Hospital Harry turns 12

HARRY IS a favourite among 

staff, visitors and patients at 

Burwood Hospital. 

When he turned 12 recently, 

he got what every cat dreams 

of: Many cans of tuna – as well 

as fan mail from all over the 

country, birthday cards, cat 

toys, and treats. 

Harry has been a popular 

and permanent fixture at the 

hospital for about nine years. 

“We spent the first year 

with Harry, who was about 

three at the time, trying to get 

him back home. He decided 

he’d like to live at the hospital 

and never left,” said primary 

carer, clinical manager of 

occupational therapy Cherie 

Porter. 

The fluffy, long-haired moggy 

once belonged to a family who 

lived nearby, but they officially 

gifted Harry to the hospital 

after he decided that living 

there was more fun than going 

home. 

Said Porter: “Harry is very 

good at finding the people 

who need him most. He is very 

tolerant, he often gets pestered 

multiple times a day by patients 

but he never hisses, or bites.” 

Porter said Harry brings 

a sense of homeliness and 

reassurance to a traumatic and 

daunting situation, and he puts 

people at ease. 

“Patients often try to find 

him during the day to pet, he’s 

become a source of motivation 

as well,” said Porter. 

Occupational therapy 

assistant Michael Keown said 

Harry has become a therapy 

cat to many recovering from 

mental health issues and 

dubbed him “the coolest cat in 

town”. 

“He offers a sensory 

experience to those who 

have closed off parts of their 

emotional wellness,” Keown 

said. 

Harry has also been featured 

in the Canterbury District 

Health Board’s online staff 

newsletters.

Bulldozers 

set to 

move in 

on mall 

PREPARATION work for 

the demolition of part of New 

Brighton mall is underway this 

week. 

The demolition of the former 

Westpac building is expected to 

take three months and is part of 

a major reconfiguration of the 

mall. 

Once works are complete, a pedestrian 

link will be established. 

But progress has been slow. The 

city council has been planning 

to extend Oram Ave through to 

Hawke St since at least 2012. 

A $2.5 million village green, 

surrounded by bars, restaurants 

and shops, is still being finalised. 

City council manager of planning 

delivery and transport 

Jacob Bradbury said it was pleasing 

to see demolition work begin 

at the site. 

“We know that New Brighton 

locals are supportive of the 

project and are keen to see work 

begin in this area,” he said. 

The former Westpac building 

was purchased by the city council 

as part of the Oram Ave 

extension project, which 

proposes to develop a new 

movement corridor from Oram 

Ave towards Keppel St.

Ravioli, cod, frangipane propels 

young chef into the limelight 

PAN FRIED Murray cod helped 

Joosje Bouman stand out in a 

prestigious chef competition in 

Sydney. 

The 22-year-old St Albans 

resident was awarded three 

bronze medals, one for each of 

her courses, at the Nestlé Golden 

Chef’s Hat Award competition. 

It was her first time competing 

at the grand finals. Bouman won 

the South Island regional heat of 

the competition earlier this year. 

She decided to enter the 

competition because of the opportunity 

it presented to further 

her skills and connect with other 

young chefs. 

Bouman, who works as a sous 

chef at Kaisar Brew Garden, 

impressed the judges with the 

execution and delivery of her 

three-course menu to earn the 

haul of bronze medals. 

She was up against 11 other 

young top chefs from across 

Australia and New Zealand who 

were all vying to be crowned 

Golden Chef of the Year. Along 

with the other competitors, she 

had to develop and perfect a 

three course menu in the lead up 

to the live cook off.

and spinach mix on a tomato

asparagus salad. Her main was 

pan-fried Murray cod, served 

with a beurre blanc, gremolata, 

pickled mushroom, and crispy 

potatoes. For dessert, she created 

a frangipane, caramelised pear, 

caramel sauce, macadamia, and 

oat crumb served with a tuille. 

Chef judge Darren Wright said 

being part of the Golden Chef’s 

Hat competition gives the next 

generation of chefs like Bouman 

the opportunity to put themselves 

to the test, improve their 

cooking skills and connect with 

like-minded chefs as well as the 

broader industry. 

