught stopping and hot
water cylinder wraps.
