End of the road for
historic Mitre Hotel
Demolition work is under way at the Mitre Hotel on Norwich Quay in Lyttelton. The
96-year-old portside building has been unusable since the earthquakes, when fences
and a hefty barrier were put up to separate it from the road. EQC and a private insurer
had previously determined it would be uneconomical to repair the hotel. It is not
known what the landowner intends to do with the soon-to-be-vacant site.
Jury hears
why murder
accused
stopped
medication
• By Anna Leask
LAUREN DICKASON told a
psychiatrist she stopped taking
her antidepressant medication
for “immigration purposes”, a
jury has heard at her High Court
murder trial.
Dr Justin Barry-Walsh said
the medication the accused
triple murderer had been taking
would have been “well clear of
her system within days” and her
mental state was so fragile she
“left herself open to an increased
risk of deterioration”.
Dickason,
42, admits
smothering her
children Liane,
6, and 2-year-old
twins Maya
and Karla to
death at their
Timaru home in
September 2021.
But she denies
Lauren
Dickason
it was murder and has pleaded
not guilty by reason of insanity or
infanticide.
Her trial – before Justice
Cameron Mander and a jury – is
in its fourth week.
Barry-Walsh gave evidence on
Tuesday and was cross-examined
by Crown Prosecutor Andrew
McRae yesterday.
Defence psychiatrist backs insanity
• From page 1
He believes Dickason’s
depression was severe enough
at the time of the offending to
support defences of both insanity
and infanticide.
Yesterday he revealed Dickason
gave him three explanations as
to why she stopped taking her
antidepressants in early 2021.
She had been prescribed the
drugs after admitting she’d had
thoughts of harming or killing
her children.
But after embarking on
a wellness programme and
improving her general health she
decided to try living without the
medication.
She did not consult with her
doctor before doing this.
Barry-Walsh said Dickason
also told him she felt the drugs
were not working for her,
and about “coming off it for
immigration purposes”.
Dickason and her husband
Graham emigrated to New
Zealand in August 2021 after he
secured a job as an orthopaedic
surgeon at Timaru Hospital.
When the family arrived in
New Zealand, their immigration
advisor sought detailed
information about Dickason’s
mental health.
She was diagnosed with a
depressive disorder when she
was 15 and had struggled with
FAMILY: One of the last photos taken of the Dickasons
before the children were allegedly killed by their mother.
PHOTO: FACEBOOK
her mental health since then –
particularly during her journey
to become a mother which
included 17 rounds of IVF and
the loss of a baby at 18 weeks
gestation.
The day she killed the girls
Dickason had been asked for
more information about her
diagnosis and the court earlier
heard she felt there was “no hope”
she’d be allowed to remain in the
country.
Barry-Walsh told the court
yesterday in his opinion
Dickason “hadn’t fully
recovered” from postpartum
depression and the “multiple hit”
of the “stressors” relating to her
family’s emigration when she
stopped her meds.
“Once she stopped she left
herself at an increased risk
of deterioration . . . it is not
surprising her depression
deteriorated,” he said.
When questioned about
his assessment and opinion
of Dickason, Barry-Walsh
maintained his conclusion.
He said there was “an element
of psychosis emerging at the time
of the alleged offending”.
“She was developing psychotic
symptoms as part of the
depression at the time,” he said.
He also said he was certain
Dickason was experiencing
“mood-congruent delusions” the
day she allegedly murdered the
little girls.
He said it was common for
people to hide such symptoms.
“This is a woman who
overwhelmingly keeps things to
herself . . . and people often keep
delusions to themselves,” he said.
Barry-Walsh provided his
formal report to the court well
before the trial, but said after
sitting and listening to the
evidence so far he was even more
convinced Dickason did not
know killing her children was
“morally wrong” at the time
and should not be held
responsible.
He repeatedly refuted McRae’s
suggestion that Dickason killed
her kids out of frustration and
rage with “no clear forethought”
of taking her own life.
McRae posed that Dickason
“got so angry killing the children
and then, realising what she’s
done, attempted suicide on
herself”.
Barry-Walsh replied: “I do not
accept that anger is a plausible
motive for what happened.
“I don’t accept it as a viable
contention but yes if I put that
to one side . . . yes (McRae’s
allegation) is consistent – but it
is also consistent with someone
who decided to suicide and kill
her children.
“That behaviour is so driven,
so determined that the most
plausible explanation is the one
I have advanced that – this
woman was so depressed she
decided she had to die, and
she decided she hat to take the
children with her.
“That is the only plausible
explanation as to why she did
what she did . . . it’s – tragically –
easier to kill your children than
yourself.”
When briefly re-examined by
defence lawyer Anne Toohey,
Barry-Walsh further reiterated
his point.
“This was a deliberate,
methodical, ghastly series of
events where she didn’t just kill
one of her children – she killed
all three of her children, one after
the other.
“That is not consistent with
someone who is just angry . . . It
just doesn’t get close in my view.”
Barry-Walsh is one of five
experts called to give evidence at
Dickason’s trial.
from sometimes-serious
depression, but maintains she
knew what she was doing when
she killed the girls.
Opening the Crown case on
July 17, McRae alleged Dickason
was an angry and frustrated
woman who was “resentful of
how the children stood in the
way of her relationship with
her husband” and killed them
“methodically and purposefully,
perhaps even clinically”.
Man threatened to kill
• By Emily Moorhouse
WARNING: This article
contains graphic language and
may be upsetting
A MAN who threatened to kill
the mother of his child and stuff
her in a suitcase also took a swing
at the family’s social worker,
telling her “I’ll cut you open
and stick an apple in your f*****
mouth you pig.”
