Firefighters battled a large blaze that engulfed an abandoned house on Buckleys Rd, Linwood, 

on Monday. Several crews were called to the fire just before 6pm. Smoke from the blaze 

billowed across the eastern suburbs. A neighbour told Stuff she could hear flames, “cracking, 

and fireworks” in the house which had been “empty for years”.

PLANS TO make streets in 

Aranui safer and easier to use 

are out for public feedback. 

The proposal to make the area 

more people-friendly includes 

upgrades to intersections, the 

addition of speed bumps, options 

for cycle infrastructure on 

Breezes Rd, and brightening the 

road with coloured paint. 

Improvements to the crossings 

outside Haeata Community 

Campus and Chisnallwood 

Intermediate are included in 

the safety plan, alongside a new 

crossing outside St James School. 

Waka Kotahi funding has 

been sourced through the Streets 

for People programme to help 

make streets in Aranui safer and 

easier for all road users. 

The proposal includes reclaiming 

some road space, particularly 

on Hampshire St, to give 

pedestrians more room in areas 

where concern were raised. 

Intersection upgrades to slow 

traffic and make it easier for 

pedestrians to cross are also 

included in the safety plan. 

The proposed changes will 

use low-cost materials that can 

be adapted once in the ground, 

to ensure all needs are met with 

future permanent solutions. 

Public feedback closes on 

October 2.

Science whiz 

to help with 

elephant 

conservation

Kwak is Thailand-bound in 

December to take part in 

an elephant conservation 

programme. 

The 15-year-old will be based at 

Kui Buri National Park. 

The international service 

project supports better humanelephant 

co-existence and also 

contributes to the Tom Yum Project, 

providing sustainable food 

security for rural areas. 

Aaron will be part of the 

environmental team, planting 

crops and also building park 

ranger huts, hornbill nest boxes, 

and gathering data on elephant 

migration. 

He goes to Thailand on the 

back of finishing second in the 

Otago University senior science 

quiz, year 11 section. 

Fellow Christ’s College student 

Angus Gifford, 17, achieved top 

mark in the year 13 section. 

They described the advanced 

national science quiz as “challenging 

but enjoyable”. 

The competitive quiz tests logical 

thought, general knowledge, 

and scientific skills. 

“The science quiz really covers 

everything – from biology to 

chemistry and physics to earth 

sciences – so you need a range of 

in-depth knowledge,” Angus said. 

Both Angus and Aaron are also 

committed to sharing their skills 

and talents with others, being 

involved in tutoring and community 

projects. 

Angus tutors fellow students 

and is a member of Academe, a 

community service programme 

providing one-on-one tutoring 

for the children of the victims of 

the 2019 mosque attacks. He has 

also driven an inaugural science, 

technology, engineering and 

mathematics (STEM) week at

Godwits return to 

estuary heralds spring 

THE BAR-TAILED godwits have touched 

down on the Avon-Heathcote Ihutai 

Estuary, landing earlier than usual. 

The first newly arriving birds were 

spotted on September 9 by ornithologist 

Grahame Bell, who was checking on 

the birds at the request of the city 

council. 

Bell reported a flock of 290 birds, with 

some still showing vestiges of red breeding 

plumage – which they usually moult prior 

to departure from the Arctic. 

The birds landed after a six-to-eight 

day non-stop flight covering a distance of 

11,700km from the Yukon river delta in 

Alaska. 

City council parks ecologist Andrew 

Crossland said this was the second earliest 

arrival on record, two days later than last 

year. 

“Over the next few weeks another 1000+ 

godwits are expected to arrive on the 

estuary,” he said. 

“We can also expect additional 

flocks of 200-400 arriving elsewhere 

in the Christchurch area at each of the 

Brooklands Lagoon, Lyttelton Harbour 

and Lake Ellesmere.”

Game-changing cauliflower dishes 

Cauliflower latkes 

Makes 12 

Latkes 

2 potatoes, waxy variety (nadine), 

scrubbed 

½ medium onion 

1 medium-sized cauliflower, cut 

into florets 

½ tsp turmeric 

¼ tsp ground coriander 

1 egg 

2 spring onions, sliced finely 

salt and pepper 

Coriander yogurt 

150g unsweetened yogurt 

1 bunch coriander, roughly 

chopped 

8 mint leaves, finely chopped 

½ lemon, juice 

1 garlic clove, crushed 

pinch salt and pepper 

Method 

• Make the yogurt sauce by 

combining all the ingredients and 

mixing well. Leave in the fridge 

until required. 

• Chop the cauliflower florets, or 

use a food processor, into a fine 

crumb-like texture. Put in a large 

bowl. 

• Grate the potatoes and onions. 

Squeeze in a clean cloth to remove 

as much liquid as possible. Add to 

the cauliflower. 

• Add the turmeric, ground 

coriander, salt, pepper, egg and 

spring onion and mix well to 

combine. 

• Generously cover the bottom of a 

large heavy-based fry pan with oil 

and heat. When hot, add generous 

spoonfuls of mixture. When 

golden (about three minutes), 

carefully turn over and cook 

the other side for a further two 

minutes or until golden. 

• Remove and drain on kitchen 

paper. Serve warm with the 

coriander yogurt. 

Cauliflower pizza 

Serves 2-4 

Base 

500g cauliflower (about 1 

medium) 

200g broccoli 

2 eggs 

50g parmesan cheese, grated 

75g ground almonds 

salt and pepper 

½ tsp dried oregano 

Topping 

3 Tbsp tomato pizza sauce 

2 Tbsp oil 

200g broccoli florets, blanched 

briefly 

1 small red onion, sliced thinly 

2 cloves garlic, sliced thinly 

200g spinach leaves 

100g mozzarella 

20g parmesan cheese, shaved or 

grated finely 

pinch chilli flakes 

extra virgin olive oil (for drizzling) 

Method 

• Preheat oven to 200degC. 

