Dad tragically killed before he could
see son named in NZ Schools squad

WHEN SHAUN Kempton
pulls on the black jersey for
the first time, he knows his
father would have been proud.
The Rolleston College
student has been selected in
the New Zealand Schools’
rugby squad to play the
Barbarians on September
23 and two matches against
Australia the following week.
It has been an
overwhelming year for the
Selwyn Schools captain who
achieved his goal of making
the squad after his father
Dave was tragically killed in
April. Dave died outside a
Blenheim BP station in what
is being investigated as a work
place incident. Kempton, 17,
said his dad was the reason
he started playing rugby in
Invercargill when he was 3.

proud.
“Dad was always a big
rugby fella. He was the kind
of guy who was down at the
clubrooms from nine o’clock.

Proud because he had
worked very hard to get to a
key point in his rugby career;
sad because his father Dave
wasn’t here to hear it.

AN INCREASE in youth
being harassed after school has
prompted Selwyn Community
Patrol to increase daytime
coverage.
The patrol which covers the
areas around Lincoln, Prebbleton
and Leeston has started to
reintroduce the daytime patrols
which had been stopped due to a
lack of members.
Acting patrol chair Micheal
Englebrecht said they have
noticed more people raising
issues on social media.
The most recent was an
incident in Prebbleton where
a 12-year-old was thrown to
the ground and kicked by four
teenagers unknown to him on
Blakes Rd last Monday.
Englebrecht said incidents like
this one were one of the reasons
for bringing the daytime patrols
back.
He said the patrol’s presence
can act as a deterrant and they
are also able to report anything
they see to police.
Englebrecht hoped being
visibly parked outside the schools
with their patrol car would deter
people from doing anything
wrong.
At the start of the year, the
patrol’s volunteer numbers took
a dip, meaning they only focused
on their nighttime patrols,
sacrificing their daytime patrols.
He said an increase in
volunteers has allowed the patrol
to focus on the daytime patrols,
which for now are running two

to grow the numbers over the
last six months, and we’ve had
quite a good response. We have
increased by 21 new patrollers.

CAR FIRES IN LINCOLN
Two abandoned car fires near Tai
Tapu kept the Lincoln Volunteer
Fire Brigade busy over the
weekend. The brigade was called
out at 10pm on Saturday on Golf
Links Rd. The second callout
was 24 hours later at 10pm on
Sunday on MacArtneys Rd. Police
responded to the second fire and
a spokesperson confirmed the car
was stolen.
LIQUORLAND BREAK IN
Liquorland Lincoln was broken
into around 3am on Thursday.
A police spokesperson said
three people are believed to have
entered on foot and then fled the
scene in a vehicle. The car was
located abandoned on Riccarton
Rd, with police unable to locate
the offenders. The store declined
to comment.

Plate warmer cause of bar and

A PLATE warmer has been
narrowed down as the cause
of the fire that left a Lincoln
restaurant with significant
damage.
The Black Door Bar and Eatery
had fire rip through the building
in the early hours of August 26.
Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade
responded to the call along with
other crews from Rolleston and
Christchurch.
Specialist fire investigator
Mike Gaskin said the fire was
accidental.
The plate warmer, which had
been in place for a number of
years, had dried out the timber
around it, making it more likely
to catch fire.
Gaskin said either the plate
warmer had an electrical failure
causing the dry timbers around
it to ignite or the timbers selfignited
from residual heat.
Gaskin said if it was the
timbers it would have taken
several years to happen.
“It dries timbers out to a point
where they blacken and begin
to charcoal which makes them
easier to burn.”
He said the damage inside the

