Buyer, seller stay close
after ‘ding dong’ battle
• By Nikki Preston
A BUYER and seller won’t have
to move far as they are shifting
to homes on the street they all
live on.
A young couple fought off
tough competition at an auction
to secure a property on
Penruddock Rise, Westmorland
(above), just around the corner
from their current home.
The people
they bought the
house from are
also staying in
the neighbourhood
and are
building a
Conor
Patton
smaller home up
the road.
Bayleys auctioneer
Conor Patton said no
one was moving far at all.
“It’s a really local affair.”
He said the Penruddock Rise
auction had been “hot” and he
had struggled to keep up with
the fast bids from the floor.
“People were bidding up on
themselves, placing multiple
bids themselves. I was working
hard to keep up.”
Placing bids on top of your
own bids was a technique
bidders occasionally used to
try and get in front, especially
when in this case there were
four people actively bidding for
the property, he said.
“It happens infrequently
particularly when there’s
several bidders.”
Ten youths
nabbed
after crime
spree
across city
FOUR YOUTHS have been taken
into custody after a shop was
burgled in Sumner.
They were the first of 10 youths
caught by police in just one night
after a crime spree of burgled
shops across the city.
Police said the incident on
Wakefield Rd, Sumner, was
reported around 2am on Tuesday.
A second group of four youths
were also arrested after breaking
into a fast food store on The
Runway in Wigram, which was
reported at 4.15am on Tuesday.
The youths were carrying out
their crimes in groups, police
said.
Separately, two youths were
taken into custody after officers
spotted a stolen car being driven
dangerously on Hargood St in
Woolston that same night. The
car was later found abandoned
on McGregors Rd in Bromley at
2.50am, with two young people
found by officers a short time
later.
Police have confirmed they are
also following positive lines of
inquiry in relation to two other
burglaries in the city. One was
at a vape store on Main North
Rd, Redwood, which occurred
shortly before 3am on Tuesday.
Another was a liquor store on
Colombo St, Sydenham, which
was broken into at around the
same time.
Hard working GirlBosses
• By Sasha Watson
TWO CASHMERE High School
students have become GirlBosses
for their work in science and
community projects.
Millie Palmer, 16, took out the
Canterbury GirlBoss innovation
award and Katie Wells, 16,
received the activator award.
GirlBoss, a nationwide
network of 17,500 high school
students, held their inaugural
awards night last week.
Millie was recognised as
someone who takes action,
isn’t afraid to get her hands
dirty, and lets her strength and
determination lead the way.
About two years ago, Millie
began her extensive research
project on sustainable filtration
of microplastics in water at
Cashmere High.
Now, she is researching
further solutions with the help
of the Institute of Science and
Research.
“Almost one-third of the
microplastics in the ocean are
derived from our laundry water
waste,” said Millie.
“The fibres of a plastic-based
fabric, like polyester, wash off
our clothing and then run into
the ocean.”
Throughout her research,
Millie said she has found wool
to be a good filter and hopes to
GIRLBOSSES: Millie Palmer (left) and Katie Wells have been recognised for their science
and community work respectively.
create a long-lasting woollen
filter prototype.
Millie said she felt honoured
to receive the award, which was
sponsored by Enable.
“It is cool to be recognised,
and it is very cool to have
acknowledgement on the issue
of microplastics. I have really
enjoyed looking for solutions,”
she said.
With the $1000 she was
awarded, Millie is looking to
continue her research, using the
money for more resources.
“To anyone looking to possibly
be nominated for the GirlBoss
awards next year, apply. It is a
very cool community to be a part
of,” said Millie.
The GirlBoss awards are a
nationwide search for young
women aged 11 to 18 who
are leaders, role models and
innovators in categories such
as community, sports, arts and
culture, and innovation.
“It is a great network to be
a part of,” said Katie Wells,
who was recognised for her
community work.
“I enjoyed meeting all the
other young women doing
amazing things.”
Katie will put her $1000
winnings, sponsored by Synlait,
towards higher education.
“The award was for my activity
in the community – I am part
of a lot of community-focused
projects through school and the
school councils, like fundraising
and volunteering,” said Katie.
“It was pretty exciting to
receive an award as I have never
won anything similar. I am
grateful for the recognition, and
in the future others may take me
more seriously as they know I
can do it.”
Katie has been an organiser
and helper for many of the
school’s bake sales, fundraising
for the Turkey-Syria crisis, the
Mental Health Foundation
and the World Vision 40-hour
Challenge.
