“I was surprised at what a moving experience
it was. This project has been months in the
making, so while this was the first moment of
the restoration, it was not the first moment of
the project. Watching the painting coming down,
your heart is in your mouth… because you are
desperate that nothing is going to go wrong. Now
that I see the canvas and can stand in front of
it, what really excites me is knowing how many
people are going to get to see this painting up
close. When the conservation is finished, it will
go back onto the ceiling where it lives, but during
the time it is being restored and exhibited, people
are going to have such a wonderful opportunity
to see and appreciate this amazing work.”
