PROFILE FOR UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS
2023-2024
HKA HIGHLIGHTS
• Global Citizenship: Global Citizen Diploma (GCD) is an externally recognised portfolio-based credential developed
by a consortium of international schools. Dedicated to nurturing intercultural communication, global understanding,
community engagement and academic rigour, students work towards earning their GCD over a four-year period of
time. HKA is the only school in Hong Kong that offers the GCD.
• Pathways to Individual Excellence: HKA students are supported to pursue their best-fit pathway to graduation. All
HKA graduates earn the HKA Diploma and GCD Certificate. On average, 90% of Grade 11 and 12 students also
pursue the full IB Diploma or IB courses as a third credential. In 2023, 17% of graduates earned a bilingual IB diploma.
• Future-Focused Education: The fleX learning programme in Grades 6-10 provides students with dedicated time and
support to explore, develop and enact projects intended to make a positive impact in their communities.
• Robust Co-curriculum: Over 50 student leadership groups, clubs, organisations and athletic teams are on offer.
• State-of-the-art Facility: The purpose-built campus is the only whole-school facility to have been awarded Gold
BEAM Plus status by the Green Building Council of Hong Kong. This award recognises the school’s sustainable
operational procedures and environmentally-friendly design.
• Secondary school students must earn a minimum of 23 Carnegie Credits to graduate with an HKA Diploma.
• HKA is a truly international school, and as such experiences transience in its grade 9-12 population. With this in
mind, we do not rank students within a graduating class, provide percentile/decile information or convert numerical
scores to GPA equivalencies.
• HKA courses are semester based. Students earn 0.5 credit for each semester of a completed course of a grade 3 or higher.
• Transfer credits are awarded upon verification of transcripts or school reports from prior schools. Students are
awarded 0.5 credit per semester of learning.
• Some credit requirements may be waived to support a student’s individual pathway to excellence. Waivers, if present,
are indicated on the transcript.
• Global Citizen Diploma (GCD) elements specific to each student are included in the transcript.
HKA’s Secondary School prides itself on mentoring students to reach their full potential through individualised attention
tailored to their skills, interests and aspirations. Faculty members are dedicated to students’ well-being and academic
success and take the time to guide and support them as they make key decisions that impact their futures. Wherever their
individual pathways to success may take them, HKA endeavours to help students identify, develop and realise their goals.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME RESULTS
UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE APPLICATION GUIDELINES
• HKA believes that students and their families should make well-informed and reasonable university and college
application choices. As such, HKA encourages students to apply to no more than ten institutions. Admissions Offices
receiving an application from an HKA student can be assured it is a serious application that reflects much thought
and research.
• HKA treats Early Decision (ED) as a global agreement; therefore, students withdraw applications from all other
institutions if admitted under ED.
