PURR-THDAY: Burwood Hospital’s celebrity cat Harry celebrated his 12th
birthday with patients and staff, and tuna.
www.starnews.co.nz
Hospital Harry turns 12
• By Sasha Watson
HARRY IS a favourite among
staff, visitors and patients at
Burwood Hospital.
When he turned 12 recently,
he got what every cat dreams
of: Many cans of tuna – as well
as fan mail from all over the
country, birthday cards, cat
toys, and treats.
Harry has been a popular
and permanent fixture at the
hospital for about nine years.
“We spent the first year
with Harry, who was about
three at the time, trying to get
him back home. He decided
he’d like to live at the hospital
and never left,” said primary
carer, clinical manager of
occupational therapy Cherie
Porter.
The fluffy, long-haired moggy
once belonged to a family who
lived nearby, but they officially
gifted Harry to the hospital
after he decided that living
there was more fun than going
home.
Said Porter: “Harry is very
good at finding the people
who need him most. He is very
tolerant, he often gets pestered
multiple times a day by patients
but he never hisses, or bites.”
Porter said Harry brings
a sense of homeliness and
reassurance to a traumatic and
daunting situation, and he puts
people at ease.
“Patients often try to find
him during the day to pet, he’s
become a source of motivation
as well,” said Porter.
Occupational therapy
assistant Michael Keown said
Harry has become a therapy
cat to many recovering from
mental health issues and
dubbed him “the coolest cat in
town”.
“He offers a sensory
experience to those who
have closed off parts of their
emotional wellness,” Keown
said.
Harry has also been featured
in the Canterbury District
Health Board’s online staff
newsletters.
Governors
Bay jetty
jump to
make
history
• By Sasha Watson
WOULD YOU pay $1100 to jump
into freezing cold water?
Well, the Canterbury Open
Water Swimming Association has
– and it is all for a good cause.
The association made the
winning bid in an online auction
through Trade Me, set up by
Governors Bay Jetty Restoration
Trust, with all funds from the
winning bid going towards the
rebuild costs of the jetty.
After 12 long years, the grand
opening of the Governors Bay
jetty will take place on Saturday,
and the association will be the
first group to officially “jetty
jump” off the new jetty.
“We’re a large group of
swimmers with a bit of presence
in Governors Bay, and plan
on having about 10 swimmers
participate in the jump,” said
association member Katie Lucas.
“Because we swim all year
round, there are no problems
about how cold the water may
be on the morning of the grand
opening.”
The jumpers will meet at the
jetty at 6am on Saturday, with the
jump taking place just after high
tide at 6.15am.
“We thought the jetty was a
great cause to support, and would
love the chance to be a part of it,”
said Lucas. • Turn to page 3
Passion for water safety
pays off for lifeguard
JEN BAEN-PRICE started
lifeguarding in 2008, with her
first season at Waltham Pool.
Fifteen years later and after
stints in every pool and aquatics
position at the city council, the
Hoon Hay resident has been
awarded lifeguard of the year
at the 2023 national aquatics
awards.
Prior to this work, Baen-
Price completed her level four
certificate and level five outdoor
education diploma at what is
now known as the Ara Institute
of Canterbury.
Following this, she undertook
a Bachelor of Teaching and
Learning (primary) at Canterbury
University.
“I took away many skills
through each of these qualifications,
including managing a
team, dealing with customers
and training staff – which I
now use in my position as team
leader aquatics at Matitiki
Hornby Centre,” she said.
Since her lifeguarding career
began, Baen-Price has worked
her way through each city council
pool facility, including the
old QEII and Centennial pools,
and believes Christchurch residents
have an amazing network
of pools across the city.
She says while lifeguarding
might look tame or quiet, this is
how they like it to look.
“It means nothing is broken,
everyone is being safe, and all
the hard work of training, educating
and preventing rescues
has already been done.
“I’ve stayed as a lifeguard
through the years as I enjoy the
customers, and I’m passionate
about water safety and keeping
people in our communities active.
“It’s a huge motivator working
as part of a team that really
aligns with my goals. We all
want to see more people in, being
active and having fun. My
team are awesome people that
make coming to work fun.”
Duties behind the scenes for
the lifeguard team include water
quality, lifeguard training and
plantroom maintenance.
Baen-Price says it’s great to be
able to represent the city council
at a national level through the
national aquatics awards.
“Just being nominated is an
honour! Lifeguarding is a great
job, with a great work-life balance.”
Baen-Price passes on her congratulations
to other finalists,
including city council Graham
Condon Recreation and Sport
Centre’s Martin D’Orso – who
received one of the two merit
awards presented at the ceremony.