A LARGE shed fire at a flower
farm on Saturday was likely
caused by an electrical failure.
Volunteer fire crews from
across the district were called to
Hadstock Farm on Corbetts Rd,
Springston, at 3am.
Rolleston chief fire officer
Cam Kenyon said the shed was
fully alight when crews arrived.
“The fire was probably about
20m by 30m. It was well ablaze,”
he said.
The Rolleston brigade was
backed up by crews from
Burnham, Lincoln, Dunsandel,
Leeston, and Wigram, which
remained on the scene until
about 7.30am.
Kenyon said they focused on
stopping the fire from spreading
to other nearby structures.
Hadstock Farm sits on about
125ha and grows spring bulbs
and flowers.
Owners John and Cynthia
Chamberlain said, despite the
fire, the farm is still operating as
normal. John said the
shed contained a range of
items, including a large
number of daffodil bulbs, farm
vehicles, and classic cars – all
of which were destroyed in the
fire.
John thanked the fire crews
who responded to the call.
Specialist fire investigator
Jonathan Ditmer said the
damage was too bad to narrow
down the exact cause but it was
likely caused by an electrical
failure.

A huge crowd packed out
the Lincoln Event Centre for
the annual CultureFest event.
There was a large variety of
food, craft stalls and performers
showcasing their culture in the
event centre and outside on the
Lincoln Domain. Crowds enjoyed
everything from Bulgarian food to
Indian saris and kapa haka. This
year was the first time some stalls
were held inside the event centre
with the crowds enjoying the
ability for break out spaces such as
the desert lounge, karaoke room
and silent disco.

Skate park users
‘upset’ over age limit

PARENTS AND caregivers
have questioned why an age
restriction has been placed
on a Darfield skate park.
The new sign at the
Westview Reserve Skate
Park, which opened in July,
states children under-8
should not use it.
People shared their
concerns over the rule on
the Darfield community
Facebook page.
One wrote: “8 years+?
My boys will be so upset
we are there nearly every
weekend and days after
school. They’re 4 and 5.”
Another said: “I’ve
always taken the grandies
there and have found the
majority of older ones are
only too willing to teach
them a thing or two.”
There has been no
incidents at the skate park
involving children under-8.
District council head

perceived a bit better and
the (board) accepted that.”
The board agreed to
communicate the need for
consistent rules on signs
with district councillors in
the future.

the masquerade ball charity
fundraising event hosted by the
Rolleston Rotary Club was a
night to remember.
Set against the backdrop of
Rolleston College, the evening
unfolded into a magical affair
that combined elegance,
philanthropy, and a whole
lot of fun, said rotary club
spokesperson Kate Webb.
A vibrant tapestry of colours
and costumes flooded the venue
as more than 220 guests arrived
in an array of disguises.
“The culinary offerings
surpassed all expectations,
thanks to the exceptional talents
of the college’s hospitality
students. With meticulous
attention to detail, they crafted
an absolute feast,” said Webb.
Local cocktails and other
drinks added a touch of
merriment to the festivities
thanks to Rolleston-based
Longshot Distillery.

Volunteers put more than 1200
hours into the event.

Council
seeks
feedback
RESIDENTS are being given the
opportunity to have their say on
shaping the future of the district
as part of the 2024-2034 Long-
Term Plan.
Online surveys will be available
over the next three weeks for
residents to share their priorities
regarding what they would like
the district council to focus on for
developing the future of Selwyn.
Following a month of focus
groups held by the council, the
next stage of collating feedback
will involve an interactive scavenger
hunt - the first of its kind for
councils in Aotearoa - developed
by digital agency Publica. Residents
can follow the clues, give
their views and enter the draw to
win a money-can’t-buy experience,
supported by local businesses
in the Rolleston area.
This is part of the council’s
commitment to ensuring the
whole district is heard and finding
new ways to support community
engagement.
The online surveys are now
available at yoursay.selwyn.govt.
nz and from Saturday residents
can scan the QR codes around
Rolleston Town Centre to follow
the trail. The feedback period will
be open until October 2.

Beaton says the best cakes are
those made with love and a close
eye on the regulations.
‘‘The golden rule is reading
the instructions. If it says eight
inches square (20.32cm²) then it
better had be, right down to the
last millimetre.’’

many cakes disqualified simply
because the fine print on the
judging sheet hadn’t been read.

