Buyer, seller stay close
after ‘ding dong’ battle
• By Nikki Preston
A BUYER and seller won’t have
to move far as they are shifting
to homes on the street they all
live on.
A young couple fought off
tough competition at an auction
to secure a property on
Penruddock Rise, Westmorland
(above), just around the corner
from their current home.
The people
they bought the
house from are
also staying in
the neighbourhood
and are
building a
Conor
Patton
smaller home up
the road.
Bayleys auctioneer
Conor Patton said no
one was moving far at all.
“It’s a really local affair.”
He said the Penruddock Rise
auction had been “hot” and he
had struggled to keep up with
the fast bids from the floor.
“People were bidding up on
themselves, placing multiple
bids themselves. I was working
hard to keep up.”
Placing bids on top of your
own bids was a technique
bidders occasionally used to
try and get in front, especially
when in this case there were
four people actively bidding for
the property, he said.
“It happens infrequently
particularly when there’s
several bidders.”
Youths
nabbed
after crime
spree
across city
FOUR YOUTHS were arrested
after breaking into a fast food
store in Wigram in the early
hours of Tuesday.
The break in on The Runway
happened at 4.15am. The four
where among a group of 10
youths taken into custody after a
burglary spree kept police busy
across the city.
Police were called to another
incident on Wakefield Rd,
Sumner, about 2am on Tuesday.
The youths were carrying out
their crimes in groups, police
said.
Two youths were taken into
custody after officers spotted
a stolen car being driven
dangerously on Hargood St in
Woolston that same night.
The car was later found
abandoned on McGregors Rd
in Bromley at 2.50am, with two
young people found by officers a
short time later.
Police also confirmed they are
also following positive lines of
inquiry in relation to two other
burglaries in the city.
One was at a vape store on
Main North Rd, Redwood, which
occurred shortly before 3am on
Tuesday.
Another was a liquor store on
Colombo St, Sydenham, which
was broken into about the same
time.
elephant
conservation
CHRIST’S COLLEGE student
Aaron Kwak is Thailand-bound
in December to take part in
an elephant conservation
programme.
The 15-year-old will be based at
Kui Buri National Park.
The international service
project supports better humanelephant
co-existence and also
contributes to the Tom Yum Project,
providing sustainable food
security for rural areas.
Aaron will be part of the
environmental team, planting
crops and also building park
ranger huts, hornbill nest boxes,
and gathering data on elephant
migration.
He goes to Thailand on the
back of finishing second in the
Otago University senior science
quiz, year 11 section.
Fellow Christ’s student Angus
Gifford, 17, achieved top mark in
the year 13 section.
They described the advanced
national science quiz as “challenging
but enjoyable”.
The competitive quiz tests logical
thought, general knowledge,
and scientific skills.
“The science quiz really covers
everything – from biology to
chemistry and physics to earth
sciences – so you need a range of
in-depth knowledge,” Angus said.
Both Angus and Aaron are also
committed to sharing their skills
and talents with others, being
involved in tutoring and community
projects.
Angus tutors fellow students
and is a member of Academe, a
community service programme
providing one-on-one tutoring
for the children of the victims of
the 2019 mosque attacks. He has
also driven an inaugural science,
technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) week at
college this year.
Trailblazing ‘GirlBosses’ encourage
• By Sasha Watson
STUDENTS FROM high
schools in the Western News area
have shined at the Canterbury
GirlBoss awards.
Christchurch Girls’ High
School student Bethany Crossan
(above) was awarded the GirlBoss
inclusion award, Burnside High
School’s Charlotte Mortlock
received the sports award, and St
Margaret’s College’s Millie Edwards
received the STEM award
(science, technology, engineering
and mathematics).
Bethany was recognised for her
efforts to include her Māori heritage
and culture into everyday life.
“I am passionate about providing
a voice for rangatahi Māori
and community. I’ve worked
with many (school) principals for
the last two years to create a more
inclusive environment,” she said.
“I have created many te reo resources
for staff, students and the
community, and have spoken on
the Māori panel for the Ministry
of Education.”
She has also initiated kaupapa,
such as creating a Matariki
display, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori
videos, and mentored tamariki to
become confident speakers and
Māori leaders.
“All my life, people have told
me that Māori aren’t academically
inclined and are only good
at sports,” she said.
“This motivated me to prove
them wrong – I have learnt to
celebrate my differences as a
superpower rather than hide my
being Māori.”
Bethany was awarded $1000
and she will put the money towards
further education.
“The awards are an amazing
opportunity,” she said. “Whether
you win an award or not, you are
still a girl boss and are capable of
inspiring others.”
SPORTS AWARD: Charlotte
Mortlock is a part of four
football teams, including
the Canterbury United
Pride Women’s team.
INCLUSION AWARD:
Bethany Crossan’s
superpower is her Māori
culture and she is proud of
Kōrero mai, let’s talk about our
Safer speed plan
Way safer for everyone
We’re planning to make more speed limit
changes in some areas across Christchurch.
Lower speeds can save lives and prevent serious injury.
Reducing our speed makes a major difference in a crash.
