Outrage over rapists’
$900k legal aid bill
• By Anna Leask and
Katie Harris
TAXPAYERS HAVE footed
a legal aid bill of almost
$900,000 for the defence of
Mama Hooch rapist brothers
Danny and Roberto Jaz – and
with an appeal on the horizon,
the total could be set to rise
significantly.
The gulf in
public funding
for the defence
compared
to financial
compensation
and assistance
Sophie
Brown
for the victims,
has Sophie
Brown – the
only victim
to drop her statutory name
suppression in the case –
feeling “disgusted” and
claiming more should be done
for survivors.
Sydney-born siblings Danny
Jaz, 40, and Roberto Jaz, 38,
were jailed in August after
being convicted of 69 charges
between them, including rape,
sexual violation, indecent
assault, stupefying, disabling,
making intimate recordings
of women without their
knowledge or consent and
supplying illicit drugs.
The brothers, described in
court as prolific and predatory
offenders, targeted female
patrons and staff at their
family bar in the central
city, drugging and sexually
assaulting them.
Danny Jaz was sentenced to
16 and a half years in prison
and his brother to 17 years.
Both were ordered to serve
50 per cent of the total sentence
before they are eligible for
parole.
They are both appealing
against their convictions and
sentences.
The court heard that
Roberto Jaz did not accept his
convictions and did not believe
he had done anything wrong.
Neither brother showed any
remorse at any stage of the
proceedings.
Brown said the amount of
legal aid for the case made her
“feel sad, quite frankly”.
Hoff, Darby find home on Bealey Ave
PHOTO: CCC
TRIBUTE: David Hasselhoff, Rhys Darby, Jacob Root and
Cole Ferrand with the mural at 235 Bealey Ave.
THE HOFF’S fleeting visit to
Christchurch now has a lasting
reminder.
Two artists surprised
Baywatch star David Hasselhoff
and comedian Rhys Darby
when with a tribute artwork
when they were in the city last
week.
Hasselhoff and Darby are
filming a television show in
New Zealand – and Jacob Root,
23, and Cole Ferrand, 22, were
asked to be part of the show.
Root and Ferrand showed
the stars around the city’s street
art then surprised them with
their own tribute piece painted
on a Chorus cabinet on Bealey
Ave.
Root said Hasselhoff and
Darby were awesome, friendly,
and stoked with their creation.
Hasselhoff was also spotted
in central Christchurch last
Tuesday afternoon, where he
posed for a photo on High St,
opposite the ONE NZ building.
The Knight Rider actor had a
film crew with him.
Hasselhoff and Darby were
also spotted at Invercargill
Airport last Sunday where they
caught a flight to Stewart Island.
“The Hoff” and Darby are
understood to be filming an
upcoming travel series and
interviewed residents on the
island.
Police seek man after
Mobil armed robbery
POLICE APPEAR to have
identified a person they want
to speak to in connection with
a service station robbery – but
they can’t find him.
Sydenham Mobil on Colombo
St was held up on Saturday and
the alleged offender escaped on
a bike.
Police released CCTV footage
of the man and his bike in the
hope someone will recognise
him.
“A person of interest has been
identified, and inquiries are
ongoing, including to locate
them,” police said yesterday.
“We believe he is able to assist
us with our inquiries.”
The aggravated robbery
happened about 8.50am.
“A man entered the Mobil
service station in Sydenham
demanding cash and cigarettes
and threatened the sole
attendant with a weapon,” police
said.
“He then fled on a black
Milazo mountain bike, pedalling
west down Milton St. The store
attendant was uninjured, but
they are understandably shaken
and upset by the experience.”
• Anyone who recognises
the man in the CCTV
photos, or remembers
seeing a man on a
black mountain bike in
Sydenham between 8.30-
Oil spill cause
for concern
ENVIRONMENT Canterbury is
worried big swells will continue to
hamper the removal of a fishing
boat stranded off the coast of
Banks Peninsula.
The 25m Austro Carina, owned
and operated by Lyttelton-based
Pegasus Fishing Ltd, ran aground
near Shell Bay on the southeastern
side of the peninsula on Sunday
night.
It had about 10,000 litres of
diesel and 400 litres of hydraulic
oil onboard.
Images show the vessel on
rocks, spilling oil near an endangered
penguin colony.
Environment Canterbury said
it is using a drone to assess the
vessel’s stability, release of fuel
and oil, and any impacts on the
environment and wildlife.
“We are concerned for those
wildlife, they are high risk and
sensitive. We’re preparing for an
oiled wildlife response.
“If we had a favourable weather
window, we may be able to
remove fuel from the vessel if it
was safe to do so. So far we have
not had those conditions,” an
ECan spokesperson said.
CAESAR IS described as lovable,
playful and partial to a snuggle.
But it appears no one wants
him.
The almost 4-year-old tan and
white medium mixed breed has
been at the Christchurch SPCA
Centre for nine months, waiting
to be re-homed.
Centre
manager Natasha
Sutton said
Caesar is in
desperate need of
human love and
attention.
“I absolutely
Natasha
Sutton
love this dog,
he is loyal and
playful, and his
foster parents
said he is a sweetheart who loves
to snuggle,” she said.
Sutton said the rising cost of
living and his age were factors in
Caesar being at the centre for so
long.
“Older dogs often get overlooked.
Everyone wants a puppy,
but older dogs are just as great,”
she said.
“We hold onto animals for as
for life, but has yet to find his forever home. PHOTO: SPCA
long as it takes for them to get
adopted, though they may also
be shifted to a different centre.”
But she hopes a half-price
nationwide SPCA adoption
campaign for dogs, which ends
on Sunday, will lead to Caesar
finding a home.
The cost to adopt a dog aged
five months to 8 years is $125,
down from $250 during the 50
per cent campaign.
Puppies five months or
younger will cost $150, down
from $300, and older dogs aged
8 years onwards will be $62.50,
down from $125.
Sutton said while Caesar is
lovable he needs time to get to
know people and can be wary of
other dogs.
“But he picks things up quickly
and training is fun as he is very
toy-orientated,” she said.
Footgate and foot room for McCaws
• By Thomas Bywater
RICHIE AND Gemma McCaw
and their three daughters are in
France to support the All Blacks
as they seek to make the quarterfinals
of the Rugby World Cup.
However, a few things have
turned heads about the former
New Zealand sporting family’s
travel plans.
The Olympic hockey player
and mum of three documented
their journey flying from
Christchurch International
Airport on Singapore Airlines,
including an episode of poor
passenger etiquette, which more
sober reporting has dubbed
“Footgate”.
