Simon Barnett’s beloved wife 

Jodi has died. 

She passed away 

peacefully at the couple’s 

home early on Monday 

– with the devastated 

broadcaster and family at 

her side – following a fiveand-a-half-year 

battle with 

brain cancer. 

“We are absolutely 

heartbroken that our 

beautiful wife and mother, 

Jodi, passed away in the 

early hours of Monday 

morning,” the Barnett 

family said in a statement 

yesterday. 

“We are completely broken 

but trust she is now walking 

and talking freely with our 

heavenly Dad. 

“Words cannot adequately 

convey how deeply loved she 

was by us, and all who knew 

her.” 

The 61-year-old wife, 

mother and grandmother 

– she and Barnett had 

been married 32 years and 

have four daughters and 

three grandchildren – had 

undergone four brain 

surgeries, chemotherapy 

and radiation treatment 

since April 2018, when she 

suffered a seizure out of the 

blue at the couple’s home. 

Her fourth and most 

recent surgery was in 

January.

A CROWD of up to 10,000 is 

expected to celebrate the biennial 

Akaroa French Festival over the 

weekend. 

“The festival has seen many postponements 

since 2019, but this year 

it will finally return with what looks 

like fantastic weather,” said festival 

spokesperson Luke Dawkins. 

“An extra day was added to the 

celebrations to allow for more options 

and prevent festival enjoyers from 

missing out on anything.” 

The festival will open with a powhiri 

at 5pm on Friday, followed by a 

night market. 

Saturday will see reenactments of 

the first French settlers arriving in 

1940, a parade and day market, and 

variety show Le Cabaret. 

Sunday offers the La Brocante vintage 

fair, a best-dressed fancy french 

pooch parade (right) and, Le Cirque 

Du Croissant, a show set to entertain 

children of all ages.

Jetty opening makes a splash 

DIVE RIGHT IN: The Canterbury Open Water Swimming Association made the winning $1100 bid to be 

the first jumpers off the new Governors Bay jetty.

Governors Bay Jetty was closed 

to the public. 

Now, the 149-year-old jetty 

symbolises the efforts of a 

community that has worked 

on restoring the 300m-long 

walkway since 2015. 

The jetty, which was damaged

earthquake, officially reopened 

at the weekend to an audience of

‘I just want you forever and ever’

relayed the news to his listeners 

yesterday morning. 

“Obviously for us, it’s a very 

sad day. All our love and all our 

thoughts and all our prayers go 

to Simon and his family.” 

In an interview with the NZ 

Herald published at the weekend, 

Barnett described Jodi as his 

“perfect soulmate” and “greatest 

cheerleader” who had defied 

odds all the way. 

But he also revealed doctors 

had given Jodi just weeks to live: 

“Things are grim now.” 

Barnett said the best moments 

of his life were when he was with 

Jodi and their four daughters, 

Samantha, Sophie, Bella and 

Lily, who are all now in their 20s. 

Jodi, he said, was the very 

embodiment of “kindness and 

selflessness”. 

Revealing how they met 

“accidentally” on the Mt Hutt 

skifield in 1988 – when the then 

What Now TV host spotted her 

having trouble on one of the lifts 

– Barnett said he had never been 

loved “like the way she loves 

me”. 

“Her whole mission in life was 

to be the best mum she could be 

and the best wife that she could 

be,” Barnett said. 

“And if you look at her life – by 

any measure of success – she 

completely exceeded that.” 

Barnett, the host of Newstalk 

ZB’s Afternoons show, said his 

faith had led him to believe Jodi 

would “get through this – and 

she did every time”. 

“But of course, more recently, 

I’ve realised that we are really in 

a battle.” 

He said his wife had not once 

cried about her predicament. 

“She’s not the toughest woman 

I know, I don’t qualify that. She’s 

the toughest person I know. 

“I’ve cried bucket loads. 

When I’m showering her and 

massaging her legs I just cry. 

“I’m holding her legs and 

her feet and just looking at this 

girl, just my beautiful wife, and 

saying, ‘I just want you forever 

and ever’.” 

Barnett added that he was at 

his wife’s side constantly. 

“I just don’t want my wife to 

ever feel a moment where I’m not 

there. So all through the night, I 

just touch her hand and say I’m 

here.” 

After Jodi developed a lifethreatening 

brain bleed soon 

after her first operation in 2018, 

one of the couple’s daughters, 

Sophie, turned to Barnett in 

hospital. 

“She said, ‘Dad, I just don’t 

want to live in a world without 

Mum’,” a tearful Barnett said. 

“And that’s so what I felt, I 

just didn’t want to live and don’t 

want to live in a world without 

Mum.”

“I’ve said to her multiple times 

in the past five years and even 

though she can’t respond, ‘I’m 

simply in awe of you’.” 

Barnett said his bond with Jodi 

had only strengthened during her 

illness. 

“As if it were possible, I love 

her more deeply now than I ever 

have at any time in our marriage. 

