Perfect partners highlight Pawgust 

PAWGUST: Dan Shepherd and his guide dog Ezra help 

raise awareness for Blind Low Vision NZ guide dogs.

DAN SHEPHERD would not be 

here today if it were not for his 

perfect match, Ezra, the guide 

dog who saved his life. 

Shepherd welcomed Ezra, a 

labrador retriever cross, into his 

family in October 2021. Within 

the first two weeks of having 

him, Ezra saved Shepherd’s life 

as a woman backed out of her 

driveway quite fast – and Ezra 

decided they were not going to 

walk any further and put on the 

brakes. 

“We stopped and suddenly her 

car was right in front of me. If I 

was still using my white cane, she 

would have killed me or at least 

pushed me onto the footpath. 

Ezra finds and gets what I need. I 

trust him.” 

Shepherd was diagnosed with 

Retinitis Pigmentosa when he 

was 15-years-old and reached out 

to Blind Low Vision NZ for help. 

“The condition has taken 

away my peripheral vision and I 

previously accessed the orientation 

and mobility service for my 

white cane use, and I was put 

on a waitlist for a guide dog,” he 

said. 

Shepherd said he waited 19 

years to reach out for help, as 

when he was diagnosed as a 

teenager it was a lot to process 

and it took him awhile to become 

comfortable and accept being 

identified with a disability. 

“It was a process for me to 

be happy being identified as a 

person with a disability. I have 

two boys, aged seven and four, 

and it was when the eldest was 

about two-and-a-half that he 

was becoming more mobile and 

wanted his dad to be active in his 

life. That was my motivation, to 

be a part of their lives.” 

Shepherd said working with 

Ezra is freeing as he can trust 

him to make the best decisions 

for both of them, unlike with the 

white cane he was using before 

where he had to process the information 

it was giving him and 

make decisions from that. 

“He is the perfect match. It is 

that feeling of freedom. For the 

first time I was able to walk at my 

own pace, I got matched with a 

dog who helps bring awareness. 

He has confidence in new places 

which in turn gives me confidence 

to do new things, that is a 

real important part for me.” 

Shepherd works at Blind Low 

Vision NZ as the head of access 

and awareness, and said there 

was a three-year wait before he 

was matched with Ezra as the 

matching process was quite 

intense. 

“My walking speed was 

tracked so Ezra is matched to 

my walking speed, I am a bigger 

guy so I needed a bigger dog who 

would be able to stop me from 

walking when necessary. 

“I also travel for work so Ezra 

is good in new places and likes 

meeting new people.” 

He said it takes about $100,000 

to train a guide dog, which is one 

of the main challenges. 

“It is why we need campaigns 

Pawgust to put dogs in the community. 

The dogs go through a 

19-week training programme 

before a final test which only two 

out of six dogs’ pass. This is why 

we need more funding to breed 

more dogs who will be successful.”

their pets walking or running 

during the month of August to 

help raise vital funds for Blind 

Low Vision NZ guide dogs.

Tamai Sports removing 

JOINING A LOCAL sports team 

or club can be a life-changing 

experience for children. It sets 

them up with healthy habits from 

a young age. 

But many are not getting 

that experience, with declining 

participation rates and barriers 

that prevent young people from 

engaging in sports. 

Tamai Sports is bucking that 

trend by improving access to 

sports alongside inclusive and 

culturally-centred opportunities. 

Using sport as the vehicle for 

participation, the unique not-forprofit 

organisation adopts Māori 

and Pasifika values to nurture 

cultural identity and diversity in 

its programmes, building trusted 

relationships with whānau and 

the community. 

Tamai supports tamariki 

aged 8-12 who are selected to 

participate from the Tamai 

learning cluster of seven schools: 

Te Waka Unua, Linwood Avenue, 

Whītau School, Tamariki, Te 

Aratai College, Ngutuawa School 

and Bromley.

born out of community need.

include transport, uniforms and

The programme is delivered 

on Tuesday afternoons, with 

children transported to Linfield 

Park where they are provided 

afternoon tea and take part in the 

cultural and hauora programme, 

delivered in partnership with He 

Waka Tapu. The programme’s 

focuses include waiata/kapa 

haka, cultural identity, wellbeing, 

goal planning, keeping 

your tinana well, healthy kai, 

mindfulness and mau rākau 

(Māori martial arts). 

