ST THOMAS of Canterbury 

College completed a dream New 

Zealand secondary schools rugby 

league campaign by claiming the 

national title in their first-ever 

finals appearance on Saturday. 

They beat St Paul’s College 

(Auckland) 12-6 in a thrilling 

final to go through the three-day 

tournament unbeaten. 

It was also the first time a 

school outside of Auckland had 

lifted the trophy since 2000.

have been working hard to 

fundraise for the Matatiki 

Hornby Centre hydrotherapy 

pool and they have now been 

given a helping hand. 

The New Zealand 

Community Trust has donated 

a grant of $400,000 for the pool 

which is set to open alongside 

a library and customer service 

hub, an aquatic centre 

with a lane pool, spa pool, 

toddlers’ wet play area and 

learn-to-swim pool set to early 

next year. 

The city council agreed to 

provide $2.5 million for the 

hydrotherapy 

pool, with the 

balance of $1.4 

million 

currently being 

raised by the 

Hornby Rotary 

Club and the Marc Duff 

Greater Hornby 

Residents 

Association. 

Association head of special 

projects Marc Duff said they 

applied for the grant to help 

them bring the benefits of 

hydrotherapy to Hornby. 

“We’re absolutely thrilled with 

the generous grant we received. 

It has really put a buzz in the 

community,” he said.

Bidding war for quake-damaged home

home that needs earthquake 

repairs has sold under the 

hammer for $597,000, stunning 

both the trustees and agents. 

Half a dozen property traders 

battled it out for the threebedroom, 

one-bathroom home on 

Glenmore Ave at the Harcourts 

Gold auction, with the eventual 

sale price exceeding the property’s 

RV of $580,000. 

Harcourts Gold agent Debbie 

Soper said the auction was a 

“cracker”. 

“For an ‘as is, where is’ in Casebrook, 

which we all sort of saw as 

being in the $400,000s, $597,000 

was just nuts,” she said. 

The bidding opened at 

$220,000, but most had dropped 

out by the time it reached the high 

$400,000s, she said. 

The auctioneer announced the 

property as being on the market 

at $500,000 and, by the time the 

bidding reached $540,000, there 

were just two buyers left. 

“Two people were really, really 

fighting it out and trying to get rid 

of the other one, and they both 

just hung in there as long as they 

could and the underbidder just 

couldn’t. 

“It got to the stage where it just 

didn’t make sense,” said Soper. 

The property was located down 

a long shared driveway, making 

access to the large 1123sq m section 

tricky, she said. 

It was in “original and raw” 

condition and even the toilet seat 

was missing. 

Some wanted to do up the 

property and resell it, while 

others saw potential in developing 

the land or adding a second 

dwelling. One bidder only 

viewed the property minutes 

before the auction and entered 

the room just as the bidding 

kicked off. 

“Not everybody wanted to 

develop that section either, most 

people were looking to repair the 

house, update it, and put it back 

on the market. 

“But the margin will be pretty 

slim to do that at that level, so 

you’ve got to make the section 

work really.” 

The trustees who put the 

property on the market after the 

elderly owner moved into a rest 

home three months ago were at 

the auction. 

Said Soper: “The trustees could 

tell this was insane . . . they held 

their poker faces really well.” 

She said the sale price was 

higher than recent sales on 

nearby Farrington Ave, where repaired 

properties in better condition 

and zoned for the desirable 

Burnside High School have gone 

for prices in the mid-$500,000s. 

A three-bedroom, onebathroom 

home with only 

an “as is, where is” garage 

on Farrington Ave sold for 

$565,000 in February, while a 

neighbouring property on the 

same street, which had been 

repaired, went for $550,000 in 

June. She said “as is, where is” 

properties “go really well” and 

the market overall is gaining 

momentum on the back of a 

steady winter. 

“I said to someone: ‘They are 

always selling for as much as 

the repaired properties at the 

moment. But it depends on what 

it is and where it is as well’. 

“To be fair having the big 

section was an enticer, but for 

most people they couldn’t make

hydrotherapy pool to the centre 

will have a huge impact on a lot 

of people in the community and 

surrounding areas.

or recovering 

from injuries,”

Hydrotherapy involves the 

use of warm water for pain 

relief, relaxation and a range 

of treatments. The water 

temperature is usually between 

33-36°C, warmer than swimming 

pools which are typically kept at 

26-28°C. 

