Conquering the
Pipeline
of Pain
TOUGH: Amy Whitehead crossed the Pipeline of Pain on the Port Hills for the eighth time on Saturday to raise money for Dementia Canterbury.
• By Briar Allen
AMY WHITEHEAD is on an
adventure for dementia, running
the Pipeline of Pain on the
Port Hills to raise awareness
and money for people with the
illness.
Whitehead, 34, ran the 5.2km
loop route, which starts next to
the Bridle Path, for the eighth
time on Saturday to raise funds
for Dementia Canterbury.
She plans to complete the route
at least 78 times by December.
That’s a total of 405.6km over the
whole year.
Whitehead said she is doing
the challenge in memory of her
aunt Joanie Sommerville who
lost her battle with dementia in
January last year.
Said Whitehead: “She was a
super warm, bubbly, and incredibly
lovely person and it was
pretty hard to watch her personality
change.”
Whitehead has raised about
$3500 to date, which will go towards
helping dementia patients
and their families.
to help my aunt and uncle, but
they provide care, information
and activities that keep them
engaged.”
New Brighton water
fill station to close
THE UNCHLORINATED water
fill stations at the Keyes in New
Brighton and in Burnside will be
permanently closed to comply
with drinking water laws.
On May 9, Government water
regulator Taumata Arowai
advised it intended to decline
the city council’s first chlorine
exemption applications.
Chlorine has since been introduced
to all water supply zones
in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula.
This is a necessary step to
comply with the Water Services
Act and the associated rules and
standards for community water
supplies.
Taumata Arowai has now
confirmed that the requirement
to chlorinate extends to the city
council’s unchlorinated water fill
stations.
Head of Three Waters Brent
Smith said the city council has
a responsibility to comply with
Government legislation.
“We know this will be disappointing
for some people, but we
have no choice in the matter – we
must comply with the law – so
the stations will be permanently
closed in the coming days.
“Making sure Christchurch
and Banks Peninsula residents
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
have access to safe and reliable
drinking water is our number
one priority.
“Chlorine has been used safely
all around the world for about
120 years. It keeps millions of
people all over the globe – including
in most of New Zealand
– safe from waterborne illness.
“If you are concerned about the
taste of chlorine, you can keep
drinking water in an open jug
in the fridge. The chlorine taste
will dissipate naturally over a few
hours,” Smith said.
Chlorine and any associated
by-products can be removed by
using a granulated, activated
carbon (GAC) filter. These are
available from hardware supply
stores and water filter companies.
The city council recently provided
feedback on the Taumata
Arowai draft exemption decisions.
“In late June we sent Taumata
Arowai feedback on the draft exemption
decisions. They will now
consider our feedback before
issuing a final decision.
“We not expecting the final
decision to change due to the
nature of feedback received in
the drafts,” Smith said.
Touch of nature
welcomed
TOM Worthington understands
the value of trees.
Sure, there are four less
parking spots near his two
cafes – Tom’s and Estelle – on
Southwark St, but he says the
amenity provided by the trees is
worth so much.
“It’s just so great to have nice,
established planting in the central
city,” Tom said.
“These trees and other plants
are really lovely and I think
quite different. They kind of feel
like they might be in someone’s
garden rather than on the street
which is fun.”
Six new trees – five acer bowhall
and one magnolia – have
been planted along Southwark
St. This is part of a broader
project to improve amenity in
the central city as more and
more residents and businesses
move in.
Tom opened his first café on
Southwark St – aptly named
Tom’s – in March 2022, before
opening Estelle earlier this year.
He’s eagerly anticipating the
trees’ new foliage in summer as
the acer bowhall outside Tom’s
has dropped its leaves for winter.
“Tom’s is looking like it’s had a
nice wee makeover for spring.”
City council head of city
growth and property Bruce Rendall
said Southwark St is home
to a wide range of businesses
and new residential developments
so was the perfect place to
pilot additional planting.
The project was delivered
through the city council’s Enliven
Places Programme funding,
which undertakes smaller
scale amenity and activation
improvements.
It also supports the council’s
proposed Urban Forest Plan,
which aims to grow the city’s
urban forest, with no ward
having less than 15 per cent total
canopy cover.