Midway through the flight,
an unidentified traveller draped
a bare foot on one of their
daughters’ armrests.
The former All Blacks skipper
was not impressed.
Gemma eventually put her
foot down, sharing the episode
on social media.
“A hostess stepped in and
asked her to kindly remove her
foot,” she eventually posted.
“All is well.”
The McCaws solicited several
creative solutions to dealing
with strangers’ invasive feet
(including “let your daughter
draw all over it”).
However, there was one
BIKETOBER
detail that did not escape their
Instagram followers’ notice: the
family were flying economy.
Well, economy plus.
“That’s some brave travelling!”
wrote one person on the
McCaws’ departure post. Others
clearly did not envy the route.
“Good luck, Gem. For the
flight alone!” wrote another.
However, the McCaws know
how to travel with style and
economy, apparently.
Despite being multimillionaires
through
sponsorships and South Island
property, they did not rush up to
the front of the plane.
Travelling as a group of six,
they got considerably more
foot room out of the premium
economy bulkhead seats.
Although they did have to share
these with a certain stranger’s
foot.
Premium economy, midway
between business and entry-level
economy, costs an additional
$650 per adult to Paris. Perched
comfortably over the wings,
it makes for some savvy seat
planning, especially when flying
as a large group.
A long layover with two nights
in a Singapore hotel also meant
the family could decompress
after the 10 hour flight, and try
to forget the mid-flight foot
encounter.
Thanking followers for their
support during “Footgate”,
Gemma explained in an update
they were taking a “couple of
Brothers’ defence bill ‘disgusting’ and
• From page 1
“The fact that whatever a
percentage of my money is going
towards them fighting (the legal
case) . . . is pretty disgusting.
“They’ve taken the rights of
women away and now they are
legally allowed to consume taxpayer
money too.”
Brown had initially believed
the Jaz brothers’ defence was
privately funded.
Although the victims were
paid for their time when giving
evidence during the trial and
offered some counselling from
a sexual assault charity, Brown
said for her the counselling did
not work out.
“I appreciate what they (victim
support) did for us when
testifying for the trial, like going
through booking travel and
organising to come down to the
court, they tried to make it as
easy as possible.
“But I do feel like more should
be done. I had questions about
whether if they do go to jail will
they have to pay the victims.”
Some of the survivors had to
move out of Christchurch Brown
said, or fund their own counselling.
“Where’s that financial aid?
Why shouldn’t the brothers
be paying for the counselling
services that they’ve put on these
girls.”
DISGUSTED: Survivor Sophie Brown believes more should have been done to help victims
of the Jaz brothers’ crimes.
PHOTO: NZ HERALD
Victim advocate Ruth Money
said while everyone was entitled
to a fair defence the bill was
“absolutely obscene”.
“If only the brave victim
survivors could access even 10
per cent of it to help them with
the therapy required after the
offenders’ assaults,” she said.
“Victims have to wait years
and years and self-fund most of
their help themselves – and yet
predators receive these extortionate
rates of support from the
state.”
The basis for the Jaz brothers’
appeals has not yet been outlined
and no court date has been set.
The brothers both received
legal aid for two separate teams
of lawyers to represent them in
court as they defended the raft of
charges against them.
Details of the legal aid payments
were requested under the
Official Information Act.
The brothers’ case was before
the court for five years, during
which time they appeared at
various pretrial hearings and
challenged several district court
rulings in higher jurisdictions,
including name suppression
decisions.
Legal aid is funded by the
Ministry of Justice and can be
granted to defendants who need
a lawyer but cannot afford one.
To qualify for legal aid in a
criminal case, a defendant has to
be charged with an offence that
could be punished with a prison
term of six months or more.
Legal aid is also available for
offenders appealing.
The Jaz brothers both applied
for and were granted legal aid,
qualifying under the guidelines
for the service.
Until they were arrested they
worked at the bar and restaurant
– solely owned by their father
Michael Jaz – Danny as a manager
and Roberto as a chef.
He left New Zealand owing
more than $235,000 to creditors
after his hospitality empire collapsed
due to his sons’ offending.
As of August 31 – six days after
Danny and Roberto Jaz were
sentenced – their lawyers had
been paid a total of $896,517.21
from the legal aid coffers.
Of that, $498,214.44 was paid
to lawyers acting for Danny Jaz
and the remaining $398,302.77
to Roberto Jaz’s legal team.
“These are the current figures
based on invoices received to
date,” said Tracey Baguley,
the Ministry of Justice’s group
manager for national service
delivery.
“Please note that the legal aid
files remain open and further
invoices may be received, so
these amounts are subject to
change.”
of costs for the rapists.
Some work was billed on a
at an hourly rate.
She explained that fixed fee
amounts were paid for specific
types of activity carried out by
“Hourly rates depend on the
• $9375 for a report from a psychiatrist
• $9953.75 on social media analysis
• $1526 on printing disclosure documents
• $800 for photocopying
such as travel or office costs.”
The information from the
ministry revealed how legal aid
was spent on each of the brothers’
cases.
Lawyers for Danny Jaz spent
upward of 2700 hours working
on his defence, including
gathering experts, witnesses,
dealing with new charges as they
and preparing for hearings,
trial and sentencing.
The legal team behind Roberto
Over the years, many highprofile
offenders have received
significant legal aid.
The Christchurch terrorist’s bill
reached more than $392,000.
Jesse Kempson, who murdered
British backpacker Grace Millane
in Auckland after meeting her on
a dating app, notched a total of
$406,173.95 by the time his trial
and appeals were finished.
The legal aid bill for David
Bain’s retrial was $3.3 million.
Bain was found guilty of murdering
his parents, two sisters
and brother at their Dunedin
home in June 1994.
He took the fight to clear his
name to the Privy Council, which
eventually quashed his convictions
and ordered a retrial.
A second jury acquitted him on
all charges.
The legal aid bill for Clayton
Weatherston was around
$400,000. In 2008 he stabbed
former girlfriend Sophie Elliott
to death in her Dunedin home,
as her mother frantically tried to
intervene.
Ewen Macdonald, who was
charged and acquitted of murdering
brother-in-law Scott Guy
at his Feilding farm, had a legal
aid bill that totalled $271,000.
And Mark Lundy, twice
convicted of murdering his wife
Christine and their daughter
Amber, had a legal aid bill of
more than $1.77m.
Legal aid is not the only bill
the taxpayer has had to foot for
Danny and Roberto Jaz.
The brothers cost the taxpayer
a further $20,000 after deciding
just days before a scheduled jury
trial – for which more than 2000
people had been summonsed for
possible juror selection – that
they wanted to have their case
heard by a judge alone.
