Canterbury families have got 

free advice and treatment from 

their community pharmacy. 

Issues such as skin and eye 

infections, acute diarrhoea 

and head lice can be treated 

under a Government-funded 

scheme which gives families 

more access to consultations for 

common conditions over the 

winter months.

Mairiki Tuatini (right) was one 

of those who used the Minor 

Health Conditions Service since 

it was introduced in mid-June. 

The service runs until the end 

of the month. 

Tuatini recently rang his 

general practice to make an 

appointment for his 11-year-old 

son’s skin infection and his 

3-year-old son’s flu. The GP told 

him Eastern Pharmacy in Pages 

Rd could help. 

“Getting free treatment for 

our boys’ skin infection and 

nasty flu at the pharmacy made 

a big difference for my family. 

It gave my partner and I a lot of 

relief, my sons got the medicine 

they needed, and we had money 

left for things like nappies and 

food,” he said. 

Tuatini’s family got access to 

advice and treatment from his 

community pharmacy as part 

of Te Whatu Ora’s winter plan 

to reduce pressure on primary 

and hospital services and better 

use the skilled network of 

community pharmacists. 

Māori and Pacific children 

under the age of 14 and their 

whānau and community 

service card holders get free 

consultation and treatment for 

certain minor ailments until the 

end of September. 

Tuatini said he was surprised 

and thrilled with the service. 

“The pharmacist told me to 

put my money away because 

there was a scheme for winter 

that provided.”

SAFE SPEED platforms and a new 

road surface are being proposed to 

help manage increased traffic since the 

opening of the Northern Corridor. 

Feedback has opened on plans to 

install traffic calming measures on 

Flockton St and Francis Ave which have 

both been impacted by additional use 

since the motorway opened in 2020. 

Safe speed platforms at 70 metre 

intervals have been proposed, with seven 

to be installed on Flockton St and five on 

Francis Ave, to encourage reduced and 

consistent speeds along the road. 

Transport planning and delivery 

manager Jacob Bradbury said they 

have heard a lot of feedback from 

residents on Flockton St. 

“They said that they were experiencing 

vibrations, so to mitigate this we’ve 

decided to also include resurfacing 

for that street which will reduce these 

vibrations in the long term,” Bradbury 

said. 

The plans were developed following 

feedback and data collected during trials 

set up 

last year. 

Temporary raised speed humps and 

one- and two-way chicanes were installed 

on Flockton St, while speed humps and 

road narrowing were installed on Francis 

Ave. 

Bradbury said they considered all 

sorts of other traffic calming measures 

when working on their proposed designs 

including chicanes, road narrowings, a 

cul-de-sac, left-in left-out, and reopening 

Forfar St. 

“However, when these options were 

assessed against our specific criteria, 

looking at how much they affected 

vehicle speeds and volumes, our wider 

transport network and other transport 

modes, the proposals we’re putting 

forward are the most suitable overall.”

THE SUMNER Silver Band is holding 

a free concert at the Sumner Town Hall 

Matuku Takotako on Sunday from 

3-5pm. It will form part of the band’s 

preparation for the Provincial Brass 

Band Contest on September 23. 

The band has been a popular and 

integral part of Sumner for well over 

100 years, playing throughout the 

year at functions like Anzac Day and 

Sumner’s Christmas carols, and also 

at venues such as the rest home, local 

farmers’ markets and other community 

gatherings. 

The local character of the band is 

emphasised by its new conductor, 

Victoria van Uden whose husband Paul 

played the trombone in the band as a 

schoolboy. Their son Harry in turn is 

also learning the trombone through the 

band. 

Since becoming the band’s conductor 

and musical director in September last, 

under van Uden’s very capable guidance 

and inspiring baton, the band is enjoying 

a resurgence of interest. 

Membership has grown with a 

number of younger and older people 

joining, though the band is still keen to 

welcome new members and can supply 

instruments if needed. 

Refreshments will be provided for 

a donation to offset hall hire during 

the September 23 concert at Te Aratai 

College, Aldwins Rd. First band at about 

9.30am.

Call for volunteers to help 

children with parents in jail

VOLUNTEERS ARE needed for 

a mentorship programme to help 

support children with a parent in 

prison. 

Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou is a 

national charity which cares for 

families of people serving prison 

or community sentences. 

There are an estimated 17,000 

children in New Zealand with a 

parent in prison. 

The mentorship programme 

connects them with an adult 

who can act as a confidant and 

friend. 

A Christchurch mother, 

whose children received 

mentoring while their father 

spent eight years in prison, spoke 

anonymously about the benefits 

of the programme. 

She said having her ex-partner 

in prison “brought so many 

challenges for our kids”. 

She was grateful for the 

support of Pillars,and said 

it “helped me rebuild the 

foundations of my wee family”. 

She said the mentors “gave my 

children a sense of normality 

as, until recently, I have reached 

a point I can answer their 

questions without falling apart”. 

There is a waiting list with six 

children in the city who need 

mentors. 