People make mistakes on our roads, and those mistakes
shouldn’t cost our neighbours, whānau or pets their lives.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have changed the way
speed limits are set. This gives us an opportunity to plan an
area-wide approach for speed changes.
We’re asking for feedback on our 10-year vision and
principles for safe speeds across Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula, as well as our first three years of implementation.
Thursday September 21 2023 5
young women to just go for it
Charlotte received the
GirlBoss sports award.
The GirlBoss awards are a
nationwide search for young
women aged 11 to 18 who are
leaders, role models and innovators
in categories such as community,
sports, arts and culture,
and innovation.
“It is a massive honour to be
awarded the sports award and to
have my hard work noticed and
acknowledged. It was definitely
worth it,” said Charlotte.
Charlotte was chosen as the recipient
of the award out of more
than 20 nominees; the award
with the most nominees.
Millie received the STEM
award for her love for thinking,
STEM AWARD: Millie Edwards is passionate about robotics, and was recognised as a GirlBoss for her efforts in competing
and tutoring over the last six years. She and robotics partner Bea Mcglashen won the Junior Robocup this year.
researching and creating.
“I have been working with
robotics for about six years,
after being asked to participate
in a team at Halswell Primary
School,” said the 15-year-old.
“I fell in love with it and now
it’s my passion. I’ve competed six
times at the Robocup Junior New
Zealand competition, held in
Auckland, and the EPro8 competition
through school.”
Millie is mentoring year 3-6
students in preparation for the
EPro8, and most recently at this
year’s competition, Millie was
first with her robotics partner,
Bea Mcglashen.
“Our three-minute robot
performance was inspired by
Abba, and we are very proud to
have won in the highest division,
the premier category,” said Millie.
After being nominated by St
Margaret’s teacher, Linda Chong,
Millie is proud to have her efforts
recognised.
“I have worked very hard over
the last few years, and it is nice to
have my achievements looked at
and be noticed,” she said.
“The GirlBoss awards ceremony
was an amazing event – thank
you to Alexia and Vicky from
GirlBoss, as well as StanTec, for
sponsoring the award and being
an amazing group of people.”
She too won $1000 and
will put the money towards
developing her not-for-profit
STEM programme and further
education.
“I’m in the concept designing
phase of this programme, which
is designed to encourage other
younger women to get into robotics.”
Meanwhile, Charlotte has been
contributing to the development
of younger women in football
in Christchurch, by working
with tamariki across three hubs
and coaching on the Fantails programme.
“I’ve been playing football
since I was seven-years-old,” said
Charlotte.
“I now play nationally for
the Canterbury United Pride
Women’s team.”
Hoping to fly to Sydney next
year and find a team to play with
and a homestay to take her in,
Charlotte will put the $1000 from
receiving the award towards
some of the costs.
“It is very expensive over there,
but this will be a great help. If
any challenge comes or goes your
way,” she said.
“Grab it with both hands and
just go for it.”
Ravioli, cod, frangipane propels
young chef into the limelight
PAN FRIED Murray cod helped
Joosje Bouman stand out in a
prestigious chef competition in
Sydney.
The 22-year-old St Albans
resident was awarded three
bronze medals, one for each of
her courses, at the Nestlé Golden
Chef’s Hat Award competition.
It was her first time competing
at the grand finals. Bouman won
the South Island regional heat of
the competition earlier this year.
She decided to enter the
competition because of the opportunity
it presented to further
her skills and connect with other
young chefs.
Bouman, who works as a sous
chef at Kaisar Brew Garden,
impressed the judges with the
execution and delivery of her
three-course menu to earn the
haul of bronze medals.
She was up against 11 other
young top chefs from across
Australia and New Zealand who
were all vying to be crowned
Golden Chef of the Year. Along
with the other competitors, she
had to develop and perfect a
three course menu in the lead up
to the live cook off.
Bouman’s menu was a ravioli
entrée with a homemade ricotta
and spinach mix on a tomato
TASTY: Two of Joosje Bouman’s courses that helped her
take three bronze medals – pan fried Murray cod and a
caramel frangipane dessert.
base sauce, served with a shaved
asparagus salad. Her main was
pan-fried Murray cod, served
with a beurre blanc, gremolata,
pickled mushroom, and crispy
potatoes. For dessert, she created
a frangipane, caramelised pear,
caramel sauce, macadamia, and
oat crumb served with a tuille.
Chef judge Darren Wright said
being part of the Golden Chef’s
Hat competition gives the next
generation of chefs like Bouman
the opportunity to put themselves
to the test, improve their
cooking skills and connect with
like-minded chefs as well as the
broader industry.
“Joosje delivered some stand
out dishes on the day while
under immense pressure. Just to
make it this far and then to win
medals is a tremendous achievement
that she should be hugely
proud of,” he said.
The overall winner of the event
was Melbourne chef Jimmy Han.
ADVERTORIAL
Bellbird Hearing
Celebrating three years of ear
health and wellbeing
Kiwi owned Bellbird Hearing, located
at 240 Ilam Road, is celebrating three
years of providing hearing services to
the people and families of Canterbury.
