the two Harleys used in the
by Friday
• By Tony Simons
A $95,000 sculpture created by
the late Llew Summers is likely to
be in place at Mt Pleasant in time
for the fourth anniversary of his
death.
Flight will be put on a bluestone
base at the western end of the
causeway on
McCormacks
Bay Rd next to
the Mt Pleasant
Community
Centre by
Friday. It will be
a memorial to the
artist who lived in
the area.
It will be
before
Llew
Summers
covered until an official unveiling
ceremony is arranged.
Flight has been sitting at the Tai
Tapu Sculpture Garden but centre
manager Derek McCullough said
the community has now raised
enough money to take ownership
of the piece.
“They know we’re good for the
rest,” he said.
Summers, who died in 2019
aged 72, carved Flight in 2014
then upscaled it in bronze.
Summers’ funeral was held at the
community centre.
His art was sometimes controversial,
with many of his pieces celebrating the
naked human body and containing
strong religious messages.
Wings were a big part of his later works.
Flight has a wingspan of more than 2m,
and pays homage to the albatross.
Mt Pleasant resident Lynne Ritchie said
the community got the idea to buy the
sculpture because he lived and worked
in the area. He had many fans in the area
and it seemed so appropriate, Ritchie
said. •Transience exhibition, page 7
ONE OF New Zealand’s oldest
surviving malthouses will be
preserved for future generations
with a $72,100 heritage incentive
grant.
The Malthouse building on
Colombo St, Beckenham, was
constructed in 1869 and is the
only known example of an
intact, stand-alone malthouse in
the country. It was bought by the
Canterbury Children’s Theatre
in 1965 and has been the group’s
home and venue ever since. It’s
also used by community groups
and Malthouse Costumes.
The building is listed by
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere
Taonga as a category 2 historic
place. The grant to support
the replacement of the roof
and repair the structure was
approved last week by the city
The city council also approved
Motorcycles, war machines
• By Daniel Alvey
WHEN DEAN Graham got
the opportunity to buy a part of
history from his favourite movie
he couldn’t turn it down.
Graham, 57, bought two
Harley Davidson’s used in the
1969 cult classic film Easy Rider
off their owner near Auckland
for $740,000 about four years
ago. They now sit inside his 420
sq m man cave in Lincoln.
“He could have asked for
double and probably would have
paid because it is my favourite
movie,” Graham said.
Easy Rider, staring Peter Fonda
and Dennis Hopper, is about
two bikers who travel through
the United States southwest
and encounter the rise of the
hippie movement, drug use, and
communal living.
“I remember the first time dad
sat me down and watched it.”
His love for motorcycles
came from his dad, the late
Mainfreight co-founder Neil
Graham who died aged 71 in
2015.
“Dad was into motorbikes and
that was how mum met him in
town on a bike.”
At the time, Neil was riding
a bike from British motorcycle
manufacturer A. J. Stevens & Co.
“When dad had his AJS or
whatever out, I’d go on the back
with him and I just remember
the smell of him and his hair and
the smell and sound of the bike
and it just hooked me.”
The Easy Rider motorcycles
are one of the main features in
his man cave, which is home to
some of the 214 bikes and 29
other vehicles he owns. The man
cave is one many people could
only dream of owning. Graham
describes it as “madness”.
He has collected memorabilia,
military equipment and other
vehicles all his life and said “it’s
good to put it all under one roof”.
Since 2020, Graham and
his partner Liana Bush – the
daughter of well-known
Christchurch cyclist Ross Bush
who died in the February 22,
2011, earthquake when the
facade of a bookstore fell onto
his car while he was eating lunch
on Riccarton Rd – have been
curating the collection.
They make sure everything
has a place inside the newly-built
man cave, specifically designed
for Graham’s displays.
Bush said: “Initially (it)
HANG OUT: Dean Graham
and partner Liana Bush in
front of the bar inside the
420 sq m man cave.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
started out as wanting an area
to put Dean’s motorbikes and
somewhere for him to have like
his own kind of space adjacent
to the family home. So it started
off as a small sort of project
and went on to be the 420 sq m
build.”
The man cave now dwarfs the
family home.
Said Graham: “It’s been fun.
It’s been long. It’s been two-anda-half,
nearly three years.”
The cave is almost finished
and, when it is, the plan is to
take groups through to see the
collection.
“I think it’s great, you know,
and when they come, all I say to
them is it’s simple if you want
to come and see it, there will be
a bucket at the door. Gold coin
donation, and then we’ll donate
it to charity.”
