single

A RISING young rock band
is set to release its debut single
tomorrow.
Former and current students
from Christchurch Boys’ High,
Christchurch Girls’ High and
Avonside Girls’ High Schools
make up the band Zephyr.
(She Ain’t Got No) Shame is the
band’s first single since forming
in 2022. It follows their success at
last year’s Rockquest, where they
were third in the national final.
They also opened the Selwyn
Sounds music festival in March.
There, they performed to
about 5000 people and shared
the stage with renowned New
Zealand musicians Sir Dave
Dobbyn, Stellar, Mi-Sex and Gin
Wigmore.

around the school every single
weekday,” city council head of
transport Lynette Ellis said.
“The pupils told us a lot of
different stories about vehicles not
stopping for them when trying to
cross at the pedestrian crossing
outside the school, because drivers
were not paying attention and
were on their phone or driving
too fast.
“So we’ve taken that feedback
and incorporated it into our
designs.”

while travelling to school and
what would make them feel safer.
Staff then presented the
proposed road safety designs to
the children and asked them for
feedback.
Their feedback, which
was gathered on post-it notes,
included: This gate is not
accessible or safe. They speed
and hurt people. They don’t
stop at this crossing. Hard to
get out of side street. I almost
got run over because the person
wasn’t looking.
Said Ellis: “It’s been a really
valuable process and the team
will now take that away and
incorporate any changes in the
final design.”
Work to upgrade the crossing,
install new kerbing, no-stopping
restrictions and speed cushions
is part of the city council’s “way
safer streets programme”.
The programme includes
a range of improvements to
make it safer to walk, drive,
scooter, cycle and bus around
the city, which will help reduce
congestion, lower emissions and
make it easier to get around.

Bridge design a big step in right direction

COASTAL residents will get a
first look at the new Pages Rd
bridge project by the end of the
month.
The long-awaited bridge was
born in the city council’s capital
works programme and money
put aside in 2020/21 Annual
Plan, but delayed nearly two
years by the complexity of the
over-all project.
The 90-year-old bridge suffered
damage in the February
22, 2011 earthquake and there
has long been an expectation it
had to be replaced rather than
repaired.
This project is not just about
the bridge but the roles contributing
streets are likely to play
in the future of New Brighton,
including allowing for increased
traffic flow in and out and for
special events, as well as mass
evacuations resulting from a
tsunami warning.
One of my main tasks since
taking up the Coastal Ward
city councillor role has been to
get this back on track and give
people certainty around dates
and progress. There have been
a lot of variables for planners to
consider and the project is bigger
than originally thought, but
ultimately it will be an enormous
boost to New Brighton and cater
for the increasing population in
the central area. This plan will
include the entry to the massive
and exciting Ōtākaro Avon
River corridor, likely to bring
world class attention not only
to Christchurch but also New
Brighton.
With the start of the project
scheduled for 2026, significant
upgrades will be made to main
streets as well as landscaping
and flood mitigation protection,
including improvements for
walkers and cyclists. We will also
be looking to put out expressions
of interest for a special sculptural
design welcoming people to
New Brighton. The draft plan
drawings of all the road modifications
leading to the bridge
will be released at the end of this
month, and I urge people to take
advantage of extensive feedback
and submission opportunities.
I will release more details about
this later.
As the city councillors will be
making the final decision rather
than the Coastal Community
Board once public submissions
have closed, the final revised and
updated plan is likely to go to
our council hearings panel. From
the end of July, the designs will
be available for public feedback
and CCC staff will be available
in person to discuss the plans.
After seeing the design, I
believe it is a big step in the right
direction but no doubt there will
be some refinement once people
have their say.