But the man wasn’t so tough
in court and cried in the dock,
stating he was angry because
he just wanted to see his son
and thought if he bought him
presents the boy would want to
spend time with him.
The man, 35, whom can’t
named in order to protect the
identity of his son, appeared at
the district court for sentencing
on Friday.
He faced a representative
charge of threatening to kill,
threatening to destroy property
and threatening to do grievous
bodily harm.
Judge Murray Hunt sentenced
the man to 10 months’
imprisonment, granting him
leave to apply for home detention
if he could find a suitable
address. The judge also imposed
six months of post-release
conditions.
On May 28 and 29 this year, the
man sent flurries of abusive voice
messages to the mother of his
child, threatening to kill her and
hurt their 11-year-old son.
He told the woman he was
“ready for war” and listed off
various weapons he would use
against her, including firecrackers,
bombs, knives and bats.
“I’ve only got one box of f*****
bullets so may as well blow everything
up.”
The man said the woman
would appear in the media after
he “stuffed” her into a suitcase.
“I’ll cut you in half and put you
in a f***** boot.”
This report was produced
by Open Justice – Te Pātītī,
a Public Interest Journalism
initiative funded by NZ on Air
“Hopefully I see you at the bus
stop so I can plough the f***** car
into ya.”
He then began sending abusive
voice messages to the woman’s
daughter, stating he would slit
her mother’s throat and throw
a “Molotov” through her garage.
“I’m at a real dangerous point
in my life right now where I’m
getting ready to kill someone and
I f***** mean that.”
“I’m going to kick your f*****
mum in the face.”
The man then began making
threats toward the family’s social
worker, stating he would put
a knife in her neck. The social
worker became so fearful, she
changed the location of her work.
“If you’re listening (social
worker) f*** you, you fat wh***
I’ll cut you open and stick an
pig.”
When the judge asked the man
if he wanted to say anything he
became emotional in the dock
and spoke of how much he cared
for his son.
“I just wanted to see my son
on his birthday . . . I thought if I
bought him lots of presents, he
would want to spend time with
me.
“I didn’t realise he just wants
to see his dad being a better
person.”
The man said spending time in
prison has made him realise how
“disgusting” his behaviour and
language were and he would like
to apologise to his son’s mother
but understands this needs to be
on her terms.
The man’s lawyer Clare Yardley
said the messages her client
sent were “ghastly and unforgivable”,
but he now has a clear
mind without the interference
of drugs and wants to work as a
youth support worker.
Yardley described the man as
being at a “turning point” in his
life, having cut ties with gangs
and getting “clean” from drugs
during the two months he spent
in custody.
She asked the judge to consider
a sentence of community
work that would give the man a
“positive outlet” and could act
as a stepping stone in getting
employment.
Judge Hunt said the man’s offending
created real anxiety and
fear for the victims, particularly
the social worker who had to
change her location of work as
she feared for her safety.
“You were out of control,” he
told the man.
The judge said the social
worker was just doing her job
and didn’t deserve to be treated
the way she was by the man. He
granted a protection order for
both women against the man.
He gave the man discounts for
his early guilty plea and history
outlined in the pre-sentence
report, stating “Things haven’t
been easy for you”.
COURT 9
‘It’s really hard without him here’
• By Nathan Morton
A DISTRAUGHT mother has
spoken of the “hole in her world”
after her son died in a tragic fire
caused by lighting a cigarette
while living in a care facility.
Adam Duncan, 29, died in
“very traumatic circumstances”,
a coroner has found, but stopped
short of making recommendations
to prevent future deaths in
similar circumstances after the
care facility introduced its own
changes, including mandatory
supervision of smoking residents
and buzzer alerts.
Duncan battled Huntington’s
disease – an inherited progressive
brain disorder that had
already claimed the lives of his
father, grandfather, and aunt –
and suffered burns to a third of
his body, passing away from his
injuries in Christchurch Hospital
two days after the January 2017
accident.
His mother, Pauline Roberts
and her partner, Russell, told the
Herald the coronial process took
“a hell of a long time” and noted,
“the pain doesn’t leave until the
book is closed”.
Roberts said the experience
had been hard on the whole
family.
“I just miss him, his humour
and talking – it’s really hard
without him,” she said.
“He was our legend in our
family, a hero. For him to struggle
[with Huntington’s] for so
long and stay above water, then
go under the way he did was a
nightmare. But we have to live
with it.”
The coroner’s report, released
on Thursday last week, tells how
Duncan lived in a flat at Te Ruru,
operated by New Zealand Care
Group Ltd, on Woodham Rd in
Linwood.
He was diagnosed with Huntington’s
disease at the age of 13
but had experienced its symptoms
since the age of 10 – which
the coroner said was unusually
young for the illness to present.
Since 2007, Duncan had
moved between care facilities
before moving into Te Ruru in
2012 where he was the youngest
of nine residents.
Behavioural issues meant he
was moved from the main house
to a self-contained flat where he
was considered to be living “very
independently”.
He was described by the coroner
as a man with “a big heart”.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening,
and photography, and had also
raised money for a sick family
member and a staff member’s
village in Africa. The coroner
said he did his best not to let his
illness dampen his life experiences.
On the morning of the accident,
one worker heard an alarm
go off, while another heard a
humming sound.
Both went to investigate. They
found Duncan walking down a
hallway in flames from his waist
up. He appeared to be wearing
pyjamas and had a cigarette in
his mouth.
One staff member rushed him
to a bathroom and washed Duncan
down with cold water. He
was conscious when emergency
services arrived to take him to
the hospital.
