VILLA MARIA College 

students Bridie Quayle and 

Brooke Bennett took home a 

total of six medals at the New 

Zealand secondary schools’ 

swimming championships last 

week. 

The students came up against 

each other in several races. 

Quayle, 15, gained bragging 

rights in the 100m breaststroke 

at the four-day event in 

Wellington, pipping Bennett by 

0.02sec to claim one of her two 

national titles. 

Quayle, who went into the 

event as Canterbury secondary 

schools’ most outstanding 

junior swimmer, also finished 

first in the 200m breaststroke, 

securing her second national 

title in 2min 37.83sec. 

Quayle, who swims for 

Wharenui, was second in the 

50m random medley skins, 

a series of back-to-back races 

where the loser is knocked out 

of the race each round. 

Her fourth medal was a 

bronze in the 50m breaststroke, 

in which Quayle edged out 

Bennett by 0.14sec. 

Bennett, who was named 

Vikings’ swimmer of the year 

earlier this month, also claimed 

gold in her preferred 400m 

freestyle race.

SHORT-TERM safety measures 

are needed in the Aidanfield and 

Halswell areas for pedestrian 

safety. 

That’s the call from the Waipuna 

Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton 

Community Board, which wants 

improvements to pedestrian 

access from Halswell School to 

Sabys Rd and Country Palms, 

as well as between 

Oaklands School 

and Dunbars Rd. 

The city council 

plans to make 

improvements on 

Dunbars and Sabys 

Rds in its 2024-27 Andrei 

capital programme, Moore 

subject to funding. 

Community board member 

and Halswell Ward city councillor 

Andrei Moore put forward a 

notice of motion at the board’s 

recent meeting asking for an 

investigation into a short-term, 

cost-effective fix. It was passed 

unanimously. 

“I’m not asking for anything 

expensive,” Moore said. 

“I am simply asking for 

anything in the short term that 

will help residents of all ages cross 

the road. I don’t believe it needs 

to be looked at in the view of the 

capital programme. I am being 

very mindful of the budget.”

“I have been regularly told 

since April 2022 that work 

was ongoing looking into safer 

access options but after waiting 

patiently I felt it was now 

appropriate to formalise this 

request. 

“We all want work done in as 

many areas as possible – this 

motion just helped push it 

through.” 

Moore said in hindsight he 

should have put the motion 

forward last year so it was 

formalised then. But his latest 

version includes Dunbars Rd 

while the original did not. 

“Pedestrian infrastructure 

of some description is both 

obvious and overdue,” he 

said. 

“The intention of this is 

for any form of a win in the 

short term and then to look at 

comprehensive fixes in the long 

term.” 

A concerned mother, who 

has three children at Halswell 

School, told Western News there 

has been some improvements 

over the years, but none of them 

were sufficient. 

“There have been some 

improvements made in the last 

two years, like adding the island 

to Halswell Rd. 

“But there is usually a parent 

who on their own accord helps 

direct traffic, something I don’t 

think they should have to do,” 

she said. 

She said it is good to have the 

school patrol out, but they start 

at 9am and finish at 3pm. 

“Some of my kids are 

seniors and have classes 

earlier like sport or choir 

and we live locally but I 

won’t let them walk to school 

then because it is unsafe.”

Matariki Fun Day 

The Greater Hornby Residents 

Association Matariki Fun Day 

will be held on Saturday, August 

19 from 11am-2pm at South 

Hornby School, after it was 

postponed due to bad weather. 

The fun day will consist of 

cultural performances, arts and 

crafts, food stalls and games. It 

will be held in conjunction with 

the Hornby Indoor Market. 

Forecasting fashion 

The Hub Hornby will be hosting 

its Fashion Forecast Show on 

September 14 at 7pm. The show 

consists of real people wearing 

real fashion. It is about embracing 

community, fostering support and 

having a good time. Models will 

be dressed by a specific retailer 

and take to the runway. The hub 

has previously hosted two live 

fashion shows and a virtual one.

Rangi’s old bell on the move

THE OLD school bell that used 

to ring out over Rangi Ruru Girls’ 

School has returned home to 

Fiordland. 

The bell originally came from 

the ocean liner, MS Wanganella, 

which was launched in 1929. The 

ship travelled between New Zealand 

and Australia for about 15 

years before running aground in 

Wellington Harbour in 1947. 

It was then refloated and 

became a floating hostel in Deep 

Cove, Doubtful Sound, for workers 

on the Manapouri hydroelectric 

power scheme. 

Rangi Ruru deputy principal 

Stephanie Barnett said the bell 

was a part of the school for about 

60 years. 

“It is an important part of 

New Zealand maritime history,” 

Barnett said. 

“It has not been hung here at 

the school for a number of years, 

and we are so pleased to pass on 

the care-taking of the bell to the 

trust and are excited to hear the 

bell ring once again.” 

The bell was presented to the 

school in 1964 by Bob Round 

who was an engineer while the 

ship was in Deep Cove and whose 

daughter Elizabeth was a student 

at the school. The bell was placed 

in the Margaret Patrick Courtyard 

and served as the school bell 

for many years. It then went into 

storage and the MS Wanganella 

was eventually sold for scrap. 

