salutations
staying social
and active
Battle of the West
What a fantastic few months it has been at
Teman! We’ve been keeping busy hosting all
sorts of exciting events. Over in the east, we’ve
held our Teman half-yearly events, and they
have been a huge success.
We’ve had Winter Beach parties, Comedy
days, Murder Mysteries, Dance and Dessert
Parties, Bus adventures, Birthday Bashes, and
many more. I’ve been able to attend a few of
the events and I love seeing residents come
together being social and active.
But that’s not all. On the other side of the
country, we celebrated the 20th birthday of
The Rise, and it was a blast. It was the largest
event at the village, with close to 250 people
attending. There was food, music, and laughter.
All the key ingredients of a Teman event. We
even produced a special anniversary book for
the occasion, filled with stories and photos.
Looking through it, it’s amazing to see the
evolution of the community. It was also heartwarming
to see photos of many residents from
when they were 20 years old and what they
were doing at that stage in their life. Married
and migrating to Australia seemed to be a
popular theme with many residents of The Rise.
If you’re interested, there’s a digital copy of the
magazine on our website for you to have a look at.
We’re not done yet. We’re gearing up for our
annual Open Day at Lakeside, and I can’t
wait! It’s always such a great event that
brings residents, their families, and the wider
community together. The finishing touches of
the planning are coming together, and I’m sure
it’s going to be an amazing day.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue of
life+style, and we look forward to seeing you all
around at the villages.
In Western Australia, Teman is home to two
vibrant communities - The Rise by Teman and
Lakeside by Teman. Both these villages are
situated 100km apart and the residents of
both communities are very proud of their bowls
groups. Recently, the bowls group of The Rise
by Teman in Ridgewood hosted Lakeside in
a mixed competition of four games. It was a
beautiful Autumn day, and the sunshine was
perfect for the bowls competition.
The event was a great success, with both
communities coming together to enjoy a day
of friendly competition. The competition was
intense, with both teams giving their best to
win. It all came down to the final bowl of the
final game, with The Rise winning by just one
point. It was a nail-biting finish, and everyone
was thrilled with the outcome.
We would like to extend a massive
congratulations to The Rise bowls group for
hosting the event and organising the luncheon.
It was a fantastic day, and everyone had a
great time. We would also like to thank all
the Lakeside residents that made the journey
north to participate in the competition. It was
amazing to see the two communities come
together and enjoy each other’s company.
Lakeside will be hosting another event later
this year, and we are sure that it will be just
as successful as this one. We hope that
both communities will continue to come
together and enjoy friendly competition and
camaraderie.
The Rise
20th Birthday
A Celebration
The Rise by Teman is a community that has
flourished over the past twenty years. In 2003,
The Rise was only a handful of homes and a lot
of sand. Now, it has grown into a thriving village
with a rich history and wonderful memories. To
celebrate this milestone, Teman hosted a party
for all residents that was filled with music, food,
and laughter.
Prior to the party, residents were asked to send
in a photo of themselves from when they were
20 years old, along with a description of what
they were doing at that stage of their life. These
photos were used as part of a guessing game
that added to the festivities and provided a lot
of fun.
A book was also produced to commemorate
the village’s growth over the years. It included
stories from many groups within the village, old
photos of the village being built, and memories
of social events. This book was gifted to all
residents, but you can also view a digital copy
on the teman website.
The party was attended by the City of Wanneroo
Mayor Linda Aitken and the Federal Member
for Pearce, Tracey Roberts, which shows
how prominent The Rise by Teman is in the
wider community. The festivities were kicked
off by speeches from Resident Committee
Chairperson Harvey Bell, Village Manager Ciara
Purcell, Federal Member for Pearce Tracey
Roberts, Managing Director Jamie Sterland,
and one of the longest residing residents, Eddie
Baldwin. The dancing kicked off with our newest
team member, Brigitte, and went well into the
night thanks to the talented guitarist Jamie.
The chef, Pierre, put on a delicious spread of
paella, roast meats, salads, and his infamous
homemade pies. The lads in the Hobby Shed
made a photo booth, which gave residents the
opportunity to capture the night in their own silly
way. It’s amazing how much joy a feather boa
and oversized sunglasses can bring!