Following these sessions, 

tamariki receive a 45-minute 

sports coaching session in either 

rugby, football, touch, cricket or 

netball and share nutritious kai. 

“Teams then compete in 

the relevant Saturday sports 

competitions against other 

clubs,” said Hamilton. 

“Our goal is to see tamariki 

transition into Linwood Rugby 

Club or Coastal Spirit Football 

Club following their three years 

with Tamai Sports. We work 

closely with clubs to strengthen 

the pathway for tamariki and 

their whānau.” 

A 2022 impact evaluation 

report from Ihi Research found 

Tamai has been able to effectively 

mitigate participation barriers 

in several ways, including; 

proactively addressing barriers 

to participation, providing 

excellent role models, utilising 

sport as a vehicle for modelling 

and teaching life skills, and 

responding to the cultures of 

tamariki and whānau who 

attend. The research was 

conducted through a kaupapa 

Māori lens. 

Ihi chief executive John 

Leonard said the response from 

whānau about the programme’s 

impact was overwhelmingly 

positive.

appreciation of the whānaucentred 

nature of Tamai Sports, 

noting they felt valued and 

included.” 

During the 2022 winter 

season, more than 50 per cent of 

participants in the programme 

identified as Māori or Pasifika, 

with that number in 2023 now 

close to 62 per cent. Participation 

of boys and girls is relatively 

even, with the number of girls 

slightly higher (51.1 per cent)

and the success of the programme has also 

allowed Tamai to grow its partnerships 

with other community organisations in 

the Tamai Learning Cluster. 

He Waka Tapu chief operating officer 

Tanith Petersen said their partnership 

with Tamai aims to provide young people 

with skills and experiences to set them up 

for the future. 

“He Waka Tapu is all about supporting 

tamariki through Tamai Sports, helping 

them embrace tikanga and nurture their 

cultural identity,” Petersern said. 

Looking ahead, Tamai is expanding its 

nutrition programme, providing healthy 

meals to 80 tamariki following their sports 

training for the 16-week programme. A 

cookbook for participating whānau is 

underway, and there are plans for a new 

‘teach tamariki to cook’ initiative, which 

will see them help chefs prepare their 

weekly meals.

PATELLA SURGERY 

Recently I have had the opportunity 

to learn a technique for patella 

luxation in dogs, under the guidance 

of Specialist Surgeon, Dr Helen Milner. 

Helen worked as a specialist surgeon 

at MMH a few years ago so we have a 

very good working relationship. Helen 

is now primarily working alongside 

veterinarians as a surgical coach so I 

thought it would be as good time for 

myself and a colleague to learn a new 

technique so we can offer our patients 

more when it comes to patella luxations. 

Essentially patella luxation is a 

dislocation of the kneecap either 

medially or laterally to the trochlear 

groove. Luxations can be medial or 

lateral. Medial patella luxation ( MPL) is 

relatively common in small breed dogs. 

Breeds most at risk of MPL are Poodles, 

Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Yorkies, 

Bichon Frise and Retrievers. The disease 

can be bilateral. It is considered an 

inherited, developmental disease, that 

starts early on in life. Some dogs with 

MPL will rupture their cranial cruciate 

ligament necessitating repair. MPL 

also predisposes dogs to developing 

degenerative joint disease. 

Charlie, a 3 year old Chihuahua was the 

patient I selected for the surgery. Charlie 

has a grade 2-3 patella luxation, meaning 

the patella mostly pops out medially 

with each stride, but can slide back into 

place. Charlie is difficult to assess awake 

as he’s not a fan of vets in general, not 

just me. We needed to perform sedation 

and radiographs to really evaluate 

the stifle and decide if he was a good 

candidate for surgery. He often lifts the 

left hindleg when standing or running, 

skips and double jumps on the left side. 