Shirley Boys’ High students
hold mock general election
SHIRLEY BOYS’ High students
were introduced to New
Zealand’s MMP system by
completing a mock election in
their social studies classes, with
several MPs making a visit to the
school.
All 300 year 10 students have
just completed an election to
learn about the MMP system at
the end of a unit learning about
the history of democracy, and
the Parliament’s history.
A number of students also got
a surprise visit from the Labour’s
Christchurch East candidate
Reuben Davidson and current
MP Tāmati Coffey.
They were brought in by a
recent Shirley old boy, Alex
Hexison, who is now a local
Labour Party election organiser.
Coffey talked to the boys about
what it was like to be an MP and
answered a number of questions
from the class.
In the mock election, students
got to choose who they thought
would best represent their class
(electorate) in the Parliament but
also to vote for the party who
had the best idea to improve the
running of the school.
The ‘Earth’ party took 33
per cent of the vote, with their
main policy making lunchtime
20 minutes in length – from 50
minutes currently. But like a
WINNER: William Sandford was the winning candidate in
Shirley BHS’s mock election, standing for the Fire party,
which received 38 per cent of the vote.
usual MMP election, the Earth
party would have needed to form
a coalition with the Fire Party to
form the Shirley Government.
The Fire party’s key policy was to
start school at 9am – 30 minutes
later than the current start time.
Closer to October 14, the
students will also participate
in the New Zealand Electoral
Commission’s Kids Voting – Te
Pōti a Ngā Tamariki election,
which closely mirrors New
Zealand’s general election.
Here students can choose their
electoral roll (Māori or General)
and electorate (most will be
Christchurch East) and then get
a ballot paper which is similar to
the ones their parents will get.
SHIRLEY BOYS’ High has
Akaroa Recreational Ground, Akaroa
The Akaroa French Festival is a biennial event
celebrating the unique culture and heritage
of New Zealand’s only French settlement in the
harbourside town of Akaroa.
The next Akaroa French Festival will be held
from the 6th to the 8th October, 2023.
The festival commences on the Friday evening
with the official opening. This is followed by
Le Marché de Nuit– the Night Market, where
fabulous food and wine vendors, live music
and dancing entertain party-goers.
Saturday morning begins with ‘Landings’,
reenacting the tales of the many brave souls
who came to call Akaroa home: from the first
Maori to the whalers and then of course, to
the French and German settlers on board the
Comte de Paris. Next, our famous Parade with
brass band will lead the crowd to the Akaroa
Recreational Grounds for the commencement
of Market Day.
The festival hub will be in the Akaroa
Recreational Ground, where guests can enjoy
some live music, taste local food and wine
as well as lots of French cuisine, or take in
the local fashion show and a French cooking
demonstration. For the more energetic, Frenchthemed
competitions will be held including:
cock crowing, a waiter’s race and multiple
French games enjoyed by all the family.
Saturday evening is definitely party time!
Our show-stopping, Le Cabaret, will be found
in the Big Top marquee featuring comedy,
Le Can Can and risqué burlesque. Revellers
dance the night away to great music from
New Zealand’s very best entertainers.
Sunday is a real taste of France with La
Brocante, an opportunity to search for
treasure or strike a bargain with local vendors
and professionals selling antiques, collectibles
and vintage wares. We also have Le Cirque
Du Croissant happening in the big tent which
is a fun show for kids of all ages.
Akaroa French Festival shines a light on all that
Banks Peninsula has to offer.
College students get Dragons
Den victory for decal business
A GROUP of high school
students have proven their
entrepreneurship with their
decal business
Te Aratai College students
Tom Rhodes, Blake Williams,
Mark Lemon, Kade Shrives
and Connor Armstrong are
competing in Young Enterprise
Dragons’ Den Pitch. They scored
96 points with their business
Decalify Designs putting them
1st in Canterbury for the competition.
During the pitch the students
had 5 minutes to present their
business idea to a panel of judges
from the business community.
“We had to cover aspects
including the mission and goals,
marketing and finance as well
as explaining how the business
is innovative and sustainable,”
Armstrong said.
The boys business, draws on
their desire to make culture
more visible in Aotearoa and
specifically Otautahi. They have
set up a business that designs,
creates and install window
decals (manifestations) for their
customers.