The city council also received
the aquatic innovation award in
collaboration with Youth and
Cultural Development and Sport
Canterbury, for the FRESH pool
parties.
This initiative aims to
engage youth and whānau
from a high deprivation region
of Christchurch in active
recreation.
JETTY JUMP: A popular spot
for summer dips before it
was closed 12 years ago, the
Governors Bay jetty will be
reopened on Saturday.
Jump
for joy
• From page 1
“Last night, with the bids going
up before we had placed our final
bid, was very nail-biting.”
The jump will be recognised
with a permanent plaque on the
jetty, with the group’s name,
followed by the words, “First
official jetty jump 30 September
2023”.
After the jump, there will be
a chance to watch the sunrise
Beat the Itch at Kōwhai Vet
Hurrah! Spring is here! Longer days,
warmer weather, what’s not to love?
Unfortunately, as some of us know all too
well, spring also brings the not-so-fun stuff
like itchy throats, runny noses, and puffy red
eyes. Just as hayfever plagues us humans, our
pets might be facing their own allergy battles.
Does your dog have a sudden obsession with
chewing their paws, licking their tummy, or
scratching their ears? Has your cat become
particularly attentive to their grooming?
These are all common signs of allergic skin
disease in pets.
So what’s going on? Everyday allergens
floating around in the air, residing in your
home, or even hiding in their food, start a
chain of events that cause your pet’s immune
system to go into overdrive, sending it into
battle against these (mostly) harmless
allergens. This overzealous response leads
to itching that can be downright miserable
Dust Mites
Some common allergens
Pollen
Fleas
Grass
and distracting. If you’ve ever had an itch you
couldn’t scratch, you know the struggle is
real. The sad truth is, there’s usually no quick
fix – just ask parents dealing with a child’s
eczema!
What causes these pesky pet allergies? Well,
it’s a bit of a puzzle with many pieces:
• Breed: Some breeds are more prone to
allergies than others, thanks to genetics.
• Environment: Where your pet lives, walks,
and what they’re exposed to indoors and
outdoors can play a role.
• Immune System: How well your pet’s
immune system handles allergens like
pollen, food, grasses, mites, and parasites
matters.
• Skin Microorganisms: Yes, your pet has tiny
roommates on their skin, and when they
get out of balance, trouble can brew.
To make matters more complicated, itchy
pets often end up with an imbalance in their
skin microorganisms (think bacteria and
yeast). We call this “dysbiosis”. These critters
that usually hang around in very low numbers
not causing any mischief, start to overgrow
taking over from the healthy skin flora. In
larger numbers they start to contribute to
more skin inflammation, which leads to more
scratching and a vicious cycle of itchiness
with a sad and uncomfortable furball in the
middle of it all.
But fear not! At Kōwhai Vet, we have a special
interest in pet dermatology, and we’ve got
your back (and your pet’s itch!).
These beautiful doggy skincare
products will add a touch of class to
your precious pooch’s skincare routine
and leave them smelling delectable.
• Itch & Inflammation Control: We have
• Nutrition Support: We look at diets and
• Skin Restoration: We have products to
Here’s the scoop: When treating allergic
Woolston tree
planting underway
Community garden
to open in Hillmorton
WOOLSTON’S Cutler Park
is the first of six parks across
Christchurch to have new trees
planted as part of the Ōtautahi
Christchurch Urban Forest Plan.
“Cutler Park is in an area of
the city where we know the tree
canopy cover is low and needs
to be increased, so we’re starting
here first,” city council head of
parks Andrew Rutledge said.
The planting is part of an initiative
to increase Christchurch’s
tree canopy.
“We wanted to make the most
of this planting season, which
finishes at the end of this month,
so the team has pulled out all
the stops to get some trees in the
ground now.
“We’re aiming for 40% canopy
cover across our parks. In some
parks this will be higher, in others
it will be lower – it all depends
on how the park is used and what
space is available for planting,”
said Rutledge.
The approved tree planting
plans have accounted for the
trees at their mature size, and
have been designed using a recession
plane model to manage the
impact of shading on neighbouring
properties and sports fields.
Said Rutledge: “All of the
plants we use, whether they are
native or deciduous, are carefully
selected for the area they’re being
planted in. We’re using a mix of
40 to 60 per cent native plants as
set out in the Urban Forest Plan,
with a strong preference for natives
along waterways.”
To help give the trees the best
start, the team are using ‘tree
coaches’ which are made from
recycled plastic and provide support
and protection.
“In selected tree pits we’re also
installing underground water
sensors to help us make sure the
trees are getting the right amount
of water they need to thrive.”
The Cutler Park planting is
just the start of a programme of
increasing tree canopy over the
next 50 years. Up to 60 parks
will be getting more trees each
planting season.
