Eastern eagle soars as referee
Nella tackles
new role
on the
league field
• By Will Evans
NELLA NGAHURU’S tenure
as a player in the Canterbury
Rugby League women’s
premiership spans more than 16
years – but she’s simultaneously
in the formative stages of
blazing a trail in the refereeing
ranks.
First pulling on the boots for
Addington Magpies, Ngahuru
represented Canterbury from
2007-09, moved to Wellington
and played for that province,
then had a stint in her
hometown of Rotorua, where
she coached junior rugby league
for two years.
Ngahuru returned to
Christchurch, turned out for
Eastern Eagles in 2020, was a
try-scorer in Woolston Rams’
grand final loss to Sydenham
Swans and earned Canterbury
selection again in 2021, and
rejoined the Eagles last year.
But her rugby league journey
took another turn ahead of the
2023 season. She picked up the
whistle for the first time and
has quickly become a valued
member of the CRL refereeing
contingent, who are backed by
NZ MEP Fabrications.
“I met (referee and CRL
competitions and operations
manager) Jordan Chand. He
was trying to find refs and the
way he talked about it really
motivated me,” Ngahuru said.
“I went to training and Jordan
kept pushing me, to keep
coming, and I don’t think that
without all that encouragement
and support I’d still be there.
“Jordan, Kev (Ah-Ken), Jack
(Feavers), Liam (O’Brien) – now
I know all the guys and they all
support me and look after me,
so that’s why I love what I do
right now.”
Ngahuru has wholeheartedly
thrown herself into refereeing,
becoming a permanent fixture
on Monday and Wednesday
nights’ youth competitions, and
controlling the 18s girls series
between Linwood and Hornby
earlier in the season.
Although being a current
player precludes her from
refereeing women’s premiership
games for now, she has served
as a touch judge in that
competition and accelerated her
officiating education by running
the lines in the Massetti Cup.
Council
staff to
maintain
city’s
parks
IN-HOUSE teams of city council
staff will be created to maintain
Christchurch parks.
City councillors have decided
that from July 1 next year all
parks maintenance activity,
excluding tree maintenance
and sexton services (burials in
cemeteries) will be carried out by
council employed staff rather than
contractors.
The current contract for
maintenance services performed
by Recreational Services Ltd –
including mowing, sports fields,
gardening, rubbish collection
across councils 1000, plus
community parks – was due to
expire in June 2024.
A number of options were
considered including keeping
the current mixed model service
(using both contractors and
in-house), a modified in-house
delivery of services and full inhouse
delivery of services.
The decision was approved by
the city council’s finance and
performance committee. The
committee approved the full inhouse
delivery of services.
“Parks, gardens and reserves
are so important to everyone
in Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula.
VIBRANT: Artwork by Geri Parawa (left), Daphne Rolston
(above) and Sharon White (below) will be on display at the
Sumner Art Society’s annual exhibition this weekend.
New venue for annual art exhibition
THE SUMNER Art Society is
holding its annual exhibition this
weekend.
Previously held at the Redcliffs
Bowling Club, it will be at the Mt
Pleasant Yacht Club this year for
the first time.
The clubrooms are where art
society members meet each
Wednesday morning to work on
their art, enjoy companionship
and share creative ideas.
Established in 1959, the art
society has about 45 members.
Well-known members who
will be exhibiting include Adrienne
Pavelka, who works with
watercolours; Maxine Burney,
who has a studio at The Arts
Centre and paints with acrylics;
and award-winning artist Geri
Parawa, whose medium is ink,
which she uses to create fluid,
vibrant artworks.
One of her Parawa’s works will
be raffled at the exhibition (the
other prize is a hamper).
Others who have been busy
preparing for the exhibition
are Sharon Soderberg-White,
who uses acrylic fluid pouring
to produce hand-embellished
works, and Suzanne Roberts,
who creates collages, often of
veteran cars. Gaye McElroy
works with oils on canvas, painting
figurative mannequins, while
Barry Mattingley paints detailed,
semi-impressionist landscapes
in acrylics. Pencils and pastels
are the favoured mediums Rose
Croft, who creates portraits using
pastels.
