Conquering
the Pipeline
of Pain
TOUGH: Amy Whitehead crossed the Pipeline of Pain on the Port Hills for the eighth time on Saturday to raise money for Dementia Canterbury.
• By Briar Allen
AMY WHITEHEAD is on an
adventure for dementia, running
the Pipeline of Pain on the
Port Hills to raise awareness
and money for people with the
illness.
Whitehead, 34, ran the 5.2km
loop route, which starts next to
the Bridle Path, for the eighth
time on Saturday to raise funds
for Dementia Canterbury.
She plans to complete the route
at least 78 times by December.
That’s a total of 405.6km over the
whole year.
Whitehead said she is doing
the challenge in memory of her
aunt Joanie Sommerville who
lost her battle with dementia in
January last year.
Said Whitehead: “She was a
super warm, bubbly, and incredibly
lovely person and it was
pretty hard to watch her personality
change.”
Whitehead has raised about
$3500 to date, which will go towards
helping dementia patients
and their families.
and activities that keep them
engaged.”
Jeffreys Reserve tree planting
plan gets the green light
• By Briar Allen
A TREE planting plan at Jeffreys
Reserve in Fendalton has been
approved in alignment with the
city council’s urban forest plan.
The Waimāero Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood Community
Board reviewed the plan
and it passed unanimously.
It will allow for 40 per cent
canopy cover across the reserve.
The urban forest plan
focuses on increasing the
city’s canopy cover, in
particular within open
spaces. It was released for
public consultation between
June 30 and July 17.
Four submissions specifically
related to Jeffreys
Reserve. Two expressed an
interest in seeing more native
trees, one highlighted
the importance of maintaining
visibility for safety reasons, and
one had concerns about shading
and existing silver birch trees.
These suggestions have been
incorporated.
City arborist Toby Chapman
said the Jeffreys Reserve plans
were sent around city council
departments internally, and one
concern was to ensure there
was sufficient space for the playground
upgrade.
Toby
Chapman
“One thing that was raised
there was to ensure that we have
space provided for an upgrade
of the playground, when it’s
scheduled in the future, which
we’ve done.
“We also took some trees off
the planting plan in one of the
corners just to create a more
open feel to the park because we
were concerned that that would
close the park off a lot.”
He said three proposed
trees near the playground
area and two near the
bend in the path have
been removed from the
plan.
Chapman said most of
the general submissions
were concerned about
the species selection, or
indicated a preference for
more native trees.
“This is something the city
council staff have taken on
board and will be incorporated
into these plans,” he said.
Some general submissions also
highlighted concerns about ongoing
maintenance of the trees,
but as part of the parks planting
programme all trees will be
maintained for the first seven
years before being included in
the city council’s normal tree
FUTURE PROOFING:
Changes have been
incorporated into the
Jeffreys Reserve tree
planting plan, to ensure
there is space for a
playground upgrade in the
future.
maintenance programme.
Chapman said there is only
a month and a half left of the
planting season, so not everything
will get done at Jeffreys
Reserve this season.
“We need to start ordering
trees for next season so we can
get stuck in.”
In Brief
NOR’WEST CYCLEWAY
NEGOTIATIONS ONGOING
Negotiations
between
city council
staff and a
preferred
contractor for the Nor’West Arc
Cycleway from the university to
Aorangi Rd are continuing. If
the negotiations are successful,
construction is anticipated to
begin later this month. Staff will
provide a further update once the
contract has been awarded and
the programme confirmed.
GARDENS TO GET LIGHT
TO HELP WITH SECURITY
The Bryndwr Community
Gardens will be getting a solar
light as a trial to help with
security. The light will go in the
gardens and will benefit attendees
of the aikido gym as well, as they
will be able to see the path to the
building at night. The garden may
also get a couple of fruit trees
planted in the coming months.
BIKE SHED SURVEY TO BE
CARRIED OUT
The Bishopdale Mall Business
Centre Association, with support
from community development
advisor Natalie Dally, will be
surveying businesses in the mall
about whether they need a secure
space to lock employee bicycles.
It is hoped the survey will help to
identify how many people would
use a bike shed, the size needed
and possible locations.
FUN TIMES:
The Kereru
V team take
a leap at
Christchurch
Netball
Centre’s
Rainbow
tournament
on Sunday.
Netballers jump for joy
A RECORD number of teams
descended on Hagley Park over
the weekend for Christchurch
Netball Centre’s annual junior
Rainbow tournament.
Seventy-four teams of primary
school-aged children across
Canterbury participated in the
popular event, designed to be
a fun, supportive environment
where children gain skills,
confidence and a love for the
game. This year’s tournament
broke the record for the number
of teams entered.