As well as volunteering to help
disabled children at Hohepa
School, Katie has spent the
last few months focusing on
collecting old chip packets which
will be sent to the Corrections
Department for prisoners to
work with.
“The chip packets will then be
made into blankets that we will
give to warm up those who are
homeless,” she said.
Godwits
return
heralds
spring
THE BAR-TAILED godwits
have touched down on the Avon-
Heathcote Ihutai Estuary, landing
earlier than usual.
The first newly arriving birds
were spotted on September 9 by
local ornithologist Grahame Bell,
who was checking on the birds at
the request of the city council.
Bell reported a flock of 290
birds, with some still showing
vestiges of red breeding plumage
– which they usually moult prior
to departure from the Arctic.
The birds landed after a six-toeight
day non-stop flight covering
a distance of 11,700km from the
Yukon river delta in Alaska.
City council parks ecologist
Andrew Crossland said this was
the second earliest arrival on
record, two days later than last
year.
“Over the next few weeks
another 1000+ godwits are
expected to arrive on the estuary,”
he said.
“We can also expect additional
flocks of 200-400 arriving
elsewhere in the Christchurch
area at each of the Brooklands
Lagoon, Lyttelton Harbour and
Lake Ellesmere.”
Plenty of competition and
banter at house auction
• From page 1
“They wish to get into the
psyche of their competitors by
making them seem that they are
supremely confident and have
bottomless budgets,” said Patton.
But the young couple held
strong and was the last remaining
bidder when the auction
paused at $1.56 million for
negotiation. The auction then
resumed and was announced on
the market at $1.58m, which is
what it sold for.
Patton said the five-bedroom,
three-bathroom home on a large
1599 sq m section attracted
plenty of interest with about 100
groups viewing it during the
auction campaign run by Bayleys
agents Adam Heazlewood
and Jessica Phibbs.
It was a similar situation for
a large family home on Dyers
Pass Rd, which attracted young
couples and mums and dads
when it was called at Harcourts
Holmwood auction rooms.
The four-bedroom, twobathroom
home, which was
marketed for the first time in 30
years by Harcourts listing agents
Jack and Steven Marshall, had
150 groups through its open
homes and attracted secondhome
buyers.
FAMILY HOME: Owner-occupiers showed plenty of
interest in the Dyers Pass Rd house. PHOTOS: NZ HERALD
Mark
McGoldrick
Harcourts
auctioneer Mark
McGoldrick
said: “There
were about half
a dozen bidders
on that and a real
good ding dong.”
Bids got down
to small increments
of $500
and $100,000, he said. It was
announced on the market at
$1.16m and buyers kept trying to
outbid each other until the hammer
swung down at $1.256m.
“There was a lot of banter and
things, it was quite fun.”
Meanwhile, a neglected property
on Hoon Hay Rd desperate
for some TLC after it had been
empty for a year also attracted
several bidders at the Bayleys
auction.
The five-bedroom, twobathroom
home on a large 1239
sq m was sold on an “as is where
is” basis due to years of deferred
maintenance.
Bayleys listing agent Duncan
An ‘as is, where is’ property
on Hoon Hay Rd sold
under the hammer for
$650,000.
Absolum marketed the property
at developers, investors or anyone
prepared to put in the hard
work to bring it up to scratch.
Photographs of the property
show trees encroaching on the
front half of the house.
More than four bidders
competed for the five-bedroom
home. Bidding opened at
$450,000, it paused at $575,000
before coming back on the
market and selling for $650,000
– more than $300,000 less than
its RV.
Harcourts Grenadier also
saw plenty of competition for
at auction with an “as is, where
is” property on Poulson St, in
Addington, selling for $610,000
after six bidders battled it out.
Zonta conference inspiring women
MORE THAN 160 business
and professional women from
throughout New Zealand
will be in Christchurch later
this month for the biennial
Zonta International District 16
Conference.
Well-known locally for
activities like the annual Zonta
Sports Awards, recognising
secondary school sportspeople,
and the Yellow Rose Run/Walk
(coming up on October 8 in
Hagley Park), Zonta has 27 clubs
nationwide. Their goal is to
build a better world for women
and girls, locally, nationally and
worldwide, through service and
advocacy.
District 16 Governor Phillippa
Jacobs-Lory, a member of the
Zonta Club of Christchurch-
Canterbury
says the
national
conference
this weekend
provides a
chance for
like-minded
Phillippa
Jacobs-Lory
women to
learn, to
network, and
to be reinvigorated.
