Rogue `baiters cause
problems in red zone

SOME whitebaiters are
knocking down fences and
camping illegally in the red
zone, frustrating authorities
and law-abiding fishers.
Two weeks into the new
season, the city council has
been dealing with whitebaiters
forcing entry and parking up
illegally along the Ōtākaro
Avon River in tents and selfcontained
buses.
Two fences were broken at
Locksley Ave and River Rd in
the first few days.
Dallington Residents
Association chairwoman Bebe
Frayle said the area already had
a problem with unauthorised
vehicles “hooning round” in the
red zone, which she says invites
more trouble.
“People see that there are
people in there over the fences,
and then it just encourages
other people to do it as well.
“It creates a bit of a free-forall,
which is not great.”
One whitebaiter, who doesn’t
want to be named, said this is
the kind of behaviour that gives
the rest of them a bad rap.
He said the rules are there
for a reason and wants other
whitebaiters to be fair about it.
“Breaking down fences and
setting up full-on campsites is a
step too far.
“And it annoys the rest of us.
That’s where fights between
whitebaiters start, and again
that just makes us look bad.”

Work on
nor’west
arc cycle
route link
underway
THE NEXT stage of construction
on the Nor’West Arc Cycleway is
underway.
The new section of the cycleway
will run from Canterbury
University to Aorangi Rd and is
expected to be completed by mid-
2024.
Work started on Monday along
Ilam Rd between Aorangi Rd and
Maidstone Rd.
City council head of transport
Lynette Ellis said the cycleway will
make it safer and easier for people
to bike to school, the university,
the local shops and Jellie Park.
“Making it safer for people to
bike helps reduce congestion,
lowers emissions and makes it
easier for cyclists to get around,”
Ellis said.
“As part of this work we’re
also making it safer for Cobham
Intermediate and Burnside
Primary School students to safely
cross Ilam Rd by installing a
signalised crossing with a safe
speed platform.”
Additional improvements
include new trees and
landscaping, upgrading the layout
at signalised intersections and
installing tactile pavers. This
will encourage people to travel at
lower speeds to make it safer for
everyone.

Schools collaborate
to restore sculpture

SIX SCHOOLS rallied together
to breathe life back into an art
sculpture in Hornby.
South Hornby School, Hornby
Primary School, Yaldhurst
Model School, Templeton
School, Gilberthorpe School and
Wigram Primary School were all
invited to paint river rocks to go
in the sculpture.
The sculpture, located in
Denton Park, was originally
created by Judith Streat in 2004
and drew inspiration for her
design from timelines, family
trees and the geography of the
area.
South Hornby School deputy
principal Kristen Harris-Tatana
said the original rocks were more
like pebbles and people kept
taking them out, so those in the
updated sculpture are more like
river rocks.
“The children have been busy
painting the stones to put into
the sculpture over a few weeks.
Some have pictures representing
their home countries, reflecting
on how we are a multi-cultural
society and some are pictures of
the school post-earthquake, but
all reflect the story of the area,”
she said.

project, along with helpers, celebrate the unveiling of the
rejuvenated sculpture.
Harris-Tatana said they were
approached by city council
ranger Holly Whitaker who
asked if they wanted to be
involved with the project.
“This project has helped
the children gain more of an
understanding of people in the
community and has let them
create artwork that has brought
them together and hopefully will
bring the community together
too.”
Whitaker said it was amazing
to have the kids involved in this
project and that the sculpture
will not go unnoticed anymore.
“This park will benefit from
the extra care and it will give the
community a bit of ownership
and pride,” she said.
Greater Hornby Residents
Association chair Kim Moss
said it was lovely to see how the
children have been able to work
together.
“It is fantastic to have the
artwork displayed. It gives us and
the children a sense of pride for
the area,” she said.
Cycleway work
detours in place

a northbound direction along
Ilam Rd with southbound traffic
detoured. There is no access
to Ilam Rd from the Clyde Rd
roundabout,” said Ellis.
“The detour routes are signposted.

