continues to triumph
BURNSIDE HIGH School has
proved to be top of the pops
again in jazz.
The school’s band won the
Essential New Zealand Jazz
Band competition on Saturday
for the second year running
– the top award at the Young
Jazz Band-it school competition
at the New Zealand School of
Music in Wellington.
Said Burnside High head of
music and big band director
Chris Petch: “This is another
fantastic achievement for the
talented musicians in our big
band, especially after their success
last year, and facing such
stiff competition from the best
bands in the country.
“Burnside’s big band has now
won every competitive event
they have entered in the last 13
years.”
The band received $6000 of
musical equipment from Musicworks
NZ, and a recording
and music video.
Student William Kao took
out the $1000 prize for best
piece composed, and was third
in the composition competition
receiving $250.
The Young Jazz Band-it
initiative is a joint venture
between Youthtown and the
Aotearoa Jazz Education
& Performance Charitable
Trading Trust.
More than 700 students
entered the competitions,
either as members of bands
or individuals, with over 200
competing in the finals.

day. It was both encouraging
and inspiring hearing these
young musicians perform,
making great music together in
a supportive environment.
“A big shout-out to all the
music teachers, band directors
and family members who
helped make it all possible.
“Huge kudos to Youthtown

Hornby
lifeguard
takes top
award
MATATIKI HORNBY Centre’s
Jen Baen-Price is the top pool
lifeguard of the year.
Baen-Price took out the
honour at the national aquatics
awards in Auckland earlier this
month.
She started lifeguarding in
2008, with her first season at
Waltham Pool, and has since
done stints in every pool and
aquatics position at the city
council. She is currently aquatics
team leader at Matatiki Hornby
Centre.
Prior to this work, Baen-
Price completed her level four
certificate and level five outdoor
education diploma at what is
now known as the Ara Institute
of Canterbury.
Following this, she undertook
a Bachelor of Teaching and
Learning (primary) at Canterbury
University.
“I took away many skills
through each of these
qualifications, including
managing a team, dealing with
customers and training staff,”
she said.
Since her lifeguarding career
began, Baen-Price has worked
her way through each city
council pool facility, including
the old QEII and Centennial
pools, and believes Christchurch
residents have an amazing
network of pools across the city.
She says while lifeguarding
might look tame or quiet, this is
how they like it to look.
“It means nothing is broken,
everyone is being safe, and
all the hard work of training,
educating and preventing
rescues has already been done.
“I’ve stayed as a lifeguard
through the years as I enjoy the
customers, and I’m passionate
about water safety and keeping
people in our communities
active.
“It’s a huge motivator working
as part of a team that really
aligns with my goals. We all
want to see more people in,
being active and having fun.
My team are awesome people
that make coming to work
fun.”
Duties behind the scenes for
the lifeguard team include water
quality, lifeguard training and
plantroom maintenance.
Baen-Price says it’s great to be
able to represent the city council
at a national level through the
national aquatics awards.
“Just being nominated is
an honour! Lifeguarding is a
great job, with a great work-life
balance.”
Baen-Price passes on her
congratulations to other finalists,
including city council Graham
Condon Recreation and Sport
Centre’s Martin D’Orso – who
received one of two merit awards
presented at the ceremony.
The city council also received
the aquatic innovation award in
collaboration with Youth and
Cultural Development and Sport
Canterbury, for the FRESH pool
parties.
This initiative aims to engage
people from a high deprivation
region of Christchurch in active
recreation.

Literacy Quiz 2023
On Wednesday 13th September, Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka
had two teams compete in the South West Christchurch
Literacy Quiz held at Somerfield School. Both teams had
worked hard over two terms reading 6 novels and 6 picture books
and memorising key information from each of the texts.
Our two teams came first equal, with South Hornby coming third.
I was incredibly proud of our teams, not only for the result but for
the way they collaborated and supported each other.