‘Council should reverse decision or resign’

councillors’ decision to
approve the District Plan,
rendering the appeal
against Plan Change 69
null and void, allowing
the controversial Lincoln
South development to
go ahead
It is with complete disbelief
and disappointment that I
learnt of the council’s decision
to incorporate PC69 into the
District Plan.
It contradicted the council’s
legal advice given to those who
objected, of whom I was one,
to proceed to the Environment
Court. Why is the council now
not following its own advice and
allowing the hearing to proceed?
It is inexcusable that some
councillors didn’t know the
implications of their decision
and that the mayor didn’t expect
them to know.
At the very least, the council
should reverse their decision
or resign, as there is now a lack
of trust in their transparency
and integrity. They have not
acted in the best interest of their
constituents. I don’t think a
swimming pool as suggested by
councillor Grant Miller is any
compensation for poor process
and decision-making. It will

not compensate for the loss of
productive soils. Surely there
are more innovative options.

trust our elected officials with

question.

What a disgrace to have only
six councillors making those
decisions. It was clearly done
to rush through the plan to
avoid having to be responsible
for protecting our valuable

false rhetoric they spewed prior
to the local body elections about
working for the communities
to make Selwyn a great place to
live. I hope people remember
who these councillors are to
ensure they never get voted back
on in the next elections. I put
forward a vote of no confidence
in our elected council.

‘Mum cried after I got the call’

coach, more of a bloke that stood
on the sidelines,” Kempton said.
“But he was a big mentor for
me, and has definitely helped me
get to where I am now.”
Kempton’s mum Nichola and
sister Olivia are also heavily
involved in the sport. Nichola
was the Selwyn Schools manager
this year, while Olivia managed
the Lincoln-Rolleston combined
team.
Said Kempton: “(Rugby’s)
always been a part of the family.
I think mum cried after I got the
call.”
The hooker is the first Rolleston
College student to be selected in
the NZ Schools side. He is also
believed to be the second Selwyn
Schools player to make the team
after Crusaders back Wil Gualter
was selected in 2019.
With a Crusaders Academy
spot already secured for next
year, Kempton is hoping to progress
through the ranks.
“Next season a focus will be on
making Canterbury under-19s
and Crusaders under-20s,” he
said.
“In three to five years, I’d
love to make my NPC debut at
whatever province takes me, then
Super Rugby and every Kiwi’s big
dream of one day playing for the
All Blacks.”
Kempton is hoping to play for
a Christchurch premier club side

next season. He made his debut

“So if playing prems in (the
city) is an option, then that’s what
I’ll do.”
Although Kempton is not sure
what club he will play for, it is
likely he will be in demand following
his standout season with
Selwyn. There were no camps
or trials for the NZ Schools side,
and Kempton was selected on his
Miles Toyota Premiership form.
He aims to continue improving
over the three weeks with NZ
Schools.
“I’m just hoping to get more
knowledge of the game,” he said.
“There’s always things to work
on in my game, so it’s just about
putting my best foot forward.”

DOMINANT second halves
from Ellesmere’s under-16
and under-18s saw both sides
record high-scoring wins on
Saturday.
The under-16s beat North
Otago 41-36 in a hard-fought
battle to kick start their South
Island tournament, while the
under-18s comfortably beat
South Canterbury 36-15 in
Sheffield.
It was the first of three
matches for the under-16s who
are competing in the Central
South pool of the South Island
under-16 tournament.
With the score locked at 24-24
at halftime, the under-16s came
out strong and scored two more
tries to win the game.
They face South Canterbury
in Timaru this Saturday at
11am before taking on Mid
Canterbury at Prebbleton

Southbridge start UK tour

SOUTHBRIDGE have opened
the first leg of their United
Kingdom rugby tour in London,
and were set to face Sidcup in
their first of three matches this
morning.
A 30-player squad will play
three matches over three weeks
in England, Scotland and
Northern Ireland. There are
eight management staff and 39
supporters with them.
The results of this morning’s
match against London-based
Sidcup can be found on the
club’s Facebook page.
Club manager Chris McMillan
said the club hasn’t done
anything of this magnitude
before.
“It’s been a long project over a
number of years and a lot of hard
work has gone on,” he said.
McMillan said it provides the
experience of an international
tour to players who might not
make representative teams and,
for some players, it will be their
first trip outside of the country.
The amount of support from
the community and nationwide
has been immense, with local
businesses offering fundraising
opportunities or coming on
board through sponsorship.

