ONLY SIX district councillors voted 

when a big decision on the future of 

Selwyn was signed off. 

And it can now also be revealed 

some district councillors did not know 

voting on the District Plan would 

scuttle an appeal against a huge subdivision. 

District councillors went behind 

closed doors two weeks ago to discuss 

and vote on approving the District Plan 

to meet the August 20 Government 

deadline for new urban density rules. 

The district council could have asked 

for an extension like the Christchurch 

City Council has to allow more time for 

discussion, but chose not to. 

There was no required date for the 

District Plan to be signed off, but the 

district council wanted it to be done 

at the same time as the urban density 

zoning rules were. 

As a result of the councillors’ 

decision, the appeal on the contentious 

1710-home Lincoln South subdivision 

(above) to the Environment Court is 

now null and void.

Vehicle dashcam captures near 

head-on collision along SH73

A DASHCAM caught the 

shocking moment a Toyota ute 

nearly collided head-on with 

an oncoming car on State 

Highway 73. 

Simon, who didn’t want his 

surname published, was travelling 

down a steep stretch of the 

two-lane road earlier this month 

with his wife, dog and baby in 

the back seat when he spotted 

the ute overtaking him. 

“Oh s***,” his wife is heard 

exclaiming as the ute continues 

to barrel down the right lane into 

a blind bend. 

Seconds later, the ute pulls 

back into the correct left-hand 

lane to narrowly avoid slamming 

into an oncoming car with a 

trailer. 

The wife gasped at the exchange 

before the offending driver 

again pulls out into oncoming 

traffic to avoid the congestion. 

“No, no, no, get a photo of (the 

car’s number plate),” Simon was 

heard saying on camera. 

The video shows the ute pass 

on a blind corner and continue 

down the road’s right lane. 

Simon said he predicted the 

possible disaster the moment

he saw the ute pass him during 

the dangerous overtaking 

manoeuvre. 

“I already knew there was an 

oncoming car as I saw it go up 

the road from the left, but (the 

ute) didn’t because he was on a 

blind bend,” he said. 

Simon put the ute driver’s 

actions down to impatience – 

he noted his car was part of a 

convoy following a campervan 

travelling no more than 50km/h. 

“But downhill, on a slope and a 

windy day – you don’t want to be 

travelling any quicker than that 

anyway.” 

The footage has been handed 

to police for review. Last week 

police said the case was in the 

initial phase of assessment.

Transport Agency states online 

for drivers to safely pass another 

vehicle, they must be “extremely 

careful”. 

“You must have a clear view of 

the road ahead, to make sure you 

can finish passing safely,” it says 

on its website. 

Road safety campaigner Clive 

Matthew-Wilson said he was 

horrified by the footage. 

“That ute was a blink away 

from a fatal collision,” he said. 

“That driver was not only 

incredibly reckless, but (they) 

risked the lives of innocent 

motorists travelling in the 

opposite direction. 

“There are lots of idiots on 

our roads, but ute owners are 

often the worst offenders when 

it comes to driving their vehicles 

like a battering ram.” 

Matthew-Wilson added that 

median barriers are the best 

protection against head-on 

collisions, but median barriers 

are not always practical on 

narrow, winding roads. 

“The police have the power 

to seize vehicles being driven 

recklessly. I hope they seize 

this vehicle and prosecute the 

driver.” 

As for Simon, his message 

to the public – including the 

driver – is one of echoing the 

importance of taking care 

behind the wheel. 

“Just keep left, don’t take 

chances,” he said. 

“Our road toll is high enough 

as it is, don’t add to it – just don’t 

take the chance.”

‘SEVERE DAMAGE’ TO 

RESTAURANT FROM FIRE 

The Black Door Bar & Eatery in 

Lincoln will be closed for “some 

time” after a fire caused severe 

damage to the restaurant over 

the weekend. The blaze was 

reported in the early hours of 

Saturday morning and attended 

by Lincoln Volunteer Fire 

Brigade. The exact cause is yet 

to be determined but the fire did 

start in the kitchen. 

ARREST AFTER BURGLARY 

Police have been quick to make 

an arrest after a couple’s home 

was burgled and car stolen 

in Faringdon last Saturday. 

Included in the stolen items 

were tools, clothes, electronics, 

jewellery, dirty washing, and 

shoes. “Anything they could 

fit in the car,” they said. Also 

stolen was a box of important 

documents, which included 

photo albums. As a result a 

37-year-old woman was due to 

appear in Christchurch District 

Court yesterday. Police have not 

ruled out further arrests. 

TYRE SLASHER CAUGHT 

A 15-year-old has been 

arrested in relation to charges 

of intentional damage after a 

number of vehicles had their 

tyres slashed in the Farringdon 

area. The teenager will appear 

in the Christchurch Youth 

Court.

voted on this after taking legal 

advice. 

“I took legal advice that 

basically said at this stage in the 

process where individual panels 

had heard all the topics over the 

District Plan and the reports had 

been put through and anytime 

we could have been accused of 

any bias had passed,” he said. 

Hasson said she had upheld 

her perceived conflict of interest 

as a matter of principle, as she 

had done it through the whole 

District Plan process because 

she had been involved in panel 

hearings as an independent commissioner. 

Reid did not respond to the 

Selwyn Times. 

Carrick said Lyall should have 

left the room for the decision, 

which would have meant there 

would have no longer been a 

quorum for the vote. 

McInnes regrets not knowing 

the impacts on the appeal before 

it was too late. 

McInnes said when it was 

decided what was going to be in 

the District Plan she thought the 

appeal would be able to continue. 

Bob Mugford thought the same. 

“When we went through 

deciding how the variation one 

and independent hearings panel 

would be constructed and would 

be included, we did not expect 

the way that happened to make it 

very difficult for that appeal to go 

forward. 

“We made that decision expecting 

they would still be able 

to appeal and found out later 

that wasn’t the case, and that was 

never intended,” said McInnes.

Selwyn Times were surprised 

by the process and that district 

councillors weren’t aware of what 

would happen to appeals. 

“You’ve got to be joking,” said 

one. “Unbelieveable,” said another, 

“Isn’t it their job to know 

these rules?”. 

The only appeal avenue for 

Lincoln Voice now appears to be 

through the high court, which 

Carrick said would be risky and 

costly. 

Broughton knew the appeal 

would be affected but did not 

expect every councillor to know. 

“The whole process has been 

about a seven-year process with 

two election cycles which has 

meant there has been a number 

of new elected members come in 

at different parts of the process, 

so I don’t think to have every 

councillor aware of what the 

decisions would mean for every 

piece of land in the district is 

reasonable to expect.”

