Conquering the 

Pipeline 

of Pain 

TOUGH: Amy Whitehead crossed the Pipeline of Pain on the Port Hills for the eighth time on Saturday to raise money for Dementia Canterbury.

AMY WHITEHEAD is on an 

adventure for dementia, running 

the Pipeline of Pain on the 

Port Hills to raise awareness 

and money for people with the 

illness. 

Whitehead, 34, ran the 5.2km 

loop route, which starts next to 

the Bridle Path, for the eighth 

time on Saturday to raise funds 

for Dementia Canterbury. 

She plans to complete the route 

at least 78 times by December. 

That’s a total of 405.6km over the 

whole year. 

Whitehead said she is doing 

the challenge in memory of her 

aunt Joanie Sommerville who 

lost her battle with dementia in 

January last year. 

Said Whitehead: “She was a 

super warm, bubbly, and incredibly 

lovely person and it was 

pretty hard to watch her personality 

change.” 

Whitehead has raised about 

$3500 to date, which will go towards 

helping dementia patients 

and their families.

Red Cross meals need more 

wheels to meet demand 


THERE IS an urgent need 

for Meals on Wheels delivery 

drivers in Hornby and Halswell. 

The programme, run by Red 

Cross New Zealand, involves 

volunteers delivering hot lunches 

to people who have a disability 

or ongoing health problems that 

make it difficult for them to 

prepare a meal for themselves. 

The programme has been 

running since the 1950s. 

Programme co-ordinator 

Janine Shepherd said the 

number of deliveries has been 

growing. 

“There is just more of a need 

in these areas, and we urgently 

need more drivers to be able to 

cope,” she said. 

Shepherd said people come 

and go within the role due to 

other commitments or because 

they are getting older. 

“It is a constant thing to keep 

getting new drivers on board. 

We would like to attract some 

younger people as well, like 

maybe a mother with kids at 

school as it is only a few hours in 

the morning.” 

She said people who wish 

to volunteer need to have a 

New Zealand driver’s licence, 

a reliable car and be willing to 

undergo a police check. 

“The role is only Monday 

to Friday from 10.45am to 

1pm at the latest. You don’t 

have to do it every day 

and our volunteers get a 

sense of satisfaction being 

able to give back to the 

community.”

Bid to stop ‘harmful cat feeder’

RESIDENTS IN Papanui, 

Bryndwr and Bishopdale are 

calling for intervention from 

police, SPCA and their local 

MP to stop a woman they say is 

harming their pets. 

The group of cat owners have 

tracked the woman they have 

called the “local harmful cat 

feeder”. 

Seven-year-old cat Tabs is 

now on steroids after a case 

of vomiting left him severely 

underweight in December. 

He was ordered onto a strict 

diet, but owner Sara said it 

was proving tough when a cat 

feeder had been dishing out 

questionable cat food in her 

neighbourhood for years. 

“I know she’s fed my cat 

potato chips because he was 

vomiting daily. We had to put 

him in the bathroom at night 

because it’s easier to clean up. 

Just last week, he vomited up 

crinkle cuts and we don’t have 

crinkle cut chips in the house.” 

Videos and photos show a 

woman carrying bags of food 

and putting it on leaves or junk 

mail outside and inside people’s 

properties. She has also been 

seen grooming cats with a brush 

and in one video appearing to 

take a cat from underneath a 

fence. 

Sara said she had asked the 

woman to stop feeding her cat, 

but she continued to put food 

out every day.

“I usually see her on my street 

between 10am and 11am so I put 

him out after 2pm and someone 

else’s poor cat has eaten up the 

food.” 

Another resident, Sharmaine, 

said her cat, Lucky, ate food the 

woman had laid out and on the 

same day became very unwell 

and had to be put down. 

She said she could not prove 

the woman’s food caused him to 

get sick, but she was not taking 

any chances with her other cat 

Phoebe. 

“She’ll stand outside and 

click her fingers, like ‘come on’, 

trying to encourage my other 

cat outside and I look at her 

like ‘don’t even think about it’. I 

can’t even say anything, without 

being so, not hateful, just very 

angry and frustrated.” 