It was a marvellous celebration filled with
memories that will last a lifetime. We’re grateful
to everyone who helped make it possible.
pet
care
Snail pellets are unsafe for our pets
As we’re heading into Spring, you might be
doing more in your garden. And as much as
we don’t like snails munching on our leaves,
we need to be mindful that even in small
amounts, insecticides and pesticides can be
life-threatening to your pet. Because of this,
it is important to make sure your pet is not
around when you are using them. Products that
contain organophosphates should be avoided
particularly, as well as products aimed at snails
and slugs.
There are several signs of poisoning that can
vary depending on the type of toxin. Some of
these include:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Increased urination
• Restlessness
• Hyperactivity
• Muscle twitching or shaking
• Seizures
Please note: some manufacturers claim their
snail baits are ‘pet friendly’. This claim is made
on the basis that the bait includes a bittering
agent. Bittering agents only act as a deterrent,
and some pets may still eat the extremely toxic
baits. We recommend that these products are
used with great caution.
If you are concerned that your pet may have
ingested one of these toxins, please call your
local vet.
five good
friends
Supporting your immune health
At Five Good Friends, we believe that healthy
lifestyle choices support healthy ageing. Having
access to the support and care that you need,
when you need it, is incredibly important.
As we move out of winter and COVID-19 cases
continue to circulate within the community,
it’s important to keep a focus on your immune
health. Fortunately, there are many ways you
can support your body to fight and recover from
infection.
Remaining physically active, eating and sleeping
well, having satisfying social relationships, and
managing stress are not only the fundamentals
of healthy living, they also enable your immune
system to perform at its best. These are all
areas that you can tackle with the support of
health and aged care professionals.
Immune boosting foods
A diet that is high in vegetables, fruit and
wholefoods will expose you to a wide variety of
nutrients that support immune health. Zinc and
Vitamin C are especially important for immune
function. Zinc-containing foods include oysters,
pumpkin seeds and broccoli. Red capsicum,
kiwi fruit and citrus fruits are high in Vitamin C.
Highly processed food on the other hand,
offers limited nutrients and is generally high in
sugar, salt, and saturated fat. This can cause
inflammation in the body. A fresh, healthy diet is
the best choice for supporting immune function.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D’s chief role in the body is to maintain
healthy bones however it has been shown
to have an important role to play in immune
function. 10-15 minutes of daily sun exposure
is generally sufficient for the body’s Vitamin
D needs however supplementation can be
required in colder months or for people with
insufficient sunlight exposure. Speak to your GP
about monitoring your Vitamin D levels.
Lifestyle factors
Other natural ways to support immune function
include regular exercise, reducing stress,
maintaining a healthy weight, moderate alcohol
consumption and adequate sleep.
Mindful activities such as meditation, yoga and
walking can assist with stress reduction and
improve the quality of your sleep. Establishing
a relaxing pre-bed routine and reducing
stimulants such as coffee, alcohol and blue
light exposure can also help. It’s worth a visit
to your GP if you have persistent problems with
your sleep and it affects your daytime wellbeing.
Getting the right support
Research has shown that feeling happy can give
your immune system an extra boost. People
who are more socially connected to family,
friends and the community are not only happier,
but they are also physically healthier and live
longer than people who are less connected.
Having positive support networks helps the
nervous system to relax which has a flow on
effect for overall health and immunity.
“know when to reach
out for support”
Everyone wants the opportunity to be free, have
independence and make their own choices,
and sometimes, you just need a little help from
your friends. Five Good Friends understands
that some of the most important choices in life
are those that support the ability to stay in the
home and community you love.
Even if you just need a helping hand with
housework, supermarket shopping or someone
to share a cuppa with, we identify the type of
support person that will be best suited to you
and match you carefully.
Five Good Friends are also specialists in
assisting you through the My Aged Care journey.
Please contact us on 1300 787 581 with any
may need, in your home.
story
The hidden benefits of starting a
new life in a retirement village
Jacquie Liddiard | Lakeside by Teman
For Jacquie Liddiard, a resident of Lakeside by Teman,
moving into a lifestyle village was something that she had
“absolutely no intentions” of doing.