Sports trust bottles up memories 

FOR TEN years the Selwyn 

Sports Trust has been making 

memories in the community. 

Now it’s bottling them up to tell 

their story. 

The charitable trust was 

set up in 2013 to encourage 

participation in active recreation 

in the district through 

programmes and events for all 

ages. 

“The idea of sharing our stories 

has been bubbling away for a 

long time, so we have made the 

decision to bottle them, put a 

lid on the top, a message on the 

side and see if we can get some 

needed support from the Selwyn 

business community,” general 

manager Doug McSweeney said. 

Until now the trust has 

operated solely from grants and 

fundraising. 

With just 3 per cent of its 

annual funding coming from the 

Tū Manawa (Sport New Zealand) 

annual fund, it is reliant on other 

funding sources like sponsors, 

foundations and gaming charities 

and a strategic partnership with 

the district council. 

Now it is aiming to become 

more commercial and find 

more local businesses to 

partner with so it can rely less 

on grants. McSweeney said the 

bottle campaign will be used as 

conversation starters to tell some 

of the trust’s stories. 

The very first ‘flavour’ off the 

production line is called ‘Young 

wāhine learns to ride a bike’. 

Said McSweeney, “A mum 

rings the local school leading up 

to an iBike session (the trust’s 

bike education programme), 

really nervous about her 

daughter participating as she 

can’t ride a bike. They have been 

trying to teach her for a few years 

now, but with very little luck. 

“The dad came along and 

watched the session from afar to 

make sure she was okay. 

“The young girl is nervous at 

first but by the end of the 

session is taught how to ride her 

bike, becoming a confident rider. 

“Dad has tears in his eyes, as 

he is so happy she is now able to

and is now focusing on setting up 

a relationship with high schools. 

“The new rangatahi strategy 

is an important gap identified 

in the community, and the 

Selwyn Sports Trust is seeking 

commercial support and 

sponsorship to enable the trust to 

be able to deliver the strategy 

in 2024 and beyond,” McSweeney 

said. 

Along with the programmes 

it delivers, it also runs three 

major events each year; the 

Koru Games, Lake Crichton 

Multisport Series, and the 

Selwyn Stampede Running & 

Walking Festival. 

“These events are designed 

to allow the whole community 

to participate, so entry fees are 

set low and they are all run as a 

break-even event, not a money 

making event, which is what the 

trust is all about.”

High-flying work at bike park 


AFTER MONTHS of hard 

work, three Lincoln youths can 

finally show off their efforts.

Williams and Josh McCarthy 

been upgrading the Lincoln 

bike park at the end of Meijer 

Dr including building a big new 

jump. 

Their work has become a 

popular addition to the park 

with a decent group hanging out 

at the park after school and on 

the weekends. 

The park has been there for 

about three years, but it wasn’t 

until recently that people have 

taken an interest in it. 

The district council owns the 

land, and has let the trio build 

up the park. 

Fergus and his mates have 

spent a lot of time with shovels 

building and shaping the ramps. 

“We spent hundreds of hours 

digging and it’s probably been 

four or five months trying to 

organise it all and get it all 

set up.” 

Fergus said local residents 

and companies helped by 

donating materials and money 

to build the park up. Included

in their fundraising was selling 

homemade baking. 

Erik said he has been using 

the park for about three years 

and slowly crafting the jumps 

after the district council helped 

build the original mounds. 

Erik said the hardest was 

organising the people and the 

digging. 

Erik is one of the few people 

who use the park who can do 

a backflip and competes in 

mountain biking events around 

Canterbury. 

He said while the big jump 

is the main attraction for the 

park, there is a range of different 

challenges. 

“There’s some smaller jumps 

that we’ve built so there’s 

different levels of riders.”

for an extension of Meijer Dr as 

part of a district council plan 

to build a new sports facility

bike park is planned to happen 

during September.

Thieves steal community’s coal cart 

A BLOCK of shops on Springs Rd, 

Prebbleton, is getting a new lease 

of life. 

The building is owned by 

Prebbleton resident Tony Lee. 

Lee said the work is to replace 

the ageing roof, which is about 20 

years old, and has some leaks in it. 

“We’re putting a new roof on 

and really upgrading the shops,” 

Lee said. 

“It is 20 years since the roof was 

replaced and it’s had quite a few 

penetrations many which have 

been patched.” 

Lee said with all the development 

in the area he thought it was 

time they had a tidy up. 

Work is expected to be finished 

within the next two to three 

weeks.

to the rail. 

“It’s a fairly heavy object,” 

Chambers said. 

The replica cart was built by 

members of the community 

from original parts about 10 

years ago. One of 

the people involved 

in its construction 

was Malvern Ward 

district councillor 

Bob Mugford. 

“It really upsets me. Bob 

I couldn’t believe it Mugford 

when I was told.” 

Mugford said this isn’t the 

first time the cart has been 

targeted. 

“It had only been there a week 

when someone pushed it down 

a bank.” 

The settlement became well 

known for its coal and sand 

mines in the 1870s. 

Chambers said he reported 

the theft to police. 

Chambers is still holding out 

hope that someone has seen it 

and it is returned. 

“We’re just waiting to see if 

it turns up at some stage. It’s 

quite annoying because we are 

a township that doesn’t seem to 

get a lot of crime at all.” 

Chambers said they are 

now looking at doing more 

fundraising to install CCTV 

cameras in Glentunnel.

Keeping the community active 

The Selwyn Sport Trust 

has been operating 

for a decade. Reporter 

Daniel Alvey looks at 

who is behind it and 

what its plans are 

THE TRUST started in 2013 

using leftover funds from the 

first Selwyn Running Festival, 

now called the Selwyn Stampede 

Running and Walking Festival. 

To get it going there were four 

trustees Mike Molloy, Emma 

Wilson, Mike Lay and the late 

John F. Reid. Wilson remains a 

trustee today. 

At the helm is general manager 

Doug McSweeney who joined 

the trust in November with 25 

years of experience in the sports 

space.

and the Crusaders.

“The vision for the trust when 

it was first set up was to get the 

whole community active. 

“I think the strategy since 

then has been refined and now 

there’s a clear focus and strategy 

on what the trust delivers,” 

McSweeney said. 

The trust has developed a 

strong number of programmes 

that it delivers in primary 

schools across the district. 

One of those is the Activator 

programme which is delivered 

in 26 schools and reaches more 

than 6,600 pupils in over 1000 

sessions. McSweeney said the 

programme is designed to get 

the trust staff out and about and 

in the schools giving them the 

direct support they need.

programme, the trust also 

delivers a range of specialised 

programmes including the iBike 

programme, which focuses on 

teaching primary school-aged

children how to ride bikes. A 

new pilot programme, Her 

Rules, focuses on getting more 

female participation in sports. 