The last-minute move resulted
in the Ministry of Justice losing
$21,650 in cancelled bookings.
Retirees seek apartments as pad sells
• By Nikki Preston
A SHORTAGE of large singlelevel
apartments in the city drove
downsizers to a rare riverside
apartment, which sold under the
hammer for an impressive $2.1
million.
Real estate agents say plenty
of retirees were looking for large
single-level apartments in or
around the central city, but not
many were for sale.
The third-floor
apartment in
the Riverside
Apartment block
on Carlton Mill
Rd, Merivale,
attracted plenty
of interest at its
open home and
saw a number of
people register
to bid at the auction,
Bayleys listing agent Adam
Heazlewood said.
He said most of the 50 groups
viewing the apartment were
downsizers who were at that
stage in life where they wanted
simplicity.
Many were from the wider
Canterbury area looking to be in
a central location and to travel
more.
Bidding started at $1.386m
and swiftly jumped up with just
two buyers fighting over it. The
auction eventually paused at
$1.99m before coming back on
the market and selling at $2.1m.
Heazlewood said a large
number of apartments
disappeared after the
earthquakes and it became
apparent from marketing the
Riverside Apartment there was a
real shortage.
“A lot of apartments nowadays
are pokey and this is a full-floor
apartment. You do find it, but so
infrequently.”
The advantage of the Riverside
Apartment home was its
exclusivity and privacy given it
was only one of five residences in
the building, he said.
“It’s that lifestyle I guess and
getting a good view in a central
location, not having to look after
the garden and the rest –
it’s great.”
Larger-scale
apartments start from
about $2m, he said, and
can go up to $4m-plus.
He sold one apartment
last year for $4m and
had more coming online
later this year, which he
expected would fetch
even more.
Vivacity salesperson Aaron
Pero said the main buyer group
for apartments was retirees who
with at least two bedrooms and a
“There’s lots of those
townhouses with stairs,
but as we get older we
obviously want to avoid
stairs and there’s not
many catering to that
market.”
Pero said price wasn’t as
much of a factor for those
buyers as getting what
they wanted.
A one-bedroom apartment
on Armagh St sold for $590,000
to a woman in her 70s after
three bidders competed for it at
auction earlier this month.
The sale price was $50,000
above what it had sold for in
October 2021 at the peak of the
market.
Pero was working with four
buyers, all in the 60-plus age
group, looking for two-bedroom
apartments in the $1m-plus price
range.
He had just listed a two-level
townhouse with a lift in it on
Cranmer Tce that was due to be
completed in the next few weeks
and had a starting price of $3.1m.
However, he said there were
hardly any higher-end singlelevel
apartments for sale.
Kaikoura and the peninsula to
the Southern Alps.
She said only two apartments
views like this one. Both sold in
the mid-$1ms.
surprisingly affordable price for
buyers seeking a fully ensuited
city.”
She said current owners were
downsizing for retirement and
had reluctantly decided to sell,
adding that it would also suit professionals
High end ‘Inspector Gadget’
home up for sale in enclave
• By Nikki Preston
A JAMES Bond-esque style
home built after a 10-year
insurance battle has hit the
market.
The owners of the Marshland
lifestyle property earned the
name Inspector Gadget because
of the number of high-end fittings
they installed in their new
build.
Their previous home was
destroyed in the earthquakes
and the couple finally got the goahead
to build their dream home
after a 10-year long fight with
their insurance company.
The five-bedroom, threebathroom
home at 711 Hills Rd
was built by Onyx Homes and
has a state-of-the-art geothermal
central heating system for underfloor
heating and a continuous
supply of hot water, solar panels,
an inbuilt ventilation system and
heated saltwater swimming pool.
The build was completed
in 2021 and they have only just
finished landscaping the
1900 sq m section before putting
it on the market to buy a farm.
Harcourts salesperson Joe
Laing said the built-in coffee
machine was a talking point with
people viewing the property,
which has an RV of $2.4 million.
The home has two wings – one
with four bedrooms including an
ensuite, a family bathroom and a
media room and the other wing
having a master bedroom and
study.
Laing said the Marshland
property would suit a professional
family looking for extra
space because it was “massive”.
“The fact it’s got an actual office
as well rather than an office being
a bedroom.”
The home was in, according
to Laing, a “weird pocket of
Christchurch that no one really
knows about” where there was
an enclave of high-end lifestyle
properties including one which
won House of the Year award. It
was also just a 10-minute drive to
the central city.
A FORMER Instagram model
who threatened to blow up a
plane in a drunken rampage
has been back in court for drink
driving – and was scolded by
Judge Kevin Phillips for not
having learned her lesson.
“Your theatrics get you
nowhere,” he told Hannah
Pierson as she bent over and
cried in the dock when he hinted
she may go to prison.
Pierson appeared in the
district court where she was
sentenced on a charge of careless
driving, failing to report damage
to the owner, and driving with
excess breath alcohol causing
injury.
The incident unfolded when
Pierson got behind the wheel
when she was more than three
times the legal limit and crashed
into a young family’s car with an
8-month-old baby onboard.
The court heard the mother
suffered nightmares and
flashbacks as well as physical
injuries such as bruising, muscle
sprains and whiplash as a result
of the crash three months ago.
She could no longer hold her
baby and feared she would be
unable to care for her child, who
had bruising on their neck. She
also struggled with driving to
visit her mother.
Pierson read a letter of remorse
to Judge Phillips, stating her
heart was “weighed down by
remorse and shame”.
“No one is coming to save me
from this disease, I have to save
myself,” she said in between sobs.
“I am mortified by my
behaviour and recognise the
tremendous pain and suffering I
have caused to others. No words
can express my sorrow.
“On that fateful day, our paths
crossed and it was because of my
reckless choices that put lives in
jeopardy.”
Pierson said she tried to reach
out for help but was “unheard
and misunderstood”.
“I am not seeking forgiveness,
I stand to offer my sincerest
apologies and deepest regrets.”
She said she was now a
recovering alcoholic and fighting
to stay sober so she could be a
better person.
In November 2020, Pierson
made headlines after she abused
airline staff and threatened to
blow up the plane she was on
during a flight from Melbourne
to Christchurch.
Before she got on the
flight from Melbourne to
Christchurch, Pierson had two
drinks and then consumed a
bottle of wine in the airport
toilets.
During the flight, she
demanded wine and became
abusive when she was told her
ticket did not cover it, and she
would have to order it from the
menu.
disorderly behaviour.
In her latest case, the district
court was told Pierson had been
drinking and driving in Otago
on June 2.
She veered off the road and
crashed into a car that was
pulled over with its hazard
lights on. The car had two
adults and a baby inside.