He was placed in an induced
coma for two days. It was then
determined between the hospital
and Duncan’s family that ongoing
treatment “would not be Mr
Duncan’s overall best interest”.
Duncan passed away on January
30, 2017 while in palliative
care.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand concluded the source
of the fire came from Duncan’s
lighter, which he’d used to light a
cigarette that morning.
He was a smoker before moving
into Te Ruru. Roberts told
the coroner of her son’s “dangerous
habit” of pulling his jersey
from the neck and lighting his
smoke underneath it.
The report included a diary
entry from staff on the day of
the accident which stated: “[No]
unsupervised smoking – people
must have a staff present when
having a cigarette to minimise
[the] risk of fire”.
Back in 2016, according to the
report, Roberts mentioned to
a Te Ruru staff member she’d noticed
Duncan had been dropping
more cigarettes than usual and
would now supervise him when
he was at their home.
She told the coroner the staffer
acknowledged her comment but
nothing further happened.
The coroner concluded there
was enough information available
to NZ Care prior to Duncan’s
death to suggest they “ought
to have reviewed his smoking
through a safety-risk lens”.
The coroner outlined the
changes made by NZ Care at
its facilities following Duncan’s
death, starting with a nationwide
risk assessment of all its patients
who smoked.
Smokers at Te Ruru are now
only permitted to smoke in designated
areas and support workers
must supervise. Meanwhile,
the facility’s fire alarms now
contact FENZ directly and assist
buttons were installed in all flats.
According to the coroner,
the chance of a similar incident
occurring at the facility is now
“significantly mitigated” by the
steps put in place.
“In this setting, I do not make
any recommendations,” the
coroner concluded.
Roberts is thankful for the
work Te Ruru has done to prevent
the tragedy her son experienced,
yet described the changes
as a double-edged sword.
She said the safety of those living
in the facility was ultimately
paramount.
“The sadness is it took Adam’s
death to do this,” she said.
“I’m pleased something good
came out of it but I feel a lot of
the changes should have been in
place anyway.
“He was so spirited and made
an imprint in all of our lives. It’s
really hard without him here.”
POSSIBLE solutions have
been offered to a family whose
property has flooded for the past
two winters.
Anna and Josh Pedersen and
their three young children were
once again forced to moved
out of their Tancreds Rd,
Ladbrooks, property after the
heavy rainfall event at the end of
last month.
Their property, along with others
in the area, is located within
the Halswell Drainage Scheme
and is adjacent to Environment
Canterbury’s Blacklers drain.
The family met with ECan
rivers manager David Aires to
discuss their issues on Thursday,
last week.
“It was a really good chat, very
productive, learned a bit more
again,” Josh said.
Following the meeting Josh
said he received an email from
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Flood victims discuss solutions
ECan proposing a potential
solution. In the email a senior
river engineer provided some
commentary around the merits
of a floodgate.
Two locations for a floodgate
were offered, somewhere in the
downstream 300m of Blacklers
Drain, or adjacent to Perrymans
Rd. It was suggested the
floodgate be plumbed into the
road, as it is raised above general
ground level, either immediately
upstream or downstream of the
road.
The engineer said those locations
have the least risk of being
bypassed by water overtopping
general ground level elsewhere.
The engineer said effects on
the other areas are yet to be
investigated.
“A major issue with either
option is the displacement of
floodwaters and effects on others
further down the system, if
indeed a gate would be effective,”
the email said.
Josh said it remains to be seen
whether any solutions will be
implemented.
“I’m certainly more positive.
It’s probably now just a cost
question I think and the
willingness of ECan to do
something.”
Anna said it can take up to six
weeks for their 4ha property to
drain completely after flooding.
They keep some animals,
including cattle, sheep, and
pigs. When the flooding hits,
the cattle and sheep have to be
moved to the neighbours’.
In The Star last week the
family blamed ECan, which they
said was not listening to their
concerns over the flooding.
“I feel like they are just
expecting us to put our heads
in the sand and go away,” Anna
said at the time.
Josh said he has since heard
from other property owners
LAKE: Anna and Josh Pedersen’s 4ha Ladbrooks property has flooded again this winter.
in the area
experiencing
similar issues.
Akaroa Recreational Ground, Akaroa
The Akaroa French Festival is a biennial event
celebrating the unique culture and heritage
of New Zealand’s only French settlement in the
harbourside town of Akaroa.
The next Akaroa French Festival will be held
from the 6th to the 8th October, 2023.
The festival commences on the Friday evening
with the official opening. This is followed by
Le Marché de Nuit– the Night Market, where
fabulous food and wine vendors, live music
and dancing entertain party-goers.
Saturday morning begins with ‘Landings’,
reenacting the tales of the many brave souls
who came to call Akaroa home: from the first
Maori to the whalers and then of course, to
the French and German settlers on board the
Comte de Paris. Next, our famous Parade with
brass band will lead the crowd to the Akaroa
Recreational Grounds for the commencement
of Market Day.
The festival hub will be in the Akaroa
Recreational Ground, where guests can enjoy
some live music, taste local food and wine
as well as lots of French cuisine, or take in
the local fashion show and a French cooking
demonstration. For the more energetic, Frenchthemed
competitions will be held including:
cock crowing, a waiter’s race and multiple
French games enjoyed by all the family.
Saturday evening is definitely party time!
Our show-stopping, Le Cabaret, will be found
in the Big Top marquee featuring comedy,
Le Can Can and risqué burlesque. Revellers
dance the night away to great music from
New Zealand’s very best entertainers.
Sunday is a real taste of France with La
Brocante, an opportunity to search for
treasure or strike a bargain with local vendors
and professionals selling antiques, collectibles
and vintage wares. We also have Le Cirque
Du Croissant happening in the big tent which
is a fun show for kids of all ages.
