a life-defining decision to make.

scholarships to the Royal Ballet 

School in London, John Cranko 

Ballet in Germany, Princess 

Grace Dance Academy in 

Monaco and the Australian 

Ballet School in Melbourne. 

Tamison has the opportunity 

to follow in the footsteps of 

Italian Alessandra Ferri, who 

attended the Royal Ballet 

School in the early 1980’s; or 

Queen Elizabeth II’s appointed 

prima ballerina assoluta of the 

school, Dame Margot Fonteyn; 

or even the famous Rudolf 

Nureyev. 

“Tamison has been competing 

all her life and dancing since 

she was four. Her dream is to 

become a professional dancer,” 

said her mother, Toni Soppet.

CANCER PATIENTS and their 

visitors can now watch TV in 

their rooms thanks to a Rotary 

fundraising effort. 

The Bishopdale-Burnside 

Rotary Club has made a $20,000 

donation to the Cancer Society 

Canterbury from money raised 

from its successful Bookarama. 

The money will pay for TV sets 

the society has installed in each of 

its patient rooms. 

Said the society’s chief executive 

Nicola Coom: “We are very grateful 

to the Bishopdale-Burnside 

Rotary for their donation of 

$20,000. This donation has meant 

we have been able to purchase televisions 

for each of the 50 patient 

rooms. 

“Patients come to us from all 

over the South Island. They’re in 

an unfamiliar city undergoing 

cancer treatment, which can 

mean they spend a fair amount 

of their time in bed or exhausted, 

unwell and sometimes confined to 

their room. 

“Having a television for entertainment 

purposes and staying 

connected with the outside 

world contributes greatly to their 

recuperation and relaxation,” said 

Coom. 

“It also helps us create that 

‘home away from home’ that we 

strive to achieve. 

“A heartfelt thanks from 

all of us at Cancer Society to 

Bishopdale-Burnside Rotary. We 

cannot do what we do without the 

generosity of people and groups 

like you.”

UBER-COOL: The 1970s home in Ilam has undergone an award-winning makeover 

and set is to be auctioned on October 19.

‘Cone home’ back on the market

A 1970s cone-shaped home given 

an award-winning makeover to 

bring it into the 21st century has 

hit the market for the second 

time in a year. 

The home at 35A Westburn 

Tce, Ilam, sold under the hammer 

for $1.31 million in September 

2022 and is already back on 

the market due to the owners’ 

circumstances changing. 

Harcourts Gold salesperson 

Cameron Bailey, who is marketing 

the home for a second time, 

said it was an impressively cool 

property that would suit young 

executives or people 

wanting to downsize because 

it was single storey. 

Bailey said the “ubercool 

mid-century architecture” 

was a real selling 

point. The architecture 

includes a brick cone 

protruding through the 

walls. 

“It’s one of those houses 

that doesn’t date, it’s always cool 

whether it’s brand-new or 50

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom 

property underwent 

a sympathetic 14-month 

renovation by the previous 

owner, Angelique 

Armstrong, who is a wellknown

her hard work scored the 

home an award for the best 

renovation project in the 2021 

TIDA NZ renovation of the year 

awards, as well as near-$1m price 

bump when she sold. 

TIDA judges were impressed 

with how the house had been revamped, 

while still maintaining 

a comfortable, lived-in ambiance 

and paying homage to the best 

aspects of the original design. 

Features include floating 

timber ceilings, extensive glazing 

and solid oak flooring, a new 

kitchen with granite counters 

and tiled bathrooms. 

“It’s all been modernised 

inside so it’s a mid-century 

modern house with new creature 

comforts,” Bailey said. 

Native plants fill the garden 

and there’s a stream that helps 

create a private oasis on the 855 

sq m section. 

“It’s just a lovely house.” 

The property is to be auctioned 

on October 19 with Bailey 

adding that the market would 

determine the price. 

“They want it sold so they will 

meet the market on the day.” 

It has a 2022 RV of $1.31m.

The city’s history 

with a camera 

THE SEARCH is on once again 

for unique photos that tell the 

stories of Christchurch. 

The annual Christchurch City 

Libraries’ photo hunt started this 

week and will run alongside the 

city’s heritage festival. 

