BURWOOD Hospital is making 

a plea for patients to return 

walking frames as stocks run 

low.

frames, the hospital wants any 

borrowed medical equipment to 

be returned. 

The same problem is also happening 

at Christchurch Hospital. 

Johnstone said people can 

sometimes accidentally overlook 

equipment they’ve borrowed, or 

store it away and forget about it.

Northlands shopping centre and 

the bus hub on Main North Rd, 

with key groups collaborating to 

front-foot the issue.

altercations at malls in 

Christchurch, including at 

Westfield Riccarton in June and 

in September last year. 

Other key groups involved 

in addressing the issue include 

the police, Papanui High School, 

the Waipapa Papanui-Innes- 

Central Community Board, the 

city council and Te Ora Hou 

Ōtautahi. 

Adams said the trust wants to 

make spaces more youth friendly 

and, along with the community 

board, is looking into short and 

mid-term solutions.

Community input sought 

again on future of reserve 

RESIDENTS ARE being asked 

to share their vision for the 

future of the Shirley Community 

Reserve. 

The reserve on Shirley Rd was 

previously home to the Shirley 

Community Centre. 

Damaged by the February 

22, 2011 earthquake, it was 

demolished in 2012. 

Pre-quake, the centre had 

been home to numerous 

organisations and programmes 

which enriched the area and 

helped the community. 

In place of the centre, 

the reserve was fitted with 

recreational facilities, such as a 

basketball court, playground, 

pump track and a large green 

space. 

Feedback from the 

community on the reserve’s 

future was sought in 2020, 

with 58 submitters split 

between replacing the old 

community centre or developing 

the area into a dynamic open 

green space. 

In 2021, the city council 

approved $3 million funding for 

the rebuild of the community 

centre and requested an updated 

feasibility study. 

The Waipapa Papanui-Innes- 

Central Community Board 

has since made the future of 

the reserve a key priority in its 

2023-2025 plan. Community 

board chair Emma Norrish said 

the board is keen to ensure the 

reserve becomes a place that 

enhances the community’s 

well-being, while providing a 

space for social connection.

hunt for walking frames, shower 

stools, toilet frames, bed levers, 

crutches, pulse oximeters and 

any other hospital equipment expatients 

no longer need. 

People who still have property 

are asked to return the equipment 

at specific drop-off locations

hospitals.

THE OLD school bell that used 

to ring out over Rangi Ruru 

Girls’ School has returned home 

to Fiordland. 

The bell originally came from 

the ocean liner, MS Wanganella, 

which was launched in 1929. 

The ship travelled between New 

Zealand and Australia for about 

15 years before running aground 

in Wellington Harbour in 1947. 

It was then refloated and 

became a floating hostel in Deep 

Cove, Doubtful Sound, for workers 

on the Manapouri hydroelectric 

power scheme. 

Rangi Ruru deputy principal 

Stephanie Barnett said the bell 

was a part of the school for about 

60 years. 

“It is an important part of 

New Zealand maritime history,” 

Barnett said. 

“It has not been hung here at 

the school for a number of years, 

and we are so pleased to pass on 

the care-taking of the bell to the 

trust and are excited to hear the 

bell ring once again.” 

The bell was presented to the 

school in 1964 by Bob Round 

who was an engineer while the 

ship was in Deep Cove and 

whose daughter Elizabeth was 

a student at the school. The 

bell was placed in the Margaret 

Patrick Courtyard and served as 

the school bell for many years. 

It then went into storage and the 

MS Wanganella was eventually 

sold for scrap. 

The bell has been borrowed by 

Billy Williams from the Deep 

Cove Outdoor Education Trust 

and is on a long-term loan to the 

trust. It will be hung by Meridian 

Energy at the trust’s base in Deep 

Cove.

National titles continue Kartstore 

team’s ‘extraordinary’ three years

clean sweep of the podium in 

VMR – have been highlights so 

far this season for the team at 

WKS Kartstore. 

When you consider director 

Matt Hamilton and his father 

John have 30 New Zealand 

Sprint titles in karting between 

them, their success is less of a 

surprise. 

The team, which has operated 

in Christchurch for four decades, 

guided Zach Tucker to national 

honours in VMR – his third in a 

row – Caleb Cross in Rotax Light 

and Iver Spence in Cadet Rok, 

while Henry Fisher and Aryan 

Lala filled the podium with Jack 

McGrath fifth in Vortex Mini 

Rok. 

“We have had an extraordinary 

last three years,” said Matt. 

“Along with TC Performance, 

we have won the last three Cadet 

and Mini Rok NZ Sprint titles. 