The traffic lights at Ilam/
Memorial and Ilam/Maidstone
will be temporarily turned off
for about eight weeks during the
upgrade.
The Nor’ West Arc will
provide an important link
connecting Cashmere to the
Northern Line Cycleway, near
St James Park in Papanui.

process to adopt a different
design for the Aorangi Rd

New look Valentines open now
Hornby restaurant offers more choices and familiar favourites
Thousands of Christchurch families will
have fond memories of enjoying the tasty
food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet
restaurant, which was located for many
years in the central city.
A New Zealand-wide franchise
operation, the business went through many
changes over the years, then with new
owners taking over the company six years
ago, it gained a new momentum.
A third franchise was set up in Auckland,
its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in July
2019, Valentines Christchurch opened at a
new location – Chalmers Street, Hornby.
As company director Ron Lal explains,
Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi culture
and they wanted to retain that feeling of
nostalgia, but with some new concepts
added to the mix.
“We wanted to offer our customers a new
experience that’s up with the times, and
with a modern twist on hospitality.
“Customers have a lot more choice of
food now,” he says, “for example you can
choose your own meat, which will be
cooked individually for you. We offer a big
selection of dishes, seafood and desserts,
and of course there are the familiar
favourites that the children love, like the
chocolate fountain and an endless supply of
ice-cream.
“We want to wow the customers and
at the same time we want to create that
nostalgic Valentines feel.”
The Valentines tradition of a free meal
for a customer on their birthday has been
upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat
and, of course, with the famous birthday
song being sung by staff, too. Families are
also invited to take advantage of the school
holiday special from time to time. During
the holidays, one child under the age of
eight gets a free lunch if accompanied by a

longer able to purchase keys to
access fenced areas around the
riverbank.

the situation is disappointing,
but he hopes things will
improve.
“It’s probably one of those
situations that we’ll get at the start of the
season, and then our rangers go out and
talk to those individuals . . . we’re hoping
that then they’ll start to even out.”

THE CITY council swim education team
has become the first organisation in New
Zealand to get accreditation as a water skills
for life provider.
City council swim education
manager Tina de Boer said the
accreditation is recognition of the
team’s dedication to the Swimsafe
programme which educates children about
water safety.
“Teaching children water safety is a
crucial skill they will use for the rest of their
life. Our goal is to give children the skills
and knowledge they need to
assess risk and make smart decisions
complied so far. “If that becomes a
repeated pattern, and it starts to look like
it’s going to escalate, then our rangers
would have to hand those matters on to
police.”
Frayle (left) said the city council
has become good at dealing with
this situation, but antisocial
and disrespectful behaviour is a
problem every season.
“There are people who are
whitebaiting along that river
(who) don’t leave any mess, and
they’re respectful . . . but there are
lots of people who aren’t.”
She added that whitebaiters need to be
mindful they’re entering a community
who have been through a lot, and while
they want to share their space, they need
to feel safe.

It was developed for children in years 1-8
to learn water safety while at school.
GIVING BLOOD TO SAVE A LIFE
Recently my Macy and Hannah’s
greyhound gave up their blood to help
save a life, both within days of each other.
The dog needing the blood ended up
with 4 blood transfusions over 10 days
and sadly we couldn’t save her. When a
patient requires a blood transfusion, things
need to happen fast as the patient has lost
too much blood for sustainability of life.
For patients that have lost blood volume,
whole blood or packed red blood cells are
required.

We fairly commonly
see blood loss
anemias with
poisonings like rat
bait, bleeding spleens or ruptured tumours
and trauma like road traffic accidents. Some
of these patients will exhibit weakness,
laboured breathing and wobbliness.
Transfused blood to a dog with a non
regenerative anemia will last 120 days, so it
can stabilise a dog for 2-3 months allowing
diagnostic tests to be completed.
We don’t keep stored fresh blood products
so if we can’t source from the NZL Blood
Bank, we have a few of our own donors
with staff pets.
To become a donor first the dog has to be
healthy, fully vaccinated and parasite free,
not on medications and not had cancer or
chemotherapy in the past. They need to
weight over 25kg and have a PCV over 35%.
Greyhounds are perfect donor dogs for this
reason. We then need to get their blood
type to make sure they are the donor type
( Ideally DEA 1.1 or DEA 1.2 negative). The
recipient dog also needs the same blood
type as the donor and both dogs need to