“Where it’s got to now and 

where it’s heading is really clear 

on strategy, we essentially deliver 

programmes and events. Most 

of our focus in recent times has 

been on primary schools.” 

The next step for the trust is 

the high school age bracket with 

a new rangatahi (youth) strategy 

being introduced across the 

district’s four high schools next 

year. 

McSweeney said the strategy 

will focus on building a pathway. 

“We are working with all these 

young people in primary schools, 

and when you put the secondary 

school age group into the mix 

then your pathway forms a 

really clear opportunity for these 

young people to be active. 

“If we can build a pathway 

for young people to be active, 

to enjoy play, to get the 

fundamentals of movement 

and then ultimately connect 

into traditional sport and nontraditional 

sport then you might 

be able to create a lifelong love of 

physical activity.

through a number of revenue 

streams including a strategic 

partnership with the district

council, private sponsorship, and 

community grants. 

“If you ask anyone working in 

sport they would say it’s a very 

challenging environment to 

generate revenue,” McSweeney 

said. 

Going forward the trust is 

looking to secure a more stable 

level of funding. 

“We are trying to build a 

commercial model which is based 

more around commercial support 

rather than trying to apply for 

grants and funding.” 

Along with funding the trust 

is also looking to address some 

of the challenges faced in the 

district. 

“There is definitely some rural 

isolation with some of those 

schools which maybe aren’t in 

the larger towns, so I guess for 

us what we try and do is connect 

with those schools and their local 

community to support them.” 

The trust achieves this through 

their activators in schools, also 

hosting cluster events where they 

bring school groups together in 

place, which McSweeney said 

leaves lasting connections. 

McSweeney said a big focus is 

to create a level playing field for 

everyone to be active. 

“We ran a cluster event 

recently where we played sitdown 

volleyball, wheelchair 

basketball, and blind football. 

It’s not specifically designed for 

those special needs, it’s designed

for everyone. 

“I remember a great story from 

that event where I was talking 

to one of the teachers and (the 

children) were playing sit-down 

volleyball. I said ‘How’s it going?’ 

and she said, ‘See that young 

girl there, she doesn’t engage or 

participate in sport, but she hit 

the ball back over the net, one 

of the sporty kids said ‘awesome 

work’ and you should have seen 

the smile on her face’. 

“So I think for us, the more 

we can design to create those 

moments, we are making change 

for life.” 

The trust also runs 

programmes for adults, such 

as the four Road Runners & 

Walkers groups, and is looking 

at running a pilot e-bike training 

program for ages 65 plus. 

“It creates an opportunity for 

grandparents to bike to school 

with their grandkids, so that 

might be an event or day. For us, 

that’s connecting young people 

with different role models,” 

McSweeney said. 

The programmes for all ages 

are designed to get people active 

which culminates in them 

participating in larger events like 

the Lake Crichton Multisport 

Series or Koru Games, which 

then feed back into the 

programmes. 

The trust’s next major event 

is the Selwyn Stampede on 

November 12.

Reverse Mortgages are a tool, offered by 

select financial providers, for seniors in 

New Zealand seeking to unlock some of 

the equity in their existing homes. Whilst a 

reverse mortgage offers certain benefits, 

they also come with risks that warrant 

careful consideration before signing on 

the dotted line and committing to such an 

arrangement. 

We regularly assist with a wide variety of 

financing arrangements and summarise a 

few of the benefits and risks associated with 

a Reverse Mortgage as follows: 

Benefits 

1. Supplemental Income: Reverse Mortgages 

provide a means for seniors to access the 

equity locked up in their existing homes, 

offering what can be a lump sum payment, 

or access to the equivalent of an overdraft 

facility, to support the borrowers retirement 

needs and lifestyle. 

2. Homeownership Retention: Borrowers 

can continue to live in their homes without 

the obligation of needing to make regular 

loan repayments, thus maintaining their 

sense of independence and stability. We 

often see clients using the Reverse Mortgage 

funds for necessary home maintenance and 

repairs which allows them to continue living 

comfortably and safely at home. 

3. Flexibility: Funds from a Reverse Mortgage 

can be used for various purposes, including 

covering medical expenses, to purchase 

or maintain a vehicle, home renovations, 

holiday or debt consolidation. 

Risks 

1. Accruing Interest: Unlike traditional 

mortgages, the interest on a Reverse 

Mortgage compounds over time. This can 

lead to a significant debt that erodes the 

equity in the property. 

2. Reduced Inheritance: The loan balance, 

together with accrued interest, must 

be repaid when the borrower dies or 

the property is sold. This will reduce 

the inheritance left for the borrower’s 

beneficiaries. 

3. Eligibility Criteria: Reverse Mortgages 

are generally only available to seniors, and 

specific eligibility requirements must be met 

– meaning access can be limited. 

4. Long Term Commitment: Borrowers are 

committed to the Reverse Mortgage for an 

extended period, which may not align with 

their evolving financial needs or lifestyle 

choices. 

There is no such thing as free money! 

Prospective Reverse Mortgage borrowers 

are required to consult with legal advisers 

before proceeding. We work with our clients 

to ensure careful evaluation of the benefits 

and risks, and what other options may be 

available, to determine whether the Reverse 

Mortgage aligns with the borrower’s longterm 

financial requirements.

Visit marks Rewi Alley’s legacy 

CHINA’S MINISTER of 

Education Huai Jinpeng has 

visited Springfield, the birth 

place of Rewi Alley. 

He was welcomed by Mayor 

Sam Broughton, Springfield 

Community Association chair 

Graeme Dawson and students 

from Springfield School on 

August 19. 

Also present for the ceremony 

were members of the Selwyn 

sister city committee, the 

Malvern Community Board, the 

Christchurch China Friendship 

Society and the Alley family, 

as well as Christchurch City 

Council staff, Springfield 

residents, and 10 principals who 

will travel to China to explore 

Alley’s legacy. 

Three students from 

Springfield School assisted the 

minister and the mayor to plant a 

kowhai tree at the school. 

China’s Consul General in 

Christchurch He Ying and her 

staff enabled the minister’s 

visit. 

Twenty-six years ago, the 

people of Springfield responded 

to Professor Bill Wilmott’s call to 

celebrate Alley in his birth town. 

Lu Bao, the wife of one of 

Alley’s Chinese foster sons, spent 

months living with local families 

while she created a sculpture 

of Alley in the Faulkner’s 

woolshed.