But she now describes it as the best move she could’ve
made, and her story of downsizing and transitioning into a
retirement village highlights one of the hidden benefits of
lifestyle living.
Moving Into A Lifestyle Village
Jacquie was still working as an IT and Senior
Admin Manager when her husband, a few years
older, expressed the thought of moving into a
retirement village. Though she initially opposed
the idea, her husband was tired of living in the
inner city.
She initially came around and agreed to start
looking, but it still wasn’t a decision they made
lightly:
Five years after they started their search –
visiting multiple houses and villages all over the
area in which they lived – they finally settled on
Lakeside by Teman in Ravenswood, WA.
Jacquie recalls liking multiple aspects of each
of the different villages they visited, but only one
of them had the community feel she’d heard
so much about, stating that it felt “like a small
town.”
How To Downsize
Jacquie admits that downsizing was a difficult
task, especially so as they had a large home with
a theatre room on a huge block.
However, she found that the process of giving
away precious possessions and furniture was
easier than figuring out what would fit in their
new home.
“We just took virtually everything except our
prized possessions and just gave it all away. And
then when we came down, we refurnished.”
Her advice to others is to give away “those
precious things that you’re not going to want
for the rest of your life” and, if you can afford it,
purchase new items to start fresh.
“It’s easier, it’s fun, and it gives you a new lease
on life.”
What’s it Like Living in A Retirement Village?
One of the biggest advantages of lifestyle living
is the social aspect – that “community feel” that
the pair had searched for for half a decade.
Jacquie loves trying new things, but her favourite
pastimes are participating in quilting, cards, and
darts. She also helps to run the coffee shop – a
social hub in the village where people love to
catch up over their morning cup of coffee or tea.
Whether you’re getting involved with activities
and hobbies that you’re used to, or you decide to
try out something new – Jacquie says there’s no
better way to meet people.
“Making friends in the village is probably the
easiest thing – just go to the events and you’re
bound to find people you click with. You can’t go
to all of them, there are just so many, but choose
the things you think you like or are interested in.”
However, she does advise people to get involved
sooner rather than later. “There’s so much to
enjoy,” and you’ll want to make the most of it.
Facilities and Pets
In terms of facilities, Lakeside by Teman near
Mandurah offers residents a brilliant selection,
including a bowling green, gym, golf putting
green, spa, and – Jacquie’s favourites – the
recently upgraded swimming pool and sauna.
There’s also storage for your boat or caravan, so
you can keep all of your recreational gear safe
and secure when you’re not out adventuring.
The best part? Your family are more than
welcome to come and use all of the same
facilities with you, so you can share the fun and
make memories together all year round.
22 | Spring 2023 Spring 2023 | 23

Jacquie also speaks highly of the dog run, which
has been a great way to meet other residents,
and believes that having pets is “so important for
companionship, especially for those who don’t
have extended family.”
We couldn’t agree more, which is why all Teman
lifestyle communities are pet friendly.
Care and Support During A Difficult Time
Losing a loved one is never easy, and for Jacquie,
it was a heartbreaking experience. But it also
highlighted a hidden benefit of moving into a
lifestyle village.
Her husband, who was ultimately the reason
that the pair moved into Lakeside Teman,
unfortunately passed away less than a year after
the move.
Jacquie says that without the community of
Lakeside, she doesn’t know how she would have
coped.
“If I hadn’t been at Lakeside, it would have been
exceedingly difficult. Neither of us had extended
family, so without the support and the care of the
staff, management, and residents, it would have
been a very different experience. I’m so pleased
I’m here and not outside.”
Being surrounded by friendly neighbours – and
having her beloved pet by her side – gave her
the support she needed during one of the most
difficult times of her life.
Jacquie’s experience highlights the importance
of finding a good community and like-minded
companionship in a lifestyle village, regardless of
where you’re looking or when you’re thinking of
making the move.
Because it’s this support and companionship,
the relationships you form, that make the hard
times better and the good times great.
When Should I Move Into A Retirement Village?
From your lifestyle and travel options to your
health and social life – there are scores of
benefits to making the move, but at the end of
the day, it’s a personal decision that should be
based on your individual needs and preferences.