• Remove the stalk from the 

cauliflower and broccoli and 

discard, and cut into chunks. 

Keep half of the broccoli for the 

topping. Blitz the cauliflower and 

broccoli in stages so it resembles 

rice. Transfer to a bowl, cover with 

cling film and microwave on high 

for 5-6 minutes until softened. 

Drain and tip on to a clean cloth 

and squeeze tightly to remove any 

excess moisture. Tip into a bowl 

and add the ground almonds, 

oregano, seasoning and eggs. Mix 

well to form a dough. 

• Line a baking tray with 

greaseproof paper and grease 

lightly with oil. 

• Mould the cauliflower mixture 

so it forms a large round or 2 small 

rounds if desired. Bake for 15-20 

minutes or until golden. 

• While the base is cooking, 

prepare the topping. 

• Heat a frying pan to medium and 

add 2 tablespoon of oil. Add the 

sliced onion and garlic and cook 

until the onion has softened (3-5 

minutes). Add the broccoli and 

cook for a further 3 minutes. Add 

the spinach and chilli. Season well 

with salt and pepper and remove 

from the heat. 

• When the base is ready, carefully 

spread with tomato sauce and 

sprinkle over the greens. Finish 

with cheese and bake for 15 

minutes or until the cheese has 

melted and the pizza looks golden 

and delicious. 

• Finish with a little more freshly 

shaved parmesan and a drizzle of 

extra virgin olive oil.

4-6 cloves garlic, peeled 

80ml olive oil 

½ tsp salt 

1 tsp ground cumin 

pinch smoked paprika 

2-3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 

2 Tbsp tahini 

To serve 

2 cloves garlic, peeled and 

sliced thinly 

2 Tbsp olive oil 

small handful parsley, roughly 

chopped 

Method 

• Place a steamer basket over 

a pot of boiling water. Add the 

cauliflower florets and garlic 

and steam until tender (about 

15 mins). Remove and allow 

to cool. 

•Place the garlic, oil, salt, 

cumin, paprika, 2 Tbsp lemon 

juice and tahini in a food 

processor and blend until silky 

and smooth. 

• To serve, heat the garlic and 

olive oil until the garlic starts 

to go golden brown. Remove 

from the heat and pour over 

the hummus. Sprinkle parsley 

on top and serve.

The Rise of Spoken Word at 

Te Aratai College: 

“Word: The Front Line” is an inter-high school 

spoken-word poetry competition, bringing together 

teams of young people to share their stories in an 

explosion of youth expression. 

This year was the 

first extension of 

the event outside 

of Auckland, with 

the first Canterbury 

Poetry Slam event 

held at the Piano on 

August 22nd. Five 

Christchurch schools 

were involved, and Te 

Aratai proudly entered 

a team of 4 students 

to this Ōtautahi 

inaugural poetic event: 

Isabel Marshall-Ma, 

Adrian Singh, Georgia 

Kieboom and Joseph 

Lomani.Word: The 

Front Line, curated 

by Action Education, 

is a poetry slam with the purpose of engaging 

and growing the potential of our future leaders. 

It is the only creative battlefield of its kind, 

equipping young people with poetry prowess 

and leadership principles for an opportunity to 

battle for themselves and the challenges that 

their generation faces. The migration south of 

Action Education’s poetry slam competition is 

a lucky coincidence for Te Aratai, with the kura 

appointment of English teacher Neema Singh, 

who recently moved from Auckland. Neema is 

originally from Christchurch and moved with her 

family to Auckland, where she has taught English 

for 8 years at Papatoetoe High School and 

Western Springs College. 

“I became involved with spoken word in 2013

at Papatoetoe. 

We entered two 

teams into the 

Frontline which 

was in its second 

year at that 

stage. It was just 

starting out and 

sort of grew from 

there, it was really 

quite cool. One 

of my students, 

who actually first 

competed in the 

competition got 

really nervous 

and could hardly 

speak, but now he 

is a spoken word 

artist who has 

a popular Ted Talk online as well as numerous 

poems published on YouTube.” 

Neema has an affinity for spoken word due to 

her own love affair with poetry. She completed 

a Master of Creative Writing at the University of 

Auckland in 2016 and has since been featured 

in two anthologies of published poetry: Ko 

AotearoaTatou 2020: We are New Zealand (A 

collective response after the mosque attacks 

to showcase the diversity of New Zealand 

writers and artists) and A Clear Dawn (the first 

Teams from Papanui, 

Girls’ High, and Haeata 

join Te Aratai in a 

performance brief 

anthology of Asian writers in New Zealand). 

Neema also has upcoming poems being 

published in The New Zealand Poetry Society 

2023 Anthology and He Moana o Reo / An Ocean 

of Languages. Her love of poetry and student 

expression has been complemented by Dietrich 

Soakai, a spoken word artist from South Auckland 

who recently moved to Ōtautahi. He, along with 

Neema, helped to recruit, tutor and coach the 

inaugural Te Aratai spoken word team. “He is 

such a dynamic and talented poet, who has a 

knack for connecting and inspiring young people.” 

“Dietrich had, I think, about four weeks to 

prepare the team for the poetry slam, so it was 

a huge achievement for our ākonga to write a 

poem, memorise it and learn how to perform 

and deliver in front of an audience. I think was 

such an amazing achievement for them to be 

a part of, especially given the vulnerability and 

bravery in sharing their personal experiences in 

performance. The poetry was funny, engaging 

and intelligent. It was an inspiring night to be a 

part of.”