The mother was transported
to Ōamaru with chest injuries.
Pierson returned a breath
level of 803 micrograms of
alcohol per litre of breath, just
over three times the legal limit.
She faced further charges
relating to hitting another
parked car on Colombo St in
May, and damaging it when
she rolled forward in a loading
zone. She left the scene without
reporting the incident or
damage to the other vehicle.
‘I’m not giving her any
credit for remorse’
• From page 11
Pierson’s lawyer Kathryn Vesty asked
Judge Phillips to impose a sentence of
home detention, stating her client was
very remorseful.
“I’m not giving her any credit
for remorse . . . there needs to be
extraordinary remorse, where is it?” he
said.
Judge Phillips acknowledged Pierson
suffered from a “debilitating disease” and
was obviously distressed at the thought
of going to prison but that didn’t excuse
her actions.
“Sentencing is not all about you and
your disease. You’ve had opportunities in
the past that you walked away from,”
he said.
He said Pierson had clearly not learned
her lesson from previous convictions.
He sentenced Pierson to nine months’
home detention with special conditions
to complete alcohol intervention courses,
not to possess or consume alcohol or
non-prescribed drugs, and not to contact
the victims of her offending.
Judge Phillips also imposed standard
and special post-detention conditions for
six months and disqualified Pierson from
driving for one year and nine months.
When it was clear Pierson wasn’t going
to jail, she composed herself and stood
up straight.
Mother’s torment: Nurse too
• By Carolyne Meng-Yee
AS A PAEDIATRIC nurse,
Emma Payne was scared of
having children after seeing
heartbreaking cases of sick kids.
Then she got pregnant and her
worst fears were realised.
She loves children but was
scared to have her own. The
paediatric emergency nurse
works at Christchurch Hospital
and says caring for sick children
had put her off.
“Being a paediatric nurse, I
had a fear of having children, we
see the worse of the worse of sick
kids and it puts you off having
kids, but you hope and think, ‘It
won’t happen to me’,” Payne said.
In 2021, Payne, 34, and her
husband, Colin, 32, were hoping
for a baby sister for their son,
Wyatt, 3, a healthy boisterous
boy. Twenty-two weeks into her
pregnancy, they were forced
to make the most unthinkable
decision to terminate their
pregnancy.
At 12 weeks, the baby was
diagnosed with truncus
arteriosus, a rare heart defect
with only one blood vessel
connected to the heart, instead
of the main pulmonary artery
and the aorta.
Payne had had genetic testing
for any abnormalities and
multiple scans and everything
appeared normal. But at 22
weeks, doctors at Starship
children’s hospital strongly
recommended she terminate her
pregnancy.
“They said the baby might not
survive the birth, or she might
survive for two years, and she
wouldn’t live past 30. It meant
months and months in hospital
and multiple surgeries her whole
life.
“We had to make the tough
decision, ‘Did we want to put
her through that?’ We didn’t.
She was induced at 23 weeks and
died during birth.
“Nothing prepares you for the
worst, we desperately wanted her,
but we didn’t want to bring her
into a life of pain and suffering,
we couldn’t do that to her.”
Blakely Payne was born at
8pm on December 8 2021, at
Christchurch Hospital after nine
hours of intense labour. Covid
prevented Colin, an agricultural
contractor, from being there.
Blakely died during birth, but
Wyatt got to meet his little sister.
FAMILY: Emma and Colin Payne with children
Paige and Wyatt. They had to terminate a
pregnancy in 2021 when their baby was
diagnosed with a rare heart defect at 22 weeks.
Paige also has a heart defect.
Said Payne: “Leading up to the
birth and during the birth it was
a strange feeling, I dreaded.
“Usually, you are excited after
birth, you meet your baby and
take them home, but I knew I
couldn’t. I didn’t know how to
feel. I just wanted to close my
eyes and it to be over with.
“But when she finally came,
I didn’t want it to be over or
to stop holding her or let her
go. I just wanted to pause that
moment.”
Payne and Wyatt got to put
nappies on Blakely, dress her and
take family photos. That night
Emma slept with her in the bed
and held onto her.
“The hardest part was handing
her over in a man-made coffin at
the crematorium the next day. I
didn’t want to let her go, I knew I
would never see her again.”
Payne wears Blakely close to
her heart; her ashes were made
into a heart-shaped necklace.
“Wyatt touches my heart and
says, ‘Blakely’. I talk to him about
Blakely a lot.”
Desperate to give Wyatt
another sister, Payne fell
afraid to have more children
pregnant six months later with
her third child, Paige. “I was
excited and extremely anxious, I
never wanted to go through what
I did with Blakely ever again. I
had to put her death in the back
of my mind and try again.”
Doctors assured Payne the
baby was healthy but there was
a 2 per cent possibility it might
have a heart defect. Her 20-week
scan revealed her baby had
coarctation of the aorta, which is
a severe narrowing of the aorta.
“We had so many scans and
each time the doctors were
hopeful. I was devastated to
find out Paige had a severe heart
condition. It was so unfair, I
thought my worst nightmare is
happening again.”
Paige was born on February
7 at 10pm and had open heart
surgery when she was three days
old. Payne held her briefly but
couldn’t have any skin-on-skin
time or breastfeed her.
“They had to take her away
to save her. It brought back
memories of Blakely and having
to let her go.
“There was no blood supply
from her chest down, her aorta
was too narrow. Five days later
they had to open her up again
because there was a complication
and Paige got septicaemia. Her
vocal cords, which are connected
to the aorta, were also damaged
by the surgery.
“She had vocal cord paralysis.
We realised she didn’t cry and
when I breastfed her, she choked.
We were so worried she might
never talk properly again but
thankfully she has healed. It’s
hard being a nurse, I feel like
sometimes you know too much
and what can go wrong.”
The Payne family are grateful
to the Heart Kids charity for
providing them with financial
and emotional support.
“Heart Kids is an amazing
all the decisions we make and
have introduced us to other
heart families. Please donate and
support this amazing charity –
they are with you for life.”
Payne believes Paige is a gift
from Blakely, she never stops
thinking about her. Although
her surgery was successful, Paige
will need regular check-ups and
monitoring. Payne is adamant
she doesn’t want more babies.
“I know she is physically
healthy, but I worry about her
heart. Aside from the scar it’s
not something you can physically
see.
“I have a massive fear I will lose
a child again, I don’t want any
more.
“We always wanted another
little girl and this is a gift from
Blakely. Paige looks like my
mum. She is a beautiful, happy,
smiley baby who is nosey and
likes to know what is going on
around her. Wyatt loves holding
on to her tiny fingers, he says,
‘Paige, you are adorable, I love
you baby sister’.”