Akaroa French Festival shines a light on all that
Banks Peninsula has to offer.
Flaky icing: Cost of repainting
big donut hard to swallow
• By Daniel Alvey
SELWYN ratepayers have forked
out almost $18,000 to repaint
Springfield’s donut over the past
two-and-a-half years.
And that cost will be even
more, because another repaint is
planned for this summer.
Springfield Community
Association chair Graeme
Dawson said the problem was
an ongoing issue that needed a
better solution.
“The paint they put on it
doesn’t work, and it lasts three
months. It’s a bit sad really.”
Dawson said they want a
solution to the paint issues that
is going to last.
“It’s the council spending
ratepayers’ money.”
The donut has been repainted
four times since 2020 at a cost
of $17,864.57 and will likely be
repainted again over summer,
but this time the Selwyn District
Council believes it will last.
“The nature of the donut
and its construction presents
challenges for maintenance,
and we have reviewed the whole
process around painting the
donut including preparation,
AY CARAMBA: The Springfield donut has been repainted four times since 2020 at a cost
of $17,845.57. Right – it was originally installed to promote The Simpsons Movie.
epoxy and paint products, to put
together a plan for repainting
the donut this
financial year,”
said district
council reserves
operations
manager
Jonathan
Crawford
Jonathan
Crawford.
“This work will
be completed
when the weather warms and
includes work to address a range
of issues that should improve the
long-term maintenance of the
donut.”
Dawson said the donut makes
people stop in the town.
“It does attract a lot of people
stopping to take photographs.”
The original donut was
only ever designed to be up
for six weeks when it was
installed in 2007 as promotion
for The Simpsons Movie, but
was popular enough it got a
permanent spot in the town.
However, in 2009, an arson
attack left it burnt beyond
repair. For three years a tractor
tyre was put in its place until
2012, when it was replaced
with the much sturdier
concrete version that’s in
place today.
Orana Park’s
new gibbon
settling in
• By Geoff Sloan
ORANA PARK has welcomed
its newest resident, a new male
siamang gibbon.
‘Suka’ was transferred as part
of an international breeding
programme, which aims
to increase the numbers of
endangered animals.
The 9-year-old siamang gibbon
quickly introduced himself to the
park’s 10-year-old female, Basuki,
after completing quarantine.
Zookeeper Spencer Hart said
it was great to see him swinging
around and having a good time.
“He’s become very friendly with
our young female and it’s just
good to see that they’re getting
along so quickly and so readily.”
Suka has come to Christchurch
from Pairi Daiza Zoo in Belgium.
Hart said siamang gibbon
populations are critically
endangered in the wild, mostly due
to deforestation and loss of habitat.
Aerospace team rockets to success in US
A TEAM OF students are
coming back to earth after
building and launching a
winning rocket 10km into the
sky at an international aerospace
competition.
The Canterbury University
team won their category and
placed third overall at the recent
Spaceport America Cup in New
Mexico in the United States.
The event is the world’s largest
student rocket engineering conference
and competition, with
158 teams taking part this year
from 24 countries.
The 10 students who took part
are members of UC Aerospace,
a student-led club sponsored by
UC’s Mechanical Engineering
department. They were the only
team from New Zealand competing
and to win their category
they had to design, build and
launch a rocket that reached as
close as possible to the target of
30,000 feet (about 10km).
Team leader Alicia Smith said
they went into the competition
aiming to win and were thrilled
with the result.
“We’ve put UC on the international
stage as a highly
competitive rocket engineering
team, and we’re looking forward
to what the club achieves next.
“We worked incredibly hard
for six months building the rocket,
testing all the subsystems, and
LIFT-OFF: The winning Canterbury University Aerospace Spaceport America Cup team
included Alicia Smith (left), Jack Davies, Reuben Van Dorp and Avalon Beker, and six others.
doing test launches to validate
everything. It was awesome to
watch it launch in the New Mexico
desert and to have everything
work so well.”
The Kiwis were up against
teams from some of the most
prestigious universities in the
world, and many teams were two
or three times larger than theirs.
“Winning our category and
coming third overall is definitely
a big accomplishment that we’re
pretty proud of,” said Smith.
Smith, who works at Dawn
Aerospace part-time, will finish
a Bachelor of Engineering with
Honours in Mechanical Engineering,
with a minor in Aerospace
Engineering, at the end of
the year. She has already lined up
a full-time job at Rocket Lab in
Auckland starting next year.
“I think being in the UC Aerospace
club which I joined in my
second year and was president
of last year and doing this work
designing and building rockets,
is what’s really helped me in my
job interviews and set me apart,”
she said.
“What draws me to working
in aerospace is wanting to know
what’s out there and how we can
benefit humanity with what we
do and discover in space.”
The UC Aerospace team
included Smith, Avalon Beker,
Henry Eden-Mann, Reuben
Van Dorp, Jacob Saunders, Jack
Davies, Pieter Leigh, James
Graham, Caleb Melchers and
Peter Lee.
Lee, the UC Aerospace president,
said it was a huge honour
for the team to represent New
Zealand in this year’s event.
“Our involvement shows the
aerospace capabilities of both
UC and the country on the world
stage.”
The competition began well
ahead of the event because every
team had to provide milestones,
technical reports, and safety
reviews prior to launch, he said.
The students designed and
built all aspects of the rocket
within the tight deadlines of the
competition and on top of their
academic course work.