Pillars general manager Tuhi 

Leef said there is a “greater need 

than ever” for volunteers. 

He said it is partly due to 

the pandemic, which put more 

distance between parents in jail 

and their family. This added to 

their emotional distress. 

Leef said there is an urgent 

need for male mentors who can 

help boys. 

“It’s often it’s dad that’s in 

prison. So having a positive male 

role model.” 

Without intervention, children 

of prisoners are more than nine 

times more likely to go prison 

than other children. 

Leef said mentors help change 

the statistics. 

“What they’re able to help do 

with these rangatahi [young 

people] is transformational. 

What we want for our whānau is 

positive, better outcomes.” 

To become a 

Pillars mentor, 

applicants must 

commit to at least 

12 months in the 

programme.

fortnightly for a 

catch up or fun 

outing. 

Danielle Moore is a 25-yearold 

PhD student at of Canterbury 

University. She has mentored a 

17-year-old girl for the past six 

years. 

It has been rewarding for her. 

“I feel like I get the same out of 

it that she does,” Moore said. 

“Over the time she’s become, 

you know, a really close friend 

and someone that I’ve grown 

with since 19.” 

Moore said: “What we do has 

sort of developed overtime.” 

From connecting over their 

shared interest in art to helping 

study for NCEA, Moore has seen 

her grow throughout her teenage 

years. 

Recently they started going 

thrifting at second hand clothing 

stores together and discussing 

life after high school. 

“She can share 

anything with me 

– and she knows 

that.”

Hip Hop summit aims to inspire at-risk youth

Hip Hop Summit returns to 

Christchurch later this month 

with live performances from 

top local artists, workshops for 

young artists and the National 

NZ Beatbox competition. 

The summit, which celebrates 

50 years of hip-hop, brings 

together Christchurch hip hop 

artists, including Hunter Wilson 

(aka King Cass), Apathxtic 

and Fr3quent, with the aim of 

helping at-risk youth. 

It runs from September 22-30. 

Organiser, Flava FM DJ and 

Youth & Cultural Development 

(YCD) youth worker ‘Red’ Setu 

said he hopes to build on the 

success of last year’s event, which 

drew just over 10,000 attendees. 

By bringing together up-andcoming 

artists and at-risk youth, 

he hoped the event would create 

a platform for young people to 

express themselves positively. 

Setu said he sees his younger 

self while working with at-risk 

youth and remembers how 

accessible 

and relatable 

hip-hop was 

growing up 

in a highly 

deprived 

home. 

“Some are 

great rappers 

Lucas Fahey 

and dancers, 

but they (lack) 

direction in understanding hiphop 

culture,” Setu said.

Big Sima, who performed at last 

year’s summit and is helping to 

run workshops this year, said 

hip hop helped him when he 

was a teenager struggling with 

problems at 

home and 

bored and 

“disruptive” 

in class.

kept us out of trouble.” 

Fahey said he grew up without 

a male role model, but hip hop 

supplied him with a community. 

Another Christchurch hip-hop 

and summit artist, Jamal Willis, 

aka Leejun, said he used to draw 

pictures and write rap lyrics 

in class as a way of expressing 

himself. 

His cousin, hip-hop artist 

‘Sun’ encouraged him to further 

pursue hip-hop for a livelihood 

after seeing his cousin’s talent. 

He left high school before 

completing NCEA Level 2 and 

found work with Te Ora Hou 

Ōtautahi’s youth centre, which 

helped motivate him to produce 

his own hip hop. 

“I want young people to know

that if they put their heart and 

their mind to their dreams, they 

can achieve it. 

“I’m trying to be a living

Hop Summit is a free event 

and will run for a week with 

performances based at Tūranga 

Library. 

It is modelled on the original 

Aotearoa Hip Hop Summit 

organised by DJ Ali and DJ Sir- 

Vere which began in Auckland 

in 2001. 

‘Share the knowledge’ 

workshops will be held for 

beatboxing, graffiti, MCing, beat 

making, songwriting and spoken 

word, urban choreography and 

breakdancing. All workshops 

require registration.

St Thomas’ dream run puts 

them in the big league

ST THOMAS of Canterbury 

College completed a dream 

New Zealand secondary schools 

rugby league campaign by 

claiming the national title in 

their first-ever finals appearance 

on Saturday. 

They beat St Paul’s College 

(Auckland) 12-6 in a thrilling final 

to go through the three-day 

tournament unbeaten. 

It was also the first time a 

school outside of Auckland had 

lifted the trophy since 2000. 

A large number of St Thomas’ 

supporters were on the sidelines 

for their second clash against 

St Paul’s of the tournament at 

Bruce Pulman Park, Auckland. 

St Thomas’ were first to score 

in the final, and followed it up 

with another try shortly after. 

Despite trailing early, St Paul’s 

managed to dot down for one 

of their own before the halftime 

break to close the gap to 10-6. 

A hard-fought battle followed 

in the second half, with both 

sides unable to score due to 

some impressive defence. 

However, St Thomas’ extended 

their lead with a penalty kick 

after a high tackle by St Paul’s. 