Well, there is so much empty space near 

farm sources that you could put a good 

parking bay there. As for effluent dripping 

out of trucks that is just part of the beast, 

if the trucks cannot park up and go to the 

motel or hotel then that’s money for the 

locals we are losing out on. Come on this 

is not right, all that truck drivers want to 

do is park up and have a good feed. They 

will be out of hours as well.

only a matter of time before a child runs 

out behind a truck and is not seen by vehicles 

nipping down Clinton St on the way 

home from the pub. 

It’s not nice eating your meal with the

In the case of fire or ambulance there is 

an issue if the street has up to eight trucks 

parked in the residential street. 

We all respect (the truck drivers) are 

a valuable workforce and need a place 

to sleep but the trucks don’t belong in 

residential streets in front of a children’s 

park.

in the industrial area.

community garden. The park is for

Slower speeds 

save lives 

Selwyn District Council 

SPEED ISN’T always the cause 

of a crash, but it is one of the 

primary reasons people are dying 

on our roads. 

Over the last five years, 100 

per cent of all fatalities in Selwyn 

occurred on roads with speed 

limits over 70km/h. This doesn’t 

mean these crashes were caused 

by exceeding the speed limit, it 

means in many cases the speed at 

the point of impact was too great 

for the occupants to survive the 

crash. 

Ask yourself, if someone runs 

a stop sign in front of you, what 

speed would you prefer to crash 

into them? If someone crosses the 

centreline in front of you, what 

speed would you prefer to drive 

head on into them? While speed 

wasn’t the cause, it will determine 

whether you will live or survive 

with injuries after a crash. 

A child does something 

unexpected and you have to 

brake suddenly; what speed 

would you prefer to be travelling? 

As your chosen speed increases, 

your reaction time decreases, 

your stopping distance increases, 

and your speed at impact will 

determine if the child lives or 

dies. 

Human nature is to make 

mistakes, but these mistakes 

shouldn’t cost us our lives. 

There is significant research 

that indicates what speeds should 

be travelled for the best chance 

of survival when a crash occurs, 

and they aren’t the speeds we are 

currently travelling. 

The speeds featured in the 

following diagram have a 90 per 

cent survival rate. Increase the 

speed and the chance of survival 

decreases significantly. 

SLOWING DOWN: Making a conscious effort to reduce your speed slightly could result in 

avoiding a crash entirely.

surviving if the crash occurs. 

There has been a lot of media 

attention around the road to zero 

and the reduction of speed limits. 

Selwyn is not immune to this. 

The district council is legally 

required to submit a plan to 

Waka Kotahi New Zealand 

Transport Agency outlining how 

we intend to reduce our speed 

limits, and therefore save lives. 

The Selwyn District’s Speed 

Management Plan will be out for 

public consultation in October, 

and we encourage everyone to 

review it and provide feedback. 

Most drivers are critical of 

others and think it’s everyone 

else’s behaviour on the roads 

that’s the issue. It’s time for us 

all to examine our own driving 

habits and behaviours. 

We can reduce speed limits, 

enforce, and educate, but you are

McMeeken re-signs with Phoenix 

FORMER LINCOLN High 

School student Zoe McMeeken 

has recommitted to the 

Wellington Phoenix, signing on 

with the club through until the 

end of the 2024-25 A-League 

season. 

The 19-year-old fullback will 

be one of four scholarship players 

for the upcoming season, before 

returning to a full-time contract 

next year. 

McMeeken started all but one 

of the team’s matches in their 

inaugural campaign, but was 

limited to seven appearances last 

season. 

McMeeken opted to remain in 

Wellington to play for the club’s 

reserve side at the end of the 

2022-23 season after discussions 

with head coach Paul Temple and 

assistant coach Callum Holmes. 

“I talked to Paul after the last 

game of the season and he was 

super happy to have me at the 

academy,” McMeeken said. 

“Callum also pushed me to go 

to there because he knew I needed 

game time. 

“It was a tough decision to make 

because I knew other girls were 

going overseas and I didn’t know 

anyone who was coming back to 

the academy. 

“Some people would consider 

it a downgrade, but I knew that it 

was the best for me. 

“The last few months at the 

academy have been so great, just 

getting game time, getting on the 

ball and getting some confidence 

back.” 

McMeeken captained New 

Zealand OF the OFC under-19 

championship in Fiji in June and 

told the Selwyn Times earlier this 

year that she hoped to make the 

team for next year’s under-20 

FIFA World Cup in Colombia. 

The Lincoln native has 

primarily played at left back for 

the Phoenix reserves and been 

given a bit more attacking license. 

“The more positions you can 

play the more helpful you can be 

to the team,” she added. 

Paul Temple enjoyed getting to 

know McMeeken at the academy 

before he moved into his head 

coaching role. 

“Getting to watch her play every 

week has been really beneficial for 

me,” he said. 

“What we’ve seen working with 

her closely is she’s a crazy-good 

athlete and a really powerful 

runner with the ball. 

“We’ve given her a little bit of 

attacking freedom as a fullback 

and she’s really embraced that and 

has played with a smile on her 

face.” 

McMeeken is the third 

specialist fullback in the squad 

for the 2023-24 season, alongside 

Football Fern Michaela Foster and 

American Hailey Davidson. 

Temple expects McMeeken will 

“provide really good competition 

for places” this season, but also 

sees her “as a key part of our 

future”. 

“We want to work with her on 

becoming the best professional 

footballer she can be,” he said. 

“The conversation with Zoe 

has been about not just what’s 

happening right now, but more 

about her pathway and how that’s 

going to go over the next few 

years. 

“She’s a great personality and 

is a really lovely character. She’s 

got a great worth ethic, is humble 

and her mental toughness is also a 

strength.” 

McMeeken is the 16 th player 

confirmed in the team’s squad for 

the 2023-24 A-League. 

The Wellington Phoenix start 

their season with a home match at 

Sky Stadium against Melbourne 

Victory on October 15. 

Another Lincoln-raised 

professional Lily Alfeld is still out 

injured and hasn’t been resigned 

for the Phoenix. The goalkeeper 

had played for Perth Glory in 

the A-League before taking up a 

contract with the Nix in 2021.

motivation for Ellesmere to win 

the annual Southbridge Shield 

clash against North Canterbury 

on Saturday with the Tane 

Norton Trophy also on the line 

for the first time. 

Ellesmere have already 

clinched two solid wins so far 

this season, but head coach Dave 

Kettles said the focus has always 

been on the match against rivals 

North Canterbury. 

“There’s no illusions around 

North Canterbury, they’re a 

really good unit,” he said. 