Graham has become known
for his philanthropy, which
included buying a full-size
cardboard Lamborghini in 2021
for $10,420 which was donated to
Starship Children’s Hospital.
COLLECTION: Dean Graham spent for $740,000 on two Harley Davidson’s from the film Easy Rider starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. He also
owns a Mil 34C Hermit light helicopter, which once belonged to the Nigerian Air Force.
Below – Motorcycles and film props, including a life-sized Deadpool mannequin from the Marvel movie, adorn Dean Graham’s man cave. His collection
of vehicles includes a former US Army Humvee.

– and the ultimate man cave
He sold the cardboard replica
for $2025 and donated the
money to Mike King’s mental
health charity I Am Hope.
Graham often pays for people’s
groceries at the supermarket
checkout when he sees the need.
“It’s not about them going oh
look, thank you to me. It’s just
making them think, hey, we’re
all on the planet, we’ve all got
different channels we’re going
down, but we’re all here and we
all care.”
Outside the man cave, a number
of incredible items can also
be found in his backyard.
He owns a flying 3/4 replica
P51 Mustang single-seat fighter
plane built in Loburn. It’s
mounted on a steel post and has
been painted blue
and red to look
like actor Tom
Cruise’s P51.
Inside the
cockpit,
there
is a
mannequin
dressed like
Cruise’s
character
Pete
Mitchell,
known as
‘Maverick’,
from the film
Top Gun.
Also on his
lawn is a Land
Rover on a stump and a Mil 34C
Hermit light helicopter once
used by the Nigerian Air Force.
Graham also has a High Mobility
Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle,
known as a Humvee, which
was used by the United States
Army during the Iraq War.
As you enter his man cave
there is a workshop for his
bikes, a helmet room, and
a wall full of old skateboards,
many of which
were Graham’s when he was
growing up. Moving through
the cave, it becomes much more
homely – with a bar, sunken
lounge and a Volkswagen Kombi
van, which has been converted
into a DJ booth.
On either side of the lounge
area, there are display cases with
more motorcycles, one of which
is a bike designed by New Zealand
freestyle motocross
rider Levi Sherwood. It was
made for a specific trick – a
double forward flip – and
was the first bike Sherwood
ever built.
Said Graham: “The fuel
tank is only big enough
for a specific run time.”
Going through the rest of
the cave there are a number of
cars, including a rare replica
1965 Shelby Daytona American
sports-coupé and a Holden A9X
Torana.
He also has many motorcycles
mounted on the wall, some of
which he has raced or used on
the farm.
“I’m glad I kept them all
because they are important to
me.”
Graham said he can look at
them and remember his past.
“Some people have photo
albums I just keep the bikes and
know what each one means.
“This cave is just a whole lot of
photographs of my life and how
much fun I’ve had and it’s only
just begun.”
Lady Tan’s Circle Of Women by Lisa See
In 15th century China two women are born under the same sign, the Metal Snake.
But life will take the friends on very different paths. According to Confucius,
‘an educated woman is a worthless woman’, but Tan Yunxian - born into an
elite family, yet haunted by death, separation and loneliness - is being raised
by her grandparents to be of use. She begins her training in medicine with her
grandmother and, as she navigates the male world of medicine, requiring tact and
diplomacy, she struggles against the confining world of her class. From a young
age, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses, many of which relate to childbearing,
alongside a young midwife-in-training, Meiling. How might a woman like Yunxian
break free of tradition, go on to treat women and girls from every level of society,
and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five
centuries later? How might the power of friendship support or complicate these
efforts? This is a captivating story of women helping other women. It is also a
triumphant reimagining of the life of a woman who was remarkable in the Ming
dynasty and would be considered remarkable today.
One of Them by Shaneel Lal
What would you do if you were told by the people you loved the most that the way
you were born was evil and wrong? For Shaneel Lal, this was their reality from the
time they were five. Growing up in a tiny, traditional village in Fiji, Shaneel always
knew they were different. Still, for the first years of their life, it was idyllic - playing
dress-ups in saris with their sister, and hiding under their neighbour’s house,
playing games with dolls. But from the time Shaneel started school, they faced
condemnation from their family, and then ‘therapy’ from conservative elders in
their village. The elders tried to ‘free’ Shaneel from the evil spirits they thought were
making them queer. Shaneel was kept away from the girls to stop Shaneel from
becoming more feminine, and from the boys to stop Shaneel’s queerness from
spreading to them. Eventually the ‘therapy’ escalated to beatings and torture. After
escaping Fiji and moving to New Zealand as a teenager, Shaneel tried to keep their
sexuality - and gender - to themself, but gradually found the courage to come out.