Kate, like Sara and Sharmaine, 

said she had asked the woman 

repeatedly to stop feeding her 

cat Archie, who she noticed 

had put on significant weight, 

despite being fed just once a day. 

She said she had laid a 

complaint with police after she 

confronted the woman, who was 

on her property on Saturday. 

“I told her to leave and I said 

I’m going to keep standing here 

until you leave, until you stop 

feeding my cat and she came 

right up to me and I said ‘don’t 

get physical with me love, if you 

do that you’re going to jail’.” 

Dozens of cat owners have 

shared their run-ins with the 

woman and stories of their 

sick cats on the Facebook page 

named Stop the Local Harmful 

Cat Feeder. 

A petition has gathered more 

than 430 signatures calling 

for police, SPCA and Ilam MP 

Sarah Pallett to act. 

Police confirmed they 

are assessing reports of 

the woman’s behaviour 

for criminality. A police 

spokesperson said any concerns 

about behaviour in the area 

should be reported. 

SPCA scientific officer Alison 

Vaughan was aware of the 

situation and the SPCA has been 

working with other agencies on 

the case. 

Bishopdale Medical Centre 

had put up a sign addressed 

to the cat feeder, asking 

them to stop feeding cats on 

their property because it was 

attracting flies and they were 

sick of cleaning it up. 

City council staff had 

followed up on complaints from 

residents, and the woman was 

spoken to but her actions were 

not deemed an offense under the

producer of the year. 

Lydia O’Dowd, 29, won a 

12-month mentorship programme 

and $4000 to advance her career in 

plant production. 

She will now compete for the 

Young Horticulturist of the year 

title and a prize pool of more than 

$20,000 at the final in Auckland 

from November

want to be. My job is so varied and

are contributing to the restoration 

of our natural environment in NZ.

A RECORD number of teams 

descended on Hagley Park over 

the weekend for Christchurch 

Netball Centre’s annual junior 

Rainbow tournament. 

Seventy-four teams of primary 

school-aged children across 

Canterbury participated in the 

popular event, designed to be 

a fun, supportive environment 

where children gain skills, 

confidence and a love for the 

game. This year’s tournament 

broke the record for the number 

of teams entered. 

Said CNC general manager 

Tom Houghton: “Our 

responsibility is to grow a love 

for the game of netball across 

Ōtautahi and beyond.” 

Numerous coaches, umpires, 

whistlers and officials help make 

the event possible. It has become 

known for its spectacular fancy 

dress and great community 

atmosphere.

dementia

uncle decided to raise funds 

for dementia by cycling the 

length of New Zealand and she 

wanted to do something similar 

to help. 

“I got the idea to do this 

challenge from a podcast I was 

listening to in 2021 where a 

woman in Auckland picked a 5km 

loop track and added an extra 

5km each month. 

“I thought it was really cool, 

although I haven’t really thought 

through what it entails.” 

Whitehead said her fundraising 

journey parallels what dementia 

patients go through. 

“When I started this in January 

it was relatively easy but has 

become progressively harder and I 

have had to have people help me. 

“This is what it is like for 

dementia patients, there are small 

and subtle changes and as they 

go further on their journey it 

becomes harder and the patient 

and the family needs more 

support.”

Kim Moss said she has always been community-minded.

Association’s new chair Kim 

Moss has stepped into the role 

with ease. 

Moss, 31, took over from Marc 

Duff in June who resigned after 

five years as chairman. 

She said she has always been 

about helping the little person 

and giving a voice to the little 

things that may not mean a 

whole lot to other people but will 

to others. 

“I remember I met with one 

resident who tripped on a tree 

root that had come up through 

the footpath and she broke her 

nose. 

“So I got the footpath sorted 

out to make it smoother. 

“I have volunteered at 

community lunches, I have been 

in Rotary for about 10 years, I 

like to make sure the city council 

is keeping footpaths and roads 

safe for residents. 

“It is about supporting them.” 

Moss and her husband 

Quentin have a daughter Ali, 5, 

and son Jack, 3. She stood as The 

People’s Choice candidate for the 

city council’s Hornby Ward in 

October’s local body elections. 