Could you have
NO ONE really knows how many
bicycles there are in Christchurch. The
only estimate in peer-reviewed literature
suggests there could be 272,510 bikes
lurking in garages and sheds across the
city. The team behind Biketober are on a
mission to get more of them dusted down,
tyres pumped and out for a spin.
“Spring is great time to start hopping on
your bike for local rides,” says Biketober
co-ordinator Michele Hollis.
“Riding a bike is cheap, easy and fun.
That’s what Biketober is about – more
people having more fun on bikes.”
Hollis describes Biketober as a
“community festival”, meaning events
are organised by a host of individuals and
clubs. The focus is give-it-a-go rather than
racing.
Biketober aims to amplify year-round
Super-matchers are a
very small percentage of
the population who are
innately gifted at comparing
or matching complex visual
patterns; something forensic
scientists train for many
years to do.
“We have found that
there are rare individuals
in the general population
who are extremely accurate
in pattern-matching –
also known as visual
comparison,” Growns said.
“One example is
fingerprint-matching where
people are asked to decide
if two fingerprints are from
the same person or different
people.
“Our research has shown
that some people are highly
accurate in this task across a
and
she is keen for as many people
as possible to take the test and
find out if they have super
skills.
Little is currently known
about what makes supermatchers
so skilled at patternmatching
and more research is
essential to help find out what
makes them so unique, said
Growns.
“We think there are people
out there that are naturally
gifted with this psychological
ability. We don’t really
understand why yet, but it
might have a specific genetic or
neurological component.”
She says people vary widely
‘match’ stimuli side-by-side –
particularly forensic evidence
like fingerprints, toolmarks
or shoeprints. Forensic
evidence can play a very
influential role in court, but it
has also resulted in wrongful
convictions around the world
where innocent people have
been convicted of crimes they
didn’t commit.
Growns said the results of
her recent studies challenge
the long-held belief that
forensic scientists’ abilities
are solely the result of years of
experience and training. She
believes it could be possible for
super-matchers to work within
the criminal justice system in
the future to reduce some of
the errors that might result in
wrongful convictions.
Growns is the lead author
of a recent Applied Cognitive
describing the results of two
studies where 124 participants
were tested on their matching
Growns said research
investigating individual
is only just
beginning to emerge.
“We believe there are
important factors to
investigate in developing
a more comprehensive
as a cognitive ability.
important implications for
forensic science – particularly
the importance of developing
be used to recruit new highperforming
forensic trainees.”
a variety of members’ quilts and two guest
exhibitions.
The exhibition will be held at Riccarton
High School from October 4-7. The textile
art includes contemporary, modern art,
pictorial and landscape, and traditional
and upcycled quilts.
Giselle Bockman joined the not-forprofit
Christchurch Quilters in 2017,
after spotting an advertisement for a
free-motion quilting class. She has been a
member since.
“CQ is not just any quilting group; it’s
a vibrant community of generous and
creative souls,” she said.
Bockman has always been a crafter with
a passion for painting, cross-stitch, candle
and soap making, knitting and other
creative projects.
However, sewing holds ‘a special place’
in her heart. Her quilting journey began
with a small Brother sewing machine.
“A gift from my grandparents,” she said.
“My admiration for quilters started
early. I recall one of my aunts crafting
beautiful quilts for her children, including
an intricate appliqué cat quilt.
“It was only years later, after moving to
Christchurch, when I decided to take a
quilting class that I fell head over heels for
the art of quilt-making,” said Bockman.
She has participated in a variety of
classes such as appliqué, dying and
printing fabrics, and patchwork blocks.
“I’ve also begun to enter my work in
competitions, most recently winning a
EXHIBITION: Giselle Bockman
promises a day of fun for all.
SewEzi table (a portable sewing table)
from an online competition,” she said.
“Whether you’re an experienced
quilter or simply appreciate the beauty of
textile art, Christchurch’s biggest Quilt
Exhibition in 2023 promises a day of
inspiration, creativity, and fun for all,”
said Bockman.
“Join us in celebrating the rich tapestry
of talent within our quilting community.”
Raffle ticket prizes include a sewing
machine donated by Bernina, two quilts
and fabric, among other prizes.
• Tickets are $5 for adults,
and free for children. For more
HILLMORTON HIGH SCHOOL
Ann Brokenshire, Principal’s Message
September 2023
Our vision is “with our communities, we nurture wellrounded
and accomplished young people, prepared and
ready for life”. Providing multiple opportunities for our
young people, beyond the classroom, is important to us.
Students who take up the opportunities provided are well
on their way to becoming well rounded and accomplished.
Opportunities are varied but a few of note lately are:
• Outward Bound - two Year 12 students recently
attended
• Sau iā Festival featuring 20 schools around
Canterbury
• Trip to watch Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing
at the Theatre Royal
• Our major production for senior drama students here
at school
• The recent Year 11 Geography Quiz for Canterbury
Schools, where one of our Hillmorton teams came
first
• Senior Girls’ football - we won the final against
Christchurch Girls’ High School
• Our Under 15 boys’ basketball team won the club
final against Cashmere
• Seven sports teams went to tournament in Week 7
• Our Kapa Haka performed for an International Lions
Conference
We often hear negative news about young people, but,
here at Hillmorton, I find our students to be open - open
to learning from and with others and often with those who
come from different backgrounds to their own. This helps
them to become well rounded and accomplished. Many
of our students take our whakatauki (proverb) seriously,
Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe me te maunga teitei.
Strive for the utmost, if you bow your head let it be to a
lofty mountain. Sometimes these ‘mountains’ or barriers
we find within ourselves. Our students are learning to
preserve and to do their ‘personal best’.
As Principal I remain proud of our students and of the
wonderful staff and community volunteers who
guide them.
Winter Sports’
Tournaments
A record-breaking seven teams represented
Hillmorton at winter tournaments across the
South Island in late August / early September.
Summarising their tournaments:
The Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams both
finished top four in the South Island competing
against 17 or 18 teams. Huge achievements for
them.
The Senior Girls’ Hockey team had an amazing
tournament making it to the final, finishing that
game at a 3 all draw and heading to a shootout.
Sadly, the girls lost at the shootouts but were
proud to take the silver home.
This was the Senior Boys’ Hockey team’s first ever
tournament. They had great overall results and
experiences, finishing seventh in the tournament.
The Senior Boys’ Basketball attended the AA
Tournament for the first time, going against the
top basketball schools from the South Island. The
boys were in a pool of death having the top five
Christchurch teams in their pool, and finished
19th overall.
