Wilson’s management confirmed the news that the popular stand-up and TV personality passed away surrounded by family and friends at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. “We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the muchloved stand-up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney,” the statement by Token Artists read. “Cal’s generosity, talent and friendship have been constants in the Australian comedy scene for the last twenty years. Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.” Wilson moved to Melbourne in 2003 to star in the sketch show, Skithouse. She went on to become one of Australia’s best-known comedians with appearances on Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, Would I Lie To You and in her own Netflix stand-up special. Wilson became a fixture on the Australian comedy circuit, performing in the Melbourne Comedy Festival a total of 14 times. She eventually became a member of its board. City council head of planning and consents John Higgins said council officers have made recommendations to the Independent Hearings Panel on the submissions received, including recommended changes to the plan change as notified. “This has regard to the merits of what has been sought in submissions, as well as following review of the evidence to date. It is consistent with other planning processes under the Resource Management Act here in Christchurch and elsewhere,” he said. “The Independent Hearing Panel will consider the recommendations of council officers along with the evidence put forward by submitters before making recommendations to the council next year. The recommendations made by the IHP may well differ again from what was notified and what has been recommended by council officers.” Higgins said council would assist the ombudsman with its inquiry to the extent required but had no further comment on the complaint. The first submitter at the panel was the city council’s legal counsel for the Plan Change 14 process, Cedric Carranceja. Carranceja said Christchurch’s district plan was extensively reworked after the Canterbury earthquakes, and pre-empted urban development issues which have since emerged in other centres. The changes prompted central government to take action to increase housing in other cities, with Christchurch almost looked at as a case-study, he said. Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday October 12 2023 The Star NEWS 5 City water supply ‘safe to drink’ despite being non-compliant • By Niva Chittock IT IS UNCLEAR if a parasite barrier will be installed on an uncompliant water supply in Christchurch. Water regulator Taumata Arowai wrote to the city council and 26 others which do not have protection against protozoa and other parasites on some of their supplies. Collectively, the drinking water supplies missing a protozoa barrier (such as a UV treatment system) provide water to over 300,000 people. The Christchurch supplies alone serve more than 168,000 people. Taumata Arowai sent notices to the non-compliant councils after a cryptosporidium outbreak made dozens of people sick in Queenstown. There had been 65 confirmed cases of illness so far, which was believed to have stemmed from human faecal contamination of a water supply drawn from Lake Wakatipu. The affected Two Mile supply has no protozoa barrier and residents remained on a boil water notice until one could be installed. The city council confirmed it had received the non-compliance letter and was considering its next steps. The city’s situation was unique and a plan was already in place to make it compliant, the council’s head of Three Waters Brent Smith had previously said. “We have high quality drinking water drawn from deep aquifers. Based on extensive studies there is evidence to show that the risk of protozoa contamination is very low,” he said. “In most contamination events involving protozoa, the water supplied to residents is sourced from rivers, lakes or very shallow aquifers. Other potential sources are animals entering reservoirs and UV would not help this. “In order to be compliant with the protozoa-related rules set by Taumata Arowai we need to have UV sterilisation installed or have proved ‘Class 1’ water. Christchurch has spent significant funds in the past years to secure our wells to attain Class 1 status, which according to the Drinking Water Quality Assurance Rules do not require a protozoal barrier.” According to Taumata Arowai, Class 1 status meant water drawn from a depth of more than 30 metres below ground by a sanitary bore head in which E. coli and other bacteria had not been detected over a period of three years (proven by monthly samples). Where the council did not expect to achieve this status, UV treatment had been installed or the pump stations were no longer used for drinking water, Smith said. Christchurch’s water sources had previously been compliant but a rule change meant further testing was now needed to become compliant again, he said. “Although the Christchurch supply is non-compliant at present, the water is safe to drink,” he said.