Hearing is a primary sense which we
often take for granted until we are
affected and start wondering why our
hearing does not seem like it used to.
Three years ago, their journey began
with a vision to transform the lives of
those struggling with hearing loss, and
this month, they celebrate – Bellbird
Hearing’s third birthday. This anniversary
marks not just the passage of time,
but the countless stories of improved
hearing, enhanced quality of life and the
bonds they have forged with their clients.
It is a common misconception that
hearing loss happens either at birth or
manifests in old age, but the reality is
that hearing loss is a medical condition
that can occur at any stage of life. There
can be many reasons for hearing loss and
the sooner it is diagnosed, the better the
outcome for the client.
Like a regular checkup at the doctor or
repeat eye tests for those with glasses,
it is important to maintain hearing tests
every 12–18 months. The team at Bellbird
Hearing are experienced to work with you
for all your hearing needs. They can fit
any brand and type of hearing product
compared to other clinics who are
restricted by their associations. Being an
independent clinic does not restrict them,
which means whatever device you have,
Bellbird Hearing can help.
Come in and meet with audiologist
Caroline, who is a full member of the NZ
Audiological Society. She can work with
ACC, veteran affairs, and access funding
through the Ministry of Health.
Commonly, ears can be blocked with
wax. Meet with their experienced ear
nurse Anna who is an expert at cleaning
ears with a gentle touch.
Clinic Manager and Audiologist Juliet is
so proud of the Bellbird Hearing team for
the work they do and the lives they affect.
In honour of Bellbird Hearing’s
birthday, they are having a giveaway on
Competition
and banter at
house auction
• From page 1
“They wish to get
into the psyche of their
competitors by making
them seem that they are
supremely confident and
have bottomless budgets,”
said Patton.
But the young couple
held strong and was
the last remaining
bidder when the
auction paused
at $1.56 million
for negotiation.
The auction then
resumed and was
announced on the
market at $1.58m,
which is what it sold
for.
Patton said the fivebedroom,
three-bathroom
home on a large 1599 sq
m section attracted plenty
of interest with about 100
groups viewing it during
the auction campaign run
by Bayleys agents Adam
Heazlewood and Jessica
Phibbs.
It was a similar situation
for a large family home
on Dyers Pass Rd, which
attracted young couples
and mums and dads when
Mark
McGoldrick
it was called at Harcourts
Holmwood auction rooms.
The four-bedroom,
two-bathroom home,
which was marketed for
the first time in 30 years
by Harcourts listing agents
Jack and Steven Marshall,
had 150 groups through
its open homes and
attracted secondhome
buyers.
Harcourts
auctioneer Mark
McGoldrick said:
“There were about
half a dozen bidders
on that and a real
good ding dong.”
Bids got down
to small increments of
$500 and $100,000, he
said. It was announced
on the market at $1.16m
and buyers kept trying to
outbid each other until the
hammer swung down at
$1.256m.
“There was a lot of
banter and things, it was
quite fun.”
Meanwhile, a neglected
property on Hoon Hay Rd
desperate for some TLC
after it had been empty
for a year also attracted
several bidders at the
Bayleys auction.
The five-bedroom,
two-bathroom home on a
large 1239 sq m was sold
on an “as is where is” basis
due to years of deferred
maintenance.
Bayleys listing agent
Duncan Absolum
marketed the property at
developers, investors or
anyone prepared to put in
the hard work to bring it
up to scratch. Photographs
of the property show trees
encroaching on the front
half of the house.
More than four bidders
competed for the fivebedroom
home. Bidding
opened at $450,000,
it paused at $575,000
before coming back on
the market and selling
for $650,000 – more than
$300,000 less than its RV.
Harcourts Grenadier
also saw plenty of
competition for at auction
with an “as is, where is”
property on Poulson St,
in Addington, selling for
$610,000 after six bidders
battled it out.
Gowns from Eastern Europe with
• By Sasha Watson
A ‘WEDDING Gowns through
the Ages’ exhibition will display
25 to 30 dresses, including two
Eastern European heritage
wedding gowns.
The exhibition will be held as a
fundraiser for the 30-plus-yearold
Diamond Harbour Medical
Centre.
Event organisers Robyn
Hedges and Ruth Willis will be
bringing their own gowns.
“The gown I wore for my 1969
wedding was handmade by me,
in New Zealand. I also
made the motherof-the-bride
dress
and my daughter’s
wedding gown,
about 21 years
ago,” said
Robyn.
Ruth will
be exhibiting
an intricately
designed
wedding gown of silk taffeta from
1878, which was worn by her
great-grandmother Jessie Dallas
nee Mathieson, at her wedding.
“It was my family’s wish
that this wedding gown
would be treasured and
shared by the family’s
future generations,
and not be given to a
museum,” said Ruth.
The idea for the
exhibition came from the
recent celebration of Ruth’s
60th
wedding
anniversary.
“I had a
vision to
bring
the dresses to a younger
generation, and thought an
exhibition of different, older
and unique gowns would
be a good way to
fundraise,” she said.
“It has just grown
from there.”