players swapped a Sunday rest
day for fundraising work at local
businesses to keep their travel
costs down.
McMillan said the cost of
putting together a tour of this
size had been a big project. He
was proud of the team for their
fundraising and saving efforts.
“The club hasn’t paid for
them to go. They’ve done it all
themselves, and the sponsors
have been fantastic with helping
out by providing and sponsoring
the kit for the tour.”
While sponsorship and
fundraising have been vital in
transporting the team overseas,
McMillan said he never
anticipated the willingness of the
Southbridge community to join
the trip in support.
“The supporters side of it
has actually blown me away,”
McMillan said, getting over
double the supporters he
expected.
Tour captains Luke Palmer
and James Coull said it’s special
to see the community getting
behind the tour.
“The culture and the
community are second to none
here. The proof is in the pudding
and it’s all come together which
is pretty cool.”
Palmer said he’s thrilled about
taking the trip of a lifetime with
his team.
“Experiencing that with all
those boys is something we will
cherish for the rest of our lives
and playing careers. I couldn’t be
more excited to do it with them.”
Over the years, Southbridge
has hosted players from Sidcup,
City of Armagh and Melrose (the
three teams the tour will visit),
making it easy for McMillan
to maintain relationships with
those clubs.

staying on to
play for Melrose
and others for
their OEs.
Players Jack Dawson and
Bruno Lambert will be staying
to play for Melrose following the
tour’s end, before returning to
Southbridge for the next year’s
rugby season. A few others will
be staying on for long-term
overseas experiences.
The tour begins the lead-up to
Southbridge’s 150th anniversary
celebration in 2026.

their second match next
Wednesday morning (NZT)
before playing Scotland’s
Melrose on September 26.

White Sox squad who travelled
to Kansas City, Missouri,

Gun tournament. She
was also part of
the Canterbury
under-17 team who won the national
championships

This exposure has equipped the
Junior White Sox players with
the experience and confidence
needed to excel on the
international stage.”
Shaw, who is a former White
Sox captain and Olympian,

appointed assistant Carley Ratu.
The qualifiers will be played
from November 5-7.

Selwyn series From the People launched
Our extraordinary heritage, people and iconic places in Waikirikiri Selwyn have
been highlighted in a local short film series.
The series, From the People, was commissioned to celebrate Selwyn’s heritage,
people, and iconic places. It will be promoted through tourism campaigns and
other outlets.
Each film focuses on a different part of the district, including Arthur’s Pass,
Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere, Lake Coleridge, and Kura Tawhiti/Castle Hill.
The series is part of a shift towards weaving more of people’s stories through the
narrative and destination brand for the district, Council Executive Director
— Community Services and Facilities Denise Kidd says.
“There were several key partnerships involved in creating this series including the
Department of Conservation, Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga and Te Taumutu Rūnanga.
It was a powerful way to acknowledge the unique and special places we have in
Selwyn and people’s connection to them.”
A screening of the films at Te Ara Ātea at the end of August was well received by
attendees, Denise says.
“People from the areas that feature in the series introduced the films and spoke about
why these places were so special to them, and what it meant to be part of the project.
The filmmaker also spoke about the importance of the project to him and people’s
hospitality and warmth.”
Council Principal Advisor Economic Development Shay Robinson says each film
highlights different themes and will resonate with visitors and people wanting to learn
more about the history and communities of the district.
“Some feature intergenerational perspectives on how a place has shaped families and
their upbringings, or why people settled in these places. Others show perspectives of
local business owners and their passion for welcoming visitors, as well as highlighting
places of significance to mana whenua,” she says. “Stories like these are crucial for
building community connection and creating a sense of pride and belonging.”