Said CNC general manager
Tom Houghton: “Our
responsibility is to grow a love
for the game of netball across
Ōtautahi and beyond.”
Numerous coaches, umpires,
whistlers and officials help make
the event possible. It has become
known for its spectacular fancy
dress and great community
atmosphere.
BON APPETIT: Teams from across Canterbury competed
in a series of games while dressed up.
Run to raise
money for
dementia
•From page 1
Whitehead said her
uncle decided to raise funds
for dementia by cycling the
length of New Zealand and she
wanted to do something similar
to help.
“I got the idea to do this
challenge from a podcast I was
listening to in 2021 where a
woman in Auckland picked a 5km
loop track and added an extra
5km each month.
“I thought it was really cool,
although I haven’t really thought
through what it entails.”
Whitehead said her fundraising
journey parallels what dementia
patients go through.
“When I started this in January
it was relatively easy but has
become progressively harder and I
have had to have people help me.
“This is what it is like for
dementia patients, there are small
and subtle changes and as they
go further on their journey it
becomes harder and the patient
and the family needs more
support.”
CHAMPS: Burnside High School culinary team Maddie
Trafford (left) and Kaitlyn Braithwaite celebrate their
regional win.
• By Briar Allen
TWO BURNSIDE High School
students won the regional round
of the National Secondary
Schools Culinary Challenge.
Year 13 students Maddie
Trafford and Kaitlyn Braithwaite
will represent Canterbury and
compete against seven other
New Zealand secondary schools
for the national title.
The final will be held in
Auckland at the Manukau
Institute of Technology on
August 23. The winning school
will receive a Moffat E23M3 oven
valued at $3500, $1000 Bidfood
credit and the winning students
will each receive a $500 Prezzy
Card.
For the regional competition
the two students had to create
and submit photos and recipes of
an entree where the main hero
of the dish was cauliflower and
they made Dukkah crumbed
cauliflower on a cauliflower
puree with roasted carrots,
pickled radish, roquette salsa
verde, with a cauliflower cracker
and maple syrup.
Along with winning the
regional title they won $500
in credit from Bidfood to
assist with the purchase of
ingredients for training, a $300
restaurant association voucher
as part of their research towards
developing their dishes for the
final, and chef jackets to wear at
the final.
Food technology and
hospitality teacher Kristie
Hanley said they are quietly
confident but still need more
practice before the big day.
“It is coming to the big
crunch point before any
competition. We have been
fortunate to win this title on two
previous occasions,” she said.
Hanley said students who take
cookery as a subject at school
learn so many foundational skills
that they can be useful for many
career options.
“Any student wishing to focus
on the hospitality industry
gains knowledge of what it feels
like in a commercial kitchen and
also front of house.”
The national competition will
see each team prepare, cook
and serve four portions of their
cauliflower entree and four
portions of a main course that
uses Waitoa chicken, at least
three servings of New Zealand
grown fresh vegetables, a starch
component, and a sauce.
On the day following the
competition, all of the students
competing will take part in the
New Zealand Culinary Journey,
visiting a variety of suppliers and
hospitality venues.
Hanley said they are fortunate
at the school to be well-resourced
with their teaching facilities
and the depth of knowledge and
experience of their staff.
“A number of students
choose our subjects as they
enjoy the hands-on practical
experience. Other students
choose a pathway in food
technology, designing and
creating new products. For those
sports-minded we also cater to
the nutrition and health aspects.
Cooking is a life skill.”
Papanui High students earn medals
• By Briar Allen
STUDENTS FROM Papanui
High School managed to win
bronze and silver in the National
Secondary Schools Culinary
Challenge.
Eight teams of year 13 students
competed in the online cooking
competition and all teams
managed to place with four silver
and four bronze.
Each entry is judged by
starting at 100 and marks are
taken away for any errors, with
the school’s top mark being 87
out of 100.
Assistant head of catering
Judy Coleman said they have
entered the competition the past
two years and the competition
allows students the chance to
work in a commercial kitchen
environment.
“This is a great competition,
and we will compete again next
CREATIONS: One of the Papanui High School students’ entrees consisted of roasted
sticky sesame cauliflower served with traditional boiled sticky rice and gow gees.
Right – Another included deep fried cauliflower with a lemon aioli dip.
year. Students gain 10 level
three credits from competing,
but I always give the students
the option to compete, it is not
compulsory,” she said.
The competition required
students to make entrees
that used cauliflower as the
main ingredient and Coleman
said it gave the students a chance
to develop their skills and
recipes.
“There was a lot of trial and
error, and the students are very
critical of each other but in a
nice way. It gives them the scope
to develop recipes, learn the
equipment, research, it is good
from the point of view.”