Most days the owners reported he lifted 

the left hind leg. Charlie is otherwise 

extremely healthy. 

Patella luxations are graded 1-4 based 

on the severity of disease. Once the 

animal is relaxed and sedated the patella 

can be manually assessed and graded. 

The anterior cruciate ligament can be 

palpated. Radiographs are important 

as we can see if there is pathology or 

osteoarthritis in any other joints, which 

may contribute to surgical success. 

Surgical correction was considered the 

right approach for Charlie based on his 

MPL grade and frequent lameness and 

daily pain exhibited. The main goal was 

to realign the stifle extensor apparatus 

and normalise forces acting on growth 

plates and joint surfaces. We wanted him 

to be able to run on all 4’s, without pain 

or lameness, enjoying his life to the full. 

A “Tibial Tuberosity Transposition” ( TTT) 

surgery was planned for Charlie to move 

the patella tendon over, realigning the 

quadriceps muscle through the centre of 

the trochlear groove. Helen is an expert 

here and you can observe from the X-ray 

attached, that a section of cranial tibia 

was sawn off and repositioned laterally 

with the help of pins and a figure of 8 

wire. After completion of this technique, 

the patella couldn’t be subluxated out 

of position. Some soft tissue suture 

patterns were also employed to help 

keep the patella in its correct position - 

the trochlear groove. 

A large padded bandage was placed 

on Charlies leg for 48 hours, to help 

provide stability, stop licking of the 

suture line and help with pain. He was 

discharged with excellent pain and anti 

inflammatory medications and exercise 

instructions. Activity is restricted for 

6-8 weeks following surgery, but physio 

and hydrotherapy can be started after 

the sutures are removed. Radiographs 

need to be repeated at the 8 week mark 

to make sure the osteotomy site has 

healed, then exercise can be adjusted 

accordingly. 

All in all it was a procedure that we 

want to be able to offer at McMaster & 

Heap vets. We have all the orthopaedic 

equipment and the perfect surgical 

coach to teach a couple of keen vets 

(one young and one a senior!) that want 

to learn a new technique that will benefit 

many of our patients in the future.

“A lot of people don’t realise 

that what falls on our streets and

straight into our rivers,” she said. 

“So if there’s anything in the

rubbish or paint brushes that 

get washed in the tap outside - 

they all just flow straight into 

our rivers. There’s no filter or

A clean up at the Ōpāwaho 

Heathcote River in May saw 

more than two tonnes of rubbish 

removed and taken to landfill, 

Moriarty said. 

“Over 300 dog poos they 

picked up, a barbecue, a 

Christmas tree - one of the shiny, 

sparkly plastic ones - road cones, 

plastics,” said Moriarty. 

The city council was also 

pulling a few electric scooters 

or bikes out of rivers every two 

weeks. 

“Everything you could 

imagine ends up there, along 

with our beautiful taonga 

species. Our eels, fish, our 

inanga that people love for their 

whitebait sandwiches - they’re all 

in there as well, competing with 

that rubbish,” she said. 

The problem was not unique 

to Canterbury either, with 

pollution of waterways occurring 

throughout the country. 

Everyone can help improve the 

water quality, Moriarty said. 

“If you’re out for a walk with 

your dog, just pick up the poo 

and put it in a bin. If you need 

to wash your car, bring it to a 

car wash or wash it over the 

grass, just not on your driveway 

because all those [soap] suds and 

dirt and everything just goes 

straight down into the stream. 

“It’s kind of like washing your 

dinner plates over your fish 

tank.” 

People could also ask their 

mechanic about fitting brake 

pads with low copper levels next 

time their car was in the shop or 

use a special paint to seal heavy 

metals into their roofs, so they 

didn’t run out with the rain, 

Moriarity said. 

If anyone saw something 

blocking or running into a storm 

water drain, they could use the

local authorities wherever they 

are in the country, she said.