That’s every national sprint title 

in those classes since the inception 

of the 950 homologated 

chassis. And we have won five of 

the last six VMR national sprint 

titles. It is a great run. 

“I love it. Our core focus is the 

young guys. They are the ones 

travelling and chasing championships. 

I love working with 

them.” 

He said it was very rewarding 

to see their passion grow. 

“When they get in to it, often 

it is just something to try with 

the family, but to see it grow to 

a passion and see their development 

is pretty cool. And it is nice 

to help with that.” 

Let’s not forget those “young 

kids” grow up – and the WKS 

Kartstore team have continued 

to nurture them. 

It’s quite a list, but includes the 

likes of Marcus Armstrong, now 

in IndyCar; 17-year-old Jacob 

Douglas, based in Indianapolis 

and impressing in the feeder 

class to IndyCar; teenager Callum 

Hedge, who has made a successful 

start to his Porsche racing 

season in Australia; and NZ Elite 

Academy winner James Penrose. 

The list started with father 

John, who began racing karts 

in the 1970s and gained success 

overseas, mostly in England, 

before returning to start the 

business in 1981. He drove 100cc 

classes in NZ and England. 

“He started racing in his mid- 

20s – everything was done later 

in life. It was not professional 

then – just racing for the passion 

and the folly,” said Matt. 

Matt and sister Fiona grew up 

in motorsport and both raced. 

Matt raced the 2001 Rotax World 

Finals in Malaysia, where he met 

a racing team from Bahrain, who 

invited him to join them 24-hour 

kart racing in Asia. 

“Ï was meant to go back to 

New Zealand for uni, but instead 

I went straight to Oman, and 

travelled regularly to the Middle 

East, Asia, and Europe, which 

was quite exciting. There were 

no race car tracks in the Middle 

East so karting and rally were 

the focus. It was quite big and 

attracted big sponsors and backers,” 

Matt said. 

The team was backed by the 

Crown Prince of Bahrain, and 

with their help, Matt’s intention 

was to compete in Formula 

Renault in the UK. When that 

programme wound down, Matt 

returned home to race successfully 

for the Karcher team in the 

Toyota Racing series, winning 

the Lady Wigram Trophy, and 

eventually moving to Auckland 

to work for the sponsor. There, 

he met Ron Dixon who helped 

him into Indy Lights in the USA. 

“The Indy Light experience 

was amazing. It was a huge step 

up and a culture shock. It was 

more ovals than road courses. 

This was a completely new 

experience for me, unlike the 

guys I was racing against, some 

of which had been racing on 

ovals since they could first drive 

a go-kart. 

“You go to the fairgrounds 

on a Sunday mornings and kids 

are racing staggered go karts on 

circle tracks, that was the American 

culture. The cars were big

powerful V8s and it was a steep 

learning curve. 

“We were a one-car team 

with a very limited budget, and 

while it could not last, it was an 

unforgettable and rewarding 

experience.” 

Matt returned home, and 

after a stint with Team Kiwi in 

Australia racing V8s, he joined 

his father in the business in 

Christchurch, developing the 

burgeoning karting operation, 

supplying karts and parts, building 

engines, and establishing the 

race team. 

Racing has now taken a back 

seat to help the youngsters, but 

you’ll still see Matt in a race 

car where he can – in 2022, he 

became the only racer in NZ history 

to add The Wigram Cup to 

his Lady Wigram Trophy. 

Over the last decade Matt has 

been joined by Tiffany, threetime 

British Kart Champion and 

arguably the best female karter 

to grace the sport in Europe. 

TC Performance was launched, 

which has greatly complimented 

the WKS operation, providing 

one-on-one coaching and 

advanced high-performance tuition 

in and out of the kart, and 

race-craft guidance. 

“There has always been a 

huge amount of talent running 

through here. While Tiff and I 

are at races with the race team, 

then Dad is at home looking 

after the business and building 

engines. It is working well.” 

The reward is to see the development 

of the young drivers – in 

and out of the kart. 

“They are a group of young 

people who work well together, 

and share data, which is not easy. 

They get to use the previous data 

from the likes of Jacob Douglas, 

then likewise they understand 

that others will view their data to 

help us improve them as drivers 

too,” said Matt. 

“They are all such great 

kids. Jacob and Marcus, for 

instance, have both turned into 

great people. We would not be 

working with them if they were 

not good kids. That is the most 

important and rewarding part of 

what we do.”

Diverse voices encouraged 

to have input in city’s future 

FOR THE past two years 

Henry Jaiswal has been part of 

a multicultural committee that 

provides advice and feedback 

on the views, concerns and 

aspirations of the city’s diverse 

ethnic communities. 

