‘Surviving war is
a matter of luck’
THE KOREAN Armistice
Agreement brought about a
complete cessation of hostilities
of the Korean War, and
Forbes Taylor well knows the
70th anniversary of that very
important ceasefire date – July
27, 1953.
Back 70 years ago Forbes,
a former Woolston resident
who now lives at Ngaio Marsh
Retirement Village, was near
the frontline of a war that had
been running for three years.
He remembers on the night
after the ceasefire had been
announced there were flares
let off and search lights shone
into the sky above the new
division between north and
south.
“It took effect at 10 o’clock at
night. The armistice was read
out to us, and then suddenly all
the war zone lit up with search
lights and rockets and things.
It was a very colourful display
with all those lights from the
flare guns and search lights,”
he remembered the day
after celebrating his 92nd
birthday last week.
There was a feeling of
celebration amongst the allies
in the south because they had
won further ground to the
north of Seoul that would form
part of the new South Korea,
Forbes said.
The bitter conflict began in
June 1950, with North Korea
supported by China and the
Soviet Union. Talks concerning
an armistice had started as
early as July 10, 1951, but the
frontline remained a dangerous
place. Forbes said it was really
a matter of luck as to whether
he and other fellow servicemen
survived.
It was June 1953 and Forbes
had not long been flown into
Gimpo Airport, near Seoul.
He had joined the Signals C or
‘Charlie Troop’ to help service
the telephone lines that were
used by 1st Commonwealth
division troops including in the
‘Battle of the Hook’.
He remembers desperate
night-time attacks by the
Chinese, trying to capture Hook
valley territory before the July
ceasefire was called.
During this time repairs
were needed on the telephone
lines. The Chinese were repelled
by United Nations forces, he
said.
On one frontline occasion, a
shell exploded about 40 yards
(36.5 metres) away. But it could
have easily been much, much
closer.
Veteran looks back on Korean War
• From page 1
“I thought, good heavens, I
could have been there (under the
shell). I came to the conclusion:
surviving war is a matter of
luck,” he said.
Because he had arrived
towards the end of physical
warfare, Forbes spent much of
his 18 months of service during
the period of ceasefire. There
were moments of tension, but
also the chance for rest and
relaxation. While the Americans
would fly the Kiwi contingent to
Tokyo, Forbes would sometimes
push on to other destinations
including the post-atomic bomb
Hiroshima.
Later it was quite a trip home
from his period of service. He’d
sailed from Pusan to Brisbane,
where he and other troops
marched and were cheered by
the crowds, on to Kingsford
Smith Airport, Sydney, and New
Zealand. On his arrival back
in Christchurch his mum was
there. He was also greeted by
Government representatives at
the King Edward Barracks in the
city.
He is matter of fact when
relating how his mother coped
with men going to war. Forbes’
maternal grandfather, Thomas
Phillips Lloyd, had fought in the
Second Anglo-Afghan War of
1878-1880. Forbes’ father was
one of the 20 survivors within a
100-strong company caught at
‘I came to the conclusion
surviving war is a matter
of luck’ – Forbes Taylor
Passchendaele in World War 1.
Forbes is very proud of his
siblings. One older brother Lloyd
served in “Sunderland flying
boats” safeguarding convoys in
World War 2, but then died at 23,
after his return to New Zealand,
in a motorcycle accident near
Ashburton.
His other brother Ross
was involved Nasa’s space
programme. He was the first
geochemist to get his hands
on the samples of moon rock,
picked up by Neil Armstrong
and Buzz Aldrin, and brought
back to Earth by Apollo 11.
Forbes has kept up with the
Korean political standoff, and
has been part of Christchurchbased
recognition of progress
between the two sides. He and
family members including his
wife have revisited South Korea
many times.
In April 2018, North Korea
and South Korea agreed to talks
to end the ongoing 65-year
conflict.
Nurturing nature a dream come true
PASSION: Community partnership ranger Sarah Mankelow
(centre) said her job is ‘a privilege’. PHOTO: NEWSLINE
WORKING AS a ranger in the
residential red zone is a dream
come true for Sarah Mankelow.
The Hillsborough resident is a
community partnership ranger,
a role she recently started and
described as a privilege.