Exhibition organiser Kilmeny
Keyse paints in oils on canvas
and her subjects include
landscapes, while Rae Manson
prefers acrylics and her subjects
often have a musical theme or
are abstracts.
• The free exhibition is
open from 10am to 5pm
on Saturday and Sunday.
Art is available for purchase

New model
to care for
parks
• From page 1
“Parks, gardens and reserves
are so important to everyone
in Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula. They’re part of our
identity. By making this shift, our
parks will be getting top quality,
tailored maintenance,” committee
chair Cr Sam MacDonald said.
“The council was facing an
increase in operational costs
which would have had an impact
on rates so to get this moved inhouse
where we can be flexible,
have locally dedicated people
maintaining local parks and
avoid spending more ratepayer
money is a real win. Keeping costs
under control and staying within
existing operational budgets was a
big factor in the decision.”
Said city council head of
parks Andrew Rutledge: “The
new in-house model will be an
extension of the way the Botanic
Gardens, Ngā Puna Wai, Hagley
Park, regional parks, our garden
and heritage sites and parks
on the Akaroa Harbour side of
Banks Peninsula are currently
maintained.
“The number of council staff in
each team will be determined by
the size and scale of the assets in
each ward and we’ll be working
through this over the next nine
months to make sure we’re ready
to hit the ground running
in 2024.”
Air Force, police beckon
for Blue Light awardees
TWO CATHOLIC Cathedral
College students are considering
careers in either the Air Force
or police after collecting two of
the top awards at Blue Light’s life
skills programme.
Mjade Tusa, 16, from Woolston
won the peers’ choice award.
“It means a lot to me to be
trusted and respected by my
peers. These were people that I
had grown to trust and respect,”
he said.
Freddy Carter,
15, (left) from the
central city won the
overall excellence
award.
“I was very
humbled by the
decision the staff
made and it was a
great honour to be selected for
this award,” he said.
Both of them faced challenges
such as a high wire course,
mountain biking, along with
leaderless tasks, drills, teamwork
challenges, a bomb disarming
challenge and physical activities
through the programme that was
held at Burnham Military Camp.
Mjade said once they knew
each other they could meet their
challenges and obstacles.
“This enabled us all to pitch in
together and show our chemistry.
We did this towards the end (of
the camp) and it was an example
of how well we had gelled
together”.
Freddy said the toughest
challenge for him was working
with new people and getting
through the challenges.
“The bomb challenge was the
hardest for us as we did not have
group synergy yet. This was
tricky, but the challenge enabled
us to learn how to improve and
work as a team.”
Both of them agreed that
people should take part in the
programme as it gives them
another perspective on career
choices as well as a chance to
Blue Light South Island coordinator
Nicola Paterson who
was at the camp said Freddy won
the award due to his maturity.
“Freddy was awarded the
overall excellence award through
demonstrating the qualities of
maturity, respect, intuition and
through building individual and
group mana.
“Mjade was awarded the peers’
choice award through his efforts
to foster a team environment,
encouragement and respectful
communication with fellow team
members.”
Learning
curve
• From page 1
“I’ve learnt a lot, I didn’t realise
how different being a player to
being a ref is. I’ve learnt more
about rugby league now than I
ever have.
“I’ve got a lot better – when
I first started I was all over the
place, a bit confused. But because
of the knowledge I’ve got now, I’m
more on point.”
While it’s early days in
Ngahuru’s refereeing career, she
harbours some lofty goals – but
hanging up the playing boots is
not on the cards anytime soon.
“My goal is to one day ref a New
Zealand game,” she said.
“My daughter has just made
New Zealand (age-group) this
year, so it inspires me to keep
doing what I’m doing, for her.
