The ‘guardians’ is a city 

council-funded initiative set 

up by the Positive Directions 

Trust with the New Brighton 

Community Safety Partnership 

to help combat rising crime. 

It was previously run in 2015, 

but due to a lack of funding 

has not run for the past eight 

years. 

“I think this initiative is 

needed because, from my 

experience in a security role, 

the police are so stretched with 

specific criminal activity, they 

aren’t able to focus on what’s 

happening in and around the 

community,” said Spark. 

“Theft is through the roof, 

from supermarkets to jewellery, 

Subway to Paper Plus – it is 

incredibly challenging with the 

rising cost of living because 

people are getting desperate 

even to feed themselves.”

to run hall 

as hub for 

community 

THE FUTURE of New Brighton’s 

Roy Stokes Hall as a community 

hub has been secured. 

Youth Alive Trust will take 

stewardship of the hall following 

an expression of interest process 

over its future. 

Board of 

trustees chair Greg 

Irvine said the 

organisation saw 

itself as a custodian 

for the local 

community and is 

not planning any Greg Irvine 

significant change 

to the current use of the hall. 

“We are honoured to be 

chosen as custodians of the hall, 

which will continue to serve 

a wide variety of community 

organisations for the benefit of 

our community,” he said. 

“We know a lot of local people 

fundraised to build the hall and 

we pledge to oversee the hall as a 

long-term community asset. 

“It has so much potential and 

possibilities, and we look forward 

to working with existing and new 

community organisations to best 

serve our local people.” 

The trust is talking with 

existing users about continuing 

their activities. In the future it 

sees the hall becoming home to 

more organisations and groups, 

to offer even greater support and 

space for the wider community. 

The trust is a youth and family 

support agency based at Grace 

Vineyard Beach Campus.

Eastgate mall ATM 

charges anger users 

ERROR: At the weekend customers using the new ATMs at Eastgate Mall were informed 

they would be charged a $7.50 transaction fee. 

AN ATM machine screen error 

led to public outcry over the 

weekend and has now forced the 

machine’s company to apologise 

for the mistake. 

People took to social media to 

express their shock after using 

newly installed ATM machines 

at Eastgate Mall. 

They were informed while 

using the machines, operated 

by Next Payments NZ, that they 

would be charged $7.50 for each 

transaction. 

A plan to organise a gathering 

to protest the threatened usage 

charges, calling the charges 

“disgusting” and “criminal”. 

But on Monday morning, 

Next Payments NZ confirmed 

the charge was an ATM screen 

error - caused by having a wrong 

file loaded on the screen files. 

General manager Wibo 

Basoma, said the issue was 

addressed and resolved. 

Basoma said all transactions 

were checked by the company 

and no customer had been 

charged any of the advertised 

fees, all transactions were 

“processed at a zero fee”. 

However, he did confirm 

the ATMs would only be 

fees-free for the first three 

months of their operation 

before a standard fee of $2.80 

per successful cash withdrawal 

would be introduced. 

The fee would allow Next 

Payment to “deliver continued 

support for all cardholders 

to access their bank account 

and perform either a cash 

withdrawal or balance inquiry at 

a safe and secure location” at the 

shopping mall. 

Basoma apologised to the 

public for the screen error and 

said the company regrets the 

mistake. 

“Next is sincerely apologising 

to all cardholders and 

management at (the mall).” 

The city’s history 

with a camera 

THE SEARCH is on once again 

for unique photos that tell the 

stories of Christchurch. 

The annual Christchurch City 

Libraries’ photo hunt started this 

week and will run alongside the 

city’s heritage festival. 

The photo hunt aims to gather 

and preserve photographs from 

across the community, along 

with the unique stories of their 

creators. The theme this year is 

‘Our Stories of Living and Learning’. 

Susan Hanham won last year’s 

photo hunt with a portrait of 

herself and her sister Catherine 

during the 1974 Commonwealth 

Games at Queen Elizabeth II 

Park. 

Hanham recalled the Commonwealth 

Games being a “really 

big deal” for the city. Her mother 

had sewn special clothes in the 

games’ colours. 

“Mum handled the finances 

in our family, and she always set 

money aside in a tin, called the 

fun tin. So, in this instance we 

got to go to the opening of the 

Commonwealth Games in our 

‘special’ games outfits.” 

Acting head of libraries and information 

Erica Rankin said the 

hunt aims to highlight the key 

moments in the city’s history. 

“We find the photo hunt 

incredibly valuable in preserving 

these stories for our future generations 

to learn from and enjoy,” 

she said. 

“We have many stories, from 

Ngāi Tahu and other iwi, European 

settlers, Pasifika and people 

of many ethnic and cultural 

backgrounds who have made this 

place home.” 