Selwyn Lions Speech Competition
Congratulations to Laisa Samah Year 8, and Max Dill-Russell
Year 7, for representing Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka on Monday
night at Halswell Primary School to take part in the Selwyn Lions
Speech Competition.
They took part in a speech competition with 15 other schools in
the area. The ākonga/students curated their speech using a TED
Talk module during Literacy time. The ākonga wrote a TED talk
that would either influence or inform others.
We are very excited to report, Max placed first in his category.
This is the first time that Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka has placed
in this competition! Well done Max.
Success and Triumph at Canterbury Chess Individuals:
Celebrating Oaklands School’s Achievements
At the recent Canterbury Chess Individuals, Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka excelled with Ryan
Lau placing 3rd in Year 7 and Didi Xue claiming victory in the Year 8 division.
Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka participated in the Canterbury Chess Individuals event at Te Hapua on
Tuesday, August 29th. We are thrilled to share that our students achieved great success, with Ryan Lau
securing the 3rd position in the Year 7 division.
A special congratulations goes to Didi Xue for winning the Year 8 division. This remarkable
accomplishment highlights Didi’s exceptional chess skills and strategic thinking.
Chess is a fascinating game that not only provides entertainment but also enhances critical thinking,
problem-solving, and concentration skills. It requires players to analyse various possibilities, make
calculated moves, and foresee potential outcomes. It is no wonder that chess has been an integral part
of educational institutions worldwide.
Participating in chess tournaments like the Canterbury Chess Individuals allows students to showcase
their strategic abilities, learn from other players, and gain valuable experience. The competitive nature
of these events fosters a sense of determination, resilience, and sportsmanship within students.
By honing their chess skills, students can improve their decision-making abilities, enhance their
memory retention, and develop patience. Chess also teaches important life lessons, such as the
value of foresight, the consequences of impulsive decisions, and the importance of planning and
adaptability.
At Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka, we believe in encouraging our students to explore diverse areas of
interest and providing them with opportunities to excel. Chess is just one of the many avenues through
which they can cultivate their intellect and abilities.

Te Wiki o te Reo
Throughout the 1960’s-1970’s,
Māori had been protesting for
the right to speak Te-Reo Māori
throughout Aotearoa New
Zealand.
In 1972 the Māori Language
Petition had started and had
gained over 30,000 signatures.
This petition was then presented
to the parliament and had been
accepted. That’s how Māori
Language Day started.
Three years later, Te wiki o te Reo
Māori debuted and has been a
big event ever since!
Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka has
embraced speaking te reo Māori
as part of our everyday practise.
We say karakia, sing waiata,
and speak with others on a daily
basis.

Hospital Harry turns 12

HARRY IS a favourite among
staff, visitors and patients at
Burwood Hospital.
When he turned 12 recently,
he got what every cat dreams
of: Many cans of tuna – as well
as fan mail from all over the
country, birthday cards, cat toys,
and treats.
Harry has been a popular and
permanent fixture at the hospital
for about nine years.
“We spent the first year with
Harry, who was about three at
the time, trying to get him back
home. He decided he’d like to
live at the hospital and never
left,” said primary carer, clinical
manager of occupational therapy
Cherie Porter.
The fluffy, long-haired moggy
once belonged to a family who
lived nearby, but they officially
gifted Harry to the hospital after
he decided that living there was
more fun than going home.
“Harry is very good at finding
the people who need him most.
He is very tolerant, he often gets
pestered multiple times a day by
patients but he never hisses, or
bites,” said Porter.
“He will sit next to those
feeling anxious before an
appointment – he’s just a lovelynatured
cat who is perfect for a
hospital environment.”
Porter said Harry brings
a sense of homeliness and
reassurance to a traumatic and
daunting situation, and he puts
people at ease.
“Patients often try to find
him during the day to pet, he’s
become a source of motivation as
well,” said Porter.
Occupational therapy assistant
Michael Keown said Harry has
become a therapy cat to many
recovering from mental health
issues and dubbed him “the
coolest cat in town”.
“He offers a sensory experience
to those who have closed
off parts of their emotional
wellness,” Keown said.
Occupational therapist Pip
Dow is another of Harry’s carers.
“A lot of people are surprised
to see a cat in a hospital,” she
said.
“But Harry is well-received, so
well received in fact, he has been
put on a special diet for many
years due to being very good

20 minute homemade tortillas
Easy soft flour tortillas
Makes 8 large
3 cups standard flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
4 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 cup warm water
Method
• Combine flour, salt and baking
powder in a medium-size bowl
and whisk the ingredients
together.
• Make a well in the centre of
the dry ingredients and add the
oil and water. Using a butter
knife, gently stir from the centre,
until the dry ingredients have
incorporated and the dough
comes together in a shaggy ball.
• Turn the dough out on to
a lightly floured surface and
knead for 1-2 minutes until
smooth.
• Divide into 8 equal portions,
turning each piece to coat in
flour. Form into balls and flatten
with the palm of your hand.
• Cover with a clean tea towel
and rest for a minimum of
15 minutes or up to 2 hours
(resting prevents shrinkage and
allows you to roll your dough
out thinly).
• Heat a 20cm non-stick frypan
over a medium heat.
• Roll each ball into a rough
circle, about 18-20cm in
diameter, lightly flouring to
prevent sticking.
• Place one circle into the hot
pan and cook until the top starts
to form bubbles or pockets of
air – about 45 seconds – and
the underside is forming brown
spots.
• Flip over and cook for another
15-20 seconds (brown spots
should appear) before removing
with tongs.
• Keep warm on a plate covered
with a clean towel and separated
by baking paper.
Keeps for up to a week in a
ziplock bag or an airtight
container in the fridge. Reheat
covered in the microwave for 10-
15 seconds.