This is a story of one person’s fight for the right to live their life as they deserved -
and their extraordinary work to protect other young New Zealanders.
FLEETING: August’s exhibition at Stoddart Cottage,
Ephemeral, is by Olga Parr and Veronika Ek.
Exhibition explores states of transience
A NEW exhibition at Diamond
Harbour’s Stoddart Cottage
focuses on impermanence.
In Ephemeral, artists Olga Parr
and Veronika Ek present states of
transience, both human and in
the natural world.
Ek uses photography to draw
attention to the nature, light
and tranquility of the Banks
Peninsula, while Parr captures
moments of passing emotion and
natural beauty in pastel, watercolour,
charcoal and ink.
Both artists also embrace
aspects of minimalism: Ek in
landscapes themselves and Parr
in her regular use of empty
space.
Ek is a mixed media artist
whose practice spans painting
and photography. She moved to
New Zealand from Norway six
years ago, and was immediately
inspired by the Banks Peninsula
landscapes that feature in the
exhibition.
While she has focused
on painting in recent years,
in Ephemeral she presents the
stunning photographs that
inspired them. Through these
images of nature she seeks to
convey a sense of calm and
tranquility.
Born in St Petersburg and
living in multiple countries
before settling in New Zealand,
Parr exchanged her initial
career in astronomy for creative
work – photography, teaching,
illustration, graphic design, and
her own arts practice.
Working predominantly with
pastel and watercolour, Parr
is interested in celebrating the
beauty of ephemeral moments.
She is the recipient of numerous
awards, and has her artwork in
private collections in Russia,
Europe, Japan, USA, Australia
and New Zealand.
• Ephemeral opens on
Saturday, August 5 from
2-4pm and runs until
August 27 at Stoddart
Cottage. Opening hours
are 10am-4pm Fridays,
Saturdays and Sundays,
and most public holidays.
Rangi’s old bell on the move
• By Briar Allen
THE OLD school bell that used
to ring out over Rangi Ruru Girls’
School has returned home to
Fiordland.
The bell originally came from
the ocean liner, MS Wanganella,
which was launched in 1929. The
ship travelled between New Zealand
and Australia for about 15
years before running aground in
Wellington Harbour in 1947.
It was then refloated and
became a floating hostel in Deep
Cove, Doubtful Sound, for workers
on the Manapouri hydroelectric
power scheme.
Rangi Ruru deputy principal
Stephanie Barnett said the bell
was with the school for about 60
years.
“It is an important part of
New Zealand maritime history,”
Barnett said.
“It has not been hung here at
the school for a number of years,
and we are so pleased to pass on
the care-taking of the bell to the
trust and are excited to hear the
bell ring once again.”
The bell was presented to the
school in 1964 by Bob Round
who was an engineer while the
ship was in Deep Cove and whose
daughter Elizabeth was a student
at the school. It was placed in the
Margaret Patrick Courtyard and
served as the school bell for many
years. It then went into storage
and the MS Wanganella was
eventually sold for scrap.
The bell has been borrowed by
Billy Williams from the Deep
Cove Outdoor Education Trust
and is on a long-term loan. It will
be hung by Meridian Energy at the
trust’s base in Deep Cove.
was anchored at Deep Cove,
The Soothe Study is recruiting now.
We are looking for people with functional dyspepsia (indigestion) to
participate in a research study investigating the digestive health effects
of consuming mānuka honey.
Symptoms of functional dyspepsia include:
• pain or burning in the stomach, bloating, excessive belching (burping)
or nausea after meals
• an early feeling of fullness when eating
• pain in the stomach that may sometimes occur unrelated to meals or
may be relieved by eating.
After a two-week lead-in period, we will provide you with mānuka honey
or a honey-like product to eat before breakfast and dinner every day for
six-weeks. Two weeks later we will again ask you about your functional
dyspepsia symptoms.
The time commitment for this study will be about 10 hours and you will
attend six clinic visits in total. You will receive up to $220 in supermarket
Wave’s season a turnaround in form
Sumner has ended its
Metro Premier rugby
season on a high,
winning the plate.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
IT WAS a fitting finish to the
season for the Sumner Wave
on Saturday, rounding off their
solid year by securing the Metro
Premier plate with a 20-17 win
over Burnside.