Submitted photographs will be 

showcased on the Discovery Wall 

at Tūranga, and as part of the 

permanent heritage collections at 

Christchurch City Libraries.

Hall’s future secured

stewardship earlier this year to

trust was selected because of its 

strong track record in delivering 

community activities.

Spark is also a trained youth 

worker at Youth Alive Trust 

and coaches basketball to 30-40 

young people, five hours per 

week. 

“I’m hoping to bump into a 

lot of youth out on the streets, 

and who wouldn’t want to walk

people, especially people on the 

fringes of society. So yeah, I think 

it’ll be a really good role for me.”

EN POINTE: Tamison Soppet has gained a scholarship to some of the world’s best ballet 

schools after winning a major competition in Sydney.

TAMISON SOPPET might only 

be 13, but she has what could be 

a life-defining decision to make. 

The Convergence Dance 

Studios student has been offered 

scholarships to the Royal Ballet 

School in London, John Cranko 

Ballet in Germany, Princess 

Grace Dance Academy in 

Monaco and the Australian 

Ballet School in Melbourne. 

Tamison has the opportunity 

to follow in the footsteps of 

Italian Alessandra Ferri, who 

attended the Royal Ballet School 

in the early 1980’s; or Queen 

Elizabeth II’s appointed prima 

ballerina assoluta of the school, 

Dame Margot Fonteyn; or even 

the famous Rudolf Nureyev. 

“Tamison has been competing 

all her life and dancing since 

she was four. Her dream is to 

become a professional dancer,” 

said her mother, Toni Soppet. 

“Now, she has an opportunity 

to travel the world, experience 

dancing at different schools, and 

see what is out there for her.” 

Tamison competed at the 

Youth America Grand Prix ballet 

competition, held in Sydney late 

last month, against more than 

200 dancers aged 12-14. 

After three days of performing 

and attending masterclasses, 

Tamison was called back for 

further judging, where the junior 

grand prix title was officially 

awarded to her by consensus of a 

four-judge panel. 

The scholarship enables her 

to attend one of four top ballet 

schools in the world for a period 

of up to four weeks. 

“Winning is one thing and 

absolutely something to be proud 

of, but the scholarships and 

exposure is where the ‘excel’ part 

starts,” said Soppet. 

“Tamison is over the moon to 

have such an accomplishment 

under her belt. This is the 

first time she’s been overseas 

to compete - which is pretty 

incredible.” 

She said Tamison was judged 

for her ‘artistry, technicality, 

musicality, and performance’ in 

both classical and contemporary 

categories. 

“We moved to Convergence 

Dance Studios a couple of years 

ago and I cannot give Olivia 

Russell, her dance instructor, 

enough credit,” said Soppet. 

“Her incredible nurturing, 

time, effort and training has 

helped Tamison get to where she 

is today.” 

Outside of dancing, Soppet 

said Tamison enjoys swapping 

her ballet shoes for gumboots 

while hanging out at her friend’s 

alpaca farm, and doing ‘normal 

kid’ things.

Synchro Dolphins take silver 

THE PROVINCE’S future in 

synchronised swimming looks 

to be in good hands, following 

Canterbury Dolphins’ success at 

last week’s Artistic Swimming 

Nationals in Auckland. 

The Canterbury Dolphins, 

a team of five swimmers, took 

second place in the Dolphin 

Combo under 16s competition, 

against six other teams from 

across the country. 

The talented young synchro 

swimmers showcased their 

abilities during a three-minute 

routine set to a medley of 

Mission Impossible, James Bond, 

and Pink Panther tunes. 

All but two of the girls joined 

the team in recent months. 

12-year-old Georgie Halliwell 

was introduced to the sport 

earlier this year by her school 

friend Emily Betteridge, 12. 

Emily has been a part of 

Canterbury Artistic Swimming 

for two years, alongside 

teammate Alex Macfarlane, 12. 

“It’s like underwater 

gymnastics,” said Emily about 

the sport. 

“And you’re doing it in perfect 

sync with the rest of the team – 

it’s challenging! We count, and 

we listen to the music.” 

Georgie shared her excitement 

about participating in the event. 

“Synchronised swimming is a 

combination of all my favourite 

things, with swimming, music, 

and creating routines all being 

important,” she said. 

“It’s really fun being part of a 

team, and we train hard.” 

The team’s dedication is 

evident in their rigorous training 

regimen, which consisted of five 

hours a week throughout the 

year. 

Coach Jo Biddle expressed her 

pride in the girls’ dedication and 

focus. 

“I’m super proud of these girls 

and how they’ve truly committed 

themselves to achieve these 

remarkable results,” she said. 

“They’ve come a long way 

and have truly earned this 

recognition.”

contribute to a wide variety of extracurricular

band placed silver in the Jazz Quest competition. 