Feta and Herb Dressing
100g feta, crumbled
½ clove garlic, finely chopped
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
1½ cups of fresh green herbs,
leaves only, roughly chopped
(mint and coriander go well with
this recipe)
½ cup natural Greek yoghurt
1 Tbsp water
Roast Veg Salad
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 Tbsp maple syrup
1 capsicum (red, yellow or
orange), sliced into 2-3cm strips
1 red onion, cut into 8 wedges
1 medium kumara or 1 small
crown pumpkin (approx 300g),
cut into 1-2cm wedges (keep
the skin on, or peel based on
personal preference)
6 baby carrots, scrubbed and
trimmed (or use a combination
of your favourite vegetables)
Flaky sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
400g tin chickpeas, drained
120g bag of rocket, spinach
leaves or watercress
Method
• Place all the ingredients for the
dressing in a nutribullet or small
food processor and whizz until
smooth.
• Adjust the seasoning with salt
and pepper to taste.
• Store in fridge until ready to
serve.
• Preheat oven to 180°C.
• In a large bowl whisk together
the olive oil, ground cumin,
cumin seeds and maple syrup.
Add the capsicum, red onion,
kumara or pumpkin and
baby carrots and toss so they are
well coated.
• Place in a single layer on two
lined baking trays, season with
the flaky sea salt and freshly
ground pepper.
• Roast for 25 minutes until
golden brown, then add the
drained chickpeas (tossing a
little with the roast vegetables
and pan juices) and roast for a
further 5 minutes until golden.
• Place a generous spoonful of
the dressing on a tortilla, spread
the spinach, watercress or
rocket on top followed by
the roast vegetables and
chickpeas and another dollop of
the dressing.

Recycled materials given new lease of life
For anyone seeking materials for
those DIY and renovation projects, a
stroll around the sheds at Musgroves in
Wigram will reveal a vast array of products
displayed in well organised sections. This
iconic Canterbury company has been
recycling and selling building materials for
the last 50 years, resulting in thousands
of successful projects being completed by
tradies and home handy-people alike.
Three such examples are currently
posted on their website’s Hall of Fame,
the first being the transformation of an
old garden shed carried out by customer
Trudy and her brother Geoff.
A basic structure with no windows and a
makeshift door, it was first dismantled into
wall and roof sections, which were then
transported by trailer and reassembled on
piles in a new location on the property.
Materials obtained from Musgroves
for the project included windows, and
corrugated iron for the roof repairs and
to cover the new verandah. Secondhand
hardwood cross arms from
decommissioned power poles provided the
framing for the verandah, and an old door
that had been stored in Trudy’s garage was
installed and painted.
A new deck and manuka stake trellis
completed the job, which has seen an old
shed being turned into a striking feature
of Trudy’s Lyttelton garden, and a relaxing
place from where she can enjoy the
harbour views.
The second project on the Wall of
Fame shows a rail made from recycled
rimu clear timber, which customer Bruce
reconditioned and installed as a partition
for his open-plan living space.
When the timber was listed, Musgroves
had suggested it could be re-purposed
as a stair banister, or even remade into
furniture, but they are pleased to see it
reused in its original function.
The third item on the Wall of Fame is a
duck hut, which an enterprising customer
created from a large wooden packing case.

ZR-V Hybrid ‘knocks it out of the park’
THE RUNAWAY success of
Honda’s latest SUV the ZR-V, has
seen the hybrid version playing
‘hard to get’ with a 1-2 month
wait, for those who are fussy
about the colour they want.
This is an important model
for Honda who have waited
a long time to get a modern,
well-packaged and good looking
model to help them make some
genuine sales head-way in the
compact hybrid urban SUV class.
While Honda have offered
hybrid technology across a raft of
models for the Japanese domestic
market, up until now they have
been largely off limits in New
Zealand, except as used imports.
Honda’s ZR-V delivers a step
change in hybrid electrification
technology for the company.
The beating heart of this is a
new 2.0L e:HEV direct injection
petrol engine. The hybrid power
train is exclusive to the flagship