The two points would go on to 

be the only points added to the 

halftime score, and enough for 

St Thomas’ to claim the national 

title for the first time. 

St Thomas’ had only managed 

to make the semi-finals twice 

before this year, but never the 

final.

Patricia Paul, the Director, and Principal of 

Studio One Performing Arts has been teaching 

dance in Christchurch for over 25 years. Some 

of her former students are international singing 

star Hayley Westenra, Kase Craig, soloist with 

Ballet de National in Bordeaux France, Sacha 

Copeland from the Java Dance Company and 

Marysa Dalton who was with the 

Royal New Zealand Ballet. 

Patricia herself trained with the 

Royal Academy of Dancing in Bristol 

from 5 to 15 years of age and then 

went on to London where she danced 

with the prestigious Ballet Rambert. 

She has also performed with the 

Athens Ballet Theatre, William Carter, 

Serge Keaton, Ruth Meyer, Afshin 

Moffid and Aime Deligniere to name 

a few. Before moving to New Zealand 

Patricia taught in many countries and 

in many different Dance Companies 

including the American Festival Ballet, 

The Athens Ballet Theatre and Studio 

C in Los Angeles. 

Studio One Performing Arts have

and teach Classical Ballet from 3 years 

old, Jazz and Musical Theatre from 7 

years and Contemporary from 11 years

Spring might be here, but Steph Peirce gets creative 

with late-season winter meals 

Winter slaw with toasted seeds & 

creamy tahini lemon dressing 

Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan 

Serves 6 

Slaw 

¼ green cabbage 

½ broccoli 

1 green apple 

1 handful mint or parsley, roughly 

chopped 

½ cup currants 

⅓ cup apple cider vinegar (or other kind 

of vinegar) 

¼ cup boiling water 

½ cup seeds – sunflower or pumpkin 

1 tsp cumin seeds 

1 tbsp olive oil 

¼ bag rocket leaves (30-40g) 

Dressing 

⅓ cup hulled tahini 

⅓ cup lemon juice (2 lemons) 

¼ cup olive oil 

1 clove garlic, crushed 

¼ cup cold water 

¾ tsp sea salt 

Method 

• In a small bowl combine currants, 

apple cider vinegar and boiling water. Set 

aside to absorb. 

• Place a large frying pan on medium 

heat. Once hot, lightly toast the seeds and 

cumin seeds with olive oil for 4-5 minutes, 

tossing often. 

• In a small jar, combine all of the 

dressing ingredients, secure the lid tightly, 

and shake very well to combine. 

• Finely shred cabbage and broccoli and 

transfer to a large bowl. 

• Grate the apple and add to the 

cabbage. 

• Strain the currants and add to the 

shredded salad along with the chopped 

herbs, rocket and toasted seeds and mix 

with clean hands or tongs to combine. 

• Pour half of the dressing over the salad 

and toss to combine, add more as desired. 

• Transfer salad to a large serving plate 

and serve alongside slow cooked meats, 

barbecues or with any winter meal. 

Note 

If you wish to use this salad across 2-3 

days, leave dressing out and add as needed 

to your salad daily. 

Curried pumpkin & moong dahl 

soup 

Gluten-free, dairy-free 

Serves 6 

Ingredients 

3 tbsp coconut oil 

½ leek, finely diced 

2 celery stalks, finely diced 

1½ Tbsp crushed ginger (6cm knob) 

3 large garlic cloves, crushed 

1 tsp cumin seeds 

1 tsp black mustard seeds 

1 tsp turmeric 

½ tsp chilli flakes 

1 generous Tbsp mild curry powder 

¼ pumpkin (700g), with skin removed 

and deseeded, cut into 2cm cubes 

1 cup moong dahl* (washed and drained) 

1 litre (4 cups) of hot chicken stock or 

bone broth 

1 cup coconut cream 

400ml can of diced tomatoes 

1½ Tbsp runny honey 

Juice of 1 lemon 

Salt and pepper to taste 

Method 

• Heat a large saucepan 

on medium to low heat. Add 2 

tablespoons of coconut oil. Once melted, 

add the diced leeks and celery, and sauté 

for 10-15 minutes until translucent and 

tender. 

• Scrape the cooked leeks and celery 

to the edges of the pot and add the 

remaining coconut oil to the centre of the 

pot with ginger, garlic, cumin seeds and 

black mustard seeds, stirring the spices 

in the middle for 2 minutes to ignite the 

flavours. 

• Add turmeric and chilli flakes to the 

pot and mix everything together. Cook 

for a minute before adding the remaining 

ingredients except honey and lemon juice. 

• Reduce heat to low and simmer for 40 

minutes. 

• Stir in the lemon juice and honey. 

Season well with salt and pepper to taste. 

• Serve with coconut yoghurt or 

unsweetened yoghurt and a drizzle of 

chilli oil. 

Note 

Moong Dahl is available at Indian 

grocers, specialty supermarkets and some 

international aisles. Or, you could use 

yellow split peas.