The photo hunt aims to gather 

and preserve photographs from 

across the community, along 

with the unique stories of their 

creators. The theme this year is 

‘Our Stories of Living and Learning’. 

Susan Hanham won last year’s 

photo hunt with a portrait of 

herself and her sister Catherine 

during the 1974 Commonwealth 

Games at Queen Elizabeth II 

Park. 

Hanham recalled the Commonwealth 

Games being a “really 

big deal” for the city. Her mother 

had sewn special clothes in the 

games’ colours. 

“Mum handled the finances 

in our family, and she always set 

money aside in a tin, called the 

fun tin. So, in this instance we 

got to go to the opening of the 

Commonwealth Games in our 

‘special’ games outfits.” 

Acting head of libraries and information 

Erica Rankin said the 

hunt aims to highlight the key 

moments in the city’s history. 

“We find the photo hunt 

incredibly valuable in preserving 

these stories for our future generations 

to learn from and enjoy,” 

she said. 

“We have many stories, from 

Ngāi Tahu and other iwi, European 

settlers, Pasifika and people 

of many ethnic and cultural 

backgrounds who have made this 

place home.” 

Submitted photographs will be 

showcased on the Discovery Wall 

at Tūranga, and as part of the 

permanent heritage collections at 

Christchurch City Libraries. 

Medbury School teacher 

‘truly humbled’ by award 


CLARE ERASMUS didn’t know 

she was nominated and selected 

as a recipient of an Independent 

Schools of New Zealand (ISNZ) 

honours award for service to 

teaching and learning. 

So she was “truly humbled” 

when she was emailed about 

being selected. 

Said the Medbury School year 

3 teacher: “I saw the email when 

I was away at a conference, so 

being nominated and selected for 

the award was a total surprise.” 

She was one of four 

Christchurch teachers who 

gained honours awards – Ginnie 

Thorner, St Andrew’s College, 

for service to performing arts, 

Mandy Anderson (Rangi Ruru 

Girls’ School) for sport and Rob 

Donaldson (Christ’s College) 

for school culture through 

leadership. 

The honours recognise 

teachers and staff who develop a 

learning environment that will 

motivate and prepare students 

to be responsible, conscientious 

decision-makers and engaged 

change-makers. 

“As an educator, we have a 

responsibility to create strong 

connections with our pupils in 

an environment where (they) can 

build their confidence, resilience, 

and self-esteem,” said Erasmus.

The head of social sciences 

at Medbury began her 30-year 

teaching career lecturing at the 

University of Kwa Zulu Natal in 

South Africa before taking on a 

role at an independent school in 

Taiwan. 

She then moved to Australia, 

to study and teach before 

moving to New Zealand about 

20 years ago. 

Prior to joining Medbury, she 

taught at Cathedral Grammar 

for about 14 years. 

“My greatest experiences have 

come from teaching all over the 

world across different cultures,” 

said Erasmus. 

“I feel very rich in my 

connections to other people and 


I enjoy sharing my passion.” 

Erasmus has written four 

novels – including a children’s 

‘Kia Kaha’ series inspired by 

the aftermath of the February 

22, 2011 earthquake – and 

publications as an educator 

and advocates for literacy 

development. 

Erasmus is also involved 

in curriculum changes and 

planning activities, and is 

currently working towards a 

doctorate degree in wellbeing. 

Said Erasmus: “My next goals 

are to power through the rest 

of my doctorate, and hopefully 

use the research to bring teacher 

and pupil together, and action 

positive changes.”

and attending masterclasses, 

Tamison was called back for 

further judging, where the junior 

grand prix title was officially 

awarded to her by consensus of a 

four-judge panel. 

The scholarship enables her 

to attend one of four top ballet 

schools in the world for a period 

of up to four weeks. 

“Winning is one thing and 

absolutely something to be proud 

of, but the scholarships and 

exposure is where the ‘excel’ part 

starts,” said Soppet. 

“Tamison is over the moon to 

have such an accomplishment 

under her belt. This is the 

first time she’s been overseas 

to compete – which is pretty 

incredible.” 

She said Tamison was judged 

for her ‘artistry, technicality, 

musicality, and performance’ in 

both classical and contemporary 

categories. 