“We consult with customers
about their aspirations, use
BUSINESS: A group of Te Aratai College students have
started their own decal business and have taken on multiple
challeges around their college.
computing software to make
their designs, use a vinyl cutter
to make their decals and then
professionally install the decals
on the required windows and
surfaces,” Armstrong said.
Decalify have already completed
two bodies of work. They
have designed and installed
room numbers and signs at
their school, as well completing
designing and installing a series
of decals at the Bishopdale Early
Learning Centre.
The boys are currently working
on a large body of work to
design, manufacture and install
all the decals required for the
new YMCA in the central city
before the grand opening in the
coming months.
What impressed the judges
about the boys pitch was their
clear understanding of the
finances of their business, their
clear understanding of their
market and their presentation
skills.
Run to raise
money for
dementia
•From page 1
Whitehead said her
uncle decided to raise funds
for dementia by cycling the
length of New Zealand and she
wanted to do something similar
to help.
“I got the idea to do this
challenge from a podcast I was
listening to in 2021 where a
woman in Auckland picked a 5km
loop track and added an extra
5km each month.
“I thought it was really cool,
although I haven’t really thought
through what it entails.”
Whitehead said her fundraising
journey parallels what dementia
patients go through.
“When I started this in January
it was relatively easy but has
become progressively harder and I
have had to have people help me.
“This is what it is like for
dementia patients, there are small
and subtle changes and as they
go further on their journey it
becomes harder and the patient
and the family needs more
support.”
of high performance, and reveals the art of exceeding your highest expectations.
Lioness- The bold new novel from the Women’s Prize
Longlisted author Emily Perkins
You know how we say we devoured a story, and also that we were consumed by it?
Eating and being eaten. It was like that with Claire, for me. From humble beginnings,
Therese has let herself grow used to a life of luxury after marrying into an empirebuilding
family. But when rumours of corruption gather around her husband’s latest
development, the social opprobrium is shocking, the fallout swift, and Therese
begins to look at her privileged and insular world with new eyes. In the flat below
Therese, something else is brewing. Her neighbour Claire believes she’s discovered
the secret to living with freedom and authenticity, freeing herself from the mundanity
of domesticity. Therese finds herself enchanted by the lure of the permissive zone
Claire creates in her apartment - a place of ecstatic release. All too quickly, Therese
is forced to confront herself and her choices - just how did she become this person?
And what exactly should she do about it?
Len Lye Grass
sculpture plan
under review
• By Tony Simons
AN AMBITIOUS plan to build and install
a sculpture conceived by internationally
renowned New Zealand artist Len Lye
at Scott Park in Ferrymead is now being
reviewed.
The artwork named Grass, which was to
be placed east of the Ferrymead Bridge, is
now considered too big and not what was
originally planned.
It will represent long beach grass
swaying in the wind – and be the length of
two large cars.
It was first conceived by the
experimental filmmaker and sculptor
more than 60 years ago, but he died in
New York in 1980 before his vision for the
work could be realised.
A city council concept plan for the area
from 2018 shows a site for a small artwork
at the eastern end of the bridge. But the
Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group,
supported by the Len Lye Foundation, now
wants the 3.5m high kinetic artwork to
go where a public toilet block is currently
located at Scott Park.
The pathway group is standing firm
on the idea, but Waihoro Spreydon-
Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board
chair Callum Ward said this is not what
was originally proposed so the board has
asked city council staff to look at other
options.
Grass is being constructed by four
mechanical engineering students in their
final year at Canterbury University using
materials that were not available to the
artist in the 1960s.
The site next to the Mt Pleasant Yacht
ART: A
version of
Len Lye’s
Grass
sculpture.
Left – A
preliminary
drawing
of the
proposed
sculpture
for Scott
Park.
Club was preferred in part because Lye
was born in Christchurch and lived in the
Mt Pleasant area for a time.
Wind and kite surfers have objected
because the park is a preparation and
launching area for water sports enthusiasts
who are worried about the space it will
take up.
Pacific Fleet Windsurfing spokesperson
Miranda Hill questioned the impact on
car parking and access to the area for
trailers, boards and equipment.
The yacht club also decided last week it
wanted more consultation with park users
before it would support the plan.
Said Mt Pleasant Yacht Club
Commodore Brad Henderson: “We rig
our boats on part of that park and (the)
sculpture will restrict the area we can use.
“We like the concept but just want to
make sure the interests of all park users
are taken into account,” he said.