The Senior Boys’ Football went undefeated the
whole tournament finishing fifth out of 20 teams.
Congratulations to Aiden Kelly who received the
tournament Golden boot.
The Senior Girls’ Netball performed extremely
well, outranking their previous efforts in the
tournament, placing 12th in B grade.
We are very proud of the students and teams
competing in away tournaments – thank you for
the mana you demonstrated – and also thank
staff, volunteer coaches, parents and sponsors
who have supported and made the achievement
possible.
Dance
This year, 10 students attended
the recent Dance NZ Made
competition at the Aurora
Centre. Following a day of
workshops run by professional
dancers, the students entered
the evening dance competition
with dancers from across
Canterbury. Congratulations to
all the students involved, but in
particular to our placegetters:
Geography
Two Year 11 Hillmorton teams competed
well in the Maatangi Whenua Quiz hosted
by the University of Canterbury in August.
Students were testes on their geography
skills and knowledge with rounds including
New Zealand locations, mapping skills,
geographic terms and making features out
of playdough. Team ‘two’, Philip Brown,
Rhiana Taylor and Liam Coakley-Gutsell
gained the first perfect score and won the
competition.
• Solo Competition:
Samantha Young, first; Lily
Stewart second
• Duo Competition: Libby
McMahon and Amelia
Trick-Pendle, first
• Team Competition:
Libby McMahon, Amelia
Trick-Pendle, Chloe Milne,
Jacynta Monaghan,
Himari Yoshida and Yume
Fujimoto, second.
International Students
It has been fantastic to welcome international students in significant numbers back to
Hillmorton in 2023.
We’ve had 87 students from Cambodia, Chile, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand
and Viet Nam enrol at school this year. Reflecting the differing reasons for their study, and all
showing mana, some of the students came for a short two weeks, while others have enrolled
for multiple years. Some want a taste of New Zealand, some want to experience life here, and
some want to obtain NCEA and to pathway to tertiary study in either their home country or
New Zealand. All of them want to develop their tūrangawaewae here, to get to know New
Zealanders, and to improve their English.
With 2023 drawing to a close, we wish all our international students well and thank them for
their time with us. Being part of Hillmorton enhances our school, our whanaungatanga, and our
ako - it is so good to learn with and from you.
High St low carbon concrete
build a South Island first
THE USE of low carbon
concrete, known as Ecrete Plus,
in a CBD basement build is a
South Island first.
The early morning pour was
at 211 High St, a four-level block
comprising office, retail, and
hospitality units being developed
by Anthony Leighs’ investment
company, Portus.
The sustainable concrete
solution means the building’s
overall embodied carbon will be
lower and its carbon emissions
will be significantly reduced,
compared with those built from
traditional concrete and steel
construction.
“Concrete has a
very high embodied
carbon content,
primarily due to the
atmospheric release
of CO2 during the
manufacturing
process, but also
because of the energy
intensive process
Anthony
Leighs
and the subsequent international
transport to bring cement in
from overseas,” Leighs says.
“Using low carbon concrete
will reduce the embodied carbon
SUSTAINABLE: The basement of the High St building is lined with low carbon concrete.
of our building by 537 tonnes of
CO2 (more than half a million
kilograms) that would have
been otherwise emitted into the
atmosphere.”
In another bid to minimise
environmental impact, Portus is
using European mass timber for
the build. On completion, Leighs
expects the building’s total
embodied carbon to be around
80 per cent less than similar
concrete or steel structures.
“The word sustainability
means a lot of different things to
different people. For Portus, we
think there’s an absolute need to
change the way things are done.
We want to make sure that we
don’t use more carbon than we
need to. We take a long-term
view so that we are doing the
right thing for the future,” Leighs
says.
“For the buildings Portus is
developing, we’re working hard
to ensure they don’t have a lot of
embodied carbon and that they
are really energy efficient.”
For instance, for 211 High St,
the site of the historic Excelsior
Hotel, Leighs is targeting a
NABERS rating of at least
five, which is a market leading
performance.
In New Zealand, Leighs wants
Portus to take a leadership role
creating efficient and sustainable
buildings.
“Our expertise enables us to
look at new building materials
that are available internationally
and understand how we can
adapt them for New Zealand
conditions and our building
code.”
Developed by Allied Concrete,
Ecrete Plus significantly
reduces CO2 emissions by
replacing a portion of traditional
cement in the concrete with a
supplementary material.
Allied Concrete national
service manager Bob Officer
says the demand for low carbon
concrete is growing and is an
important part of a sustainable
construction future.
“The use of suitable substitute
materials in correctly designed
concrete mixes maintains or
even improves the strength and
durability of concrete, while
reducing its carbon footprint.
With correct specification it
can be used in any building
component where traditional
concrete has been used
previously.”
The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in
the nutrition and health of older women.
Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain
muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with
poor nutrition in older adults.
We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate
in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health
effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep.
We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink
twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet
(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11
hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in
supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs
involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs).
If you are a woman aged 60 to 80 years and can drink milk, we would
love to hear from you.
Speed limit plan,
Pop up
Museum
66 Gloucester
Street
Readers respond to the city
council’s safer speed plan to
introduce lower speed limits.
City councillor Aaron Keown,
whose mother was killed in
a car crash in 2008, didn’t
back the plan, saying lower
limits wouldn’t have saved
his mum
I agree with Aaron Keown that slower
speed limits will not stop bad driving by
anyone.
Lower speeds increases a false sense of
security among pedestrians, which can
increase their lack of awareness around
roads. This already occurs as some step
out, glued to their devices.
The only way speeds can be policed is
through the help of the ever increasing
network of cameras
throughout our city. But how
will these cameras identify
the unregistered bikes and
scooters that break these speed
limits?
Do we want our police to
focus on speed or crimes in
our city?
-D Downward
canterburymuseum.com
While safety is crucial, I
firmly believe this proposal
is fundamentally flawed
and overlooks critical
considerations.
Firstly, it’s crucial to
recognise the majority of
speed-related accidents are
caused by individuals who
already flout existing speed
limits. Lowering these limits
may not deter these reckless
drivers.
The chaotic proliferation
of varying speed limits on
different streets has become
a source of confusion and
frustration among drivers,
We’re
strengthening
our electricity
network
Orion is installing a new 66kV underground power
cable on Colombo Street near Milton Street, as
part of a major project we are undertaking in
Christchurch city to replace old cables.
Between 1 -10 October, the Colombo Street/Milton Street/
Huxley Street intersection will be closed at night. It will be
closed between 8.00pm and 6.00am. During the day, the
intersection will be open.