Hornby resident Angela 

Swinney said she is excited about 

using the pool after having had a 

recent heart attack. 

“The pool will enable me to 

do gentle exercise in a safe and 

supervised setting. I’m very 

proud of the greater Hornby 

community for all the hard 

mahi it put into making the 

hydrotherapy pool happen,” she 

said. 

Around the site, the brick 

work for the pool changing 

rooms and plant room have been 

progressing steadily and will be 

completed in the next few weeks. 

Currently the city council 

team are working on procuring 

furniture like couches, desks and 

chairs for the library and other 

gear for the site.

Biggest fashion show yet at Hub

THE ANNUAL Hub Hornby 

fashion show is set to be the 

biggest yet. 

Senior centre manager Jason 

Marsden said the fashion show, 

which was first held in 2019, 

will feature 13 runways and 119 

models, compared to about 70 

models last year. 

“It is massive this year. It has 

just grown and grown and gotten 

bigger every year,” he said. 

The show on September 14 will 

starts at 7pm and will be free to 

attend. About 200 VIP tickets 

are available which include a seat 

and goodie bag. 

Marsden said the whole 

community, from young people 

to seniors, will be represented on 

stage. 

“It not only features spring 

and summer fashion for the 

upcoming season from our 

fashion retailers, but the models 

are drawn from staff, friends, 

family and customers. 

“It represents and supports 

diversity, as well as the 

community we serve.” 

He said the show aims to get 

the community talking about it 

and wanting to come along. 

“There is such a positive energy 

with the fashion show that you 

do not get at traditional runway 

shows. 

“For us it is about recognising 

and celebrating people in our 

community who do so much for 

others.” 

The Hub also called for people 

to nominate someone they 

know to get a makeover as part 

of its Proud to Be initiative. 

The winners will get a $1000 

makeover and a full styling 

experience during the show.

St Thomas’ dominate 

national schools squad

A large number of St Thomas’ supporters 

were on the sidelines for their second clash 

against St Paul’s of the tournament at 

Bruce Pulman Park, Auckland. 

St Thomas’ were first to score in the 

final, and followed it up with another try 

shortly after. 

Despite trailing early, St Paul’s managed 

to dot down for one of their own before the 

halftime break to close the gap to 10-6. 

A hard-fought battle followed in the 

second half, with both sides unable to 

score due to some impressive defence. 

However, St Thomas’ extended their lead 

with a penalty kick after a high tackle by 

St Paul’s. 

The two points would go on to be the 

only points added to the halftime score, 

and enough for St Thomas’ to claim the 

national title for the first time. 

St Thomas’ had only managed to make 

the semi-finals twice before this year, but 

never the final. 

But in 2023, St Thomas’ form was 

evident not only in their results but also 

their dominance in the national secondary 

schools squad selected following the 

tournament. 

The school boasts nine players in the 

19-strong squad set to play in a fixture 

against the NZ Clubs squad on Labour 

weekend next month. 

Haeata Community Campus was the 

only other Christchurch school in any 

of the four tournaments last week. They 

finished 11th in the boys’ championship 

grade.

St Margaret’s qualify for nationals 

after South Island schools final

AN EXTRA-TIME thriller saw 

St Margaret’s College go down 

to Columba College in the 

South Island secondary schools 

netball final. 

St Margaret’s had a dominant 

tournament in Invercargill 

and have now qualified for 

the New Zealand secondary 

schools tournament in 

Auckland, which starts on 

October 3, after the 30-28 

loss. Christchurch Girls’ High 

(third), St Andrew’s College 

(fourth) and Villa Maria 

College (fifth) also clinched 

spots at next month’s New 

Zealand tournament by 

finishing in the top five. 

But for St Margaret’s, who 

were last year’s national 

finalists, the final loss was 

a disappointing end to the 

tournament. 

They recorded an impressive 

307 goals across their first six 

games while conceding just 133. 

St Margaret’s met rivals St 

Andrew’s in their third playoff 

match in two weeks in the 

semi-final, which the red-andwhites 

won 43-31. 

St Margaret’s looked like 

winning the final last Thursday 

after taking a 13-5 lead in the 

first quarter. Goal attack Ivy 

Brown was a standout, injecting 

energy on attack and defence in 

the first half. 