The bell has been borrowed by 

Billy Williams from the Deep 

Cove Outdoor Education Trust 

and is on a long-term loan to the 

trust. It will be hung by Meridian 

Energy at the trust’s base in Deep 

Cove.

Doubtful Sound, where it 

was used as a hostel for 

workers on the Manapouri 

hydroelectric power 

scheme.

THREE 16M lighting poles are 

to be installed as the first step in 

more development at Avonhead 

Park. 

The application by FC Twenty 

11 Football Club was approved 

by the Waimāero Fendalton- 

Waimairi-Harewood Community 

Board. 

The sports field lights are to be 

used on weekdays, Monday to 

Friday only, between 4.30-9pm. 

Club chair Neil Prior said it 

was fantastic to have the lights 

approved and supported, as it 

was part of their vision to develop 

the park. 

“We see Avonhead Park as our 

long-term home and we hope to 

further develop the clubrooms 

and have a community pavilion 

that is multi-purpose. 

“The lights are phase one of 

this vision,” he said. 

Prior said Christchurch does 

not have many sports fields, let 

alone ones with lights. 

“It is a big problem as lots of 

sports fields do not have lights 

and especially during winter, 

they are needed from about 

4.30pm onwards for people to 

play and train.” 

Prior said next steps include 

costing and funding for the 

lights.

Bennett was unable to compete in 

longer distances, such as 800m or 

1500m which she specialises in. But 

she managed to finish in the top 10 

in seven of the events she entered. 

Both swimmers will return to 

the pool for their clubs in next 

month’s New Zealand short course 

championships in Hawke’s Bay.

Chmiel, who was named the most 

outstanding female swimmer at 

the Canterbury secondary schools’ 

championships in March, was 

unable to compete at the national 

event due to Commonwealth Youth 

Games preparations.

framing for the verandah, and an old door 

that had been stored in Trudy’s garage was 

installed and painted. 

A new deck and manuka stake trellis 

completed the job, which has seen an old 

shed being turned into a striking feature

Does Mazda’s 1.9-litre diesel turbo deliver? 

MAZDA IS hoping for an uplift 

in buyer interest in two of the 

most affordable versions of its 

BT-50 ute, as it feels the sales 

heat from a host of rivals. 

Mazda’s response is a new 

1.9-litre turbo-diesel motor 

for its price-leading 2WD GSX 

and GTX double cabs, the only 

body style offered here. Can this 

motor with its modest engine 

capacity and power output add 

more spring to the BT-50’s sales 

step? 

Just to refresh your memory – 

the latest BT-50 has been around 

since early 2021. Apart from cosmetic 

differences, it is a rebadged 

Isuzu D-Max. 

Offering a 1.9-litre turbo diesel 

gives the BT-50 a major point 

of difference over its rivals with 

its low CO2 output of 205g/km. 

Mazda claim it’s the lowest CO2 

figure of any diesel double cab

it attracts a lower government 

clean car fee than most of its 

rivals. 

The 1.9-litre motor also saves 

a fair wad of your hard-earned 

cash compared to the 3.0-litre

$1868 fee. That’s $3767 less than 

the clean car fee bounty on an 

AWD BT-50. 

This new, smaller motor 

capacity is exclusive to the price 

leading GSX and mid-spec GTX 

2WD. The GSX supplied for this 

road test heads the BT-50’s value 

for money charge at $48,740, plus 

the clean car fee. 

This frugal four-cylinder 

turbo diesel is feisty enough with 

110kW of power and 350Nm 

of torque. The latter is about 

100Nm down on the larger 

3.0-litre put to work in the AWD

torque, its towing capabilities are 

only marginally down on these 

models. 

The Isuzu-sourced 1.9-litre is 

widely used in BT-50 and D-Max 

models sold in Southeast Asia, 

including Thailand, where both 

models are produced. It’s a tough 

wee motor, yet unexpectedly 

smooth and refined. Acceleration 

from standing starts and in-gear 

is brisk, but you are always aware 

that with its modest engine 

capacity it has to work harder 

for the same results delivered by 

the larger diesels powering in 

its competitors. Enabling it to 

punch above its weight is a smart 

six-speed automatic well versed 

in selecting the right gear at the 

right time. 

A generously proportioned 

cabin has plenty of front and 

rear legroom, while the seats 

are supportive and comfy. The 

instruments and controls for key 

functions such as lights, wipers 

and indicators are easy to operate 

and read. 

For a price-driven model the 

GSX lacks for little in the way 

of features and driver creature 

comforts. A touch screen infotainment 

system supports both 

Apple CarPlay and Android 

Auto, with a multi-information 

display providing key driving 

information are standard. 

This model has a host of classleading 

active safety technologies 

to help keep the driver out of 

trouble. These include Autonomous 

Emergency Braking with 

Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection, 

Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind 

Spot Monitoring, and Lane Departure 

Warning. 

The delicate balance between 

ride comfort and road holding 

is right on the mark and as 

good as you will find among the 

current crop of utes. With the 

BT-50 you get as standard class 

leading suspension refinement, 

although the firmer rear spring 

settings make its low-speed ride 

over uneven surfaces fidgety. The 

test ute cornered confidently, 

with the experience made more 

enjoyable by well weighted and 

communicative steering.