These are essential upgrades, to enhance the resilience and
security of the network. Please allow extra time for your journey
and follow all signage and instructions from our team on site.
Thank you for your patience.
council asset sales, name suppression
significantly compromising road
safety rather than enhancing
it. Reducing speed limits could
lead to a frustrating increase
in travel time, contributing to
greater pollution and emissions,
which directly contradicts our
environmental goals.
Our current laws explicitly
emphasise the need to adapt
driving speed to road conditions,
rendering additional speed limits
unnecessary and redundant.
Instead of inconveniencing
law-abiding citizens with lower
speed limits, we should prioritise
improving road infrastructure
and addressing driver behaviour
to effectively reduce accidents and
ensure safer roads.
-Michael Wilson
I think these people at the
council are bonkers. Lowering
speed limits to make it safer?
Great idea but it’s not going to
work. People are really impatient,
and it just seems to take too long
to get anywhere as it is.
Take Brougham St for instance,
what a pain it is.
-Adam Bright
These people who want to
speed or run from police, steal
cars etc., do you think they care
about what council have put in
place? They don’t. There needs to
be stronger penalties as Aaron
Keown said. At the moment
it’s a slap on the hand for the
offenders, while innocent people
are losing their lives.
-Elizabeth Crowe
City council owned asset
sales
What the mayor and
councillors may or not realise
is the council’s assets have been
paid for by the ratepayers for the
benefit of the ratepayers earning
a return to the city.
The main thing is selling the
assets is selling the income of
those assets, which will be lost
for ever.
The mayor (who made
promises) and councillors are
not there forever, and once any
assets are sold the rates will
still increase and there is no
additional income, so where
would the extra money come
from then? The ratepayers.
-Engel van Nieff
Preferably the mayor will not
sell any assets as outlined when
the mayor was elected. These
assets provide valuable income
for the city to keep rates down.
-Julie Summers
It was a pleasure to read Garry
Moore’s article about asset sales.
I was one of the many ratepayers
against sales and I hope the
present councillors will find
time to read this and maybe
change their minds if that is
what they were intending to do.
-Bernadette Turner
I would definitely tell the
mayor don’t sell the silverware.
Once its gone, it’s gone
forever. Whoever buys it makes
the money from it that we
would have made.
No need for another
completely new airport.
Upgrade existing airports like
Invercargill.
Stop wasting money and value
our assets.
-Jane Ross
Barrington Park sex
I am absolutely disgusted by
our pathetic justice system –
The scum that sexually
assaulted a young girl who
was walking home through
Barrington Park gets permanent
name suppression because
it might be tough for him in
prison. So what?
What about the victim of
this crime? She will have to
live with what this gutless loser
did to her, for life. His lawyer,
Elizabeth Bulger, argued it
wasn’t in the public interest to
name him – rubbish. We all
need to know who this animal
is. He will be out and back in
the community considerably
sooner than he should.
Why are his rights more
important than his victim’s?
Technical to play own game;
Canty Uni’s chance to progress
• By Jaime Cunningham
CASHMERE TechnicaL will be
playing their own game when
they come up against Petone in
the second round of the National
League on Saturday.
Petone are new to the competition,
but it’s something Technical
coach Dan Schwarz says is not
important for the team.
“The focus is on playing our
game and not changing for our
opponent,” he said.
“Petone haven’t played in the
league before but it’s easy to
know the good players around
the country – and they have a
few.”
“But, like I said, we’re just
focused on ourselves.”
Technical go into the away
game on the back of a 2-1 loss to
Auckland United in the opening
round.
Schwarz said his team can take
plenty of confidence from the
game, despite being impacted by
a red card to Lachie McIsaac in
the 16th minute.
“It was the whole story for the
game, really,” he said.
“We played really well but
with 10 players on the field it was
never going to go our way.”
After handing Chatham Cup
champions Christchurch United
their first loss of the season with
a 3-1 win on September 3, Technical
have yet to win a game.
They came close to taking out
the English Cup two weeks later,
TEAM: English Cup winners Cashmere Technical will be playing their own game when they
meet National League newcomers Petone in the second round.
but the in-form United proved
too strong, winning 3-2.
Despite the back-to-back losses,
Schwarz said the team have
their sights set on improving on
last year’s seventh-place finish in
the National League.
“We set goals going into every
season,” he said.
“And we think a realistic goal
is to improve on last year’s finish.”
With a couple of Technical’s
players expected to be named
in the New Zealand under-17
World Cup side, Schwarz has
brought in new players to help in
the latter stages of the season.
“We’ve got some young guys
and then some who have been
involved with club for years and
years, like Cory Mitchell,” he
said.
“It’s just to help with our availability
issues.”
Meanwhile, United will be
looking to continue their hotform
in their second-round clash
against Wellington Phoenix
Reserves.
They recorded a 1-0 win over a
tough Eastern Suburbs side last
week, with striker Eddie Wilkinson
scoring a masterclass oneman
goal in the 53rd minute.
Saturday will be the United’s
first match at the United Sports
Centre since their 3-1 loss to
Technical at the start of the
month.
The National League will be an
opportunity for United to cap off
All games will be
broadcast live on FIFA +
their stellar season, which saw
them claim the Chatham Cup,
the English Cup and the Southern
League title.
Although United topped the
Southern League last year, the
team had a poor run in the National
League, winning just one
game out of nine.
In the Southern League qualifiers,
University of Canterbury’s
chance to progress will come
down to a clash against ABL
Roslyn Wakari at English Park
on Saturday.
The first match between the
sides finished in a 2-2 draw
last week, meaning Saturday’s
winner will be promoted to next
year’s League in place of FC
Light Bears go from strength to strength
• By Jaime Cunningham
OFF THE back of a victorious
under-85kg season, four players
from the High School Old Boys
Light Bears have been selected
in the New Zealand Barbarians
side.
Jarred Percival, Taine Cordell-
Hull, George Coull and Freddie
Gibson were rewarded for their
consistent form throughout the
National Club Cup, which HSOB
won on September 16.
They beat the Takapuna
Bombers convincingly 45-17 to
claim the club’s first ever under-
85kg title. Former Christ’s College
player Coull was a standout
at fullback, scoring two tries
and making consistent breaks
through the Takapuna defence.
Youngster Cordell-Hull was
dominant at halfback throughout
the campaign, and opened
the scoring in the final. Former
Mid Canterbury representative
Percival was a consistent captain
The four HSOB players also
side this year. Percival, Coull
and Gibson started in the Metro
premier final, which the team
lost 31-26 to Marist Albion in
July.
Despite Waihora being
knocked out by HSOB in the
second round of the tournament,
experienced loose forward
Tyler Koning also made the
Barbarians side.