“The guys have worked 

really hard but we know North 

Canterbury have a powerful 

forward pack which we will need 

to shut down.” 

This year will be the 100th 

time the Southbridge Shield 

is contested between the two 

sides. The match at Rangiora 

Showgrounds Oval kicks off at 

12.05pm. 

North Canterbury currently 

hold the silverware after a 13-0 

win last year.

for the first time, as well as the 

shield, is an extra incentive. 

“It’s a great opportunity, we’ve 

just got to enjoy the occasion,” 

he said. 

“I know the boys are really 

excited to be the curtain raiser 

for Canterbury as well.” 

With Saturday’s game the last 

fixture of a short season, Kettles 

said enjoyment has been a focus. 

“From the get-go, we’ve been 

working on the culture and 

enjoyment factor,” he said. 

“After Covid, rep footy lost 

a bit of enjoyment so we’ve 

been focused on bringing the 

enjoyment back into it.” 

After taking a break from 

coaching at Prebbleton this year, 

Kettles said he is relishing being 

back in the rugby environment. 

“This year I wasn’t going to 

coach at all, but the position was 

available and I had a few players 

ask me to apply. 

“It’s been really good this 

year, I’ve got some excellent cocoaches 

and we’ve had former 

players come in and help - so it’s 

been a collective effort.”

Back-to-back titles for Burnham 


FOR BURNHAM, it’s been a 

steady rise to the top of premier 

netball. 

After making and winning 

their first final last year, Burnham 

A were able to clinch backto-back 

titles with a nail-biting 

40-39 win over Lincoln A last 

Thursday. 

While Lincoln made their 

seventh premier final appearance 

since 1999, it was only Burnham’s 

second. 

Led by coach Denise Keno 

again this year, Burnham have 

been the pace-setter of the competition 

for the last two seasons. 

The team has lost just four 

matches in two years, and only 

one this season. 

As a result, Lincoln went into 

the final the clear underdogs. 

However, the red-and-blacks 

refused to let Burnham run 

away with a large lead in the first 

quarter. 

Burnham brought the ball 

through court cleanly throughout 

the first 12 minutes, but the 

Lincoln defensive duo of Isla Mc- 

Killop and Lucinda Hutchinson 

were able to pressure Burnham’s 

shooters when it mattered. 

Liv Clark was impressive at 

goal shoot for Burnham, pulling 

in the majority of rebounds in 

the goal circle.

style on attack – which ultimately 

cost them the game. 

With Burnham leading 40-39 

with one minute remaining, 

Lincoln chose to play the ball 

around for almost 45 seconds 

instead of sending it into the 

shooting circle, in a bid to send 

the game into extra time. 

Timely deflections by Burnham 

defenders forced Lincoln to have 

a throw in with less than five 

seconds remaining, which Lincoln 

was unable to convert in time. 

Burnham’s 40-39 win ended a 

near-perfect season for the side, 

who lost their only match of the 

year to Greenpark A by one goal 

last month. 

Meanwhile, last year’s beaten 

finalists Greenpark A were able 

to prevail against their B team in 

the third-place playoff, winning 

52-45.

help give students a head start with their fees next year. 

The scholarships are awarded to year 12 or 13 students from Darfield High 

School, Ellesmere College, Lincoln High School or Rolleston College. 

Spring into a range of Selwyn 

activities and events this season 

Selwyn locals will have a chance to make their own henna art, skate around at a 

roller disco, and improve their Te Reo Māori skills, thanks to a variety of exciting 

events and workshops happening in the district this spring. 

The district’s latest ‘What’s on in Selwyn’ brochure, which features a 

comprehensive list of upcoming sporting, cultural, and family fun experiences, is 

now available online and at Council service centres. 

In this season’s edition, residents are invited to try their hand at cheese making 

in Sheffield, Broadfield and Southbridge with Cushla Fitzgibbon; take a tour of 

Selwyn’s heritage at Te Ara Ātea Exhibition Tours; and learn how to form and 

deliver their pepeha at a special workshop in Rolleston and Lincoln. 

The activities include two weeks of special 

CultureFest workshops and performances 

that will kick off after the annual CultureFest 

event in Lincoln on 10 September. The 

SWELL seniors’ lifestyle expo is also back 

for another year, with a range of creative, 

learning, and exercise activities organised for 

Selwyn’s mature residents.

Selwyn leads in employment 

Selwyn’s economy continues to grow and more Selwyn residents are finding work 

according to the latest economic figures. 

The district’s economy has continued to be among the strongest growth areas in 

the country, with the third highest growth over the past year to June with GDP up 

5.2% compared to a growth of 3.1% in the national economy, according to the latest 

quarterly report from economic analysts Infometrics. 

Selwyn also had the highest increase in residents in employment up 6.3% more than 

twice the national average of 2.6% and unemployment remains among the lowest in 

the country at 2.1% compared to the national average of 3.4%. 

The rise was driven by the continued strong population growth in the district, 

Infometrics says. A big jump in the amount of money people are spending in the 

district was also driven by population growth, it says — with consumers spending 13% 

more over the year, out ahead of national growth in spending of 12%. 

The economy continued to grow despite the rate of new housing being built slowing 

from its previous record highs, with the number of residential building consents 

issued falling by 15% in the year to June. 

Tourism however, continued its recent growth, with the number of nights tourists 

stayed in Selwyn going up 63.6% and the amount visitors spent in Selwyn rising 

by 29.7%. 

Students who have achieved outstanding success in academic, sport, 

cultural, art, social responsibility or other areas at school or in their 

community, and students who have overcome barriers or hardships, are 

encouraged to apply. To be eligible they must live in and attend school in 

Selwyn and be planning to undertake full-time education/training at a 

recognised university, polytechnic or training institution in New Zealand. 

Ardra Heffer, who received a scholarship in 2022, is currently completing 

her first year at the University of Canterbury studying towards a Bachelor 

of Health Sciences, majoring in health education. She says she found the 

process of applying for the scholarship straightforward, and that the financial 

support has made a big difference. 

“I’m enjoying all my classes. It’s a big change from high school and it’s a lot of 

hard work, but the key is choosing subjects you’re interested in. I’ve also been 

joining a few groups around university and making new friends, so this year is 

going quite well,” says Ardra. 

One of the things that appealed to Ardra most about her degree was 

the chance to complete internships at prominent health and wellbeing 

organisations. “I want to be able to do something in my career where I can 

help people.” 

She encourages all students who are eligible to apply for the scholarship. 

“It’s important to have a bit of confidence in yourself and just go for it. The 

scholarship has definitely helped financially so I would encourage any high 

school students thinking about applying to try 

their best and apply.”