In February last year, UC
Aerospace students launched
a rocket at Birdlings Flat in an
attempt to exceed the altitude
record for a student-led rocket
programme. Unfortunately, lost
data meant the students could
not confirm if they had exceeded
the record. Safety measures were
in place, after a botched launch
in 2019.
Hornets a step away from
first grand final in nine years
MOMENTUM WILL be on
the Halswell Hornets side as
they look to win their sixth
match in a row when they take
on the Hornby Panthers in
Saturday’s preliminary final.
The Hornets are in search of
their first grand final appearance
since 2014 after a narrow 20-16
win over the Eastern Eagles at
the weekend.
The two teams last met in June,
when the Panthers emerged with
a 26-10 win. It was also the last
time Halswell lost this season.
Hornets
given everything.”
Hubbard said they were in the
lead for a majority of the match
against the Eagles but it was a
“real competitive game”.
A REMATCH of Tuesday’s
thrilling 34-34 draw between
Kereru A and Technical A will
headline the premier netball
semi-finals.
The two sides have met twice
this season, with their first
match-up back in April ending
in a slim 54-52 win to Kereru.
It was a similar scene in the
last round robin match on
Tuesday, with Technical leading
by four heading into the last
quarter.
After trailing in the first three
periods, Kereru finally kicked
into gear in the last 15 minutes,
drawing level with Technical.
In the other semi-final, it will
be a rematch of last year’s final
between UC A and Lincoln University
A.
Both teams have managed onegoal
wins over each other this
season and go into the playoff on
the back of strong wins.
UC A produced possibly their
best game of the season with a
50-goal thumping of Kia Toa A,
81-31.
It was a different story for the
Massetti Cup winning Panthers
qualifying final against the
Linwood half Daniel Hartley
slotted a last-minute field goal to
Kate Grant also consistently
effective.
Grant shot 48 goals from 52
attempts in Lincoln University’s
63-34 win over their B team in
the last game of the round.
first of two seeding semi-finals
The loss was Hornby’s first
in eight games, with their last
coming against the Eagles on
May 13.
The preliminary final will be
the third time in a row Hornby
Tight semi-final expected
after round robin draw
to back up their 44-35 win over
Kereru B when they play each
Both teams will be playing
to avoid potential relegation to
Marist, Carlton Redcliffs meet
again in qualifying final
• By Jaime Cunningham
DEFENCE WILL be key for
Marist when they meet Carlton
Redcliffs in Saturday’s qualifying
final – a week after they last met.
Marist claimed the Rosebowl
Cup after winning the round
robin stage of the women’s Canterbury
Premier League for the
first time in the team’s history at
the weekend. They lifted the cup
with a 3-0 win over Carlton.
Marist head coach Joe Bartholomew
was “really happy” with
his team’s efforts in the round
robin.
“Winning the Rosebowl for the
first time is very exciting for the
club. I guess now we just have
one more job to do.”
It was also the third consecutive
game in which Marist’s defence
prevented any goals being
scored.
Bartholomew said goalkeeper
Olivia Dyer had a “blinder of a
game”.
Marist have produced a series
of impressive results since their
one and only loss to Avon on July
1, beating Harewood 5-0 and
thumping Hornby 9-0 before the
win against Carlton.
Bartholomew said the result
was a massive credit to the team’s
defence.
Coastal must win to keep
National League hopes alive
“After the game, we looked at
the goals against us on the table,
which we topped by having the
lowest (13),” he said.
Marist were able to capitalise
on Carlton’s weaknesses better
than they did when they drew
3-3 with Carlton in June, Bartholomew
said.
However, Marist are preparing
for Carlton to come back firing.
“Obviously we don’t expect
that it’ll be the same again this
week,” Bartholomew said.
“We’ve just been building from
our big performance on Saturday
really.
“We’re focused on being better
in certain game situations at
training to apply to the game.”
COASTAL SPIRIT will look to
stomp out a series of impressive
results to end the season, starting
with a win against Nomads on
Saturday, after their promising
winning streak ended on
Saturday.
Now seven points behind the
second-placed Cashmere Technical,
Coastal need to win all four
of their remaining games to have
a chance at qualifying for the
National League.
They will be favourites to beat
Nomads, who sit seventh with
17 points. But Nomads will be
brimming with confidence after
a solid 2-1 win over Green Island
last week.
A 3-2 loss to Nelson Suburbs at
the weekend saw Coastal bumped
to fourth-place ahead of this
weekend’s round 15 clash. Coastal
were lucky to avoid a larger loss
after a red card was handed to
Roque Fuentes-Salinas in the
67th-minute.
It was Coastal’s first loss since
June, and marked the end of a
three-game winning streak for
the side. Despite an own-goal in
the 24th-minute, Nomads managed
to gain a much-needed three
points after goals to Luca MacLeod-Watt
and Lorenzo Gauci.
Struggling Selwyn United take
on Green Island on Saturday after
a 3-1 loss to Technical. Selwyn
failed to challenge Technical
in the first half, with Technical
netting three goals in the first 28
minutes.
Jamie Carrodus managed to
score for Selwyn in the second
half, but it wasn’t enough to see
Selwyn move up the standings.
Technical will need a dominant
win over Dunedin on Saturday to
keep both the Royals and Coastal
at arm’s length.
Meanwhile, Christchurch United
travel to Saxton Fields to take
on Nelson Suburbs on Sunday.
Ferrymead Bays FC showed
signs of promise against United
on Friday but lost 3-0.
Bays will be expected to win
when they host FC Twenty 11 on
Saturday.
Despite having several shots
at goal, FC were dominated by
Dunedin’s spectacular attack last
weekend and lost 7-0. Wins in
the last four rounds would see FC
avoid relegation.