Biggest BMW yet built for long distance 

Those who love large super 

‘size-me’ luxury European SUV’s 

will have their appetites satisfied 

with the updated X7, the biggest 

BMW on the planet, with an 

equally stupendous price. 

This time around if offers an 

expanded range of standard 

equipment and driver assistance 

features, plus some subtle 

styling changes, to help distract 

from the fact that this model 

has been around since 2019. 

For our market two models 

are available starting with the 

$177,990 xDrive40d twin turbo 

diesel provided for this road test. 

Ownership is well north of that 

figure, for the high performance 

flagship X7 M60i xDrive. Fitted 

with a barn storming ‘big 

beastie’ 4.4-litre twin turbo V8, it 

sports an equally beefy $224,900 

asking price. Both models attract 

the highest government clean 

car fee of $6,900, adding to the

owners. 

Styling changes are low-key 

and unlikely to be recognized 

by all except the most devout 

X7 aficionados. The front-end 

features a modest revamp 

including new matrix LED 

headlights offer non-dazzling 

high beam and a fog lights are 

automatically activated in bad 

weather and poor light. 

The test vehicle’s 3.0litre inline 

twin turbo diesel V6 is the 

first BMW sold here with 48-volt 

mild hybrid technology for 

improved imp fuel economy and 

lower emissions. The maximum 

output of the overall drive 

system is 259kW, and a healthy 

700Nm of torque, that increases 

to 720Nm when the mild hybrid 

system chips in. This latest 

modest form of electrification 

comprises a crankshaft-mounted 

starter generator integrated into 

the transmission and contributes 

an additional 9kW of power. 

The power train is supremely 

smooth with negligible road 

or engine noise in both town 

and open road driving. For its 

size and bulk it can shift itself 

in a hurry with a claimed 0 

to100 km/h sprint time of 5.6 

seconds. Where it really excels, 

is effortlessly scything through 

long distances like few other 

vehicles I’ve road tested. 

An eight-speed transmission 

with steering wheel mounted 

gearshift panels does a masterful 

job of channelling the motors 

considerable power and torque 

on to the road, via BMW’s 

proven xDrive all-wheel-drive 

system. 

The huge and lavishly 

appointed cabin can be enjoyed 

across three rows of seats. 

BMW’s Live Cockpit Plus in 

the new X7, is based on the 

company’s Operating System 

8 and integrates nearly into a 

Curved Display, formed by a 

large information and control 

displays. These days iDrive is 

geared towards touch operation 

and gesture control as well as 

voice activation. At times it 

seems overly complicated and 

technology for technology’s sake. 

BMW’s Connected Drive 

assistance system offers a 

Driving Assistant safety package 

comprising Lane Departure 

and Collision Warning Systems. 

One of the best new additions is 

Parking Assistant Professional 

that includes advanced Reversing 

Assistant that can now steer the 

vehicle for up to 200 metres. 

It’s ideal for taking the stress 

of backing out of long driveways 

you wished you had never 

ventured down in a vehicle of 

this size. It’s great watching 

the expressions of onlookers 

anticipating a backing disaster, 

when you make the job look so 

easy, and they are unaware it was 

all technological slight of hand, 

not my sublime reversing skills. 

The adaptive two-axle air 

suspension is standard with 

electronically controlled 

dampers to deliver superior 

comfort on long journeys. 

All chassis systems have been 

retuned for this take on the 

X7, raising the already lofty 

bar the previous model set for 

handling and driving comfort. 

It’s supported on this front by an 

expanded selection of automated 

driving systems. The test vehicle 

even with it’s additional height 

and weight is remarkably nimble 

– pleasant but not unexpected, 

after all it’s a BMW. Limited 

ground clearance rules out 

tackling genuinely demanding 

cross-country terrain. A lowslung 

front end is a likely target 

for protrusions such as rocks and 

tree stumps. However, this isn’t 

the sort of place an X7 owner 

is ever going to nose their king 

SUV pride and joy into.