Selwyn volunteers gain national attention 

Thursday was no ordinary training night for Council’s Civil Defence volunteers in the Community 

Response Team with a national visitor dropping by to see what they do. 

About 102 people attended the event, including the Director / Deputy Chief Executive Emergency 

Management for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), John Price. 

John is the former New Zealand Police Canterbury District Commander and started his new 

Emergency Management leadership role in March this year. 

John came to Selwyn to learn more about the success of the Community Response Team model. He 

addressed the Response Team members on the night and told them that they should take a look in 

the mirror and see the every day hero that is looking back at them. He told the teams they make a 

difference and are emergency management in their communities. 

Community Response Teams were created in Selwyn to ensure 

there are people all over the district during an emergency can 

support their community and provide vital information to Civil 

Defence Emergency Management. 

Currently there are 32 teams with over 210 Community Response 

Team volunteers looking after 34 different communities 

throughout the Selwyn district. 

It builds both capacity and resilience in communities and enables 

the Response Teams to help directly in their communities in an event and provide information back 

to the Emergency Operations Centre about what is happening on the ground. 

Waianiwaniwa Road is closed from Hartleys Road to 

Malvern Hills Road for bridge repairs. Road closures are 

also in place for flood repairs on Highpeak Road from 

Snowdon Road; Malvern Hills Road from Auchenflower 

Road to Waianiwaniwa Road and Zig Zag Road from 

SH77 to Lake Coleridge Road. Traffic lights are in place 

for maintenance on Goulds Road from Ellesmere Junction 

Road to Leeston Road and Old West Coast Road from 

Minchins Road to Redmonds Road. Temporary speed limits are in place for 

maintenance on Plantation Road from Hororata Road to Thwaites Road and

Rolleston looks to future 

Charitable Trust

RESETTING and starting new 

with an emphasis on current 

player retention. That’s what 

new Rolleston rugby manager 

Preston Leaf’s first task is 

in his new role for the club. 

Leaf, a player who has been 

involved with Rolleston for 

the past two seasons, was 

announced as the club’s new 

manager last week. 

It follows Lincoln’s 

appointment of Grant Dearns 

as rugby development officer 

earlier this month. 

Leaf was involved with 

the establishment and 

development of Taupo Marist 

before his move down south. 

Although Leaf is still 

relatively new to Rolleston, 

he played for Rolleston’s 

division 1 side in 2022 before 

captaining division 2 this 

season. He was awarded senior 

player of the year at the club’s 

senior prizegiving this 

month. 

Leaf was approached for the 

role just before the end of this 

season and will be primarily 

focused on growing the club as 

a whole, but with initial focus 

on the senior space. 

“We look to reset and start 

new with an emphasis on 

current player retention 

and enticing new players to 

the club through an innovative 

recruitment drive,” he said. 

“Creating clearer pathways 

for our senior players and our 

junior players will help give 

them a stronger direction on 

where they are going with the 

club.” 

Rolleston and Lincoln 

division 1 sides merged after 

both clubs struggled to field 

independent sides this year. 

With Rolleston’s population 

nearing 30,000, Leaf said 

a focus will be utilising the 

club’s large catchment area. 

“Rolleston rugby club has 

plans to do big things around 

rugby and the community by 

tapping into a growing local 

population,” he said. 

Despite disappointing 

seasons from their senior sides 

this year, there is plenty of 

promise for the future of the 

club. 

Club president Nicky Ruki 

told the Selwyn Times earlier 

this year that a focus was 

ensuring Rolleston’s under-16 

and under-18 teams stay with 

the club as they progress 

through the higher grades. 

“They have really good 

coaches and managers who are 

keen to stay with the team,”

As a result, Rolleston is 

expected to field their first

But for now, he is just 

excited to begin his role, and is 

“looking forward to working 

with everyone within the club 

and in the community.”

Caring for your guinea pig 

Guinea pigs might sound like an easy ask in terms 

of your child’s first pet but these are just a few things 

that you need to know. 

Should I have more than one guinea 

pig? 

A guinea pig can live alone, but ideally shouldn’t 

because they are social animals and need the 

companionship of other guinea pigs. 

What foods can a guinea pig eat? 

Guinea pigs should have fresh, washed leafy greens 

or weeds each day, such as kale or broccoli, which 

are excellent sources of Vitamin C. Guinea pigs don’t 

naturally eat fruit or root vegetables, but you 

can give them in small amounts as treats, such 

as small pieces of carrot or an apple quarter. 

How long do guinea pigs live for? 

Usually four to eight years. 

What makes guinea pigs happy? 

They need exercise, mental stimulation, 

environmental enrichment (e.g. toys, tunnels 

etc), and the ability to express normal 

behaviours, including social interaction with 

other guinea pigs, walking, running, tunnelling, 

exploring, playing, stretching horizontally, 

retreating to a shelter and hiding, foraging, 

chewing, gnawing, and jumping. 

Do guinea pigs like to be held? 

Guinea pigs often form strong bonds 

with their human companions. However, 

they can be flighty animals and will sometimes 

run away from you, even if they’re used to being 

picked up. They tolerate being picked up but are 

unlikely to enjoy it. 

What’s their ideal place to live? 

Guinea pigs should have as large an enclosure 

as possible, ideally with the right amount 

of lined, covered space and soft grass hay to 

provide cushioning. Sawdust or wood shavings 

can cause respiratory issues and should be 

avoided. Make sure to clean out the hutch 

regularly and dispose of any waste. 

How long should I keep my guinea 

pig outside? 

As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended that 

guinea pigs spend at least 1 hour outside of their 

cage every day. However, if your guinea pig has 

never been outside, start small and increase this time 

gradually. 

Do guinea pigs need a bath? 

Guinea pigs are very fastidious about self grooming 

and generally don’t need baths. You may clean them 

with a damp washcloth and brush them with a soft 

brush.

Make a start with carrots for spring

carrots can wait until the end of September.

Gardeners can be seduced by mild weather 

at this time of year, as the temptation is to 

sow seeds in open ground, even though the 

soil is cold and wet. 

Those who succumb to the lure of a 

warmer day or two will lose most seeds. 

Maincrop carrots, parsnips, peas, beet 

and potatoes can wait until the end of next 

month to be sown. 

Patience pays off later, with strong, 

healthy plants the reward for delaying sowing. 

However, small quantities of spinach, 

stump-rooted carrots, hardier lettuce, mustard, 

cress and turnips can be sown now. 