I mean, so many things have 

changed, but I just love her now 

more deeply, more intently than I 

ever have at any point in 32 years. 

“So many people have said 

you’ve just got a genuine love 

story. 

“Unfortunately, it’s just got such 

a tragic end and I never saw it. I 

just never saw this. 

“But as the Bible says, love 

never gives up, love never loses 

faith, love is always hopeful, 

and endures through every 

circumstance.”

consultation for the Te Pataka 

o Rakaihautū Banks Peninsula 

Destination Management Plan. 

The plan has entered a final 

focused review before it is 

completed in November.

better mechanisms to 

manage cruise ships, better 

infrastructure to deal with 

adverse weather events, and 

protecting the region’s Māori 

history and community 

character with slower, more 

engaged tourism. 

In May, initial feedback on the 

draft plan was shared and since 

then further submissions have 

been received. 

Considerations include 

continued mana whenua 

consultation, the community 

hui on cruise ships held in 

August, and peer reviewing of 

the plan by an industry expert. 

The plan is being developed 

with specific areas of 

community focus, such as 

encouraging longer stays 

for visitors, reducing the 

environmental and social 

impact of tourism, emphasising 

the unique culture and 

natural environment of the 

area, and giving attention to 

infrastructure and facilities.

established the locations 

and, where possible, matched 

previous viewpoints. 

The contemporary

alongside prints of the 

originals in the latest 

exhibition at Stoddart 

Cottage, Historic Harbour: 

Photographing Whakaraupō 

through the Lens of 

Time. 

“The exhibition seeks 

to inform viewers of our 

rich heritage to be found 

all around Whakaraupō 

Lyttelton Harbour,” said 

camera club spokesperson 

Glenda Cheesebrough. 

“Our aim was to highlight 

our heritage and persuade 

others to explore our home 

here.”

Museum and Canterbury 

Museum, as well as from 

historians, residents and the 

Diamond Harbour Historical 

Association.

Synchro Dolphins take silver 

THE PROVINCE’S future in 

synchronised swimming looks 

to be in good hands, following 

Canterbury Dolphins’ success at 

last week’s Artistic Swimming 

Nationals in Auckland. 

The Canterbury Dolphins, a 

team of five swimmers, took second 

place in the Dolphin Combo 

under 16s competition, against 

six other teams from across the 

country. 

The talented young synchro 

swimmers showcased their 

abilities during a three-minute 

routine set to a medley of Mission 

Impossible, James Bond, 

and Pink Panther tunes. 

All but two of the girls joined 

the team in recent months. 

Twelve-year-old Georgie Halliwell 

was introduced to the sport 

earlier this year by her school 

friend Emily Betteridge, 12. Emily 

has been a part of Canterbury 

Artistic Swimming for two 

years, alongside teammate Alex 

Macfarlane, 12. 

“It’s like underwater gymnastics,” 

said Emily about the sport. 

“And you’re doing it in perfect 

sync with the rest of the team – 

it’s challenging! We count, and 

we listen to the music.” 

Georgie shared her excitement 

about participating in the event. 

“Synchronised swimming is a 

combination of all my favourite 

things, with swimming, music, 

and creating routines all being 

important,” she said. 

“It’s really fun being part of a 

team, and we train hard.” 

The team’s dedication is evident 

in their rigorous training 

regimen, which consisted of five 

hours each week. 

Coach Jo Biddle expressed her 

pride in the girls’ dedication and 

focus. 

“I’m super proud of these girls 

and how they’ve truly committed 

themselves to achieve these 

remarkable results,” she said. 

“They’ve come a long way 

and have truly earned this 

recognition.”

TREASURES FROM THE PAST 

‘Whalers retreat’: Waitata Little 

AT THE exposed mouth of 

Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour 

lies a small bay carved into the 

steep cliffs below the southern 

headland of Te Piaka Adderley 

Head (Charles Adderley was 

an MP and prominent 

member of the Canterbury 

Association). 

Piaka refers to the edible root 

or bulb of raupō (bulrush) and 

therefore connects to the greater 

harbour’s name of Whakaraupō 

(Lyttelton Harbour). Known to 

Māori as Waitata, the sheltered 

bay was utilised by residents 

of Ngāi Tahu’s Puāri pā at 

Koukourārata Port Levy for 

gathering kaimoana. 

The bay’s first European name, 

Whalers Retreat, poetically 

evoked the earliest European 

activities in the region. 

Whaling had begun in 

Aotearoa New Zealand’s waters 

in the early 1790s with vessels 

crewed by tough men primarily 

from Britain, North America, 

Australia and France, many of 

whom were ex-convicts – hard 

men for certain. 

Their target for the lucrative 

blubber and baleen was the 

Southern right whale (Eubalaena 

glacialis australis), humpback, 

and sperm whales. All of these 

migrated along New Zealand’s 

long coastline to and from 

feeding grounds in the wild 

southern oceans to warmer 

breeding grounds. 