But she lost to Mark Peters, who 

won with 3069 votes compared 

to Moss’ 2348 votes. 

“I ran in the local body 

elections and obviously I was

unsuccessful. 

“But if it was meant to be it 

would’ve been. It was no skin 

taken off of my nose, people got 

to know me better and I made 

more connections. I also learnt a 

lot through the process.” 

Moss is currently a union 

organiser for the Public Services 

Association trade union. She has 

worked for the PSA for nearly 

eight years. 

“During the day I am a union 

organiser and I love it, I like 

making sure voices are heard,” 

she said. 

Moss said when she was 

studying for her Bachelor of 

Science at Canterbury University 

she worked for another union, 

the New Zealand Educational 

Institute, and found she enjoyed 

the role. 

She said she learnt about 

the Greater Hornby Residents 

Association when she was 

campaigning to be a city 

councillor and decided to join, 

especially as she still wanted to 

be involved with the community 

even if she was not an elected 

city council member.

“They talked about how they 

needed someone to take the 

lead on fundraising for the 

hydrotherapy pool and I said I 

was happy to do it for them.” 

Moss had been a member of 

the association for less than 

year when her predecessor Marc 

Duff resigned from the role after 

having been chair for the past 

five years. 

“I knew I had the skills for the 

role and I thought: ‘Why not?’ 

“And it is a great way to 

address what is needed for the 

community. 

“The association is a really 

great team and they have made 

things easier.” 

Moss said the hydrotherapy 

pool is one of its biggest projects 

and there is a lot going on behind 

the scenes. 

The hydrotherapy pool is to 

be a part of the new Matatiki 

Hornby Centre which is set to 

open in early 2024. 

Both the association and 

Hornby Rotary, along with the 

city council, have been leading 

the way to fundraise for it. 

Currently about $710,000 has 

been raised to go towards the 

pool with the aim being $1.4 

million. 

A new fundraiser, buy a 

bubble, allows people to buy a 

decorative bubble that will go 

on the wall of the building with 

their name on it. 

“The buy a bubble fundraiser 

allows people to get recognition 

for helping make a difference 

within their community. We 

couldn’t do what we do without 

the help of locals.” 

She said the association has a 

few events coming up, including 

a disco, quiz night, a can drive, 

and a pool party. 

Along with its monthly 

meetings, the planned Splash 

for Cash event will also help 

fundraise for the hydrotherapy 

pool. 

She said one of the key things 

she wants to do is future-proof 

the association and make sure 

it stays alive by getting in fresh 

blood to bring in new ideas. 

“I have been told we do more

than most residents’ associations 

do. 

“It shows we are paving the 

way of where associations should 

be. 

“Succession planning is key 

– you see other clubs who are 

dwindling but have not planned 

to be able to get fresh blood in.” 

Moss said a huge issue at the 

moment is crime and safety. The 

association aims to make people 

feel safer in their community 

by bringing them together and 

ensuring everyone knows which 

doors they can knock on if they 

need help. 

“People talk about how 

you used to know your local 

constable, you used to know 

your neighbours, not just the 

ones next to you, but everyone 

on your street. 

“We want to bring everyone 

together again. 

“We are asking ourselves what 

we can do to bring everyone 

together.” 

Earlier this year, Hornby 

residents were told they were not 

going to get anymore police as 

there was a greater need for them 

in other parts of the city. It came 

after the association presented 

police with a petition signed by 

about 1000 people asking for the 

station to be manned 24/7. 

Moss said the police decision 

was “extremely disappointing” 

and residents felt like they had 

not been heard. 

“The police presented us with 

data that showed x, y, and z so 

the strong message we are trying 

to get out there is to report 

everything because with the 

police using statistics and data, 

we need to give them the data 

and show them,” she said. 

Moss said going forward 

the association will continue 

to see what it can do for the 

community. 

“We are always asking 

ourselves what we can do. 

“We want to make sure 

people know which community 

groups they can go to, get more 

residents volunteering with the 

community patrol and what 

else the city council can do, 

like installing better lighting in 

parks.”