“Conservation has been my
passion my whole life. My dream
job as a teen was to work as a
conservation officer, so I feel
privileged and blessed to do this
work,” Mankelow said.
Monday marked World
Ranger Day. The city council
celebrated the work of all of its
rangers as the key protectors of
parks and conservation for the
organisation.
Mankelow is often the first
contact for people who have
questions and concerns about the
red zone. She works to connect
the many community groups
who operate in it.
“There are all sorts of people
doing all sorts of creative and
interesting things in the red
zone. Compost-making, disc
golf, community gardens and
restoration, nature play, the
foraging community – these
groups are all passionate users of
the red zone.
“This is a once in a lifetime
opportunity to nurture nature
right on our doorstep, to turn
our city into a wetland forest
city.”
Her role involves talking to
groups, working with schools,
and helping community shape
their green spaces.
A pilot programme is also
under way for high school
students to gain practical work
experience by working on
restoration projects in the red
zone, and maybe inspire
them to follow a career in
conservation.
National titles continue Kartstore
team’s ‘extraordinary’ three years
THREE NATIONAL titles
in key kartsport development
classes Vortex Mini Rok, Rotax
Light and Cadet Rok – and a
clean sweep of the podium in
VMR – have been highlights so
far this season for the team at
WKS Kartstore.
When you consider director
Matt Hamilton and his father
John have 30 New Zealand
Sprint titles in karting between
them, their success is less of a
surprise.
The team, which has operated
in Christchurch for four decades,
guided Zach Tucker to national
honours in VMR – his third in a
row – Caleb Cross in Rotax Light
and Iver Spence in Cadet Rok,
while Henry Fisher and Aryan
Lala filled the podium with Jack
McGrath fifth in Vortex Mini
Rok.
“We have had an extraordinary
last three years,” said Matt.
“Along with TC Performance,
we have won the last three Cadet
and Mini Rok NZ Sprint titles.
That’s every national sprint title
in those classes since the inception
of the 950 homologated
chassis. And we have won five of
the last six VMR national sprint
titles. It is a great run.
“I love it. Our core focus is the
young guys. They are the ones
travelling and chasing championships.
I love working with
them.”
He said it was very rewarding
to see their passion grow.
“When they get in to it, often
it is just something to try with
the family, but to see it grow to
a passion and see their development
is pretty cool. And it is nice
to help with that.”
Let’s not forget those “young
kids” grow up – and the WKS
Kartstore team have continued
to nurture them.
It’s quite a list, but includes the
likes of Marcus Armstrong, now
in IndyCar; 17-year-old Jacob
Douglas, based in Indianapolis
and impressing in the feeder
class to IndyCar; teenager Callum
Hedge, who has made a successful
start to his Porsche racing
season in Australia; and NZ Elite
Academy winner James Penrose.
The list started with father
John, who began racing karts
in the 1970s and gained success
overseas, mostly in England,
before returning to start the
business in 1981. He drove 100cc
classes in NZ and England.
“He started racing in his mid-
20s – everything was done later
in life. It was not professional
then – just racing for the passion
and the folly,” said Matt.
Matt and sister Fiona grew up
in motorsport and both raced.
Matt raced the 2001 Rotax World
Finals in Malaysia, where he met
a racing team from Bahrain, who
invited him to join them 24-hour
kart racing in Asia.
“Ï was meant to go back to
New Zealand for uni, but instead
I went straight to Oman, and
travelled regularly to the Middle
East, Asia, and Europe, which
was quite exciting. There were
no race car tracks in the Middle
East so karting and rally were
the focus. It was quite big and
attracted big sponsors and backers,”
Matt said.
The team was backed by the
Crown Prince of Bahrain, and
with their help, Matt’s intention
was to compete in Formula
Renault in the UK. When that
programme wound down, Matt
returned home to race successfully
for the Karcher team in the
Toyota Racing series, winning
the Lady Wigram Trophy, and
eventually moving to Auckland
to work for the sponsor. There,
he met Ron Dixon who helped
him into Indy Lights in the USA.
“The Indy Light experience
was amazing. It was a huge step
up and a culture shock. It was
more ovals than road courses.