Business conditions looking positive
in Selwyn
Selwyn businesses have reported feeling more optimistic about the future
and current business conditions than their nationwide counterparts, in the
latest Selwyn Business Survey.
The twice-yearly survey, which Council has been running for three years,
captures valuable information for businesses and those involved in
supporting the Selwyn business community. Results provide insights into
how local businesses think they are faring and what their outlook for the
next several months is.
The survey, which ran from 25 July–15 August, attracted 121 responses
and found that overall, local businesses expected conditions to continue
improving, including profitability and investment intentions. Businesses
also reported carrying more staff and planning to increase their number of
employees, although recruiting staff was continuing to be difficult.
Other notable results include output/sales continuing to rise steadily over
the last 12 months, with 27% of businesses expecting this to increase.
Operating costs were continuing to remain high, with 92% of businesses
experiencing increases. However, the outlook for the next six months sees
this reducing to 75%. Businesses pricing intentions were also steady and
decreasing slowly from a high of 58% in February 2023.
Results from the survey were presented to businesses during a sold out
Selwyn Business Breakfast at Te Ara Ātea last week by Economist Benje
Patterson. They are available to view on the Selwyn District Council website.
Thrilling tales of mysterious events
A tale of modern warfare colliding with an infamous World War One battle,
and the day of a nurse besieged by strange interactions have won out, as
creative Selwyn writers put their skills to the test.
More than 30 writers took part in the Selwyn Libraries’ Adults’ Short Stories
competition from 1 June to 31 July where entrants submitted an unpublished
story of less than 5000 words.
The competition unearthed several compelling and entertaining writers

“We were very impressed with the variety and quality of stories entered.”
Nina Atkinson won first prize for her intriguing story, Dragon of the
Somme, which followed a British soldier’s diary account of being saved by
a 21st century attack helicopter at the WW1 Battle of the Somme.
“The premise of exploring how someone from that period would interpret a
piece of modern technology was something I had a lot of fun writing about,”
says Nina. “He describes what he saw without knowing what a helicopter is
so it’s a really interesting perspective.”
Nina is an avid writer who is currently working on editing the first draft of
her debut novel — part of a planned sci-fi series.
Runner-up, Rachel Horne impressed the judges with her creative story of
a nurse who finds herself having increasingly odd interactions with her
colleagues on her morning shift after taking a sleeping tablet for the first
time the night before.
“I wrote the story in the midst of my third burnout during nine years of
nursing,” she said. “I drew on common issues nurses face in their day-to-day
practice such as high workloads and lack of time — reflected by the
relentless ticking of the watch. I wanted to touch on some of these issues
in a light-hearted, comical way.”
The competition was judged by a panel of four people from Selwyn’s
different libraries, who scored each story based on character, plot, theme,
setting, mechanics, and quality.

Rural township offers
attractive lifestyle
The fast-growing Selwyn District includes several
rural townships where residents enjoy a more
relaxed lifestyle, a community vibe and the benefits
of being closer to the natural environment.
One such township is Leeston, which offers not
only those advantages, but also a thriving retail
centre, entertainment and dining options together
with excellent community facilities.
Recently developed sub-divisions are bringing in
new people too, who appreciate the more affordable
prices along with the attractive Leeston lifestyle.
Over the next few weeks, there are several events
being held across the Selwyn District, including
in Leeston. For example, as part of the districtwide
Culture Fest, a Celtic Fiddle Orchestra will
be entertaining visitors to the Leeston Library
with a lively programme of foot-tapping music on
Saturday, September 16, from 11am to 12 noon.
A Pepeha Workshop also being held at the
library this Saturday, September 16, will take place
from 1pm-3.30pm, where Tihirangi Brightwell
will be teaching participants (18+) how to form
and deliver a pepeha as well as other aspects of
Maori culture. Book through the Selwyn Libraries

For those who would like to extend their
creative skills, local artist Soon-Lee Spicer will be
teaching block-printing techniques at the library
on Saturday, October 21 from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Admission is $20 for library members and $40 for
non-members.
Of course, one of the key events Leeston hosts
is the Ellesmere A& P Show, which draws crowds
from across the Selwyn District. This year the
theme for the show is ‘Mooving Our Communities
Together’, which organisers say relates to the
positives that the dairy industry brings to
communities throughout the country. This year’s
president Jeff Wheeler is a long-time dairy farmer.
Other attractions include The BBQ Alliance
competition, Wearable Arts, Selwyn’s Got Talent,
and events around livestock, wood-chopping,
Highland dancing and the Top Team competition.
It’s a day out for the whole family, with all types
of animals from cattle to sheep, horses to alpaca,
on display. The highlight of the day is the Grand
Parade, where the champions will strut their stuff.
Arts and crafts and food displays and
demonstrations are all part of the event, too,
which this year is being held on Saturday,
October 14. Children under 12 are admitted free,
adult entry is $15, family pass is $40. Equestrian
events will take place on October 13-15.