Elena Chomic,
from Lithuania,
moved to
Diamond Harbour
11 years ago with
her husband,
Georg.
She is showcasing two Eastern
European gowns that belong to a
friend.
“These gowns were bought and
transported from Ukraine in
2018 – they are both unique and
cultural to the urban wedding
gown fashion in the mid-20th
century,” said Elena.
“Eastern European women
used designed costumes for
different occasions such as
festivals, but the wedding gown
was more decorated, interesting,
and special.”
“The gowns were made of linen
and or wool, and are often very
heavy to wear,” said Elena.
Elena said the history
of the gowns is special,
as they were handmade
by the mother and
grandmother
together for the
bride.
HIGHLIGHT: Elena Chomic
will present this handmade
Eastern European wedding
gown, along with a second
gown, at the Wedding
Dresses Through the Ages
exhibition.
“The first gown was made for
more than $1000. The second
gown is more plain and simple,
but it is also handmade, with
little beads,” she said.
Elena will also be showcasing
wedding ornaments and decorations
from Lithuania, Romania
and Ukraine.
The exhibition will include a
60-year-old horseshoe, an oldfashioned
walking sticks, a glory box,
and linen and floral
arrangements.
“People who travel from
Europe have different wedding
traditions than that of New
Zealand; they often have made a
special towel – which is used for
bread,” said Elena.
“I am happy to show the
gowns, especially to my friends
and family who have also immigrated
to New Zealand, as they
are a part of my history, heritage
and culture.”
The exhibition also features a
designer gown.
Said Robyn: “We also have a
Laura Ashley dress, a dress from
1912 and another from the
1920s, and a black wedding
gown.”
All funds raised will go to the
building.
LITERARY EXPERT Morrin
Rout will be chairing an evening
with best-selling author Charity
Norman, ahead of the launch of
Together We Read for 2023.
Rout has spent more than 25
years organising literary events
and festivals, and presenting
book programmes on radio.
She is the former director of the
Hagley Writers Institute and a
through public libraries with a
featured title for two weeks each
year.
As part of the programme,
booklovers can participate in
online discussions and get involved
said Norman.
“Together We Read is a terrific
program – what an honour to be
Friendly gym provides a sense of belonging
For those people considering joining
a gym but are not sure if it’s for them,
Wigram Culture Fitness offers an
experience unlike any other.
As owner Heather Peterson explains:
“We have created an environment at
our gym in Wigram that is supportive.
Our members come from a wide
range of ages, from fathers and sons
to mothers and daughters, through to
husbands and wives in their 80s.
“Our gym provides a sense of
belonging and an environment where
everyone feels welcome and part of the
Culture Fitness family.
“We have various workout zones and
gym facilities and, in conjunction with
these, our gym offers Express Fitness
Lanes combined with the Fitness App
Myzone.”
Finding the best gym can be compared
to forging a new relationship. With a bit
of personal reflection, pre-planning,
and some vetting, you will be on the
path to what could be a match made in
heaven (at least when it comes to this
key element of your fitness journey).
Remember, you are investing your
time, money, and energy into a gym,
and you need to be certain that you
have made the best choice for you
and your training goals. You may be
enticed to base your decision on online
reviews or friends’ recommendations,
and while that’s an excellent starting
point, there should be a few more
components to consider. Here at
Wigram Culture fitness we want you to
come in and have a look around, and
make sure we are the best fit for your
Fitness Journey.
“People are sometimes fearful of being
watched and judged at a gym,” Heather
says, “but Wigram Culture Fitness is
not like that. We’re full of locals of all
shapes and sizes, ages and ethnicities.
“Everyone is on a different journey,
so come and share yours with us and
Tyro makes waves with back to
• By Jaime Cunningham
A FRANTIC week surfing the
east coast of Australia has paid
off for Jack Tyro, who achieved
his goal of competing in a World
Surf League longboarding event
for the first time.
Year 12 Hagley College student
Tyro finished 17th equal in the
Bioglan Bells Beach Longboard
Classic, 100km south-west of
Melbourne, after winning
two other events in the 48 hours
prior.
Reaching the pro-tour
competition had been a longterm
goal for 16-year-old Tyro,
who said competing at the event
was an overwhelming moment.
“While surfing against the
world’s best I felt nothing but awe
as I sat beside them in the heat,”
he said.
“Knowing that I was making
them uncomfortable and giving
them a challenge was a thrill in
itself.”
It was a hectic week for Tyro,
who won the junior (under-18)
division at the Byron Bay Surf
Festival on August 27, before
jetting off to Melbourne eight
hours later.
The next day, Tyro was back
in the water, and managed to
narrowly win the final of the
Bells Beach Longboard Classic
trials.
Held at Torquay Point, Tyro
scored 6.00 on his first wave
alongside Australian Clinton
Guest. Although Guest moved
into first place with his next two
waves, Tyro claimed the title
with a 6.50 ride to win by 1.05
points.
As a result, Tyro qualified
for the Bioglan Bells Beach
Longboard Classic with a
wildcard.
Tyro said he didn’t realise he
“Everything I had done had
come down to that moment.”