“It’s really important that 

we have this voice within the 

Christchurch City Council, and 

have input from different cultures, 

especially from an engagement 

perspective,” said Jaiswal. 

“If you want to work for the 

community you need to hear 

from the community, you need 

knowledge of how different communities 

operate, not just two or 

three. Christchurch is home to 

many diverse cultures, so we act 

as a conduit between these communities 

and the council.” 

Jaiswal was elected chair of 

the multicultural committee last 

year, which met every six weeks. 

“We are composed of around 

13 representatives from different 

ethnic backgrounds who volunteer 

their time. Currently there 

are more than 160 ethnicities in 

Christchurch, but we try to have 

representation from some of the 

major groups including Chinese, 

Indian, Filipino, Somalian, 

Afghani, Irish, Russian, Colombian, 

etc,” he said.

and came to New Zealand to 

study aircraft engineering. He 

met his Kiwi/French wife Anne 

here, and they are now raising 

their daughter in Beckenham. 

“I think the image of the city 

has improved a lot over the past 

10 years. It’s been slow progress, 

because in a big city things move 

slowly but there’s been progress, 

nonetheless. 

“We’ve recently secured the 

Christchurch Netball Centre in 

Hagley Park, which is going to 

be a new Multicultural Recreation 

and Community Centre. 

It’s currently set to open on 

March 5, 2024 and the council 

just hired a manager to run it. 

That’s huge progress. We will be 

the first city in New Zealand to 

have a council-operated and run 

multicultural centre and in one 

of the most beautiful parts of the 

city – it’s a great achievement,” 

he said. 

Jaiswal said while there’s room 

for improvement, it shows having 

an inclusive environment 

where people’s voices are listened 

to has an impact. 

“Decisions made by the council 

affect the community, and 

they can be a powerful force for 

positive change.” 

The multicultural advisory 

group is looking for five members 

of the community to join it. 

The commitment is two hours 

every second month with the 

opportunity to provide advice 

based on lived experience.

to be installed as the first step in 

more development of Avonhead 

Park. 

The application by FC Twenty 

11 Football Club was approved 

by the Waimāero Fendalton- 

Waimairi-Harewood Community 

Board. 

The sports field lights are to be 

used on weekdays, Monday to 

Friday only, between 4.30-9pm. 

Club chair Neil Prior said it 

was fantastic to have the lights 

approved and supported, as it 

was part of their vision to develop 

the park. 

“We see Avonhead Park as our 

long-term home and we hope to 

further develop the clubrooms 

and have a community pavilion 

that is multi-purpose. 

“The lights are phase one of 

this vision,” he said. 

Prior said Christchurch does 

not have many sports fields, let 

alone ones with lights. 

“It is a big problem as lots of 

sports fields do not have lights 

and especially during winter, 

they are needed from about 

4.30pm onwards for people to 

play and train.” 

Prior said next steps include 

costing and funding for the 

lights.

gozleme 

Crispy, golden gluten-free 

Turkish gozleme can be easily 

whipped up in under 20 minutes, 

so it’s the perfect snack. The 

dough comes together very 

quickly and while it’s resting, you 

can quickly make your filling 

of choice. I love a spiced lamb 

mince filling when I feel like a 

break from spinach and feta, but 

you can get as creative as you 

like. Don’t overfill the gozleme – 

the flatter the parcel the crispier 

it will get when it hits the hot 

frying pan. 

Serves 6 

Ingredients 

Dough: 

260g (2 cups) gluten-free selfraising 

flour 

90g (⅓ cup) Greek yoghurt (or 

coconut yoghurt for dairy free) 

3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 

½ tsp sea salt flakes 

Lamb and spinach filling: 

2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 

1 small onion, finely chopped 

pinch of sea salt flakes 

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 

½ tsp paprika 

½ tsp ground cumin 

Pinch of freshly ground black 

pepper 

250g lamb mince 

Large handful of baby spinach 

leaves 

Olive oil, for pan-frying 

Lemon wedges, to serve 

Directions 

Combine all the dough 

ingredients in the bowl of an 

electric mixer fitted with the 

dough hook attachment, add 

125ml (½ cup) of warm water 

and mix on medium speed for 1 

minute to form a smooth dough. 

If the mixture is too dry, add 

a little more water and mix 

again. Set the dough aside to rest,

uncovered, while you make the 

filling. 

To make the filling, heat the 

olive oil in a frying pan over 

medium heat. 

Add the onion and salt and 

cook for 5 minutes to soften. Stir 

in the garlic, paprika, cumin and 

black pepper and cook for 30 

seconds. 

Add the lamb and cook, 

breaking up any chunks with a 

wooden spoon, for 3 minutes or 

until browned. Add the spinach, 

stir and cook for 1 minute to 

wilt. 