The 35th annual Masters
Games will be held in Ōtepoti
Dunedin from February 3-11,
with an estimated 5,000+
people set to come together to
enjoy Aotearoa's largest annual
multi-sport event.
There are more than 60 sports
on offer during the Games and
there are new events to try
in 2024, including Pickleball,
Jigsaw Racing and Cowboy
Action Shooting. All sports are
open to people with disabilities
and some selected sports also
have para categories, such as
Archery, Athletics – Track and
Field, Petanque, Cornhole,
Darts, Power Lifting, Indoor
Rowing, Swimming and Indoor
Triathlon.
The goal of the Games is to
encourage participation in sport,
no matter your age or ability,
says New Zealand Masters
Games Manager Vicki Kestila.

or be an elite athlete to enter.
You just have to be the right
minimum age for your particular
event and be keen to have a
go. We have participants aged
18 to 96 and beyond – some

Battery care tips for optimal performance
There’s nothing worse than jumping in
the car, ready to start the day and realising
that your car’s battery is dead. It’s an
inconvenient yet common experience that
could easily be avoided. Proper car battery
care is essential to ensure it performs
reliably and has a longer lifespan. Here are
some valuable tips from Jones Road Autos

take care of your car battery:
1. Before turning off your engine, make
sure your radio and air conditioning are
switched off, and before leaving your
vehicle, check all lights (interior and
exterior) are off. MTA suggests that hybrid
and electric vehicles’ lights, radio and door
locks run off a 12-volt battery, so a flat
battery is still possible.
2. Inspect your car’s battery regularly, at
least once a month, to check for corrosion
on the terminals. Remove any corrosion
with a mixture of baking soda and water.
At your next service or WOF time, have
your battery’s state of health tested.
3. Ensure that battery connections at the
terminals are secure and tighten all loose
connections.
4. Car batteries typically have a 3-5
years lifespan, depending on usage and
maintenance; avoid a breakdown by
replacing your battery if it is nearing this
age or showing signs of deterioration.
5. Drive your vehicle regularly to help
keep the battery charged and at full
capacity. However, if you only do short
trips regularly, try to take your car on a
longer run monthly to extend the battery’s
lifespan. If your vehicle will be unused for
extended periods, remove the negative
battery connection or consider purchasing
a battery charger.
6. Check for signs you need to test or
replace your battery: slow, sluggish or hard
to start, dimming headlights, dashboard
warning lights, corrosion around the
battery terminal and unknown battery age.
7. Keep your car in a garage to protect
it from temperature extremes if possible.
Both hot and cold weather can affect
the battery’s ability to hold a charge and
shorten its lifespan.