A win in the qualifying final
would see Marist progress directly
to the grand final in two
weeks time, with the loser of
the qualifying final playing the
winner of Saturday’s elimination
final.
Harewood and HSOB/Burnside
will contest the elimination
final on Saturday after finishing
third and fourth respectively.
The teams last clashed on July
1, when Harewood’s Kate Atkinson
scored the only goal in a narrow
1-0 win. Their first match-up
ended in a 2-2 draw in May.
Harewood come off a 4-2
win over winless Southern who
scored their first goals since June.
HSOB/Burnside managed to
hold off a persistent Hornby side
with a 5-3 win on Saturday.
In the men’s competition, topof-the-table
HSOB/Burnside and
Carlton Redcliffs will vie for a
place in the grand final.
HSOB/Burnside claimed the
President’s Trophy after a hardfought
4-2 win over Hornby last
week. Carlton managed a 5-1
win over Marist due to a Jordan
Whittleson hat-trick.
HSOB/Burnside go into the
match with the psychological
edge, having won both encounters
with Carlton this year. They
last met on July 8 when HSOB/
Burnside managed a narrow 3-2
win.
will meet Harewood in the
elimination final after finishing
fourth in the round robin stages.
Marist will be hoping
third time’s a charm against
Harewood on Saturday after
being pipped by them twice this
season. Harewood go into the
clash following a 5-2 win over
Southern, while Marist suffered
their second loss in three weeks
to Carlton. Meanwhile, Hornby
and Avon will play off for fifthplace
after promising round
robin campaigns, while Southern
meet University for seventh.
Avon’s women’s side have a bye
this week, and Southern meet
Hornby for the sixth-place
playoff.
CBHS turn attention to SI final
• By Jaime Cunningham
CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
will have little time to reminisce
over their first Miles Toyota
Premiership title in five years as
they turn their focus to the South
Island final on August 19.
The blue-and-blacks will take
on either Southland or Otago
boys’ high school next Saturday
following their brilliant 30-26
win over rivals Nelson College.
It was CBHS’s first regional
title since 2018.
Co-coach Mike Drury said
it was a “real thrill” to topple
previously unbeaten Nelson in
the final.
“The success of this team is
based around some excellent
leadership, with the co-captains
Jake Frost and head boy
Manumaua Letiu providing cool
heads and leading from the front
all season.”
The lead changed between
Nelson and CBHS five times
throughout the game.
Nelson were first to score, with
halfback Oliver Gibbons scoring
the first of his hat trick of tries in
the 10th minute.
Drury said the dominance
of the team’s forward pack
gave first-five Will Haig and
second-five Geordie Hassall opportunities
on attack, while also
allowing the maul to function.
Hooker Letiu dotted down for
his first of two tries from a powerful
maul after 25 minutes.
Their 10-7 lead didn’t last
long, with Nelson pouncing on
a CBHS defensive error to go
up 14-10 with seven minutes
remaining in the first half.
However, a try to centre Jack
Busch-Ward saw CBHS go into
the break with a narrow 17-14
lead.
Halfback Gibbons managed
to cross the line for Nelson once
again after halftime. But the momentum
quickly shifted to CBHS
when co-captain Letiu scored his
second before Hassall nailed a
scoring his third try of the match
to narrow the score. But CBHS
were able to hold on to possession
before Hassall closed out
the game by tapping the ball and
kicking it out.
The winner of next weekend’s
final will progress to the National
have featured seven times previously,
last winning the national
Two crews make top five in Paris
• By Jaime Cunningham
WILD WEATHER couldn’t
dampen the spirits of the
11 Christchurch rowers at
the under-19 world rowing
championships in France.
Two crews narrowly missed
out on medals at the five-day
regatta in Paris, which was
reduced to just three days due to
stormy weather.
Although the racing schedule
was tightened, the men’s and
women’s coxed eights managed
to finish fourth and fifth
respectively.
The men’s coxed eight
had a sprinkling of this year’s
St Bede’s Maadi Cup-winning
crew in the boat. Samuel
Woodgate and Matthew Glen
featured in the crew which won
the first heat in 5min 40.77sec,
led by St Bede’s head coach Dale
Maher.
Fergus Johnston (Christ’s
College) and Oscar Clatworthy
(Cashmere High) were also part
of the crew.
After pipping Romania in their
heat, the boys’ were unable to
do the same in the final. They
finished fourth, just under 6sec
behind gold medal winning
Great Britain with a time of
5min 54.29sec.
The women’s eight had just
three boats in their heat, and
claimed second behind Germany
in 6min 27.21sec to progress to
the repêchage.
Rangi Ruru students Georgie
Bethell, Nicole Vance, Alice
Wallis, Phoebe Wallis and
coxswain Annabel Wynn-
Williams featured at the agegroup
world championships for
the second year in a row.
After they narrowly missed
out on medals last year, it was a
similar story for the group once
again.
A competitive A final saw
Great Britain (6min 26sec),
Germany (6min 26.09sec),
Romania (6 min 26.14sec) and
the United States (6min 26.24sec)
separated by 0.24sec, followed
by New Zealand in fifth (6min
31.17sec).
Travelling reserves Milly
Farrell (St Margaret’s College)
and Charlie Poulter (Christ’s
College) also competed in other
categories.
Farrell featured in the highlycompetitive
women’s single scull
event. After finishing fifth in
heat five, Farrell qualified for
the quarter-finals by finishing
second in her repêchage.
Unfortunately an A/B final
was out of reach, with Farrell
managing to finish fifth. But a
tight schedule saw Farrell claim
fifth in the D final, which gave
her an overall ranking of 21st out
of 27 competitors.
