NELLA NGAHURU’S tenure
as a player in the Canterbury
Rugby League women’s
premiership spans more than 16
years – but she’s simultaneously
in the formative stages of
blazing a trail in the refereeing
ranks.
First pulling on the boots for
Addington Magpies, Ngahuru
represented Canterbury from
2007-09, moved to Wellington
and played for that province,
then had a stint in her
hometown of Rotorua, where
she coached junior rugby league
for two years.
Ngahuru, who lives in Hoon
Hay, turned out for Eastern
Eagles in 2020, was a try-scorer
in Woolston Rams’ grand final
loss to Sydenham Swans and
earned Canterbury selection
again in 2021, and rejoined the
Eagles last year.
But her rugby league journey
took another turn ahead of the
2023 season. She picked up the
whistle for the first time and
has quickly become a valued
member of the CRL refereeing
contingent, who are backed by
NZ MEP Fabrications.
“I met (referee and CRL
competitions and operations
manager) Jordan Chand. He
was trying to find refs and the
way he talked about it really
motivated me,” Ngahuru said.
“I went to training and Jordan
kept pushing me, to keep
coming, and I don’t think that
without all that encouragement
and support I’d still be there.
“Jordan, Kev (Ah-Ken), Jack
(Feavers), Liam (O’Brien) – now
I know all the guys and they all
support me and look after me,
so that’s why I love what I do
right now.”
Ngahuru has wholeheartedly
thrown herself into refereeing,
becoming a permanent fixture
on Monday and Wednesday
nights’ youth competitions, and
controlling the 18s girls series
between Linwood and Hornby
earlier in the season.
Although being a current
player precludes her from
refereeing women’s premiership
games for now, she has served
as a touch judge in that
competition and accelerated her
officiating education by running
the lines in the Massetti Cup.

Council
staff to
maintain
city’s
parks
IN-HOUSE teams of city council
staff will be created to maintain
Christchurch parks.
City councillors have decided
that from July 1 next year all
parks maintenance activity,
excluding tree maintenance
and sexton services (burials in
cemeteries) will be carried out by
council employed staff rather than
contractors.
The current contract for
maintenance services performed
by Recreational Services Ltd –
including mowing, sports fields,
gardening, rubbish collection
across councils 1000, plus
community parks – was due to
expire in June 2024.
A number of options were
considered including keeping
the current mixed model service
(using both contractors and
in-house), a modified in-house
delivery of services and full inhouse
delivery of services.
The decision was approved by
the city council’s finance and
performance committee. The
committee approved the full inhouse
delivery of services.

new in-house model will be an
extension of the way the Botanic
Gardens, Ngā Puna Wai, Hagley
Park, regional parks, our garden

on the Akaroa Harbour side of

maintained.
“The number of council staff in
each team will be determined by
the size and scale of the assets in
each ward and we’ll be working
through this over the next nine
months to make sure we’re ready
to hit the ground running
in 2024.”
Air Force, police beckon
for Blue Light awardees
TWO CATHOLIC Cathedral
College students are considering
careers in either the Air Force
or police after collecting two of
the top awards at Blue Light’s life
skills programme.
Mjade Tusa, 16, from Woolston
won the peers’ choice award.
“It means a lot to me to be
trusted and respected by my
peers. These were people that I
had grown to trust and respect,”
he said.

“I was very
humbled by the
decision the staff
made and it was a
great honour to be selected for
this award,” he said.
Both of them faced challenges
such as a high wire course,
mountain biking, along with
leaderless tasks, drills, teamwork
challenges, a bomb disarming
challenge and physical activities
through the programme that was
held at Burnham Military Camp.
Mjade said once they knew
each other they could meet their
challenges and obstacles.
“This enabled us all to pitch in
together and show our chemistry.
We did this towards the end (of
the camp) and it was an example
of how well we had gelled
together”.
Freddy said the toughest
challenge for him was working
with new people and getting
through the challenges.
“The bomb challenge was the
hardest for us as we did not have
group synergy yet. This was
tricky, but the challenge enabled
us to learn how to improve and
work as a team.”

how different being a player to
being a ref is. I’ve learnt more
about rugby league now than I
ever have.
“I’ve got a lot better – when
I first started I was all over the
place, a bit confused. But because
of the knowledge I’ve got now, I’m
more on point.”
While it’s early days in
Ngahuru’s refereeing career, she
harbours some lofty goals – but
hanging up the playing boots is
not on the cards anytime soon.
“My goal is to one day ref a New
Zealand game,” she said.
“My daughter has just made
New Zealand (age-group) this
year, so it inspires me to keep
doing what I’m doing, for her.
“I love rugby league so much
and I think I’ve got a few more
years in me to be backing down
from playing.”

Lester praised Ngahuru’s attitude
and commitment to building her
refereeing skill set.
“It’s awesome to see, Nella is
leading the way in the female
refereeing stakes in Canterbury.
“It was great having a female
referee role model for the 18s girls
games and there was some really
good feedback from the coaches
about her progression over the
three games,” he said.

Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