“I love rugby league so much
and I think I’ve got a few more
years in me to be backing down
from playing.”
CRL director of football Jamie
Lester praised Ngahuru’s attitude
and commitment to building her
refereeing skill set.
“It’s awesome to see, Nella is
leading the way in the female
refereeing stakes in Canterbury.
“It was great having a female
referee role model for the 18s girls
games and there was some really
good feedback from the coaches
about her progression over the
three games,” he said.
Coastal Side
Celeste Donovan
‘Creating
predator free
backyards’
Coastal Ward city councillor Celeste Donovan writes about
the bid to make the east side predator free
THE PREDATOR Free movement
is gaining momentum in the eastern
suburbs.
It is driven by the recognition a Predator
Free Aotearoa must be firmly rooted
in and driven by local communities.
Many of them have taken on the challenge
of creating predator free backyards.
There is great recognition of the need
to co-exist with wildlife and even bring
some back into existing neighbourhoods
by returning, where possible, the original
fauna. One of the unsung revolutions is
happening in backyards – and this includes
our pristine coastal area. A movement
made up of an increasing numbers
of local groups with a common aim in
mind is to make their area predator free
by 2050.
The five baddies on the elimination
list are rats, stoats, ferrets, weasels, and
possums. Other groups, such as Pest
Free Banks Peninsula, also focus on the
elimination of wide range of pests which
threaten native biodiversity, including
goats, deer, hedgehog, rabbits, hares, and
rooting pigs.
As coastal councillor I have taken an
interest in this because the restoration
of our biodiversity is about comes with
many benefits for our community. We
can look forward to hearing our native
insects, bats, reptiles, and birds as they
return back to the forests, farmland,
towns, cities and coasts. Protecting our
environmental taonga is also good for
our local economy. An estimated 68,000
native birds are killed in New Zealand by
introduced pests every night, which costs
our economy and primary sector more
than $3.3 billion per year.
What has surprised me is the number
of volunteers already operating along our
coastline. For instance, the Styx Living
Laboratory Trust, a local river care group
that are focused on developing a ‘living
laboratory’ in Pūharakekenui (Styx)
River catchment and hosts a monthly
Predator Trap Library. In the coastal
area, there has been a flurry of activity
with predator control groups now
operating in Waimairi, New Brighton,
Spencerville and Southshore – spanning
the entire area.
A key factor in the success of these
groups is close collaboration with CCC
rangers, with local councils increasingly
taking the lead on predator free goals.
There is also a strong recognition that
restoring our natural environment will
have huge benefits for future generations,
as we face a warming climate.
The key for me though is every resident
can contribute by making their space
MISSION: Justin Fletcher (left) and
Craig Hawkyard with a Predator
Free NZ trap.
free of predators and that does not just
mean installing traps but also learning to
keep domestic cats and dogs away from
vulnerable animals like birds, seals, and
penguins.
There is education available with trapbuilding
days at schools and community
venues. The CCC rangers and volunteers
hosted a “Tinker Club” session on trap
building workshop at New Brighton
library, an event popular with families
able to participate in hands-on learning
experience for children.
Hayley Guglietta, chair of Richmond
Community Gardens situated on the
edge of the Ōtākaro (Avon) River and
red zone, is excited to see native wetlands
restored along the Ōtākaro green spine
in the coming decades. She says trapping
is an essential part of this process. “It’s
about creating a barrier between the precious
wetlands and the city,” she says.
Luke, the coordinator for Predator Free
New Brighton, is also enthusiastic about
the benefits of volunteering to improve
the biodiversity of his community. “Being
outside in natural surroundings keeps
me fit, and healthy. I also get a buzz from
sharing my passion for the environment,
and hearing native birdlife return to our
shores and estuary. There’s nothing quite
like knowing you are part of the future
vision for the city.”
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
ground moisture barrier needs.
ATTACK RISING DAMP
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
