What’s the hold up at
this busy intersection?
• By Briar Allen
MOTORISTS WHO use a
busy Hornby intersection are
still waiting for it to be fixed 18
months after it was damaged –
because permission to replace a
traffic light pole still hasn’t been
granted.
The city council has been
communicating with KiwiRail
since it applied for a permit to
replace the traffic light pole and
repair the island, which sits on
KiwiRail land, at the Amyes/
Shands Rds intersection.
Hornby Ward
city councillor
Mark Peters said
KiwiRail has been
holding up the
work.
Peters is
campaigning to Mark
get the intersection Peters
fixed and a right
turning light added to reduce
the heavy traffic congestion
along Amyes Rd.
“It brings no joy, we are still
waiting on KiwiRail to give us
the permit to be able to do the
repairs that are needed,” he said.
Peters attended a site meeting
on April 14 with Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board members
Sarah Brunton and Henk
Buunk, plus KiwiRail and city
council staff.
“I was told to apply for the
permit (from KiwiRail) and that
it should not be an issue. I hear
the community’s frustration.
It is obscene that it is taking so
long, and it is a blight on the
area.”
Since the site meeting, two
more poles at the intersection
have been hit by vehicles. Peters
and Greater Hornby Residents
Association chair Kim Moss
want them replaced and the
right-hand turning signal put in
at the same time.
Said Moss: “It is a bit of a
problem. We have been trying to
get a right-hand turning signal
installed for traffic turning onto
Shands Rd for a few years.”
Moss said the removal of
parking on the street has
helped, but traffic still backs up
significantly. “The repairs just
need to be done. It is part of the
main thoroughfare of Hornby,
and it seems like no one is
taking ownership of it.”
She said it is disappointing
nothing has been done.
“I don’t understand why.
It’s frustrating, we just want a
safer community, and you’d
assume that is the same thing
the government facilities want.
Some people get impatient
waiting which can lead to people
making dangerous decisions.”
City council and KiwiRail staff
were not available for comment.

Graham Condon pools
to close for maintenance
THE POOLS at Graham
Condon Recreation and Sport
Centre are set to temporarily
close from January for two
significant maintenance projects.
Work is scheduled to start
behind the scenes at Graham
Condon in September, and the
pool hall will close from early
January to approximately mid-
April 2024.
The gym and sports halls will
remain open throughout this
time.
The city council’s
head of recreation,
sport and events
Nigel Cox said the
pellet boiler water
heating system
Nigel Cox
will be replaced
with electric heat
pumps, and the
water filtration system will also
be replaced.
“This work will improve energy
efficiency and water quality,
while ensuring that the heating
and filtering systems continue
to function optimally long-term.
We’ll also perform general
maintenance work, as part of our
planned, regular maintenance
schedule of our city-wide recreation
centres,” said Cox.
MAINTENANCE: The Graham Condon pool hall will close for
about four months from early January. PHOTO: NEWSLINE
“While the work won’t make
the pool hall look significantly
different, it is essential for maintaining
the facility to a high
standard and helping to prevent
unscheduled shutdowns.”
Several considerations were
factored into the timing of the
closure.
“We have scheduled this work
to happen over the summer,
when our outdoor summer pools
are open so they are available for
• Customers with a pool or
gym-and-pool membership
or pool multi-visit pass can
use any of the city councilowned
pool facilities.
• Members can also
request to freeze their
membership during the
closure if they prefer.
• Gym-and-pool members
can downgrade to a gym
only membership, provided
they have been a member
for over four weeks.
• Swimsmart customers
have the option of taking
lessons at an alternative
pool or freezing their
Swimsmart membership.
the community to use, in addition
to the indoor pools at Jellie
Park, Pioneer, Taiora QEII, and
Te Pou Toetoe Linwood Pool.
“This timing also means that
some of our staff at Graham
Condon can be redeployed to the
outdoor pools, and our school
groups are only affected for term
one,” Cox said.
“Our team has facilitated
bookings for schools at alternative
centres and kept all customers
informed about what’s happening
and the options available
to them.”
Contractors will begin initial
preparation work in September,
while the pools remain open.
To provide access for contractors
and construction offices, car
parking will be reduced.
“We’ll ensure customers have
priority access to the car parks
closest to the entrance,” Cox said.
“We want to thank everyone
affected by this disruption
for your patience and
understanding.”
In Brief
INTERSECTION SET TO
CLOSE FOR TWO NIGHTS
The Carmen Rd and Main South
Rd intersection in Hornby will
be closed from 8pm to 5am on
Tuesday and Wednesday. Waka
Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will
undertake maintenance on the
traffic lights at the intersection.
The work is weather dependent
and may be postponed at short
notice. A detour will be set up via
Parker St and Waterloo Rd or via
Main South Rd and Racecourse
Rd.