“We moved to Convergence 

Dance Studios a couple of years 

ago and I cannot give Olivia 

Russell, her dance instructor, 

enough credit,” said Soppet. 

“Her incredible nurturing,

Washington is one of two 

Cantabrians with a chance to be 

Young Horticulturist of the Year. 

Washington, from Bishopdale, 

won the 2023 Young Landscaper 

of the Year award, which was announced 

on September 2. 

The award gives him right of 

entry to the national Young Horticulturist 

competition, held in 

Auckland on November 7 and 8. 

“The competition is an amazing 

opportunity 

to showcase 

what you know. 

It will be a real 

challenge, but 

a great experience 

with lots of

the 26-year-old.

the competition finals in Auckland 

is Halswell’s Lydia O’Dowd, 

the head propagator at Southern 

Woods Nursery in Rolleston. 

O’Dowd, 29, was recently 

judged Young Plant Producer of 

the Year. 

Washington will compete 

against O’Dowd and five others 

from horticulture sectors such as 

floristry, arboriculture and wine 

growing. 

Washington initially studied 

agriculture and commerce 

at Lincoln University, before 

spending time in the rural 

sector. 

After a few years he made the 

decision to return to the family 

business, working his way up to 

becoming operations manager of 

Goom Landscapes. 

“I really enjoy my position and 

where I am at in the business. 

Going forward, I would like to 

keep building on this, and my 

team, so that we can continue 

leading the way in landscaping 

while being as efficient as possible,” 

Washington said. 

“Going on to the next competition 

stage is very exciting 

and something I look forward 

to sharing with my team, and 

hopefully sharing my experience 

with next year’s competitors too. 

Winning the award shows the 

team that we can do this.” 

In order to claim the title of 

Young Landscaper of the Year 

Washington competed in a series 

of mini-challenges involving 

paving, plant identification and 

speech-making. 

Alongside the title, he received 

a cash prize of more than $2000 

plus vouchers, which he will put 

into his own home’s renovations.

Synchro Dolphins take silver 

THE PROVINCE’S future in 

synchronised swimming looks 

to be in good hands, following 

Canterbury Dolphins’ success at 

last week’s Artistic Swimming 

Nationals in Auckland. 

The Canterbury Dolphins, 

a team of five swimmers, took 

second place in the Dolphin 

Combo under 16s competition, 

against six other teams from 

across the country. 

The talented young synchro 

swimmers showcased their 

abilities during a three-minute 

routine set to a medley of 

Mission Impossible, James Bond, 

and Pink Panther tunes. 

All but two of the girls joined 

the team in recent months. 

12-year-old Georgie Halliwell 

was introduced to the sport 

earlier this year by her school 

friend Emily Betteridge, 12. 

Emily has been a part of 

Canterbury Artistic Swimming 

for two years, alongside 

teammate Alex Macfarlane, 12. 

“It’s like underwater 

gymnastics,” said Emily about 

the sport. 

“And you’re doing it in perfect

Davis, a doctor working in 

metabolic disease and lifestyle 

medicine, who says food is more 

than nutrients and fuel and it is 

possible to have health and wellness 

without compromising on 

the joy of food. 

A keto diet significantly 

reduces using glucose as fuel, 

turning off the making of new fat 

and leaving only dietary fat and 

stored fat for fuel. Insulin controls 

the balance as it carries the 

glucose around the body to use 

as energy, and controlling the 

insulin in your body has been 

proved to be helpful for those 

with diabetes. 

Turmeric Thai chicken 

curry 

Makes 4 portions 

Suitable for GF, sugar-free, DF, 

egg-free 

Ingredients 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

8 chicken thighs, skinless, boneless 

3 Tbsp red curry paste, lowsugar 

1 small onion, sliced 

1 Tbsp fresh ginger, finely grated 

1 clove garlic, crushed 

2 tsp ground coriander 

1½ tsp ground turmeric 

1 tsp salt 

½ tsp white pepper 

400ml coconut milk 

½ head broccoli or 2 bunches 

broccolini 

1 lime, zest and juice 

Method 

• Preheat a heavy-based pot 

over a high heat. Once hot, add 

2 tablespoons of oil and sear the 

chicken thighs on both sides until 

golden brown. Remove them 

from the pot and set aside. 