At the Classic, Tyro finished
third in his heat, scoring 7.10
from his third and fifth waves.
Although he was knocked out
in the elimination round, Tyro
scored an improved 10.00 while
surfing against American Tony
Silvagni to finish 17th.
Tyro was the only New
Zealander to compete at the
event.
His goal for next year is
to qualify on the permanent
roster of the World Surf League
Longboard tour.
Tyro would like to thank
everyone who supported him,
and particularly the Canterbury
Sports Foundation which funded
his flights and accommodation in
Melbourne.
He applied to access the
scholarship fund before the event,
with the goal of qualifying for the
World Surf League.
Tyro is now preparing to head
to the New Zealand national
scholastic surfing championships
in Gisborne next week.
He will be one of 12
Cantabrians at the event where
they will compete for individual
and team honours.
Geayley, Davis take
top netball awards
• By Jaime Cunningham
DENISE Geayley’s “invaluable”
dedication to netball was
recognised by the Selwyn
Netball Centre during Sunday’s
end of year prizegiving, where
she claimed the award for
outstanding service.
A stalwart in Selwyn netball,
this year Geayley was a premier
umpire, the centre’s player
development coordinator, the
under-18 representative head
coach and Halswell Rugby
League senior A’s coach.
As well as umpiring Selwyn’s
top grades twice a week, Geayley
is an umpire coach at the centre.
She is also the coach and junior
coordinator at Selwyn.
Centre manager Tash Dillon
said there are no words to
describe the level of admiration
she has for Geayley.
“The mahi Denise puts
into this centre is absolutely
invaluable and I truly believe
without her dedication, we
wouldn’t be delivering the
quality netball experiences that
we are today,” she said.
This year alone, Dillon said
Geayley had contributed to
Selwyn netball in more than six
different roles.
“I don’t think there’s a single
PROUD: Denise Geayley and Rebecca Davis (inset) receiving
awards from Selwyn Netball Centre manager Tash Dillon.
person in this room, possibly
even our wider community,
that hasn’t been blessed in
some way by Denise’s wealth
of knowledge, kind and caring
heart, experience and dedication,
warm and compassionate
words . . . the list could go on,”
she said.
The awards afternoon at the
Tai Tapu Hotel also recognised
premier umpire Rebecca Davis
as she consistently demonstrates
Selwyn’s values of community,
enjoyment, respect and integrity.
“Rebecca is an absolute ray of
sunshine and brings with her so
much joy and energy wherever
she goes,” said Dillon.
She is one of Selwyn’s newest
umpire coaches who recently
achieved her Zone practical
umpiring qualification and is a
Templeton committee member.
Mock exams
crucial for
derived grades
September 2023
Diverse
cultures
celebrated
Wear Your Culture Day was organised by
Year 12 Health students Janel, Skyler, Rieya
and Shiela.
The focus was to educate and celebrate
with our students about a variety of
cultures This was a fantastic day and we
are proud to be a multicultural school.
Commitment,
Achievement,
Resilience,
Respect
Tēnā koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all
Hornby High School students have hit the exam trail,
with a few nerves, a bit of stress, and the challenge and
excitement of being successful the order of the day.
All senior students who are entered for external NCEA
examinations undertake derived grade examinations (DGEs)
prior to sitting their NCEA end-of-year examinations, which
commence in November. All schools across Aotearoa
New Zealand have a week of DGEs. It is a New Zealand
Qualifications Authority requirement.
During September our awesome students started their
examinations in an environment that mirrors the same
conditions they expect to see when they sit their NCEA
externals in November. This is a great training ground for
our students and also ensures all our processes are in place
for NCEA examinations later in the year.
If a student is unable to sit an end-of-year NCEA external
examination for any of the reasons listed below, then they
will be eligible to apply for a derived grade. This is why
successfully ‘sitting’ the derived grade examinations is so
important for our students.
Here are some reasons why a student might need to apply
for a derived grade:
• Passing of family/whānau member
• Hospitalisation
• National representation in a sport, academic or cultural
event (during the examinations)
• Unwell on the day of the examination (requires a medical
certificate)
Study tips for examinations:
• Create a study plan – starting today
• Read over any work completed in class
• Check if there are any study guides
(https://studyit.govt.nz/)
• Get a study buddy
• Make sure that after-school work commitments allow
time for study (change your rostered work hours if
needed)
• Talk with your teachers if you need further support.
Sports thriving at Hornby High School
Our sports teams have excelled this year, with many teams placing first at the Canterbury Association of Intermediate and Middle
Schools (CAIMS) tournament, as well as amazing results from our rugby league, volleyball and basketball teams.
In an innovative partnership
between Hornby High School,
students are breaking new
ground by gaining first-hand, onsite
experience right at the heart
of construction projects in the
Hornby community.
Guided by Miles Construction
project managers, students
gain insights into construction
techniques, project management,
and safety protocols.
This initiative not only equips
students with knowledge of the
exposes them to diverse roles
within the industry. These site
visits will continue into the first
half of Term 4 before our seniors go on exam leave.