The game marked the ninth
win, and meant the Wave
finished the season with a perfect
record at St Leonards Square.
Head coach
Gareth D’almeida
said winning
the plate was the
“bare minimum”,
after going down
to New Brighton
25-21 in the
elimination final
Gareth
D’almeida
earlier this month.
“We were really
disappointed after
the close New
Brighton loss,” he said.
“We had to reset our goals and
winning the plate was our new
one.”
In typical Wave fashion, it was
a slow start to the plate final,
trailing by two tries in the early
stages and 14-7 at the half.
ON THE RUN: Sumner first five George Worboys prepares to offload in the plate final win
against Burnside.
PHOTO: TONY BRUNT PHOTOGRAPHY
“I think we had to make some
adjustments at halftime, as we
couldn’t play how we wanted to
in the weather,” D’almeida said.
However, the Wave’s came back
in the second half, preventing
Burnside from scoring in the last
40 minutes.
The Wave not only secured the
plate, but it was also their fifth
win at home this season.
D’almeida said remaining
unbeaten at St Leonards was
his highlight of the season as a
coach.
“It was a highlight for me
personally, as we also remained
unbeaten at home when I was
coach of the colts side which went
back-to-back (in 2020 and 2021),”
he said.
“But the Lincoln University
game where we came back
against a quality side like that
was also quite impressive.”
The season under D’almeida
was a turnaround in form
compared to last year, where
the Wave managed three wins –
and just one in the round robin
stages.
Finals were largely determined
by bonus points this season,
with third-placed Lincoln
University, seventh-placed
Sumner and the teams between
all winning seven games in the 11
rounds.
While Sumner were unable
to progress into the top six,
D’almeida was content with the
team’s season as a whole.
“It was not a bad season
compared to where they won
three games last year,” he
said.
“We’ve beat quality sides like
Old Boys who are in the final this
weekend.”
However, it’s been a case of
‘what ifs’ for Sumner this year,
with the team only receiving
three home games in the
round-robin stage due to game
management issues last year.
There's the long-haired gloom and vehemence of adolescence. There's love
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
The Miller boat slip
at Corsair Bay
IN 1861, the quiet bay just
around the corner from the port
of Ōhinehou Lyttelton, known to
local Māori as Motu-kauati-iti,
acquired the English name of
Corsair Bay when a strong southwester
drove Captain Thomas
Gay’s brigantine, the Corsair,
onto the rocks there.
Motu-kauati-iti Corsair Bay’s
sheltered waters were a favourite
swimming spot in the late 1800s,
especially after the local beach –
and site of the Māori settlement
of Ōhinehou – at Dampier Bay
disappeared beneath the land
reclamation using spoil from
the 1867 Lyttelton rail tunnel
construction.
While Corsair Bay’s was a
popular swimming spot, its
shores were given over to the
colonial industries of the day,
such as an abattoir with bloody
runoff that unfortunately also
attracted the harbour’s sharks:
for that reason, among others,
it was moved to neighbouring
Motu-kauati-rahi Cass Bay
in the 1880s. Along with
William Langdown’s (later
Prisk and Williams’) brick kiln,
the bay also accommodated
Miller boat slip at Corsair Bay c. 1890s. Te Ūaka The Lyttelton
shipbuilding, with the Glasgowbuilt
paddle wheel steamer and
river ferry Avon being assembled
there in February 1860. For a
time, the Lyttelton Rifle Club,
formed in the 1860s, operated a
shooting range in the bay.
In 1874, one of Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour’s first
European shipbuilders, Malcolm
Miller, with sons Archie and
Jack, built their shipyard and
slipway in Corsair Bay. Malcolm
Miller had been born in 1838 in
Lochranza, a fishing village on
the Isle of Arran, Firth of Clyde,
Scotland. In 1862 he relocated
to Dunedin, along with many
other Scotsmen of his generation,
during the Otago gold rush.
Establishing himself initially
in Invercargill as a shipwright,
he married Mary MacDonald
in 1863. The family moved
through Picton, Greymouth and
Whanganui before eventually
settling in Lyttelton in 1874.
The Miller family’s shipwright
operations at Corsair Bay
specialised in the construction
and maintenance of coastal
vessels, with the boat slip capable
of handling craft of up to 70
tonnes. This included Malcolm
Miller’s own, soon to be famous,
racing yacht, Pastime.
Constructed in 1886, Pastime
was the major competitor for
the champion yacht Little
Wonder, a creation of the
equally renowned Sinclair
family of Lyttelton shipbuilders.