She said it is a great
opportunity for students
to gain these skills whether
they use them later in life, while
doing part time work or if they
decide to enter the hospitality
industry.
“It is a wonderful opportunity,
and it is really rewarding to
see them try something new
and learn new skills, it is really
good.”
‘Are we there yet?’ was a constant
question whenever we travelled as
a young family. It started from the
minute we left home and continued
until the moment we pulled up at
our destination. Today it provides
a perfect analogy for where we find
ourselves in the current market.
There are several schools of thought as
to what’s actually happening.
Here’s one of the most optimistic: ‘we’re
almost there, ready to turn the corner’.
In support of this, utilizing coalface
observations, I’m finding auction
rooms including our own are busy,
full of qualified, cash-ready buyers in
the following categories: first-home
purchasers and ‘as is, where is’ buyers
looking for their next project.
Not to be put off, and reappearing after a
long absence, are investors determined
to start their own property portfolios –
often in anticipation of an opportunity
to purchase well.
Now let’s look a little more closely at
some of these categories.
The first-home buyers are definitely
benefitting from some easing of the
lending criteria and reduced LVR levels
whilst being predominantly active in
the $500,000 – $750,000 bracket.
Real Estate New Zealand figures just
released support this finding with
Christchurch sale-by-price data for the
month of June showing 47% of all sales
were between $500,000 and $700,000.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen
nearly half of all the sales occurring
being to mainly first-home buyers and,
as a mum in addition to being a real
estate professional, it gives me hope for
the future.
No doubt the view that interest rates
could have peaked and that potential
worst-case scenarios can be quantified
has also helped alleviate fears held by
previous groups of first-home buyers.
Now investors: what’s bringing them
out? Is it just the oversupply of specific
types of property, especially of the twobedroom,
no-garage variety, that could
be just the start they were looking for
– or is it the positivity that accompanies
the resurgence of immigration figures?
We now know there are as many as
200,000 immigrants in the process of
working towards residency.
The prospect of them going on to either
rent or purchase their own property
adds fuel to the belief that the market,
though cautious, is modestly improving.
So, let’s get back to ‘are we there yet?’
The optimist in me says, ‘getting there’.
I know that sounds a bit like a foot in
both camps and, yes, it is.
Indicators are definitely present to
support that belief and prices are
holding their own whilst the level
of desirable available properties is
seasonally low. It also hasn’t escaped
me that we have an election pending,
which could act as a wildcard. And I’m
aware of statements made by one of
the parties looking to make significant
changes to the Brightline Test by
means of a reduction of the timeframe
in which taxes are required to be paid
on sale. This has the potential to create
more market activity. So it’s bound to
get interesting as everyone lobbies,
utilizing the property market as a means
of winning support.
But one thing 30 years of real estate has
taught me is that when property goes
into a trough it always comes out the
other side, and to everyone currently
trying to transact property, this very old
but perennially relevant saying holds
some weight.
“Real estate cannot be lost or stolen, nor
can it be carried away. Purchased with
common sense, paid for and managed
with reasonable care it is the safest
investment in the world.” - Franklin D.
Bid to stop ‘harmful cat feeder’
• By Anastasia Hedge
RESIDENTS IN Papanui,
Bryndwr and Bishopdale are
calling for intervention from
police, SPCA and their local
MP to stop a woman they say is
harming their pets.
The group of cat owners have
tracked the woman they have
called the “local harmful cat
feeder”.
Seven-year-old cat Tabs is
now on steroids after a case
of vomiting left him severely
underweight in December.
He was ordered onto a strict
diet, but owner Sara said it
was proving tough when a cat
feeder had been dishing out
questionable cat food in her
neighbourhood for years.
“I know she’s fed my cat
potato chips because he was
vomiting daily. We had to put
him in the bathroom at night
because it’s easier to clean up.
Just last week, he vomited up
crinkle cuts and we don’t have
crinkle cut chips in the house.”
Videos and photos show a
woman carrying bags of food
and putting it on leaves or junk
mail outside and inside people’s
properties. She has also been
seen grooming cats with a brush
and in one video appearing to
take a cat from underneath a
fence.
Sara said she had asked the
woman to stop feeding her cat,
but she continued to put food
out every day.
FOUL FOOD: Seven-year-old cat Tabs is on steroids after a case of vomiting left him
severely underweight in December. He may have been eating the food scattered
outside and inside people’s properties.
“I usually see her on my street
between 10am and 11am so I put
him out after 2pm and someone
else’s poor cat has eaten up the
food.”
Another resident, Sharmaine,
said her cat, Lucky, ate food the
woman had laid out and on the
same day became very unwell
and had to be put down.
She said she could not prove
the woman’s food caused him to
get sick, but she was not taking
any chances with her other cat
Phoebe.