Poulter raced in the men’s
pair alongside Waikato’s Logan
Spencer. Despite finishing sixth
in their heat and repêchage, the
crew to pip Taipei in the D final
to finish 19th overall.
NEWS 21
Kobori victory puts him in
company of Nicklaus, Woods
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
• By Neville Idour
CANTERBURY golfer
Kazuma Kobori has stunned
the world’s best amateurs by
winning the Western Amateur
Championships in Illinois.
First played in 1899, it is the
world’s third-oldest amateur
championship after the British
Amateur (1885) and the US
Amateur (1895).
Past champions of the
tournament, which featured 156
players from across the world
facing four rounds of strokeplay
followed by matchplay for the
top 16 players, include Jack
Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and
Tiger Woods.
Kobori, 21, recorded rounds
of 69, 69, 72 and 65 to be tied for
ninth to progress.
His final round was crucial
as he was three shots outside
the top 16 with nine holes left
but made five birdies in the last
seven holes, including 17 and 18,
to get into the matchplay.
Kobori’s first match was a
nerve-tingler, requiring two
extra holes.
He then won his quarterfinal
2-up and enjoyed a 6 & 5 win in
the semi-final against US Mid
Amateur champion Matthew
McLean, of Northern Ireland.
His opponent in the final
was South African Christiaan
Maas, and the tournament’s
first final between two southern
hemisphere players was gripping
and not decided until the final
green.
Maas holed out from a bunker
for a miracle birdie on the first
hole, but Kobori responded with
a 7.5m curling birdie to match it.
Kobori then went 2-up before
Maas came back to lead by one
after the 10th.
Kobori evened after a brilliant
up-and-down birdie from a deep
bunker on 12.
Still even after 16 holes, Maas’
tee shot on 17 came to rest
behind a tree, allowing Kobori to
Thursday August 10 2023 The Star
go 1-up with a regulation par.
Standing on the 18th
tee, Kobori saw the green
surrounded by fans and
proceeded to provide a final
highlight for the throng.
Finding the fairway, a lofted
shot to the green left Kabori
needing a 4.5m putt for birdie
and the win.
“I gave it a shot and it started
to dribble towards the hole,”
Kobori said.
“It stayed on line, and a foot
from the hole I knew it was going
in.
“To win a tournament that I
only thought I could be a small
part of is an incredible feeling.”
Kobori walked the putt into
the hole, joining 2008 winner
Danny Lee as the second New
Zealander to win the George R.
Thorne Trophy. This puts him in
good stead for the US Amateur,
which starts on Monday, and
seals the overall Elite Amateur
Cup.
“I missed every cut in the
series last year but made every
cut this year and to finish it off
with a win is incredible.”
He also has earned an
exemption into the PGA Tour’s
Bermuda Championship on
November 9-12, plus two Korn
Ferry events next season.
Feeling bloated
or have a sore stomach?
The Soothe Study is recruiting now.
We are looking for people with functional dyspepsia (indigestion) to
participate in a research study investigating the digestive health effects
of consuming mānuka honey.
Symptoms of functional dyspepsia include:
• pain or burning in the stomach, bloating, excessive belching (burping)
or nausea after meals
• an early feeling of fullness when eating
• pain in the stomach that may sometimes occur unrelated to meals or
may be relieved by eating.
After a two-week lead-in period, we will provide you with mānuka honey
or a honey-like product to eat before breakfast and dinner every day for
six-weeks. Two weeks later we will again ask you about your functional
dyspepsia symptoms.
The time commitment for this study will be about 10 hours and you will
attend six clinic visits in total. You will receive up to $220 in supermarket
vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs associated with
participating in this study (e.g., parking and/or travel costs).
If you experience symptoms of functional dyspepsia, and are aged
18 to 70 years we would love to hear from you.
GARDENING
Sth American native
adds gloss to winter
NATIVE TO temperate and
subtropical regions of South
America, Azara is a genus of 11
evergreen species.
They grow as shrubs or trees
between 1m and 8m tall.
The leaves appear in an unusual
pattern along the stems, which
is an interesting characteristic of
this genus.
Pairs of differently shaped
leaves are arranged alternately
along the stems though the
smaller leaf of the pair is not a
true leaf but a leaf-like stipule.
In late winter or early spring
an abundance of dainty yellow
flowers appears. The small
fragrant flowers have no petals
but rather display a conspicuous
bunch of long bright yellow
stamens
Probably the most well-known
of the Azara species is the sweetscented
“vanilla tree”, Azara
microphylla, native of Chile and
Argentina.
In early spring the scent of A.
microphylla fills the air with a
sweet enticing vanilla-like fragrance
emanating from its small
yellow flowers.
The name microphylla describes
this species’ small leaves.
Azaramicrophylla “Variegata”,
a yellow-variegated cultivar of
the vanilla tree, is also popular in
gardens, though less hardy than
the true species.
The lesser-known species in
this genus also provide interest
and charm to the garden.
Azara integrifolia, native to
Chile, has lush evergreen foliage,
Brought to you by
larger oval leaves and puts on a
stunning showy display of yellow
flowers in late winter.
Azara dentata and A. serrata
also show off their glossy green
leaves with toothed margins in
the South American borders to
good effect.
Alpine grass valued
by landscapers
NEW ZEALAND’S alpine
grasslands are dominated by
tussock grasses from the genus
Chionochloa.
Collectively known as ‘snow
tussocks’, the 23 indigenous
members of the genus range in
size and character.
At one end of the spectrum are
tall, stout species reminiscent
of toetoe. At the other end are
low-growing carpet formers.