Zonta conference inspiring women
MORE THAN 160 business
and professional women from
throughout New Zealand
will be in Christchurch later
this month for the biennial
Zonta International District 16
Conference.
Well-known locally for
activities like the annual Zonta
Sports Awards, recognising
secondary school sportspeople,
and the Yellow Rose Run/Walk
(coming up on October 8 in
Hagley Park), Zonta has 27 clubs
nationwide. Their goal is to
build a better world for women
and girls, locally, nationally and
worldwide, through service and
advocacy.
District 16 Governor Phillippa
Jacobs-Lory, a member of the
Zonta Club of Christchurch-
Canterbury
says the
national
conference
this weekend
provides a
chance for
like-minded
Phillippa
Jacobs-Lory
women to
learn, to
network, and
to be reinvigorated.
“It’s an honour to be holding
the conference here – Deputy
Mayor Pauline Cotter is going
to open the programme – and
the whole weekend has been
designed to be inspiring for
LIGHTS: As part of the ‘Zonta says no to violence against women’ campaign, Christchurch buildings have previously been
lit up in orange.
everyone. Zontians in New
Zealand are doing terrific work
for women and girls, here and
overseas. Our power lies in the
fact that we’re an international
organisation with the ability
to support programmes
worldwide,” she said.
“This conference is going
to provide an opportunity for
us to learn more about our
advocacy work for women’s
rights and how we are making
a tangible difference for many
families in Aotearoa New
Zealand, especially through
our current district project,
the Grandparents Raising
Grandchildren Trust.”
Trust chief executive Kate
Bundle will give a summary of
the specific projects funded and
the outcomes delivered and a
“surprise” keynote speaker will
highlight topical issues during
the weekend.
“Close to Zonta’s heart is
the ‘Zonta says no to violence
against women’ campaign,” said
Bundle.
“We’re strongly involved each
November 25
to December
10 with the
16 days of
advocacy
surrounding
this campaign
and its use
Kate Bundle of the colour
orange to
represent a brighter future. In the
past we’ve had various buildings,
including the control tower
at Christchurch International
Airport, Canterbury Museum
and the Christchurch Art
Gallery, lit up in orange during
this time.
“At conference we’re taking
this a step further by asking
everyone who attends to bring a
pair of orange shoes to serve as a
symbol representing the women
who have tragically lost their
lives due to domestic violence.”
Keeping clocks
and watches in
perfect time
While digital timekeeping has become more
widely used in modern society, it seems many people
still have a traditional grandfather clock in their
home, as Geoff of Ilam Watchmakers is finding.
Increasingly over recent months he has been called
out to repair these stately timepieces. For small
repairs, he says, the job can be done on-site, and for
more complicated repair work, the clocks are taken
to the workshop.
Geoff and his wife Michelle have owned and
operated the Waimairi Road business for 22 years,
offering not only clock and watch repairs but also
an extensive selection of new watches and clocks
for sale. Staff in the busy workshop range from
technicians to fully qualified watchmakers, while the
admin staff keep things ticking over efficiently.
As summer approaches Geoff says it is important
for people who wear their watch in the water to
have it pressure tested, and the gaskets replaced if
necessary.
On the retail side, the new
range of watches for summer
has been arriving at Ilam
Watchmakers, and includes
stylish designs from wellknown
brands like Citizen, Ice,
Lorus, Casio and Boccia.
For those who prefer a more
nostalgic style of watch, there
is also a good selection of refurbished watches,
including pocket watches. Alternatively, customers
can enquire about trading in their old watch on a
new model.
Since its establishment more than two decades
ago, Ilam Watchmakers has always been located in
the block of shops on the corner of Waimairi Rd and
Maidstone Rd, which Geoff and Michelle believe is
the ideal position.
The store is open Monday to Friday 8am-5.30pm
and Saturday 9am-1pm. Phone (03) 357 1002.
Game-changing cauliflower dishes
Cauliflower latkes
Makes 12
Latkes
2 potatoes, waxy variety (nadine),
scrubbed
½ medium onion
1 medium-sized cauliflower, cut
into florets
½ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp ground coriander
1 egg
2 spring onions, sliced finely
salt and pepper
Coriander yogurt
150g unsweetened yogurt
1 bunch coriander, roughly
chopped
8 mint leaves, finely chopped
½ lemon, juice
1 garlic clove, crushed
pinch salt and pepper
Method
• Make the yogurt sauce by
combining all the ingredients and
mixing well. Leave in the fridge
until required.
• Chop the cauliflower florets, or
use a food processor, into a fine
crumb-like texture. Put in a large
bowl.
• Grate the potatoes and onions.
Squeeze in a clean cloth to remove
as much liquid as possible. Add to
the cauliflower.
• Add the turmeric, ground
coriander, salt, pepper, egg and
spring onion and mix well to
combine.
• Generously cover the bottom of a
large heavy-based fry pan with oil
and heat. When hot, add generous
spoonfuls of mixture. When
golden (about three minutes),
carefully turn over and cook
the other side for a further two
minutes or until golden.
• Remove and drain on kitchen
paper. Serve warm with the
coriander yogurt.