“Joosje delivered some stand 

out dishes on the day while 

under immense pressure. Just to 

make it this far and then to win 

medals is a tremendous achievement 

that she should be hugely 

proud of,” he said. 

The overall winner of the event 

was Melbourne chef Jimmy Han.

facilitating climate action 

Last week, young 

climate activists 

staged a ‘fly in’ at the 

city council building, 

demanding the 

retraction of support 

for the proposed 

international airport at 

Tarras, Central Otago. 

Today we look at an 

initiative called the 

Climate Action Campus 

CLIMATE CHANGE has 

become a significant concern 

worldwide, especially for young 

people. 

In Christchurch, students are 

able to channel their concerns 

into action by running projects 

through a collaborative Climate 

Action Campus, based at the 

former Avonside Girls’ High 

School site and nearby red zone.

that students have a lot of 

what we call climate angst and 

concern about the future, and we 

know that action is urgent. 

“We created this campus 

so that they can begin to take 

action. Kids will come with their 

passions and interests, and we 

will help them develop projects 

around them, so this campus 

has that ethos but with a lens on 

climate action. 

“Everyone from students, 

teachers, community volunteers, 

and city and government 

agencies are engaged, so the 

campus benefits from getting 

together as a ‘collective brain’ on 

the enormous challenges climate 

change presents.” 

The campus challenges 

students to start making climate 

action part of their everyday 

life, whether on campus or 

not. Students are taking on 

projects such as planting in the 

red zone, growing their own 

food, harvesting and cooking 

it, checking the water in the 

nearby Ōtākaro/Avon River, and 

looking at energy sources. 

“The joy of working with 

young people is that their 

ideas are amazing, and we are 

only beginning to scratch the 

surface of what is possible,” said 

Stephenson. 

The campus is supported 

by Rātā Foundation funding, 

helping students source project 

resources like greenhouses, 

irrigation equipment, beekeeping 

equipment, plants, and solar 

energy, which was installed 

in July. The panels help power 

the school and the Te Aratai 

Technology Centre, which shares

futures.

of groups and individuals who

“The big idea is that we would

concept is a solar farm. We 

need something like 70 per cent 

more renewable energy in New 

Zealand over the next 20 years. 

That’s enormous, and schools are 

great places for it.” 

Rātā Foundation chief 

executive Leighton Evans said 

the programme’s strength is 

educating young people about 

climate change and its impact 

while empowering them to 

implement change. 

“Educating young people 

about the importance of 

sustainability, with hands-on, 

practical examples, gives them 

the confidence and agency to do 

their bit to combat the climate 

crisis,” said Evans. 

“Undoubtedly, the campus is 

a unique initiative with hopes 

it will inspire others. We are 

looking forward to seeing the 

project ideas it generates and the 

results.” 

In term four, a natives play 

forest project will start at the 

campus. A collaboration with 

Citycare and Sport Canterbury, 

the project aims to engage 

students in designing a natives 

play forest that will be accessible 

to everyone. Students will go to 

campus every week and work 

with experts on alternate weeks, 

to learn about propagation and 

be responsible for growing some 

of the plants from seed, planting 

saplings and being guardians.

ZR-V Hybrid ‘knocks it out of the park’ 

THE RUNAWAY success of 

Honda’s latest SUV the ZR-V, has 

seen the hybrid version playing 

‘hard to get’ with a 1-2 month 

wait, for those who are fussy 

about the colour they want. 

This is an important model 

for Honda who have waited 

a long time to get a modern, 

well-packaged and good looking 

model to help them make some 

genuine sales head-way in the 

compact hybrid urban SUV class. 

While Honda have offered 

hybrid technology across a raft of 

models for the Japanese domestic 

market, up until now they have 

been largely off limits in New 

Zealand, except as used imports. 

Honda’s ZR-V delivers a step 

change in hybrid electrification 

technology for the company. 

The beating heart of this is a 

new 2.0L e:HEV direct injection 

petrol engine. The hybrid power 

train is exclusive to the flagship 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

$55,000 ZR-V Sport. Changes 

to the government clean car fee 

scheme mean that from July 1 

many hybrid models, including 

the ZR-V, no longer qualify for 

a rebate, with more stringent 

emission thresholds in place. 

