Conquering the 

Pipeline 

of Pain 

TOUGH: Amy Whitehead crossed the Pipeline of Pain on the Port Hills for the eighth time on Saturday to raise money for Dementia Canterbury.

AMY WHITEHEAD is on an 

adventure for dementia, running 

the Pipeline of Pain on the 

Port Hills to raise awareness 

and money for people with the 

illness. 

Whitehead, 34, ran the 5.2km 

loop route, which starts next to 

the Bridle Path, for the eighth 

time on Saturday to raise funds 

for Dementia Canterbury. 

She plans to complete the route 

at least 78 times by December. 

That’s a total of 405.6km over the 

whole year. 

Whitehead said she is doing 

the challenge in memory of her 

aunt Joanie Sommerville who 

lost her battle with dementia in 

January last year. 

Said Whitehead: “She was a 

super warm, bubbly, and incredibly 

lovely person and it was 

pretty hard to watch her personality 

change.” 

Whitehead has raised about 

$3500 to date, which will go towards 

helping dementia patients 

and their families.

Len Lye sculpture plan review

AN AMBITIOUS plan to build 

and install a sculpture conceived 

by internationally renowned 

New Zealand artist Len Lye at 

Scott Park in Ferrymead is now 

being reviewed. 

The artwork named Grass, 

which was to be placed east of 

the Ferrymead Bridge, is now 

considered too big and not what 

was originally planned. 

It will represent long beach 

grass swaying in the wind – and 

be the length of two large cars. 

It was first conceived by the 

experimental filmmaker and 

sculptor more than 60 years ago, 

but he died in New York in 1980 

before his vision for the work 

could be realised. 

A city council concept plan 

for the area from 2018 shows a 

site for a small artwork at the 

eastern end of the bridge. But the 

Christchurch Coastal Pathway 

Group, supported by the Len Lye 

Foundation, now wants the 3.5m 

high kinetic artwork to go where 

a public toilet block is currently 

located at Scott Park. 

The pathway group is standing 

firm on the idea, but Waihoro 

Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote 

Community Board chair Callum 

Ward said this is not what was 

originally proposed so the board 

has asked city council staff to 

look at other options.

Christchurch and lived in the Mt 

Pleasant area for a time. 

Wind and kite surfers have 

objected because the park is a 

preparation and launching area 

for water sports enthusiasts who 

are worried about the space it 

will take up. 

Pacific Fleet Windsurfing 

spokesperson Miranda Hill 

questioned the impact on car 

parking and access to the area for 

trailers, boards and equipment. 

The yacht club also decided 

last week it wanted more 

consultation with park users 

before it would support the plan. 

Said Mt Pleasant Yacht Club 

Commodore Brad Henderson: 

“We rig our boats on part of that 

park and (the) sculpture will 

restrict the area we can use. 

“We like the concept but just 

want to make sure the interests 

of all park users are taken into 

account,” he said. 

The coastal pathway group, 

which is co-sponsoring the work, 

has suggested the concept plan 

for the park might be reviewed. 

Group chair Hanno Sander 

said he wanted the sculpture in 

Scott Park and believes it can be 

placed there without impacting 

existing activities. 

“But a lot of people use that 

park and we want to make sure 

all the interested groups are on 

board and we are not treading on 

anyone’s toes. 

“Nothing has been 

formalised, even the design has 

not been finalised, and even if it 

is finished by the end of the year 

as planned, that doesn’t mean it 

has to be installed immediately,” 

he said. 

Te Kaha 

arena’s 

major 

concrete 

pours 

complete 

ANOTHER KEY phase of 

Te Kaha’s construction has 

wrapped up, with the last of the 

major concrete pours taking 

place on Monday last week. 

This means the substructure 

and foundation work for the 

$683-million multi-use arena 

is complete, and work is now 

focused solely on the steel and 

vertical construction. 