Cauliflower pizza
Serves 2-4
Base
500g cauliflower (about 1
medium)
200g broccoli
2 eggs
50g parmesan cheese, grated
75g ground almonds
salt and pepper
½ tsp dried oregano
Topping
3 Tbsp tomato pizza sauce
2 Tbsp oil
200g broccoli florets, blanched
briefly
1 small red onion, sliced thinly
2 cloves garlic, sliced thinly
200g spinach leaves
100g mozzarella
20g parmesan cheese, shaved or
grated finely
pinch chilli flakes
extra virgin olive oil (for drizzling)
Method
• Preheat oven to 200degC.
• Remove the stalk from the
cauliflower and broccoli and
discard, and cut into chunks.
Keep half of the broccoli for the
topping. Blitz the cauliflower and
broccoli in stages so it resembles
rice. Transfer to a bowl, cover with
cling film and microwave on high
for 5-6 minutes until softened.
Drain and tip on to a clean cloth
and squeeze tightly to remove any
excess moisture. Tip into a bowl
and add the ground almonds,
oregano, seasoning and eggs. Mix
well to form a dough.
• Line a baking tray with
greaseproof paper and grease
lightly with oil.
• Mould the cauliflower mixture
so it forms a large round or 2 small
rounds if desired. Bake for 15-20
minutes or until golden.
• While the base is cooking,
prepare the topping.
• Heat a frying pan to medium and
add 2 tablespoon of oil. Add the
sliced onion and garlic and cook
until the onion has softened (3-5
minutes). Add the broccoli and
cook for a further 3 minutes. Add
the spinach and chilli. Season well
with salt and pepper and remove
from the heat.
• When the base is ready, carefully
spread with tomato sauce and
sprinkle over the greens. Finish
with cheese and bake for 15
minutes or until the cheese has
melted and the pizza looks golden
and delicious.
• Finish with a little more freshly
shaved parmesan and a drizzle of
extra virgin olive oil.
Cauliflower hummus
½ head (700g) cauliflower, cut
into florets
4-6 cloves garlic, peeled
80ml olive oil
½ tsp salt
1 tsp ground cumin
pinch smoked paprika
2-3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp tahini
To serve
2 cloves garlic, peeled and
sliced thinly
2 Tbsp olive oil
small handful parsley, roughly
chopped
Method
• Place a steamer basket over
a pot of boiling water. Add the
cauliflower florets and garlic
and steam until tender (about
15 mins). Remove and allow
to cool.
•Place the garlic, oil, salt,
cumin, paprika, 2 Tbsp lemon
juice and tahini in a food
processor and blend until silky
and smooth.
• To serve, heat the garlic and
olive oil until the garlic starts
to go golden brown. Remove
from the heat and pour over
the hummus. Sprinkle parsley
on top and serve.

Share and Celebrate
Our Stories at the CWEA
Join us at the Canterbury
WEA (Workers Educational
Association) as we celebrate
Christchurch Heritage Week.
This year’s theme is “Our
Stories of Living and Learning”
and we invite anyone who has a
fond memory of the WEA (be
it newly created or stored away
for some time) to come along
and share it with our recording
team. We are working with the
wonderful Plains FM to create a
special radio show and podcast
– so get involved and help us
create a piece of history that
will tell our stories tomorrow.
We are also working with the
Canterbury Museum to bring
you a special look back at this
much loved Museum’s long
history. Author John Wilson
will then join us for a talk on
the topic of his recent book:
Canterbury University 150
years.
The CWEA has its home
at 59 Gloucester Street,
Christchurch and has
been delivering adult and
community education to the
people of Christchurch since
1915. Today they are visited
by over a thousand individuals
each year. Four terms of
programmes offer a broad
range of courses, talks and
workshops. Themes of social
and environmental justice and
encouraging citizens to think
deeply about the issues of the
day feature each term.
For full details of how to get
involved and to sign up for
these talks and all our Term 4
events, workshops and courses
Spring into learning at Risingholme
The change in season comes with a
chance to reflect, reset, and perhaps try
something new!
Whether you’ve been thinking about
picking up a craft, a new hobby, or are
keen to upskill with an eye towards
taking the next step in your career,
Risingholme Learning offers a range
of workshops and short courses to suit
your needs and goals. Our courses cater
to a range of interests and give you the
chance to try something new in a relaxed
environment guided by our experienced
subject tutors.
Delivered across four locations in
Christchurch and developed with a
range of abilities in mind, our courses
are open to anyone aged 16 and over
who is not currently at school, regardless
of educational background.
Enrolments are now open for Term 4
and we have several new workshops and
courses available to sign up to, including
a four-week course based at Hornby
High School centred around digital
storytelling. Everyone has a story to tell,
and in an increasingly digital world there
are many tools available to help bring
these stories to life. Come learn how to
unpack the process of storytelling from
start to finish using common digital
applications. The final term of the year
also brings the lead up to the summer
social season and Christmas. In our
‘Making Felted Jewellery’ weekend
workshop you’ll make wearable art that
you can proudly show off (or gift) to
friends and family. It’s open to anyone
new to felting and keen to learn as well
as more experienced felters wanting to
develop their repertoire.