The coastal pathway group, which is
co-sponsoring the work, has suggested
the concept plan for the park might be
reviewed.
Group chair Hanno Sander said he
wanted the sculpture in Scott Park and
believes it can be placed there without
impacting existing activities.
“But a lot of people use that park and
we want to make sure all the interested
groups are on board and we are not
treading on anyone’s toes.
“Nothing has been
formalised, even the design has not been
finalised, and even if it is finished by the
end of the year as planned, that doesn’t
mean it has to be installed immediately,”
he said.
Warming ways to tighten your belt
Winter comes with an
extra challenge. The
folks from Love Food
Hate Waste have
some tips to get
through
Cook in bulk
If you know you are going to
eat foods such as pasta or potatoes
more than one night a week,
cook two nights worth in one go
and store in labelled containers
in the fridge or freezer.
Cook once, eat twice
Use leftovers as the starting
point for the next meal. Leftover
roast chicken makes delicious
chicken noodle soup.
Make the most of your mince
Make your mince go further
by bulking it up with other
ingredients. You can add in
carrots or pumpkin, celery, leek
or mushrooms, or a tin of beans
or lentils. This is a great way to
use up vegetables that have gone
limp as well. If you are making
meatballs or burger patties,
adding breadcrumbs makes the
meat go further and will help
them keep their shape. It’s also
a great way to use up stale
bread.
Try different proteins
Meat can be really expensive
so try using different types of
protein throughout the week,
such as beans, lentils or tofu, to
help keep costs down.
Serve soup
Soups are a wonderful way to
make a small amount of food
go a long way. Not only are they
cheap, they also help to warm
you from the inside. You can add
all sorts of leftover meat, vegetables
and grains to them.
Tips on choosing vegies
Check what vegetables are
cheaper or on special – often
these are the in-season vegetables
– and incorporate them into
your meals. Or choose to also get
some frozen vegies as they are
cheap, nutritious, pre-prepared
and won’t go bad. Eat all parts of
the vegetable – broccoli stalks,
silverbeet stems and the green
part of the leek are all edible
and can help bulk out a meal
and add an additional serving of
vegetables.
Sort your storage
Bread should be kept in the
fridge or freezer so it doesn’t
grow mould. Most of your apples
and other fruit should be kept
in the fridge too. Potatoes and
onions shouldn’t be stored next
to each other as they will both go
off faster.
Can I revive this limp vegie?
Lastly, if your carrot, celery
or leafy greens are looking limp
and you’re wanting them to get
crisp again you can cut the vegie,
soak in cold water and put it in
the fridge, and in 10-15 minutes
you’ll start to see it getting firmer
and crisp again.
Chicken noodle soup
Ingredients
Chicken bones/carcass (from
roast chicken) or you can use
3-4 fresh chicken frames
1 tsp salt
Pepper, to taste
2 cloves garlic, chopped or 1 tsp
crushed garlic
1 bay leaf (optional)
8 cups water (2 litres)
2 carrots, chopped or grated
1 leek, thinly sliced including
the green top
2 sticks celery, thinly sliced
2 cups cooked chicken,
shredded
250g your choice of dried
noodles e.g., egg noodles, rice
noodles, or spaghetti
2 chicken stock cubes
2 tsp mixed herbs
Directions
Make the chicken broth for
the soup by placing the chicken
carcass, salt, pepper, garlic, bay
leaf (if using) and water into a
large pot. Bring to the boil and
then reduce the heat and allow it
to simmer for at least 60 minutes.
Once the broth is ready, sieve
the broth, making sure to catch
the liquid in a bowl. Discard the
chicken bones.
Return the chicken broth to
the pot and add the carrots, leek,
celery, and chicken. Bring to a
gentle boil.
Stir in dried noodles, chicken
stock cubes and mixed herbs.
Simmer the soup for 10-15
WINTER
WARMER:
Chicken
noodle soup
is a great way
to make one
meal last two,
by using a
roast chicken
carcass.
PHOTO: ODT
minutes, until the noodles are
cooked. If you find the soup is
too thick, you can add more
water.
Season the soup with salt and
pepper before serving.
Cooking tips:
Switch up the vegetables in this
recipe and use what you already
have or what your household
likes. If you are short on time
or don’t have a chicken carcass,
you can make this recipe using
bought chicken stock.
