Platform results in
reduced speeds
SAFER SPEEDS are being
achieved at one of the city’s
busiest intersections since the
installation of a platform in
September last year.
The platform was put in place
to encourage vehicles to travel
at safer speeds when entering
and exiting the Lincoln Rd,
Barrington St and Whiteleigh
Ave intersection.
They are increasingly being
used around New Zealand as a
way to make roads safer.
Following the installation
of the platform, data recorded
over a six-month period has
shown a drop in approach
speeds for vehicles entering the
intersection and they are now
more in line with
the safe system.

Dairies
targeted
in crime
spree
DAIRIES IN Woolston,
Huntsbury and Halswell were
targeted in a smash and grab
crime spree across Christchurch
early on Monday morning.
Preeti and Hermant Patel’s
dairy in Hopkins St, Woolston,
was the was the fourth of seven
premises hit from Lyttelton to
Yaldhurst.
The couple, who have owned
the dairy for more than 20 years,
have had their fair share of incidents
over the decades. About five
years ago they were ram-raided
and on another occasion held up
by a group of machete-wielding
hooligans.
This time the offenders smashed
in their dairy’s door and took a
few store goods – candyfloss, ice
creams, chocolates and a couple
of vapes.
Preeti Patel said they were
considering their future in the
business after the incident.
“It’s not fun anymore with this
problem of theft, violence and
burglary,” she said.
“It makes us really ask questions
about whether it’s really worth
it anymore, at the beginning it
was fine, I would be here alone
until close but now it’s a different
environment.”
The first of the seven raids
began at 2.45am when a shop on
Centaurus Rd in Huntsbury was
broken into. Fifteen minutes later,
the MetroMart on Sparks Rd in
Halswell was targeted.

Three golden bouts for Woolston
champions

claimed three gold medals to cap
off a successful New Zealand
amateur championships.
Joel Hill, Edward Richards
and Bobby Brown each won
their categories, while Hamuera
Tainui came away with silver.
The Woolston Boxing Club
members represented the
Canterbury Boxing Association
at the four-day competition in
Rotorua.
Canterbury finished with a
total of 11 gold and silver medals,
while five Woolston boxers also
claimed bronze medals at the
event.
In his first elite nationals,
Joel Hill beat Bay of Plenty’s
Bradley Watkins to take out the
lightweight (57-60kg) division
in a unanimous 5-0 decision. He
also took home the Parisian Cup
for the win.
Edward Richards claimed his
second national title after beating
Simba Mackey in the youth lightweight
(60kg) division. Richards
is now ranked No 1 in New Zealand
and No 2 in Oceania.
Meanwhile, Bobby Brown
overcame another Cantabrian,
Kruize Pelesa (Smiling Tigers),
in the junior men’s lightweight
(57kg) category. Brown will add it
to the cadet title he won last year.

under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.

Substantial overhaul for Nissan Pathfinder
ARMED WITH a raft of
improvements and a lot more
style, the latest iteration of the
Nissan Pathfinder should find
the road to success smoother
than its underwhelming
predecessor.
It borrows some bits from the
old model, including the same
3.5-litre petrol V6, but has had
an emphatic styling overhaul to
make a telling and compelling
difference. This Pathfinder demands
attention with its strong,
muscular appearance, shorter
front overhang, slimmer pillars,
C-shaped LED headlights and a
“floating” roofline.
Seven drive and terrain
settings are available for the
all-wheel drive system. A new
innovation is Pro-PILOT featuring
semi-autonomous driving.
Safety is nailed in one, thanks to
nine airbags, including curtain

with coils, brings a fair degree
of handling composure to the
road holding table. However, the
Pathfinder’s sheer size and 2000-
plus kg kerb weight compromises
the vehicle’s handling at its outer
extremities. This comes to the
fore when driving on tight,
twisty terrain, which we have an
abundance of on our roads. The
vehicle’s handling limitations
aren’t helped by light steering.
To my mind, the latest Ford
Everest is the road-holding
benchmark model for our large
SUV market. Because it’s based
on the latest Ford Ranger ute,
it has genuine go anywhere
off-road capabilities that are
superior to the Pathfinder. It’s
okay on ski-field access roads
and that type of driving, but
little more with its average
ground clearance.