This was a completely new
experience for me, unlike the
guys I was racing against, some
of which had been racing on
ovals since they could first drive
a go-kart.
“You go to the fairgrounds
on a Sunday mornings and kids
are racing staggered go karts on
circle tracks, that was the American
culture. The cars were big
powerful V8s and it was a steep
learning curve.
“We were a one-car team
with a very limited budget, and
while it could not last, it was an
unforgettable and rewarding
experience.”
Matt returned home, and
after a stint with Team Kiwi in
Australia racing V8s, he joined
his father in the business in
Christchurch, developing the
burgeoning karting operation,
supplying karts and parts, building
engines, and establishing the
race team.
Racing has now taken a back
seat to help the youngsters, but
you’ll still see Matt in a race
car where he can – in 2022, he
became the only racer in NZ history
to add The Wigram Cup to
his Lady Wigram Trophy.
Over the last decade Matt has
been joined by Tiffany, threetime
British Kart Champion and
arguably the best female karter
to grace the sport in Europe.
TC Performance was launched,
which has greatly complimented
the WKS operation, providing
one-on-one coaching and
advanced high-performance tuition
in and out of the kart, and
race-craft guidance.
“There has always been a
huge amount of talent running
through here. While Tiff and I
are at races with the race team,
then Dad is at home looking
after the business and building
engines. It is working well.”
The reward is to see the development
of the young drivers – in
and out of the kart.
“They are a group of young
people who work well together,
and share data, which is not easy.
They get to use the previous data
from the likes of Jacob Douglas,
then likewise they understand
that others will view their data to
help us improve them as drivers
too,” said Matt.
“They are all such great
kids. Jacob and Marcus, for
instance, have both turned into
great people. We would not be
working with them if they were
not good kids. That is the most
important and rewarding part of
what we do.”
Warming ways to tighten your belt
Winter comes with an
extra challenge. The
folks from Love Food
Hate Waste have
some tips to get
through
Cook in bulk
If you know you are going to
eat foods such as pasta or potatoes
more than one night a week,
cook two nights worth in one go
and store in labelled containers
in the fridge or freezer.
Cook once, eat twice
Use leftovers as the starting
point for the next meal. Leftover
roast chicken makes delicious
chicken noodle soup.
Make the most of your mince
Make your mince go further
by bulking it up with other
ingredients. You can add in
carrots or pumpkin, celery, leek
or mushrooms, or a tin of beans
or lentils. This is a great way to
use up vegetables that have gone
limp as well. If you are making
meatballs or burger patties,
adding breadcrumbs makes the
meat go further and will help
them keep their shape. It’s also
a great way to use up stale
bread.
Try different proteins
Meat can be really expensive
so try using different types of
protein throughout the week,
such as beans, lentils or tofu, to
help keep costs down.
Serve soup
Soups are a wonderful way to
make a small amount of food
go a long way. Not only are they
cheap, they also help to warm
you from the inside. You can add
all sorts of leftover meat, vegetables
and grains to them.
Tips on choosing vegies
Check what vegetables are
cheaper or on special – often
these are the in-season vegetables
– and incorporate them into
your meals. Or choose to also get
some frozen vegies as they are
cheap, nutritious, pre-prepared
and won’t go bad. Eat all parts of
the vegetable – broccoli stalks,
silverbeet stems and the green
part of the leek are all edible
and can help bulk out a meal
and add an additional serving of
vegetables.
Sort your storage
Bread should be kept in the
fridge or freezer so it doesn’t
grow mould. Most of your apples
and other fruit should be kept
in the fridge too. Potatoes and
onions shouldn’t be stored next
off faster.
Can I revive this limp vegie?
Lastly, if your carrot, celery
or leafy greens are looking limp
and you’re wanting them to get
crisp again you can cut the vegie,
soak in cold water and put it in
the fridge, and in 10-15 minutes
you’ll start to see it getting firmer
and crisp again.