So it’s a good idea to research different options,
visit potential villages, and talk to current
residents to gain a better understanding of what
it’s like to live there before making a decision.
If you ask Jacquie, however, her advice is simple:
Don’t wait.
“Seriously, just do it. Forget what you’ve had in
the past. Start afresh. It’s a wonderful place to
live, and you just feel like you should have been
here 10 years ago.”
“Because it’s this support
and companionship, the
relationships you form, that
make the hard times better
and the good times great.”
June’s story
June Paine | Ridge Estate by Teman
June, a resident of Ridge Estate by Teman, has
lived a fulfilling life filled with love, family, and
hobbies. June grew up in Maitland. Her mother
Marjorie raised June and her brother Neil after
her father Norm was killed in a training accident
at Kapooka Army Camp in Wagga in 1945 during
WWII. June was 4 and Neil was only 10 months
old. June went to Milo Primary school and then
off to Dominican Convent. She even worked as
an Usherette at the Savoy Picture Theatre, where
she met the love of her life, Max.
When Max suggested downsizing, they found
their perfect home at Ridge Estate by Teman.
June fell in love with it the moment she saw it,
and when they moved in, they were the only
residents for three months. June enjoys the
sense of belonging and community at Ridge
Estate and has made wonderful friends. June
never feels alone and cherishes the company of
others.
June has several hobbies, including interior
decorating, gardening, and socialising. She and
Max even won competitions for their garden
before they moved into Ridge Estate. They also
travelled around Australia and won holidays to
Norfolk and Hamilton Islands. June loves going
out and enjoys the movies.
When asked about a memory that makes her
smile, June talks fondly about her late husband
Max, whom she talks to every day. She also
adores her two children, Scott and Joanne, and
her five grandchildren. Her family is her reason
for smiling every day and make her heart sing.
June’s story is one of love, family, and
community. She is a testament to the happiness
that can be found in life by embracing hobbies,
forming relationships, and cherishing the
memories we create with loved ones.
• Marrinup POW Camp Trail
The Marrinup POW Camp Trail is a
4.5km circuit that takes about 2 hours
to complete. This trail leads you through
a mysterious place with a surprising
history. The Marrinup camp was originally
established in the 1880s to harvest
Jarrah, but it later became a prisoner of
war camp during World War II. The camp
was built to provide farm labour and cut
firewood for the Perth area, and it could
accommodate up to 1200 men, mostly of
Italian and German descent.
The trail has recently been upgraded with signage and information, making it a lovely
walk while absorbing local history. The trail begins at the car park, and the camp entry
is approximately 300m along the path. There are interpretive information panels at the
entry to the camp, and the trail follows the original foundations.
Spring is the best time to walk this trail when wildflowers are in full bloom, making a
stunning display. So, if you’re looking for an engaging and informative walk, the POW
Camp Trail is a perfect choice.
What’s been happening in your village?
Winter sees an influx of residents head off to
warmer weather up North, but we were still
as busy and active as normal. July saw us
celebrate our 20th Birthday. We had a big party
to celebrate the huge milestone in the main hall
and displayed some old photos and stories of
when the village first opened in 2003. We had
special guests attend with Tracey Roberts MP
coming along for the celebrations as she has
always been a big part of the social events here
at the village. We had over 250 residents attend
this event, and it was a huge success. Thank
you to everyone who contributed to making this
a great celebration. Our annual Christmas in
July evening was held in the main hall and had
live entertainment from “Jammin with Charlie”.
August saw our social committee hold a sausage
sizzle at Bunnings to raise much needed funds.
Thank you to all our volunteers that helped out,
and well done to our social group for another
successful run of events at The Rise.
Something that has made you smile at
your village
It was lovely to host our first ever rival Bowls
Competition played between 2 Teman villages,
The Rise vs Lakeside. Everyone enjoyed a
delicious lunch afterwards and some nice cake
to mark this special occasion. The Rise secured
the win by 2 point, but a rematch will take place
later in the year at Lakeside. A fun and social day
enjoyed by all involved.