• By Sasha Watson
IN MAY a group of 10 keen
gardeners from Hillmorton got
together to design and set up a
community garden.
Now the concept phase is
officially underway, after their
proposal for the garden plot
at a recent meeting with the
Waihoro-Spreydon-Heathcote-
Cashmere Community Board
was accepted.
“I think the creation of
community is important, and
something a community garden
will bring. Often we live next
to our neighbours without ever
speaking to them or getting to
know them,” said core team
member, Nancy Godwin.
“Another reason this garden
is important is that it creates
a sustainable food source that
can help combat the rising
food prices and encourage the
community to feed themselves.”
The estimated budget for
phase one of the project is $2000,
which will go into making four
garden boxes, a backing screen,
compost, soil and seedlings.
Another estimated $2,000 will
go into later ideas, including
planting fruit trees and setting
up a community pantry.
“We have a fantastic group of
core team members who have
founded and pushed this project
- the team has created an email
address, Facebook and Whatsapp
groups and have sent flyers out
around the Hillmorton area.
We’ve had no negative feedback,
which was nice,” said Godwin.
“The next plan is to speak
to other community garden
teams who have been through
the startup of one and connect
with people within the chosen
space. We’ll also set up some
consultations and apply for
funding.”
The garden team will be
hosting a fundraising barbeque
in November, which will be
a ‘proof of
concept’ for
the community
garden.
“The great
thing about
being a part of
this initiative is
that you get an
immediate sense
of good living with healthy,
organic food sources,” said
Godwin.
Nancy
Godwin
“It is a very community-based
project with all walks of life,
which is exciting. We hope to
encourage more people to join
in and become part of a likeminded
community in an open,
welcoming and safe space.”
Tournament brings winter
sports to positive conclusion
Our winter sports season concluded
with the annual Winter Tournament.
We want to acknowledge all the
staff, coaches and managers who
supported our teams throughout the
week.
A special mention to our Sports
Department, which ensured the week
ran smoothly and that our students
were provided with a fantastic
Project wins award at science fair
Following on from the great entries
in our school Science Fair held in
August, we recently took part in
the Canterbury-Westland Science
Fair.
Our students came away with
great results all round, with special
mention for Clementine Bruce who
won a number of awards including
The Raven Memorial Award for the
best project in the fair, the first
time CHS has won the prize.
Clementine Bruce, right, Canterbury
Winner 2023, with her project.
experience.
Also thanks to all the students who
were part of the tournament. Before
we left we spoke about the importance
of excellent sportsmanship, integrity
and about doing the right thing at the
right time.
Our students have, as expected,
been great ambassadors for our
school and community.
Congratulations to the amazing cast of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Thank you to all who
came to watch over the four nights, and thank you to the Cashmere Drama Staff for another great
show!
For Wigram
GET WIGRAM
Authorised by T Summerfield,
2/142 Ferry Road, Christchurch

I’m Tracy Summerfield, the National Party candidate for the Wigram electorate. On October 14
I will be asking you to vote for me.
I grew up in a working class family in Hornby. Although we were not well-off, I was fortunate to have hard
working parents who instilled in me the importance of a good education and the value of a hard day’s work,
personal responsibility and the equal opportunity for every person to succeed. These values have served me
well in my life so far.
I’m not a career politician. I believe parliament needs more representatives with real life experience. I’m a
proud mother of four children, chartered accountant, qualified teacher, businesswoman, community volunteer,
and a strong advocate for Wigram.
I understand what prompts people to take risks, to start businesses or to hire another person. I know how
important those risk-takers are for a country to succeed, and I understand how the decisions politicians make
can either encourage or discourage people to have a go.
As I’m out campaigning, whether it’s been at one of the 8,000 doors I’ve knocked on, businesses I’ve visited,
or at community events, I hear concerns around the cost of living crisis, declining educational standards, a
struggling health system and increasing crime. Like many of you, I share these concerns.
I’m standing for the National Party because I believe that hard working kiwis should have the opportunity to get
ahead in life, like I have. National is the only party with a plan to fix the economy so we can lower the cost of
living, bring down interest rates, restore law and order, build roads, deliver better health and education, and let
you keep more of your hard earned money.
Are you better off today than when the Labour Government came into office six years ago? Vote for me if you
want change! It’s time to get Wigram back on track.
The successes I’ve achieved in my life so far are due to sheer grit, tenacity and determination. I work hard and I
know how to get things done.
I believe Wigram needs an MP who is accessible, engaged, interested and connected with our community. I
believe that someone is me.
This election, I’m asking for your support to elect me as your local MP.
Kind regards
Tracy Summerfield