The 31-strong squad selected
from both local under-85kg
competitions and the National
Club Cup is unlikely to play any
games.
CANTERBURY Rugby have
announced the finalists of this
year’s community awards,
ahead of their awards night next
month.
The finalists of each award
have been nominated through
supporters, players and coaches.
Ellesmere clubs dominate club
of the year, with both Springston
and Prebbleton nominated
alongside one of last year’s
finalists, High School Old Boys.
Christchurch Girls’ High
have been rewarded for their
impressive season, with former
Black Fern Angie Sisifa a finalist
in the coaching category. CGHS
have also been nominated for
school of the year once again.
Meanwhile, former Crusader
Robbie Fruean has been
recognised for his efforts in
coaching Horomaka Combined’s
first-ever senior side in the Miles
Toyota Championship this year.
testament to the hard work of the
teams involved.
“It speaks to the strong sense of
community and pride that exists
at UC. It is to show that they are
not only talented athletes, but
also good people,” he said.
Gin said the “increased
investments” to see each other
succeed is a major reason
why Canterbury has been so
successful this year.
“When student-athletes,
coaches, and UC staff are all
on the same page and working
towards a common goal, it
creates a positive and supportive
environment where everyone can
thrive.
“It is the peak of multiple
years of hard work from the UC
rec and sport staff, volunteer
coaches, managers, and studentathletes,”
he added.
Heading into the Wellington
netball tournament, Canterbury
were six points clear of shield
holders Auckland following
seven sports. Auckland had held
the shield since 2016.
Canterbury breezed through
the pool stages of competition,
conceding just 88 goals across
three games and ensuring a
placing high enough to claim the
tertiary championship.
They comprehensively
beat Auckland University of
Technology 44-24 to progress to
the final.
Boasting the likes of Tactix
players Vika Koloto and Parris
Petera, Canterbury were able
to bounce back from a 22-21
halftime deficit in their final.
The fourth quarter belonged
to the maroons, who scored the
first five goals before flying to a
nine-goal lead at one stage.
Koloto and Julia Wynands
were selected in the tournament
Extending outdoor living
Rain and wind-proofing an outdoor space adds value to a property. With a roof
or clear vinyl sides, your buyers can see an area where rain doesn’t stop play.
Thanks to blitz advertising, most
Kiwis have heard the name Archgola.
The company and others like it can
add canopies to decks, enclosing the
space for year-round use.
Undercover verandas, pergolas
and gazebos can be turned into living
space by adding side panels, which
effectively create a conservatory.
Restaurants often use these spaces,
so there’s no reason why home
owners can’t as well.
Roll-down clear vinyl blinds are
a popular choice, which, if you’re lucky,
can be bought ready made from hardware
stores such as Bunnings and Mitre 10. If
not, there are plenty of companies that
will custom manufacture to fit. Usually
these blinds zip into place and are stored
using a rope-and-pulley system.
Mounting your blinds is very simple.
Typically it involves screwing the
mountings into wood or installing a track
then fitting the blind.
Other options include roll-up shade
cloths or other gazebo or veranda sides,
such as canvas. These aren’t as windproof
as the vinyl blinds, meaning they’re not a
12-month solution.
If you don’t already have an outdoor
living space, building a pergola doesn’t
generally need planning permission..
Provided the pergola is less than 10 sq
m in size, it is usually okay to add a roof.
But a quick call to the council is a good
throughout
idea; never risk
Christchurch
building an unpermitted
structure.
Another option for quick and easy rain
M: and 021 windproof 300 567 outdoor E: mike@starmedia.kiwi
living is a pop-up
gazebo. These can be turned into dining
areas to give buyers a glimpse of what they
could do themselves.
It’s important to dress them so it doesn’t
look like you’ve just plonked a gazebo
on the lawn. Lights, plants, furniture
and even place settings can really give a
gazebo the Pinterest touch and bring it to
life as an outdoor entertaining hub for the
home.
The more you pay for pop-up gazebos,
the better UV protection of the fabric and
powder coating of the steel you get.
Heating the outdoor space also makes it
more usable. The cheap option is a patio
heater. Permanent gas, wood or pellet
fireplaces and fire pits are easier on the
eye and can make a design statement, allimportant
when selling a home.
For wind protection, it’s reasonably
simple to erect trellis and staple brush
Thursday, September 28, 2023
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
Brighton mall is underway this
week.
The demolition of the former
Westpac building is expected to
take three months and is part of
a major reconfiguration of the
mall.
Once works are complete, a pedestrian
link will be established.
But progress has been slow. The
city council has been planning
PURR-THDAY: Burwood Hospital’s celebrity cat Harry celebrated his 12th birthday
with patients and staff, and tuna.
Hospital Harry turns 12
• By Sasha Watson
HARRY IS a favourite among
staff, visitors and patients at
Burwood Hospital.
When he turned 12 recently,
he got what every cat dreams
of: Many cans of tuna – as well
as fan mail from all over the
country, birthday cards, cat
toys, and treats.
Harry has been a popular
and permanent fixture a the
hospital for about nine years.
“We spen the first year
with Harry, who was about
him back home. He decided
he’d like to live a the hospital
and never left,” said primary
carer, clinical manager of
occupational therapy Cherie
Porter.
The fluffy, long-haired moggy
once belonged to a family who
lived nearby, bu they officially
gifted Harry to the hospital
after he decided that living
there was more fun than going
home.
Said Porter: “Harry is very
tolerant, he often gets pestered
multiple times a day by patients
but he never hisses, or bites.”
Porter said Harry brings
a sense of homeliness and
reassurance to a traumatic and
daunting situation, and he puts
people at ease.
“Patients often try to find
him during the day to pet, he’s
become a source of motivation
as well,” said Porter.
Occupational therapy
mental health issues and
dubbed him “the coolest cat in
town”.
“He offers a sensory
experience to those who
have closed off parts of their
emotional wellness,” Keown
said.
Harry has also been featured
in the Canterbury District
Health Board’s online staff
newsletters.
and shops, is still being finalised.
City council manager of planning
delivery and transport
Jacob Bradbury said it was pleasing
to see demolition work begin
a the site.
“We know that New Brighton
locals are supportive of the
project and are keen to see work
begin in this area,” he said.
The former Westpac building
was purchased by the city council
as part of the Oram Ave
extension project, which
proposes to develop a new
movement corridor from Oram
Ave towards Keppel St.
TIP:
‘Companion planting’ is when two or more plants are grown near each other for the benefit of one or both of the plants.
Planting some flowers in or near your garden attracts pollinators, like bees, and can also act as natural pest control.