The right whale was so named 

as it was the ‘right’ whale to 

target, being slower and more 

passive than other species and 

because mothers with calves 

would not desert their young; 

they were slaughtered first to 

ensure the capture of the

frantic mother. 

Whaling ships Lucy-Ann and 

Joseph Weller were probably the 

first to visit the bay in 1835. In 

1836, Captain Hempleman’s brig 

Bee spent about eight months 

taking refuge in the relatively 

sheltered waters of the bay. 

The crew used the beach for 

the odorous and often dangerous 

process of scarving and flensing 

the carcasses (when not using 

a shore station, these activities 

would take place with the whale 

hung by its tail alongside the 

ship). 

The blubber was then rendered 

to its valuable oily essence in 

trypots. Bone was sometimes 

buried in order to rot away the 

remaining flesh and huge tentlike 

piles of whalebones were left 

bleaching in the sun. 

The headland was a prime 

vantage point to sight the telltale 

spouts of migrating cetaceans 

and to convey messages between 

shore, ship and whaleboat. At 

one time, as many as 14 whaling 

ships were working the waters of 

Pegasus Bay from the cove. 

In July 1836, Captain Rhodes 

of the Australian abandoned 

17 crew ashore for mutiny, a 

common solution to discipline 

problems aboard ship. There had 

been numerous troubles on board 

until the final insubordination – 

the whalers had refused to row 

their longboat with whale in tow 

to shore from a mere 40km out 

at sea! 

A number of French ships, 

including the Asia, also used 

the bay – both officers and crew 

interacted and traded with local 

Māori from Koukourārata Port 

Levy, who set up temporary 

camps on the beach. 

Lieutenant Joseph Fournier of 

the corvette Heroine drew the 

first charts of the waters, while 

Captain Jean Langlois of the 

Cachelot attempted to purchase 

land from tangata whenua. 

A number of mariners and 

very likely some Māori too were 

buried in a small cemetery, 

having fallen to the rigours of the 

perilous industry. 

Later, John Ames operated a 

shore whaling station through 

1844-5, despite the industry’s 

focus having moved to more 

profitable waters as right whale 

numbers became decimated.

According to the journal of 

Asia’s surgeon Dr Felix Maynard, 

trypots, boilers, furnaces and all 

manner of gear were thrown out 

into the depths of the bay’s waters 

when the Asia departed for good, 

leaving little evidence but whale 

bone of the gruesome use of the 

cove. 

By the 1840s, Whalers Retreat 

was widely referred to by the 

English name that it is known today: 

Little Port Cooper – a ‘little 

sibling’ to the larger Port Cooper 

(which became Port Lyttelton in 

1857) in which it lies. 

The name was bestowed by 

Captain William Wiseman of the 

brig Elizabeth in honour of his 

employer Daniel Cooper. 

Cooper, originally from Lancashire, 

was a former convict 

transported to the Australian 

penal colony for life, who became 

a wealthy and successful sealer, 

trader and ship merchant in 

Sydney. His partner and fellow 

ex-convict, Solomon Levey, 

(transported for the theft of 90 

pounds of tea and a chest), also 

left his mark on history in the 

name of neighbouring Port Levy, 

albeit without the second ‘e’ in 

his surname. 

In the lead-up to its 

150th anniversary 

celebration over Labour 

weekend, the Lyttelton 

Volunteer Fire Brigade 

looks back at its past in a 

regular column 

THIS PEACEFUL photo of 

the Lyttelton Fire Station and 

both fire appliances was taken 

in January 2011. A month later, 

everything changed. 

The 2010/2011 earthquake 

period was undoubtedly the 

most intense in the brigade’s 

stellar history, 150 years of 

which will be celebrated in two 

weeks’ time. 

The two fire trucks are still in 

use 12 years later, but nothing 

else is the same. 

For weeks after February 22, 

2011, the fire station became the 

hub of the community. 

The fire communications 

centre couldn’t understand out 

why so few calls for assistance 

were coming from Lyttelton. 

Local residents just turned up 

at the station, where a friendly 

face and a large not-very-hightech 

whiteboard were ready 

to organise any help that was 

required. 

Six years later, almost to the 

day in 2017, the brigade moved 

into their now very-high-tech 

new fire station.

2011. Both are still in use today. 

That’s where, on Friday, 

October 20, a meet and greet 

social evening will kick-start the 

150th celebrations, followed on 

Saturday by a fascinating display 

of old and new fire appliances, 

and the formal dinner in a 

grand marquee in the station car 

park. 

While the earthquakes 

provided the Lyttelton Volunteer 

Fire Brigade with some of its 

proudest moments, nothing 

beats 150 years of continuous 

service.

for safe speeds across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, as 

well as our first three years of implementation.

YUMMI 

study. 

The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in 

the nutrition and health of older women. 

Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain 

muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with 

poor nutrition in older adults. 

We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate 

in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health 

effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep. 

We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink 

twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet 

(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11 

hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in 

supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs 

involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs). 

If you are a woman aged 60 to 80 years and can drink milk, we would 

love to hear from you.