The term finished with our annual Lipsync 

competition, which was fiercely competitive, 

heaps of fun, and included cameos from 

teachers to boost the points. Congratulations 

to Sheppard Pou - who it is argued won on 

merit (not because the principal did a cameo 

appearance). All of these events continue 

to celebrate the wairua of Avonside and its

Academic enrichment is a focus at Avonside. 

This term student groups took part in a 

philosophy conference, the Model United 

Nations and World Scholars’ Cup in which 

we won the senior division. Our AGHS/SBHS 

team had a win at the Canterbury Robotics 

scrimmage, Service also featured with groups 

tree planting, the release of the film I stand 

for Consent featuring Avonside and students 

involved in climate action.

Gala Day 

Student-led events thrive at Avonside and we 

are proud of the kia rangatira shown by our 

young people of all ages. This term we have had 

non-uniform days, a GALA Day featuring stalls 

from all our student councils and a cookie bake 

off. 

Lipsync Competition 

Tongan Language Week 

Of course, a huge feature of Term 3 was the 

success of the winter sport teams. It was great 

to see so many teams across netball, soccer, 

hockey, basketball and badminton and of 

course to celebrate the growth of the 1st XV 

Rugby team. Alongside this korfball, fencing, 

rock-climbing, surfing, skiing and swimming 

enjoyed significant successes. Tournament week 

Individual student success is a standout at 

Avonside. Along with students selected for 

Canterbury sport teams and NZ Korfball U21, 

we had one student win the Alliance Francaise 

speech competition and another come runner 

up in the Liberate Your Words Schools poetry 

competition. Our students continue to lead, 

amaze and empower others and themselves 

and I have probably missed some things above. 

To our NCEA students kia manawanui as you 

head towards getting those last credits and to all 

our students - have a safe holiday break.

There have been some notable large school 

events throughout the term, and I want to thank 

the students and staff involved in leading these. 

We started with Matariki celebrations, and an 

assembly and a week of events led by Te Roopu 

Hine-Titama. Later in the term our Tongan 

students brought Tongan culture and language 

alive across the school. 

During Te Wiki o te Reo Māori staff pledged to 

learn waiata and karakia and students and staff 

created opportunities to talk in Te Reo Māori 

with each other. Our performing arts students 

shone in their performances at the Senior 

Music Spectacular

metabolic disease and lifestyle 

medicine, who says food is more 

than nutrients and fuel and it is

without compromising on

A keto diet significantly 

reduces using glucose as fuel, 

turning off the making of new fat 

and leaving only dietary fat and 

stored fat for fuel. Insulin controls 

the balance as it carries the 

glucose around the body to use 

as energy, and controlling the 

insulin in your body has been 

proved to be helpful for those 

with diabetes. 

Turmeric Thai chicken 

curry 

Makes 4 portions 

Suitable for GF, sugar-free, DF, 

egg-free 

Ingredients 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

8 chicken thighs, skinless, boneless 

3 Tbsp red curry paste, lowsugar 

1 small onion, sliced 

1 Tbsp fresh ginger, finely grated 

1 clove garlic, crushed 

2 tsp ground coriander 

1½ tsp ground turmeric 

1 tsp salt 

½ tsp white pepper 

400ml coconut milk 

½ head broccoli or 2 bunches 

broccolini 

1 lime, zest and juice 

Method 

• Preheat a heavy-based pot 

over a high heat. Once hot, add 

2 tablespoons of oil and sear the 

chicken thighs on both sides until 

golden brown. Remove them 

from the pot and set aside. 

• In the same pot, add another 

tablespoon of oil and the 

sliced onion, and cook until 

translucent. Then add the curry 

paste, ginger, garlic, coriander, 

turmeric, salt and pepper. Cook 

for another 2–3 minutes until 

fragrant. 

• Add the coconut milk and 

return the chicken to the sauce. 

Turn it down to a low heat and 

simmer for 15–20 minutes until 

the chicken is cooked through. 

• Cut the broccoli into florets, 

or trim the broccolini, and add 

them to the sauce. Cover the 

pot and simmer for another 4–7 

minutes until the broccoli is 

tender. 

• Lastly, stir through the lime 

zest and juice, then taste and 

adjust the seasoning, if needed. 

Nutrition Note: Turmeric is well 

known for its anti-inflammatory 

and antioxidant properties. 

Peanut butter cup slice 

Makes 24 slices 

Suitable for GF, sugar-free, vegetarian, 

egg-free 

For the base 

150g butter, melted 

200g ground almonds 

90g allulose 

50g cocoa powder 

35g peanuts, chopped 

½ tsp ground cinnamon 

For the peanut butter layer 

500g smooth peanut butter (no 

added sugar) 

80g unflavoured or vanilla, lowcarb 

protein powder 

150g Allulose 

1 tsp Vanilla paste or essence 

For the chocolate 

200g sugar-free dark chocolate, 

chopped, or baking bits 

40g coconut oil 

35g peanuts, chopped 

Method 

• Preheat your oven to 170°C 

fan bake and line a 20cm × 30cm 

slice tray with baking paper. 