Remove from the heat and set 

aside. 

Divide the dough into six balls. 

Working with one ball at a time, 

roll out the dough between two 

sheets of baking paper to form a 

paper-thin rectangle about 20cm 

x 30cm in size. 

Scatter 3 Tbsp of the lamb 

and spinach filling in the centre, 

leaving a clear border of roughly 

8cm around the edges. 

Fold the dough over the filling 

to enclose. Cover with baking 

paper and very gently roll out 

again to flatten and thin out 

the gozleme. Repeat with the 

remaining dough and filling. 

Place a heavy-based frying pan 

over high heat and allow it to 

heat up. 

Drizzle 1 Tbsp of olive oil 

into the very hot pan and cook 

the gozleme, one at a time, 

adding more oil as needed, for 

2-3 minutes on each side until 

golden and crispy. Serve with 

lemon wedges. 

Filling variations 

Spinach and feta: combine 

135g (3 cups) baby spinach, 3 

sliced spring onions and 200g 

crumbled feta. 

Potato and cheese: combine 

460g (2 cups) mashed potato, 

150g grated mozzarella, a 

handful of finely chopped flatleaf 

parsley leaves, ½ tsp paprika 

and salt and pepper.

Does Mazda’s 1.9-litre diesel turbo deliver? 

MAZDA IS hoping for an uplift 

in buyer interest in two of the 

most affordable versions of its 

BT-50 ute, as it feels the sales 

heat from a host of rivals. 

Mazda’s response is a new 

1.9-litre turbo-diesel motor 

for its price-leading 2WD GSX 

and GTX double cabs, the only 

body style offered here. Can this 

motor with its modest engine 

capacity and power output add 

more spring to the BT-50’s sales 

step? 

Just to refresh your memory – 

the latest BT-50 has been around 

since early 2021. Apart from cosmetic 

differences, it is a rebadged 

Isuzu D-Max. 

Offering a 1.9-litre turbo diesel 

gives the BT-50 a major point 

of difference over its rivals with 

its low CO2 output of 205g/km. 

Mazda claim it’s the lowest CO2 

figure of any diesel double cab 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

ute on our market. This means 

it attracts a lower government 

clean car fee than most of its 

rivals. 

The 1.9-litre motor also saves 

a fair wad of your hard-earned 

cash compared to the 3.0-litre 

turbo diesel in its AWD sibling. 

The smaller power plant incurs a 

$1868 fee. That’s $3767 less than 

the clean car fee bounty on an 

AWD BT-50. 

This new, smaller motor 

capacity is exclusive to the price 

leading GSX and mid-spec GTX 

2WD. The GSX supplied for this 

road test heads the BT-50’s value 

for money charge at $48,740, plus 

the clean car fee. 

This frugal four-cylinder 

turbo diesel is feisty enough with 

110kW of power and 350Nm 

of torque. The latter is about 

100Nm down on the larger 

3.0-litre put to work in the AWD

BT-50. Despite less power and 

torque, its towing capabilities are 

only marginally down on these 

models. 

The Isuzu-sourced 1.9-litre is 

widely used in BT-50 and D-Max 

models sold in Southeast Asia, 

including Thailand, where both 

models are produced. It’s a tough 

wee motor, yet unexpectedly 

smooth and refined. Acceleration 

from standing starts and in-gear 

is brisk, but you are always aware 

that with its modest engine 

capacity it has to work harder 

for the same results delivered by 

the larger diesels powering in 

its competitors. Enabling it to 

punch above its weight is a smart 

six-speed automatic well versed 

in selecting the right gear at the 

right time. 

A generously proportioned 

cabin has plenty of front and 

rear legroom, while the seats 

are supportive and comfy. The 

instruments and controls for key 

functions such as lights, wipers 

and indicators are easy to operate 

and read. 

For a price-driven model the 

GSX lacks for little in the way 

of features and driver creature 

comforts. A touch screen infotainment 

system supports both 

Apple CarPlay and Android 

Auto, with a multi-information 

display providing key driving 

information are standard. 

This model has a host of classleading 

active safety technologies 

to help keep the driver out of 

trouble. These include Autonomous 

Emergency Braking with 

Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection, 

Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind 

Spot Monitoring, and Lane Departure 

Warning. 

The delicate balance between 

ride comfort and road holding 

is right on the mark and as 

good as you will find among the 

current crop of utes. With the 

BT-50 you get as standard class 

leading suspension refinement, 

although the firmer rear spring 

settings make its low-speed ride 

over uneven surfaces fidgety. The 

test ute cornered confidently, 

with the experience made more 

enjoyable by well weighted and 

communicative steering.