“It’s an honour to be holding
the conference here – Deputy
Mayor Pauline Cotter is going
to open the programme – and
the whole weekend has been
designed to be inspiring for
LIGHTS: As part of the ‘Zonta says no to violence against women’ campaign, Christchurch buildings have previously been
lit up in orange.
everyone. Zontians in New
Zealand are doing terrific work
for women and girls, here and
overseas. Our power lies in the
fact that we’re an international
organisation with the ability
to support programmes
worldwide,” she said.
“This conference is going
to provide an opportunity for
us to learn more about our
advocacy work for women’s
rights and how we are making
a tangible difference for many
families in Aotearoa New
Zealand, especially through
our current district project,
the Grandparents Raising
Grandchildren Trust.”
Trust chief executive Kate
Bundle will give a summary of
the specific projects funded and
the outcomes delivered and a
“surprise” keynote speaker will
highlight topical issues during
the weekend.
“Close to Zonta’s heart is
the ‘Zonta says no to violence
against women’ campaign,” said
Bundle.
“We’re strongly involved each
November 25
to December
10 with the
16 days of
advocacy
surrounding
this campaign
and its use
Kate Bundle of the colour
orange to
represent a brighter future. In the
past we’ve had various buildings,
including the control tower
at Christchurch International
Airport, Canterbury Museum
and the Christchurch Art
Gallery, lit up in orange during
this time.
“At conference we’re taking
this a step further by asking
everyone who attends to bring a
pair of orange shoes to serve as a
symbol representing the women
who have tragically lost their
lives due to domestic violence.”
Due to unforeseen circumstances we had to sell a property at a time when
the market was not favorable. It is times like that where an agent with
Cameron’s experience and expertise is worth their salt. Unphased by what the
market was doing, Cameron provided us with a realistic (and ultimately very
accurate) expectations about what we might expect price wise, and he gave
sage advice on how we were best to achieve a sale.
There is no BS with Cameron - he and his team just focus on getting
the job done. It is no accident that he is the number one agent at
the event outside
of Auckland, with
the first Canterbury
Poetry Slam event
held at the Piano on
August 22nd. Five
Christchurch schools
were involved, and Te
Aratai proudly entered
a team of 4 students
to this Ōtautahi
inaugural poetic event:
Isabel Marshall-Ma,
Adrian Singh, Georgia
Kieboom and Joseph
Lomani.Word: The
Front Line, curated
by Action Education,
is a poetry slam with the purpose of engaging
and growing the potential of our future leaders.
It is the only creative battlefield of its kind,
equipping young people with poetry prowess
and leadership principles for an opportunity to
battle for themselves and the challenges that
their generation faces. The migration south of
Action Education’s poetry slam competition is
a lucky coincidence for Te Aratai, with the kura
appointment of English teacher Neema Singh,
who recently moved from Auckland. Neema is
originally from Christchurch and moved with her
family to Auckland, where she has taught English
for 8 years at Papatoetoe High School and
Western Springs College.
“I became involved with spoken word in 2013
Isabel and Adrian
during soundcheck
at Papatoetoe.
We entered two
teams into the
Frontline which
was in its second
year at that
stage. It was just
starting out and
sort of grew from
there, it was really
quite cool. One
of my students,
who actually first
competed in the
competition got
really nervous
and could hardly
speak, but now he
is a spoken word
artist who has
a popular Ted Talk online as well as numerous
poems published on YouTube.”
Neema has an affinity for spoken word due to
her own love affair with poetry. She completed
a Master of Creative Writing at the University of
Auckland in 2016 and has since been featured
in two anthologies of published poetry: Ko
AotearoaTatou 2020: We are New Zealand (A
collective response after the mosque attacks
to showcase the diversity of New Zealand
writers and artists) and A Clear Dawn (the first
Teams from Papanui,
Girls’ High, and Haeata
join Te Aratai in a
performance brief
anthology of Asian writers in New Zealand).
Neema also has upcoming poems being
published in The New Zealand Poetry Society
2023 Anthology and He Moana o Reo / An Ocean
of Languages. Her love of poetry and student
expression has been complemented by Dietrich
Soakai, a spoken word artist from South Auckland
who recently moved to Ōtautahi. He, along with
Neema, helped to recruit, tutor and coach the
inaugural Te Aratai spoken word team. “He is
such a dynamic and talented poet, who has a
knack for connecting and inspiring young people.”