Peas and leeks can be sown under cover, 

for planting out later. If dwarf, quick-maturing 

peas (Earlicrop Massey or Novella) 

are sown at the same time as maincrop 

varieties, such as Greenfeast, a natural succession 

of crops will occur. 

Although they are more resistant to rust 

if sown in autumn, broad beans can be 

sown now, as the seed will germinate at low 

temperatures. Onions can still be sown, if 

soil conditions allow. 

Hoe around spring cabbages to stir soil 

hardened by winter rains. When harvesting, 

take every second plant at the halfgrown 

stage so those remaining have more 

space to mature. 

Spinach likes plenty of organic matter in 

the soil. When preparing the ground for 

this crop, work in compost at the rate of a 

10l bucketful per sq m. Summer spinach 

can be sown from now on, but choose a 

warm spot. 

New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa) 

should not be sown until October. 

Fruit 

Ground prepared in autumn for fruit tree 

planting should be in perfect order for putting 

in young trees. They are best planted by 

the end of this month but if the soil is very 

wet, wait a week or two. 

Do not let grass grow up to the stem of 

a fruit tree but keep an area of clear soil 

around the base. To prevent codlin moth 

(Cydua pomonella), which attacks walnuts 

and pears, as well as apples, a codlin moth 

pheromone trap that lures the male moths 

to its sticky pad can be used. 

Comfrey is sometimes grown under fruit 

trees and is said to reduce codlin moth. The 

herb is cut two or three times a year and left 

on the ground to rot. 

Apple and pear trees’ root action will suffer 

if drainage is poor, so check by digging a 

circular trench, just clear of the root area. 

If water collects in it, dig another leading 

off it from the lowest point. 

Canterbury

Fill the trench with drainage material, 

such as broken bricks or stones, then cover 

with a thin layer of soil. 

Hard pruning will encourage fresh 

growth in fruit trees. Cut back the main 

leaders to two-year or older wood. Rub off 

any fruit buds. Reduce the spurs, especially 

if stunted, by half. A few can be cut back 

flush with the parent branch. Cover every 

cut with pruning paste. This is vital to 

prevent disease. Do not leave prunings on 

the ground. 

A mulch of well-rotted manure spread 

over the root area of the tree will give it a 

boost.

A tale of Triumph 

Local Bayleys’ real estate agent Julie Holt 

puts ideas into action and stands by her 

philosophy, “Keep living your life”. Her goget-it 

attitude carries across all aspects of 

her life, from her job and hobbies, including 

being an active member of Triumph Riders 

Motorcycle Club Canterbury (TRMCC). 

Julie rides a Triumph Speedmaster 1200cc 

cruiser she bought four years ago, while her 

husband Darrell, also a member, rides a 

Triumph Rocket. 

Born in the UK, Julie grew up around 

dirt bikes and rode on a learner’s licence. 

However, after moving to NZ, with kids 

now old enough, in 2005, she started riding 

more seriously after getting her full licence. 

Julie initially rode a Honda Shadow, but 

she couldn’t join Darrell after he joined the 

Triumph Riders Motorcycle Club, as her 

bike wasn’t a Triumph or BEARs (British,

Not letting that stop her, she shocked 

her husband and phoned him from the 

Triumph dealers bike shop one day, saying, 

“I’ve exchanged my Honda for a Triumph, 

and now I can ride with you!” (She said, 

‘I’m sure he sounded happy!) Julie’s also 

owned a Triumph Bonneville with a Union 

Jack painted tank after bidding to help 

get the money up and then unexpectedly 

winning it at a St John charity auction. 

Riding with like-minded people in the 

TRMCC, Julie advises the club is made up 

of all sorts of down-to-earth, wonderful 

characters who help charities and 

fundraisers. She confirms, “You couldn’t 

find a more genuine bunch of people”. 

TRMCC organises monthly rides and larger 

events, including an upcoming Poker Run. 

The club is safety conscious; they discuss 

potential hazards before any ride. 

Julie confirms New Zealand’s stunning 

countryside, especially the South Island, 

has encouraged them to ride. A two-week 

riding tour from Howick in the North 

Island to the South Island saw them ride 

through Arthur’s Pass and surrounds with 

the scenery whetting their appetite. Julie 

remembers, “It was early morning, the mist 

was rolling down the mountains, and it 

wouldn’t have been a shock if a dinosaur 

had popped its head out”. While touring 

and tenting with the bikes parked up, they 

met many people who approached them, 

saying, “You’re living the dream, and this is 

what we’d like to do”. 

Loving the freedom of the bike, Julie 

expressed, “You’re at one with the bike and 

one with your beautiful surroundings” 

and “You don’t have time to think about 

work, about any stresses as you’ve got to 

concentrate on the road”. She rides with 

pride and, when asked, suggests riders 

ride to the conditions, and if they feel 

uncomfortable, stop and go a different way 

and “follow the sunshine.”

the point of putting on your gravestone ‘I

Spring is in the air, with daffodils showing 

off their glory and lambs starting to appear 

in the paddocks. Lambing season is on the 

way, and ensuring the readiness of your farm

there are several checks to make on all your 

farm vehicles to ensure they’re ready when 

needed. However, with the extensive number

1. Have your vehicle serviced to check if an 

oil change and new filter are needed. This will

running smoothly. Check air filters as they 

may have clogged with dust and need to be 

cleaned or replaced. Also, check under the

inflated to the correct levels, according to the

warm water, baking soda and a wire brush. 

Also, check the battery mounting and the 

physical condition of the battery. 

4. Check inside trailer couplings, where 

the tow ball rests, for severe wear and any 

rust, metal fatigue or cracks in the housing. 

Correctly set the adjustment screw to ensure 

a strong connection while towing. Check 

the tyre tread, safety chains and shackles. 

Good brakes on a trailer are essential to 

avoid accidents and improve managing the 

trailer so replace any brake pads worn or 

damaged. Inspect the flooring in a trailer and 

replace any broken boards or fix areas with 

extensive rust. Check the electrical systems 

are working correctly and replace any worn or 

corroded wiring. Ensure your trailer stability 

by checking the suspension and the bearings 

to allow smooth rotation of the wheels. If 

using a cage on the trailer, ensure it will attach 

securely. 

Deal with any farm vehicle issues before 

the busy spring season takes all your time.

Sustainable and sporty with a lot of space

Mercedes-Benz continues its 

push to offer a broader range of 

electric models, by adding an 

EV version of its compact, but 

enormously practical EQB SUV 

to its expanding EV portfolio. 

The EQB follows in the 

footsteps of the smaller EQA 

SUV, which alphabetically is a 

logical evolution. Since its launch 

in 2021, it’s become a popular 

choice for those keen to commit 

to a more sustainable low 

emission vehicle, with premium 

looks and an inherently sporty 

disposition. 