The foundations work began 

in January and since then 55 

major pours have taken place, 

with almost 26,000 cubic metres 

of concrete poured into Te 

Kaha’s substructure. 

More than 4800 tonnes of 

reinforcing has been used to 

ensure the arena is able to withstand 

any seismic movement in 

the future. 

A smaller series of concrete 

pours to finish the concrete slab 

on the northern side of the arena 

will be completed later in the 

project. 

The project remains on budget 

and on track to open in 2026.

A RECORD number of teams 

descended on Hagley Park over 

the weekend for Christchurch 

Netball Centre’s annual junior 

Rainbow tournament. 

Seventy-four teams of primary 

school-aged children across 

Canterbury participated in the 

popular event, designed to be 

a fun, supportive environment 

where children gain skills, 

confidence and a love for the 

game. This year’s tournament 

broke the record for the number 

of teams entered. 

Said CNC general manager 

Tom Houghton: “Our 

responsibility is to grow a love 

for the game of netball across 

Ōtautahi and beyond.” 

Numerous coaches, umpires, 

whistlers and officials help make 

the event possible. It has become 

known for its spectacular fancy 

dress and great community 

atmosphere.

“I got the idea to do this 

challenge from a podcast I was 

listening to in 2021 where a 

woman in Auckland picked a 5km 

loop track and added an extra 

5km each month. 

“I thought it was really cool, 

although I haven’t really thought 

through what it entails.” 

Whitehead said her fundraising 

journey parallels what dementia 

patients go through. 

“When I started this in January 

it was relatively easy but has 

become progressively harder and I 

have had to have people help me. 

“This is what it is like for 

dementia patients, there are small 

and subtle changes and as they 

go further on their journey it 

becomes harder and the patient 

and the family needs more 

support.”

naming policy 

A DRAFT naming policy 

designed to provide more 

guidance around the naming 

of roads, parks and facilities is 

open for feedback. 

The policy aims to 

incorporate the importance 

of mana whenua, the 

environment and cultural 

heritage when it comes to 

naming roads, parks and 

facilities across the city. 

City council head of strategic 

policy and resilience David 

Griffiths said the new policy 

will replace the Roads and 

Rights-of-way Naming Policy 

and the Naming of Reserves 

and Facilities Policy. 

“These old policies don’t 

reflect the significant changes 

that has taken place over the 

past 30 years or provide good 

guidance for the community or 

staff on naming,” Griffiths said. 

“Our community boards, 

who make most of the decisions 

on names for roads, green 

spaces and facilities, have asked 

for improved guidance on 

naming and greater diversity 

in the names presented to them 

for consideration.”

Students get Dragons Den 

victory for decal business 

A GROUP OF high school 

students have proven their 

entrepreneurship with their 

decal business. 

Te Aratai College students 

Tom Rhodes, Blake Williams, 

Mark Lemon, Kade Shrives and 

Connor Armstrong competed in 

the Young Enterprise Dragons’ 

Den Pitch. They scored 96 points 

with their business, Decalify Designs, 

which won the Canterbury 

section of the competition. 

During their pitch, the students 

had 5min to present their 

business idea to a panel of judges 

from the business community. 

“We had to cover aspects 

including the mission and goals, 

marketing and finance as well 

as explaining how the business 

is innovative and sustainable,” 

Armstrong said. 

The boys’ business draws on 

their desire to make culture 

more visible in Aotearoa and 

specifically Otautahi Christchurch. 

They design, create and 

install window decals, including 

images, graphics, and letters, for 

their customers. 

“We consult with customers

about their aspirations, use 

computing software to make

to make their decals and then

a series of decals at the Bishopdale 

Early Learning Centre. 

They are currently working on 

a large body of work to design, 

manufacture and install at the 

new YMCA in central Christchurch 

before its grand opening. 

The judges were impressed 

with the boys pitch, saying they 

had a clear understanding of the 

finances of their business and 

market. They also credited their 

presentation skills.