“Dietrich had, I think, about four weeks to
prepare the team for the poetry slam, so it was
a huge achievement for our ākonga to write a
poem, memorise it and learn how to perform
and deliver in front of an audience. I think was
such an amazing achievement for them to be
a part of, especially given the vulnerability and
bravery in sharing their personal experiences in
performance. The poetry was funny, engaging
and intelligent. It was an inspiring night to be a
part of.”
and Adrian before
the event kicks off
From Eastern Europe with love
• By Sasha Watson
A ‘WEDDING Gowns through
the Ages’ exhibition will display
25 to 30 dresses, including two
Eastern European heritage
wedding gowns.
The exhibition will be held as a
fundraiser for the 30-plus-yearold
Diamond Harbour Medical
Centre, a community-built and
owned building that offers health
services to the district.
Event organisers Robyn
Hedges and Ruth Willis will be
bringing their own gowns.
“The gown I wore for my
1969 wedding was
handmade by me,
in New Zealand.
I also made the
mother-of-thebride
dress and
my daughter’s
wedding gown,
about 21 years
ago,” said
Robyn.
Ruth will be exhibiting an
intricately designed wedding
gown of silk taffeta from 1878,
which was worn by her greatgrandmother
Jessie Dallas
nee Mathieson, at her
wedding.
“It was my family’s wish
that this wedding gown
would be treasured and
shared by the family’s
future generations, and
not be given to a museum,”
said Ruth.
The idea for the
exhibition came
from the recent
celebration
of Ruth’s
60th
wedding anniversary.
“I had a vision to bring the
dresses to a younger generation,
and thought an exhibition
of different, older
and unique gowns
would be a good
way to fundraise,”
she said.
“It has just
grown from
there.”
Elena Chomic,
from Lithuania,
moved
to Diamond Harbour 11 years
ago with her husband, Georg.
She is showcasing two Eastern
European gowns that belong to a
friend.
“These gowns were bought and
transported from Ukraine in
2018 – they are both unique and
cultural to the urban wedding
gown fashion in the mid-20th
century,” said Elena.
“Eastern European women
used designed costumes for
different occasions such as
festivals, but the wedding gown
was more decorated, interesting,
and special.”
“The gowns were made of
linen and or wool, and are
often very heavy to wear,”
said Elena.
HIGHLIGHT: Elena Chomic
will present this handmade
Eastern European wedding
gown, along with a second
gown, at the Wedding
Dresses Through the Ages
exhibition.
Kōrero mai, let’s talk about our
Safer speed plan
Way safer for everyone
We’re planning to make more speed limit
changes in some areas across Christchurch.
Lower speeds can save lives and prevent serious injury.
Reducing our speed makes a major difference in a crash.
People make mistakes on our roads, and those mistakes
shouldn’t cost our neighbours, whānau or pets their lives.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have changed the way
speed limits are set. This gives us an opportunity to plan an
area-wide approach for speed changes.
We’re asking for feedback on our 10-year vision and
principles for safe speeds across Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula, as well as our first three years of implementation.
Gowns fit for a bride
• From page 7
Elena said the history of the
gowns is special, as they were
handmade by the mother and
grandmother together for the
bride.
“The first gown was made for
more than $1000. The second
gown is more plain and simple,
but it is also handmade, with
little beads,” she said.
Elena will also be showcasing
wedding ornaments and decorations
from Lithuania, Romania
and Ukraine.
The exhibition will include a
60-year-old horseshoe, an oldfashioned
garter, dolls, top hats,
walking sticks, a glory box,
and linen and floral
arrangements.
“People who travel from
Europe have different wedding
traditions than that of New
Zealand; they often have made a
special towel – which is used for
bread,” said Elena.
“I am happy to show the
gowns, especially to my friends
and family who have also immigrated
to New Zealand, as they
are a part of my history, heritage
and culture.”
The exhibition also features a
designer gown.
Said Robyn: “We also have a
Laura Ashley dress, a dress from
1912 and another from the
1920s, and a black wedding
gown.”
All funds raised will go to the
medical centre to progress with
the planned extension of the
building.
Literary event kicks
off digital book club
LITERARY EXPERT Morrin
Rout will be chairing an evening
with best-selling author Charity
Norman, ahead of the launch of
Together We Read for 2023.
Rout has spent over 25 years
organising literary events and
festivals, and presenting book
programmes on radio. She is the
former director of the Hagley
Writers Institute and a member
of the WORD festival trust
board.