to the government clean car fee
scheme mean that from July 1
many hybrid models, including
the ZR-V, no longer qualify for
a rebate, with more stringent
emission thresholds in place.
Unless a vehicle power train
produces 100g/km or less, it
comes up empty handed in the
race for a clean car rebate, with
ZRV’s 126g/km failing to make
the cut.
The hybrid system comprises
two compact electric motors
connected to a 1.5-litre turbo
petrol engine, and a lithium-ion
battery for a combined power
output of 135kW and 315Nm of
torque at just 2000rpm. The ZR-V
1.5 turbo we test-drove a month
back needs more than double
that serving of revs to produce
its maximum torque of 240Nm.
The hybrid system conjures up
a deft balance between power
and torque to front-foot our
undulating roads. Around town
it knocks it out of the park with a
great blend of performance and
fuel economy. A much-improved
Constant Variable Transmission
(CVT) is shared with the Honda
Civic and features Normal
and Eco driving modes and a
user-selectable sport mode. It’s
a transmission that’s a good fit
with the hybrid power train. In
fact it’s so good, you would be
hard pressed to tell this is a CVT.
I was in awe of the vast cabin
area for a vehicle with relatively
compact external dimensions.
By any measure, this would have
to be one of the roomiest urban
SUVs in its class. A generous
rear cargo hatch means you
can take all your baggage along
for the ride as well. You don’t
need an eye for detail to see
quality was a priority in the
cabin design. Much of this is
down to Honda upping the use
of quality materials throughout
the passenger compartment,
especially on touch points.
ZR-V Sport is the first model
fitted with Honda Connect
emergency services technology.
This alerts these
services if it detects the
vehicle’s airbags have
gone off. A 7-inch color
LCD driver’s display
offers a range of useful
driver information.
Some of the things
we are talking about
here are the status of
various Honda sensing
safety and driver-assist systems,
including brake lights, headlights
and turn signals. In addition to
large, easy-to-recognize icons
and a simplified navigation
structure with fewer embedded
menus, the touchscreen has a
proper volume knob and hard
buttons for Home and Back
functions. This discovery of a bit
of ‘old school’ tech really made
my day!
Well-sorted and designed
suspension and steering are the
pillars of what is an agile and
nicely balanced urban SUV. It
works hard in the background
to make it easier for the driver to
take command on our roads, and
often-tricky and fickle weather
and driving conditions. The
suspension responds decisively
and assuredly in steadying the
car when it’s under siege from
sudden and unexpected changes
in the road surface. When
driving in town the ride may
be a bit firm for an urban SUV
especially over high frequency
bumps. It’s nothing recalibrating
a more softly-softly approach into
the suspension settings wouldn’t
resolve.

provide for their family. They face a massive
challenge as three of their five children have
severe disabilities. One of their daughters
is unable to walk at all. The health of
their children means they need medical
examinations, check-ups, and treatment.
Which costs money.
Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but
when the war began, he lost most of his
wages then he had to quit. Since then, he
has focused on farming and keeps cows,
pigs, geese, and poultry to survive.
Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they
are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate
a lot of land to grow forage for the animals,
and vegetables and grain for the family. He
was using an old tractor that he bought 15
years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and
required constant repair. Mykhailo says that
after each working day he had to repair it
and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then,
the old tractor became a place where Mieko
and his siblings play.
Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts,
the family’s situation became very difficult.
The loss of income, health issues and the
ongoing war has taken its toll.
Mieko’s family need help with resources,
such as tools and machinery, so they can
grow food for themselves.
Right now, the Ukrainian economy
is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So,
supporting families just like Mieko’s with a
self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline.
Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have
resulted in physical and psychological
issues. There is no doubt that the impact
of war will be felt by his family and many
others for years to come.

I’m Tracy Summerfield, the National Party candidate for the Wigram electorate. On October 14
I will be asking you to vote for me.
I grew up in a working class family in Hornby. Although we were not well-off, I was fortunate to have hard
working parents who instilled in me the importance of a good education and the value of a hard day’s work,
personal responsibility and the equal opportunity for every person to succeed. These values have served me
well in my life so far.
I’m not a career politician. I believe parliament needs more representatives with real life experience. I’m a
proud mother of four children, chartered accountant, qualified teacher, businesswoman, community volunteer,
and a strong advocate for Wigram.
I understand what prompts people to take risks, to start businesses or to hire another person. I know how
important those risk-takers are for a country to succeed, and I understand how the decisions politicians make
can either encourage or discourage people to have a go.
As I’m out campaigning, whether it’s been at one of the 8,000 doors I’ve knocked on, businesses I’ve visited,
or at community events, I hear concerns around the cost of living crisis, declining educational standards, a
struggling health system and increasing crime. Like many of you, I share these concerns.
I’m standing for the National Party because I believe that hard working kiwis should have the opportunity to get
ahead in life, like I have. National is the only party with a plan to fix the economy so we can lower the cost of
living, bring down interest rates, restore law and order, build roads, deliver better health and education, and let
you keep more of your hard earned money.
Are you better off today than when the Labour Government came into office six years ago? Vote for me if you
want change! It’s time to get Wigram back on track.
The successes I’ve achieved in my life so far are due to sheer grit, tenacity and determination. I work hard and I
know how to get things done.
I believe Wigram needs an MP who is accessible, engaged, interested and connected with our community. I