MORE PEST TRAPS
PLACED AT RESERVE
Halswell Predator Free Group
volunteers placed 20 more
tunnel traps at the Quaifes Rd
Springlands reserve to catch
pests. To date 300 pests have been
caught in 40 traps at the reserve,
mainly mice, rats, weasels and
hedgehogs. The removal of the
pests will help increase native bird
life in the area.
HELP TO FIX HALSWELL
COMMUNITY HUB
The Halswell Community Project
needs volunteers to help with
maintenance at the Halswell
Community Hub. It is currently
putting together a package of
improvements for the hub and is
working with the city council and
funders to resurface the car park,
replace the roof, paint the exterior
of the building and improve
access to the noticeboard and
sharing shacks.
Veteran came to the conclusion
THE KOREAN Armistice
Agreement brought about a
complete cessation of hostilities
of the Korean War, and
Forbes Taylor well knows the
70th anniversary of that very
important ceasefire date – July
27, 1953.
Back 70 years ago Forbes, who
lives at Ngaio Marsh Retirement
Village, was near the frontline of
a war that had been running for
three years.
He remembers on the night
after the ceasefire had been
announced there were flares
let off and search lights shone
into the sky above the new
division between north and
south.
“It took effect at 10 o’clock at
night. The armistice was read out
to us, and then suddenly all the
war zone lit up with search lights
and rockets and things. It was a
very colourful display with all
those lights from the flare guns
and search lights,”
he remembered the day
after celebrating his 92nd
birthday last week.
There was a feeling of
celebration amongst the allies
in the south because they had
won further ground to the north
of Seoul that would form part
of the new South Korea, Forbes
said.
The bitter conflict began in
June 1950, with North Korea
supported by China and the
Soviet Union. Talks concerning
an armistice had started as early
as July 10, 1951, but the frontline
remained a dangerous place.
Forbes said it was really a matter
of luck as to whether he and
other fellow servicemen survived.
It was June 1953 and Forbes
had not long been flown into
Gimpo Airport, near Seoul.
He had joined the Signals C or
‘Charlie Troop’ to help service
the telephone lines that were used
by 1st Commonwealth division
troops including in the ‘Battle of
the Hook’.
He remembers desperate nighttime
attacks by the Chinese,
trying to capture Hook valley
territory before the July ceasefire
was called.
During this time repairs
were needed on the telephone
lines. The Chinese were repelled
by United Nations forces, he said.
On one frontline occasion, a
shell exploded about 40 yards
(36.5 metres) away. But it could
have easily been much, much
closer.
‘surviving war is a matter of luck’
“I thought, good heavens, I
could have been there (under the
shell). I came to the conclusion:
surviving war is a matter of
luck,” he said.
Because he had arrived
towards the end of physical
warfare, Forbes spent much of
his 18 months of service during
the period of ceasefire. There
were moments of tension, but
also the chance for rest and
relaxation. While the Americans
would fly the Kiwi contingent to
Tokyo, Forbes would sometimes
push on to other destinations
including the post-atomic bomb
Hiroshima.
Later it was quite a trip home
from his period of service. He’d
sailed from Pusan to Brisbane,
where he and other troops
marched and were cheered by
the crowds, on to Kingsford
Smith Airport, Sydney, and New
Zealand.
On his arrival back in
Christchurch his mum was
there. He was also greeted by
Government representatives at
the King Edward Barracks in the
city.
He is matter of fact when
relating how his mother coped
with men going to war. Forbes’
maternal grandfather, Thomas
Phillips Lloyd, had fought in the
Second Anglo-Afghan War of
1878-1880. Forbes’ father was
one of the 20 survivors within a
100-strong company caught at
Passchendaele in World War 1.
Forbes is very proud of his
siblings. One older brother Lloyd
served in “Sunderland flying
boats” safeguarding convoys in
World War 2, but then died at 23,
after his return to New Zealand,
in a motorcycle accident near
Ashburton.
His other brother Ross
was involved Nasa’s space
programme. He was the first
geochemist to get his hands
on the samples of moon rock,
picked up by Neil Armstrong
and Buzz Aldrin, and brought
back to Earth by Apollo 11.
Forbes has kept up with the
Korean political standoff, and
has been part of Christchurchbased
recognition of progress
between the two sides. He and
family members including his
wife have revisited South Korea
many times.
In April 2018, North Korea
and South Korea agreed to talks
to end the ongoing 65-year
conflict.
Sustainable furniture sought for city’s parks
PHOTOS: NEWSLINE
PARK BENCHES, picnic tables,
bike stands and loungers made of
reclaimed or recycled materials
could soon grace the city’s parks
network.
The city council will soon be
going out to tender for a supplier
to design and fabricate the
furniture, with a heavy emphasis
on sustainable construction
practices and materials.