Some fun things coming up at your village
The Rise looks like it will be as busy as usual
in the coming months. We will have our end of
year annual volunteer’s night which is put on
by the residents committee. All our volunteers
enjoy a night of free food and beverages as a
thank you for all their amazing work throughout
the year. We will also be having our Christmas
function which will be catered for by Pierre and
looking forward to our amazing Australia Day
celebrations in January. Always a big event here
at The Rise.
What’s been happening in your village?
Lakeside has been full of fun activities. Everything
from bowls, tennis, happy hour, cards, and
games each week. Recently a group of resident
volunteers catered a scrumptious Sunday Three
course Lamb Roast for fellow residents. This event
was “sold out” quickly and many residents are
hopeful this will be held once a month or every
two months. Along with movie nights, hamburger
night, darts, the community garden, and various
exercise groups you will always find an activity or
group to enjoy.
Recently a group of bowls players ventured to
the Teman village north of the river, The Rise, to
challenge the bowlers in a day of competition.
After a day of close competition, The Rise village
was the overall winner and Lakeside will try again
for trophy and bragging rights in the future.
As the financial year has commenced, new
projects are planed with some already under
way. Two larger projects are a shed to store
the bowls green keeping equipment closer to
the bowling green. This will provide for easy
access for the resident volunteers who perfectly
maintain the surface to their high standards.
Next plan is for a foot path to be installed from
the club house to the Administration Building.
We’re always making improvements at Lakeside.
Something that has made you smile at
your village
The fellas in the hobby workshops have been
using their skills to refurbish park bench seats at
Lakeside. The fun and friendships made along the
way with this project is pleasing to see as are the
“new” benches. I know that all Lakeside residents
will be enjoying the benches around the grounds
as the group of fellas continue with this project.
Some fun things coming up at your village
Lakeside Open Day is just around corner on
8th October. Lakeside residents enjoy the
village on the day. Vintage car display, food,
entertainment, and a performance from the
Lakeside Choir is not to be missed and looking
at our stunning newly refurbished display
homes is a must. Melbourne Cup Luncheon
with sweeps and games is a great day at the
club house, along with the yearly Quiz Night
and Village Concert where talented residents
perform showcasing their talents for everyone’s
enjoyment.
to the bright welcoming that all receive when
What’s been happening in your village?
Beacham has been keeping busy, two of our
although played with cards. We play 5 rounds
and share a light afternoon tea provided by the
ladies and then play the last 5 rounds. Each
week there are new faces, many laughs and it’s
always exciting to see what practical prizes the
ladies have put together.
As part of the monthly Teman event, Beacham
turned into a Pub for the evening, for our “Pub
Night In”, this was so much fun. We had pub
grub, pool competitions, darts, card table and the
highlight of the night was karaoke and dancing.
We also held a ladies only high tea for Mother’s
Day. It was a very suave event, with fine bone
china cups, saucers & teapots. Cakes, pastries,
sandwiches all served on 3 tiered stands. It
was lovely to spoil all the mum’s and the setting
bought back fond memories of the “tea parties”
many residents attended in their younger years.
State of Origin continues to create great banter
between staff and residents, surely 2024 is going
to be the year for the “Blues??”
Bare Foot bowls, BBQ & Beers for all the dads
to celebrate Father’s Day. This was held at a
local bowling club for the afternoon. Nice to see
the blokes out and about – we just hope all the
ladies behaved while we were gone!
Our allied health in house service continues to
grow. We have a podiatrist that attends every
6 weeks and a dental prosthesis who has
just come on board for monthly visits or when
required. We have also welcomed a community
line dancing group to Beacham. Although I must
say, us Beachamites, should have taken a few
private lessons before joining in!!
Our social club is very proactive, and we have
enjoyed, a sausage sizzle, several of us attended
The Biggest Morning Tea, a bus trip to a local
Historical village and our annual Christmas in
July, this year with an Aussie twist.
Something that has made you smile at
Our gardens at Beacham are in full bloom
and the array of different plants and colour is
stunning. Several residents enjoy pottering in the
can you not smile at this time of year.
The pub night really made my heart swell and
my smile lasted for days. It is just lovely when
you put in effort, it’s appreciated, and residents
enjoy themselves. We all had several laughs and
lots of smiles.
Some fun things coming up at your village
We are not looking at slowing down here in
December of course is the Teman Christmas