• In the same pot, add another 

tablespoon of oil and the 

sliced onion, and cook until 

translucent. Then add the curry 

paste, ginger, garlic, coriander, 

turmeric, salt and pepper. Cook 

for another 2–3 minutes until 

fragrant. 

• Add the coconut milk and 

return the chicken to the sauce. 

Turn it down to a low heat and 

simmer for 15–20 minutes until 

the chicken is cooked through. 

• Cut the broccoli into florets, 

or trim the broccolini, and add 

them to the sauce. Cover the 

pot and simmer for another 4–7 

minutes until the broccoli is 

tender. 

• Lastly, stir through the lime 

zest and juice, then taste and 

adjust the seasoning, if needed. 

Nutrition Note: Turmeric is well 

known for its anti-inflammatory 

and antioxidant properties. 

Peanut butter cup slice 

Makes 24 slices 

Suitable for GF, sugar-free, vegetarian, 

egg-free 

For the base 

150g butter, melted 

200g ground almonds 

90g allulose 

50g cocoa powder 

35g peanuts, chopped 

½ tsp ground cinnamon 

For the peanut butter layer 

500g smooth peanut butter (no 

added sugar) 

80g unflavoured or vanilla, lowcarb 

protein powder 

150g Allulose 

1 tsp Vanilla paste or essence 

For the chocolate 

200g sugar-free dark chocolate, 

chopped, or baking bits 

40g coconut oil 

35g peanuts, chopped 

Method 

• Preheat your oven to 170°C 

fan bake and line a 20cm × 30cm 

slice tray with baking paper. 

• In a bowl, mix the base ingredients 

together and press evenly 

into the bottom of the lined tray. 

• Bake for 8-10 minutes until 

the top looks dry, then press the 

base down with a flat object or 

the back of a spoon. Allow the 

base to cool completely at room 

temperature before continuing. 

• Heat the peanut butter in a 

double boiler or in a microwavesafe 

bowl on low, stirring every 

30 seconds, until it has thinned 

out and is easy to mix. 

• Stir in the protein powder. 

If you’re using a vanilla protein 

powder, it may have sweetness in 

it already, so start with half the 

sweetener, then taste the mix and 

add more as needed. 

• Stir through the vanilla and 

mix until combined, then set it 

aside. 

• Melt the chocolate and coconut 

oil in a double boiler, or in 

a microwave-safe bowl, stirring 

every 30 seconds. 

• Once the chocolate is 

smooth, pour it into the peanut 

butter bowl and fold it through 

3-5 times. You don’t want to 

completely mix the chocolate 

and peanut butter so the less 

mixing the better. Alternatively, 

you can do a layer of peanut 

butter filling, then just pour the 

chocolate on top. 

• Spread the peanut butter 

chocolate layer over the base 

and sprinkle with the chopped 

peanuts. Set it in the fridge for 

3-4 hours before cutting into 24 

portions. 

Note: Store in an airtight container 

in the fridge or freezer.

TOP YOUNG Canterbury golfer Cooper 

Moore was in outstanding form at the Jack 

Newton junior international tournament 

at Cypress Lakes, New South Wales. 

The Clearwater club player won the 

under 15 title with a -7 by, six shots from 

Ryan Xie (Auckland) -1. 

Cooper also came close in the overall 

event with 141 golfers 17 years and under 

from Australia, New Zealand, United 

States , Japan, Canada, Samoa, Singapore 

and New Caledonia in the field. It is a 

world ranking event. 

A first round 72 had Cooper inside the 

top 20 overall. An excellent second round 

68 saw him tied for second overall and 

tied for the lead in his under-15 age group. 

A windy third round produced a 71 and 

a tied fifth and second respectively. After 

nine holes in the final round four birdies 

saw him tied for the lead. A bogey and a 

couple of birdies left him tied for the lead 

playing the final hole. 

A perfect drive followed by what 

looked a fine shot 10 feet past the flag 

unfortunately spun 25 feet too far off the 

green into a hazard, resulting in a triple 

bogey thus ending his overall winning 

chance. 

Although he had to settle for third place 

it was a superb effort in a world class field. 

He made no race of his age group title on 

the final day.