Team leader provides
books with extra life

bookbinder and as a trainer on
the construction of commercial
books, each day is different for
the city council’s preservation
and distribution team leader
Jane Hackett.
“Whether I’m organising
my team to deliver books and
exhibition items across the city,
or I’m spending time repairing
books, no day is ever the same,”
said Hackett.
Hackett said her team works
hard to make sure books are
relocated to fill customers’ holds,
and to give books that need to
remain in the collection an extra
life.
“Every library book is examined
on return and will be passed
along to my team if it is in need
of repair. We’ll determine what
needs to be done and then restore
it to the best of our ability.
“When I come home with a
huge smile on my face, my husband
can always tell I’ve been repairing
books. I love this aspect
of my job, it’s my happy place.”
Books that are no longer
needed in the collection skip the
repair process and instead are
kept for the Christchurch City
Libraries Big Bargain Book Sale
– an event planned and managed
by Hackett.
Hackett said the preservation
and distribution team deliver a
selection of books to at least 10
rest homes each fortnight.
“This is a joint effort with our
outreach team who put these selections
together, and we deliver
them.
“To encourage tamariki to engage
with books and reading, we
also deliver a range of children’s
books to low decile preschools
three times a term.”
Hackett said another significant
part of her role is to manage
the distribution of books
between the libraries, using two
trucks to visit 20 sites a day,

The collaboration list continues
as Hackett works together
with the archivists at CCL and
the city council.
“This is an important aspect
as I can provide advice on how
material can be preserved for the
future – whether this is by creating
specialised archival boxes for
loose-leaf material, or mending
books with fragile bindings.
“We work hard each day to
keep the collections looking at
their best, and to move books
around the city to refresh
collections on a regular basis
and to meet customer demand.”

bassist Scarlett Robson, 17, and
drummer Mya Cawood, 18, have
been friends since they were 13.
Vocalist Cleo Cavell, 17, joined
the band after being approached
by Robson to be their singer.
Anderson said it is quite
exciting to be releasing their
debut song.
“It has been a big process but
very happy it’s happening,” he
said.
He said it has taken awhile
because they have been learning
about the process and what goes
on behind the scenes of recording
a song.
“We want to thank Chris
van de Geer from the band
Stellar* for helping us with the
distribution and everyone at
Big Pop Records and Regan
Barker for helping us with the
recording.”
Cavell said the biggest obstacle
was deciding on the cover art for
the single.
“When you have four people
with all different visions and
styles it can take a while to agree
on something,” she said.
Originally the band was called
The Jhets but they changed the
name as people kept thinking
they were like Bennie and
the Jets. “We didn’t like the
association and we didn’t like
how it wasn’t original, so from
the beginning of this year we
have been Zephyr, which Mya
came up with and we all liked,”
she said.
The single follows the story
of a young female waltzing her
way through life in a groupie
fashion with attacking guitar
riffs, a pounding bass, powerful
drumming and a stunning vocal
range.
With three of the musicians
still at school, Anderson and
Cavell said they hope to continue
the band for a while.
“The goal is to write as much
music as we can and get it
recorded and released,” he said.

Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.

Substantial overhaul for Nissan Pathfinder

style, the latest iteration of the
Nissan Pathfinder should find
the road to success smoother
than its underwhelming
predecessor.
It borrows some bits from the
old model, including the same
3.5-litre petrol V6, but has had
an emphatic styling overhaul to
make a telling and compelling
difference. This Pathfinder demands
attention with its strong,
muscular appearance, shorter
front overhang, slimmer pillars,

reducing heat and glare.
A huge 10.8-inch Head Up
Display is standard, projecting
key information, including turnby-turn
satellite navigation, to
keep the driver focused on the
road ahead. An upgraded infotainment
system has integrated
wireless Apple CarPlay and
wired Android Auto, four USB
charging points plus two 12-volt
outlets.
There’s a comprehensive safety
package from Nissan’s Intelligent
Mobility Suite. Included is a
rearview camera, an Advanced
Drive-Assist instrument cluster
and LED dusk-sensing headlights
with high-beam assist.
A well-sorted double wishbone
front suspension and an
independent multi-link rear end
with coils, brings a fair degree
of handling composure to the
road holding table. However, the
Pathfinder’s sheer size and 2000-
plus kg kerb weight compromises
the vehicle’s handling at its outer
extremities. This comes to the
fore when driving on tight,
twisty terrain, which we have an
abundance of on our roads. The
vehicle’s handling limitations
aren’t helped by light steering.
To my mind, the latest Ford
Everest is the road-holding
benchmark model for our large
SUV market. Because it’s based
on the latest Ford Ranger ute,
it has genuine go anywhere
off-road capabilities that are
superior to the Pathfinder. It’s
okay on ski-field access roads
and that type of driving, but
little more with its average
ground clearance.