Getting seedlings ready for spring
Vegetables
This month, a start can be made on
sowing the hardier vegetables, but the
likes of runner beans, pumpkins and corn
should be left until all likelihood of frost
has gone. However, these tender vegetables
can be started in seed trays in a glasshouse
or in a corner of the laundry.
To have peas over a long period, start
sowing them now and continue to sow
small amounts about once a fortnight.
Although broad beans can be sown, they
do not produce as well as those put down
in autumn and also seem more prone to
rust.
If you want potatoes for Christmas,
start planting early varieties (Jersey
Benne, Swift) and cover them until frost
danger has passed. Potatoes do best in a
rich, slightly acidic soil, so add no lime.
Compost, rotted turf and decayed lawn
clippings can be added to the soil, which
should be moist but well drained, so dig
as deeply as possible, without bringing
subsoil to the surface.
Maris Anchor is a useful early potato
that can be planted after Jersey Benne
for, as well as being used as a new potato,
Maris Anchor shaws can be left to mature
and older potatoes can be eaten mashed.
Using cloches enables seeds to be sown
about a month earlier than in the open
ground. Cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower
and silverbeet seedlings can be raised in
one large cloche with the ends closed up,
giving protection from sudden changes of
weather.
Shallots can be planted in rich soil and
a sunny site. Plant 20cm apart with 30cm
between rows.
Keep asparagus plots clear of weeds. As
soon as the first asparagus growths appear,
apply nitrate of soda (28g per sq/m)
or apply liquid manure at fortnightly
intervals.
A top dressing of blood and bone forked
lightly into the surface of the soil will
improve rhubarb stems.
Fruit
Prepare the greenhouse now for
tomatoes, capsicums and aubergines.
Wash the inside of the glass with a
disinfectant solution and if the tomatoes
are to be grown in the soil, rather than
pots or bags, replace the soil. Leave
the top of the greenhouse open until
planting begins. Material removed
from the greenhouse is excellent for the
vegetable garden or can be used to top up
flowerbeds.
Flowers
Sweet peas have been a popular garden
annual since first being introduced into
England at the end of the 17th century
and the original variety, Cupani, is still
available. A burst of hybridising at the end
of the 19th century and early 20th century
marked the development of the modern
sweet pea, particularly the Spencer types.
Dwarf sweet peas such as Bijou need
no staking, so can be grown in an open
area. Sow sweet pea seed outdoors in early
spring.
Chrysanthemum cuttings can be taken
now. Rooted pieces from the edges
of plants will develop quickly but
unrooted slips will soon root if placed
around the edge of a pot of sandy soil
and kept moist, not saturated.
Seedlings and cuttings that have
been grown under shelter since
autumn should now be hardened off.
Give them ventilation and expose
to full sunshine during the day but
keep them protected at night. Start
planting gladiolus corms from now
until early November, as staggering
planting will provide a succession of
flowers for picking.

Does Mazda’s 1.9-litre diesel turbo deliver?
MAZDA IS hoping for an uplift
in buyer interest in two of the
most affordable versions of its
BT-50 Ute, as it feels the sales
heat from a host fresh faced rivals
including the latest Ford Ranger.
Their response to this challenge
is a new 1.9 litre turbo-diesel
motor for its price leading 2WD
GSX and GTX double cabs, the
only body style offered here.
Can this motor, with its modest
engine capacity and power
output, add more spring to the
BT50’s sales step, which has been
a bit flat footed of late?
Let’s refresh your memory,
after all the latest BT50 has been
around since early 2021. Apart
from cosmetic differences, it is a
rebadged Isuzu D-Max. The two
companies signed up to a model
sharing arrangement, once
they parted company with their
previous model share partners
Ford and Holden.
Offering a 1.9 litre turbo diesel
gives the BT50 a major point of
difference over its rivals with
its low CO2 output of 205g/km.
Mazda claim it’s the lowest CO2
figure of any diesel double cab
Ute on our market. This means it
attracts a lower government clean
car fee than most of it rivals.
Many of them are feeling the
pain of higher fees that came into

force on 1 July, adding in many
instances anywhere between $5-
6k to the price of some models.
That’s a real affordability body
blow for several Utes compared
to the fee they faced pre-1 July.
There was the expected mad
scramble, as people raced to
register their new Ute to head-off
the heftier fees now at play in
our diesel Ute arena. This has
distorted the market to some
degree by dragging forward
by months thousand of new
Ute sales. These will lose some
momentum between now and the
end of the year as our economy
continues to slow.
When it comes to clean car
fees the 1.9 litre motor saves a
fair wad of your hard earned
cash compared to the 3.0 litre
turbo diesel in its AWD sibling.
The smaller 1.9 litre power plant
incurs a $1,868 fee, which is
$3,767 less than what you will be
hit with for the 3.0 litre engine
found in the AWD BT50.
This new smaller motor
capacity is exclusive to the price
leading GSX and mid-spec GTX
2WD. The GSX supplied for this
road test heads the BT50’s value
for money charge at $48,740
plus the clean car fee with the
more generously appointed
GTX retailing for $52,740. A
decent deal sweetener is a 5
year/150,000km new vehicle
warranty and $250 fixed price
servicing for the same period and
distance. A freebie lobbed in for
good measure, is unlimited km
5-year Mazda On-Call Roadside
Assistance.
This frugal four-cylinder
turbo diesel is feisty enough with
110kW of power and 350Nm of
torque. The latter is about 100nm
down on the larger 3.0-litre put
to work in AWD BT50’s. Despite
less power and torque its towing
capabilities are only marginally
down on these models at 3,000kg
braked or 750kg unbraked.
Maximum payload increases to
1150kg for the 2WD GSX and
1,130kg for the GTX.
The Isuzu sourced 1.9-litre
is widely used in BT50 and
D-Max models sold in Southeast
Asian markets, including
Thailand where both models
are produced. It’s a tough wee
motor, yet unexpectedly smooth
and refined. Acceleration from
standing starts and in-gear is
brisk, but you are always aware
that with its modest engine