Together We Read is New
Zealand’s biggest annual online
book club, connecting readers
through public libraries with a
featured title for two weeks each
year.
As part of the programme,
booklovers can participate
in online discussions and get
involved in events with the
author.
The digital book club is
now in its second year in New
Zealand, and the 2023 selection
is author Charity Norman’s
Remember Me.
“I’m thrilled to be invited
to visit Tūranga to spend an
evening with readers, to share
stories and chat with Morrin
Rout,” said Norman.
“Together We Read is a terrific
program – what an honour to be
a part of it.”
Norman’s best-selling novel
is a thriller, following the tale of
a close-knit community, ripped
apart by revelations that shine
the light on a young woman’s
disappearance 25 years earlier.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson said it was fantastic
to be able to facilitate this part
of the digital book club.
“We’re very excited to be able
to host this presentation in our
space,” she said.
“Bring your friends and
join us for a lively evening of
conversation and storytelling.”
• Morrin Rout is in
conversation with Charity
Norman on Friday, 5.30-
7.30pm, at Tūranga.
Game-changing cauliflower dishes
Cauliflower latkes
Makes 12
Latkes
2 potatoes, waxy variety (nadine),
scrubbed
½ medium onion
1 medium-sized cauliflower, cut
into florets
½ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp ground coriander
1 egg
2 spring onions, sliced finely
salt and pepper
Coriander yogurt
150g unsweetened yogurt
1 bunch coriander, roughly
chopped
8 mint leaves, finely chopped
½ lemon, juice
1 garlic clove, crushed
pinch salt and pepper
Method
• Make the yogurt sauce by
combining all the ingredients and
mixing well. Leave in the fridge
until required.
• Chop the cauliflower florets, or
use a food processor, into a fine
crumb-like texture. Put in a large
bowl.
• Grate the potatoes and onions.
Squeeze in a clean cloth to remove
as much liquid as possible. Add to
the cauliflower.
• Add the turmeric, ground
coriander, salt, pepper, egg and
spring onion and mix well to
combine.
• Generously cover the bottom of a
large heavy-based fry pan with oil
and heat. When hot, add generous
spoonfuls of mixture. When
golden (about three minutes),
carefully turn over and cook
the other side for a further two
minutes or until golden.
• Remove and drain on kitchen
paper. Serve warm with the
coriander yogurt.
Cauliflower pizza
Serves 2-4
Base
500g cauliflower (about 1
medium)
200g broccoli
2 eggs
50g parmesan cheese, grated
75g ground almonds
salt and pepper
½ tsp dried oregano
Topping
3 Tbsp tomato pizza sauce
2 Tbsp oil
200g broccoli florets, blanched
briefly
1 small red onion, sliced thinly
2 cloves garlic, sliced thinly
200g spinach leaves
100g mozzarella
20g parmesan cheese, shaved or
grated finely
pinch chilli flakes
extra virgin olive oil (for drizzling)
Method
• Preheat oven to 200degC.
• Remove the stalk from the
cauliflower and broccoli and
discard, and cut into chunks.
Keep half of the broccoli for the
topping. Blitz the cauliflower and
broccoli in stages so it resembles
rice. Transfer to a bowl, cover with
cling film and microwave on high
for 5-6 minutes until softened.
Drain and tip on to a clean cloth
and squeeze tightly to remove any
excess moisture. Tip into a bowl
and add the ground almonds,
oregano, seasoning and eggs. Mix
well to form a dough.
• Line a baking tray with
greaseproof paper and grease
lightly with oil.
• Mould the cauliflower mixture
so it forms a large round or 2 small
rounds if desired. Bake for 15-20
minutes or until golden.
• While the base is cooking,
prepare the topping.
• Heat a frying pan to medium and
add 2 tablespoon of oil. Add the
sliced onion and garlic and cook
until the onion has softened (3-5
minutes). Add the broccoli and
cook for a further 3 minutes. Add
the spinach and chilli. Season well
with salt and pepper and remove
from the heat.
• When the base is ready, carefully
spread with tomato sauce and
sprinkle over the greens. Finish
with cheese and bake for 15
minutes or until the cheese has
melted and the pizza looks golden
and delicious.
• Finish with a little more freshly
shaved parmesan and a drizzle of
extra virgin olive oil.