Unless a vehicle power train 

produces 100g/km or less, it 

comes up empty handed in the 

race for a clean car rebate, with 

ZRV’s 126g/km failing to make 

the cut. 

The hybrid system comprises 

two compact electric motors 

connected to a 1.5-litre turbo 

petrol engine, and a lithium-ion 

battery for a combined power 

output of 135kW and 315Nm of 

torque at just 2000rpm. The ZR-V 

1.5 turbo we test-drove a month 

back needs more than double 

that serving of revs to produce 

its maximum torque of 240Nm. 

The hybrid system conjures up 

a deft balance between power 

and torque to front-foot our 

undulating roads. Around town 

it knocks it out of the park with a 

great blend of performance and 

fuel economy. A much-improved 

Constant Variable Transmission 

(CVT) is shared with the Honda 

Civic and features Normal 

and Eco driving modes and a 

user-selectable sport mode. It’s 

a transmission that’s a good fit 

with the hybrid power train. In 

fact it’s so good, you would be 

hard pressed to tell this is a CVT. 

I was in awe of the vast cabin 

area for a vehicle with relatively 

compact external dimensions. 

By any measure, this would have 

to be one of the roomiest urban 

SUVs in its class. A generous 

rear cargo hatch means you 

can take all your baggage along 

for the ride as well. You don’t 

need an eye for detail to see 

quality was a priority in the 

cabin design. Much of this is 

down to Honda upping the use 

of quality materials throughout 

the passenger compartment, 

especially on touch points. 

ZR-V Sport is the first model 

fitted with Honda Connect 

emergency services technology. 

This alerts these 

services if it detects the 

vehicle’s airbags have 

gone off. A 7-inch color 

LCD driver’s display 

offers a range of useful 

driver information. 

Some of the things 

we are talking about 

here are the status of 

various Honda sensing 

safety and driver-assist systems, 

including brake lights, headlights 

and turn signals. In addition to 

large, easy-to-recognize icons 

and a simplified navigation 

structure with fewer embedded 

menus, the touchscreen has a 

proper volume knob and hard 

buttons for Home and Back 

functions. This discovery of a bit 

of ‘old school’ tech really made 

my day! 

Well-sorted and designed 

suspension and steering are the 

pillars of what is an agile and 

nicely balanced urban SUV. It 

works hard in the background 

to make it easier for the driver to 

take command on our roads, and 

often-tricky and fickle weather 

and driving conditions. The 

suspension responds decisively 

and assuredly in steadying the 

car when it’s under siege from 

sudden and unexpected changes 

in the road surface. When 

driving in town the ride may 

be a bit firm for an urban SUV 

especially over high frequency 

bumps. It’s nothing recalibrating 

a more softly-softly approach into

Families in Ukraine 

need your help! 

The Sechka family live in a rural area 

of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in 

an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo, 

40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to 

provide for their family. They face a massive 

challenge as three of their five children have 

severe disabilities. One of their daughters 

is unable to walk at all. The health of 

their children means they need medical 

examinations, check-ups, and treatment. 

Which costs money. 

Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but 

when the war began, he lost most of his 

wages then he had to quit. Since then, he 

has focused on farming and keeps cows, 

pigs, geese, and poultry to survive. 

Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they 

are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate 

a lot of land to grow forage for the animals, 

and vegetables and grain for the family. He 

was using an old tractor that he bought 15 

years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and 

required constant repair. Mykhailo says that 

after each working day he had to repair it 

and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then, 

the old tractor became a place where Mieko 

and his siblings play. 

Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts, 

the family’s situation became very difficult. 

The loss of income, health issues and the 

ongoing war has taken its toll. 

Mieko’s family need help with resources, 

such as tools and machinery, so they can 

grow food for themselves. 

Right now, the Ukrainian economy 

is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So, 

supporting families just like Mieko’s with a 

self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline. 

Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have 

resulted in physical and psychological 

issues. There is no doubt that the impact 

of war will be felt by his family and many 

others for years to come.