“She’ll stand outside and
click her fingers, like ‘come on’,
trying to encourage my other
cat outside and I look at her
like ‘don’t even think about it’. I
can’t even say anything, without
being so, not hateful, just very
angry and frustrated.”
Kate, like Sara and Sharmaine,
said she had asked the woman
repeatedly to stop feeding her
cat Archie, who she noticed
had put on significant weight,
despite being fed just once a day.
She said she had laid a
complaint with police after she
confronted the woman, who was
on her property on Saturday.
“I told her to leave and I said
I’m going to keep standing here
until you leave, until you stop
feeding my cat and she came
right up to me and I said ‘don’t
get physical with me love, if you
do that you’re going to jail’.”
Dozens of cat owners have
shared their run-ins with the
woman and stories of their
sick cats on the Facebook page
named Stop the Local Harmful
Cat Feeder.
A petition has gathered more
than 430 signatures calling
for police, SPCA and Ilam MP
Sarah Pallett to act.
Police confirmed they
are assessing reports of
the woman’s behaviour
for criminality. A police
spokesperson said any concerns
about behaviour in the area
should be reported.
SPCA scientific officer Alison
Vaughan was aware of the
situation and the SPCA has been
working with other agencies on
the case.
Bishopdale Medical Centre
had put up a sign addressed
to the cat feeder, asking
them to stop feeding cats on
their property because it was
attracting flies and they were
sick of cleaning it up.
City council staff had
followed up on complaints from
residents, and the woman was
spoken to but her actions were
not deemed an offense under the
Litter Act. –RNZ
Nissan X-Trail a luxurious ground-breaker
NISSAN’S 4 TH generation X-Trail
is a ground-breaker. It’s the first
sold here with hybrid technology
and the first SUV produced
under the joint Nissan, Renault
and Mitsubishi Automotive
Alliance.
This latest X-Trail is touted as
Nissan’s most technologically
advanced SUV and is unique in
the world of hybrids, offering an
EV-like drive experience without
ever needing a plug or fast charger.
Unlike conventional hybrids,
Nissan’s e-POWER technology
delivers a constant EV-like drive,
thanks to the driven wheels being
powered only by the electric
motors.
Both the exterior and interior
of the new X-Trail are smart,
modern and versatile.
The flagship $66,990 model
Ti-L e-POWER with e-4ORCE,
supplied for this road test, is the
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
real luxury SUV deal – and it
needs to be with that hefty price
tag.
It includes a panoramic sunroof,
tri-zone climate controlled
air conditioning, heated steering
wheel, 10-speaker sound system,
and hands-free opening of the
rear tailgate.
Its high-output 2.1kWh battery
is teamed with a turbo-petrol
engine, power generator, inverter
and twin electric motors, with
a combined system output of
157kW. Charging the electric
motors is the sole mission of a
1.5-litre turbo-charged threecylinder
petrol engine, and the
wheels are exclusively driven by
the electric motor. Pure electric
motor drive means there is none
of the power lag of an internal
combustion engine or traditional
hybrid.
Thanks to the addition of a
rear motor, the powerful dual
e-motor system offers nippy acceleration,
with a zero-100km/h
time of just 7.0 seconds. The
e-4ORCE twin-motor all-wheeldrive
system delivers reassuring
traction in damp, muddy and
icy conditions. It’s smoother and
livelier to drive that most hybrids
– and about as close as you will
get to full EV driving in a vehicle
that isn’t EV, but does a great job
of impersonating one.
A new-generation CVT (Constant
Variable Transmission)
delivers better fuel economy
thanks to improved ratio coverage.
Several upgrades ensure a
big step up from the lethargic
and indifferent CVT used in the
previous model.
For a mid-sized SUV this one
is roomier than most with and
load space to burn, with a generous
sized boot.
Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility
suite of active safety tech has
greater capability. Standard
functions include Predictive
Forward Collision Warning,
Intelligent Cruise Control with
Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane
Departure Warning and Rear
Auto Emergency Braking with
pedestrian and cyclist detection
technology. An Acoustic Vehicle
Alerting System on e-POWER
models lets other road users
know an electrified vehicle is
approaching, when the X-Trail
is operating in near-silent EV
Mode.
The advanced multi-link rear
suspension excels when under
siege from sudden direction
changes, or different road cambers.
The suspension and steering
establishes greater interactions
between driver, vehicle and
road, which make this vehicle a
more enjoyable drive than any
other X-Trail.
This isn’t a serious off-road
vehicle. If you wanting that then
you’ll need to look elsewhere.
However, it’s perfect for
powering its way up ski field
access roads or reasonably well
formed gravel tracks, but its
average ground clearance make
excursion over more demanding
terrain risky.