What you get with the EQB is 

all that plus lots more space for 

people and luggage, in a vehicle 

capable of seating up to seven, or 

you can reconfigure the cabin to 

create a whooping 1600L of load 

capacity. 

Powering the EQB is an 

electric drivetrain developed by 

Mercedes-EQ. It’s lithium-ion 

battery has a usable energy 

content of 66.5 kWh. Weighing a 

respectable 469 kg, it’s positioned 

beneath the vehicle floor, giving 

the EQB an almost ideal centre of 

gravity. Re-energizing the battery 

is no chore with high charging 

speeds with up to 11 kW of 

output via the AC (alternating 

current) charging system, or 

up to 100 kW using DC (direct 

current) charger. Either way, get 

it tethered to once of these and it 

will be fully electrified before you 

know it. 

The EQB has more in common 

than you might think with its 

GLB petrol powered sibling, 

including plenty of heaps of 

useable space from its compact 

footprint. With its flat floor and 

tall roofline, you are set to cart 

all manner of things from bikes 

to surf boards. 

The most affordable EQB is the 

$99,900 five-seat 250. A $2,900 

optional third row extends the 

seating to seven. A 140 kW 

single e-motor dispatches power 

directly to the front wheels with 

efforts backed up by a hard 

working 385 Nm of torque. It has 

a handy enough driving range of 

371 km according to the WLTP 

test standard. 

The EQB 350 4MATIC 

AWD lined up for this road 

test is priced at $109,900. 

Both models are covered by a 

five-year unlimited kilometre 

warranty and an 8 years cover 

on the Battery. But wait there’s 

more! The EQB has a Type 2 

CCS charging socket capable of 

accepting up to 11 kW (AC) and 

100 kW (DC). Charging cables 

compatible with our domestic 

power sockets and public 

charging stations are standard 

with either vehicle. 

The EQB model holding all 

bragging rights for power and 

features is the 350 4MATIC that 

also happens to offer the more 

energized and engaging drive of 

this pair. It gets a major leg up

instantly no engine revs 

required. It makes most internal 

combustion engines seem a 

tad like yesterday’s technology, 

which they probably will be 

in about five years. This when 

electric vehicles start to tighten 

their grip on our market in ways. 

The EQB delivers exceptional 

performance across the board 

and does it with ease, and is 

brilliantly supported by two 

outstanding electric motors and 

a one speed automatic.

Your guide to sparkling windows 

As the gloomy days pass and sunshine 

becomes more frequent, dirty and streaky 

windows that have been left over winter 

are easily seen. Clean and sparkling 

windows allow natural light to flood in, 

providing a more inviting view of the 

outside world and improving our home’s 

appeal. Following a few simple steps 

and methods will ensure your home has 

crystal-clear windows. 

Preparation 

It’s best to clean on a cloudy day. Get 

all the things you will need before you 

start. Use a stable ladder or an extendable 

pole for those higher, hard-to-reach 

areas. Fill a bucket with a water and white 

vinegar mix or water and a few drops 

of dishwashing liquid, or a spray bottle 

containing store-bought window cleaning 

solution, a squeegee or a window vacuum, 

a microfibre cloth or sponge, paper towels, 

and a soft bristle brush. 

Wipe down 

Use the soft bristle brush to wipe the 

window frame and sill to remove dust, 

grit, and cobwebs. 

Apply solution 

Wet the microfibre cloth or sponge with 

the solution in the bucket and wash the 

glass, starting from the top down to the 

bottom, to avoid drips. Use only sufficient 

cleaning solution to do the job. 

Squeegee 

Achieve streak-free windows by using 

the squeegee correctly. One method is 

to go from the top of the glass directly 

down to the bottom, wiping its blade with 

a dry cloth after each pass. Start at the 

top again but overlap the last path you 

took. A more advanced method is to fan 

the squeegee in short strokes in several 

different directions quickly and evenly 

without moving the blade. This method 

will prevent water from getting under the 

edge to create streaks. 

Finishing up 

Wipe the window frame, sill and any 

remaining solution using a dry microfibre 

cloth or paper towels, checking for any 

remaining streaks. Buff any away with the 

cloth. 

Maintenance 

Regularly cleaning your windows will 

enable you to complete the job more 

quickly and efficiently each time, and this 

routine will give you consistently clear 

and clean windows. 

Even though window cleaning may not 

be a favourite task, having streak-free 

sparkling windows will give you a brighter 

outlook and allow more natural light into 

your home. Of course, another solution 

is to have your windows professionally 

cleaned and have the experts use their

Police say the 25-year-old 

from Burnham recorded 1026

A DARFIELD farmer has 

spoken of watching a man leap into 

the flooded Hawkins River to try and 

save himself after a helicopter winch 

rescue operation failed. 

Rod May had taken his tractor to 

the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and 

reach the middle-aged man who had 

been clinging to the branches of a tree 

in the rising waters on Sunday night. 

The man had driven into the 

flooded river, escaped from his car 

and ca led emergency services from 

his ce lphone which he managed to 

keep with him. 

Ultimately, a second helicopter 

winch operation plucked the man 

to safety after he was swept downstream. 

It was a happy ending to the 

ordeal which had lasted more than 

three hours. The rescue was among 

several in Canterbury on Sunday in 

flooded rivers. 

May said he and his family had just 

had dinner when a neighbour alerted 

them. Arriving about 8.50pm, he saw 

the floodwaters were too high for the 

tractor, however, he used its lights for 

i luminating the site where the man

four times by youth believes a 

family group conference was a 

waste of time. 

The meeting involved one 

of the teens, a 13-year-old, 

his family, Oranga Tamariki, 

police and four other victims, 

including another dairy

Facilitated by Oranga 

Tamariki, youth justice family 

group conferences are 

intended to help youth take 

responsibility and leave them 

with a plan for the future.

A BAR patron who won $1200 

on the pokies may have been 

targeted by thieves moments after 

she co lected the money. 

A group of men who were in 

the bar a the same time are the 

focus of police inquiries. It is 

believed they watched her being 

paid, and then quickly swooped. 

The incident happened at The 

Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln 

two weeks ago. 

After she was paid out a the 

bar, the men who had been 

si ting nearby went over and 

congratulated her. While she was 

distracted the money disappeared 

from her handbag. She only 

realised it was gone after she left 

the hotel. 

Police have taken CCTV 

security camera footage from the 

hotel which shows the men going 

over to the woman and mobbing 

her in a congratulatory way. The 

footage also captures a hand from 

one of the men going towards the