Despite a number of 

opportunities for Columba, St 

Margaret’s managed to hold on 

to a 19-14 lead at halftime. 

Clean intercepts gained 

them plenty of turnovers on 

defence, but unforced errors 

saw St Margaret’s take 2min to 

get their first goal of the third 

period. 

St Margaret’s had possibly 

their lowest quarter score of the 

season with just six goals. 

But for much of the final 

quarter, St Margaret’s held onto 

their slim lead. 

Then Columba soared to a 

28-27 lead with 36sec to go on 

the clock. St Margaret’s were 

able to keep their cool, with 

Brown netting a goal to even 

the match. But it wasn’t to be 

for St Margaret’s in extra-time. 

They were unable to add to 

their score, while Columba 

went in front by two for the first 

time in the game. 

Meanwhile, CGHS faced St 

Andrew’s to decide third place. 

CGHS were reeling from a 

44-17 loss to Columba, and

ST ANDREW’S College’s 

senior A girls basketball team 

have qualified for next month’s 

nationals after winning back-toback 

AA premier schools South 

Island titles. 

They met rivals Rangiora 

High in the final of the threeday 

tournament at Dunedin, 

winning 73-54. It came a week 

after the two teams faced off in 

the Canterbury secondary 

schools final – which St Andrew’s 

also won. 

Year 13 student Lauren 

Whittaker was once again 

immense for St Andrew’s in a 

final, scoring 20 points. 

St Andrew’s progressed to the 

South Island final after dominant 

wins over Nayland College 

(90-22) and Avonside Girls’ 

High (85-33) in pool play. They 

beat Columba College 75-58 in 

the quarter-final before beating 

Kaiapoi High 82-41 in their 

semi-final. 

St Margaret’s College also 

secured a spot at nationals, 

which takes place in Palmerston 

North from September 25-30, 

after finishing third. They beat 

Kaiapoi 82-64 in the third-place 

playoff following a 65-48 loss to 

Rangiora. 

Christchurch Girls’ High lost 

83-66 to Columba in the playoff 

for fifth, but sixth-place nabbed 

them a spot at nationals.

Amarok, the German sibling of 

the latest Ford Ranger and an 

interesting alternative to one of 

our best selling Utes. 

This model-sharing arrangement 

between two of the heavy 

hitters of the car world, one hailing 

from North America and the 

other Europe, is an interesting 

alliance and precursor to other 

models expected to spawn. 

Unlike the current all conquering 

third generation Ranger 

current armed with something 

for everyone; a 15 strong line-up, 

comprising 2WD and 4WD versions, 

and the choice of single, 

super, and double cab body 

styles. By contrast the Amarok 

is more of niche market dabbler 

operating off the back of a modest 

four-model line-up, all double 

cabs and 4WD. Prices start at 

$65,000 for the Life and peak 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

at $90,000 for the Aventura V6 

turbo diesel. 

Even the price leading $65,000 

Life is an attractive package, 

powered, albeit meekly, by a 2.0L 

125kW turbo diesel that develops

This is just some of the back 

room technical magic that conjures 

up such an ultra smooth 

and responsive motor delivering 

a memorable on and off road 

driving experience. Whatever 

is thrown its way is dealt with 

effortlessly like few other diesel 

Utes I’ve driven. The 10-speed 

automatic is the perfect match for 

this strong and more vibrant V6, 

with its quick and intuitive gear 

changes. 

The well-appointed and finished 

passenger compartment is 

noticeably larger than its aging 

predecessor, with the biggest, 

and soon to be most appreciated, 

improvement is the amount of 

additional rear leg and headroom. 

There’s a classy, modern 

and quality European feel that 

permeates into almost every 

corner of the test Ute. This gives 

the Volkswagen an important 

point of difference over its blue 

oval-badged sibling. 

The way this sizeable Ute glides 

through corners with poise and 

balance is a credit to the team 

who designed and developed it. 

Ride comfort is outstanding both 

on road and off the beaten track. 

During my limited and less than 

intrepid off-road excursions, the 

test vehicle was surprisingly at 

ease and took every opportunity 

to show off its formidable 4WD 

abilities. This is a more than worthy 

replacement for the outgoing 

Amarok. It’s a huge step forward, 

thanks to Ford.
