GIVE BACK OUR
WALKING FRAMES
CHRISTCHURCH Hospital
is making a plea for patients to
return walking frames as stocks
run low.
Said Canterbury Allied Health
director Jacqui Lunday Johnstone
(right): “Anyone who has forgotten
to return it – no matter how
long ago – is asked to give it back,
no questions asked.”
She said as well as walking
frames, the hospital wants any
borrowed medical equipment to
be returned.
The same problem is also happening
at Burwood Hospital.
Johnstone said people can
sometimes accidentally overlook
equipment they’ve borrowed, or
store it away and forget about it.
Summers
sculpture
set to
land
tomorrow
• By Tony Simons
A $95,000 sculpture created by
the late Llew Summers is likely to
be in place at Mt Pleasant in time
for the fourth anniversary of his
death.
Flight (above) is due to be put
on a bluestone base at the western
end of the causeway
on McCormacks Bay
Rd next to the Mt
Pleasant Community
Centre by tomorrow.
It will be a memorial
to the artist who
lived in the area.
It will be covered
until an official unveiling
ceremony is arranged.
Llew
Summers
Flight has been sitting at the Tai
Tapu Sculpture Garden but centre
manager Derek McCullough said
the community has now raised
enough money to take ownership
of the piece.
“They know we’re good for the
rest,” he said.
Summers, who died in 2019
aged 72, carved Flight in 2014
then upscaled it in bronze.
$95k sculpture set to mark
anniversary of artist’s death
•From page 1
Summers’ funeral was held at the
community centre.
His art was sometimes controversial,
with many of his pieces celebrating the
naked human body and containing
strong religious messages.
Wings were a big part of his later works.
Flight has a wingspan of more than 2m,
and pays homage to the albatross.
Mt Pleasant resident Lynne Ritchie said
the community got the idea to buy the
sculpture because he lived and worked in
the area.
He had many fans in Mt Pleasant and it
seemed appropriate, Ritchie said.
Keeping hospital
property ‘depriving
others in need’
•From page 1
Said Johnstone: “However, this
appears to have occurred too
frequently as it’s deprived other
patients in need of accessing
such equipment or caused delays
in their discharge from the
hospital.
“If we don’t get some of this
equipment back, there will be an
impact on discharges over the
busy winter months.
“If anyone has any equipment
that’s sitting unused and unneeded
in their home or garage,
please return it to Christchurch
The call also applies to secondhand
been donated equipment that
belongs to Te Whatu Ora.
Hospital officials are on the
hunt for walking frames, shower
stools, toilet frames, bed levers,
crutches, pulse oximeters and
any other hospital equipment
ex-patients no longer need.
People who still have
property are asked to return the
equipment at specific drop-off
locations at Christchurch or
Grant supports new
roof for The Malthouse
ONE OF New Zealand’s oldest
surviving malthouses will be
preserved for future generations
with the assistance of a $72,100
heritage incentive grant.
The Malthouse building in
Colombo St, Beckenham, was
constructed in 1869 and is the
only known example of an intact,
stand-alone malthouse in the
country.
It was purchased by the
Canterbury Children’s Theatre
in 1965 and has provided a home
and venue for the group ever
since. In addition, it is used by
community groups and houses
Malthouse Costumes.
The building is scheduled as
‘highly significant’ in the district
plan and is listed by Heritage
New Zealand Pouhere Taonga
as a Category 2 historic place.
A grant to support the
replacement of the roof and
repair the roof structure was
approved last week by the city
council.
The grant will cover an
estimated 50 per cent of the costs
involved. The Malthouse Trust is
seeking further funding from
the Lottery Grants Board and
crowd funding via a GiveaLittle
page.
The city council also approved
a heritage incentive grant
of $21,925 to the historic 1882
Antigua Boat Sheds, for roof
repairs and exterior repainting.
NEWSLINE
The boat sheds have remained
in use for boat hire for over 140
years.
An 1885 guide to Christchurch
describes the Antigua Boat Sheds
as “… the most complete in the
colony. They have a landing stage
with a frontage of 200 feet to the
river, ladies’ waiting room and
gentlemen’s dressing room, and
besides all these easily house the
38 boats …”
“These two buildings are an
important part of the city’s
heritage fabric and social history,
and they will hold a special
place in the memories of many
people,” said city council
heritage team leader Brendan
Smyth.
Diverse input
into city’s future
FOR THE past two years
Henry Jaiswal has been part of
a multicultural committee that
provides advice and feedback
on the views, concerns and
aspirations of the city’s diverse
ethnic communities.
“It’s really important that
we have this voice within the
Christchurch City Council,
and have input from different
cultures, especially from an
engagement perspective,” said
Jaiswal.
“Christchurch is home to
many diverse cultures, so we act
as a conduit between these communities
and the council.”
Jaiswal is originally from
India and came to New Zealand
to study aircraft engineering.
He met his Kiwi/French wife
Anne here, and they are now
raising their daughter in Beckenham.
“We are composed of around
13 representatives from different
ethnic backgrounds who
volunteer their time. Currently
there are more than 160 ethnicities
in Christchurch, but
we try to have representation
from some of the major groups
including Chinese, Indian, Filipino,
Somalian, Afghani, Irish,
Russian, Colombian,” he said.
The multicultural advisory
group is looking for five members
to join it.
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2022
Aidanfield
Christian School
Aidanfield Christian School is
focused on an excellent standard of
learning for all our pupils within a
context of strong biblical values, family
involvement and an emphasis on
knowing all our pupils well.
‘Grow in Wisdom and Stature,
Stand and Be Confident’ is our motto.
We want our pupils to stand and be
confident in the communities they
will take their place in and believe
that education is a lot more than just
learning facts and figures, or training
for employment. The truths of God’s
word address all areas of life and impact
on our response to each child, be it;
spiritual, academic, physical, social or
emotional. We believe that our school
offers pupils the significant benefits of
a local school with a strong community
and family environment.
You may have heard about us, come
see for yourself, call or email to meet
the Principal.
St Michael’s
Is your child on track for high school?
Will their intermediate school option offer
their best preparation? How will you know?
At St Michael’s, we know, and why. Our
Year 7 & 8 teachers are subject specialists.
With almost 50% of our timetable
committed to English and Maths, your
child’s essential foundations for secondary
school are guaranteed.
In our classes of 10-20, we know
your child. We aim for every Year 8 to
graduate up to 18 months ahead of Year 9
expectations.
This academic rigour underpins our
wider curriculums in History, Geography,
Science and Spanish. IT literacy is
taught, not assumed, and computer use is
measured. We like teaching and talking to
our pupils!
Specialist art and music classes
are enjoyed weekly, and many pupils
participate in individual itinerant lessons.
Our several choirs, Stage Band and
Orchestra perform regularly. Sporting and
Inter-house events raise passions.
Our senior programme, Parare, advances
our Year 7 & 8 education outside the box,
from financial literacy to new sports and
outdoor ed; leadership challenges to civics
and citizenship.
To discover the best preparation for your
child, you are warmly welcome to visit us
at St Michael’s Church School. Every day is
open day!