Cauliflower hummus
½ head (700g) cauliflower, cut
into florets
4-6 cloves garlic, peeled
80ml olive oil
½ tsp salt
1 tsp ground cumin
pinch smoked paprika
2-3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp tahini
To serve
2 cloves garlic, peeled and
sliced thinly
2 Tbsp olive oil
small handful parsley, roughly
chopped
Method
• Place a steamer basket over
a pot of boiling water. Add the
cauliflower florets and garlic
and steam until tender (about
15 mins). Remove and allow
to cool.
•Place the garlic, oil, salt,
cumin, paprika, 2 Tbsp lemon
juice and tahini in a food
processor and blend until silky
and smooth.
• To serve, heat the garlic and
olive oil until the garlic starts
to go golden brown. Remove
from the heat and pour over
the hummus. Sprinkle parsley
on top and serve.

Share and Celebrate
Our Stories at the CWEA
Join us at the Canterbury
WEA (Workers Educational
Association) as we celebrate
Christchurch Heritage Week.
This year’s theme is “Our
Stories of Living and Learning”
and we invite anyone who has a
fond memory of the WEA (be
it newly created or stored away
for some time) to come along
and share it with our recording
team. We are working with the
wonderful Plains FM to create a
special radio show and podcast
– so get involved and help us
create a piece of history that
will tell our stories tomorrow.
We are also working with the
Canterbury Museum to bring
you a special look back at this
much loved Museum’s long
history. Author John Wilson
will then join us for a talk on
the topic of his recent book:
Canterbury University 150
years.
The CWEA has its home
at 59 Gloucester Street,
Christchurch and has
been delivering adult and
community education to the
people of Christchurch since
1915. Today they are visited
by over a thousand individuals
each year. Four terms of
programmes offer a broad
range of courses, talks and
workshops. Themes of social
and environmental justice and
encouraging citizens to think
deeply about the issues of the
day feature each term.
For full details of how to get
involved and to sign up for
these talks and all our Term 4
events, workshops and courses
visit www.cwea.org.nz or call us
on 03 366 0285.
Spring into learning at Risingholme
The change in season comes with a
chance to reflect, reset, and perhaps try
something new!
Whether you’ve been thinking about
picking up a craft, a new hobby, or are
keen to upskill with an eye towards
taking the next step in your career,
Risingholme Learning offers a range
of workshops and short courses to suit
your needs and goals. Our courses cater
to a range of interests and give you the
chance to try something new in a relaxed
environment guided by our experienced
subject tutors.
Delivered across four locations in
Christchurch and developed with a
range of abilities in mind, our courses
are open to anyone aged 16 and over
who is not currently at school, regardless
of educational background.
Enrolments are now open for Term 4
and we have several new workshops and
courses available to sign up to, including
a four-week course based at Hornby
High School centred around digital
storytelling. Everyone has a story to tell,
and in an increasingly digital world there
are many tools available to help bring
these stories to life. Come learn how to
unpack the process of storytelling from
start to finish using common digital
applications. The final term of the year
also brings the lead up to the summer
social season and Christmas. In our
‘Making Felted Jewellery’ weekend
workshop you’ll make wearable art that
you can proudly show off (or gift) to
friends and family. It’s open to anyone
new to felting and keen to learn as well
as more experienced felters wanting to
develop their repertoire.
For those interested in life drawing
with a slight twist, we run a life drawing
in costume course led by a tutor whose
background in theatre and textile
design makes her the perfect guide
for learning to sketch both form and
fabric in a friendly and supportive
environment. Grow your skills, nurture
your mind, and enrol in one of over 300
courses at Risingholme today. Details at
GST OFF FRUIT & VEGES
Labour will take GST off fruit and vegetables
from 1 April next year, saving families around
$20 a month. Food prices are stubbornly
high, due to factors like high global inflation
and the extreme weather events New
Zealand experienced this year. By removing
GST from fresh and frozen fruit and vege,
we’re making it easier for families to put
healthy food on the table.
FREE BASIC DENTAL CARE TO
UNDER 30-YEAR-OLDS
Kiwis should have access to dental care, without
worrying about the bill. Labour will begin New Zealand’s
journey to universal dental care by expanding free basic
dental care to under 30-year-olds. This means access to
free annual check-ups, cleans, X-rays, basic fillings and
extractions –helping hundreds of thousands of Kiwis.
PROTECTING FREE
PRESCRIPTIONS
This year, Labour removed the $5 prescription
fee to make it easier for New Zealanders to
access the medicines they need. This is
already making a real difference for
households across the country, particularly
those who have multiple prescriptions to fill
on a regular basis.