potentially malignant, life threatening
Anal Gland cancer ( I’m still awaiting the
histology results). I took her for a CT scan
at Pacific Radiology to check she was
cancer free elsewhere before embarking
on this major surgery. She flew through
the anaesthetic, even getting a teeth clean
and pedicure before wake up. She is doing
fabulously, taking all her medications
be cross matched at the laboratory, on the
day of the transfusion.
Usually we sedate the donor dog to remove
the blood needed for the patient in need.
We check the donor dogs amount of red
blood cells ( PCV) before we remove 10%
to 15% of the donors blood volume. To
prevent hypovolemia ( low blood volume)
the donor should receive intravenous
fluids (IVF) at the commencement of the
transfusion. A dogs total blood volume is
90mls/kg bodyweight so Macy could give
between 300-400mls blood safely.
The donor blood is given to the patient
in need via the jugular or cephalic vein
through a filtered giving set, which reduces
clots entering the circulation. Blood can
be warmed to body temperature before
administration. Slow blood flow rates
are advised for the first 30 minutes of the
transfusion to detect a possible reaction.
Signs of a transfusion reaction are hives,
intense scratching, vomiting,
fevers, depression, changes
in breathing and heart rates,
convulsions or cardiac arrest.
Luckily I haven’t witnessed
a transfusion reaction ever,
probably because we type
and crossmatch our donors
carefully, and have a nurse
sitting with these patients
observing their vitals.
Transfusion medicine isn’t
common, but if and when you
need to to save a patients life,
your whole team need to be
ready to go fast. Having donor dogs and
cats in the practice we have typed and we
know are healthy saves a huge amount
of time and potentially a life. If you’d like
your dog to be a donor dog then let us
know. You can never have too many blood
donors.

Call for Girl Guides volunteers

A LACK of volunteer leaders is
affecting the number of girls who
can participate in Girl Guides.
Girl Guides New Zealand
volunteer and programme team
leader Belinda Turnbull said
they have seen a drop of girls
enrolling in Girl Guides because
there has been no real marketing
or push to get more girls to join
the programme.
“The reason for that is because
we cannot offer everyone the
positive experience we know we
can until we get more volunteer
leaders, as we want to be able
to provide a positive and safe
experience for both our leaders
and our girls,” she said.
Turnbull said the drop in
volunteers is due to people’s lives
changing as well as the economy.
“People’s lives change, the
shortage of leaders at the
Northcote unit is due to one
just having a baby, another has
moved overseas and the other
found it overwhelming with
work, study and volunteering.
“But volunteers from other
units have rallied together to
support Northcote while we
recruit new volunteers and
train them. They have all been
working together as a team to
create an experience for the
girls.”
She said the economy is a bit of
a problem, with most households

unable to live off of one income.
“Both parents are usually
working and between work
and raising their own kids,
most people don’t have time to
volunteer.”
Turnbull said volunteering
is a great way to give back and
make new connections and

next generation of girls to be
confident and adventurous.
Volunteers can also gain
development and training
qualifications and first aid from
volunteering.”
Local coordinator and regional
hub coordinator Lisa Milroy has
been volunteering for the past
decade and said she grew up
guiding.
“Guiding has been my life
since I was six years old. I started
in Pippin and Brownie units in
South Waikato as a fresh leader,

my nursing training, and ran
a unit there for a year, before
having to step back to focus on
placements. This was such a hard
decision,” she said.
Milroy said she then moved up
to Auckland and found the local
coordinator role perfect and was
in the role for just under a year.
“Then the decision to move
to Christchurch relocated me
once more. I stepped straight
into being the local coordinator
down here in April last year, and
then applied for the regional hub
coordinator position.”
She said she truly believes
volunteering changes you
and that giving back to the
community is one of the greatest
things you can do with your
time.
“I may not donate hundreds
or thousands, but the time I
give, I reap rewards. This is my
space away from home to enjoy
being a woman, enjoy seeing
girls gain skills and grow in their
confidence, and see leaders make
connections, in a world where
that isn’t always easy.”

Mentors needed to support
children with parents in jail

VOLUNTEERS ARE needed for
a mentorship programme to help
support children with a parent in
prison.
Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou is a
national charity which cares for
families of people serving prison
or community sentences.
There are an estimated 17,000
children in New Zealand with a
parent in prison.
The mentorship programme
connects them with an adult
who can act as a confidant and
friend.
A Christchurch mother,
whose children received
mentoring while their father
spent eight years in prison, spoke
anonymously about the benefits
of the programme.
She said having her ex-partner
in prison “brought so many
challenges for our kids”.
She was grateful for the
support of Pillars, and said
it “helped me rebuild the
foundations of my wee family”.
She said the mentors “gave my
children a sense of normality
as, until recently, I have reached
a point I can answer their
questions without falling apart”.

There is a waiting list with six
children in the city who need
mentors.
Pillars general manager Tuhi
Leef said there is a “greater need
than ever” for volunteers.
He said it is partly due to
the pandemic, which put more
distance between parents in jail
and their family. This added to
their emotional distress.
Leef said there is an urgent
need for male mentors who can
help boys.
“It’s often it’s dad that’s in
prison. So having a positive male
role model.”
Without intervention, children
of prisoners are more than nine
times more likely to go prison
than other children.
Leef said mentors help change
the statistics.
“What they’re able to help do
with these rangatahi [young
people] is transformational.
What we want for our whānau is
positive, better outcomes.”
To become a Pillars mentor,
applicants must
commit to at least
12 months in the
programme.