For those interested in life drawing
with a slight twist, we run a life drawing
in costume course led by a tutor whose
background in theatre and textile
design makes her the perfect guide
for learning to sketch both form and
fabric in a friendly and supportive
environment. Grow your skills, nurture
your mind, and enrol in one of over 300
courses at Risingholme today. Details at
Subaru’s smallest SUV still class-leading
SUBARU’S smallest SUV, the
XV, has been rebranded as the
Crosstrek and offers superior
refinement, safety and standard
equipment to its predecessor. It
retains its class-leading off-road
abilities, built around Subaru’s
legendary symmetrical AWD
system.
The Crosstrek may be all new
in many departments, but its ageing
normally aspirated 2.0-litre
Boxer engine isn’t one of them. It
isn’t the most vibrant of performers
and is comfortably upstaged
by a bevy of newer engines
offered by its rivals. Visually the
Crosstrek looks the modern SUV
part, with the mandatory rugged
cladding and roof rails as well as
a palate of bold colours for those
serious about standing out from
the motoring crowd.
The Crosstrek has taken a
sizeable leap in price over its predecessor
which had a sub $40k
www.drivesouth.co.nz
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
model. Not with this newbie
though. It starts at an ambitious
$46,990 for the e-Boxer Hybrid,
while the higher spec petrol Premium
supplied for this road test
retails for $48,990. If that isn’t
enough to make some would-be
buyers grimace, the $51,990 ask
on the Hybrid Premium most
likely will.
Performance from the 115kW
direct injection 2.0-litre petrol
motor won’t set the pulse racing,
but does a passable job. Whether
that’s enough given its premium
pricing only time will tell. The
latest version of this engine has
undergone yet another round
of improvements over its 15+
years. The changes have created a
noticeably quieter and smoother
power plant, but in-gear and
standing start acceleration
remains leisurely. Once up and
rolling at open road speeds it’s a
capable enough cruiser, and rolls
Incorporating
best motorbuys
back the kilometres effortlessly
enough on long trips. I feel this
engine is a bit of a treading water
effort. One of the best things
about Crosstrek petrol-only
models is an enhanced and sweet
gear-shifting version of Subaru’s
Lineartronic Transmission.
A wide, flat load floor with
a maximum opening width of
1042mm enables easier cargo.
Another plus is the fold down
rear seat that splits 60/40, providing
a wider range of seating and
load carrying configurations.
Size-wise this model is marginally
larger than before, but far
from best in class with limited
rear seat head and legroom, for
those of above average height.
Many potential buyers will
be tempted to throw their new
car cash behind the Crosstrek
when they check out the updated
technology. Leading the way is a
larger 11.6-inch portrait infotainment
touchscreen with improved
graphics, wireless smartphone
integration, and voice command
functionality. In a first for Subaru,
a 360-degree panoramic view
monitor has also been added to
improve camera and monitor
performance. Two additional
USB ports are provided for rear
seat passengers and can be found
at the back of the centre console.
Heading up a strong list of
safety features is the latest take
on Subaru’s EyeSight technology,
now standard on all Crosstreks.
This improved system uses highresolution
stereo cameras, as
well as a wide-angle monocular
camera, recognizing potential
dangers and obstacles ahead and
warns the driver to act, or even
automatically intervene.
Front and rear springs and
dampers have been retuned
for improved ride comfort and
driving stability under hard
cornering. A proven formula
for decades, Subaru’s legendary
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
resolutely plants the vehicle on
the road providing a safer, more
engaging, and balanced driving
experience across a greater variety
of surfaces.
The Crosstrek retains its classleading
ground clearance, ensuring
sufficient daylight between
the vehicle’s under belly and
ground below to safely negotiate
deep ruts and other confronting
surfaces. Despite such a generous
measure of ground clearance,
body roll is kept neatly in check
during brisk cornering. The
steering is well weighted and
provides plenty of road feel. Most
importantly though, it convincingly
delivers a sense that as the
driver you are in command, and
the steering is your obedient
servant, devoted to give you the
best driving experience it can.
Rating out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 7; Build Quality
GST OFF FRUIT & VEGES
Labour will take GST off fruit and vegetables
from 1 April next year, saving families around
$20 a month. Food prices are stubbornly
high, due to factors like high global inflation
and the extreme weather events New
Zealand experienced this year. By removing
GST from fresh and frozen fruit and vege,
we’re making it easier for families to put
healthy food on the table.
FREE BASIC DENTAL CARE TO
UNDER 30-YEAR-OLDS
Kiwis should have access to dental care, without
worrying about the bill. Labour will begin New Zealand’s
journey to universal dental care by expanding free basic
dental care to under 30-year-olds. This means access to
free annual check-ups, cleans, X-rays, basic fillings and
extractions –helping hundreds of thousands of Kiwis.
PROTECTING FREE
PRESCRIPTIONS
This year, Labour removed the $5 prescription
fee to make it easier for New Zealanders to
access the medicines they need. This is
already making a real difference for
households across the country, particularly
those who have multiple prescriptions to fill
on a regular basis.