Chicken noodle soup
Ingredients
Chicken bones/carcass (from
roast chicken) or you can use
3-4 fresh chicken frames
1 tsp salt
Pepper, to taste
2 cloves garlic, chopped or 1 tsp
crushed garlic
1 bay leaf (optional)
8 cups water (2 litres)
2 carrots, chopped or grated
1 leek, thinly sliced including
the green top
2 sticks celery, thinly sliced
2 cups cooked chicken,
shredded
250g your choice of dried
noodles e.g., egg noodles, rice
noodles, or spaghetti
2 chicken stock cubes
2 tsp mixed herbs
Directions
Make the chicken broth for
the soup by placing the chicken
carcass, salt, pepper, garlic, bay
leaf (if using) and water into a
large pot. Bring to the boil and
then reduce the heat and allow it
to simmer for at least 60 minutes.
Once the broth is ready, sieve
the broth, making sure to catch
the liquid in a bowl. Discard the
chicken bones.
Return the chicken broth to
the pot and add the carrots, leek,
celery, and chicken. Bring to a
gentle boil.
Stir in dried noodles, chicken
stock cubes and mixed herbs.
Simmer the soup for 10-15
minutes, until the noodles are
cooked. If you find the soup is
too thick, you can add more
Season the soup with salt and
pepper before serving.
Cooking tips:
Switch up the vegetables in this
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
Sportier, spacious Honda Civic a standout
A SMALL hatchback hit here for
decades, the Honda Civic isn’t
feeling the same amount love
from buyers these days, with
many seduced by SUVs.
With sales in excess of 27 million
since its global launch 50
years ago, the Civic really put on
Honda on the map. Simple and
clean lines distinguish this latest
version from its predecessor. It
is also now a sportier drive and
offers greater space, especially
in the rear seat area, along with
easier access to the cargo compartment.
Civic models start with the
price leading $47,000 Sport being
reviewed here, or the $52,000
special edition Mugen. This
makes clever use of a variety of
high quality Mugen body kit
components to create a striking
looking vehicle.
A revamped version of the
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
zippy 1.5 turbo engine is ready
to rumble with more power and
torque. It now produces 131kW,
5kw more than its predecessor
and 240Nm of torque a 20nm
gain. In isolation, not massive
bumps in power and torque.
However, collectively they take
performance up a good notch or
two, with the torque getting to
work from just 1700rpm.
In real world driving the
motor is all smoothness and
tractability. Acceleration is brisk
and satisfying and gone is the
coarse edge the previous engine
had when working in the higher
rev range.
A much-improved take on the
Civic’s familiar Constant Variable
Transmission (CVT) now
features Normal and Eco driving
modes and a user-selectable
Sport mode. It feels more responsive
and in tune with the engine,
with enough electronic smarts
on board to get the most out of it.
Generously proportioned cabin
and cargo space is among the
best in the small car class, with
a more accessible luggage area
that’s 40mm wider. The standard
60/40 split rear seat back can be
quickly folded down for more
load space, with the side-pull
cargo cover making it super easy
to open or conceal whatever you
have in the rear cargo area.
Attention to detail is evident
everywhere in the cabin, including
an instrument panel design
with minimal cut lines to reduce
windshield reflections. The
generous use of quality materials
throughout is a notable feature.
It is the most technologically
advanced Civic hatch yet, featuring
a new 7-inch color LCD
driver’s display.
In addition to large, easy-torecognise
icons and a simplified
navigation structure with fewer
embedded menus, the touchscreen
features a proper volume
knob and hard buttons for Home
and Back functions.
There’s a new single-camera
system providing a longer, wider
field of view than its predecessors
radar-and-camera based
system. Honda Sensing also adds
Traffic Jam Assist, and the new
camera- based system improves
on existing functionality, such as
more natural brake application
and quicker reactions when using
Adaptive Cruise Control.
The suspension and steering
were developed in Europe and
feel like it from behind the wheel.
It reaffirms my view, that the
Civic Sport is the best all-round
riding and handling model in
the current Honda range. The
suspension reacts quickly and
decisively to steady the car from
sudden and unsettling changes
in the road surface.
With a wide and low-slung
stance, this newest Civic feels
reassuringly well planted on the
road. However, this makes it a
bit of a liability when driving on
gravel roads. Overall, the test
car felt confident and composed
with the suspensions nimbleness
a real stand out.