Red zone manager David
Little’s team will be leading the
project, which will start with the
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor
and be rolled out across the
parks network over time.
“We see a great opportunity
to reduce our city’s reliance on
imported hardwood timber and
steel, by investigating the local
use of reclaimed or recycled
materials,” said Luttle.
“For instance, much of
Christchurch’s plastic recycling
is either shipped to Asia or
landfilled, meaning we pay to
import it, then pay to get rid of
it. We also have a large supply
of recycled hardwood available.
If we think creatively, we can
reduce our emissions, keep
money in the local economy and
create an attractive and inspiring
suite.”
Little said the city council
is keen for potential suppliers
to explore other creative, lowcarbon
alternatives to traditional
furniture, which could scale up
into other end uses and products.
This could include using
waterjets to machine reclaimed
timber, or even 3D printing
or injection moulding of
recycled plastics.
“The tender will be published
on the Government Electronic
Tendering Service website in
mid-to-late August, and we want
to find out if there are companies
out there who either have the
capacity – or are keen to explore
– different, sustainable ways of
doing things,” Little said.
Organisations who do not use
GETS but would be interested
in submitting a tender proposal
should make sure they register
on www.gets.co.nz as soon as
possible. For more information
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
Sportier, spacious Honda Civic a standout
A SMALL hatchback hit here for
decades, the Honda Civic isn’t
feeling the same amount love
from buyers these days, with
many seduced by SUVs.
With sales in excess of 27 million
since its global launch 50
years ago, the Civic really put on
Honda on the map. Simple and
clean lines distinguish this latest
version from its predecessor. It
is also now a sportier drive and
offers greater space, especially
in the rear seat area, along with
easier access to the cargo compartment.
Civic models start with the
price leading $47,000 Sport being
reviewed here, or the $52,000
special edition Mugen. This
makes clever use of a variety of
high quality Mugen body kit
components to create a striking
looking vehicle.
A revamped version of the
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
zippy 1.5 turbo engine is ready
to rumble with more power and
torque. It now produces 131kW,
5kw more than its predecessor
and 240Nm of torque a 20nm
gain. In isolation, not massive
bumps in power and torque.
However, collectively they take
performance up a good notch or
two, with the torque getting to
work from just 1700rpm.
In real world driving the
motor is all smoothness and
tractability. Acceleration is brisk
and satisfying and gone is the
coarse edge the previous engine
had when working in the higher
rev range.
A much-improved take on the
Civic’s familiar Constant Variable
Transmission (CVT) now
features Normal and Eco driving
modes and a user-selectable
Sport mode. It feels more responsive
and in tune with the engine,
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
with enough electronic smarts
on board to get the most out of it.
Generously proportioned cabin
and cargo space is among the
best in the small car class, with
a more accessible luggage area
that’s 40mm wider. The standard
60/40 split rear seat back can be
quickly folded down for more
load space, with the side-pull
cargo cover making it super easy
to open or conceal whatever you
have in the rear cargo area.
Attention to detail is evident
everywhere in the cabin, including
an instrument panel design
with minimal cut lines to reduce
windshield reflections. The
generous use of quality materials
throughout is a notable feature.
It is the most technologically
advanced Civic hatch yet, featuring
a new 7-inch color LCD
driver’s display.
In addition to large, easy-torecognise
icons and a simplified
navigation structure with fewer
embedded menus, the touchscreen
features a proper volume
knob and hard buttons for Home
and Back functions.
There’s a new single-camera
system providing a longer, wider
field of view than its predecessors
radar-and-camera based
system. Honda Sensing also adds
Traffic Jam Assist, and the new
camera- based system improves
on existing functionality, such as
more natural brake application
and quicker reactions when using
Adaptive Cruise Control.
The suspension and steering
were developed in Europe and
feel like it from behind the wheel.
It reaffirms my view, that the
Civic Sport is the best all-round
riding and handling model in
the current Honda range. The
suspension reacts quickly and
decisively to steady the car from
sudden and unsettling changes
in the road surface.
With a wide and low-slung
stance, this newest Civic feels
reassuringly well planted on the
road. However, this makes it a
bit of a liability when driving on
gravel roads. Overall, the test
car felt confident and composed
with the suspensions nimbleness
a real stand out.
HEAR AGAIN are proud to bring a world first to New Zealand.
A leading Danish hearing aid manufacturer has recently
launched a range of hearing aids that provide the most natural
listening experience ever. Even a great hearing aid has always
sounded like a hearing aid until now.
The revolutionary new devices change the game to deliver the
most pure, natural sound ever. Typically, sound processed in
a hearing aid reaches your eardrum later than sound heard
directly; when these two ‘out of sync’ signals mix, you get an
artificial sound. This has been a problem for many years!