Danielle Moore
is a 25-year-old PhD student at of
Canterbury University. She has
mentored a 17-year-old girl for
the past six years.
It has been rewarding for her.

it that she does,” Moore said.
“Over the time she’s become,
you know, a really close friend
and someone that I’ve grown
with since 19.”
Moore said: “What we do has
sort of developed overtime.”
From connecting over their
shared interest in art to helping
study for NCEA, Moore has seen
her grow throughout her teenage
years.
Recently they started going
thrifting at second hand clothing
stores together and discussing
life after high school.
“She can share anything with
me – and she
knows that.”
Moore said the
qualities needed
to make a great

Lighter bites for warmer days
Herby chicken dippers
This is the perfect recipe to make
when zucchini is in season. Serve
with a fresh green salad for dinner
or make smaller dippers to share
as nibbles at a party or barbecue.
Dippers - makes 24
2 medium zucchini
500g chicken mince
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
2 spring onions, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 Tbsp finely chopped mint
2 Tbsp finely chopped fresh
parsley
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp cracked black pepper
Minty dipping sauce
¾ cup Greek yoghurt
1 handful fresh mint, finely
chopped
1 tsp finely grated lemon zest
1 Tbsp lemon juice
¼ tsp salt
Method
• Coarsely grate the zucchini on
to a clean tea towel. Pull up the
edges and wring out as much
liquid as possible.
• Transfer to a large mixing
bowl. Add all the remaining
ingredients and mix until
combined.
• Roll the mixture into about 24
balls about the size of golf balls.
Place on a plate, flatten slightly
with the palm of your hand and
chill for 10 minutes to firm up.
• To make the minty dipping
sauce, combine the ingredients
in a bowl and chill until needed.
• Cook the chicken dippers on a
hot barbecue for 15-20 minutes
until nicely browned and cooked
through.
• Serve with the sauce on the
side, and garnish with extra
mint.
Notes
This mixture could also be made
into chicken burger patties.
To save time I use a pull chopper
to finely chop my herbs and
spring onion together.
Lemon and blueberry loaf
This is a lovely, light loaf, perfect
for morning tea that just looks so
pretty when glazed.
Loaf
150g butter, melted
1 cup white sugar
1 Tbsp finely grated lemon zest
½ cup lemon juice
2 eggs, whisked
2 cups plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
¾ cup frozen blueberries, thawed
Lemon glaze
1 cup icing sugar
1 tsp finely grated lemon zest
2 Tbsp lemon juice
Method
• Preheat the oven to 170°C fan
bake. Line a 27 x 13 cm loaf tin
with baking paper.
• Mix together the butter and
sugar in a large bowl. Stir in the
lemon zest and juice. Add the
eggs and mix again.
• Sift in the flour, baking powder
and soda. Fold together until just
combined.
• Pour one-third of the batter
into the lined tin. Scatter half of
the blueberries on top. Repeat
with one-third more of the
mixture and the remaining
blueberries. Finish with the
remaining loaf mixture and
smooth the top.
• Bake for 50-60 minutes, until
a skewer inserted into the centre
comes out clean. Allow to cool.
• To make the lemon glaze, mix
the icing sugar, lemon zest and
juice. Add the boiling water a
little at a time until a drizzling
consistency is achieved.
• Drizzle the lemon glaze over
the cooled loaf. Allow to set
before slicing and serving. Store
in an airtight container in the
pantry.
Notes
Use fresh blueberries if they are
in season.

HYUNDAI’S Sante Fe has joined
the electrification party and
celebrates its arrival by offering
standard and plug-in hybrid
models, with the leap to full
electrification expected in 2024
with the arrival of an all-new
replacement for the current
model.
The Santa Fe is Hyundai’s
longest-running SUV now with
23 years on the clock. In this
time, it’s built a strong following
here, hitting the sweet spot for
many with its 7-seater capability,

Santa Fe has more control and
less body lean on twisty roads,
or when called on to make
unexpected changes in direction.
A 15mm reduction in ground
clearance over the old model
brings a more composed feel
to the suspension. Through the
bends, it sits noticeably flatter
and is less distracted by uneven
road surfaces, with minimal
lateral vehicle movement from
the rear suspension.
The Santa Fe’s serious off-road
adventuring aspirations are
firmly held in check. It does
a decent enough job and feels
assured traversing reasonably
well-formed tracks.