Distributions range from local
to widespread. Leaves can be
dark green, reddish, golden
or silvery. Hybridism between
species is common.
Despite their hardiness and
longevity in the wild, many
species of snow tussock can be
difficult to grow and maintain
to their full potential. However,
there are a few ‘good doers’ that
are valued by landscapers and
gardeners.
Graceful Chionochloa rubra,
with slender, copper-coloured
leaves, reaches 1m to 1.6m
tall and suits being planted en
masse.
Chionochloa rigida, another
widespread South Island species,
is more straw coloured but can
be similarly stunning.
Mid-green Chionochloa
flavicans is more compact. It
www.arvida.co.nz
retains its attractive flowering
plumes for many weeks.
Chionochloa conspicua,
being rather large, makes a
magnificent feature plant. It can
handle a touch of shade and has
many delicate, feathery flower
heads in summer.
Other species deserve
to be used more widely, but
sadly are seldom stocked in
nurseries.
Snow tussocks tend to look
good in windy, exposed spots,
their flowing leaves adding
texture and dynamism to a
planting. With few exceptions,
they need plenty of light and
space, and will perform best in
decent, moist soil.
Get ready to brighten up your garden
EVEN AS winter intensifies, it’s
time to think ahead to spring
and summer.
In warmer districts, hardy
annuals can be sown where they
are to flower. As with all seeds,
the trick is to have the soil well
prepared before sowing. Once
seedlings appear, thin them out
to prevent overcrowding.
Hardy, prolific and reliable
flowers include alyssum,
calendula, coreopsis,
candytuft, cornflower, clarkia,
godetia, Californian poppy
(Eschscholtzia), larkspur, linaria,
linum, nightscented stock
(Matthiolabicornis), mignonette,
love in a mist (Nigella), pansy
and viscaria.
Nasturtiums flower all
summer in full sun or partial
shade.
They do well in poor soil but
are frost tender, so should not
be planted out until the danger
of frost has passed. Varieties
such as Black Velvet, Empress of
India, Peach Melba, Whirlybird
types and the semi-double
Salmon Baby are more compact
than older trailing types and do
not take off across the garden.
Perennials to raise from
seed from now until the end
of October include granny’s
bonnet (Aquilegia), dianthus,
dahlia, delphinium, gaillardia,
geum, gypsophila, hollyhock,
lupin, penstemon, polyanthus,
pyrethrum and viola.
These will all flower within 12
months and some will bloom in
their first season.
Start them in trays of seedraising
mix, then plant them
in the open garden when they
have made some growth. They
can be transplanted into their
permanent positions in autumn.
If you’ve been to an open home
recently, or been browsing the ‘for sale’
adverts, you might have noticed that
some sellers put together information
packs for potential buyers. These
sellers will know that researching a
property takes time and money, and
they don’t want this to be a barrier
to a successful sale. They believe that
providing information like a LIM (a Land
Information Memorandum from the
local council) and a building inspection
report can help busy people get an offer
on the table. This is great in theory, but
you need to tread carefully all the same.
If, for example, a real estate agent or
seller gives you a LIM for the property,
check carefully when it was prepared.
A LIM is a summary of all the current
property information held by the different
departments at a council at the time.
It contains details of council consents
for any work done, how much the rates
are and information on any geographic
hazards that might have an impact on
the property, such as subsidence. Bear
in mind that this information can be
reasonably general. If the LIM is dated a
couple of weeks ago, it’s safe to assume
it’s reasonably up to date. If it’s dated a
year ago, it’s a good idea to make further
enquiries. Getting a LIM costs money
in most areas (prices vary from council
to council). You can also ask to see the
property file held by the council, which
holds other information about a property,
like a site map and original house plans.
Building reports are a bit trickier.
throughout Using a building Christchurch
report provided by the
seller (or the real estate agent working
for them) may seem like an easy option
the property and then find problems
with it that cost a significant amount to
fix, you’re not protected by the building
report because the inspector’s contract is
with the seller, not you. The Real Estate
Authority (REA) recommends using
an accredited property inspector who
complies with the New Zealand building
inspection standard 4306:2005. Their
written report will identify any current
defects as well as highlight any urgent and
long-term maintenance required. Look
for someone who has a good level of
indemnity insurance, as this will protect
you if you buy the property and then find
you need to fix something that wasn’t in
the report. Building inspections do come
at a cost, but we think it’s worth it to be
sure that you’re fully aware of what you’re
signing up for.
If you end up with a report with a lot of
information about the property it doesn’t
mean you should walk away. Instead, see
it as giving you the opportunity to know
what you’re buying. Doing this before you
make an offer means you are fully aware of
Home & Property appears every Thursday, delivered FREE
what the property may need to have done
Attn: Sean Mooney
PO Box 13468
Email: sean.mooney@ghd.com
CRC224350 – to discharge contaminants from the passive discharge of
contaminants from contaminated land into land at 27 Washbournes Road,
Wigram, Christchurch, legally described as Lot 2 DP 40400.
The site has been used for galvanising metals since about 1980. Valmont
Coatings (NZ) Limited bought the operations in 2018, undertook site
investigations, including groundwater quality monitoring, and identified
the requirement to apply for resource consent for the passive discharge of
contaminants into land from historical metal treatment processes.
Contaminants identified in groundwater include zinc, arsenic, acidity, heat
and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulphionate), PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid)
and PFHxS (perfluorohexane sulphonic acid).
Valmont Coatings (NZ) Limited has proposed a suite of conditions
including ongoing groundwater quality monitoring and a mechanism to
undertake remediation if concentrations of contaminants in groundwater
increase
The applicant has requested a resource consent duration of 15 years.