capacity, it has to work harder
for the same results delivered by
the larger diesels powering in
its competitors. Enabling it to
punch above its weight is a smart
six-speed automatic well versed
in selecting the right gear at the
right time.
A generously proportioned
cabin has plenty of front and
rear legroom, while the seats
are supportive and comfy. The
instruments and controls for key
functions such as lights, wipers
and indicators are easy to operate
and read.
Visibility from the elevated
seating position is hard to fault
and for a long vehicle this one
proved easier to park than I
thought it would be. An excellent
reversing camera and its parking
guides make squeezing in and
out of tight parks a drama free
exercise. For a price-driven
model the GSX lacks for little in
the way of features and driver
creature comforts. A touch
screen infotainment system
supports both Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto, with a multiinformation
display providing
key driving information are
standard.
All BT-50’s have a 5-Star
ANCAP Safety Rating under a
more demanding testing regime
introduced in 2022. This is the
first BT50 fitted with a driver
knee airbag and a driver’s farside
air bag. Anti-whiplash front
seats reduce the severity of neck
injuries in a rear end impact.
There’s greater pedestrian
protection from a more human
friendly bonnet designed to
reduce injury in a crash.
This model adds more pages to
the BT50 safety success story led
by a host of class-leading active
safety technologies to help keep
the driver out of trouble. These
include Autonomous Emergency
Braking with Pedestrian/Cyclist
Detection, Adaptive Cruise
Control, Blind Spot Monitoring,
and Lane Departure Warning.
The delicate balance between
ride comfort and road holding is
right on the mark and as good as
you will find among the current
crop of Utes. This has been
achieved without compromising
the vehicles durability and
strength, with the GSX offering
plenty of both. With the BT-50
you get as standard class leading
suspension refinement, although
the firmer rear spring settings
make its low-speed ride over
uneven surfaces fidgety.
The test Ute cornered
confidently, with the experience
made more enjoyable by well
weighted and communicative
steering.

Leeston Property Market Overview
Leeston is more than just the home of
the renowned annual Ellesmere A & P
Show. With its small-town charm and
an ever-growing number of amenities
and services, Leeston offers a wide of
property choices. It provides a village
lifestyle within a small community, but
being only 30 kilometres south-west of
Christchurch, it also provides an easy
commute to the city and other suburbs.

Chris Flanagan from Bayleys Selwyn
says that appraisals are picking up for
spring. He advises that with a shortage
of stock, especially in the $500,000 to
$600,000 price range, “ Anything in the
first home buyers range is being snapped
up pretty quickly.” He confirms buyers
come from the North Island, Rolleston,
Lincoln and Christchurch. The median
days that properties are on the market is
105. The median sale price is $685,000,
while the median asking price is
$659,000. Chris advises that properties
in the $600,00 to $700,000 range are
taking longer to sell. Meanwhile,
properties are available at the recently
developed Karumata Oaks subdivision
close to Leeston’s town centre for those
looking for a new home.
Rental properties are in strong
demand in most areas, and Leeston is
no different. The median rent is $530
a week, and realestate.co.nz currently
shows only five properties available.