In a demonstration of Miller’s
shipwright credentials, Pastime
secured both a strong victory in
the Lyttelton Regatta of 1890 and
its status as champion yacht of
the day.
The Miller shipyard remained
in Corsair Bay for 33 years before
finally moving to the Lyttelton
Port facilities in 1907 when
the bay was redeveloped by the
Lyttelton Borough Council and
declared a ‘pleasure resort for the
public of Canterbury’.
After Malcolm Miller’s demise
in 1909, the family business
was assumed by his eldest
son, Malcolm James (‘Jimmy’)
Miller. Jimmy had substantial
involvement in property matters
and served as the Mayor of
Lyttelton from 1910 to 1913.
In 1913, the business
transitioned to his brother,
John D Miller, who maintained
control until his death in
1920. Subsequently, the family
business was entrusted to his
son, Malcolm’s grandson, Alex
Miller.
Despite the loss of a leg during
his service in Belgium in World
War I, Alex upheld the family’s
fine shipbuilding tradition for
several decades.
Known as the ‘one-legged
yachtsman’, he continued to
successfully compete in yacht
racing, taking full ownership of
Pastime in 1934.
Mercedes EQE breathtakingly quick
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
IN THE last three years
Mercedes Benz has amped up its
quest to become a luxury electric
vehicle game changer, with its
efforts being spearheaded by the
EQ range.
Among them is the futuristically
styled and breathtakingly
quick EQE AMG, one of the hottest-ever
Mercedes Benz sedans
priced at a cool $220,000.
Just months after the launch of
the large luxury EQS, the EQE is
the next model series to be based
on architecture Mercedes Benz
developed specifically for its
electric models.
Riding on a slightly shorter
wheelbase than the EQS, with
shorter overhangs and more
recessed flanks, the EQE remains
a substantial high-end luxury
sedan. Interior space exceeds
the comparable ICE (Internal
Combustion Engine) Mercedes-
Benz E-Class, including interior
length (+ 80mm) and front
shoulder room (+ 27mm). The
EQE comfortably accommodates
up to five people even on longer
journeys.
It brings sharp styling and attitude,
along with a level of standard
equipment and refinement to
what is regarded as an all-electric
alternative to the legendary
Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan.
A three-model range is
offered here and put its best foot
forward with the entry level
and attractively priced $132,100
EQE. After more power and
technology? That is offered in
abundance in the $145,000n 350
version featuring Mercedes Benz
4MATIC AWD system. Then
there’s the X-factor $200k plus
AMG 53 4MATIC. All EQE’s are
covered by a five-year unlimited
kilometre warranty and 10 years
or up to 250,000km, whatever
comes first.
The EQE 53 4MATIC+ dual
electric motors generate an epic
460 kW of power and a staggering
950 Nm of torque. Their
combined might hurtles the car
0 to 100 km/h in a mind bending
3.5 seconds – all with a handy
maximum real world all-electric
driving range of 500km. This is
around 90km less electric range
than the other two versions.
The fit and finish of the
generously proportioned
passenger compartment is
outstanding, along with a
driving position that’s close
to perfection. Both front seats
are heated and electrically
adjustable, while a panoramic
sliding sunroof lighten ups your
world and senses at the touch of
a button.
On board is the latest
generation of the MBUX
multimedia system, including
MBUX Navigation. A large
centrally mounted LED screen
includes a fingerprint scanner
to activate driver profiles. It’s
hard not to be impressed by the
quality surround sound system,
smartphone integration for
Apple and Android devices.
A smart Driving Assistance
Package includes Active Distance
Assist, Active Brake Assist
with cross-traffic function, Active
Lane Change Assist, Active
Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane,
all making for one highly active
vehicle.
AIRMATIC air suspension
enhanced the test vehicles ride
and all round poise. Rear-axle
steering shortens the turning
circle during cornering and
parking, and delivers better
steering response. Comfort for
a serious high performance
sedan is excellent, and free of the
sometimes abrasive low-speed
ride associated with this type of
model.
Handling is right out of the
top draw thanks to a superbly
designed, engineered and tuned
suspension providing prodigious
levels of grip. In fact I felt at
times the test vehicle was ‘super
glued’ to the road surface. With
the lithium-ion battery forming
part of the vehicles floor you
have the ideal low centre of
gravity. This further improves
what’s an already incredibly
well balanced and agile full size
luxury sedan.
Rating out of 10:
8; Build Quality 8;
Refinement 8; Space
8; Styling 8; Value for