• In a bowl, mix the base ingredients 

together and press evenly 

into the bottom of the lined tray. 

• Bake for 8-10 minutes until 

the top looks dry, then press the 

base down with a flat object or 

the back of a spoon. Allow the 

base to cool completely at room 

temperature before continuing. 

• Heat the peanut butter in a 

double boiler or in a microwavesafe 

bowl on low, stirring every 

30 seconds, until it has thinned 

out and is easy to mix. 

• Stir in the protein powder. 

If you’re using a vanilla protein 

powder, it may have sweetness in 

it already, so start with half the 

sweetener, then taste the mix and 

add more as needed. 

• Stir through the vanilla and 

mix until combined, then set it 

aside. 

• Melt the chocolate and coconut 

oil in a double boiler, or in 

a microwave-safe bowl, stirring 

every 30 seconds. 

• Once the chocolate is 

smooth, pour it into the peanut 

butter bowl and fold it through 

3-5 times. You don’t want to 

completely mix the chocolate 

and peanut butter so the less 

mixing the better. Alternatively, 

you can do a layer of peanut 

butter filling, then just pour the 

chocolate on top. 

• Spread the peanut butter 

chocolate layer over the base 

and sprinkle with the chopped 

peanuts. Set it in the fridge for 

3-4 hours before cutting into 24 

portions. 

Note: Store in an airtight container 

in the fridge or freezer.

TOP YOUNG Canterbury golfer Cooper 

Moore was in outstanding form at 

the Jack Newton junior international 

tournament at Cypress Lakes, New South 

Wales. 

The Clearwater club player won the 

under 15 title with a -7 by, six shots from 

Ryan Xie (Auckland) -1. 

Cooper also came close in the overall 

event with 141 golfers 17 years and under 

from Australia, New Zealand, United 

States , Japan, Canada, Samoa, Singapore 

and New Caledonia in the field. It is a 

world ranking event. 

A first round 72 had Cooper inside the 

top 20 overall. An excellent second round 

68 saw him tied for second overall and 

tied for the lead in his under-15 age group. 

A windy third round produced a 71 and 

a tied fifth and second respectively. After 

nine holes in the final round four birdies 

saw him tied for the lead. A bogey and a 

couple of birdies left him tied for the lead 

playing the final hole. 

A perfect drive followed by what 

looked a fine shot 10 feet past the flag 

unfortunately spun 25 feet too far off the 

green into a hazard, resulting in a triple 

bogey thus ending his overall winning 

chance. 

Although he had to settle for third place 

it was a superb effort in a world class field. 

He made no race of his age group title on 

the final day.

Seaside Treasures celebrate nine 

years of service to New Brighton 

Time has flown from the 2014 opening 

of Seaside Treasures, which has been 

actively helping, supplying, and serving 

the New Brighton community ever since. 

The one room shop opened with a small 

supply of knitted items, pots and pans and 

a few bits and pieces. 

It has progressed over the past nine 

years into a six room location which 

displays everything from needles in a 

haberdashery room, to bedding, bears, 

and barrels. 

Every person who works in the 

shop is a volunteer and most of them 

have been with Seaside Treasures for 

the past seven or eight years. Over the 

past almost decade they have donated 

$15,000 to many organisations and 

groups. Including the Cancer Society, 

Westpac Helicopter Service, St John’s, 

New Brighton Museum, plus more local 

groups. 

Founder Shirley Smith and her team 

of eight amazing volunteers, including 

a shout out to Anne Marchant, who will 

be 90 soon and is one of the original 

volunteers who has come in every week 

over the past many years. We thank you 

Anne and we are so grateful to have you as 

part of our team. You are inspiring!

around $20 a month from April 2024, making healthy

budgeting and investing starting 2025. 

4. Expand 20 hours free Early Childhood Education to 

2-year-olds. Saving parents an average of $133 a week 

from March 2024. 

5. Extra $25 per week for 160,000 working families. 

Big boost to Working for Families from April 2024 to 

help with the cost of raising kids. 

7. Four weeks paid parental leave for partners. Partners 

will get 2 weeks paid leave from July 2024, 3 weeks from 

July 2025 and 4 weeks from July 2026. 

8. Trade mission to India in the first 100 days. 

Boost economic growth and support our farmers and 

exporters by working towards a Free Trade Agreement 

with India. 

9. Make Apprenticeship Boost permanent. Businesses 

who take on an apprentice will receive $500 per month 

for 2 years. This successful scheme will be made 

permanent.
